Almost every time this cast had a soccer practice, the creative team would observe the multiple, overlapping conversations that arose over the soon-familiar repetition of warmups and drills. As snatches of the conversations reached us in little snippets about politics, about schoolwork, about bodies, someone would inevitably say “This is it. This is the play.” Sarah DeLappe’s ability to capture that music and to make us care deeply about these characters made this play a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2017. You won’t hear every word that is spoken tonight, anymore than you would if you were sitting on the sidelines during our soccer practices. You will, we hope, get to know and care about each of these players and feel the bonds they have formed both on and off the field.
There is an incredibly volatile feeling within yourself when you’re a teenage girl. There is a desire for combustion—it feels as if the whole world is staring at you, telling you what to look like, what to like, and who to be when you have just begun to explore the world. The Wolves explores the development and relationships that exist between a group of girls on an indoor, competitive soccer team. We watch as these girls use this space, safe or unsafe to them, to answer questions about themselves and the world around them: Who am I? Am I smart enough? Am I enough? How do I protect myself and my friends? How do I stand up for myself? Am I even allowed to ask questions? How do I get respect? Am I a kid or an adult; which do I want to be? What are the depths of my emotions and what do I do if I hit the bottom? This is a story DeLappe felt necessary to tell because it’s a story so many of us have lived. This is what it’s like to grow together and grow apart.
