I

f you are looking for excellent coffee in a warm, inviting atmosphere, consider passing under the bright red awning of Charlotte Cafe. There is a good chance you will meet owner Vinz whose mission is to develop cafes that become home to customers and team members alike.

This dedicated vision began when Vinz, having relocated from Albania to NYC, got a job as a barista at a coffee shop on the Upper West Side.

In March 2019, Vinz and his wife Aida bought out the coffee shop and transitioned it into the first Charlotte Cafe. Since then, they have opened locations on 34th Street and, most recently, in the Sutton Place area.

Vinz shares, “I am the owner, operator, and barista here. We started this place with the idea of creating a pleasant workplace where we can employ our family and friends together and enjoy each other’s company. We also wanted to make sure it’s not just a dull job, but a happy place to be.”

Their mission is to make sure everyone around them is well taken care of, especially their loyal team that gets to partner on new cafes. He mentions how they are not backed by investors, but rather the hardworking staff and natural leadership built from the ground up.

It was fascinating to learn that the name "Charlotte Cafe" was a deliberate choice, steeped in history and meaning for Vinz and Aida. They believe Charlotte, a name with royal roots, evokes a sense of sophistication and classic charm. It represents a lineage of strength, warmth, and a nurturing spirit, qualities that are at the heart of their brand ethos. The cozy space marked with a red awning at the corner of 61st and 2nd Avenue is not just a cafe — it is where each guest is treated with care, be it a familiar smile, exceptional service, or a moment of tranquility.

At this European cafe, any craving can be satisfied with a wide array of options ranging from rich espresso beans roasted in Bologna, Italy, to freshly baked Italian Cornetti (apricot is Vinz’s personal favorite), to French-style brioche buns with homemade eggs, bacon, and cheese. One of the top sellers: a delicious Chai Latte. It’s made with sweet vanilla chai and steamed to perfection with your choice of milk.

VINZ During my recent Sunday afternoon visit, my fiance and I sampled some of the staff’s top picks: a Viennese cappuccino with an out-of-theoven chocolate croissant, their chai latte, and the barista gave us fresh slices of marble pound cake to take home.

ur holiday walk from last year was almost postponed once again, but, toes almost frostbitten and all, it luckily wasn't. This just may have been my personal favorite tour yet! The specific readers who came along were so positive and fun, we had a spicy gift from local entrepreneur Simran Khiantani to warm us up, and the windows were simply extraordinary this season. The most fascinating part, along with Dolce & Gabbana's first-ever holiday market, was spotting our December cover illustrator Tug Rice's artwork outside Harry Winston! The real highlight of the day.

idewalks glazed with frost, the air crisp and biting — New York City was wrapped in winter’s hush. I stepped off East 69th Street and into Birley Bakery, where the cold dissolved into a world of seasonal magic.

Upstairs, a fireplace flickered beneath a muraled ceiling, its mantle adorned with festive greenery and ornaments. The room glowed with intimacy and elegance, like a scene from a Parisian winter tale.

The upstairs seating, with its checkered chairs and blue-topped tables, invites lingering. A red handbag rested casually on one chair, like a character in a story. Outside, snow continued to fall, but inside, time slowed. Patrons sipped coffee, shared pastries, and basked in the quiet joy of the season.

Birley Bakery is more than a bakery — it’s a love letter to French tradition.

Founded by Robin Birley and helmed by maître pâtissier Vincent Zanardi, the bakery honors classic techniques while embracing modern refinement.

Every item is handmade daily, using ingredients sourced with reverence: flour from Burgundy, sea salt from Brittany, almonds from Valencia.

As I left, the scent of butter and spice clung to my coat, and the warmth of the fire lingered in my chest. Birley Bakery had turned an ordinary winter morning into something quietly extraordinary.

This morning, I chose a Tarte Tropézienne, its brioche base pillowy and golden, filled with a silky vanilla cream that whispered notes of the Riviera. The croissant, crisp and deeply bronzed, shattered delicately with each bite, revealing layers so fine they seemed woven. A pain au chocolat followed, its bittersweet filling wrapped in buttery folds.

lia’s Casa Bianca Ristorante Italiano, a newly opened gem in Midtown East, brings a fresh, modern approach to Italian cuisine while honoring the soulful traditions of the Mediterranean.

With a menu built around made-to-order dishes and fresh, seasonal ingredients, the restaurant has quickly become a destination for those seeking elevated comfort food in an intimate, stylish setting. What makes the restaurant feel especially personal is its humble, hands-on beginning.

A simple pre-opening snapshot: I walked by and saw owner Elez Bucaj, hard at work, unaware anyone was watching. It was a small moment, but it matched the restaurant’s overall vibe — less about splashy hype, more about showing up daily and doing things the right way. During my two visits, the vibe was welcoming with quiet pride. If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant that aims to feel familiar — in the best way — this is a new address worth knowing.

Among the standout offerings is the Fennel Salad (Finocchio), a vibrant mix of rucola, orange segments, goat cheese, and olives, finished with a bright lemon dressing. It’s a refreshing start that balances citrus and creaminess with a subtle bite from the fennel. The Beet Salad (Bietola) is equally compelling, pairing earthy red beets with mixed greens, gorgonzola, and a lemon-orange zest that lifts the dish with a hint of sweetness and tang.

For warm starters, the Polenta is a rustic yet refined favorite — creamy cornmeal layered with mixed mushrooms, truffle oil, and parmigiano. It’s a dish that speaks to the heart of northern Italy, rich and comforting with a luxurious finish. The Octopus (Polpo), grilled and served with potatoes, tomatoes, and panatella capers, is a Mediterranean classic reimagined with precision and flair. Tender and smoky, it’s a dish that showcases the kitchen’s finesse with seafood.

Pasta lovers will find joy in the Rigatoni, a robust plate of eggplant, cherry tomatoes, and burrata.

The textures are beautifully balanced — al dente pasta, creamy cheese, and roasted vegetables come together in a dish that’s both hearty and elegant. While not listed on the standard menu, the Ravioli is often featured as a seasonal special, typically filled with ricotta or wild mushrooms and served in a sage butter or tomato reduction. Jonas Young-Borra ON IDENTITY, NEW YORK, AND A LIFE IN MOTION

J

onas Young-Borra has lived several distinct New York lives, sometimes all at once. Model. Musician. Athlete. Nightlife director. Restaurant owner. Coach. Neighbor. At 40, he carries those chapters easily, stitched together by a deep loyalty to the city and a belief that time, not money, is the real currency. These days, he is living on 57th Street just off Second Avenue, back in the part of Manhattan that feels most like home.

The greater Sutton Place area is not new to Jonas. He grew up close by on the Upper East Side and attended The Browning School, an early connection to a part of Manhattan that values continuity and character. His path through higher education mirrored the unpredictability of the city itself. He attended The New School and Baruch College before eventually graduating cum laude from Purchase College. The timeline was nonlinear by necessity. At 18, a chance opportunity led him to sign with Ford Models Men’s division, an experience that changed his life and opened doors he never planned to walk through. Modeling led to acting, music, and travel, all while Jonas tried to balance coursework with professional commitments.

Sports were always part of his identity. He played baseball seriously enough to have a brief professional career and later returned to school believing basketball would be his next focus. After making the team at Purchase and realizing he would spend most games on the bench, he stumbled into something unexpected. On the way out of the gym one afternoon, Jonas noticed a flyer for club golf tryouts. He had almost no experience, beyond holding a club during a photo shoot, but he bought an expensive set anyway and showed up claiming he had played plenty. The truth surfaced quickly, but he somehow made a bogey on the first hole. He was hooked. Seventeen years later, golf remains a passion. He qualified for the Met Amateur last year and continues chasing his first club championship at Lake Success Golf Club in Great Neck.

After college, Jonas hoped to find work in writing, the focus of his studies. Jobs were scarce, so he leaned into nightlife as a way to stay afloat. One opportunity led to another, and fourteen years later, he is still deeply embedded in the industry. He currently works as Nightlife and Promotional Director at Nebula on West 41st Street.

Beyond that role, he throws his own party at the Highlight Room in the Moxy LES, consults for Sapphire Gentleman’s Club, and co-owns Seawolf, a new American restaurant in Bushwick. He is also the owner of New York City Studios in Flatiron, where he writes and produces music for himself and others. When time allows, he still occasionally DJs at clubs downtown, favoring eighties new wave and pop. Modeling never fully faded either. He remains signed and works when availability aligns.

Jonas met his girlfriend, Samantha Laurito, in a way that feels fitting for someone whose life rarely follows a straight line. They connected on Facebook, though neither remembers sending or accepting a request. Samantha initially thought he was a different person with the same first name. When they eventually crossed paths in a music studio, she still had no idea who he was. Jonas showed up wearing printed shorts straight out of the 1980s and a Hawaiian shirt. Samantha remembers thinking, Who is this guy? Somehow, that moment turned into something lasting.

Home life includes three dogs, Louie, Bentley, and Coco, along with a cat named St. Kitty of Bedstuy. Coco’s story is legendary.

Samantha spotted her in a Brooklyn pet shop sitting inside a gerbil cage. When she pointed out that the animal was clearly a dog, the shop owner offered to sell Coco with the cage at a gerbil price. Coco grew into a striking Pomeranian Keeshond and remains one of a kind.

Jonas does not identify as a devoted professional sports fan.

Instead, he invests his energy locally. He is a booster for the Yeshiva University men’s basketball team and follows his high school’s varsity sports program closely. He coaches basketball at a local grammar and middle school and occasionally helps people fine tune their golf swings. Being involved with kids, families, and neighbors brings a sense of fulfillment that balances the intensity of nightlife work.

Family history is deeply rooted in this part of Manhattan. Jonas’ paternal grandmother arrived from northern Italy in the 1930s and settled on 55th Street between Sutton and First Avenue, where her family opened a grocery store called Rossi’s. At 97, she still tells stories about when there was a beach where the FDR Drive now runs. His paternal grandfather grew up in the Village and once owned the townhouse that now houses Piccola Cucina on 60th Street off Park Avenue. He sold it too early, but retired young and spent invaluable time with his grandson. Jonas’ father is a retired teacher and jazz musician. His mother, who lives in Millbrook, owns a restaurant and built her career as a former actress and model, fluent in multiple languages and driven by entrepreneurship. Though his parents divorced early, they remain close friends and still spend holidays together.

Living in Sutton Place has reinforced Jonas’ appreciation for community. He loves the charm, the walkability, and the way conversations still happen organically. He describes the neighborhood as one of the last places in Manhattan where people are genuinely friendly. He is vocal on social media about affordability, gentrification, and the evolving state of New York City, advocating for a future that does not erase the city’s soul.

When he is staying close to home, Jonas gravitates toward familiar spots.

A slice from Sofia’s Pizza, a burger at PJ Clarke’s, or dinner at Sushi Seki are part of his regular rhythm. He still believes the neighborhood is missing a truly exceptional Italian restaurant, an observation that feels half complaint and half future plan.

One of the quieter full circle moments in Jonas’ story involves fashion.

Early in his modeling career, he worked for Thom Browne when the designer was just getting started. Today, Thom Browne lives nearby, in the townhouse on the corner of Sutton Place and 57th Street. It is a small detail, but one that reflects how often Jonas’ past and present overlap.

Jonas often repeats two lines that guide his decisions: "You can always make more money, but you cannot make up for lost time." "It is better to be forward than backwards." Standing in Sutton Place, walking the same streets his family once knew, those ideas feel less like sayings and more like lived truths. After careers that zigzagged, passions that collided, and opportunities that arrived unexpectedly, Jonas has landed somewhere that mirrors who he has always been. Rooted in the city. Invested in people. Moving forward. Right where New York still feels like New York.

meditate. At the time, she hated meditation, but it opened the door to a realization that she simply had not found a form of mindfulness that worked for her.

That curiosity led her to her first sound bath. After that session, she left feeling like she could dance or fly around the room. It was a true lightning strike moment. She became immersed in the practice, attending sound baths regularly and noticing tangible shifts in both her mind and body. About a year later, she felt called to learn the practice herself so she could help others experience the same relief. Recalibrate Mind Body grew from that moment, with a mission to show people that mindfulness does not have to be rigid or difficult and that you can feel a real, measurable difference through sound.

Not every sound bath unfolds perfectly. Early on, while hosting Friday night sessions at a studio, a summer concert series in the courtyard erupted into full 80s hairband rock midway through a class. Crystal singing bowls competed with electric guitars, and all Katie could do was keep playing. By the end, everyone was laughing. It was a reminder that mindfulness is about staying grounded when things are out of your control, and yes, it was also the last Friday night sound bath there.

Originally from the North Shore suburbs of Chicago, Katie spent more than a decade living near Wrigley Field before work took her to Connecticut and eventually New York City. After time in Park Slope, she realized she wanted less commuting and more living, which led her to the Upper East Side. Today, she stays involved through the Upper East Side Cookbook Club, frequent pickleball games, and collaborations with local wellness practitioners and small business owners. She also hosts regular sound baths open to anyone, offers private in-home sessions, and provides a complimentary 5-minute sound bath on her website. Understanding why orthodontic timing varies — and what an early visit is actually meant to accomplish — can help parents make confident, informed decisions.

or many parents, knowing when to bring a child to the orthodontist can be confusing. Most people associate braces with teenagers, yet many parents also see children as young as seven wearing braces, Invisalign®, or palatal expanders. When friends, family members, and even dentists offer differing advice, it can feel overwhelming to know what is truly necessary, and when.

WHY ORTHODONTIC TIMING FEELS SO INCONSISTENT For many years, it was standard practice for orthodontists to wait until all baby teeth were lost before beginning treatment. Some even waited until all permanent teeth had fully erupted, which typically occurs between ages 13 and 15.

Up through the 1980s, crowded or crooked teeth were commonly treated by removing permanent teeth to create space. Waiting until adolescence made sense under that model.

Over the past 30 years, however, orthodontics has evolved significantly.

Today, crowding is more often addressed by techniques that gently expand and develop the dental arches, allowing teeth to align naturally — often without removing healthy permanent teeth. Because jaw growth plays an important role in this process, the opportunity to guide growth sometimes exists earlier than parents expect.

WHY EARLY SCREENING DOES NOT MEAN EARLY BRACES It is important to distinguish between an orthodontic screening and orthodontic treatment.

In selected cases, creating space through arch development can begin before many baby teeth are lost — sometimes as early as age seven.

That does not mean every child needs early treatment. In fact, most children evaluated at a young age do not begin treatment right away.

The decision depends on several individualized factors, including the severity of crowding, jaw growth patterns, bite relationships, oral habits, and overall facial development. Determining whether early intervention is helpful — or whether observation is the best approach — requires experience and careful judgment.

DIFFERENT ORTHODONTISTS, DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHIES Parents may hear conflicting recommendations because orthodontists, like physicians in many specialties, may have different treatment philosophies.

Some orthodontists are more conservative and recommend early, or “Phase 1,” treatment only in specific situations. Others recommend early treatment more frequently. This variation does not necessarily mean

Each child’s growth pattern is unique, and orthodontic decisions should be based on the individual child, not simply on age.

WHY SOME DENTISTS HESITATE TO REFER TOO EARLY Parents are sometimes advised by pediatric dentists or general dentists to wait before seeing an orthodontist. Often, this guidance comes from a place of protection.

Because some orthodontic practices recommend early treatment in nearly every case, referring dentists may feel the need to guard families against unnecessary intervention or a “factory-style” approach where treatment begins as soon as a child walks through the door.

At the same time, orthodontists receive specialized training in growth, development, and timing. An orthodontist who evaluates each child individually — and does not automatically recommend treatment — is best equipped to decide if and when intervention is appropriate.

For this reason, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening at age seven. The goal is not to begin treatment, but to establish a baseline, monitor growth, and plan thoughtfully.
