Dear All We all have a vocation. God has plans for each of us, plans for good.

God’s kingdom on earth is enabled by calling us to our vocation. We may be called to do good in many ways, not only through teaching or medical work, but also through engineering, or running a small business, or even accountancy; and “I get more out of it than I put in” is the experience of most of people who do voluntary or community work.

But combine this sense of vocation with knowing you are responding to God’s particular call and need for you and you’ll get a sense of God’s blessing and grace flowing in your life. It is ministry for God to fulfil a calling to work as a Sunday School leader, cleaner, treasurer, churchwarden, and the like.

At Holy Trinity we can see this call in action in what so many people do. This month, and until Easter, we have been called to participate in developing one person’s public ministry. It is a great privilege to have Judith Johnson on placement with us as part of her Lay Reader training from the Bradford Diocese.

Judith has answered a call by God and is deeply committed to developing her ministry for the future and she is being supported by Janet Thompson, our Lay Reader, whose own calling developed into to a significant and experienced ministry.

There will be others of you who sense that God is calling. Listen to God, and I’m here to listen with you.

Holy Trintiy Heritage Lottery Funding Bid At Holy Trinity, we are applying for Heritage Lottery funding for the following work : • • • •

Repairs to the roof following the theft of lead from the main gutters Modernisation of the main entrance porch to make the access easier for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and to make the church warmer Completion of safety work to reduce the risk of accidents Creation of an exhibition of artefacts and engaging the community in the project to appreciate our heritage.

The main outcome we expect is a dry, warm and safe church building, which will be a more attractive place, used by the community for worship and for social activities.

Brian James, a member of the PCC subgroup which has worked very hard on submitting the bid, describes the bidding process : The funding application is a two round process.

Round 1 application requests the money to pay for the development stage. This is to fund the planning of our project and fully work out the scope of the work that we need to undertake before we send the proposals in greater detail for Round 2.

Round 1 Application deadline 29th November 2013 for (application for project development costs) has been met.

The Decision date when we find out if we are successful is 18th March 2014.

In the period from now to 28th February, the PCC sub group will be working with the architect to develop the proposal for round 2. Part of this development will involve surveys of the church to confirm the scope of repairs required.

Concert News The time has come once again to start thinking about St. George proceedings, and as this year will mark the 10th anniversary of our concerts, we think this is likely to be the LAST one of its kind. We’ll still celebrate St. George’s Day in the future, but just may take a different approach.

Meanwhile, we want to put more fun, frolics and fantastic entertainment into this final fling than ever before. So, we thought it would bring English celebrations to some kind of a finale, and give us plenty of potential, to celebrate English characters and characteristics. These can be real life eccentrics/famous people or just English stereotypes that are known the world over!

The concert will be on Saturday 26th April at 7.30pm in Holy Trinity Church. Tickets will be £10, which includes the cost of a programme and supper - special offer at 2 for £15.

Proceeds will go towards church roof repairs. Items can be songs, tunes, short sketches, readings, poems etc - but they must be about England or the English.

Book Review Fr David Branford is an Anglican who joined the Catholic Church, and is now the Chaplain at the Young Offenders’ Prison. His book, ‘CADWALLAN’ has received 5-star reviews. Mothers’ Union Update Holy Trinity Mothers’ Union Annual General Meeting took place on Wednesday January 15th 2014 at 2:00p.m. at the Village Hall. We opened with prayer and sang the hymn ‘Lord of all Power’. Hazel read from St.Paul’s letter to the Romans. In the absence of the vicar, who was on a reading week with the Bishop, it was chaired by me, Kath Lane. As this was my first AGM as Enrolling Member it was quite daunting but, as ever, the support of the members made it a pleasurable occasion.

The minutes of the 2013 AGM were given to all members and approved and signed. Matters arising were addressed later in the Agenda.

Trish Cooper read the Treasurer’s report and it was proposed and seconded. Trish also gave thanks to David Bateman for auditing the report.

Hazel Short read the Secretary’s report which outlined the various speakers and events throughout the year. Mention was also made of members who sadly passed way during the year – Violet Lloyd , Pauline Wood and Freda Bidder. We were delighted to welcome nine new members and two returning members at the Opening Service in September. The report was proposed and seconded.

I gave the Enrolling Member’s Report and was able to acknowledge the hard work and dedication to Mother’s Union shown by Trish Cooper and Hazel Short. Their support since I took office has been invaluable and I am very grateful to them.

Three committee members, Glenys Tate, Molly Ellis and Linda Leicester, stepped down and thanks were given for their hard work 8 | messenger

and support over the years. We welcomed three new members to the committee- Carole Vollor, Kath Ion and Helena Mullard. All the rest of the committee sought re-election and were accepted en bloc. Enrolling member ,Kath Lane, Deputy Enrolling Members Pam Bentley and Kathy Edwards, Treasurer Trish Cooper and Secretary Hazel Short were all elected. New programmes for the coming year were distributed.

After the AGM closed Steve Turner from the Fire Service gave a short talk on Fire and Home Safety. It was very interesting and informative and a number of members signed up for Steve to make a home visit to offer advice.

Other news – Mothers’ Union Coffee Morning in OBGS and we warmly invite all to come along.

Our next meeting is The Wave of Prayer service at church on February 19th at 2.00pm. The speaker is Annette Smith the manager at the Morecambe Food Bank. As a gesture of thanks to Annette, members are invited to bring an item of food to donate to the Food Bank.

The MU lunch at Morecambe Golf Club takes place on Tuesday March 7th 2014 and members will shortly be requested to order their meal and pay for it.

Continuing thanks go to all who pray for those members who are experiencing difficulties at the moment. Prayer is at the heart of the Mothers’ Union and we are blessed at Holy Trinity to have members who uphold this.

Brownies’ 100th Birthday To celebrate the centenary of the Brownie movement, Brownies across the UK are encouraged to complete the Big Birthday Challenge Badge. This badge celebrates key milestones in the Brownies 100 year history. Girls are encouraged to devise their own programme and choose challenges that they wish to complete. One of the challenges includes inviting past members of Girl Guiding, whether they were Brownies or Guides, to place a light in a window on the evening of World Thinking Day, which is February 22nd., Lady Baden Powell’s birthday.

The girls of the 2nd BLS Brownie Unit would like to decorate tea light holders which could be offered to members of the Guiding community. They would like to place votives at the back of church so that any members of the congregation could take them to help in the challenge the weekend before World Thinking Day. Keep an eye open for further information about how you can help the Brownies achieve their challenge.

Dear friends We have a colony of sparrows roosting in our hedge. During the day I can often see and hear them outside my study window as they work their way steadily through the fat balls in the bird feeder. They are so cheerful – even on the dullest days they liven the spirits. I have become very fond and quite possessive of them.

However just recently we have had a sinister visitor – a sparrowhawk has started frequenting our garden. Out of the corner of my eye I have seen a quick swoop and a flash as he makes off with one of the little sparrows in his cruel talons. At the weekend we watched him devouring one right outside our dining room window and I felt sick as I watched. Are we feeding up the unsuspecting sparrows just to provide him with a good lunch? But of course this is nature – yes it’s cruel, but all animals have to survive. However it doesn’t stop me wishing I could change things and protect my sparrows – why can’t sparrowhawks eat potatoes? As I thought about this I was reminded of a magnet on my fridge door:God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.

There are some things in life as in nature that we can’t change – but, as the little verse says, there are some things we can change. Maybe pick up a newspaper or watch the news on TV, look at the stories and instead of feeling that there is nothing you can do to effect what is happening in the world, come up with just one thing to do that will have a positive impact on one of those events.

Wildlife Our minister refers to sparrows outside her study window. It used to be that most houses had a front garden with a hedge, a small lawn and one or more flower beds. The hedge provided protection for birds, and there was often a nest there in the spring. The lawn and flower beds provided food for the birds by way of grubs, insects, worms, snails and other creatures, plus seeds and berries when in sea Now, the front garden has often been grubbed out and replaced by concrete for the car. There is nothing for wildlife.

A Church Banner The picture opposite is of a banner which has recently been finished to hang in the East Kew Uniting Church in Melbourne, Australia. It is an enlarged copy of a coloured pencil drawing done by a man named Richard, who has an intellectual disability and who is part of the church’s advocacy program. People who see the drawing immediately see the nativity scene in the centre.

The area outside the centre can be seen as the creation, with dark and light, the land and the sea, the earth and rocks (Australia particularly has red rocks) and the growth of plants and coming of life.

St. Mark’s Nether Kellet

At the beginning of every New Year we all wonder what it holds in store for us and I am sure all those people affected by the storms and floods will be anxious that all their troubles will now be over. We are fortunate in this area that we have not suffered like them, but many of us will have other little problems and worries. The following poem by Iris Hesselden gives us hope and advice for:The Year Ahead Don’t be afraid of the year.

At St Marks we had to cancel our Sunday service because the boiler had broken down and there was no heating, but last Sunday we were able to re-open and found it warm again.

Thanks to the electricians who repaired it. Thanks also to everyone who helped with the Christmas activities and who decorated the Church so beautifully. We would also like to thank our friends from the Congregational Church for leading the Community Carols where we raised £71 for the Children’s Society.

The days are lengthening now, in the gardens the snowdrops are showing their white caps and the other spring flowers are poking though so we can begin to celebrated a new season, and wish everyone a healthy, peaceful and trouble free year.

The following is an extract from the Christmas Sermon given by Pope Francis: “In our personal history too, there are both bright and dark moments, lights and shadows. If we love God and our brothers and sisters, we walk in the light; but if our hearts are closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us and around us. “Whoever hates his brother – writes the Apostle John – is in the darkness, he walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has blinded his eyes” (1Jn 2:11).”

Harry Rowlands is going to Mexico during the Easter School Holidays with the Slyne Group of Urban Saints to help build a house for a poor family living close to the Northern border. Canon John Gibson invited him to talk about his trip at Mass and the Local North Lancashire Catenian Circle gave him a cheque to help with the cost. We wish him an enjoyable trip. The photo shows Tony Cafferty presenting a cheque for £100 to Harry. The team needs to find £1,300 for each person to travel to Mexico and to purchase building materials. The Catenian Circle which meets in Carnforth has also given £300 to Our Lady’s Catholic College to help finance a team to visit Uganda to take part in an education scheme to enhance the teaching of science subjects and mathematics. The Catenian Association is an international group of Catholic men who meet socially under the motto “Strengthening family life through friendship and faith”.

Congratulations to Pat Fuller on reaching her target of £7500 in just 18 months towards a village water system comprising of a bore hole well, a solar powered pump and a storage tank for a village in Zimbabwe. This has been her third project for a scheme managed by CAFOD and she is now waiting for a fourth scheme to be nominated.

Bolton-le-Sands WI Tuesday 14 February saw a packed Village Hall as Mrs Hazel Short, President, opened the first meeting of Bolton-le-Sands WI for 2014. Hazel welcomed members and guests, wished everyone a Happy New Year and gave best wishes to all members who were not well just now.

She gave special thanks to Jacky Millard who is now solely in charge of the tea arrangements.

Lovely flowers had been provided by Rita Davenport. Thanks were also due to everyone who had helped to make the Christmas Party such a success and to Joan Baker who arranged such good weather for our trip to Tatton park.

It was now time to present a cheque for £500 to Bob Bond as the representative from the Playground Appeal. He thanked everyone and informed the meeting that they were on target to have raised the £80,000 needed, thanks to good support from local business and lots of hard work. Hopefully work on the playground will start soon. We will be presenting further cheques next month to the Renal Patients Assn. and the Air Ambulance.

In 2015 the Nation Federation of WI will be 100 years old, and to mark this event a Baton will be touring the country. The Baton will be in Lancaster on 25 February, it will be carried from Williamson Park to Lancaster Castle and members will be able to take part, so watch this space.

On 13 March a coach will be going to Southport for the LFWI Council Meeting-Adam Henson (Country File) is one of the guest speakers, so it should be worth a visit.

Our speaker was Mr Simon Almond, and his topic “Life in Antarctica”. He proceeded to inform, amuse and generally entertain us. He had answered an advertisement in the Daily Express for a Joiner and Builder to join an Antarctic Survey and out of 400 applicants he was successful in joining the survey originally for 3 years and he ended up staying 10 years. He showed photos of living accommodation, wild life such as seals, penguins and rare birds. His stories of life out in the cold and dark of winter in the Antarctic with no daylight, were very funny; he seemed to be the type of person who could cope with anything and anybody . Members then spent some time with their own Committee member discussing the year ahead, gaining ideas for things members would like to do, see or hear. I am sure some good things will emerge. The Competition was won by Brenda Wood and the meeting closed `rather late`.

The Rotary Club of Carnforth’s Santa’s Sleigh collection was 6.5% up on last year, with £7,626 donated over the 16 outings. It was indeed wet on many nights and it took Santa’s Elves quite a long time to dry his outfit ready for the next day - but most worthwhile as all of this kindly donated money goes back into the surrounding area. Thanks also to Norjac Mitsubishi in Carnforth for providing the Sleigh towing vehicle, and to Speights of Lancaster for the satsumas to hand out to children - and thus complete the magic of Santa’s visits.

Slyne-with-Hest Kenyan Project In the September 2013 edition of The Messenger, we read about the Kenyan Project which is supported by a group in Slyne-with-Hest. Organiser Susan Rae has sent a review of their recent work.

As a result of our Christmas Appeal, we were able to send £427 to the New Life Home Trust, and £636 to the Mombassa Baby Rescue Centre. We have continued to send large amounts of clothing throughout the year, thanks to our band of sewers and knitters. We have also supported the Glad Tidings Orphanage, in Malawi. We are currently busily preparing to send another consignment of clothing to Malawi at the end of January, and the ladies of Slyne-with-Hest raised £100 towards the cost of transportation at the December Community Coffee Morning at the Memorial Hall, to add to the £600 given by our sister group in Ormskirk. We take stalls at the Community Coffee Morning on the first Saturday in the month, 10am til 12noon, and will be starting again in February.

Workshops are held on the first and third Tuesday in the month; 1.30pm until 3.30pm held in the Mawson room, The Memorial Hall, Slyne-with-Hest.

Everyone had a fantastic night and we were treated to some great acts from both children and adults alike - a huge thank you to all the performers for making it such a fun evening. A big thank you, too, to the village shops and businesses for their generous support with raffle prizes. The night raised ÂŁ500.

Community donations have been gratefully received this month from BCS Accountants and Tax Consultants, Bolton-le-Sands WI, and a generous donation from a couple in the village. Your support is greatly appreciated.

A coffee mornings is being held to raise further funds on the 20th of February - kindly organised as a joint fundraiser by the three village churches. The Ladies of Note have also generously agreed to hold a concert in aid of playground funds on the 22nd of March, and the United Reformed Church have kindly offered to host the evening. T his musical night of entertainment will start at 7pm and refreshments will be provided.

Tickets cost ÂŁ5 and will be available from the playground committee, the Ladies of Note and the United Reformed Church.

The contractors are due to start work in February and the work is estimated to take 10 weeks. The playground will be closed throughout the building period. The playing fields will remain open.

Through a lot of hard work, commitment and support we are very close to our target. This is our final fundraising push to reach our target and ensure the new playground achieves its potential. Men’s Group The December meeting of the Bolton-le-Sands Men’s Group took place in the Old Boys’ School on 9 December. It was the meeting when ladies were invited and sherry and mince pies were served during the break. The speaker was the chairman, Keith Budden, who spoke on his year as Mayor of Lancaster in 2008-09. Keith started the talk with a picture of himself as a baby and said that nobody would then have expected that he would one day become the Mayor of Lancaster. As Mayor, Keith had to chair the full City Council meetings, with all the political debate. There were many events to attend, often by Keith and his wife. These included school visits, where Keith soon learned that regular questions were whether he could keep the chain after his term of office, whether he was rich, etc. There were visits to many different local organisations. The Mayors of Lancashire each visited the others’ towns. Those who visited Lancaster all had a tour of the Town Hall and said afterwards that they had all ended up in court and prison. The tour had included the former Magistrates’ Court. During the year there was also a visit to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Keith and Heather enjoyed their year of mayoralty, even though it was quite hard work, meant a deal of travelling, and took up a lot of time.

The first meeting of 2014 of the Men’s Group took place in the Old Boys’ School on 13th January, when the speaker was Roger Mace and his subject was South Africa, which he had recently visited. He started with the Boer Trecker Memorial, near Pretoria; a memorial to Boers moving northwards. Roger then moved on to the Kruger National Park. It was quite cold at the time and the animals were active rather than lying around. The tourists were taken around in a vehicle with a viewing platform and saw elephants, rhinoceros, zebras, rebok, lions, white-headed eagles and several others.

The Sani Pass was crossed to see Lesotho, where lunch was taken at the highest pub in Africa A local school was visited in Port Elizabeth. The children were glad for a break from lessons. A rail museum, which was a former industrial railway was visited, where there were several preserved locomotives on display. To Roger’s surprise, a Mrs. Golly doll was seen on sale in a shop.

Roger’s tour went on to Cape Town and went on a trip up Table Mountain from where there was a good view of the built up area of Cape Town. There was also a picture of Table Mountain, which included a statue of Queen Victoria with orb and sceptre. A slavery museum was visited. There was a trip out to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner during the days of apartheid. It ceased to be a prison in 1996 and now is a preserved historical site. The botanical gardens were seen, with a variety of colourful flowers. More wildlife was seen, including a colony of penguins, and baboons. At Cape of Good Hope, which Roger pointed out is to the west of the most southerly point of Africa, there were ostriches. He had found the trip to Africa very interesting and informative.

Nether Kellet ladies have been busy knitting teddy bears to be given to children at home and abroad. Some will go via the International Aid Trust and the Shoebox Appeal, for children who live in poverty, have no parents or otherwise receive no presents at Christmas time. Others will be given to forums where parents of Down’s Syndrome children meet together for friendship and support. It is hoped, too, that some teddies will make their way to Kathmandu, to be given to children in orphanages.

We may never know the children who receive them, but we know they will be a source of comfort and joy, as only a small, soft teddy bear can be. The Mothers’ Union is very happy to source homes for the teddies and we are most grateful to the ladies of Nether Kellet, who first contacted us through Mrs Freda Bidder, our much loved member, who died in October.
