Brownie: Weaving Waiwera began in 2013 and represents a journey of applying permaculture principles to a suburban property in order to create a regenerative system to feed the whānau. Water weaves purposefully through this flat urban landscape. Be inspired by a rain catchment, nutrient ‘teas’, aquaponics, a greywater system, chook tractor, a bamboo wall and swales.

Jen & TJ: It’s tough to balance edibles with aesthetics, especially with a small section.

Jen and TJ have managed to pack in veggies, fruit trees, worms and chickens alongside native shrubs and trees, a potting/fish bench, outdoor bath, and floating boardwalk into a section with under 200m2 of usable space.

They’re happy to share tips for preserving veggies and meat, kombucha, and the experience of setting up solar for their home and electric van.

Dorothy, Jasmine & Land Based Training: New Start Gardens grows organic food for people in need. A community and education garden run by volunteers - a primary learning facility for Land Based Training. Students and volunteers concentrate on food production, all of which is donated to the local food bank.

Some produce is sold to fund running costs.

Melanie & Matt: Upcycling is a passion and this is evident throughout the garden. Check out their orchard, raised gardens and glasshouse.

They have also formed gardens out of hay bales and baths and converted several old sheds into a chicken coop and a potting shed.

They also have two milking goats, 15 chickens and two worm farms.

Big Jims Garden Centre Team: Big Jims has a working example of what people can do in their own backyard. A demonstration display of edible garden features and raised beds, surrounding a persimmon tree. A seasonal range of vegetables to show their specific growing conditions, with herbs and companion flowers. See their extensive range of fruit trees, some of which are espaliered, making this a very productive area.

Donna & Glen: Barren land transformed into a dynamic food forest, this 1ha consists of 23 fruiting trees, berries, vines, veggie beds for annuals, and support plants. Be inspired by their creativity and find a meditation garden with beautiful views, sculptures, a medicine wheel, three goldfish ponds and beehives. Learn how they use solar-powered hot water and their unique fence design to block out the wind.

Toko students: A Green Gold Enviroschool, all classes have enviro areas of responsibility that they learn about and maintain throughout the year. These include the school orchard, veggie gardens, herb gardens, chickens, bees, distilling, worm fertiliser factory, recycling centre and the recycled bottle house. The enviro leaders will share their enviro journey and talk about enviro areas and sustainability in action projects.
