by success The motoring industry is a highly competitive marketplace, so for an independent garage like Lindfield Motors to be celebrating its 40th anniversary is a superb achievement. Not only does it mean that they’ve been doing many things right all these years, but they’ve been able to embrace the huge changes that have occurred over that time – changes in car ownership, changes in the economy and, perhaps most of all, changes in technology. Lindfield Motors has always been a family business. Founded by Jim and Janette Yule, these days the garage business is run by their son Alan and his wife Nicola – and what a team they make! Alan is the technical expert and runs all the electronic and mechanical side of the business, ably supported by four highly qualified mechanics. Nicola’s front-of-house expertise is a hit with the customers and, together with two colleagues, she is in charge of all admin functions. Lindfield Motors provide a full range of garage services including MOTs and servicing, but also offer more sophisticated facilities such as engine and vehicle diagnostics for virtually any modern car. “We have always invested in technology and we have the skills and the software necessary to diagnose and fix even the most complex vehicle systems in house,” Alan said. “Customers can bring in any car and we can work on it without in any way endangering the manufacturer’s warranty, as long as we use approved replacement parts.”

Gone are the days of simply getting under the bonnet with a spanner because, as Alan explained, computers run pretty much all the car’s systems now, with some vehicles having as many as 40 separate control units. “So when you’re at Lindfield Motors and you see a mechanic sitting in the front seat of your car with a laptop, remember he’s not watching telly but simply doing his job,” Nicola laughed. Circumstances may have changed a lot over the last 40 years, but at the heart of the company’s success has always been a genuine care for their many, many customers. “And while we’re not ‘bargain basement’,” Nicola went on, “we don’t charge a premium on labour rates like main dealers who need to pay for swish showrooms and smart waiting areas. You’ll find a fish tank and a big smile in our reception area.” But Lindfield Motors has much more than that: an enviable reputation built up over 40 years for being a friendly, highly competent and good value local business.
