AT OUR 2021 HOMECOMING–REUNION WEEKEND, WE WENT PUBLIC WITH THE GIVE RISE CAMPAIGN, ANNOUNCING A GOAL OF $160 MILLION — MORE THAN DOUBLE OUR LARGEST PREVIOUS CAMPAIGN.

The outpouring of support has been inspiring but not surprising, because you and our many dedicated donors know how important it is to lift up Susquehanna students. You know what a smart and good investment it is.

Students are truly transformed here, and as a group their career trajectories are dramatically changed for the better. Susquehanna has the 9th most economically diverse student body in the U.S., and yet the lifetime earnings of our alumni are among the top 11% in nation. The educational opportunities your generosity makes possible not only change the lives of our students, but they change the futures of entire families.

Those are important points of pride for the University, but more importantly Susquehanna alumni have been committed for generations to promoting the common good. They are ethical leaders in their workplaces and in their communities, and they have an unfailing commitment to service, which we lift up annually on campus through SU Give and SU Serve. I am always thrilled to learn the myriad ways our graduates sustain those traditions beyond our campus walls.

Lynn and I have the remarkable privilege to witness every day how the generosity celebrated in this report makes good things happen for our great students. DURING HOMECOMING–REUNION WEEKEND, GENEROUS DONORS WERE INDUCTED INTO THE SUSQUEHANNA SOCIETY FOR THEIR EXTRAORDINARY PHILANTHROPY. THE FAMILY OF ROBERT I. ESTILL

Robert I. Estill ’65 graduated from Susquehanna with a degree in business after having first attended Valley Forge Military College. As a student, Estill was a member of the university’s business society and was a brother of Phi Mu Delta.

Estill was also an accomplished student-athlete, playing multiple intramural sports and varsity football as an offensive tackle under Coach Jim Garrett. He captained the team during his senior season and, despite some adversity faced on and off the gridiron, he and his teammates showed tenacity, support and collegialism — fully exemplifying what it means to be Susquehanna student-athletes.

After graduating, Estill led a successful career in accounting, construction and real estate. He has attributed his success in business to the values instilled in him by Head Coach Jim Garrett and Assistant Coach Bob Pittello ’51. An active alumnus, Estill remains a loyal supporter of Susquehanna athletics as both a fan and booster.

On Sept. 10, Susquehanna dedicated the Robert I. Estill Field House in honor of Estill’s significant philanthropy to the university, which has supported capital improvements to athletic facilities and equipment. Estill also established the Robert I. Estill Endowed Scholarship Fund, which supports students who qualify for financial aid.

EDWARD ’69 AND DONNA SCHMIDT

Edward R. Schmidt ’69, emeritus board member, graduated from Susquehanna with a degree in economics and later from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1972.

He is a retired partner of the Indianapolis based law firm, Krieg DeVault, LLP, where he chaired the taxexempt and nonprofit organizations practice group and served as a member of the firm’s executive committee. Schmidt served as executive vice president, general counsel-secretary and was a member of the Board of Directors of USA Group, Inc., the largest guarantor of student loans in the United States.

Schmidt gained emeritus status after serving on Susquehanna’s Board of Trustees for 17 years, during which he served as a vice chair of the board and chair of its Compensation Committee.

In 2003, Schmidt established The Edward S. & A. Rita Schmidt Lectureship in Ethics. The Schmidt Lecture brings distinguished scholars and leaders to campus to speak publicly on contemporary topics and historic standards. Schmidt has emphasized his desire to impart to students an understanding and appreciation for the value and role of ethics in professional and personal endeavors. It is his vision that this lectureship will encourage and promote dialogue on ethical thinking in all areas of academic preparation and contribute to successful personal lives and professional careers upon graduation. In forming the lecture, Schmidt named it in honor of his late parents, Edward S. and A. Rita Schmidt, formerly of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, recognizing that the first teachers of ethics and moral behavior are parents.

Schmidt also endowed The March Fellowship in Ethical Leadership, named for Terry L. March ’67, which provides students the opportunity to research, publish, and present scholarly work related to ethical behavior and leadership. By funding these initiatives, Schmidt has recognized and saluted Susquehanna University and its faculty and staff for the profound and formative experience he received while attaining his degree.

Schmidt is a member of the Board of Trustees of Strada Education Network, where he served as chairman from 2017–2020 and Indiana Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center, Inc. He also currently serves as the chairman of Healthcare Initiatives, Inc., an Indianapolis based charitable foundation and as a member of the Law School Advisory Council at the University of Notre Dame.

Schmidt was a founder and director of MetroBank, of Indianapolis, and a past director of Lumina Foundation for Education, Inc.; Crossroads Rehabilitations Centers of Indianapolis; Fairbanks Hospital; and Title Industry Assurance Company. He has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Land Title Association.

Schmidt is a member of several bar associations, including the Indianapolis Bar Association where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow.

He and his wife, Donna, are the parents of three adult sons, Jeffrey D. Schmidt, Esq., Todd E. Schmidt, M.D., and Michael J. Schmidt, Esq.

THE FAMILY OF JENNIFER LINSCOTT TIETGEN ’97

In January, Kenneth C. and Elizabeth L. Tietgen P’97 established the Jennifer Linscott Tietgen ’97 Scholarship in memory of their daughter, Jennifer Linscott Tietgen ’97. Their philanthropy also honors the 25th anniversary of Jennifer’s graduation from Susquehanna.

As a student at Susquehanna, Jennifer studied psychology. She also played varsity soccer and was a sister of Kappa Delta sorority. Upon graduating, she attended New Haven University and, despite a diagnosis of melanoma, earned a master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology. She left New Haven with a promising future and an enviable career with Cisco Systems.

Though her disease progressed, Jennifer fought back with staunch resolution, fortitude and resilience, ever-present humor and unwavering hope; buoyed by the love and support of family and friends. Jennifer died June 13, 2002, and soon after the Jennifer Linscott Tietgen Foundation was established to develop her legacy and honor her commitment to making life better for others.

The fund established in her memory will support scholarships for students who qualify for financial aid. Scholarships may be awarded to first-year students, and may be awarded for additional years based on their academic merit and maintaining a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

As an endowed fund, the income generated will support generations of future Susquehannans in perpetuity, while honoring Jennifer’s enduring legacy

DONOR FEATURE BUSINESS ALUMNUS HELPS STUDENTS

PREPARE FOR TOMORROW

Some people say that business is just business. Steven Meyer ’96 disagrees.

“For me, business is personal. It’s about people,” Mr. Meyer says. “Susquehanna taught me a lot about business, but it also taught me how to treat people well in business.”

As a student, Mr. Meyer studied accounting. In 1999, he founded Advisors Mortgage Group, which today is a multi-state mortgage banker that believes in delivering a seamless, stress-free mortgage experience to all customers. His passion for helping people attain their dreams of homeownership is the driving force behind Advisors.

In addition to helping his customers achieve their dreams, Mr. Meyer also hopes to help Susquehanna’s business students prepare to achieve theirs. In 2022, Mr. Meyer and his wife, Amy, helped the Sigmund Weis School of Business expand and enhance its signature trading room in Apfelbaum Hall.

The Steven T. ’96 and Amy Meyer Trading Room was expanded from 12 to 24 computers and includes 12 Bloomberg Terminals, which give Susquehanna students access to real-time financial market data. The room is now large enough for professors to hold full classes there.

In addition to supporting capital improvements and technology upgrades to the trading room, the Meyers’ gift also created a student-managed investment fund to allow for increased opportunities of practical learning, as finance majors place and track trades by investing real funds in the stock market.

“I hope that this room will help Susquehanna professors teach,” Mr. Meyer says. “And ultimately, I hope that it will help its students learn.”

The Meyers have also endowed a fund to support faculty development and programming in the Department of Finance in perpetuity. In addition to their support of the Sigmund Weis School of Business, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer also supported renovations to Seibert Hall’s model classroom — now known as the Diane and Al Meyer Classroom — named in honor of Mr. Meyer’s parents.

“Susquehanna helped prepare me for a career that has rewarded me tenfold,” Mr. Meyer adds. “I am so proud to be able to give back to the university that has given so much to me.”

Susquehanna is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Meyer for their immense generosity, which will support generations of Susquehannans as they become thoughtful leaders, critical thinkers and global citizens.

DONOR FEATURE ALUMNUS HOPES TO INSPIRE NEXT GENERATION OF EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTISTS

Mark Yoder ’80 has always been passionate about the earth and the story it can tell.

As a student at Susquehanna, Mr. Yoder studied geological and environmental science. He later earned an MBA from the University of Denver, and today is the owner of Granite Reality & Investment LLC, a full-service real estate agency headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

Recently, Mark and his wife, Deborah, gifted the university an impressive fossil collection and museum-quality display cases, which were dedicated during Homecoming–Reunion Weekend 2022. The Mark ’80 and Deborah Yoder Fossil Collection is on display in Susquehanna’s Natural Sciences Center and tells the story of terrestrial evolution during the middle-to-late Paleozoic Era.

The collection contains impressive fossil finds from around the world and represents some of the significant transformations in organisms that occurred in response to global environmental change.

“It is our hope that this display will be a destination where students can gather and discuss the science from their classes

and research,” Mr. Yoder says. “We also hope that it will be a place for them to share their hopes and dreams for the future.”

The Yoders also established the Mark ’80 and Deborah Yoder Scholarship to recognize Mr. Yoder’s commitment to Susquehanna and his passion for geological sciences. The scholarship will give preference to a student who is studying in the earth and environmental sciences, environmental studies, or ecology.

Mr. and Mrs. Yoder have funded their scholarship with a legacy gift to the university. As an endowed fund, it will support students in perpetuity — deserving recipients will benefit from their generosity for generations to come.

“I feel blessed to be able to give back to the institution that laid the foundation for my career and allowed me to pursue my interests,” Mr. Yoder says. “Deborah and I hope that these gifts will inspire current and future students to follow all of their scientific and environmental passions.”

Susquehanna is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Yoder for their generous philanthropy, which will support generations of environmental scientists and improve the experience of all visitors to the Natural Sciences Center.

GIVE RISE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES THROUGH JUNE 2023

Susquehanna has surpassed the goal of its capital campaign, Give Rise: The Campaign to Elevate Susquehanna University, months in advance of the fundraising effort’s conclusion.

To date, over $170 million has been raised through the Give Rise capital campaign — exceeding the campaign’s $160 million goal, the most ambitious in the university’s history.

“Exceeding our goal so quickly is tremendous,” said University President Jonathan Green. “With six months still to go in the campaign, unlimited opportunities remain to give and create additional scholarships for students, support updated technology to classrooms, or help future generations of SU students in other ways. Students are truly transformed here. Their seemingly unattainable dreams become reality because of what our collective philanthropy makes possible.”

The campaign, which began gaining momentum privately in 2012 and launched publicly last year, runs through June 2023 and supports student scholarships, capital improvements and Susquehanna’s endowment.

Of the current amount raised, donors have contributed over $95 million to Susquehanna’s endowment through direct

contributions and legacy gift commitments. A $6 million matching endowment challenge was issued during the public launch of the campaign and was met in less than a year — contributing $12 million to the endowment. This lifts Susquehanna’s current endowment market value to nearly $200 million.

The campaign has generated over 15,000 individual gifts. As a result, 11 major capital improvement projects have already been completed and 180 new scholarships have been established.

“The overwhelming support of our community has been vital to our being able to exceed our goal at this early date,” said Melissa Komora, vice president for advancement at Susquehanna. “I’m confident that with the continued support of our community we will be able to announce a campaign total that far exceeds our expectations.”

DONOR FEATURE ALUMNA ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP TO AID NON-U.S. CITIZENS

Susquehanna attracts talented young people from all walks of life who bring with them a range of life experiences and different social and cultural backgrounds.

Jamie Malachowski ’09 Hindman, vice president of the university’s Alumni Board, understands the importance of making an SU education accessible to students from underserved backgrounds — regardless of their financial situations.

“My stepsister was an international student,” Mrs. Hindman says. “I saw first-hand the challenges she faced with obtaining financial aid for college.”

Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible to receive federal or state loans, grants or scholarships.

“My stepsister — despite being a well-rounded student, active volunteer, and leader in multiple clubs and organizations — looked for private scholarships and other means of aid but found it difficult to successfully obtain financial support for college,” Mrs. Hindman adds.

In 2020, Mrs. Hindman, along with her husband, Matthew, established The Jamie Malachowski ’09 Hindman and Matt Hindman Scholarship Fund, which awards support for tuition, room and/or board to students who are not U.S. citizens and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above.

“I was inspired to try to help fill the void relating to financial aid for students of underrepresented groups,” Mrs. Hindman says. “It is important that these students have the same opportunities as others to learn from — and to share their perspectives with — the Susquehanna community.

“Having a diverse student body is critical, as it helps students understand perspectives different from their own and gain a more well-rounded, worldly viewpoint,” she adds.

It is Mr. and Mrs. Hindman’s hope that this scholarship will enable international students and other students from underserved areas to attend Susquehanna “without having to stress about financial aid while at school.”

Susquehanna is grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Hindman for establishing their scholarship fund, which will ensure that deserving students are afforded the opportunity to prepare for lives of achievement, leadership and service well into the future.
