Finding a New Home and Purpose in the American South, While Bringing a Passion for Good Coffee to a Whole New Community

As you read the story of Barnyard Coffee, I promise that you’ll be inspired. As an entrepreneur and Christian believer, my conversation with Debbie Peris, one of the owners, has put wind in my sails. I’m so excited to share a part of it on these pages with you. But first, make yourself a fresh cup of coffee to sip and enjoy from the samples of Barnyard Coffee that you received in the Décor Box.

Debbie and Derek have a vision to provide a full coffee experience and transport customers “from burlap bag to brew.” Therefore, the roastery equipment and processes will be in plain sight while you order your Barnyard Coffee or Debbie’s famous sourdough bread and baked goods.

A Dream Realized

Debbie boasts that her husband Derek has always dreamt of owning and operating a coffee roastery. In 2015, on a five-acre home located in the Pacific Northwest, Barnyard Coffee became a reality. Debbie chose the company name as a reminder of the many times she sat looking out her window at the chickens, horses and “that barnyard.” Even with the meager beginnings of a small roaster the size of a toaster oven, the goal has always been to produce good, small batch coffee using organic green coffee beans.

During the couple’s years in the Cascade Mountain foothills, the Peris family also helped run a Christian retreat center. However, with Covid-19 lockdowns and stay home orders in early 2020, the center was forced to make cuts and Derek resigned from his director position. So, in May 2021, the Peris family and Barnyard Coffee moved to Louisiana without ever stepping foot in the state!

Finding Home in Minden, Louisiana

When I asked Debbie why they chose to relocate sight unseen to Minden, Louisiana, she explained that they had grown very close to a couple of churches that frequented the retreat center over the years. They started to look at the towns where those churches were planted, one being in Virginia and the other in Louisiana. She recalls how God kept closing doors in Virginia, but doors kept opening in Louisiana. So last summer, they made the move to the small town of Minden.

If you’re wondering where you’ve heard the name Minden before, it has recently made national headlines in relation to HGTV’s Home Town Kickstart Presented by People television show. The series, hosted by Ben and Erin Napier from HGTV’s Home Town, is scheduled to premiere this year. It will showcase six quintessential small towns across the country as they receive a major revitalization. Minden will be one of the towns given a fresh start with three major renovations. The Napiers will remodel the home of a local hero, a small business and a community center.

Planting Roots

Debbie knew that she wanted to plant Barnyard Coffee in the middle of this newly revitalized, soon to be bustling small town. Therefore, the Perises just purchased an 8,000 square foot building originally built in 1882 on Main Street. She is elated that the original tin ceiling tiles and exposed brick remain. It is the very brick for which their newest venture, Brick Street Coffee, a coffee shop and bakery, is named.

In the coming Fall of 2022, the town of Minden will gather yet again to witness the revitalization of a 140-year-old historical building at the grand opening of Brick Street Coffee. You can believe that Tina, my bestie, and myself will be there for that ‘brew-tiful’ day!

"Established in Washington state, BarnYard Coffee was a lifelong dream of my husband, Marine Corps Veteran, Derek Peris. I’m Debbie and Derek and I have been married for 29 years and have 4 wonderful children. In 2015 we started brewing our own coffee and in 2020 our business really took off. We have since packed our bags and moved from the Pacific Northwest to Minden, Louisiana, an exodus surrounded by God’s provision and direction.

From roasting, packaging, and processing orders to shipping across all 50 states, our entire operation is a family affair. We are so excited for our newest venture Brickstreet Coffee, in downtown Minden. This full experience roastery and bakery is set to open Fall 2022. " -Debbie and Derek Peris

It’s no secret that Tina’s favorite blend of Barnyard Coffee is their English Toffee. Don’t expect “in your face” artificial flavor like 3 pumps of syrup, but more of the lingering subtle taste of a fresh bite of toffee. You’re also receiving “Coconut Infusion”, Susie’s favorite choice which tastes like vacation in a cup! And lastly, for the classic coffee drinker, the very smooth Medium Roast, Guatemala. It’s undertones of nuts and spice are truly delicious. All of these blends and so many more are available at barnyardcoffee.com.
