s many of you know, I spent a great deal of my childhood in Texas. I have fond memories of family evenings with a close friend digging into classic country and southern rock songs with nothing more than his deep voice, guitar, and love of entertaining. He was always reluctant to play at first, but after the required nudges, he coincidentally would have his guitar in the truck and treat everyone to a wonderful experience that is hard to match.

My wife and I recently opened the door to music in the Breaux household by purchasing a guitar for our son and a piano for our youngest daughter. Each kid chose their own instrument. Microphones, amps, and lots of wires later, we were geared up for them to make some music.

So, we found a great music instructor for weekly lessons. It was slowgoing at first. While I tried offering words of wisdom (as if I had a clue) about the learning curve and ultimate satisfaction of completing their first song, our kids reluctantly pushed on.

Then it happened. Our son learned the chords and vocals to an entire song – Justin Beiber’s Love Yourself. He began playing it more. He tested it out in front of his friends, eventually graduating to open mic nights at local eateries, as well as small festival performances set up by his instructor.

Not wanting to be a one-song performer, my son is pushing hard to learn more songs for future shows. I think he’s caught the performing bug. Our daughter is close behind, even though she is still a little unsure about the performance part.

Taking things one step further, I used an iPad (and more wires) to turn our living room into a karaoke studio. Okay, so I just made that sound better than it really is, but it’s a cool setup nonetheless. What my wife and I witnessed after was nothing short of amazing. Our kids and their friends have been singing just about every song you can think of. They sing some seriously, while others are simply for kicks. The most important thing is that they are laughing, dancing, and having a great time.

I’m glad we left our bubble and opened a new opportunity for them.

Even if the ultimate outcome is just for them to be able to pick up an instrument and make close friends and family feel good on a relaxing evening in the backyard – it’s worth it.

The Show Must Go On Robert J Townsend Brings His Acting Experience to Westview High School

R

obert J Townsend, a local actor and teacher, fell into the theatrical world somewhat accidentally. He started off studying chemistry at UCSD and transferred on a whim to Cal State University, Long Beach, where he focused on music. After that, he got his Master’s at UC Irvine in vocal performance. Now that he’s earning a living in the acting field, Robert explained, “I call my job my ‘accidental career,’ because I started off performing just for fun. My early training as a musician and a singer really propelled me and slowly but surely I kept growing and learning. Before I knew it, I was working year-round as an actor!”

Robert has appeared on Broadway and on national tours of Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Camelot, Grease, and even the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes. As for his roles in local regional theaters, Robert has played Sweeney in Sweeney Todd, Captain Hook in Peter Pan, Julian Marsh in 42 nd Street, and Papa Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Robert admitted, “I’ve been so fortunate with my acting career; it’s taken me all over the world, and all over the country many times over.”

Now that he has a young son with his wife, whom he met during a production of Oklahoma at the Welk Resort, Robert is less interested in worldwide travels and more interested in staying close to home and hearth. Therefore, in addition to performing in local productions, Robert is also the drama and tech teacher and director at Westview High School.

“What I like the most is collaborating with incredible young adults and artists. The amazing shows we put on are the result of the kids coming together, dedicating hours of their free time in this very fast-paced school to make something unique and beautiful," said Robert.

Some of those unique and beautiful shows have included ambitious choices, such as Blithe Spirit, in which the student design team created a black and white set similar to an old movie, and Noises Off, a farce with a pantomime section. Robert proudly proclaimed, “Both turned out to be incredible successes and were exciting to watch! The dedication and talent of the students runs deep at this school, and I feel so lucky to work side by side with the leaders and creators of tomorrow.” 

e’ana Reyes’ success story does not follow the typical trajectory. This 92129 Student Star rises above the crowd not only for her accomplishments but for what she has overcome to achieve them. A senior at Westview High School, Ke’ana has played an active role in the school’s ROTC, National Honor Society, and peer counseling program. “I enjoy offering help to people in need and try my best to serve others first before I serve myself because that is how I was raised,” said Ke’ana. “I also find volunteering stress-relieving because I know I am providing a sense of purpose.”

For a time, Ke’ana questioned her sense of purpose.

Adopted by her grandparents, she spent much of her childhood with her beloved aunt, who had Down syndrome. When her aunt was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in 2011, Ke’ana experienced great loneliness. After working with a doctor and learning about depression, she began therapy. “It took five years for me to become

mentally and emotionally balanced but during these five years, I became part of peer counseling, where I got the privilege to mentor peers who faced the same or nearly the same hardships as myself,” Ke’ana shared. “It made me feel better knowing that I applied my hardships into something positive at Westview.”

On the weekends, Ke’ana spends her time serving meals in downtown San Diego at Father Joe’s Village. This endeavor is important to her on a personal level, as her father was a homeless combat veteran. She also shares her positive influence as a high school aide at Deer Canyon Elementary School. There, Ke’ana works alongside teachers to support instruction, help with classroom management, and supervise on the playground and during field trips. “The most challenging aspect of my job is that I have amazing kids and I find myself being more of a friend rather than an aide,” she admitted. Volunteering became such an important facet of Ke’ana's life after joining ROTC; she was required to complete one volunteer event per quarter. Since then, Ke’ana has served as community service officer in the ROTC and as project leader for the National Honor Society. Ke’ana explained, “My main responsibility was to contact nearby schools and organizations and look for potential events for my peers."

Today, Ke’ana continues to maintain her immaculate grades at Westview, remains committed to serving others, and looks ahead to college, where she plans on pursuing her dream of studying computer science or nursing. 

or a family educated in logic-based fields – computer scientist Andrew has a Ph.D. in physics, and wife Dushenka has a degree in mathematics – the Silberfarbs have a poetic approach to life. Describing their beloved PQ neighborhood near Adobe Bluffs Park, Dushenka admitted, “We love being able to watch the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean from Hilltop Park and the cool ocean breezes that come up the canyon.” Andrew added, “We also love seeing the hot air balloons in the evenings and the glorious sunrise over Black Mountain in the mornings.” Artistic and environmental beauty is something this family appreciates.

Andrew and Dushenka met while studying at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, known for its majestic, inspiring landscape. Having moved to San Diego from Massachusetts last July, the Silberfarbs have immersed themselves in their new surroundings by visiting museums, going on nature walks, bicycling, and attending live performances. Dushenka is no stranger to the arts, and even taught flamenco classes at the Stanford University Dance Department while the family was based there for a year.

Now the family’s children – Sophie, 7, Elena, 5, and Aidan, 4 – express themselves artistically and athletically. All three enjoy ballet and piano, and the girls adore choir and art. In addition, Sophie and Aidan play T-ball, and Elena is constantly writing letters to her far-flung family and friends.

The Silberfarbs also embrace their unique blended home, which includes Dushenka’s mother, Suzette, and Duschenka’s youngest sister, Jeselle, who is also the birth mother of Sophie and Aidan.

Cognizant of multi-cultural living, the Silberfarbs have extended family members with various ethnicities, such as Spanish-Portuguese, German, Cambodian, and even Romanian. Their family meals reflect their diverse tastes, and they’ve been known to make homemade pita, falafel, baba ghanoush, hummus, tabouli, and even Persian ice cream.

As food lovers, the Silberfarbs are strict vegans who eat only organic foods. Dushenka proclaimed, “We make most of what we eat ourselves, including bread by grinding grain in our flour mill, crackers, juices, ice cream, and jam.” Every spring they plant pumpkin seeds and in the fall they harvest mature pumpkins for baking pumpkin pies, which go perfectly with their unusual Thanksgiving “turkey.” Andrew explained, “Every year we bake bread in the shape of a roast turkey as the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving table!” Check out the Silberfarb's recipes at www.modelvegan.com. 

The Joy of Service Darshana Patel Strives to Serve the Community With Efficiency, Passion, and Pride

D

arshana Patel finds joy in helping others and is energized by civic engagement. She was just recently elected as a Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education Trustee and is looking forward to serving the community in this capacity. Darshana is also a very active volunteer at Park Village Elementary School (PVES), where her children attend.

“Currently, most of my volunteer time is spent at our elementary school.

I am the executive vice president of the Park Village Foundation. Over the summer, the PTA and foundation decided to consolidate fundraising and school programs under the foundation. This has created a larger organization that requires a focused, organized, and highly collaborative team of supplemental programs for PVES students,” explained Darshana.

In addition to her positions on the PUSD Board of Education and with the PVES Foundation, Darshana volunteers with the San Diego Police Department Captain’s Advisory Board, the Rancho Peñasquitos Planning Board, and the Rancho Family YMCA Farmers Market Committee. Within each group, she holds a leadership role and is committed to serving the interests of the community the best she can. “I have a personal goal to be an effective member of any group I join,” stated Darshana, who is also passionate about being a role model for local youth. As a Ph.D. scientist, Darshana has worked in academia, government, and the private sector, but has always found time to volunteer.

When Darshana is not volunteering, she can often be found reading, gardening, and learning new hobbies. “I have a love for learning, so you might just find me picking up a new hobby, like when I learned the art of stained glass while on a six-week sabbatical from work at Genentech, Inc.,” said Darshana with a laugh.

Darshana, her husband, and their three children moved to Rancho Peñasquitos from the Bay Area in 2010. “We love the community feel – we are surrounded by caring, responsible, and helpful neighbors that make PQ such an inviting and safe place to live. When we moved, we specifically chose this community because of the Poway Unified School District and the close proximity to beaches, parks and the city.

We really do feel like PQ is the San Diego sweet spot,” Darshana revealed. She and her family enjoy participating in PQ’s many community events, as well as walking in the Los Peñasquitos Preserve and watching the hot air balloons at sunset from Hilltop Park. 

92129 resident Emmet Pierce received nine writing awards at the San Diego Press Club’s 43rd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards. His articles swept the criminal justice in nondaily newspapers category, winning first, second, and third place. He also won first place for business writing; second place for history reporting, arts and entertainment reporting, education writing, and real estate writing; and third place for science/technology reporting. “I’m very, very honored because the competition in this contest is strong,” said Emmet.

“Getting recognition from your colleagues is a great motivator to continue doing your very best work.”

Emmet is a freelance writer who writes primarily about business and personal finance. He previously spent nine years with the real estate section of a local newspaper, where he covered issues ranging from home improvement to home sales and foreclosures. City to Preserve Land Near PQ The City of San Diego recently purchased an 80-acre plot of land near Rancho Peñasquitos as part of the continued implementation of the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) throughout the county. The land, located west of Interstate 15 and east of Bernardo Center Drive, will connect two portions of Black Mountain Open Space Park, which has been identified as a biologically critical region. Acquisition of the land will protect it from future development and ensure the conservation of threatened native flora and fauna. The property will be managed by the open space division of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The MSCP is a habitat conservation planning program which aims to preserve the unique biodiversity within an approximate 900-squaremile area in southwestern San Diego County. Councilman Mark Kersey, along with City staff and community members, helped break ground on the new Torrey Meadows Neighborhood Park in Torrey Highlands. The five-acre park will serve the neighborhoods of Torrey Highlands, Black Mountain Ranch, and Rancho Peñasquitos. Once completed, the park will offer a wide variety of amenities and provide space and activities for people of all ages to enjoy, including a multi-purpose turf field, basketball court, picnic facilities, shade structures, and play areas designed for children ages two to 12.

“This project has been long-awaited and will be a great addition to the Rancho Peñasquitos, Black Mountain Ranch, and Torrey Highlands communities, providing a much needed space for children and adults to enjoy,” said Councilman Kersey. Grading of the lot began in August 2016; the project is expected to be open for public use by this summer.

There’s a New Captain in Town The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has named Acting Captain Charles Lara as the new commanding officer of its Northeastern Division, which serves the neighborhoods of Rancho Peñasquitos, Carmel Mountain, Miramar, Miramar Ranch North, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Encantada, Sabre Springs, and Scripps Ranch. Charles will oversee two lieutenants, 13 sergeants, over 90 officers, and three teams of volunteers, ensuring that each of these entities are fulfilling SDPD’s mission to maintain safe and peaceful communities. Charles has made it his personal goal to meet with as many community groups as possible to gather feedback regarding the quality of the division’s services and to continue to work on reducing property crime rates in the area.

Charles began his career in the Northeastern Division 17 years ago. He now lives close to the area with his wife and two children.

HILLTOP RECREATION CENTER PROVIDES VISITORS WITH PLENTY TO DO WHILE TAKING IN THE VIEW

A

s its name suggests, Hilltop Recreation Center sits atop a hill overlooking Rancho Peñasquitos, with the rest of the city, mountains, and glistening ocean visible in the

distance. Besides spectacular views, Hilltop is also home to one of the original community entrance signs, a quarter-mile walking loop surrounding a sprawling grass area, picnic tables, basketball courts, an indoor facility with a kitchen and meeting rooms, and a trailhead to Black Mountain. The park serves as the designated venue for several community events throughout the year including a Western Theme BBQ in July, Oktoberfest in the fall, and Winter Wonderland in December, and is a popular location for birthday parties, picnics, and other activities with family and friends.

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF HILLTOP RECREATION CENTER?

The park is being built in three phases. The park is 34 acres, 14 of which are able to be used for development. The cost for Phase I and Phase II was $5,214,672, the majority of which came from developer fees. Phase I was completed in 1994 with the construction of the recreational building, Tot Lot, basketball courts, open play area, picnic areas, and parking lot. Phase II was completed in 2008, with the construction of a second Tot Lot, additional parking, open play area, picnic areas, upgrades to the first Tot Lot, and 40-foot flag pole. Phase III is to be constructed in 2020-2022 and will be a soccer and roller hockey arena located in the Phase II open play area.

WHEN THE CENTER WAS FIRST BUILT, WHAT NEEDS DID IT MEET FOR THE COMMUNITY?

Within the City of San Diego, there should be a community park for every 25,000 residents in the area.

This park is the second community park in PQ and fulfills that requirement. Canyonside Community Park was built in the mid-‘80s and ‘90s.

E

ach contest participant submitted a short essay on the topic “PQ Youth Civic Engagement!” Although picking just two winners from among the many entries received was exceedingly difficult, the two essays below represent the best of their grade-level categories. We were both impressed and inspired by the words of our community’s youth and we hope you will be too. Their essays are what “Growing Up PQ” is all about. Please join us in congratulating these two young writers.

I attend Black Mountain Middle School. That’s a fact. I’m honored to be in their Academy program. Once again, a fact. BMMS is the best school ever. Debatable, but if you ask me, that’s what I’ll say. Why? Everyone there is incredibly involved in the community. From the Builder’s Club to the Bear Hugs Club, there are countless ways to give back.

However, my favorite is by donating to Rady Children’s Hospital.

To me, it’s a way of helping others, showing Raider pride, and giving BMMS culture.

Last year, in sixth grade, I remember my language arts teacher telling us about this opportunity. You could donate any amount of money you wished and it would all go toward research into leukemia. They played a video for us and it really hit home. There were kids my age speaking to us.

One cell dividing incorrectly could potentially make me one of those cancer patients. What if I were in their shoes? It would be, in short, terrible. I began tallying up how much money I had in my backpack.

Our whole school gets really into donations. We held a friendly competition to see how

much we could raise and we sold purple accessories to show spirit (and raise even more!). Those few weeks that the fundraiser ran made me so proud to be a Black Mountain Raider. All of us, with all of our differences, came together to fight for the same cause.

Each of us scraped a few bucks together and, instead of buying bags of kettle corn, made an investment towards fighting leukemia.

That might not sound like much, but for broke middle schoolers, it’s huge. On normal spirit days, a handful of students will go all out and the rest will wear a red bracelet or something. But on Purple Day, we dressed up with vengeance. I saw students walking around in purple tutus and purple fairy wings without shame. I saw purple jeans, purple shirts, and purple lipstick. And I loved it. To others, it might have been an eyesore, but to me, it showed compassion, generosity, and acceptance. When I think of the culture of BMMS, I now think purple.

We raised thousands of dollars. Do you hear me?

Thousands. Okay, not a big sum to older Peñasquitos residents, but we don’t have a stable source of income.

We earn quarters for doing chores or we bum off of our parents, and we collected them up for this cause. This Raider Pride will help us in the future, and perhaps the funding we created will give someone else one. It gives me a boost of happiness to know that, combined with Black Mountain’s efforts, I’ve made a difference.

Meilynn Shi 12th grade Westview High School The trailer sits behind a small church. Fifteen fridges hum in the back. At 3 p.m., the doors open and families file in. A husband and wife, a tired mother of three, a man in the woes of a failed business venture. As I stock crates with vegetables, fruits, and our high school’s chicken patties, my thoughts return to when I first began the crusade for food recovery.

Last fall, while writing a school newspaper article on San Diego’s waste management system, I discovered that citywide, we waste 200,000 tons of food each year. I flipped through records from our cafeteria and found that each week, we threw away hundreds of pounds of food on campus. I thought of my father’s stories of the three-year famine that struck his home country when he was little: he lived with his grandmother in the countryside, where some days they could only eat tree bark to survive.

Any food was a blessing. What our school had in surplus could be shared with those who needed it most.

Determined to reshape our school’s practices, I approached our cafeteria supervisors about donating leftovers. I told them of the Good Samaritan Act and other legal protections to address worries about liability, then returned with a 10-page proposal, but they weren’t convinced. I understood they were concerned it would pose operational difficulties, given they were already strained for resources, but I didn’t let the conversation end.

I spent the next six months digging through federal, state, and local policies, and contacting food pantries about proper

storage for fresh produce and cooked foods.

I spoke with the founder of Food Rescue in Indiana, the director of Feeding America Food Recovery, our district EPA representative, and a teacher who championed a successful food recovery system at another California high school.

Slowly, I pieced together a full procedure for my school. I arranged a meeting with our food and nutrition operations manager, our cafeteria supervisors, and the director of a local food pantry. As I presented my findings, explaining how the program would be student-driven with minimal impact on operations and more importantly, help families in PQ, the conversation shifted from presenting proposals to establishing logistics. We optimized food handling, storage, safety procedures, and created a model for other schools to follow. We strove to reduce the amount of food overprepped each day. We invited special-education students to help record and package leftover foods, providing them opportunities to build vocational skills. And in February, we loaded our first box for pickup.

Since then, we’ve donated more than 3,500 pounds of food. But we’ve only just begun. We’re now working to build a campus garden where we can grow fresh produce for our cafeteria, connect with local nonprofits to cultivate gardens in the community, and improve access to healthy foods. PQ is a better place because of what we’ve done together as a community, stirring action, driving change, inspiring each other, even if it’s just one chicken patty at a time.

here aren’t many places in the world where you can lace up your skates and glide along the ice, palm trees swaying in the Pacific Ocean breeze, and then step off the rink and onto the beach in the middle of winter. Such is the case, however, at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado’s Skating by the Sea beachfront ice rink. Not only are you able to enjoy the sound of waves lapping at the shore but you will likely be swept up in the wintery cheer of it all – twinkling lights, festive music, and hot cocoa to start.

But the Hotel Del isn’t the only place to ice skate this winter. Our beautiful city is home to several special holiday rinks as well as a number of rinks open yearround. Indoor ice rinks offer a variety of fun activities all year long, including public skating sessions, figure skating lessons, ice hockey leagues, broomball, ice polo, curling, and more. Some, like Escondido’s IcePlex, even have special winter-themed events to help get you in the holiday mood.

While year-round rinks let you bundle up in thick socks and scarves even in the middle of July, San Diego’s holiday rinks are nothing short of magical.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO GET TITLE BACK IF YOU LOST IT ON A FORGED DEED?

I

magine waking up one morning and being told by your real estate agent that you no longer own your home. Astonished, you ask, “How is that possible? I didn’t sign any deeds!”

What happened was that a deed transferring your home to a stranger was recorded without your knowledge. Someone has forged your signature on a deed. One can only imagine what it feels like if it happens to you: Scared? Paranoid? Angry? Worried? The feelings are mixed, I’m sure.

There’s not even title insurance that can protect you from an incident like this. To get title back, you can hire a real estate attorney to file what is called a quiet title action. That is simply a lawsuit to get back title. But, of course, that is a very expensive option for an average person.

It used to be that that was the only option.

But fortunately, the law changed in 2015. Now you can get title back through the criminal court. But before you feel a sense of relief, you should know that for this process to work,

the DA would have to catch the person who forged your deed. Usually that is logically possible because who else except the grantee has the incentive to forge your deed? Just file a complaint with the real estate fraud and the DA will take it from there.

After the criminal has been convicted, the new law gives the prosecutor the ability to file a motion on your behalf to have the documents declared null and void. Traveling, walking half-marathons, volunteering with her husband for Worldwide Marriage Encounter and serving as a Comptroller for the Department of Defense keeps Lorrie a busy lady. But when the sudden loss of both her mentor and her sister to cancer within a few months of each other rocked her world, emotional eating resulted, and Lorrie turned to Koko to get back on track.
