ennifer Chen is not only a proud Rancho Peñasquitos resident and recent Westview High School graduate but also an accomplished violinist who happily shares her love for music with others. “When I was a freshman, I founded the Music Outreach Club. We began the Music Mentoring program at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library, as well as the Music Buddies program

She and the other Music Outreach Club members have also hosted many concerts to showcase the students they have mentored and to raise money for charitable causes. Over the years, Jennifer has earned many accolades for her musical talent. She received first place at the American

Protégé International Concerto Competition and led orchestras as the Assistant Concertmaster of the Civic Youth Orchestra and CoConcertmaster of the Idyllwild Arts Chamberfest Orchestra. According to Jennifer, her father drove her to Los Angeles every weekend for many years to study with professors at USC and UCLA. “He put so much dedication into helping me study with the best teachers. I now teach violin, and teaching and imbuing a love of music in my students is one of my most rewarding activities,” revealed Jennifer. When Jennifer is not playing violin, she can often be found programming, working on her computer, reading, or experimenting with new cooking recipes. “I love cooking! It all started when I’d help my mom cook lunch and dinner. I especially like making new foods that I’ve never made before – trying out foods of different cuisines or complicated desserts is always fun,” said Jennifer. During her time at Westview, Jennifer was also a member of the Speech & Debate club and JV tennis. The future is extremely bright for this talented young woman. In addition to attending Columbia University as a computer science major, Jennifer is continuing her music studies by taking lessons at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. She also participates in Columbia’s orchestra and various chamber groups throughout New York City. Jennifer hopes to unite her love for computer science and technology with her passion for music. “By developing computer programs that incorporate music and delving into the science of music, I hope to educate others on how music and science interact,” Jennifer shared. Wherever her career path takes her, Jennifer will surely share her talents and spread the joy of music with whomever she meets along the way. 

ver 600 people attended a summer movie in the park and pre-movie fundraiser to benefit Sienna’s PlayGarden Project. Families arrived at 92129’s Rolling Hills Neighborhood Park for food, music, face painting, games, and more before viewing Kung Fu Panda 3. Sienna’s PlayGarden is a playground renovation project which operates in honor of Sienna Marie Palkovic, who passed away unexpectedly in 2012. In partnership with the City of San Diego, the Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation Council, the community, family, and friends, the project aims to revitalize Sienna’s favorite neighborhood playground. All proceeds from the fundraiser will help fund the new play equipment at Rolling Hills Park. 

Rancho Peñasquitos Contributes to the Johnson Family's Positive Outlook

he Johnson Family has a family motto of “The 6 Fs,” trying every day to include as many of these elements as possible: faith, food, family, fun, fitness, and friends. Parents Sandy and Jeff Johnson, along with daughters Taylor and Casey, have practiced these ideals in PQ for the past 14 years. Sandy is an elementary school teacher in the Del Mar Union School District, while Jeff is a Waterfront Director and Regatta Manager for the San Diego Yacht Club. The couple met on a blind date in 1994, introduced by another Yacht Club member, and have been extensively involved in community events ever since. On the volunteer front, Jeff won the PUSD Volunteer of the Year award in 2015. His varied work schedule allowed him to spend eight years volunteering at Park Village Elementary, working many hours per week for teachers and administrative staff, on School Site Council and SSC District Rep, and restoring and maintaining two large, dilapidated shade structures on campus. He even got to meet up with his daughters every Monday morning for ‘Marquee Monday,’ updating the school marquee. Church, and both girls volunteer for the summer food program there. Taylor rides and volunteers at Miller Equestrian Summer Camp in Escondido, and completed her Silver Award for Girl Scouts. Casey loves animals and has volunteered for organizations like Labrador and Friends Rescue. She is just beginning her Silver Award project. The girls cook two meals a week and have chopped and baked since they were small. Jeff rode with them both in Ride Across California in their fifth grade year, and just completed his first Half Ironman triathlon in May. Sandy was heavily involved in her teacher association for over 15 years. Some ways the Johnsons incorporate the “fun” part of their motto include road trips to national parks (Sandy reminded readers that everyone should visit th our national parks: “Their 100th Anniversary was in August!”). More fun: “Smash Cake” summer parties – a tradition begun when six and eight-year-old Taylor and Casey saw a video of their one-year-old selves in the tried-and-true interactive demolition of the birthday cake. Fantastic family adventures await the Johnson family in PQ! One more thing: “Katy (the Johnson’s dog) apologizes for barking at neighbors walking by,” Sandy shared. “She’s just doing her job protecting her forever home.” 

Cheesy Sauce: 1 cup peeled and cubed white potato ½ cup peeled and cubed carrot ¼ cup sunflower oil or other neutral oil ¼ cup nut milk 2 teaspoons lemon juice 6 pickled banana pepper slices 3 tablespoons pickling liquid from peppers 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 ½ teaspoons tapioca flour 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspon onion powder 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast ½ teaspoon salt Toppings: 1 can black beans 1 can sliced black olives 2 tomatoes, diced Red onion, diced Avocado, diced Cilantro, for serving Lime juice

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Using a mandoline, on the thinnest setting, slice all the sweet potatoes into even rounds. This may be done using a knife, slicing as thinly and evenly as possible. Toss with olive oil (enough to coat lightly) and salt. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread potato slices in one layer, avoiding too much overlap. Bake for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. This may need to be done in batches, depending on how much you are making. Remove from oven and let sit for 10 minutes. While potatoes are baking, start the cheesy sauce. Boil the cubed potatoes and carrots for about 10 minutes; do not overcook. Drain and add to highspeed blender along with all other sauce ingredients. Blend until completely smooth. Set aside. Assemble cooled sweet potato chips on a plate, drizzle (or drench) with cheesy sauce, and pile on desired toppings. Enjoy!

Crystal Apple Awards LOCAL TEACHERS HONORED BY STUDENTS

ight teachers from four high schools in Rancho Peñasquitos, Mira Mesa, and Scripps Ranch received special Crystal Apple awards. Each spring for the last 12 years, students in these communities have honored excellence in education by nominating outstanding teachers for receipt of the award. The awards symbolize that this often thankless profession does not go unnoticed. Teachers agree the recognition is particularly sweet because it comes from the students themselves. Teachers honored this year were Mike Hymes and Daniel Lutgen from Westview, Aaron Jaffe and Madame Vivona from Mt. Carmel, Brian Keiser and Nancy Moyer from Scripps Ranch, and Daniel Kriley and Daniel Leven from Mira Mesa. The event was hosted by the Peñaquitos Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter-day Saints, with around 200 friends and family members in attendance. One student from each of the teachers’ classrooms presented a short speech about their honoree, citing reasons for nomination. The ceremony also included certificates of recognition from City Councilmembers Mark Kersey and Chris Cate. Westview Principal Todd Cassen said of the annual awards, “It is truly one of my favorite events of the year. To see the students from our community stand up and recognize their teachers for the difference they have made in their lives is something I know our staff members will never forget.” 

SCOUT’S HONOR This Dedicated Volunteer Inspires the Members of Boy Scout Troop 667 by JENNIFER FRAKES | photo by Zeena Gregg Photography

ne year ago, John Marsden fulfilled a lifelong dream when he became Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 667. “I am an Eagle Scout and had been out of scouting for 30 years. I always wanted to get back involved, and now I have the time to do that. I love being a Scoutmaster and being involved in scouting. I am just grateful that I have the time and money to give back. Life is all about giving back,” shared John. While he enjoys all aspects of his role as Scoutmaster, it is his mentorship duties that he finds most rewarding. Sponsored by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Troop 667 was established in 1988 and is a part of the Black Mountain District and the San Diego Imperial Council. The troop is open to boys between 11 and 18 years of age, and no church affiliation is required. The 25 scouts who make up Troop 667 are truly leaders within the organization as they decide which activities, trips, and service projects they will participate in each month. According to John, the troop holds fundraisers throughout the year and is always looking for volunteers to help with camping trips and other activities. He encourages all those interested in volunteering with Troop 667 to visit www.troop667.info. John also hopes that Rancho Peñasquitos residents take a moment to think about how they can help the local community if they are not already doing so. “We have an obligation to raise good young men and women. It really does take a village,” stated John. When John is not volunteering for Troop 667, he enjoys hiking at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, playing various sports, and backpacking. John, a health and safety training professional and Jacqueline, his wife of 25 years, have lived in Park Village since 1995. Of their love for PQ, John explained, “We love the central location, the peaceful community, the mild climate, and the evening breeze from the ocean up the canyon." 

AAUW Event Provides Scholarships for Local Girls

DKG Society Gives Back

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos branch held its 19th Annual Cover to Cover luncheon to raise scholarship funds for local girls attending Tech Trek, as well as re-entry scholarships for women returning to school as nontraditional students. San Diego authors Tammy Greenwood, Abigail Padgett, and Marivi Soliven spoke at the event about their novels, the writing process, and experiences that have influenced their works. Tammy’s book Two Rivers was named Best General Fiction at the San Diego Book Awards in 2009. She teaches creative writing at San Diego Writers, Ink (SDWI), Grossmont College, and online for The Writer’s Center. Abigail Padgett’s Child of Silence is an award-winning Bo Bradley mystery. Abigail is the author of seven highly acclaimed mysteries which have been translated into five languages. The Mango Bride is Marivi Soliven’s first novel. The Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Society’s Eta Chi Chapter of California presented a $650 grant to Allison Basehore of Rolling Hills Elementary for her “Book Club with a Different Point of View.” The grant is provided though DKG California’s Learning is for Everyone (LIFE) Foundation, a nonprofit that seeks to promote and support special projects related to learning and literacy within California. The award will assist the book club in its mission to provide contemporary youth literature featuring a main character with a learning, physical, or emotional disability. DKG Society International is a professional honor society for key women educators, promoting professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. Cyber Innovation Challenge Winners

10th Annual PQ-NE Picnic The PQ-NE Action Group held its 10th Annual Neighborhood Picnic at Rolling Hills Park. Picnic attendees enjoyed lots of family-friendly fun, including a BBQ lunch, bounce houses, a photo booth, volleyball, face painting, a water balloon toss, and the opportunity to meet and socialize with other community members. Fire Station 40 even joined in and helped fill the dunk tank this year. Over $3,000 in raffle and silent auction items from generous local sponsors were given away as well. The PQ-NE Action Group is a public benefit nonprofit organization that is committed to promoting and preserving a safe and livable environment for the residents of The Glens and The Villages, located within Rancho Peñasquitos. The organization works to accomplish this goal by educating residents on traffic and safety issues that impact the community and organizing community members to address these issues as they arise. Local Girls at Tech Trek Six eighth grade girls from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) PowayPeñasquitos branch attended the California Tech Trek Science and Math Camp for Girls at UCSD in June. Amanda Tsai (Mesa Verde), Sophia Righthouse (Mesa Verde), Raina Mesina (Black Mountain), Sophia Azab (Black Mountain), Parmis Kimiaghalam (Meadowbrook), and Alexis Ramirez (Meadowbrook) lived on the UCSD campus for a week, where they attended classes and participated in hands-on activities and experiments. AAUW Tech Trek camps exist to help develop interest and excitement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields as well as improve self-confidence in eighth grade girls. Tech Trek also seeks to expose girls to careers available to women in science today and help them visualize college as part of their future. A team from Westview High School recently performed well in the inaugural California Cyber Innovation Challenge (CCIC) at Sacramento City College. Eight high school teams from around the state competed in a series of timed challenges that included defending the integrity of computer networks and cracking complex codes. There were two different technical challenges that day: the CyberPatriot competition, in which teams needed to identify and correct vulnerabilities in operating system images, and Facebook “Capture the Flag,” where teams completed challenges related to a variety of cybersecurity topics, including forensics, web application security, cryptography, and binary exploitation. Westview won third place in the CyberPatriot competition, second place in the Facebook competition, and second place overall. Westview’s team – who refer to themselves as “The Masters” – included: Ronak Shah, Nir Levin, Dominic Simone, Robby Zaheer, Justin Li, David Mao, Eric Zhang, and Tammy Neuhaus as the team advisor.

Helping Park Village Elementary Local Boy Scout Sarthak Madan completed a service project at Park Village Elementary School as part of earning his Eagle rank. Sarthak learned that students were running down a particular hill at school and getting hurt, so he decided to build a fence that would block off the 63-foot area to ensure that students were safe. Sarthak received a $250 grant from the Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council and he also held a Dudley’s fundraiser. Once the needed materials were purchased, Sarthak led a group of Boy Scout volunteers to build the fence. Some group members dug holes while others took measurements and set the fence posts and rails. “Completing the Eagle Project for me was more than just to earn the Eagle rank,” he said. “It has allowed me to give back to the community and live by the principles scouting has instilled in me over the past seven years.”

Westview Names New Football Coach Kyle Williams has been named the new head football coach at Westview High School. Kyle was previously the head coach at Fallbrook High School, where he is known for turning around their struggling football program and leading them to back-to-back victories in the Valley League Championships. He is also a Poway High School graduate, where he was the defensive coordinator for four seasons, coaching in two Division 1 CIF Championship games, winning one of them. “It has always been a dream of mine to return to the Poway Unified School District as a teacher and a coach,” he said. “Westview High School offers an opportunity for me to work in an environment of competitive excellence, both on the field and in the classroom.” He will take over for Mike Woodward, who stepped down after nine seasons. Youth Community Service Awards The Rancho Peñasquitos Town Council (RPTC) has awarded its annual Youth Community Service Awards to one outstanding student from each school in Peñasquitos for their volunteer efforts throughout the past year that have benefited their school or community. Elementary school recipients included: Chelsea Laubauch (Adobe Bluffs), Bella Malabanan (Canyon View), Isabelle Sparks (Los Peñasquitos), JJ Siu (Park Village), Kaitlyn Lund (Rolling Hills), Emma Contreras (Sundance), and McKenna Fischer (Sunset Hills). Middle school recipients were Jacklyn Melahn (Black Mountain) and Kasey Harvey (Mesa Verde). Justin Hussion (Westview) was a high school recipient. Award winners were recognized by an elected public official during a ceremony at the Fiesta de los Peñasquitos earlier this year. RPTC board members also attended almost every school’s end-ofthe-year award ceremonies to present the award and scholarship money to the students directly.

Local Author Releases Book Rancho Peñasquitos resident Nina Shantel just released her new book, The High-Five Diet. Nina is a health blogger who shares diet tips, fitness advice, and healthy recipes on her website and social media. She has taught boot camps and cardio classes as well as a free beginner’s running group as a way to help her neighbors in Peñasquitos get in shape. Nina graduated from San Diego State University and holds a Fitness Nutrition certification from the American Council on Exercise. Her book is a nutritional guide which focuses on limiting dairy and high-fat and low-nutrient foods, along with specific food combinations and timing. Nina’s own unique health issues propelled her to learn about nutrition more in-depth, discovering that the media often provides false information. “It became my passion to expose the truth,” she said, “while giving accurate information so that people can lose unwanted pounds and live healthier lives.” Learn more at www.thehighfivediet.com.

MCHS Graduate Screens Documentary Mt. Carmel High School graduate Melanie Capacia Johnson and San Marcos resident Sara Vladic will screen their documentary film USS Indianapolis: The Legacy at the GI Film Festival San Diego to be held from Sept. 14 to 18. When Sara was 13, she heard about the tragedy of the USS Indianapolis, a U.S. Navy ship that was struck by two torpedoes in WWII. Of the 1,196 men aboard, about 900 made it into the water, where they faced exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks. By the time help arrived almost five days later, only 317 survived. Sara contacted a survivors’ group and began conducting interviews in 2005. Sara and Melanie grew very close to the survivors over time and decided to use the interview footage they collected over the last 10 years to allow the survivors to tell their story in their own words. The Poway Unified School District has announced its distinguished 2016 Volunteers of the Year: Garry Burgess (Black Mountain Middle School), Stan Kim (Painted Rock Elementary School), and Audrey Frank (Rancho Bernardo High School). Garry Burgess has served as the president of Black Mountain Middle School’s (BMMS) Foundation for the past two and a half years, at one point even balancing a concurrent role as the president of Sunset Hill’s Foundation. Under Garry’s leadership, the foundation has helped fund various programs on campus including show choir, the community garden, orchestra, and band. This year the foundation implemented a $10,000 mini-grant program, which helped fund many teaching enhancement items. Beyond his work with the foundation, Garry has helped bring the Hour of Code program to BMMS so that students can learn the basics of programming. he Academy of Dance Arts (ADA) is an enriching familyfriendly dance studio that serves the community of Rancho Peñasquitos and beyond. Their professional and fun-filled facility offers young dancers not only high-quality dance instruction but also unique performance opportunities, invaluable life lessons, and cherished memories. With classes for children starting at three years and up, ADA offers programs in everything from tap to ballet to hip hop – there’s something for everyone!

ADA’s accomplished and award-winning instructors use their extensive experience to provide students with the opportunity to grow as dancers no matter their skill level. “It is the goal of everyone at Academy of Dance Arts to give the best dance experience possible to each and every student in a manner that is always professional, ethical, and moral,” shared owner Donna DeLaney. Dancers can choose from a multitude of programs ranging from dance troupe classes to performing groups to camps and more. And while students are there to sharpen

dance skills, it is not uncommon for them to also walk away with life skills from their time in the classroom and on the stage, such as leadership, goal-setting, accountability, selfdiscipline, and teamwork. “While there is a very professional atmosphere at the studio, it is still fun. We encourage the students to challenge themselves through incentive programs, being student demonstrators to the younger students, and student teaching. The learning is on many levels,” Donna explained. In addition to their general programming, ADA offers students once-in-a-lifetime

experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. ADA’s dancers have the opportunity to perform not only at local community events – such as the La Jolla Christmas Parade – but also across the country, in events such as the Disney World Parade down Main Street USA in Florida. “We will be participating at this incredible event in June 2017. This is open to all ADA students. It is one of the most fun and enriching experiences for the students,” shared Donna. At ADA, students will also get to meet and learn from the Broadway stars of The Lion King, who will visit the studio in October to teach a workshop filled with songs and dances from the musical. Perhaps most importantly, every dancer who walks into ADA’s studio will gain friendships, memories, and self-confidence that will last a lifetime. “The staff often says ‘We are in the business of making memories.’ This is so true,” said Donna. “Through dance, both at the studio and at the many dance performance venues, great memories are created for both the students and the parents.” Ultimately, the ADA family strives to help each student find their own personal success – be that becoming a professional dancer, growing as an individual, or creating lasting memories. 

Carmel Education Foundation (MCEF) President Tom McFadden and Westview Foundation President Stephaine Hudson about how these organizations help bridge the gap between student needs and available funds to enhance the academic and extracurricular experience for all at Rancho Peñasquitos’ high schools.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND THE MT. CARMEL EDUCATION FOUNDATION?

The Mt. Carmel Education Foundation was created in 2010. At the time, our high school was the only one in the PUSD without an education foundation. Our purpose is to help supplement the financial gap between student educational needs and the funds available to meet those needs. Additionally, we are focused on providing students real-world work experiences, an area we call Community Connections. WHAT IS MCEF’S PRIMARY MISSION?

The mission of MCEF is to fundraise for worthy educational projects, enrichment programs, educational initiatives, and extracurricular activities and to create opportunities for students to gain practical work and educational experiences beyond the classroom. HOW DOES MCEF FULFILL THIS MISSION?

Our busiest time of the year is August, September, and October. During this time we are collecting donations, reviewing grant applications submitted by the teachers, and moving quickly to get all funds back into the classroom and working for our kids. Our goal is to have all dollars that we collect in August and September back and benefiting the students before Thanksgiving. With the help of Mt. Carmel’s wonderful administrative staff, we’ve been very successful making this happen.

On the Community Connections side, we have organized and run workshops on interview techniques, resume writing, and financial education. Additionally, we have worked with the school liaison to help find and provide internships for the students. WHAT TYPES OF PROGRAMS DOES YOUR FOUNDATION FUND?

We are very proud that we have been able to provide funds to almost every department in the school. Our goal with funding has always been to get the biggest “bang for our buck.” With every dollar spent, we are trying to positively impact as many students for as long a duration as possible. With that in mind, we have been able to purchase computers, printers, and software for our world language, science, and math departments. We have funded our “world famous” physics boat materials for the last four years. We were able to provide supplies for the very popular sports medicine class at our school. In addition to providing books and periodicals for our library, we’ve also been able to fund library computers and printers for use by those students that may not have access at home. In 2014, we bought a MacBook Pro for our awardwinning school newspaper. We’ve also been able to help our school counselors by funding upgrades and licenses for Naviance, the college application process software used at our school. We’ve even purchased yoga mats and badminton rackets for the P.E. department. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE EDUCATION FOUNDATIONS?

Although the financial picture of our district has improved in recent years, there is still a large gap between school needs and funding available. Foundations play an important role in addressing this gap. In 2010, the first year of our foundation’s existence, we received grant requests totaling over $60,000 – we were able to provide approximately $10,000. We’ve continued to work hard to close this gap, but it is still significant. Another major reason a foundation like ours is so important is the flexibility and speed at which we operate. Even though one of our biggest challenges is recruiting help, one of the advantages of

being a relatively small board is we can make immediate decisions and get funds into our classrooms quickly. We can also be relatively flexible with our spending. If we feel dollars spent on a particular item or project will positively impact our students, we generally don’t have to look any further – we vote on it and write the check. WHAT IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE FOUNDATION?

One of the things I look forward to most about our monthly meetings is our Principal’s Report. Greg Magno has been a member of the Mt. Carmel community for as long as I can remember; first as an assistant principal and now as our principal. One of the biggest benefits of being a member of your kids’ school foundation is the in-person information provided. Greg is passionate about Mt. Carmel and the education of our kids. Having the opportunity to hear and discuss some of the ideas he has about how to make our school better is very exciting. He’s open to any and all suggestions and willing to answer all of our questions. Our foundation meetings are really a great source of information about what is happening on campus and in the classrooms. Perhaps a lot of parents can get this information from their children, but I haven’t found the secret to prying any significant details in this area out of my kids. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS. HOW DO THEY HELP KEEP THE FOUNDATION RUNNING?

Our board is wonderful. We are a pretty small group (we’re trying to change that) so a lot of work falls on only a few shoulders, but they are all willing to step up and put in the time. Steve Swendrowski has taken on the VP of Community Connections role and has already facilitated two financial workshops. He has established

Nels Lundgren joined the foundation about three years ago and has taken on the secretary position. Ruth Loh is our VP of grant proposals. Tracy Middleton is our VP of fundraising. She has looked into several opportunities and is currently working on a 5K Fun Run. The remainder of our board is Raj Iyer, Ketan Shah, Maitrayee Sahi, Mary Jane Barger, and Julie Islitzer. They are all extremely hard-working people and do so much for our kids, both with MCEF and other organizations at school. We have several open board positions that we are actively looking to fill in the near future. DOES MCEF HOLD FUNDRAISERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

Our main fundraiser is a simple donation request at the beginning of the school year. HOW CAN INDIVIDUALS HELP CONTRIBUTE TO MCEF’S MISSION?

Similar to many of the other school foundations in the district, our biggest need is volunteers. We’d love to bring five to 10 new people in this year to help us going forward. Volunteering for our foundation does not mean you walk in with a list of responsibilities. We’re simply

looking for people that are willing to share their ideas and help as much as possible, most often in a peripheral role, with the various tasks necessary to run a successful foundation. Our meetings are usually on the third Wednesday of the month at the school and are open to the public. We’d encourage interested individuals to just come and check us out. WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM AND SHORTTERM GOALS?

Smart growth. We’ll continue to be able to put the money we have back into the school and enhance our kids’ education. We’ll continue to be able to put together real world work experience workshops and seminars. We won’t be able to close the gap we face without help. So, our long-term and short-term goals are the same; steady, productive, and smart growth. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE READERS TO KNOW? FOR

All of my kids went to Sunset Hills Elementary, Black Mountain Middle School, and Mt. Carmel High School. Like a lot of our community’s parents, I wanted to help where I could and I wanted to get more information about what was really going on at my kids’ school. I started in 2001 by joining the Sunset Hills Elementary School Foundation. I’m a CPA, so I tend to naturally jump into the treasurers’ spot. After about six years as treasurer there, I spent another four as the president. The remarkable thing is the benefits of being on that foundation 15 years ago are really the same as the benefits I experience today from being a member of MCEF: the simple pride and rewards associated with helping our students and the wealth of information I can get in just a few meetings a year that include the school principal and other school staff. If anyone is looking for a relatively easy way to get involved that doesn’t come with a significant time commitment, I’d encourage them to look into their school foundation. HOW HAS THE FOUNDATION EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

In the first few years, there were numerous attempts made to run fundraising events for the school such as pancake breakfasts, golf tournaments, dances, etc. These events required an immense amount of work from our volunteer board members, and unfortunately, they often resulted in little financial gain for the foundation. Input from the community led us to realizing that

WESTVIEW STUDENT AMONG SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

estview High School senior Helen Jin is one of 12 recipients of Don Diego scholarships this year. The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation has awarded a total of $40,500 in college scholarships to outstanding students embarking on their studies this fall. Eligibility was open to San Diego County high school seniors who participated in the San Diego County Fair or other activities associated with the Del Mar Fairgrounds. In addition to being a standout student at Westview, earning a 4.4 GPA in a demanding curriculum of AP and honors courses, Helen is an award-winning artist, gifted pianist, clothing designer with a successful sideline business, and a perspicacious young adult who has the ability to see the beauty in science as well as nature. Westview counselor Christine Cudmore said, “This past summer, Helen traveled to China to work with children who lack support from home. She taught the kids English, music, and art, and enjoyed giving them the opportunity to express themselves as she has been able to do in her life.”

Helen won a $2,500 award from the foundation in the Exhibitor category. She is somewhat of a legend at the fair’s Student Showcase, where she exhibited for four years and amassed multiple awards, including Best in Show, Best in Class, Donated Award, and First Place ribbons. Despite a myriad of academic, artistic, and other achievements, Helen remains humble. Addressing the Don Diego Foundation, she said, “I’m so happy and grateful to have been chosen as a scholarship recipient. Your scholarship will be a helpful step in letting me pursue my interdisciplinary interests of business, medicine, and art.” The Don Diego Foundation was named for Don Diego – actor Tom Hernández – who served as the fair’s welcoming goodwill ambassador from 1947 to 1984. LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS POSITIVELY IMPACT THE COMMUNITY

ancho Peñasquitos residents Alexis Gehrke and Michelle Tong have earned Girl Scout Gold Awards for their outstanding leadership and commitment to taking action in their community. The Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; just five percent of Girl Scouts nationwide achieve this distinction. Alexis and Michelle are two of 32 Girl Scouts in San Diego who earned the award this year. Alexis, the captain of her school’s varsity volleyball team, grew up with a passion for sports and wanted to share their positive impact with others. For her Gold Award project, Alexis held softball clinics for children at the Boys & Girls Club of National City. She also collected lightly used equipment for them and trained club employees to continue the program in the future. Michelle worked with senior citizens living in local senior centers for her Gold Award project, providing them with a friendly and encouraging environment to socialize and learn. She taught art history, led drawing activities, and brought in high school volunteers to engage with the residents. Michelle built on the leadership skills she developed as an accomplished flutist in her high school band to take on this creative program of her own. Alexis and Michelle were both members of Troop 8788 and started Girl Scouts as Daisies. They have both earned Bronze Awards, the highest honor available to Girl Scout Juniors, and Silver Awards, the highest honor available to Cadettes. They graduated with the Westview High School class of 2016. GIRL SCOUT USES PERSONAL EXPERIENCES TO HELP OTHERS

ancho Peñasquitos resident Jenna Sylvia recently published a children’s book called Friends On All Ends as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The book aims to promote friendship and bring awareness to the difficult transition military children often face when they move into new neighborhoods. Jenna has been visiting various youth programs to spread her message and donate books, including Sunset Hills Elementary School ESS, Rancho Peñasquitos Branch Library, Mira Mesa Christian School, and Turtleback Elementary School ESS. In addition to being a part of Troop 8316, Jenna has been involved with many other community activities. This year she graduated from Mt. Carmel High School, where she was the president of the Friendship Club, vice president of the California Scholarship Federation, welcoming new student committee chair for Peer Counseling, and a National Honor Society member. She was also a cheerleader for four years and a water safety instructor at the Mt. Carmel pool. She will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall.  48 • 92129MAGAZINE.COM • September | October 2016

estview High School senior Shreya Huilgol earned her Girl Scout Gold Award last year with a project that she continues today. The project, called Step Up 2 Check Up, initiates blood pressure screening in children all over the world and spreads awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure (hypertension) and the importance of early detection. Shreya was diagnosed with hypertension at the age of eight. Fortunately, it was discovered early enough that it could be treated. Shreya has traveled to India three times to continue the work of her hypertension awareness campaign. She has shared her personal experiences and knowledge with thousands of people, conducted awareness workshops in schools, and helped screen students. She also worked with the Rotary Club of Kolhapur to include blood pressure testing as part of its routine health screenings at schools in India, a service that has since spread to other Rotary Clubs in the state. “If even one life is saved,” Shreya said, “it is worth it!” Learn more at www.stepup2checkup.org. 

Smart Choices Enrolling Students in Tutoring Club Improves Performance, Morale, and College Planning by LYDIA COBB | photos by Tyler McElhaney

veryone has the potential to succeed. Sometimes, more guidance is needed along the way. Tutoring Club teaches and tutors students from pre-K to high school seniors with any school subject, ACT/SAT preparation, and college planning. VP of Franchise Sales and Training Liam Powers explained, “Tutoring Club was started to offer students in the surrounding school districts an opportunity to get support in all coursework and subjects, tutoring as needed to achieve higher grades, preparation for future grade levels, and college planning.” Tutoring sessions are individualized based on the students’ needs. “One day might be math and another might be writing,” added Liam, “so we offer services to our students based on the assistance needed at that particular time.” Parents are encouraged to be involved through regular conferences that keep them informed of their child’s progress. It’s a warm and relaxed feeling inside the center – especially when students’

imaginations are sparked and they realize they can be creators of positive outcomes. Most of the tutors are college graduates with degrees in the fields they’re tutoring, though exceptional upper-level college students also tutor certain subjects. “We had a recent student who had received an NCAA scholarship offer, but did not receive a high enough score on her SAT to qualify for the scholarship,” mentioned Liam. They worked together on how she could focus and raise her score. He added, “She ended up getting the score needed and received a full scholarship to the University of Hawaii.” Tutoring Club is about creating personal and scholastic success, and changing lives. The 6 th Annual Terry Spencer Memorial Golf Tournament was a success. The Spencer family, who have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos for over 20 years, lost Terry five years ago to lung cancer. To continue his legacy, they hold the memorial golf tournament every year to bring members of the community together for a good cause. Over 120 golfers came out to The Vineyard at Escondido Golf Course to honor Terry’s memory and raise funds and awareness for the American Lung Association. The top three winning teams at the tournament will continue on to compete in the Randy Jones Invitational in January. 

This isn’t a surprising decline with school starting, but if you’re out there searching for a home to buy you may see this trend continue through the end of the year. Market times have inched upwards but are still selling at a speedy 28 days on average. As I have spoken of in prior writings, be wary of overpricing your home, watching it sit on the market, and reducing the price down the line. It can affect the mindset of buyers and result in lower offers. Homes in good condition that are promoted effectively and priced according to the current market conditions will sell quickly and for the highest amount. July saw homes selling for 98% of the listing price which is very strong, but still something to keep an eye on since they were selling for 99% from March through June. There could be many reasons for

If you’re considering selling your home in this market, I would recommend reaching out to your agent, or myself if you don’t have one, to help you improve your odds of selling in the shortest amount of time and for the highest amount. There are little things that one simply gets used to while living in a home, but a squeaky hinge, drawer that doesn’t operate properly, and dusty baseboards all add up for a potential buyer. Curb appeal is also important as it sets the tone for the entire viewing; from the moment a buyer gets out of the car, your home is being evaluated.
