It’s a Miracle!

or the better part of last year, our two youngest kids (9 and 10 years old) have been asking for pet hamsters. My wife and I had several conversations about it and ultimately decided that we would succumb to the request. After all, isn’t owning and taking care of hamsters part of the magical childhood experience? Isn’t it supposed to teach responsibility – and all of that other stuff that kids need to learn the hard way?

So, a couple of days before Christmas, my wife headed to the pet store and came home with, not one, but two male Roborovski hamsters (the smallest of the dwarf hamsters). I have to admit, the little guys are very cute.

Needless to say, they were the hit of the gift exchange.

Fast Forward 15 Days. My daughter had a friend over for a play date.

All of a sudden, I heard high pitched shrieks and screams (which aren’t that uncommon during these play dates) coming from upstairs followed by the inevitable rumbling of footsteps running down the stairs.

Both girls were screaming at the top of their lungs, “The boy hamster is having babies! How can a boy hamster have babies? Oh my goodness. What should we do? What should we do?”

Chuckling and with a bit of a dismissive attitude, I let them know that this was literally impossible. However, upon further observation, I realized that the impossible had in fact happened. It was a miracle! The “boy” hamster was definitely giving birth – not to one baby, but to a litter of six little hamsters.

The Breaux household went into immediate lockdown. Chaos had officially set in. Once word of the miracle hit the streets, parents and other friends were quickly en route to check out the new little guys. There were even talks of live hamster cams. Life as we know it would clearly not be the same.

As family and friends gathered to see the modern day miracle, I immediately began consulting with Google (knower of all things) to try to figure out how this could have happened. Google responded by letting me know that the gestation period for ‘Robo’ hamsters is about 22 days. This meant that the “boy” hamster was pregnant when we purchased her. This information prompted additional questions. I put more intense pressure on Google to get to the bottom of the mystery. Is the other hamster also a female? If not, should we separate them? Google was a bit indecisive in this area, so we ultimately decided to move the hamster of unknown sex into its own cage the next day, especially once we realized that the mother had already exiled it into a distant corner of the cage. It seemed like the right thing to do.

Fast Forward 21 Days. Since Google had instructed us not to mess with the baby hamsters, we merely observed for several weeks while contacting friends who might be interested in adopting some of the critters.

The hamster cam idea had also been overridden because we couldn’t quite figure out how to make it work (code phrase for “I was lazy”). The baby hamsters were now weaned from the mother and running around. They were as cute as you can imagine. Control of the Breaux household had now been regained.

Fast Forward One More Day. I received an unexpected text message from my wife, “Our boy hamster (I can’t repeat all of her words) just had SIX MORE BABIES!” I realized we had officially lost control once again – in fact, it seems we were never in control after all. Talks of hamster cams resumed.

Visitors stopping by to see the new miracle babies stepped up to an all-time high. We did Facebook posts. We hit the phones. Desperate emails were sent out. We needed more people to adopt more hamsters!

At the end of all of the excitement, there are two things that I am now certain of. For starters, the mother hamster is officially not a boy. Additionally, the other original hamster is definitely not a girl. Other than that, all I can do is enjoy the chaos and laugh.

T

his seven-year-old second grader at Stone Ranch Elementary may have relocated from the Netherlands to 4S Ranch when he was just five years old, but Dominic Bozanic still has vivid memories from his native country. Dominic shared, “I remember the canals, the swans, the small boats, and riding my bicycle in the beautiful forest.”

of mud, but it wasn’t a total catastrophe, as Dominic explained, “When the mud settled and dried, it created a hill. I enjoyed running up and down on it, because there weren’t many hills in the Netherlands.”

Dominic still enjoys being active, especially when it involves wrestling.

He wrestles with Team Puma Wrestling (they practice at Cathedral Catholic High School), and in 2014 Dominic had two major wins. He came in first place in his age bracket at the USA Wrestling Tour of America Tournament in Spokane, WA, and he placed first in the California State Games in Wrestling, which took place at Qualcomm Stadium.

Now Dominic is in the top ten in the country for his weight class and age group, according to the USA Wrestling 2014-2015 Rankings.

Despite these accolades, Dominic humbly revealed, “I am far from being ‘the best,’ and I still have much work to do to achieve my goals.

Each year it gets more challenging… and more rewarding!”

Many of the skills Dominic developed while training for wrestling have also helped him with his academic learning. Dominic said, “When I lose in wrestling it is because I did not prepare well. It is very similar to school. If I do poorly on a test it is my fault. Also, if I do well on a test or in a wrestling match it is because of my preparation. Wrestling is a good preparation for life.”

When he isn’t wrestling Dominic plays baseball, basketball, and football. He also loves his iPad games, “Madden Mobile is one of my favorites!” Dominic revealed. At school Dominic earns good grades and he is especially fond of science. He elaborated, “Science makes me think more about the environment and what’s happening around us in nature.”

Discussing the possible reasons for his great successes thus far, Dominic wisely said, “Self-confidence and sportsmanship go a long way!” ¢

New Leadership in RBBA RANCHO BERNARDO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION ELECTS SCOTT LAWN AS NEW PRESIDENT

T

he Rancho Bernardo Business Association (RBBA) recently welcomed Scott Lawn as the organization’s newly elected president.

Scott has served as vice president of the RBBA for the past year and is a former honorary mayor of Rancho Bernardo. Scott also currently serves as vice president of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation and has previously been chairman of the Rancho Bernardo Thanksgiving Luncheon.

He received unanimous endorsement from the RBBA board of directors.

RBBA Secretary Bill Chaffin was elected the new vice president, and Debbie Kurth will retain her position as treasurer.

Previous President Marty Judge announced he was stepping down to devote more time to political campaigns. “I am delighted that Scott will be leading the RBBA,” said Marty. “Scott has been at the forefront of nearly every activity we have been engaged

in since he joined us in 2007, so he is ideally positioned to lead us.” Marty is a founding member of the RBBA and will continue to serve as secretary.

Scott shared, “The RBBA has grown from 63 members nine years ago to more than 300 this year. We plan to continue this growth pattern and to continue to help our members build their businesses. The result will be a stronger community and greater prosperity for it.”

The RBBA provides a variety of networking, growth, and service opportunities for its company and individual members throughout the year, including monthly receptions, networking breakfasts, and its Lunch and Learn seminars. INNOVATIVE PRODUCER Accomplished TV/Film Producer and Devoted Dad Treasures his Life

D

espite challenges, Scott Manville achieved success and remains positive. He moved to Los Angeles to attend the Lee Strasberg Institute where he discovered his “love for writing” and “became a struggling screenwriter,” even losing his apartment and living in a pool shed. “Those were the toughest years,” he reminisced, “but every failure brought a new opportunity.” He obtained a job with Merv Griffin Entertainment as a runner, which evolved to assistant to assistants, then to reader for producers, then to receiving an actual desk after “cooking up a few projects that made it to the network.” He learned to write pitches, think, and juggle multiple projects, often up to 50 at once. Working with six in-house producers, he also learned how producers operated and how to develop projects. He used this knowledge to launch The Television Writer’s Vault, a website that enables producers to scout concepts to develop shows. His website became the industry’s online marketplace and is used by top tier producers. Scott explained, “We’ve had shows discovered and aired globally on Lifetime TV, Discovery Channel, A&E, Syfy, and others.” More recently he finished a TV series, is in negotiations for adapting a story for a feature film, and is partnering with a company to develop the next-level marketplace for the industry.

Scott values the people he has worked with and the knowledge he has accumulated, and he would love to help others succeed too. For those wishing to pursue his career, he advises finding stories and subjects that are entertaining and introduce new worlds. Choosing not to raise a family in LA, he discovered San Diego with his wife. Now a single father of twin four-year-olds, he cherishes his children and appreciates 4S Ranch for its amenities and family-focused activities. “We’ve been through a lot this past year and have come out the other side even closer with a very full and fun life together,” he shared. “Being their dad is a blessing, and I’m fortunate to have the flexibility in my professional life to focus my time and care for them.”

errapin students and families moved and grooved at Turtleback Elementary School’s 6th Annual Family Valentine’s Dance. The school’s multipurpose room was bedecked with red streamers and hearts, Valentines decorated by students, and a big blank poster that students filled up throughout the night with drawings and messages. The DJ kept the beat going and teachers led the crowd in upbeat dances. Local high school students volunteered to serve refreshments and help the younger students have a fantastic dance night. Whenever participants needed a break from the lively dancefloor, there were crafts to make, pizza slices to munch, and plenty of cookies and brownies to nibble on. And with stickers, ribbons, and pink construction paper galore, everyone had a chance to make Valentines for their special someones. 

Ancient Arts

SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS CREATE THEIR OWN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN MUSEUM

O

ak Valley Middle School (OVMS) students had a blast hosting their first annual Night at the Museum, an artistic and academic showcase wrapping up the sixth grade unit on Ancient Egypt.

“Our language arts and social studies teachers do a great deal of collaboration, and when the unit began I brought up the idea of the museum as a way to culminate everything,” explained Kristen Abboud, a sixth grade teacher at OVMS. “I think it’s exciting to see our students demonstrate their knowledge through artistic design in addition to the rigorous academic work they complete in the classroom.”

The students learned about the Ancient Egyptians’ achievements in art, architecture, mathematics, and science. Classes created journals of Ancient Egyptian daily life, designed jewelry, and made travel brochures. Other classes recreated ancient artifacts for the showcase.

“The variety of work that came in was incredible!” said Kristen. All of the approximately 400 sixth graders at OVMS participated. Pieces included life-sized sarcophagi, 3D pyramids, hand-crafted canopic jars, a papiermâché bust of Nefertiti, interactive shadufs, paper made from papyrus, hand-sewn clothing, and mummies. Students created detailed museum placards explaining their artifacts. “The Egyptian Museum made me research deeper into Egyptian history so I learned much more than I thought I would,” reported Carter Hunt, one of the students participating.

Teachers and students transformed the library into a museum with plenty of help from Librarian Jane Chamber. The museum was open to

the entire community for two nights. Sixth Grader Chloe Ryan shared, “It was a long project and we worked hard. But it all paid off when our masterpieces were placed in the museum for everyone to see.” 

IMAGINATIVE PIONEERS THE TAMALUNAS FAMILY ACHIEVES A LOT

T

he Tamalunas family, consisting of parents John and India and daughters Amelia, 9, and Clara, 6, has lived in 92127’s Westwood community for 12 years now. India admitted, “We moved here to be in the Poway Unified School District, and we like the family atmosphere in our neighborhood.”

The daughters attend Westwood Elementary and are involved in the school’s Sparks First Lego League Team.

Describing the First Lego League, John revealed, “It teaches children about science and technology, primarily in regards to computer programming and robotics, using programmable Lego Mindstorm robot sets. The children work together to develop robots, complete challenges, and participate in tournaments.”

To help Amelia and Clara fully embrace not only their scientific and technological savvy but also their creativity, the Tamalunas allocated a main room in their house as a tinkering workshop. John elaborated, “Our living room is dedicated to Legos! There is a 3’ x 5’ board I made to sit on the ottoman with a Lego City constructed on it. The girls spend endless hours playing together and using their vibrant imaginations, and I can’t imagine it any other way.”

Both parents don’t believe in limiting their daughters when it comes to what they’re capable of achieving, and the girls were even named after famous women known for overcoming social constrains on their gender. India explained, “Our daughters are named after pioneering women in American history: Amelia Earhart and Clara Barton.” The girls have already achieved a lot – Amelia is a Girl Scout who excels in basketball, guitar, and soccer, and Clara plays soccer and the piano.

The parents first met each other when both were employed at a pharmaceutical company. Now John is the manufacturing director of another pharmaceutical company, and India is the office manager at a CPA firm. There was a period about three years ago, however, when John was inbetween jobs and on a soul-searching mission.

John recalled, “I was looking to do something productive and worthwhile as I looked for new employment, so I started volunteering at Feeding America. I helped prepare and sort the donated food items.” His daughters also wanted to join him, and to this day both girls are still active volunteers with Feeding America. India added, “We enjoy helping others in our community that truly need the assistance.” The Tamalunas clan is accomplished, altruistic, and tinkering their way towards a fantastic future. ¢

ocal residents of all ages gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a carnival hosted by the San Diego Chinese Cultural Association (SDCCA) and North County Chinese School on the Oak Valley Middle School campus.

The annual carnival was free to the public and allowed the whole community to welcome in the Year of the Sheep. Traditional Chinese musical performances and folk dances entertained the crowds, along with martial art demonstrations. Participants loved the brightly colored dragon and lion dances, with dancers maneuvering elaborate puppets and costumes. Children got to catch goldfish to take home, toss bean bags, and play other carnival games, while their parents browsed the silent auction. cups rolled oats cup ground flaxseed cup chia powder cup wide-slice coconut cup raisins cup sliced almonds cup almond flour cup sunflower seeds tablespoon sea salt teaspoons cinnamon easpoon vanilla extract cup pureed dates (approx. 8 dates, seeds removed) cup unsweetened applesauce cup water tablespoons honey

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Add vanilla extract, dates (with pits removed), applesauce, honey, and water into the blender, food processor, or Vitamix until well blended.

4. Pour over granola. Mix together with hands or spoon until granola is coated.

5. Spread in a thin layer on foil-lined baking sheets and bake for approximately 1 hour, turning halfway through.

How to Serve: Our two-year-old loves to eat it plain as a snack, and my husband likes to add pecans (for a little crunch), some almond milk, heat until warm, and then add blueberries. You can experiment and add different nuts or mix with yogurt.

My husband was grocery shopping in a hurry and picked up a box of granola that sounded healthy: “Organic, non-GMO, excellent source of Omega 3’s, flax seed, pumpkin seeds.” However, when we read the ingredients and nutrition label at home, it showed the granola was full of refined sugar: 10 grams per ¾ cup. By comparison this “healthy” storebought granola had more sugar per serving than the common sugar-filled kid’s cereal! As a result I set out to create a healthy, no sugar-added snack and cereal alternative.

About the Chef: I am a registered dental hygienist and have become increasingly interested in family nutrition through my journey as a mom. I’ve been surprised by how many foods geared towards children are packed with refined sugar. I started a blog, Fresh Eats Happy Teeth (www.fresheatshappyteeth.com), where I share recipes with a focus on whole food meal and snack ideas that keep teeth and the entire body healthy. Wonder Woman Devoted Wife, Dedicated Mother, and Passionate Philanthropist, Erin Leventhal Can Really Do It All

en years ago, Erin Leventhal had just moved back to San Diego from Washington, D.C. Upon her return, Erin found that while she was gone most of her UCSD friends had moved away. “I wanted to meet fun, community-minded women and serve my community at the same time,” recalled Erin. And so she joined the Junior League of San Diego, an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. “During my time in the Junior League, I have transitioned from a newlywed to a first-time mom and am now proud to serve as the president of the Junior League of San Diego!” exclaimed Erin. “The last decade in the organization has brought me some of my closest friends, biggest opportunities, and most precious memories.”

The Junior League of San Diego has a unique mission of improving the lives of transition-age foster youth while also teaching women to be leaders in the community. “Over the course of our 85-year history, the Junior League has delivered tens of thousands of trained women volunteers into San Diego’s nonprofit community,” noted Erin.

As president of the organization, Erin is excited about this year’s events. “In April, the Junior League is launching its first-ever Solutions Summit, which will bring social workers, legislators, nonprofit agencies and other stakeholders together to collaborate on action-ready solutions to critical issues San Diego’s transition-age youth face,” explained Erin. The group’s 2015 fundraiser will be the Junior League of San Diego Food & Wine Festival, complete with a Kentucky Derby theme, set to take place on May 2 at La Jolla Cove. “This event is for anyone who loves food and wine – or even just a beautiful day overlooking the water!” stated Erin.

Apart from logging in long hours as a dedicated volunteer, Erin is also a devoted wife to her husband, Joe, and full-time mother to her three children, Gracie (7), Laurel (5), and Jake (3). “Between my three small children, my full-time volunteer work, and helping with my husband’s law firm, Leventhal Law, I don’t have much time for hobbies!” joked Erin. “Our schedules make the time we do get to spend relaxing with friends and family – which usually includes great food and wine – even more special.” ¢ For more information on how to become a member of Junior League of San Diego visit www.jlsd.org.

Girl Scout Cookie Season Wraps Up

Neighborhood Girl Scouts are wrapping up the cookie season and gearing up to invest their earnings.

Troops earn funds for activities and community projects, while the council’s proceeds finance events, volunteer training, facilities, and financial aid for more than 42,000 local girl and adult members.

This year’s cookie entrepreneurs included 4S Ranch resident Payton, who joined other Girl Scouts and San Diego City Council President Sherri Lightner for a Cookie College event, where Lightner purchased the first box of Girl Scout cookies. By participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls like Payton develop leadership skills while learning about goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. On March 28 the Del Sur Educational Foundation’s (DSEF) Annual Night at the Ranch will bring supporters along on a trip to balmy seas and beautiful islands – without leaving Rancho Bernardo.

Maddie, a fellow scout, explained, “We have been making videos and flyers, and working hard designing the library.” “I was really surprised that not every school has a library, and that is why we wanted to do this project,” added Ariana. Abby summed up everyone’s feelings: “I am happy that we are going to make a bunch of kids happy. This is something I have never done before and it feels good to help other people.”

Thank You Award For OVMS Teacher

Candice Dorn, a seventh grade teacher at Oak Valley Middle School, was recently presented with a thank-you award by KYXY Radio and American Assets Trust. She shared that the presentation took her by surprise while she was teaching her students how to calculate their GPA. When Principal Casey Currigan entered, she thought it was a routine visit – until the rest of the administration and visitors flooded the room! “The radio host, Little Tommy, introduced himself to my class and me, telling me I was getting an award,” she said. “I had no idea that I had even been nominated and was beyond honored.” Candice was nominated by the Sowvlen family, who she knows through her AVID class. They presented her with the flowers, plaque, and $100 gift card. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to work in a beautiful community with such amazingly generous and supportive families,” expressed Candice. “It is my great pleasure to serve them and their children.”

Science and Engineering Festival

roncos and Nighthawks recently put aside their rivalry for a day of fun and friendship at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The Rancho Bernardo High School (RBHS) and Del Norte High School (DNHS) boys basketball teams hosted a collaborative field meet for members of both schools’ Best Buddies programs. The day started with food and socializing before the games began, followed with the awards presentation. “The best part of this is that it was all the idea of the DNHS and RBHS basketball coaches!” shared Jennifer Conlon, Resource Specialist and Department Chair at DNHS. “They’re hoping to break down the ‘rivalry’ wall between the two schools by using the awesome kids involved in Best Buddies!”

When was the North San Diego Business Chamber (NSDBC) founded? What is the history behind the chamber?

It was founded in 1980 as the Rancho Bernardo Chamber, then became the San Diego North Chamber in 2005 when it merged with Diamond Gateway. In 2014 it became the North San Diego Business Chamber with a new name and brand.

What services does the NSDBC provide to members and the community?

We are a business organization that provides strong networking opportunities for our members, a voice on committees that serve the business communities, advocacy for many industries, professional development workshops, and events that are designed for all members.

Is the chamber affiliated with a larger umbrella organization?

We’re not affiliated with another organization but we are U.S. Chamber of Commerce accredited. We’re the only accredited chamber in San Diego County and one of 13 in the State of California.

How did you personally become involved with the NSDBC? I was recruited in March 2009 to come to the chamber and turn it around.

What is the chamber’s mission, and how do you and the chamber go about fulfilling that mission?

Our mission is “Building Vibrant Communities Through Stronger Commerce.” Everything that we do has to be aligned with the mission and if it is not, we do not do it. Our focus is strong commerce and strong communities.

What communities does the NSDBC serve?

What are the most rewarding aspects of working with those communities?

Our footprint is north of Interstate 8 up to Interstate 78 and from inland to coast. The diversity of the region we serve is fascinating as it covers all business sizes and industries.

What is your current role within the organization? What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging?

I’m the president and CEO. The most rewarding part is my ability to work with businesses, make a difference in the community, and see the results of our team’s hard work. The most challenging part is helping our small business owners navigate through red tape and try to do business in a challenging environment.

Can you tell us a bit about the other officers? What are their backgrounds?

Our board of directors is a diverse group of executive professionals that represent the membership. The diversity of the board is based on company size, industry, geographic location, gender, and ethnicity.

It’s important to always keep in mind that the board represents the membership and it must stay as diverse as the membership is to stay relevant.

How has the chamber grown and changed over the years?

The chamber has grown exponentially in the past six years. Our philosophy is “to grow we must stay relevant,” and we reevaluate our programs and benefits each year to keep the chamber relevant to our members.

What are the primary goals of the NSDBC? Our three-year strategic plan includes the following goals: strengthen membership, retain membership, and grow commerce.

What have been some of the organization’s most memorable events over the years?

San Diego Women’s Week has been our signature event and each year it gets bigger and better. Some of the other significant events are: State of the Region, Leaders of Change, Celebration of Business, and Business Salute to Police and Public Safety.

Can you tell us a bit about the upcoming San Diego Women’s Week? What should the community look forward to this year?

Are there any other exciting new projects, programs, or events coming up soon?

We have two new programs launching this month – Emerging Leaders and Military Transition Council.

Emerging Leaders is a group for employees of chamber members in the age range of 28 to 40. This group of emerging leaders is led by an advisory council of their peers and they will have their own networking events, professional development, and social cause to focus on.

Military Transition Council is a program for transitioning military members. This initiative will allow them to attend three classes on how to network in the civilian environment, articulate their skillset, and put together a strong cover letter and resume. After completing the program they will be given a complimentary one-year membership and encouraged to attend the business networking events. This will be the beginning of their journey to building a circle of influence in the business community.

Can you tell us about any philanthropic or volunteer work the NSDBC is involved with?

The Military Transition Council is our giveback to the military, and we also have our Business Salute to Police and Public Safety.

We make a sizeable donation to the Fallen Officers Fund and Camp Beyond the Scars with the Burn Institute.

How would somebody go about joining the NSDBC? What is the criteria for membership?

Our chamber is not your daddy’s chamber.

This organization is relevant to business and stays up-to-date and current with the issues that impact business every day. We have members that are home-based all the way

up to large corporations and everyone is treated equally. Each industry and company size gets something of value out of the chamber programs. It is the chamber team’s goal to make sure every member has been connected with once a quarter. It is not an organization where you join and then never hear from someone. We make sure that there is something relevant to you and your business so that you want to be engaged and stay engaged with us.

If you could grant the chamber one wish, what would it be?

To find an investor that believes in our work and could help us underwrite the Military Transition Initiative so we can open up to more than 20 service personnel each month.

W

hen local public schools are closing up at the end of the semester, Maranatha Christian Schools (MCS) is gearing up for another fun-filled summer. With over 30 enrichment classes and sports camps, the MCS summer programs have something to offer every student from preschool through eighth grade, and the schedules are flexible to accommodate any family’s needs. “We want to see children achieving their highest potential with the gifts and talents God has given them,” said Francine Good, Director of Marketing and Development.

Academic enrichment options range from general kindergarten and first grade preparation courses to subject-specific English and math courses, as well as courses in music, rocketry, arts and crafts, cooking, and other extracurricular fields to explore. The credentialed teachers give students the personal attention and supportive environment they need to succeed – while having fun, of course!

Maranatha sports camps are led by high school varsity coaches who will teach basic and advanced skills in volleyball, basketball, baseball, flag football, soccer and cheer. They will also offer a speed training camp. Coaches will emphasize fundamental skills, proper mechanics, and character development. Another exciting program is “The Summer Games”, which is a one-week, multi-sport camp for ages 5 to 12. The camp is structured so each camper will participate in four different sports over the course of the week.

MCS also partners with K.I.D.S. Therapy Associates to welcome special needs students to the camp.

Summer Theatre Arts Camp is always a hit, and lets students explore all the elements of production, from acting and dancing to stage combat and set design. “The Theatre Camp has been running for over 15 years, and is now in its second year at MCS,” said Francine. “The program is so popular it even has a following – inquiries are already rolling in and spaces fill up quickly.”

All summer staff members have passed Live Scan screening and background checks, and most are credentialed teachers and coaches at MCS during the school year. Staff members are also trained in CPR and First Aid. “MCS has an outstanding reputation for friendliness, safety, and cleanliness,” said Francine. “Our program is professionally managed by individuals who are passionate about building selfesteem in children.”

Over the years, the passionate teachers and comprehensive program have made a lasting impression on students and parents alike. “We’ve had several families who were so impressed with the friendly, caring staff and well-coordinated activities, they decided to enroll their children in our school,” said Julie Elliot, Director of the Summer Camp program. She and the entire MCS team are excited to welcome the community to another summer of enrichment and exploration.

wner/Director of Outpost Summer Camps Stuart Jones grew up with an outdoor summer camp, Tom Sawyer Camps, when he was younger. “We hiked, rode horses, made forts, sang songs, performed skits, got muddy, and learned how to make and keep friends with both the campers and counselors,” he explained. He spent 14 summers there as a camper, counselor, and director, and then decided to start his own venture, Outpost Summer Camps in 2001. Outpost Summer Camps offers three

traditional camp programs to children between the ages of 3 and 14, serving Poway and surrounding areas. According to Stuart, “Each camp has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.”

Three-week long sessions are what make Outpost Summer Camps unique. Stuart explained, “In this amount of time children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends. Children are able to form genuine relationships while at camp.” Another hallmark of the camp’s uniqueness is the door-to-door transportation. Campers are picked up at their homes each morning, driven to camp, and dropped off at the end of the day. “Our families often tell us that the ride to and from camp, full of songs and adventure, is one of their child’s favorite parts of the Outpost camp day,” Stuart explained.

“Our drivers are also our counselors and that makes the camp experience something special and unique, as kids are used to being driven around by their parents.”

A

s the all-star staff is proud to say, “There is never an off-season at Frozen Ropes!” The baseball and softball training program provides year-round opportunities for young athletes to learn and grow. THE INSPIRED MIND LEARNING CENTER

T

he Inspired Mind Learning Center has something to offer for any student who wants to have a blast while brushing up on math and science skills. MATHNASIUM OF 4S RANCH

W

ith school out of session, summer can be tons of fun – but it can also lead to a loss of academic skills called the “summer slide.”

Luckily, Mathnasium of 4S Ranch is here to help stop the slide! Owner Karen Lossing explained, “Students can close gaps from the previous year, deepen problem-solving, build up their automaticity in facts and number sense, get a refresher for an upcoming course, or get a sneak peek of skills they will learn in the new year.”

The summer programs allow for 16 or 24 sessions on a dropin basis for grades 2 through 12.

An initial assessment helps the dedicated Mathnasium team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and a before-and-after comparison report documents growth and achievement by the end of summer. Karen is proud to say the Mathnasium Method has demonstrated great success in helping kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in math. “Mathnasium’s programs have 98% of the parents polled stating their students improved,” she shared.

et into a new routine this summer with a fun-filled dance camp at Danceology Performing Arts Campus! Danceology offers a broad variety of camps and classes throughout the eight-week summer session for young boys and girls of all experience levels. “The camps are engaging atmospheres designed to build the foundation and love of dance while cultivating a personal relationship with the family and the student,” explained Danceology Owner Nicole Lucia. “We assess each dancer’s individual level and commitment and recommend classes specially designed for your child’s need.” Programs include five different tiny tot camps, intermediate workshops, and a beginning cheer/hip hop camp for ages 7 to 10. There are also boys-only hip hop and tap classes, as well as an adaptive dance class for young girls with special needs – the only local dance studio to offer such a program.

et ready to tumble into summer! North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids (NCG/GK) has the perfect camp for children of all ages and abilities.

Children can choose from halfday recreational camps, skill clinic camps, high school, tumbling, and acrobatics-focused camps. Program Director Karen Mcguire explained, “NCG/GK was formed out of our enthusiasm for working with children and our desire to encourage students of all ages to lead a healthier and happier existence through physical activity.”

Sessions are offered throughout the year on holidays as well as during the summer. “Children are grouped by age and camp preference as well as with any friends they have requested to be with,” said Karen. “Each camp session starts with a warm-up and review of safety rules. Then groups take turns with our famous Bungee Bouncer system, trampolines, and other equipment as well as enjoying craft and snack time provided by the gym.”

At NCG/GK everything is possible with an awardwinning facility and highly trained staff. The 17,000-square-foot climate-controlled facility is recognized as a Gold Medal Children’s Facility by the Character Counts Program. With a combined total of over 300 years of experience, the star-studded staff of 27 includes Miss Yufei, the 2005 Chinese All-Around Champion, Mr. Dave, a California Coaches Association High School Coach of the Year, and Mr. Daniel, a nationally ranked judge at regional gymnastics competitions. Vitamin D DEFICIENCY

Often nicknamed the “sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D is an important but frequently misunderstood nutrient. Conflicting news reports touting the link between Vitamin D and cancer prevention, or debating the pros and cons of Vitamin D supplements, have only added to the confusion.

While the jury may still be out on Vitamin D’s role in immunity or disease prevention, one thing is clear – our bodies need adequate Vitamin D levels for proper health, and we’re not immune to Vitamin D deficiency simply because we live in a climate with beautiful year-round sunshine.

Why it’s Important Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium and maintain normal levels of phosphorus – in other words, Vitamin D makes our bones strong. That’s why children with Vitamin D deficiency can develop rickets, a disease that causes bone softness and weakness, and adults who don’t get enough Vitamin D are prone to osteomalacia, which causes weak bones and muscles.

Where to Find It It may sound hard to believe, but our bodies produce Vitamin D when exposed to sunshine, specifically the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. While many of us will get all the Vitamin D we need from sun exposure, others will need to get Vitamin D through other sources as well. These individuals include people who spend a lot of time indoors, whether it’s due to an office job or because you’re home-bound due to your health. Additionally, while sunscreen use is critically important to preventing skin cancer, its continuous use may hamper Vitamin D production because sunscreens help block UV rays from reaching our skin.

Vitamin D is found in some foods including egg yolks, cheese, pork, fortified milk and cereals, and fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel. While you can also purchase over-the-counter Vitamin D supplements, please talk to your primary care doctor before taking any to determine whether you actually need them and what dose is appropriate.

Too much Vitamin D can be harmful to your health.

Who is at Risk?

Certain people are more prone to Vitamin D deficiency. In addition to people with limited sun exposure, those who are at higher risk include people who are elderly or obese, people who have darker skin, and babies who are exclusively breastfed. Additionally, certain medical conditions such as celiac disease and Crohn’s disease can cause a deficiency.

Talk to Your Doctor Because symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency may not be obvious, it’s very important not to diagnose yourself. Your primary care doctor can check your Vitamin D levels with a simple blood test. If you are Vitamin D deficient, your doctor will work with you on a course of treatment that may include careful sun exposure (to minimize skin damage from UV rays) and the proper use of Vitamin D supplements. 

Their yellow Labrador, Abbey, came to them overweight. She suffered skin allergies. She’s the face of the store – now that she’s active and allergy-free. But there are other “Abbeys” out there.

Real Estate Matters

What is a TC Fee and Why Should You Pay It?

S

elling a home is a complex transaction with dozens of forms. It is hard for an experienced agent to remember every single step and be 100% accurate 100% of the time. Not to mention there are a lot of newer agents who are still feeling their way through a process that can take several transactions to fully understand.

This creates a lot of risk for the broker who the agent is working for. There are a lot of ways to make mistakes and create liability. To protect against that, brokers have Transaction Coordinators (TC) that work with their agents to make sure the transaction is handled correctly. The TC earns a fee for every file that successfully closes, typically around $400.

So far, no problem, as the broker is requiring the agent to use a TC to help with quality control. The problem begins when the agent turns around and bills you, the client, for the TC. If you are already paying the broker $10,000 or $20,000 to sell your home, why are they hitting you up for an additional $400 to make sure they do it right?

Because they can. A listing contract is several pages and some agents try and get you to sign it without looking at it overnight. Buried in the contract will be a line item that you will pay for the TC fee. It shows up in your escrow paperwork as just another line item that you probably won’t question. If the agent does 10 deals a year, they net another $4,000 a year in profit by passing this cost to you.

At Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, we have forbidden our agents from collecting a TC fee from any client. You are paying us to be your advocate and our duty to you is fiduciary. Slipping an extra fee into your bill is counter to that principle and we won’t allow it. Neither should you. 

2015 Nighthawks Spring Sports Preview

W

elcome to the 2015 spring sports season.

We are heading into an exciting final season of the 2014-2015 school year with great momentum and excitement. We are so proud of their hard work and accomplishments on and off the field, court/mat, and pool deck. Our campus is filled with excitement with the start of our title defense in boys track and field. We are preparing for strong competition in the North County Conference while maintaining our high standards academically.

This season we expect a lot of high-powered games coming to Del Norte. We will be hosting top ranked competitors which should be a great challenge for our student-athletes.

Our athletic department believes we have highly motivated student-athletes, coaches, and staff who promote the success of programs through our motto “Earned Never Given.” We are continuing our quest for building a culture of success, establishing traditions for future Nighthawks, and graduating

student-athletes well prepared for post high school endeavors. We welcome and encourage the community to fill the stadium, tennis courts, pool deck, gym, and fields. We encourage our community to bring the family out for all the competitions in the spring. 2015 Eagles Spring Sports Preview

W

ith all four of Maranatha’s winter sports teams making solid runs for CIF playoff berths, the pressure is on the spring teams to follow suit. This season Maranatha will compete in baseball and track and field and will field a competitive cheer team.

There is a brand new feeling in the air for Maranatha’s baseball team as an entirely new coaching staff has begun the process of building a long-term developmental program. Former major league scout and college coach Steve Whitley (97-50) will try to repeat the success he had at Calvary Christian, Vista where over a five-year period he led the tiny school to the D-3 level, made CIF playoffs each year, and won one section title. He brings most of his coaching

staff with him, including renowned hitting instructor Jim Sullivan, also a former major league scout and hitting instructor. Pitching coach Jim Harmening has a strong reputation for developing arms.

The Eagles return their entire team from the 2014 campaign where they finished 8-15. They return two 1st Team All-League players in senior shortstop Metro Henning (.449) and junior Aaron Polley (.347). Seniors Bailey Williams (.448) and Corey Adkins (.364) were 2nd Team selections.

Polley heads the pitching staff where he put up a 1.60 ERA. Expect Jack Coles, Matt DeWildt, Andre Escoffier, and Mark Hewitt to be big contributors.

Former Olympic and collegiate coach Peter Gregory returns for his 7th season and expects

to make a solid run at the Pacific League title.

He has a very strong group of returners led by JP Edge, Jake Bronson, and Chris Spinato in sprints while Brian Sausser and Brett Doig will be strong in distance events. All-around performer Morgan Wurztler leads the girls’ team with strong seasons expected from Sheylyn Kyllo, Anna Corey, Jessica Boyer, and Elizabeth Collins.

The thriving Maranatha Cheer team led by 5th year coach Hillary Duggin will compete for the first time in school history. They are led by senior captains Stephanie Sheng and Maddie Gwaltney. ~ Steve Whitley, Athletic Director

Rett Racers from Monterey Ridge LOCAL TEACHERS RUN THE CARLSBAD HALF MARATHON TO SUPPORT RETT SYNDROME RESEARCH

P

rincipal Sal Embry and a group of teachers from Monterey Ridge Elementary School (MRES) recently banded together to run the Carlsbad Half Marathon with a very important cause in mind.

The team was organized by Jason Richard, a fifth grade teacher at MRES, whose three-year-old daughter Camille has Rett Syndrome.

Rett Syndrome is a genetic neurological disorder that causes lifelong impairments starting in early childhood. The disorder occurs almost exclusively in women and is typically diagnosed when children are only 6 to 18 months old. Gradual regressions can include lost speech, seizures, scoliosis, irregular breathing, and loss of the ability to walk.

The MRES teachers signed up as a team to support Camille and raise funds for Rett Syndrome research. Jason also set up a fundraising and awareness website for Camille. Donations go towards the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, which promotes awareness, aids families, and supports research towards treatments and a cure. The other teachers participating were fifth grade teacher Bernardo Campos and fourth grade teachers Steve Froebe and Kelly Larsen. “We all had a great time at the race and were supported by several staff members who showed up and cheered us on at mile markers 3 and 10,” shared Sal. He continued, “For three of us – me, Kelly, and Steve – it’s our first year at Monterey Ridge, so it was also

a great team-building activity and a chance to get to know each other better and support a great cause.” 

How Does Your Garden Grow?

DEL SUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GARDEN GETS NEW IRRIGATION SYSTEM

T

he Del Sur Elementary School Garden recently received an automatic watering system that will help the garden continue to grow as a place of fun and learning for students. The garden was built in 2011 by a Boy Scout troop from Del Norte High School and features seven raised garden boxes, potted trees, and shrubs. The garden is maintained by a student club along with dedicated parent volunteers. The club meets regularly to plant, water, weed, dig, and harvest their fruits and vegetables. There’s also a milkweed shrub that attracts caterpillars and butterflies, letting the students get a firsthand look at the butterfly life cycle.

The new drip irrigation system will be highly appreciated by students and volunteers alike. “For many years, we have been watering the garden by hand. As you can imagine, it’s not the most effective system,” explained Katie Seidenwurm, a local landscape architect and parent volunteer. “It was hard to manage watering the garden over holiday breaks and weekend when we didn’t have access to the school. The underground pipes are in thanks to PUSD crews and donations from Hunter Industries in San Marcos.”

The students celebrate the fruits of their labor twice a year with harvest parties, where they learn to make salad and dressing from scratch. “There has been more than one student who has converted to a salad lover because of these parties,” shared Katie. The latest party was in December and the next is planned for late April – the students are excited to ramp up the hard work for a fruitful growing season. 

el Norte High School seniors have come a long way since the start of the school year. Undaunted by the spread of the infamous senioritis, we continue to proudly represent Nighthawk Nation as we anxiously anticipate news from colleges across this great nation and plan out our impending futures away from the nest.

For some, a four-year university is just on the horizon, and the wait for acceptances can be even more agonizing than the application process itself. Every day means another frantic run to the mailbox in wild anticipation of the possibility of getting into

your dream school. This is the month when our futures will be revealed – where will our four years of blood, sweat, and tears lead us?

Those who plan to stay close to home may be planning for higher learning at one of several excellent community colleges that offer students the opportunity to save money, prepare for transfer to a four-year college, get ready for a career, try out college, and take advantage of a flexible schedule.

Still others may be entering the workforce, serving in the armed forces, or embarking on a gap year of travel.

Regardless of what happens over

the next couple of months, one thing is for certain. We have all been shaped by our myriad of experiences over the past four years as proud members of The Flock.
