THE STUDIO Susan D Photography is a portrait studio specializing in newborn, children and family portraiture in beautiful Larkspur, Colorado. The comfortable studio space is the ideal setting for mom's that want a calm and thoughtful session for their newborn and/or children. When you visit the studio, you will find a nursing area, changing table and toddler play area (there is also a snack station!). We encourage parents to relax and take it all in while we create beautiful images for you and your loved ones!

why hire a professional Would you go to a doctor who wasn't running a legal business?

Would you hand your paycheck over to someone in a pop up tent on the side of the road claiming to be a bank?

These might seem like extreme examples but you get my point. Your newborn is a priceless miracle that you been blessed with. Ten tiny toes, cherub little lips, perfect little bodies. Why would you trust your precious bundle with anyone but a professional?

So what does it mean to be a Professional Photographer?

Legal Business - Means being a legitimate business; having a business license, paying sales taxes, having insurance and so on. Did I mention insurance? If something happens to your newborn, is your photographer insured?

Equipment - Professional level, and expensive might I add, camera's, lenses, lighting equipment . . . and then the props! Oh the props!

Training - Countless hours of online training, books and workshops learning about everything from camera's and lighting equipment to how to safely pose a newborn and parents.

Experience - Years mastering what they have learned and having a solid portfolio to prove that.

what to expect My newborn sessions are always held in the comfort of my home studio in Larkspur.

Newborn sessions include siblings, if applicable, several poses of the newborn and finally parent and family images. Sessions last approximately 2 hours to accommodate getting the baby settled and soothed into a deep sleep.

I stock a variety of props, hats, headbands, outfits, blankets and more! The props selected will correspond to information I receive from your pre consultation and the color schemes of your liking.

investment NEWBORN SESSION FEE | 150 All sessions include (1) a pre-portrait consultation to discuss ideas and plan your session (2) image prep of 30-50 images for your gallery and (3) professional guidance during your viewing appointment that will help you select your final portraits and products.

COLLECTIONS We offer two options for purchasing digital files, prints and/or products. Our most popular option is our 'Create A Collection'. With this collection you will be able to customize a portrait package according to your own needs and enjoy all digital files from your gallery!

Digitals come on a custom USB and we will also upload your images to a print fulfillment site which links to one of our professional labels.

frequently asked WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A NEWBORN SESSION? Newborn sessions are best within the first 14 days of birth; however, if your baby is premature there is a much bigger window of time to work with.

WHAT IF THE BABY ARRIVES EARLY/LATE? When you book your newborn session I will simply note your due date and once your baby arrives we will finalize your session date. By booking ahead of schedule it will insure you a spot on Susan's calendar.

WHEN IS THE SESSION FEE DUE? The session fee is due upon booking your session.

DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH IN CLIENT HOMES? Newborn sessions are always in my home studio in Larkspur where I have all my lighting equipment and props.

HOW DO YOU GET THE BABY TO SLEEP DURING THE SESSION? Milk, warmth and white noise play a huge role in helping to the baby get into a deep sleep for photos. The studio is kept very warm so the baby is warm and comfortable.

WHAT IF MY BABY WON'T SLEEP? I typically don't have a trouble getting babies to sleep for photos; however, sometimes they can be fussy and not want to cooperate. In this case, I will simply photograph them awake until they are ready for some sleepy time.

WHEN WILL THE IMAGES BE READY? Approximately 2 weeks after your session you will return to the studio for your viewing appointment during which time you will get to view all the edited images in a slideshow and in detail to help determine your product choice.
