TRAFFIC ALERT Geelong Ring Road, exit ramp works The Melbourne-bound exit from the Geelong Ring Road to Waurn Ponds Drive closes overnight on Tuesday 18 June, for important asphalt works.

During the closure, from 9pm to 5am, drivers will continue to the Barrabool Road exit, then the southbound entry ramp to get back to Waurn Ponds Drive.

The unicorns amongst us Thanh Nguyen

I remember back in the 90’s the hot topic plaguing hormonal teenagers was body image.

We were educated about body disorders, eating disorders and the dangers of media on our own self esteem.

Supposedly regular people like you and I are now able to change our entire lifestyles to lose exorbitant amounts of weight, transforming themselves from morbid obese individuals to fitness fanatics utilizing only the kitchen bench and a blender full of determination.

What about that age-old saying that people don’t change? Isn’t this all evidence that we CAN change? Look at those amazing before and after photos!

Do you remember that line from Baz Luhrmann’s Sunscreen Song made famous in the movie Romeo and Juliet?

“Don’t read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly”.

Well, let’s have a look at the dental public train. In the last ten years as a dentist, of all the patients I tell to reduce sugar intake and practice a regular hygiene habit, how many patients have I seen change of their own accord? I’d say three or maybe four.

We became aware that the supermodels featured in these magazines were the unicorns of body image, just as were the characters featured on TV and in the movies.

Those handfuls of people are the unicorns. I can take no more credit than a billboard on the side of a bus stop. I gave them the information and they did the rest.

These unicorns that are a rarity amongst us are the ones who get the most attention on the media avenues and soon enough the standard is raised and us mere mortals become “ugly” in comparison.

How many of my patients have no fear and love coming to see the dentist?

About five.

Go on a public train and have a look at the real demographic. How many people have the hair of Delta Goodrum or the chiseled jaw of Chris Hemsworth?

Fast-forward almost twenty years later and we have the same issue only increased exponentially with the introduction of social media.

All of a sudden now there are even more unicorns amongst us. We are now in AMAZING relationships with our best friends who, yes we have disagreements with but calmly, without getting heated and we work through them with an ethereal ease. We are so supportive of each other’s goals and have an amazing physical connection too!

I certainly am not one of those people. I won’t tell porkies about looking forward to having my wisdom teeth out.

I have plenty of stories about my absurd behavior when it was time for the role reversal, which I’ll save for a later date.

I don’t take it personally, I know it’s not a day spa when patients are coming to see me so I don’t expect enthusiasm unless it’s dishes out with a side of sarcasm.

These unicorns quit smoking cold turkey, floss every day, score A’s in tests without studying and eat whatever they want without gaining any weight.

We can change, we can lose weight, we can practice mindfulness, we can practice gratitude but it is not second nature. It takes perseverance, it takes encouragement, it takes guidance. It is not easy.

We are going to fall off the bandwagon, we are going to have cheat meals, we are going to have a sneaky cigarette.

So if you decide to do something to change your life and you find that you are struggling it’s because you’re human.

Fall.

Get back up.

Keep going.

All credit goes to their amazing willpower/intelligence/metabolism, let’s not diminish the beauty of art but for the rest of us, a healthy dose of reality doesn’t go astray.

So just remember people are never going to be unicorns. Don’t beat yourself up when you try your hardest and still don’t sprout a horn on your head or grow those endless legs.

The general population is not unicorns.

We haven’t got endless legs, we don’t

Hi, My name is Cindy and our family have been long time residents in the area. My grandparents started in Modewarre and our family has stayed in the area, from Modewarre, to Gherang, Moriac and Buckley.

My Step father has been working at the Winchelsea hospital for many years. Myself and my cousin’s attended Moriac primary school. The reason for the quick background information is to paint a picture that we have been part of the Winchelsea and surrounds community for all of our lives. When I say OUR lives I am talking specifically about my cousins and I. I’m not sure if you have heard about Zoe’s Fight but we have started a Non-for profit organisation in the name of my god-daughter.

At Zoe’s Fight our aim is to raise awareness into Children’s Brain Cancer and raise funds for research into this killer in the hope that one day no family has to go through what we have. Below is an extract from the Zoe’s Fight web site.

In March 2017, our beautiful daughter Zoe was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of Brain Cancer called giant cell glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).

Zoe was an incredible and happy little girl – artistic, brave and obsessed with everything unicorns, butterflies and rainbows. Despite fighting courageously for 9 months, Zoe lost her battle just before Christmas.

Zoe's Fight exists to continue the legacy of our darling princess warrior, Zoe, honouring the promise we made to continue to fight in her memory, to help others facing the same fight she so bravely fought for 9 months.

Zoe's Fight Foundation is a registered charity in Australia, with all funds raised being donated to help find a cure for kids brain cancer.

Please have a look at the site, here you can find some scary statics into this horrible killer and our upcoming events and merchandise for sale.

I am writing to you in the hope that you may support our cause and place an article in the Winchelsea Star. We have our annual ball coming up in September and we are looking for donations for a silent auction and of course are selling tickets to this amazing event. Thankyou for taking the time to read this and please let me know of the outcome.

Method

RECIPE OF THE WEEK Jam Roly Poly Ingredients 125g Self-raising flour 125g plain flour 125g margarine 100ml water 1/2 cup strawberry jam Syrup 2 cups boiling water 1 tbs margarine 1/2 cup sugar

Sift flours

2.

Rub margarine into flours

3.

Add enough water to make a stiff dough

4.

Roll out into a rectangular shape

5.

Cover with jam

6.

Roll up, press sides and ends together, and place in greased casserole dish.

7.

To make the syrup, mix water margarine and sugar, until the sugar has melted.

8.

Pour over roly poly

9.

Bake at 200c for approximately 40 minutes

10. Serve hot with cream

What's in Season The Winchelsea Wholefoods Team

Winter is setting in, which means we’re saying goodbye to some of the summer fruits and veggies we’ve had in the shop these last few months. In their place, we’ll be introducing new seasonal produce until spring rolls around.

Tomatoes, cucumbers and berries are now out of season but citrus, kiwis and rhubarb have started to flourish. Kiwis are a great lunchbox fruit full of antioxidants, minerals and a higher amount of vitamin C than oranges! Rhubarb is wonderfully tangy and versatile and can be stewed, roasted or puréed into a number of warm winter desserts.

As for dinners, we’re fully stocked with the winter staples — potatoes, carrot, mushrooms, leek, pumpkin, spinach and more; all great for a variety of soups, stews and curries. Winter is also bringing us fennel, kale, parsnip, cauliflower and

broccoli in abundance, and we’re sourcing it all chemical and pesticide free and as locally grown as possible.

To go with these nourishing veggies, we have our selection of Zeally Bay Sourdough (delivered fresh on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and our range of dry and fresh Otway pasta; the perfect accompaniment to any sauce or soup.

We’re also in the process of modifying and expanding our selection of bulk pulses for winter, so we’d love to hear what your favourites are and anything new you’d like to see in store.

Winchelsea 54 def North Geelong 40 North Geelong got the jump on us this week with the combinations that have worked the last couple of week not really finding the same success. The entrance of Ebony Berg to the court in the second quarter created a moving goal circle with coach Kendall Carracher which proved hard for North Geelong to combat. The move of Lillian Kent back into the defensive circle was the tipping point of the game as it shut down North Geelong's goaling opportunities allowing us to take the lead with a smashing 3rd quarter of 19-8. We finished off well to take a comfortable win after winning the last quarter by 7 goals.

Winchelsea 46 def North Geelong 34 After a tough couple of weeks for B Grade we came out this week determined to get back on the winners list. The first three quarters was a pretty tight affair on the score board with us holding a slight lead, seeming in control but not really breaking the game open. Connie Royal has been a bit under the weather the past couple of weeks and her return to form had a massive impact on shutting down North Geelong's attack in the last quarter with some amazing intercepts. Pressure from Narelle Place in wing defence helped in setting up the intercepts and Belinda Czerniawski's ability finish off the score board allowed us to take a very comfortable 12 goal win.

C Grade

North Geelong 44 def Winchelsea 19 We started off strong this week in the first quarter, keeping the North side to 7 goals and being able to find our goalers well.

However the extremely experienced and

physically strong North Geelong increased their pressure on our attack which forced errors and up the other end they seemed to open up their goal shooter who scored a mammoth 40 of their 44 goals. Our defensive end worked very hard to take up any slippage in the North attack and the particular efforts of Ebony Millich and Brianna Carpenter seemed to impact North the most. Claire Mawson was consistent through midcourt providing in the most very patient feeds.

D Grade

North Geelong 50 def Winchelsea 11 Facing up against a very tall and strong 2nd placed North Geelong side we struggled a bit on the scoreboard but had some nice passages of play throughout the game. We brought up junior players Courtney Spoors and Ieisha Brown, who put in a great deal of effort against the experienced opposition. Danielle Caroll provided great feed and drive to the circle and she was complemented by Ieisha Brown in centre. Makayla Nelson did not give up against a strong bodied and tall accurate North shooter, whenever they slipped up she snapped it up.

North Geelong 33 def Winchelsea 10 Unfortunately our 17 & under team were outclassed this week by a very strong North Geelong side. Full court pressure from the whole team provided plenty of opportunities for turnovers. This culminated with the partnership between Hayley Steed and Rhiannon Nelson with their tough defensive pressure making it difficult for North to score. The strong drives of Ieisha Brown and Courtney Spoors through the goal third showed some real promise finishing off some

good passages of play. Unfortunately our own unforced errors had the biggest impact on the scoreboard allowing North to take a comfortable win.

North Geelong 35 def Winchelsea 19 North Geelong got the jump on us this week with a 6-1 first quarter which they managed to extend on throughout the game. To our credit we never gave up with our last quarter being the closest with only a two goal margin. Alice Jennings and Demi Robertson drove hard for the ball all game, picking up any loose balls, while Hayley Atkinson and Alaskah Davis defended hard against the very accurate North Geelong goalers (shooting at 90% after the first quarter). Grace Leeson showed her versatility swinging between goals and defence with relative ease.

Winchelsea 23 def North Geelong 17 We looked like winners from the very first quarter taking this 5-1 and taking this confidence into the remaining quarter allowed us to have the win sealed by three quarter time and make some positional rotations, a great effort given North Geelong are 3rd on the ladder.

Eloise Kolmas is showing an amazing ability to read the play and pick off intercepts in goal defence shutting down the North Geelong attack. Samantha Kuchenmeister has grown both in confidence in goal attack over the last few weeks and created a great attacking drive into the circle with an accurate finishing shot. Keep up the great work girls!

Welcome to this weeks Blue’s News.

Last Saturday brought ideal conditions to Eastern Reserve where the W.F.N.C. hosted North Geelong in what was a crucial game for the Senior Blues. A loss to Thomson and Bannockburn had put pressure on the team to regroup and put their stamp of authority back on the season.

RESERVES

Winchelsea 12.5.77 def Nth Geelong 5.12.42.

The Reserves were wanting to do well against Nth Geelong as they were very close together on the ladder. The Blues got off to a great start in the first quarter leading 5.2 to 1.2 at the first change.

The Nth Geelong side came out hard in the second and made up some ground on the scoreboard but the Blues continued to be the better ball handlers and held a 16 point lead at half time.

The Blues continued to be cleaner with the ball and more accurate on the scoreboard to run out winners by 35 points. A very handy win by the Reserves should see them move up the Ladder and if they can continue this good play should have a look at a Finals campaign.

After viewing the excellent result for the Reserve side the Senior team came out and set a cracking pace in the first quarter to blow Nth Geelong away with a score of 9.2 to 1.1 at quarter time.

Nth Geelong evened things up in the second but couldn’t make any real impact on the scoreboard, giving the Blues a very handy lead at half time of 54 points. After half time the Blues continued their attacking style of football, Jye Price having a great game returning from a concussion injury and Mark Blake showing great form in the ruck and around the ground. The final result or the Blues was a good percentage lifting win of 89 points.

All at the W.F.N.C. were saddened at the injury news of Dylan Williams with a acl injury the previous week. Dylan will be missed for the remainder of the season. The Blues wish him well in his recovery.

On a brighter note for the Club, our own Shirley Leak was interviewed on the ABC radio programme The Coodabeens last Saturday morning.

Shirley ruled the airwaves for a good 15 minutes with the panel and the Club is proud of the well deserved recognition for her. Congratulations and well done Shirley!

Next week sees the Blues travel up the highway to take on Werribee Centrals at their home ground.

This will be another real test for the Blues as the 2019 season continues, any supporters that can make the trip please do so to make plenty of noise for the W.F.N.C.

WINCHELSEA WINCHELSEA UNITING CHURCH Don’t these weeks come around fast.

Nice rain we have had now we could do with a couple of days of dry weather so that we can start weeding and cutting the grass. It sure doesn’t take long too grow.

Sporting wise both Australia and the UK are doing well in women’s soccer and men’s cricket which is nice to see. At long last we have a champion at tennis, very well done to Ashleigh Barty and in a couple of weeks Wimbledon will be starting. All go in the sporting arena.

Just try and remember not to cheer to loudly or you might upset someone.

Whether your experience of the Holy Spirit is like a noise of thunder which fills the whole room or the gentle words of Jesus breathing the Spirit on you be aware of that work in you. Be aware of that growth in you. Know that you are loved and act so that you share that love with others.

St Mary MacKillop Church Bannockburn: Wow! I keep having questions about what

the result will be for the church: lack of faith perhaps and care for a good result.

Our Parish: I ponder a lot about our parish. Like Mary as she experienced things with her Son, she “pondered them in our heart”. I journey around the parish and as I do, I come to know more: more people, more history, more possibilities, more needs, more desires.

I have talked about us needing to be disciples who go and make disciples: to be evangelists, spreading the Good News: “love others as I have loved you”.

The Spirit is already moving in the parish, in each of you. But to allow the Spirit to guide us fully we must do a bit of planning. So, I am pondering a workshop(s) to help build a picture of how we want to grow God’s love in our parish. Not sure how or when yet but please think about how you think we can act/be different in each of our communities so that we build a community based in God’s love.

St Mary MacKillop Church: The rusty steel beam? It missed the truck so didn’t get painted yet (but it will). Progress is going to plan. It is early days yet but there seem to be no barriers to finishing on time before Christmas.

From Father Charles Plains Alive: Following the success of our first Plains Alive Event, the 2nd Plains Alive Event will be held in the Bannockburn Cultural Centre from 6pm – 7.30pm on Sunday 4th of August. With more information coming later so please put the date in your diary On Saturday evening we celebrated with six of our young children and their families their Reconciliation with Mass. Next weekend two more children will make their reconciliation followed by the celebration of nine children receiving of their 1st Holy Communion (Eucharist) during the Feast of Corpus Mass. So please join the children and their families to celebrate with a cuppa after Mass in the hall, it will be warm in there. A plate of food to share would be appreciated.

The Mass of Healing & Lunch will be held on Saturday 20th July at St Joseph’s Meredith, with Mass at 11am followed by Lunch at 12noon.

How does it work?

- Save your bread tags (even broken ones!)

- Drop them off at collection points in the allocated box.

- The bread tags are collected and re-purposed into items like picture frames, coat hangers and trays.

- The re-purposed items are then sold to raise money for people in need of a wheelchair.
