A person appearing for the CISM exam has to answer multiple choice questions covering four areas: • • • •

The candidate must score a minimum of 450 or higher in the 200-800 point scale that ISACA uses. A scaled score encompasses conversion to a common scale from the raw score on an exam.

However, scoring the passing grade in the CISM exam is not enough for getting the certification. There are a few other criteria that a candidate is required to fulfill to receive the CISM certification.

Receiving the CISM Certification A candidate is required to complete the work experience mentioned in the CISM certification to keep the CISM certificate valid after five years. Without the work experience, the certification will cease to be valid after five years. So the candidate is given the option to complete all the requirements within 5 years of taking the exam as outlined CISM. If the candidate fails to do so the score will become null and void.

Work Experience A CISM candidate is required to submit a verified work experience document either prior to the exam or within the next five years of appearing for the exam.

A candidate must have a minimum of five years of experience in information security work. Out of the five years, he/she must have experience of a minimum of three years in information security management work in at least three or more of the job practice analysis areas. The job experience cannot precede more than 10 years from the certification application date and neither can it surpass 5-year mark from the day the exam was passed.

Two-Year Courses/Certifications • Certified Information System Auditor (CISA) • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) • Post-graduate degree in Information Security or related field, like Business Administration, Information Systems, Information Assurance, etc.
