er artista es ser libre, es hacer lo que uno quiere”, les dice Sergio De Loof a un grupo de jóvenes que acaban de ver la muestra ¿Sentiste hablar de mí?, su primera exhibición antológica en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires.

“Es muy divertido, porque uno está para decir de qué color son las cosas –completa la definición–.

Nunca dejen que nadie les diga de qué color tienen que pintar algo”. Y podría pensarse que lo que este artista trash de la moda les está diciendo a estos jóvenes que lo miran curiosos es el leitmotiv de todos sus trabajos.

Es que este excéntrico creador siempre se manejó con una libertad creativa que lo caracteriza.

Siguiendo esa línea fundó y ambientó bares, restaurantes y discotecas como Bolivia (1989), El Dorado (1990), Morocco (1993), Ave Porco (1994), Club Caniche (1995), entre otros. “To be an artist is to be free, to do whatever you want,” says Sergio de Loof to a group of young people who have just seen his exhibition ¿Sentiste hablar de mí?, his first retrospective at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires.

“It’s really fun, because you get to decide the color of things,” he finishes, “Never let anyone tell you what color to paint something.” You could argue that what this trash fashion artist is sharing with these wide-eyed young people is, in fact, the leitmotif of his work.

This eccentric artist has always stayed true to his distinctive creative freedom. With that approach, he has created and designed bars, restaurants and night clubs such as Bolivia (1989), El Dorado (1990), Morocco (1993), Ave Porco (1994), Club Caniche (1995), among others. experimental exhibits and theater plays in a crosssection of different crowds: celebrities, business people, artists and intellectuals. And above all, they were places that became spaces of freedom for marginalized minorities.

Do you see this exhibit as a tribute?

Yes, it’s a tribute and I’m very much alive. Thanks to that, I got to drive the entire museum staff crazy all year long: “No, not this; this, not that.” I can’t believe I’m working with people who were born the same year I created Bolivia.

Why did you name yourself the “Argentinian Almodóvar”?

I remember a speech the Lucrecia Martel gave about Almodóvar that made me cry. I remember it and say it out loud, "I am the Argentinian Almodóvar."

Nobody else gave a place to the freaks, the fat, the ugly, the beautiful, the trans, you know? Aside from the movie-making, I’m the closest thing to that to ever exist here. tanto desfiles, exposiciones experimentales y obras de teatro como el cruce entre diferentes públicos: farándula, empresarios, artistas e intelectuales. Y, por sobre todo, fueron lugares que se convirtieron en ámbitos de libertad para las minorías discriminadas. ¿Sentís esta muestra como un homenaje?

Sí, es un homenaje y yo estoy vivo. Entonces, pude volverlos locos a todos, anduve todo el año detrás del equipo del museo: “No, esto no, esto sí, esto no”.

A mí me sorprende que yo esté tratando con gente que nació en el año que creé Bolivia. ¿Por qué te autotitulaste “el Almodóvar argentino”?

Recuerdo el discurso sobre Almodóvar que dio Lucrecia Martel, me hizo llorar. Lo pienso y lo vuelvo a repetir: yo soy el Almodóvar argentino. No hubo otro que recibiera a freaks, a gordos, a feos, a bellos, a trans, ¿me entendés? Sin hacer películas, yo soy lo más parecido a eso que existió.

Of the multiple titles you've been given – costume designer, photographer, decorator, artist – which one do you identify with most?

I’ve been thinking… I’m not a decorator. What I respect most is haute couture, but I don’t know if that’s what I am. I don’t know. It’s like Zoolander, because to me it’s all shenanigans, insanity, a form of frivolity. If you google a Galliano or Christian Dior fashion show, it’s art. I think haute couture is drama, seeing models walking with those strange outfits on turns it into a theater play, gives it a certain energy. I don’t go to the theater, I go to fashion shows.

In the '90s, you gave Buenos Aires nights a new identity. What is your take on the current avantgarde?

I find it quite embarrassing, there honestly are no places that are truly avant-garde, surreal, crazy, modern. When the Spaniards pitched me Morocco,

Entre las múltiples definiciones que te adjudican: vestuarista, fotógrafo, decorador, artista… ¿Con cuál te sentís más identificado?

Yo estuve pensando… Decorador no soy. Lo que más respeto es la alta costura, pero no sé si pude acercarme. No lo sé. Es tipo Zoolander, porque para mí es pavada, es locura, es una especie de frivolidad. Buscás en YouTube un desfile de Galliano o de Christian Dior y es arte. Yo creo que la alta costura es drama, ver una de las modelos caminando con esas cosas tan raras que llevan puestas se convierte en teatro, emite una energía.

Yo no voy al teatro, yo quiero ver moda.

En los 90 le diste una nueva identidad a la noche porteña, ¿cómo ves hoy la vanguardia?

A mí me da mucha vergüenza, realmente no hay un lugar vanguardista, surrealista, loco, moderno. Cuando los gallegos me proponen Morocco, me dicen que El Dorado era más top que toda la movida madrileña. Es decir, lograr eso es mi objetivo siempre, que Buenos Aires tenga una gema propia.

they said El Dorado was more innovative than anything being done in Madrid. And that has always been my goal, for Buenos Aires to have its own special something.

Do you have plans to create another new space?

I have a boîte in mind, a Mau Mau concept.

I’d like to create a modern space, something out of the ordinary, but it would require a lot of money, it’s very difficult. One time I was

¿Tenés pensado volver a crear algún nuevo espacio?

Tengo pensada una boite, tipo Mau Mau, me gustaría crear un lugar moderno, que no sea nada común, pero hace falta dinero, es todo difícil. Estaba sentado, fumando, en la puerta de un lugar, y entraban turistas a una cervecería que podría existir en cualquier lugar del mundo, y a mí me daba vergüenza no poder ofrecerles un lugar loco. ¿Por qué, como ciudad, tenemos que pasar desapercibidos?

Solés poner en tus posts “Qué porquería es el arte”, ¿cuál es el sentido de esta frase?

[Se ríe] Hay mucho arte que me aburre, yo no admiro a ningún artista. A Cristián Dios –se puso “Dios” de apellido– lo admiraré, hace moda. Pero, en realidad, no admiro a nadie. Porque no me gusta nadie, y todo el mundo está fascinado con todo: “¡Ay, ay, qué top tal!”, y yo asqueado de todo, ¿entendés?

A mí me gusta lo mío y no me gusta nada. Si no, te lo diría. No son divertidos, no tienen humor.

sitting and smoking outside of some venue and saw some tourists go into a brewery that could exist anywhere else in the world, and felt embarrassed that we’re not able to offer them a crazier place. As a city, why do we have to blend with the rest?

You tend to caption your posts with “Art sucks,” what is the purpose of that phrase?

[Laughs] There is a lot of art that bores me, I don’t admire any current artists anymore.

I do admire Cristián Dios – he changed his last name to “Dios” (God) – and he works in fashion. But to be honest, I don’t admire anyone. Because I don’t like anyone, and everyone is fascinated with everything: “Oh my god, they’re so great!” and I’m repulsed by everything, you know? I like my work and nothing else. If I did, I’d tell you. They’re not fun, they have no humor.
