WHAT DOES IT MEAN

To Be Healthy?

B Y: T Y L E R V E R M E U L E N & M A R I S S A S Y LV E S T E R

The age-old question “what does it mean to be healthy?” will exist forever. Trying to provide a simplified answer to this is not always possible, given that benchmarks for overall health are different for everyone. One person’s standards of needs to feel healthy will not always be the same as another’s. As nutritionists, we believe that health is multifaceted and complex. We cannot objectively say, “eat this and you will be healthy”; doing so would not necessarily be accurate nor honest. Our job is to look at all individuals as being biochemically unique, and to base our direction of nutritional support and dietary interventions on each person’s individual needs. We work to help our clients achieve optimal health by planning tactics to aid in reaching their initial, short-term, and long-term goals.

O

ne issue we constantly face is the population’s fascination with body image and the numbers that appear on the weight scale. Often, the numbers on the scale our clients see in our office completely validate or invalidate the work they have done over the course of a week. However, what only really matters is that our clients adhered to their specific meal plan, drank plenty of water each day, got some moderate activity, and created mindful connections; these small shifts in lifestyle help create new patterns and habits that will, in the long run, stay with them for life. Here at Simply For Life Milton, we can help create plans that will show clients immediate results. In order for any kind of physiological and dietary change, nutritional information is essential in order to build the foundation of a new, sustainable

lifestyle. Understanding the why behind our nutritional information is integral in creating optimal health. As genuinely caring nutritionists, we believe health is a lifelong endeavour. It should never be a quick-fix solution. Instead, we strive to shift our clients’ focus from numbers on a scale to feelings and results of overall wellness. As well, part of our mission is to provide a deep education in healthy living so that long after clients leave us, they feel confident enough in their knowledge of food to sustain their new lifestyle long term. After all, the lives we lead are filled with much more than just numbers on a scale. Some of the best moments we experience as nutritionists come from our clients telling us that their nutritional journey has been much more worthwhile than they could have ever Continued on page 6 SPRING 2019

anticipated; we greatly value the fact that we can impact someone’s life and create positive changes. While this is not the sole reason we look forward to coming to work every day, it is definitely a major contributing factor of why we love what we do! We believe food is fuel, and that nutrient-rich food helps lay the foundation for one’s good health. As Hippocrates once said: “Let medicine be thy food, and food be thy medicine.” At Simply For Life Milton, we believe that the whole, natural foods in our market paired with our whole foods meal plans have exceptional health benefits that can’t be met in corner stores, fast food joints, and even many grocery store middle aisles. We sell products that assist the general public in making health-conscious decisions in a convenient manner. Whether you are on-the-go, shopping on a budget, or just looking for somewhere you can go to get all the keto, paleo, or vegan items on your shopping list, we have it all.

Our market is vital to helping our clients, as a health transformation requires a minimum of 80% clean eating on a weekly basis. 4 out of 5 times, all meals and snacks should be good, nutrientrich options. This may seem like a huge leap for those who don’t already practice this eating regimine, but small shifts in the right direction make incredible changes in overall wellness. In a world with a rising obesity rate, more often than not, people are becoming consumed in simply looking skinny, streamlined, and small. What we fail to recognise, however, is that outward appearances don’t tell the whole tale of health. So, what do you say? Let’s put the scales away, and start living our best lives by focusing on small and significant improvements, and working to strive for our best overall health!

Motherhood and Womanhood BY SARAH IVANY

My mother used to have a clothesline in the backyard. I can picture it so clearly – the wafting scent of sweet lilac as the breeze gently blew by. I remember a cascade of colours as the laundry swayed back and forth – the sun hitting at all different angles and casting a prism over the green grass. It was there she would proudly and ceremoniously hang her panties, all in a line, two closepegs in each. As a young girl I would like to look at all the pretty designs, and watch her as she carefully hung each one, putting all the pinks together, the whites together, the brightly coloured, the polkadots.

30

years later, I can’t help but think of that clothesline – that special place in time where I learned to understand my mother as a woman, and not just a mom. Only now that I myself have two young boys at home and am working full-time do I truly recognise: the struggle is real! Some days I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror racing off to soccer practice and wonder where the woman went who generally looked pretty put together, had a closet full of nice clothes, and a lingerie collection to die for. In the early days of motherhood, my definition of feeling good about what I was wearing under my clothes was having underwear with no holes, or by pure coincidence only, my underwear matching my bra (the bra with the underwire jutting out of one side, poking me incessantly throughout the day, nonetheless). As women become mothers, they embrace their motherly role with all their might; they buy every motherhood book on the market, they pour themselves into all the expert advice on sleep, and potty training, and toddlers, and the best schools, and how to combat bullies, and how to raise kind, socially conscious kids. Mothers take great pride in being good at their job, as they should! It can be hard, grueling work, and more often than not, while mothers are busy

taking care of everybody else, they forget to take care of themselves. It occured to me one night while I was busy momming that I couldn’t remember the last time I had bought anything for myself. I had forgotten the side of me that was woman who likes cute purses, lipstick, a blow-out every now and then, and most of all, cute underwear. This was where the idea of Sexy Britches was born. It was a joining together of passions: making people feel happy, and really nice underwear. With Sexy Britches, I want to help women remember their sexy side with pretty underwear that is personally delivered to them every month. Out with the old and in with the new! As women, we know how important it is to feel confident about what we are wearing under our clothes – it can completely change your approach to each day. Especially when taking care of everyone else in our lives, it’s only fair to also remember what our little indulgences are, and what makes us feel sexy and confident. Whatever that indulgence is, whatever you choose it to be, remember not to feel guilty about it. Carve out some time regularly to take care of yourself, and kindle your own fire. You deserve to love yourself as much as you love everyone else.

REDUCING THE RISK OF

Postpartum Depression B Y D R . S H E R R Y V A N B LY D E R V E E N

It is common for women to experience a period of distress as they adjust physically, emotionally, and practically in the aftermath of labor and delivery, while also caring for their newborn child.

T

his period of distress often includes significant mood swings of frustration, irritability, sadness, weepiness, exhaustion, anxiety, preoccupation with the health of the infant, and alertness regarding their infant’s wellbeing as they get to know their child. Although such symptoms are common in the first two weeks postpartum, they begin to resolve as the body recovers and women adapt to their new life. A smaller proportion of women – approximately 10 to 20 percent – go on to develop postpartum depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Each of these mental health difficulties are marked by mood and/ or anxiety symptoms that are persistent, severe, and prolonged, and the symptoms impact the woman’s ability to carry out day to day tasks. Although postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD can affect any woman, women with a history of mental health struggles, poor emotional or practical support, lack of consistent sleep, and poor selfcare practices are at a greater risk. Here are some strategies you can use to either reduce your risk of developing postpartum depression, anxiety and/or OCD, or to promote recovery if you are already suffering:

• Nap when your child sleeps. It is essential to your functioning that you make up for lost sleep during the night. This is the most important strategy on this list. • Allow others to pitch in around the home so that you can get the sleep you deserve. Do not wait for others to help, ask for help. This will help reduce stress and/ or guilt regarding productivity, which for many women limits their willingness to nap. • Make your expectations realistic and flexible. Caring for a newborn means you will have less control over your day-to-day life, since your plans will have to accommodate your child’s changing needs and routines. • Be kind to yourself and create moments of selfpreservation. It is essential that you take time to relax and engage in some form of self-care daily. Whatever activity you choose, it should be at least 15 minutes a day of something that will make you feel happy and more relaxed. • Engage in some mild to moderate exercise daily. • Eat regularly and well, and avoid caffeine and alcohol. • Don’t expect to have the perfect child. Your baby will not follow developmental expectations Continued on page 10

The challenges of adjusting to your new role will lessen; you will find a routine, you will learn to be more adaptable, your body will heal, and you will have time to do groceries and tidy your home. If you find yourself with symptoms of postpartum depression, anxiety, or OCD, follow the above strategies, and consider the following, as well: • Speak to your family physician or obstetrician about the risks and benefits of medications. • Find a therapist. For postpartum anxiety and OCD, be sure that you seek out cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

• Have your partner read The Postpartum Husband by Karen Kleiman. • Be realistic in your expectations of recovery, it will take time. Postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD do not usually go away on their own – intervention and treatment are needed. Don’t let your symptoms prevent you from enjoying your child and your new role. HOW NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHES ARE

Going High Tech BY TANYA VAKIL FERNANDES

The neighbourhood watch has evolved with the times, as more residents are embracing technology to step up their surveillance game. There’s less reliance on foot patrol groups, and more on high-tech tools that make it easier to keep neighbourhoods safer. Here’s how neighbourhood watches are going modern. WEATHERPROOF CAMERAS

When residents are sleeping, outdoor cameras that can withstand all types of weathers can offer 24/7 surveillance. Many weatherproof cameras have night vision to provide a detailed recording of everything that’s happening within its view. Some cameras will even send alerts to a designated person when it detects any movement, allowing the resident to determine if it’s a false alarm or not. Residents can easily access the streams through web browsers on their computers; if an incident occurs, residents will have instant video footage to share with law enforcement.

DIGITAL MAPS

Many people rely on Google Maps to get around, but they’re also handy when it comes to planning foot patrol assignments for neighbourhood watches. Several police services have even developed their own neighbourhood maps indicating the number of criminal occurrences within a given district.

This allows residents to better understand what types of crimes typically occur in their area.

SOCIAL MEDIA GROUPS

Closed groups on Facebook allow residents to privately share photos or updates of any suspicious activity they’ve witnessed on their street. Access is restricted to authorized members only, and suspicious activity can be shared as soon as they happen, so residents don’t have to wait until the next meeting to warn their neighbours.

MOTION SENSOR LIGHTING

Outdoor lights that turn on as soon as they detect motion have been proven to effectively thwart intruders. That’s why some residents have banded together to install these outdoor lights as a way to reduce crime in their neighbourhoods. Some of these lights are so advanced they can detect body heat using infrared rays. That way, something as innocuous as a branch falling off a tree won’t trigger the system.

THERE ARE

No Easy Answers… B Y J A N E C OT NAM

It is said that the baby boomer generation is most likely the last generation to go to school, find a job, get married, start a family, and retire from said job. .

T

his is no longer the way for millennials and their children. For so many reasons, that simple straight line no longer exists. Career uncertainty and the lack of every day jobs has changed, and as a result, the economic and academic landscape has changed with it. We are no longer guaranteed employment upon graduation. This has placed a lot of stress on students who have worked hard to finish school; their career is still a proverbial step or two away.

Financial Post did a survey with students who were enrolled in school in 2018, and from the results, what was even more upsetting than the lack of employment opportunities available was the number of Canadian students graduating with an average debt load of $26,800. This debt can take as much as 10 to 15 years to pay back. What’s more, with its recent changes, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is no longer a viable option for a lot of students. The original grace period of six months to start repaying your loan has been rescinded. As well, 70% of grants given are now being converted to loans, with repayment beginning immediately upon graduation. RESPs are no longer serving the average family’s best interest. The changes in CRA rules are now showing the consequences of not keeping up with the times; the government grant – 20% of your annual deposits with an annual maximum of $500, to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 – has not seen an

increase in over 10 years. That amount was helpful 10 years ago, but without considering today’s financial inflation, not as much. To benefit from the full grant amount, you would have to invest $36,000 over 17 years. For children born this year, that amount will barely cover a semester. So, where does insurance lie with all this doom and gloom? If you invest in a Participating Whole Life policy for your child, you will receive annual taxfree dividends for life. The best part of this is that the investment grows for 100 years, even though you only pay for 20 years. This allows your child to have money during all the key milestones of their lives. There would be money for education, buying a home, starting their own business – everything a Gen Xer will need to be successful. Families who do not have life insurance on the parents also place inordinate amounts of stress on their children, should a tragedy occur. Many families have to drastically change their lifestyles to accommodate for the loss of a parent’s income. There are so many different ways to make sure your family is covered, from the least expensive Term Life policy, to the more complex Universal Life, but having any kind of life insurance is better than none! They say that death and taxes are the only guarantees in life; making sure your family is ready for both of those events is completely up to you, but it can absolutely guarantee an easier transition.

COVER STORY

BY SUSANA MEDEIROS

A MOMPRENEUR WITH A

R CK Solid Support System If you have a family and you live in Milton, chances are you’ve heard of Julie Rock Photography. In the last couple of years, Julie has become one to watch! Her recent success as a newborn, portrait, and family photographer finds her and her family ecstatic but equally humble. Although Julie has recently become one of Milton’s most sought-after photographers, like most hard-working entrepreneurs, her story didn’t start this way. Julie recalls the day that her love affair with her camera began. Her stepfather was a hobby photographer, and gave her her very first camera. She remembers loving photography from that day forward. But at the time, it was a hobby that she enjoyed, and had no aspirations of one day making a career out of it.

A

s an adult, and a single mom before meeting her husband Ty, making a living was difficult, and her first priority was her son Brayden. She contemplated going back to school to become a teacher, but at the time it was not economically feasible. Being around children brought her joy, and she knew she wanted to spend as much time with Brayden as possible, so starting a business as a home daycare provider made sense. Julie continued her daycare business well after giving birth to her

second child, Maddie. In March 2007, when Brayden was 9 and Maddie 4, Julie was introduced to Ty by a mutual friend. It was a whirlwind romance, and the couple married only 18 months later; at their wedding, Ty’s brother, Christian delivered a speech that described their romance as “quick, but not rushed.” In our interview, Julie doubles over laughing when Ty informed us that it was probably because he was super fit and muscular at the time! Ty

Julie The couple lived in Oshawa for the first few years of their marriage. However, when the plant Ty was working at became decommissioned, Ty’s new job search resulted in them making a home for themselves in Milton. Ty and Julie didn’t waste any time growing their family – we all think it’s because Ty was super fit and muscular at the time! The couple now share five kids and total; today, Brayden is 21, Maddie is 17, Ashton is 9,

Although Julie grew up with a camera in her hand, it wasn’t until a newborn photo session with Cohen when she became truly inspired to take up photography as a career. She says, “I remember coming home and telling Ty, that I could totally see myself doing this for a living.” After this realization, Julie became more and more focused on building her dream as a photographer. But the journey hasn’t always been an easy one. Trying to juggle a family of five, with three children under nine, a home daycare business, and being a present wife has always been the top priority for Julie, and her photography business is something that she has built around her family. Julie admits that there were times when she considered throwing in the towel, and changing careers for a more consistent income. She says that it was the unconditional support from her family and the community that kept her hanging on to her dream. As a family, the Rocks/ Claeners are a strong family unit. because Brayden and Maddie are Julie’s biological children from her first marriage. Ty was very quick to correct me: “we are not a blended family. We are a family.” While listening to him talk about his pride of all five children, I noticed Maddie in my peripheral vision, nodding and smiling. Their mutual support has served the family well during the struggles of building Julie’s success. Her photography has inevitably taken her away from the family in the evenings and on weekends, but Ty has no problem taking over all responsibilities while Julie is working. He shrugs and says, “even when she is here, I would still be helping put kids to bed, and helping with dinner. I’m not only doing it because she isn’t here.” Ty laughs, saying there was a time when Julie was so busy that Maddie would refer to Ty as Mom and Dad. The Rock/Claener kids are undeniably proud of their mother’s achievements. Maddie shares with us how grateful she is that no matter what is going on in her mom’s life, she always arranges everything around her children’s needs and schedules. “We never feel

like we are forgotten.” Julie and Ty both agree that Maddie has always been very dependable, and can always be counted on to help with the younger ones when she is needed. They agree, “she is such a great role model for them.” Although Brayden lives out in the east end with his biological father, the bond is just as tight. Brayden was not able to be present for the interview, but was sure to send Family Matters an email describing his feelings about his mother’s journey. In his beautifully written email, he tells us how proud he is of his mother for always giving her all to everything she does. He shares how grateful he is to have a mother who will always go out of her way for anyone. And most of all, he is proud of how, despite moving to a new city, and having financial struggles and general life challenges, she never gave up. He adds: “I am glad I have a mother like that.” I had a blast interviewing the three younger Rock/Claener kids. All in their pajamas and ready for bed, they were borderline loopy, proudly boasting about their mom. When I asked Cohen if he was proud of his mom, he said, with his hands in the Continued on page 24

air: “heck, yeah! Her pictures are always in such detail!” Ashton quickly interjects, and ensures that not only are her pictures in detail, they are “in shape.” “In shape?” I ask. “Yes, in shape. I don’t know how she gets all those people inside that small circle shape on her camera!” (We don’t know either, Ashton!) It may have been way past Leah’s bedtime, and maybe she was just tired, but when the four-year-old was asked if she was proud of her mother, she didn’t hesitate, and answered, “NO, go to work, she’s not enough!” Well, looks like Julie needs to work harder! Julie’s had her first paid photoshoot in 2012. She recalls shooting out of her bedroom studio at home, and out of her clients’ homes – in their kitchens, living rooms, wherever she could make it work. She quickly outgrew her space at home and started to shoot out of a shared studio here in Milton. Three years ago was when shift finally happened. model in order to become more in-line with what she had envisioned for her clients. Julie Rock Photography is now located at The Studio on Martin and Main in downtown Milton. It’s a beautiful, quaint, and intimate space. Clients can expect a very unique experience when having their sessions with Julie. The process from beginning to end is very personal, and will tug at heartstrings; clients can even expect to shed some joyful tears. She says, “I never wanted to be shoot and burn photographer. I want my clients to remember their consult and reveal session, and I want to build a relationship with them.” Julie’s humble character will not allow her to take credit for her success. She genuinely believes that it all wouldn’t have been possible without the undying support of her family and the community. One person she will always be grateful for is Maria Locker, CEO and Founder of Mompreneurs Canada. “Her genuine support and encouragement pushes me out of my comfort zone. I am blessed that she has come into my life.”

Although Julie’s passion has shifted to focusing on her photography business, she still does run a home daycare on a very part-time basis. Throughout the last three years, she has somehow managed to grow her photography business into one of the most successful businesses in town. Her services include maternity sessions, family photography, headshots, newborn sessions, Fresh 48 sessions, children’s photography, as well as product and event photography. Family Matters Magazine is also proud to have had her as our exclusive photographer for over three years. Our cover families always have a blast being shot by her. This time, as her family was being featured, the challenge was who was going to shoot her family? Julie reassured us that she had taken professional shots of her own family that included her in them. During their last family vacation, she had used her sister-in-law as a human tripod, and set up the shot herself. All shots, editing, and formatting were done by Julie Rock Photography. I guess Ashton is right, her pictures really are in shape!

Caring for Yourself WHILE CARING FOR OTHERS BY DR. KERRIS DEL ROSARIO

M

any people have somewhat stumbled into what is often referred to as “the sandwich generation”: the age of caring for young children and elderly parents at the same time. As well, traits that may have influenced the taking on of caregiving responsibilities for family members may have also led to a career in a helping profession (or a helping role, regardless of the field of employment). While caregiving can be admirable, the risk of caregiver burnout is real. So, here are some strategies for taking care of yourself, so that you can in turn sustainably care for others:

Prioritize Play

Leisure time is important to maintaining good overall health, so make time for things that you enjoy. Recognizing that what is enjoyable will be largely subjective, try to participate in a combination of physical, artistic/ creative, intellectual, religious/ spiritual, social, and solitary activities. Think of these as comprehensively caring for your mind, body, and spirit. 28

Don’t Deny Difficulties

Taking care of others is often hard and tiring, and it can bring up many challenges and struggles; trying to act as though it’s all ‘a walk in the park’ only fuels feelings of failure and inauthenticity. Instead, acknowledge the difficulties that arise, and seek help in coping. Friends, family, religious community members, support groups, and mental healthcare professionals are potential resources in this regard.

Soothe Your Senses

Since caregiving can be difficult and draining, fostering an attitude of self-compassion and self-kindness is critical. Brainstorm a number of things you find comforting, then pick one to do when you need to give yourself a figurative hug. Here are some ideas: look at some of your favourite photos, visit an art gallery, change into your comfiest robe and slippers, diffuse an essential oil with a pleasing aroma, take a walk and admire the sights, sounds, and smells of nature, listen to Continued on page 30 SPRING 2019

relaxing or uplifting music, watch a light-hearted tv show or movie, have a favourite snack or meal, get a massage, take a warm bath, or play with your pet.

Release the Reins

Taking on responsibility for things out of your control contributes to stress; think of this as similar to banging your head against a wall– you won’t move the wall but you will get a headache! Learn to release responsibility for things you can’t control (i.e. the progression of a loved one’s illness, or the way other children treat your child) and focus on the things you can realistically have an impact on (i.e. providing enjoyable company for a loved one during a stressful medical procedure, or helping build your child’s character and confidence so they can be both kind and assertive).

Remember the Reasons

Studies show that those who find deep meaning in what they do experience less conflict and stress from doing it. Therefore, remember the reasons why you take care of others, and bring them to mind often so they can help cultivate a sense of purpose in your life.

Caregiving may be your choice, part of your value system, and/or required of you by your situation, but in any case, caring for yourself better equips you to more sustainably care for others. So be encouraged, and take care! Did you hear?

IT’S BETTER SPEECH AND HEARING MONTH! BY YVONNE OLIVEIRA

Did you know that May is Better Speech and Hearing Month? Each May, Better Hearing and Speech Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders, and the roles of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists in providing life-altering treatment.

M

any people are unaware of the impact speech, language, and hearing difficulties have on daily life skills. Imagine not being able to communicate your feelings or needs. What if you couldn’t hear what someone was saying? Your quality of life would be greatly affected.

Did you know?

• 1 in 4 adult Canadians has some form of hearing loss. • 1 in 5 Canadian youth has signs of hearing loss. • Aging is the number one cause of hearing loss, with severity increasing over time. • The average adult waits 7 years after an identified hearing loss before pursuing amplification (i.e., hearing aid). However, the longer you wait to get hearing aids, the less stimulation your brain and hearing nerves get, and the worse you become at recognizing speech. Once your nerve is affected, you can’t reverse the damage. • An estimated 4% of preschoolers have a significant speech or language disorder. • A child with significant language difficulties (comprehension and/ or expression) is more likely to also have difficulty interacting with his peers and family, and is at risk for serious academic difficulties. • The latter difficulties are often associated with behavioral problems, but are in actuality results of daily frustration of understanding others, and/ or expressing oneself. Early detection and intervention of speech and language delays and disorders are critical.

HearSay Speech & Hearing Centre opened its doors to the community of Milton 15 years ago. As the incidence of speech, language, and hearing difficulties continue to rise, our staff of Speech-Language Pathologists, Communicative Disorders Assistants, Audiologists, Hearing Instrument Specialists, and administrative support staff work together to provide services that cater to a wide array of communication disorders. Articulation/ speech sound development, language, literacy, auditory processing, hearing, hearing aid fittings, and counselling are just a few of the many services that we provide. Having a complete diagnostic hearing evaluation is suggested annually at every age. Baby-boomers have now reached retirement age, and are finding they cannot hear as well as they used to – be that from the natural aging process, work-related hearing loss, or from merely having attended too many loud concerts in their younger years. Many people are not even aware that they have hearing loss, because it has happened gradually over the years. The cost of hearing aids, along with the technology in hearing aids has improved so extensively in the past decade that a hearing aid is now compatible with smartphones and other new electronics. We invite you to visit our family-owned clinic. Our friendly, professional staff can answer any questions you may have prior to booking an appointment.
