Although Atlanta prides itself on its ethnic diversity, this is hard to distinguish in the built environment of suburbia. This issue is especially apparent along Buford Hwy just within the perimeter of I-285. Asian Square and Pinetree Plaza characterize the placelessness of suburbia while having ethnic diversity. The thesis aims to articulate and give identity to the community of immigrants which provide the richness and diversity to the environment. This is achieved by defining the edge along the strip of Buford Highway, redefining how people move through/ on/around built space, and incorporating a program which fosters a sense of community and cross-cultural communication/awareness.
