DID YOU KNOW... 1 in 6 men are survivors of sexual abuse - equivalent to 235,500 men across Greater Manchester. It costs £30,000 per week to run We Are Survivors and ensure we are here, whenever survivors are ready, to support them in their healing. Being honest, before I entered the building, I walked around it a few times making sure no one saw me going in, I can call myself a daft bugger but at the time that's what I did. There, in that first hour, my life changed. Talking to someone who understood what I had been through, who understood what I was going through was like a ton weight being lifted from my shoulders. For the first time I wasn't fighting this on my own, I had someone else in my corner. Explanation at last, of what I was going through.

Tom raised £6,576 for We Are Survivors by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro I was abused as a child and it took me nearly 20 years to find the courage to speak to my family and friends about what happened. … During the court case, the team at We Are Survivors really took care of me. From practical advice such as what to expect during the trial to ongoing emotional support, they were with me throughout this process. I decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for We Are Survivors so they can continue to expand their services, which are so desperately needed, but also to encourage other survivors to come forward and report abuse rather than suffering alone and in silence.

Peter donated proceeds from his book to We Are Survivors Survivors helped me recover from many years of sexual abuse when I was aged 9 to 16. One of the many issues that arises out of sexual abuse for me is one of an incredible lack of self esteem. Survivors have helped me over several years to regain a belief in myself. I wanted to give something back … I realised I wanted to write a book… It came to me… I could donate the proceeds. I understood what I could do, and it was like a compass for me, moving me forward. It was an anchor and a goal that helped me get through a really bad period. It was a focus. A way to give back could really help.

Organising a fundraising activity? Remember the 5 W's WHAT Decide on a fundraising activity that will be fun and meaningful to you. Maybe you want to undertake a personal fitness challenge, arrange an event that will bring together friends and family, or do something that links to one of your hobbies like a bake sale or karaoke night.

WHEN Think about when your fundraising activity might take place and how you can maximise

attendance and interest. You might want to avoid dates that clash with major sporting fixtures or national events or link it to a popular community event such as a fete or festival where there will lots of opportunities to promote your fundraising idea.

WHERE Your fundraising idea can take place in your local community, at home, in the

workplace, even virtually. Don’t forget to look for opportunities for local businesses to support you – they might advertise your fundraising activity to customers, offer free services or make a donation.

WHO Your fundraising activity can reach and involve many people - friends, family, work

colleagues – and they can support you in so many different ways, from donating funds and promoting your fundraising activity, to providing a venue, equipment or simply offering lots of moral support! Be confident and pro-active about sharing your fundraising activity and give as many as people as possible the opportunity to support you.

WHY If you feel able to, tell your story: why you are raising funds for We Are Survivors and what makes our work important to you. There is no more powerful way to encourage support.

People will be surprised how many prisoners have been abused and how they suffer in silence, just existing in the system instead of living. Groups and one to one support from We Are Survivors saved my life and the lives of others. They made me feel safe and gave me my voice back. They helped m grow as a person and most importantly they made me realise that it is ok to feel vulnerable in order to strive to be the person I wish to be.

Fundraising tips and tricks. SET A TARGET This will give your fundraising a focus and research shows that

people are more motivated to give if there is a target, so you can raise even more!

SPREAD THE WORD Share photographs, videos and updates of what you

are doing on social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube. Provide regular progress reports if you are training for a fundraising challenge, or building up to an event, always linking to your giving platform (e.g. Justgiving). And make sure you tag @ThisIsSurvivors on Twitter and Instagram and @ThisSurvivors on Facebook so we can share your fundraising updates as widely as possible.

LOOK BEYOND SOCIAL MEDIA Use non-digital opportunities to promote

your fundraising: posters in community hubs or shops, articles in local newsletters or a press release sent to local radio stations and newsletters.

#TEAMWAS Email fundraising@wearesurvivors.org.uk to find out how we can support your fundraising through We Are Survivors merchandise – from t-shirts and collection buckets, to leaflets and banners.

CELEBRATE SUCCESS 20% of donations come in after a fundraising event so

when your fundraising activity is complete, make sure you shout about all that you have achieved – whether online, in local media or simply by telling people in your networks.

THANK YOUR SUPPORTERS Whether a filmed thank you message on social

media, a personalised email or a phone call, a sincere thank you shows how much you value support and what it means to you.

We are so grateful that you are raising funds for We Are Survivors and we want to support you in making sure that, whatever you are doing, it's safe and legal. Here are some things to consider: INSURANCE AND LICENSES As the organiser, you are responsible for ensuring your event or activity is organised efficiently and safely - we can’t accept any liability. You will need to carry out a Risk Assessment to ensure you have plans in place for the safety of your participants. Your Fundraising activity might require a licence, such as Public Entertainment, Sale of Alcohol, Collectors Licence or Sale of Merchandise. There is further useful information on this available here.

RAFFLES Raffles are a fantastic way of raising funds, but it is important to know that some venues are not licensed for or do not allow raffles. Do check with any venue you might be using for your fundraising activity. There is also further guidance here: Fundraising, raffles and lotteries (gamblingcommission.gov.uk)

FOOD HYGIENE If your fundraising activity involves providing food – whether

homemade cakes and biscuits or a slap-up dinner - you must do so safely and hygienically. Allergens should be labelled and it is a good idea to read Food Standards Agency guidance: Providing food at community and charity events | Food Standards Agency

CHILDREN'S SAFETY If children are involved in or present at your fundraising

activity, you must ensure adequate supervision is in place. This includes face painting, obtaining parental / guardian’s permission for the child to take part, obtaining parental / guardian’s permission for the child to have their photo taken, and carrying out appropriate background checks if adults are to have contact with children.

VENUE If you are holding an event in a public place you must inform the Local Council Events Team at least 3 months beforehand for permission.

I have found the therapy sessions at We Are Survivors very helpful and I would go as far as to say life changing. Life changing because before coming to the sessions, I felt embarrassed, ashamed and was constantly doubting myself including punishing myself as I was under mistaken beliefs. I had not voiced to anyone what had happened to me. Today I am able to speak about what has happened to me, I have faced some 'demons' that tormented me and I no longer punish myself for what had happened to me. This would not be possible without the work done over the sessions at Survivors.
