OTI MABUSE BABY JOY

Former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star Oti Mabuse has announced she is expecting her first baby with dancer husband Marius Iepure.

She announced the news on the ‘Oti Mabuse Breakfast Show’ and then shared on her Instagram the sweetest of reels telling her friends and family the impending baby news and their fantastic filmed reactions! (We wholeheartedly recommend checking out @ otimabuse to see the video.)

"Living in a different country as a couple means you don’t have family around to break the news face to face to," she wrote on Instagram.

"And most often friends became family we are so extremely lucky with our group of friends, this isn’t all of them not enough video space but we kept our circle really tight, full of positive energy, laughter and joy," she continued.

Oti also dropped that Christmas is going to be a lot noisier in her house this year - signalling the new addition will be arriving in less than 3 and a half months!

CARSHALTON ROCKS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES

Born and bred in the beautiful village of Carshalton, celebrity journalist Angela Sara West is approaching big names, including ‘Dragon’s Den’ star Theo Paphitis, to assist with her #CarshaltonRocks campaign to help save the Surrey

“My hard-working friend, Clare White, is manager of amazing multi-award-winning card & gift shop Calladoodles, a community-loving indie store on Carshalton High Street. Following in my philanthropic parents’ footsteps – they have both served our wonderful village for decades as past Presidents of Carshalton Rotary - I feel completely compelled to do whatever I can to help Clare and her fellow retail neighbours to keep our coveted high street alive and kicking,” Angela explains.

HARRY’S INVICTUS SHOW DROPS WITH PLENTY OF BOMBSHELLS!

There are more bombshells from Prince Harry’s latest Netflix show with what appears to be digs at the Royals for not being a “supportive structure” during his Afghanistan tours, his mum’s death and subsequent mental health struggles.

Harry divulges in Episode 2 of ‘Heart of Invictus’ on Netflix how he felt emotionally after completing a number of tours in Afghanistan.

"The biggest struggle for me is no-one around me could really help, I didn't have that support structure, that network or that expert advice to identify what was actually going on with me,” he claims.

Later on in the show, Harry talks about the trauma of losing his Mum and how it wasn’t dealt with when he was only 12 and she (Princess Diana) died in that fateful Paris car crash. He claims not talking about his mum’s death - caused the pain and trauma to dramatically resurface after his army tours.

"But the stuff that was coming up was from 1997, from the age of 12, losing my mum at such a young age, the trauma that I had I was never really aware of, it was never discussed, I didn't really talk about it - and I suppressed it like most youngsters would have done but when it all came fizzing out. I was bouncing off the walls, I was like, 'what is going on here? I am now feeling everything as opposed to being numb’” Harry says direct to camera in the explosive episode.

While Meghan Markle appears only fleetingly in the 5-part series she is pictured as a rock to her husband as he battles with nerves ahead of a speech at the Salute to Freedom Gala in New York.

KATIE PRICE PUPPY SMACK

Glamour model Katie Price has landed in hot water for allegedly smacking her new German Shephard puppy, Tank, on one of her Tik Tok videos.

The social media clip saw Katie turning to her dog, getting more and more frustrated after he sat on her clothes. You can noticeably hear a loud “smack” when the dog was off camera.

Price then said, "Isn't it hectic in here, honestly, if you could see... right, get off my jumpers. My jumpers, that I love... get off... Jesus Christ...anyway, as I was saying…."

Despite trying to change the subject her Tik Tok followers weren't happy with what they evidenced, as one asked, "Did she just hit her dog?"

PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk has said, “There is almost nothing more Katie Price could do to cement the fact that she is an unfit dog guardian and an irresponsible person."

It has been reported that 7 of Katie's pets have died in her care since 2017.

SURREY FRILLS WEDDING BLISS

Marie Gibbens, one half of local style trailblazers Surrey Frills married her long-term boyfriend Adam Aaronsson, an acclaimed Surrey-based glass artist, on Friday 25th August in a small intimate ceremony in Bath.

The gorgeous couple are over the moon with Aaron declaring on his social media, “A magical wedding to the perfect bride. Marie you are my everything. Tears of joy as I write this. So incredibly happy. Dancing in the lift, in the street, at the airport, everywhere!”

Marie replied, “Adam, we did it! Married for three days and blissfully happy – hashtagging “man of my dreams!”

Slowly but surely, change is finally underway in the male beauty industry regarding the stereotypes of masculinity, with popular male icons - actor Paul Rudd and singer Harry Styles –seeming to be among the most popular.

In order to determine which are the male celebrities that influence men’s beauty routines the most, Humanery’s experts screened a hundred of them, via Google data analysis. As a result, according to the men’s skincare platform, two different men with two different styles from two different generations, made the grade as world-class skinfluencers – Paul and Harry!

Paul Rudd, aged 53, clearly stands out taking first place in the ranking, with no less than 8,400 annual searches associating the American actor born in 1969 with the term ’skincare’. In second place comes Harry Styles, aged 29 who, for the past few years, has been breaking down many preconceived ideas in the fashion industry, and has even launched his own gender-neutral beauty brand.

He is followed by the British-American actor Andrew Garfield (with 4,800 searches) and the British actor Idris Elba, who just turned 50. David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, John Legend and Brad Pitt complete the

ranking, which is testament to a certain diversity when it comes to skinfluence.

"Our Google study shows that, apart from having great skin, there isn’t one preferred ‘type’ of male celebrity skinfluencer. There is a real mix of ages, skin colours and professions, all encouraging men to up their skincare game. This can only be a good thing, as for years now, more men have needed to take better care of their skin, and if it’s celebrities helping to make that happen, then we’re here for it," explains Thomas Watson, a skincare expert at Humanery.

The study also reveals that searches for ’men’s skincare’ have jumped by 124% in the last three months.

In recent years, several personalities have tried to build on the evolution of masculinity codes by launching their own beauty brands: Harry Styles, of course, with his gender-neutral cosmetics brand called Pleasing, which includes skincare and also make-up, Machine Gun Kelly with a nail polish brand called UN/DN LAQR, and Tyler, The Creator with his Golf Le Fleur line of nail polish and fragrances.

Plus, Botox for men is on the rise too – up 182% since the turn of the century – with many males getting the anti-ageing injections just as they would a haircut these days. Surrey Rocks spoke to Marina at Icon Style Beauty in Cobham who has witnessed an uptake in Botox treatments among her male clients.

“Botox can erase signs of ageing, thereby boosting confidence and mood,” she explained. “Similarly it can open doors for men in their careers and personal lives which can lead to a boost in their quality of life and happiness.”

RECIPE

THAI GREEN CHICKEN CURRY

This deliciously fragrant Thai Green Curry is packed full of flavour and great for any dinner party. To save time you can always double or even triple up the ingredients for the paste and fridge or freeze for other occasions.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 6)

• 750 g skinless free-range chicken thighs

• Groundnut oil

• 400 g mixed oriental mushrooms

• 1 x 400g tin of light coconut milk

• 1 organic chicken stock cube

• 6 kaffir lime leaves

• 200 g mangetout

• ½ a bunch fresh Thai basil

• 2 limes

(For the Curry Paste)

• 4 cloves of garlic

• 2 shallots

• 5cm piece of ginger

• 2 lemongrass stalks

• 4 green Bird's eye chillies

• 1 teaspoon ground cumin

• ½ a bunch of fresh coriander

• 2 tablespoons fish sauce

METHOD

To make the curry paste, peel, roughly chop and place the garlic, shallots and ginger into a food processor.

Trim the lemongrass, remove the tough outer leaves, then finely chop and add to the processor. Trim and add the chillies along with the cumin and half the coriander (stalks and all). Blitz until finely chopped, add the fish sauce and blitz again.

Slice the chicken into 2.5cm strips. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large pan on a medium heat, add the chicken and fry for 5 to 7 minutes, or until just turning golden, then transfer to a plate.

Tear the mushrooms into even pieces. Return the pan to a medium heat, add the mushrooms and fry for 4 to 5 minutes, or until golden. Transfer

to a plate using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the Thai green paste for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour in the coconut milk and 400ml of boiling water, crumble in the stock cube and add the lime leaves. Turn the heat up and bring gently to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes, or until reduced slightly. Stir in the chicken and mushrooms, reduce the heat to low and cook for a further 5 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through, adding the mangetout for the final 2 minutes.

Season carefully to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pick, roughly chop and stir through the basil leaves and remaining coriander leaves. Serve with lime wedges and steamed rice.

WINE MATCH

As a rule, white wines tend to work better than red wines when it comes to pairing with spicy food like Thai, as they have a bit of residual sugar which works to both combat and cool a spicy palate. Our number one choice to accompany this Thai Green Chicken Curry would be a dry Sauvignon from New Zealand or if you want to be experimental you could pick an offdry Kabinett Riesling from Germany which has a drop of lime freshness, with delicate, high-toned flavours to match the bright herbs and green chillies.

‘Saw X’ is coming out on nationwide cinema release on Friday 29th September.

Take a friend (you’ll be too scared to go on your own!) and make sure you don’t park too far away at the cinema car park – this instalment will give you nightmares for weeks!

TENSION - KYLIE MINOGUE

If Kylie’s hit single ‘Padam Padam’ is anything to go by, the release of ‘Tension’ should have us beyond excited for the 22nd September. The lead single has an infectious energy, making it impossible to not be up and dancing and rumour has it we are to expect many more “euphoric, empowered dance floor bangers” from the pintsized pop princess.

Drifting from the industry norm, all 11 tracks and 3 bonus tracks stray from a designated theme. The Aussie superstar wanted to stay true to the heart and fun of her art, starting her journey with “an open mind and a blank page”.

Alongside her mastermind team, (consisting of Richard 'Biff' Stannard, a longtime collaborator, and Duck Blackwell, contributor to her 2020 album ‘Disco’) Kylie explored and celebrated the individuality that each track brought her.

The iconic star was able to dive into the freedom that accompanied and her creative journey has left us with, as Kylie describes it, “a blend of personal reflection, club abandon and melancholic high”.

We can’t wait for ‘Tension’ so we can release some of our own on the dance floor!

‘Pyramid’ is a brilliantly imaginative read that asks us to think about how we ourselves might one day embrace the endless possibilities of AI.

In summary, this is a thought provoking novel from a talented born and bred Surrey girl – well done Paula! that we should all be going out and buying.

Celebrity Journalist Angela Sara West discovers how Australian supermodel, actress, TV host and businesswoman Elle Macpherson has cultivated her “inner goddess”, as the entrepreneur discloses her spiritual hacks, how routines rule, her top tips for top health and how ‘travelling with purpose’ is the key to unlocking new experiences.

Known as ‘The Body’, beautiful model Elle Macpherson has strutted her stuff on worldwide catwalks and graced the cover of many a prestigious magazine.

She has not only enjoyed an illustrious modelling career, but has also been an actress, playing one of Joey’s girlfriends in the phenomenally successful US sitcom ‘Friends’. But her original dream was to be a lawyer. “I thought that Law was a very practical and stable career,” she reveals. “I was pretty good at school and thought that makes sense. But life called me in a different direction..."

She then fell into modelling, which paid for her education. "I wanted to be independent financially," supermodel Elle explains. “I had been at a pharmacy and in a bar, and modelling seemed to pay better. I listened to my heart and took a step towards it and gave it a go to see what it could bring. Ultimately, I started working for financial independence.”

MODELLING DAYS

“I didn’t love modelling,” the supermodel discloses. “But I loved what modelling brought me. I loved creating imagery and I loved art directing and seeing magic come to life. I also adored

the travel. I‘ve had a wonderful career and I’ve enjoyed meeting people and learning different languages. It’s been an incredible education.” She says modelling was more about the doors it opened, rather than the job itself. “It’s about stepping through those doors. Those doors can open if you acknowledge the crossroads in your life, if you lean into your heart and say, ‘I’m going to take a step towards it’. And if it doesn’t feel right, you stand still.”

“I call it intuition,” Elle explains. “It’s a gut feeling, it’s that thing inside you that moves you towards something. You think, ‘Oh, yeah, I’d like to explore that’, and you don’t know why.”

ELLE’S WELLECO

And she’s also sashayed from the catwalk to the boardroom after launching her very own wellness brand. The world-famous supermodel is seriously into serious self-care and is the founder of WelleCo – the original pioneer of nutritional greens and plant-based elixirs created from sustainably sourced ingredients.

“I started my lingerie brand and began to invest in my own business and now I have my WelleCo brand,” Elle enlightens.

“It’s incremental, it takes time,” she says of the leap to owning her own brand. “And it’s about staying the course of what moves your heart.”

What does her wellness brand offer? “WelleCo is an Australian-born, natural, plant-based nutritional brand,” says the supermodel. “We make powders and capsules to elevate your life, because when you are well, you can do anything, and I think when you are well, it shows on your skin. “Hydration and sleep are important, too. And love and laughter,” she adds. “I think a day is wasted without laughter. Laugh with yourself, not at yourself. But we can learn from everything nature has to offer, which is why I have endless books on the subject and surround myself with like minds who also believe in the power of nature. ROUTINES RULE

Her top tips for connecting with ourselves? “Breath, meditation and inner connection are extremely important to me. I like to keep it simple. I’ve found breath practice helps amplify the benefits of all the other daily practises I do. And it’s free and profoundly effective! My daily meditation practice includes 25 minutes in the morning –– either guided or in silence. I aim to be in the natural flow of life as much as possible.”

BEAUTY TREATMENTS – LOOK WITHIN

As for facials, she says, “I believe the best facial is what you put inside your body. If I've got a big shoot or an event coming up and my skin needs a boost, I start juicing four times per day using my friend Dr Sara Siso’s protocol, with lots of turmeric, ginger, garlic, green leafy vegetables, cucumber, and The Super Elixir.”

“I’ll also incorporate The Collagen Elixir to support my skin’s hydration and elasticity. Zoning in on your microbiome is the way to heal from within. I know now to be extremely careful with what I put into my body, treating it from within with quality whole foods so my skin and hair can naturally look their best.”

SERIOUS SELF-CARE

Elle’s favourite essential oil? “Sacred Frankincense and Oud.” While her favourite quote is, “‘Wellness is the new beautiful, health is the new wealth, kindness is the new cool and inner peace is the new success.’”

What’s this sizzling supermodel’s favourite time of day? “Here and now. In the present,” she says. “Of course, there’s nothing quite like sunrise and sunset, when nature puts on one of its unrehearsed, five-star spectacles. Wherever you are, nature’s Broadway show for the senses is hard to beat!”

TRAVELLING TALES

As for her travel tips, speaking on the day of the biggest-ever World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit in Riyadh recently, the sensational

supermodel and entrepreneur says ‘travelling with purpose’ is the key to unlocking new experiences.

“We travel so much for business but travelling with purpose – where you can go to a destination and really be imbued by the culture, get to know the people, break bread with the people –is extremely important,” she explained. WTTC’s highly anticipated Global Summit is the most influential travel & tourism event in the calendar and has attracted nearly 3000 delegates from over 140 countries, including Heads of State, Ministers and CEOs from across the sector.

The supermodel had visited the Kingdom for four days, spending time in the Saudi Arabian capital before the event, and entrepreneur Elle says she enjoyed experiencing Saudi Arabia’s “unbelievably generous” hospitality. She told the 22nd edition of the event’s delegates she had experienced and enjoyed “incredible” food at restaurants across Riyadh while aiming to “really get a feeling of what it is to be here”.

“I see travel as a vehicle for spiritual and personal growth,” said the founder of WelleCo. “We have to adapt and be flexible when we’re on the road, and that’s actually a fantastic skill we need as an entrepreneur.”

Hello and happy September. The last time I wrote for Surrey Rocks the sun was shining and I was filled with anticipation for a Summer filled with plenty of sunshine and alfresco dining. Sadly, due to one of the wettest summers on record, that wasn’t meant to be. Thankfully, I managed to escape to the South of France for a while which, as always, was a feast for the eyes. Back in good old Blighty, and with Summer drawing to a close, now is the perfect time to look ahead to the coming Autumn/Winter season. This year, we see the return of ‘wearable’ fashion, as fast throwaway fashion takes a back seat. Some old classics return through both formal tailored suit styling and more relaxed jeans, shirts and oversized blazer combos. With all the black seen on the catwalks it comes as somewhat of a relief that the must-have colour for this season is red. Always chic, red pairs well with black and shades of white. However, I personally think that red makes for the most glamorous eveningwear, so here are my top pics for glamorous date night dressing.

TOP TIP: My go to nail colour has always been red, I think it looks so effortlessly glam. If you’re sceptical about wearing red clothing then simply try a red nail polish, or lipstick to get this trend into your Autumn styling. My fave lipstick is ‘Tell Laura’ by Charlotte Tilbury. Its warm orangey-red colour is ultramodern and super chic.

WHITE SHIRTS

The classic white shirt has always been a wardrobe staple, but this season they take centre stage. Longer length shirts were popular on the fashion runways, some were as long as floor length. This is a versatile trend that can be worn formally with classic tailoring, or more casually when paired with wide leg denim jeans and an oversized blazer (as the weather gets colder). METALLICS

My favourite trend this season, metallics have been around for a while and show no signs of stopping, at least not for this Season anyway. With a heavy focus on black, it is somewhat a relief to add highlights of gold and silver to our wardrobe. New metallics colours for AW/23 include pink, blue and green! My personal recommendation for this trend is to keep it subtle with accessories, or limit metallics to just one piece in each look.

The last few days of unpredictable weather have given me the perfect excuse to release a favourite wardrobe staple - the leather biker jacket. Leather was all over the runways again for this season, although something new to try for this season is a leather blazer and, if you’re really brave a leather maxi skirt. We started off with Cocktails on the recommendation of our fantastic waitress Keisha – our Editor went for the Tiki-themed Medusa cocktail which came out in a porcelain jug and full of flames with an extra shot of rum in a cut in half passion fruit. It was delicious, infused with cinnamon, Wray and Nephew Kraken Black, Old J Spiced and Havana Run with orgeat, pineapple and passion fruit. Our other guest TV star Bobby Davro went for a Pina Colada and it was made perfectly with a sugar rimmed glass, he was a happy boy! We also went for a selection of Italian breads, served with olive tapenade, olive oil and balsamic – so tasty. For mains there was so much to choose

from. The pizzas are amazing and we know from previous trips so decided to venture off the carb heavy menu. Instead, we went for the Fillet Con Gamberoni Fillet Steak with Butterflied King Prawns with white wine, lemon, garlic and chilli served with crispy french fries. Although we decided to swap the prawns for Lobster Tail for an additional £15 – it was well worth it! The steak was melt- in-the-mouth and cooked perfectly medium rare and the lobster tail had so much meat on it, flavoured garlic and herbs,

it was literally one of the best dishes we have ever tasted! The peppercorn sauce was delicious too.

Bobby went for the Crab Linguini which was presented beautifully and with lots of chilli, garlic, lime, lobster bisque and coriander. The pasta was delicious you can tell it was made that day and cooked perfectly al dente. Hats off to the Spaghetti Tree chef John that we spent an hour talking to at the end of the night! He definitely knows how to cook the finest and most authentic Italian cuisine.

Our amazing mains were washed down with an ice-cold bottle of Whispering Angel. Total perfection. It has to be said

that the staff were all brilliant at the Spaghetti Tree - so attentive, fun and made you feel at ease. The charismatic and utterly beautiful co-owner Maria was there on our trip and she ensures all her guests are having the best time. She chats to everyone! It’s so good to see a restaurant owner caring that much about their customers experience. It’s no wonder singer and TV personality Peter Andre and his family are regular customers.

LIVE MUSIC

A weekend is not complete without some live music in our opinion! Varying in different styles, Spaghetti Tree singers are there every Friday and Saturday night from 9pm till late to get the

weekend party spirit going. Ranging from 90’s, to soul, motown, pop and classic. They really do book the best talent - we had the pleasure of seeing James Dyer on our visit who sang swing and the classics, his voice was tremendous and he got the crowd up and dancing. His rendition of Pavarotti’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ was captivating and was met with a standing ovation. As was Bobby Davro’s impromptu performance of Elton John’s ‘Your Song.’

On Sundays, the Spaghetti Tree have a great lunch menu and have a Sinatra tribute act Ray Lowe performing all the Rat Pack classics while guests enjoy their lunch. Open from midday till 8pm with Sinatra Sunday singer coming on from 3pm.

Plus, every first Saturday of the month there is a Bottomless Brunch where guests can have two hours of unlimited cocktails and a three-course meal for only £60 per person. Incredible deal. Definitely going to check this one out!

Welcome to September. This month always feels like a fresh start to me, a time to reinstate healthy rituals that have slipped over the summer months and an opportunity to focus on your remaining goals for the year. It is also a good time to look at new trends and plan ahead for Autumn. This season there are three key trends that will begin to filter through as the months develop.

The first is the colour copper. Summer was dominated by blondes, as always and the impact of ‘Barbie’ has been huge this season. Now we’re beginning to see a move away from bright blondes to cinnamon-inspired hues. Emily Ratajkowski kick started this with her recent warmer copper tones but Kendall Jenner opted for a similar shade early 2022, and of course, women such as Julianne Moore, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone have been rocking these tones forever. Copper hair can look great on many people and works well with warm undertones in the skin. If your skin has hints of yellow or golden hues, copper hair can enhance

your natural complexion and the warm tones can create a lovely contrast against fair skin or complement a sun-kissed complexion. I would recommend using Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for beautiful colour to keep colour fresh. The gentle products prolong the length of the colour with high-tech ingredients that target damaged areas for an intense moisture treatment that protects your hue from the elements.

And Just Like That…..the bubble perm is back. Even though the season has come to an end, the Carrie Bradshaw effect lives on. Packed with volume from root to tip, the movement of these curls is perfect for those with thin or lacklustre hair. This style works on all hair lengths but the way to create them will vary. Shorter hair will need curlers and longer lengths can use tongs or skinny wands. The secret is not having each section identical in size and curl, but it must run from root to tip. Begin by using a heat protection spray such as KMS ThermaShape Spray and once the curls are cool - run a wide-tooth comb through the hair for a modern, softer look.

If you’re looking to create a little more drama through colour, then speak to us about changing up the placement of colour. While chunkier panels of colours are making a comeback, (think less Geri Halliwell and more, softer sections) it doesn't always need to be vertical. Applying a ‘shine line’ or softer, delicate placements of colour adds depth and interest to any look. Since our last column in Spring, a lot has happened. We have introduced a selection of memberships, including our Clipper Club. We’ve launched our sustainable colour range, celebrated PRIDE, welcomed Jordana back from maternity leave and won ‘Best Hair Salon’ at the Surrey Awards 2023! It’s been an incredible summer for the salon, and we’ve just heard that Jamie Benny, our Artistic Director, has finalised for ‘London Hairdresser of the Year’ at the British Hairdressing Awards. This is a huge achievement for Jamie, in a highly contested category and we’re super proud of him. We are also delighted to announce that Emily Morris, is our first stylist to graduate from our Esher salon. She has worked incredibly hard throughout her time in the salon and we know she’ll be popular with our clients. We took the opportunity for Jamie and Emily to spend some time talking about their journeys at Hare & Bone.

Jamie: I’ve been with HARE & BONE for almost 9 years now. I worked with Sam previously, he mentored me when I was starting out so when he opened his own salon there was no question that I wanted to be part of it. It’s important that assistants are given the opportunities and support required in order to develop their skills professionally.

Emily: I remember joining the Esher team in 2020. A career in hairdressing was something I had always been interested in so when I saw the Hare & Bone brand had opened here, I applied for the assistant’s position. The team have always made me feel so welcome and involved me in all aspects of the industry; from salon work, photographic shoots, local events and even fashion week.

Jamie: Yeah, as an aspirational brand that is involved in the fashion world it’s important that our full team get to experience the opportunities that Sam’s reputation allows us. You should feel really proud to have graduated, Emily. It takes dedication to learn and perfect all the various hairdressing techniques required to work at Hare & Bone. As an aspirational brand, we always need to be offering the very best in professional skills, product knowledge and trends to our clients, but having seen you in action I know you’re ready to take on your own clients.

Emily: Thanks Jamie, that means a lot coming from you! I’ve really enjoyed all my learnings and excited about taking on new clients. I can’t even begin to imagine how it feels to be a finalist at the British Hairdressing Awards. Are you nervous?

Jamie: I’m grateful. But probably will be a little nervous as the weeks go by. We don’t find out who the winners are until the end of November so just now I’m just enjoying the moment and happy that my work has been recognised by my peers.

It’s true, a good place to start when you’re thinking about making the investment is, how will I live with this sofa? Then, according to BoConcept’s interior design experts, size, style and comfort levels are the big three considerations.

“To ensure the right size, you have to know the measurements of the space and how many people are going to use the sofa”, says Héctor Velasco, Interior Stylist. Assess the dimensions of your living space and determine the sofa size that will best fit the room. Take into account the layout and consider whether a sectional or modular sofa would be more suitable for your needs.

For comfort, it is a question of “working on the ergonomics because each person is different”, according to Claire Lempereur, Interior Stylist. “Based on the persons’ size, the height and depth of the seat will be important considerations.” The best way to test this is to try the sofas out, according to Stylist David Edwards: “Try out the sofa we have on display and sit on them like you would at home. If you sit with your feet up, do that in the showroom. If you cuddle into

the arm of the sofa then sit like this too.”

When it comes to style, Héctor Velasco always asks: “Are you looking for a modern sofa or a classic one? Do you want a sofa with a specific design in mind?” Then there’s the fun part of choosing colours and fabrics – which should also be chosen with your family’s lifestyle firmly front of mind. Request fabric swatches, too, to see how they feel in your room.

“The material you choose is key, since it will frame the durability of the sofa”, says Velasco. “Do you want a leather sofa or a fabric one? What type of material is best for your needs and lifestyle? For example, if you have pets or small children, you may want to opt for a fabric that is durable and easy to clean.”

LOUNGE DEEPLY WITH SALAMANCA

“Salamanca is very big, very soft and very comfortable. It’s designed not to live with but to live in”, says its designer Henrik Pederson. “There is no strict system to this bohemian style - play around with the cushions, find your favourite position and chill.”

With freestanding or modular versions

available, the design also allows for customisation and flexibility with the moveable cushions. So how deep does it go? The super soft seats boast a unit depth of 112cm. Keeping with the ‘ultra comfort’ theme, the cushions create a cocooning effect thanks to their composition of 50% feathers.

LOUNGE ELEGANTLY WITH BERNE

Berne combines clean lines with a timeless design, making it a versatile choice for all tastes. It also comes in three sizes – 2, 2.5 and 3-seater options - so works for large and more compact spaces.

Claire Lempereur recommends it for smaller living spaces: “It is a light sofa with simple and elegant lines. Its depth of 85cm allows it to adapt to small spaces”. As for its lounge-factor, David Edwards recommends Berne for those seeking “a more formal seating position with the straight-ish back design”, he says. “Use low rectangular cushions on the base of your back for added seating comfort.”

With its bold cubic shape and generous proportions, the Carmo sofa exudes modern elegance. Don’t be fooled by the straight lines, this sofa is a dream to sit on, too.

Perfectly suited to open-plan living, the open end creates a welcoming atmosphere. However, you need to write about it as if it's actually happening right now. How do you feel, what do you do together and what are you planning next? By doing this, you'll start to believe it's really possible and magic things will happen without actually having to write a wish list!

Tip For your dating wish list....Do look for values that align with yours and don’t look for an exact height, certain style or typical looks you would go for....otherwise this way you will limit your success at finding a compatible partner.

5. LORRAINE ADAMS – ROMANCE EXPERT, COLUMNIST –Tip I’m not a great believer in dating wish lists. I’ve seen how restrictive it can be for my clients to find love when they are holding out for someone possessing very specific things such as certain looks, personality traits, faith and even location or salary bracket. My advice would be to remain completely open, throw away your wish list, especially singles over 40, when the dating pool is going to get significantly smaller as it is!

“Does the future partner we are seeking actually really exist? Or are they just a figment of our own imagination?”

When my matchmaking clients first join the service, they usually bring with them a long list of their ‘must have’ deal breakers or at the very least their nice to have’s. I always liken it to a child going into an icecream shop and after choosing all of the flavours they would like into their carton; they start adding several toppings that rarely complement each other when all combined together.

I’ve come to understand over the many years of coupling people up that much of what we perceive as being our ideal partner actually makes no sense in the real light of day. Just like the child whose eyes glisten with delight over the thought of lemon Sorbet, mixed with chopped nuts and melted chocolate sauce and crunchy honeycomb, often what we distinguish as being crucial personality traits or more surface level aspects do not even go with the territory we have envisioned.

I’ve often been asked to find someone adventurous, a risk taker, someone spontaneous, but in the same breath they will ask for someone reliable, a good timekeeper, a person that gives them a feeling of security. Two completely different personality types that you will rarely find within the same personality.

The longer a person has been unattached, it can be even more challenging to conjure up a realistic description of the type of person they would like to meet. So many people think it is best to throw it all into the pot and just ask for everything.

I have discovered that the most successful formula to finding and achieving real love is to expect and demand nothing. I’ve sat and recorded and made notes of the description of the type of person a new client wishes to meet so many times, only to see months down the line, after careful coaching, seeing the very same client fall head over heels in love with someone completely different to the person they had initially dreamed up inside their head.

The most important qualities to consider in a potential future partner would actually be a combination of their values, their energy aura and their ability to adapt and be flexible. These are sustainable aspects within a relationship. When life throws challenges and curve balls in your direction during your relationship, you will want to feel that you can approach the challenges from the same standpoint as your partner, so your relationship grows stronger as you get through difficulties together. Rather than discovering your values are so unaligned that their reactions and responses are totally alien to yours.

Having a complimentary energy aura is vital, it enables you to grow together long-term. As opposed to one partner always lagging behind trying to keep up. Just like being with an inflexible person who has difficulties adapting to any new situation, you cannot have one half of the couple always having to be the one to adapt.

If a person truly wishes to find real lasting love, the most rapid route is to contemplate eradicating all the more superficial aspects, the height, the dress size, the look, the job, the salary. If you can, try and also coach yourself not to sweat the logistics. If the person lives three hours or more away from you, it is possible for you to work it out, especially if you have found a special connection. Love is not convenient, maybe we prefer someone without children, but if the right person already has children, you’ll adapt and make a plan that suits.

The only way you can really be sure that you are going to find someone attractive is if you actually spend some time with them. It feels like an effort to meet people that do not initially jump out at you, but in the long run it will save you so much time and energy, because you will realise how quickly a budding romance can develop, for all the right reasons. When you do actually fall for someone who is so far off what you expected, even if that romance does not work, it is like a light bulb moment that will actually change the course of your search.

Ask anyone who has been in a long-term relationship if the person they have been in love with all these years, actually measured up to their initial expectations, the answer will definitely be no. Instead, they will tell you of all the extra unexpected things they discovered about their partner, some good and some bad.

September always sees a surge in renovations, the kids are back to school, holidays are over and we need something to get us feeling excited! There is also the looming Christmas season coming into view and the prospect of serious entertaining. We look around our shabby kitchen and dream of something new, more useable, stylish and ideally ready for Christmas. Firstly, is this even possible? Well, the answer to that is completely dependant on the scale of this project and to establish that you need to be clear of the why and the budget!

Why I want A new Kitchen

AUTUMN IS A BRAND NEW KITCHEN!

because there isn't enough space in their current room and the majority of the time that results in a knock through or extension. But sometimes it is that the current layout doesn't work, the flow is wrong or just simply it's old and needs re-doing.

If you are serious about starting this project, then be very clear with the why. For example if the layout of your units aren't working, list out why and what additions and changes you want to make. Research what design styles, colours & finishes you're drawn to & build out a concept or Pinterest board to help you visualise the design direction. And finally be very realistic on how much you have to spend, because that will determine the level of changes you can make. A £5K budget is a cosmetic update, with new doors, cost effective worktop & décor changes, whilst £150K will get you walls knocked down, new units, worktop, floor, appliances & furniture.

The layout

Now surprise, surprise once the why and budget is established, next you need to nail the layout. Even with a cost effective, cosmetic update, there maybe an opportunity to swap units around or add some open shelving. For our Kingston project we did just that. We moved units around to form a centre island, changed the doors and added rustic shelving as part of our design. This allowed us to maximise the budget to the full, so we had more to spend on flooring, wallpaper & furniture. If you are changing your space, sometimes a simple swap around will make the space feel bigger and allow you to get more out of the room. The layout needs to be completely bespoke to your needs and requirements. If you love to cook, then the room will be focused on the right appliances, storage and usability. But if you don't cook but love socialising, you may choose to have less cooking space to make room for a bigger seating space or even a snug zone.

It can be very tempting to leave the design of your kitchen to a kitchen company, but kitchen companies are in the business of selling kitchens, so the more they can sell, the more they can make. Being clear on what you need, will get you a more personal space and could save you money.

The Units

One of the big questions clients ask us is if bespoke joinery is worth it when it comes to cabinets? And I will tell you when it is worth and when it isn't!

If you have an unusual space which needs some out of the box thinking, then bespoke is often the way to go. High-street kitchen companies have set sizes, designs and carcase internals that are then slotted into your space. This means that in unusual spaces you

often have to use filler panels to make the design work. A bespoke design is just that, it is completely bespoke to your space. If you need a 967mm sink unit, no problem that will be fabricated in your colour with your preferred internals.

Where the high-street option works well is in more conventional spaces, if you only want a few straight runs of units, or if this is not your forever home, so you want it to look good but are less bothered about it being tailored to you.

We use both versions in client projects. We have trade accounts with high-street companies so our clients get better pricing options, and we then use our clever design tricks to make the high-street kitchen look incredible.

Here at Sadie Pizzey Interiors we do a lot of bespoke kitchens, and because we design them in house we can use joiners who are competitive with their pricing, opposed to the high end companies who charge a premium. Bespoke allows us to really go to town on the design! Hidden breakfast stations, glitzy cocktail cupboards, slide away larder units, we have designed them all to fit our client's dream wish list.

The Working Parts of the Kitchen

When you are costing out this transformation, don't underestimate the cost of the appliances, taps, & sinks. If you at the lower end of the budget scale, then reuse as much as possible.

The big ticket items are ovens, hobs, fridges & taps and this is where both budget and usage is key to deciding your spend. If you are a big cook, with a larger budget, then investing in multiple ovens that offer steam, built-in microwaves, grills & warming drawers, allows you to cook up a storm. Companies such as Gaggenau have really come up with every possible way of cooking food and streamlined the designs to look incredible. If you are undecided on gas or electric for your hobs, then why not have both with a Japanese hotplate in the middle. Fridges again range from your simple under the counter option to integrated computer software appliances, that tells you when you need to restock.

The kitchen tap has had the biggest upgrade in recent years, every kitchen we've designed in the last three years we've added a boiling water tap, they are a game changer, in both design and usability.

In a nutshell definitely spend on appliances if you love to cook and are designing your forever kitchen, but if this is a cosmetic refresh, reuse and try to stretch the budget to a boiling water tap, they are a game changer!

Top & Floors

Worktops are a place to spend, no matter what the budget! They are the hardest working part of your kitchen, they get chopped on, smeared on and eaten off every day so invest wisely.

So what to go for? Well if you are at the low budget end, then a hardwood top isn't a bad option, but be mindful that the upkeep is a lot! They need to be constantly re-oiled and water areas can easily go black.

At the other end of the scale is my all time favourite, marble. The tones, depth and richness you get from marble can not be compared, with no two slabs coming out the same, it is so unique and individual and it feels amazing. However, it is pretty soft, you need to be careful with it and in my opinion this is not one to have in a house of kids and messy adults (hence why I don't have it!)

Quartz and porcelain are the tops we most commonly use in our kitchens, very hard wearing, with a huge amount of choice in colours and textures they tick all the boxes, but they are in the £1000s budget, not £100s.

We love to combine different worktops to create a more electric design. This also means you can team a practical top in your hardworking parts of the space with a more flamboyant option for your entertaining area. In our recent Guildford project we used a warm white quartz with a bronze vein and then added a liquid metal bronze breakfast bar for some extra magic!

Flooring in kitchens is a big decision. There are really four categories to choose from and they all have pros and cons!

LVT (Luxury, vinyl, flooring), is probably the top option for practicality! It can take anything you throw at it, unscratchable, resistant to UV fade & works well with under floor heating, but also feels warm without. As it is a man made product, there is often a shinny, plastic glare with this choice, but for pets and kids it is a great option.

Wood is the most beautiful choice, but needs a huge amount of upkeep! It dents, scratches and if you are south facing forget it because the fade is inevitable. But the warmth and texture it brings to a space can't compare to any other choice.

Stone or porcelain is a great option due to it's hardiness. A natural stone, such as limestone looks stunning but does need a deep clean & re-sealing every few years, whilst porcelain is man made and looks after itself! Not such a great choice if you don't have under floor heating, as it can be very cold and the grout can be a challenge to keep clean!

Microcement is only really an option if you are building from scratch and are having a concrete substrate. It has a seamless, textured beauty which is unlike any other finish. It is very hard wearing and with no grout lines, incredibly easy to keep clean. It is, however, expensive and is harder to achieve in an existing space.

Eating & Relaxing

The seating zone in your kitchen should reflect how you like to enjoy meal times. We have had clients who want to seat 16 at a table and make this zone the main feature of the room, but we have also had clients who favour eating at a kitchen island with a few friends.

Where and how you feature this zone will impact how much of the space is used. In our large projects we centre the table with impactful feature pendants and upholstered dining chairs. Where as in our compact homes we use clever space saving design, such as banquette seating or even extending the kitchen island into a dining table.

Seating at an island is very common and if you have kids and a busy household, throwing bowls of cereal across the island or perching on a stool to grab a sandwich has great advantages! What stage in life you are also will impact the choice of stool, my kids were three and five when we did our kitchen so I wouldn't have dreamt of having beautiful, upholstered stools, but now they are older and so am I, I would love to change them to a softer option with back support!

Some of my older clients also flag the importance of being comfortable and supported with their seating choices, swinging around on a rotating wooden stool is fun in your 20's but less fun in your 50's!

Most clients have a snug zone on their wish list. The ability to have a comfy space to enjoy your morning coffee, share canapés with friends or retreat to after a big night is a brilliant addition to your home. Your early work listing out priorities and drawing up layouts, allows you decide if and where you want to locate this zone. When we are designing a space, our preference is to locate the relaxing zone to enjoy the view of the garden. The space is tailored to our clients preferences, so sometimes we integrate TV's or fires or add further joinery with ambient lighting.

The Va, Va Voom

The va va voom is what takes your kitchen to the next level! Yes, cabinetry is great, worktops lovely but the Va Va Voom items are what makes your space special!

So what are these Va Va Voom items you ask? Any decorative

addition or feature that takes your room to the next level. Whether that's lighting, artwork, wall finishes, furniture, you decide! They can also be a way of disguising a design challenge. For example in our recent Guildford project the best layout for the space resulted in a wall of doors, not particular attractive to look at, but necessary for the success of the design. This design challenge resulted in one of the biggest Va Va Voom moments in the house, a wall of incredible cork, cladding the walls and all the doors so they disappeared and became magical doors!

We have achieved equal success with lighting, by adding large, statement pendants over a table or island. Wallpaper is another item to play with. Most people assume wallpaper equals strong colours and patterns, but we've made huge impact with textured, rich coloured wallpaper, that draws you in and leads your eye into the space. Your concept and layout will lead you to these Va Va Voom moments and making sure you manage the budget allows you to achieve them.

SKIN TIGHTENING & REJUVENATION

I often say that the key to young-looking skin is tightness. Skin tightening is always at the forefront of my work and I’m always looking for the best science-based methods to attain this for my beautiful clients. Skin laxity (or saggy skin) can be the product of UV exposure, sun damage, weight loss, ageing and hormone level changes.

As we get older, we lose collagen and elastin in the skin which in turn impacts firmness and can leave the skin looking crepey or saggy. This can affect our confidence and the clothes we choose to wear. Thankfully, with the advance of anti-ageing aesthetics, there are a plethora of cuttingedge treatments available to everyone, not just celebrities.

These threads are so wonderful that I have nicknamed them ‘the little superheroes of the anti-ageing industry’. They are the most exciting skincare innovation of the decade. PDO threads (known as polydioxanone) are completely absorbable sutures that lift, tighten and rejuvenate the skin. I have created my own signature PDO techniques that deliver incredibly youthful results. I use threads to create a supportive scaffolding that lifts and tightens the skin. The PDO threads gradually dissolve within the skin causing the production of YOUR OWN natural collagen. This enhances the tightening effect over

time and reduces the appearance of crepey or wrinkled skin. I love that they are made from a biocompatible material that has been used in surgery for years. HOW DID IT ALL GO RIGHT FOR THE TEAM BEHIND ‘PETER PAN GOES WRONG’?

There’s such a need to laugh at the moment - which is why now is the perfect time for a nationwide tour of ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’. When talking to the team that turned mishap into a fine art, there's a question that inevitably comes up: has anything ever actually gone wrong? Jonathan Sayer, Henry Shields and Henry Lewis, who together form the core creative team of Mischief, have been causing mayhem for more than a decade now. Their success started with ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’, which grew from a short run in a pub theatre in 2012, where they had to lean against the set to stop it from accidentally falling over, to conquering the West End, Broadway and the whole of the UK, with productions playing in every continent (except Antarctica!).They've also had huge success with ‘The Comedy About a Bank Robbery’, ‘Magic Goes Wrong,’ two series of ‘The Goes Wrong Show on TV’, countless improv nights, a podcast and, of course, ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’, in which the hopeless Comley Drama Society attempt - and hilariously fail - to stage a production of J.M. Barrie's classic. Their shows are full of slapstick humour and carefully choreographed disasters, but so many shows over such a long period of time has inevitably meant that there have been occasional unscripted accidents, too.

So as ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’ sets off on a UK tour, the team remember one particularly hilarious moment. “At the end of act one there's a moment when Pan falls from the sky because his wire has snapped,” says Lewis. “The way we do it is that the actor flies out, then a dummy dressed in the same clothes falls down to create the illusion. During one performance, they were

doing a scene in the nursery where Pan is talking to Wendy and suddenly the dummy dropped. Pan said the immortal line, “Ignore that, that's not me. That's the other, dead Pan.”

Sayer adds: “If that dummy drops, that's it, the game's up. There's little you can do on stage, you can't just sidestep it.”

It's been a very Peter Pan year for

the trio. As well as the UK tour which kicks off in September in Richmond, which they promise has “a fantastic cast”, they have just been performing the show on Broadway - where it was nominated for eight awards - and are now in LA for a run at the Ahmanson Theatre.

A few days earlier, Shields and Sayer were watching a grainy recording they made of the show's very first run in a tiny theatre in London in 2013. “That was a really stark reminder of how far we've come,” says Shields. “There are lots of bits in the recording that are in the show now on Broadway, but there's also so much that's changed and evolved over time.”

WHEN THEY'RE STANDING ON A BROADWAY STAGE OR CASTING A NATIONAL TOUR, DO THEY EVER TAKE A MOMENT TO THINK ABOUT THE PROGRESS THEY'VE MADE IN THE LAST DECADE?

“If you spend a lot of time looking at what's happened,” says Sayer, “then you'd probably take your eye off the ball a little bit. But there's enough water under the bridge to notice the water a

little bit more. There are landmarks that creep in, like recognising that ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’ premiered a decade ago, and when you do take stock it's such a lovely surprise.”

And actually their Broadway run marked the first time the three of them had done something together in a while. “The thing that I've been reminded about is just how much laughter there is every single day,” says Sayer. In the meantime, they've each been working on individual projects. Lewis has taken the role of the Riddlemaster on ITV quiz show ‘Riddiculous’, as well as directing a show written by Shields called ‘Good Luck, Studio.’

“The longer we've done Mischief, the more important it's been to do other bits and bobs outside,” Lewis explains.

“Mischief is an amazing thing, and I do genuinely love it with all my heart, but it's also quite intense. We've all known each other for a long time, we're friends as well, so it's been interesting to go and do these other bits and bobs and bring those learnings back into Mischief.”

Sayer agrees. “It's good to be a fully rounded person. A big part of my

personality is that I really like sport and community events so it's been good to find a home for that.”

For now, though, they're focusing on the adventures of Peter Pan and Wendy and, as Lewis explains, it's the perfect time for the show.

“It's all about not growing up and making life an adventure and laughing through it. I think that's a message at the moment that really resonates. For Sayer, “There's such a need to laugh at the moment. Post-pandemic it has a kind of profundity to it that didn't exist beforehand. There's a need for silliness now, whereas before people would have just thought 'that's nice'. Right now, people could really do with some total nonsense, silliness and joyousness for a couple of hours.”
