Hello Surrey,
Welcome to the May Issue of Surrey Rocks Magazine where we bring you an abundance of food, fashion, festivals and fun.
Surrey has a plethora of the best restaurants catering to every tastebud imaginable. In our Gastonomy Special, we visited the award-winning Spaghetti Tree in Warlingham where our tester remarked of being “transported to a magnificent corner of rustic Italy” in their 5 Star, culinary experience.
Next up, was Gordo’s in Guildford, a fitting homage to the owner’s exotic travels around Mexico, experiencing the colourful culture deeply rooted in gastronomy; from street food to centuries-old recipes passed down through the generations. And last, but by no means least, the Crown & Pepper in Caterham has the most stunning and impressive Indian and Chinese menu with over 60 gastronomical delights to choose from. You will be mightily impressed… as we were.
Race Day Fashion for Royal Ascot, Epsom Derby & Henley Regatta is also catered for on pages 22-25 as well as the latest fashion finds for men/ women and their stylish “fur babies” at ‘House of Poochie’ in our May fashion shoot. In addition, Surrey Rocks’ stylist Louise Scotland shows us six, seriously good investment pieces that will transform your wardrobe, whether it be an epic pair of Botegga sunglasses or the dreamiest of Zimmermann midi-dresses, we have you covered on pages 104-106.
Plus, we catch up with the legendary KT Tunstall for our exclusive ‘60 Second Interview’ on turning 50 this year and appearing at Guilfest; it’s a great and informative read. And do not forget to make your voice heard and vote for your favourite Surrey businesses in the Surrey Awards 2025, as voting closes on May 5th ahead of the star-studded, gala dinner at G Live on May 15th - with Surrey’s business elite and stellar performances from Boney M, Reef and Dub Pistols. The Hailey Bieber/Selena Gomez saga continues. Hailey went on stage to collect an award for her make-up brand, Rhode, and delivered almost exactly the same speech as her husband’s ex flame Selena Gomez did 4 years before.
As Hailey accepted the ‘Beaty Innovator of the Year’ award she said, “I didn’t want to start a brand for the sake of starting a brand.”
Social media went into overload following the acceptance speech with fans saying: “Does Hailey have a personality of her own?!” Another commentator left the brutal remark, “creepy stalker copycat.”
A Tik Tok has gone viral comparing the two beauties speeches with hilarious consequences. The news comes a month after Hailey and Justin were accused of copying Selena and her fiancé Benny Blanco following a Disneyland date.
Justin Bieber (Hailey’s husband) was the long term partner of Selena Gomez from 2010 to 2018.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have issued a new photograph to mark their 14th wedding anniversary during an official visit to the Isle of Mull in Scotland.
The photo shows the couple with their arms around each other as they take in the spectacular scenery. The image, posted on the couple's social media account, comes with a beautiful
"Wonderful to be back on the Isle of Mull. Thank you to everyone for such a warm welcome."
They signed off with a love heart emoji and "W & C" for William and Catherine. They toured the Isle of Mull over two days, visiting community halls that their Foundation is helping to refurbish.
Dynamic girlband Remember Monday anthemic new single 'What The Hell Just Happened?', is this year’s UK entry for this year's 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland.
'What The Hell Just Happened?' showcases the band at their best, highlighting their bubbly character, joyful harmonies and melodies. It's a pop track brimming with fun and infectious energy, a dancefloor-filler that relatably narrates a raucous night out with friends.
Made up of best friends Charlotte, Holly and Lauren, Remember Monday are seasoned performers and are all based in Surrey. Since first meeting in the sixth form at Farnborough College, they have gone from strength to strength, regularly appearing on the music festival circuit, and last year the band embarked on their first sellout UK wide tour. They first shot to fame in ‘The Voice’ in 2019 when they were coached by Jennifer Hudson.
The girls said, “They say Eurovision is "the music World Cup and we'll do our best to bring it home!"
The Grand Final for Eurovision takes place on Saturday May 17th. Do us proud girls!

Gents, May is the month to start thinking about your “Race Day Wardrobe” with Royal Ascot in May, Epsom Derby in June and Henley Regatta in July. There are an abundance of suits on the market that our stylist has picked to keep you looking race day ready whatever your budget. Ranging from the cheaper end of the spectrum with ASOS Design’s skinny suit in powder blue with waistcoat from only £85.00 and River Island’s navy blue stretch fit suit, shown here for £105.00.
We also fell in love with Rodd & Gunn’s Cascade double breasted suit jacket from David’s of Haslemere priced at £350.00. This is a wardrobe staple you will wear again and again made from a rich wool-linen blend that is woven in Italy, featuring a lightweight and textured hopsack weave.
On the more pricier end of the scale, Gucci are offering a navy blue poplin suit jacket and trousers for £2400 from the SS/25 Ready To Wear Collection. However, if high street and designer looks off the rack are not your thing and you prefer a more signature look for sleek and stylish attire that no one else would have, we highly recommend you take a look at Howard & Co Attire’s “Mix & Match” signature stylist enquiry form on their website to help with creating your ultimate race day suit.
With fitted trousers, standout waistcoats, all the accessories from shirt, ties, pocket squares, jewellery and more to add to your stylish blazer. They have a variety of clients including many in the celebrity world that have chosen to come and be fitted by the award-winning brand including Boxer Idris Virgo and ‘Love Island’ star Chris Hughes as pictured here.
To add a touch of personality, you could opt for subtle yet statement accessories, like a bold tie or pocket square, or even a stylish lapel pin. The key is to strike a balance between elegance and individuality while keeping in mind the formality of the event.
Prices start from £200.00 and go up to £499.00 if you go for the full suit, jacket, waistcoat and accessories.
May is the month to start planning your “Race Day” wardrobe. With Surrey events including Royal Ascot at the end of May, Epsom Derby on the first weekend of June and Henley Regatta, the first week of July, these events always calls for sleek and stylish attire and Ladies Day hats to get you noticed and papped.
The key is to strike a balance between elegance and individuality while keeping in mind the formality of the event.
One of our favourite looks was from the latest Dolce & Gabbana Women’s SS/25 Collection. A Chiffon midi dress with smock stitching and micro-polka dot print at £3,800. Floaty and dreamy – perfect for race day events.
A signature suit for such occasions would typically feature sharp tailoring, perhaps in a classic colour like charcoal, navy blue or powder blue.
A short or mid-length dress would look stunning too. We fell in love with this Ralph Lauren blue cape dress a snip at £279. And silk is always a winning look. Go for a cream silk skirt like this one from Arrange with a knit drop waist, on ASOS for £140. Or go for a showstopping red dress like this calf length New Look satin number embossed with floral detail for only £39.99.
Going to be mother of the bride this year? Heading to Royal Ascot, Epsom Derby or Henley Regatta and need that special piece to finish off your look? We highly recommend
you visit and take a look at Mizi Atelier’s signature stylist enquiring form online to help with this.
Mizi Atelier is dedicated to crafting exquisite, bespoke pieces that resonate with sophistication and style for a diverse range of occasions, such as weddings, the races and other elegant events. Find them on stand G24 at Ascot Fashion Weekend, Friday 23rdSunday 25th May.
Rotolo is a really unusual pasta dish. It takes a little longer than some other pastas, but it’s worth the effort because it’s such a joy to eat – a real showstopper if you want to turn heads this month. This Jamie Oliver recipe takes two hours to make but it’s a simply delicious vegan/vegetarian option that the whole family will enjoy. Serves 6.
INGREDIENTS:
• 450g fresh egg pasta dough
• ½ a butternut squash
• olive oil
• 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
• ½ a dried red chilli
• 1 handful of fresh marjoram or oregano
• 2 cloves of garlic
• 800g spinach
• 250g unsalted butter
• 1 whole nutmeg, for grating
• 150g crumbly ricotta cheese
• 50g Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
• 20 fresh sage leaves
METHOD:
1. First make your egg pasta dough. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7.
2. Halve, deseed and chop the butternut squash into big chunks and rub them with a little olive oil. Bash up the coriander seeds, fennel seeds and chilli in a pestle and mortar with a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Dust this mix over your pieces of squash, then put them into a snug-fitting ovenproof dish or roasting tray, covered with a dampened piece of greaseproof paper. Pop the tray into the oven for about 30 minutes, then remove the paper and let the squash roast for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden. While this is cooking, pick the marjoram or oregano leaves, discarding the stalks, and peel and finely slice the garlic. Get a large pan nice and hot and add a little olive oil, the herb leaves and
sliced garlic. Move it all around for 20 seconds, then add the spinach.
3. Water will cook out of it as it heats up – this is fine, though, as we will cook it away. Using a pair of tongs, keep the spinach moving quickly around the pan, then after a minute add a couple of knobs of butter and a good grating of nutmeg and stir it around a bit more. Keep cooking until the moisture has cooked away then season to taste and allow to cool. To roll out your pasta either use a pasta machine to give you 4 or 5 long sheets (15cm x 30cm wide) and stick them together using a little water, or you can do what I do and use a rolling pin on a large surface, dusting with flour on top of and underneath the dough. Have a go at both ways. Keep it in a rectangular shape but trim it as necessary. Roll out to the thickness of a beer mat and the size of a tea towel, then lay it out on top of a clean tea towel.
4. Once you’ve done this, spoon a line of squash along the long edge of the sheet nearest you. Sprinkle the spinach over the rest of the sheet,
leaving the top 5cm of the pasta sheet clear. Crumble the ricotta over the spinach, finely grate over the Parmesan and you’re ready to begin rolling!
5. Brush the last clear edge of the pasta sheet with a little water then, working carefully, use the nearest edge of the tea towel to roll the pasta up and away from you, like a Swiss roll. Roll the rotolo up in the tea towel and tie it firmly at each end using some string. You can secure the sausage shape even further by tying some more round the middle if you want. Tie a little extra string at one end so it can hang out of the cooking pot and act as a handle.
6. Now, to cook the rotolo, get your fish kettle or very large pan with a lid and fill it with boiling salted water. Lower the rotolo in and use the fish kettle rack on top to keep it submerged. If using a saucepan, hold the rotolo down with a plate. Simmer for about 25 minutes.
7. While it’s cooking, you need to clarify some butter. To do this, take the remaining butter and place it in an ovenproof dish in the oven on a low plate-warming temperature (80°C). Over the next 10 to 15 minutes it will melt and you’ll see that the milky whey will sink to the bottom. Discard any white bits floating on the top, then spoon out the clear golden butter and put to one side. Discard the whey. You won't need all the butter now, but it's quite hard to clarify any less than this - you can leave the extra in the fridge to use for your roast potatoes another day.
8. Now you've removed the whey from the butter, you can heat it up more aggressively. So put about 3 tablespoons of your clarified butter into a pan and heat it up. Test to see if the butter is hot enough by adding a sage leaf to it. If it fries nicely, add the rest of the leaves and fry for about 30 seconds until they begin to crisp up. Then remove from the heat and put to one side.
9. When the rotolo is ready, carefully remove it from the pan, take the string off, unroll it and slice it up - a couple of slices per portion.
10. Scatter a few sage leaves over the top, drizzle with a little of your sageflavoured butter, and finish off with a grating of Parmesan. Unbelievable!
Miley is back with her ninth studio album on May 30th released through Sony Music’s Columbia Records.
Miley said that ‘Something Beautiful’ was inspired by Pink Floyd’s 1979 critically-acclaimed album ‘The Wall’ and it contains 13 tracks, mixing experimental rock with psychedelic pop.
The album begins with the brilliant track ‘Prelude’ a spoken word song accompanied with electronic instruments, the title track ‘Something Beautiful’ is stunning and fuses jazz and soul influences.
There is also a disco-inspired track called ‘End of the World’ which Miley teased with an excerpt of the accompanying video on her website.
Interestingly, the soul and tone used in Miley’s voice during this album is so different from every era of hers so far, critics are hailing this new offering as one of her best yet.
‘Something Beautiful’ is executive produced by Cyrus and the six-time, Grammy awardwinning Canadian producer Shawn Everett.
The album is supported by a musical film of the same name set to be released on June 6th at the 2025 Tribecca Festival.
The reported last film in the popular ‘Mission : Impossible’ franchise aims to deliver a fitting conclusion to Ethan Hunt's saga, combining high-octane action with deeper thematic explorations such as threat of Advanced AI.
Continuing the narrative from the 2023 film ‘Dead Reckoning Part One’, Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) faces a new adversary: a rogue artificial intelligence known as The Entity.
The film delves into themes of technology, control and the ethical dilemmas posed by advanced AI, echoing concerns about the potential dangers of such entities.
With its blend of thrilling stunts (most of which are performed by Cruise himself without the aid of stunt doubles!), compelling narrative and impressive visuals, the eighth film is poised to be a standout conclusion to the franchise.
‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14th, before its global release on May 23rd in all cinemas. A great end to a superb franchise of movies.
‘Mission: Impossible’ is definitely going to be missed after this final outing!

Football and popular culture are two of the most avidly followed genres by a huge swathe of the world's population, which is why 'Buzzing with the Bees from Brentford to Hollywood' is such a compelling read.
Marcus Hamilton-Gibson's autobiographical book centres around his life-long love for Brentford Football Club in West London and realising his thespian ambitions which has seen him perform on the West End stage and various other productions globally.

Living costs are rising by while in retrospect your quality of life is supposed to be decreasing. We debunk this myth with our indispensible guide on how to save smart without giving up your lifestyle. According to a recent Money Plus Survey, over 90% of people feel they have been impacted by changes in the cost of living, from housing affordability to energy bills and grocery prices. With the ongoing crisis, cutting costs does not necessarily have to mean cutting joy. It is still possible to maintain a fulfilling lifestyle even with the occasional luxury.
Surrey residents Amanda Taylor and Shad Khan share their personal experiences as well as the practical changes that help them save money. Their stories and our exclusive money saving tips will help you take better control of your finances and enjoy bigger luxuries in life.
Amanda, a 67-year-old retired nurse from Surrey, has returned to part time work to stay afloat. Her water bills have increased by 42% while gas and electric has risen by 6.4%. She says she keeps the heating off all day and only puts it on when her granddaughter gets back from school.
Amanda and her family are saving money in several ways: they take showers instead of baths, have installed an energy-efficient boiler, a washing machine that costs just 35p per cycle, and an energy-efficient tumble dryer.
“We really think about what we are going to eat before we go to the shop too,” Amanda adds. “It is mostly porridge for breakfast as it is quick, easy, cheap and actually quite nice.”
Amanda’s state pension has increased by £34 per month; however, her council tax has risen by an even greater amount, leaving her no better off financially. The same is the story of many households, especially those with families.
Shad Khan, a father and assistant service manager in the NHS, also feels he’s saving less due to rising costs of bills, food, and everyday household expenses.
“The cost of living in the UK is too high and wages are not in line”, explains the father of one.
For Shad, saving means to sacrifice on family holidays and trimming down on luxuries. He is also concerned about the recent government implementations surrounding ISA Reforms of April 2025, including the abolition of the pension lifetime allowance.
It feels impossible for Shad to save long term under these circumstances.
Surviving today’s economy means cutting down and making multiple sacrifices. But, the true question lies…. can we still save money and afford a comfortable lifestyle with the odd few luxuries?
Sure, we can and here’s our list of top tips, exclusively for you:
• GET TO GRIPS WITH BUDGETING: Firstly, track your monthly expenses and start by creating a realistic budget plan for the month. Try and put a certain amount directly in savings if possible, even if it is just £20. This can later be used as your emergency fund or any luxuries you would like to save for. There are many budgeting apps that can help you, for example, YNAB, PocketGuard or EveryDollar.
• EFFICIENCY WITH ENERGY BILLS: Look into buying energy efficient machinery for your household – they cost more upfront but save long term. Set up a smart meter to see what is using most energy. If possible, set up a timer on the radiators and other appliances, so that they are not being overused unnecessarily. Did you know that putting on your washing machine at night costs much less than running it in the day? Check with your energy provider on the latest tariffs.
• EATING OUT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A LUXURY: Look out for weekday offers, two for one deals or vouchers. www. moneysavingexpert.com is a great site that regularly updates restaurant vouchers as well as our very own Surrey Rocks monthly Calendars - which tell you which local establishments are offering those all-important, money saving deals. See www.rocksmag. com/surrey for more information.
• GROCERY SHOPPING: Always shop with a list that is focused on essentials rather than wants. Do not forget that different grocery stores have their own discount apps and they do make a difference in the total sum of your bill. For example, Lidl offer 10% off your next shop when you hit a £250 monthly target. Single home owners? Shop with friends and share QR codes to get in on the action.
• AFFORDABLE EXPERIENCES AND DAYS OUT: www. groupon.co.uk and www.wowcher.co.uk offer great deals and vouchers for day outs such as theme park visits, cinema trips or weekend breaks. There are also many group offers available if you are looking to plan something with family and friends. Sometimes, even a budget friendly picnic in the park can be a wholesome day out. Look out for Rocks VIP launching soon that also offer great discounts on Surrey Rocks advertiser venues!
• FASHION LOVERS: If you are looking to maintain a luxury lifestyle and enjoy some designer shopping, then why not buy goods second hand? There are great known sites and apps such as, www.vestiairecollective.com, luxecollectivefashion. com and www.vinted.co.uk. These sites are not only well-known platforms with original designer goods, but they are also an opportunity for you to make some side money by selling some of your pre-loved goods. Or maybe try renting dresses for a big night out? Surrey based brand Monice London has just launched this service! Perhaps you could invest the money you save in a new item or if not save it for a holiday or to put towards those ever-increasing energy bills we cannot avoid!
• SELL UNWANTED ITEMS: There are multiple sites, such as www.ebay.co.uk, ww.vinted.co.uk and www.gumtree.com that allow you to sell any unused or unwanted items in your home. Make some extra money and use it for something valuable. Ebay have just started offering zero fees on fashion items that are unworn/new with tags too. Or Facebook Marketplace have zero charges and no postage as buyers pop round and pick up the items you are selling at a time convenient to you!
• PLAN HOLIDAYS LIKE A PRO: Plan and book holidays in advance for best deals possible. Travelling off-peak is cheaper, but if you have school children, the holidays can be a lot pricier. You can look into budget friendly options, such as travelling with public transport or considering best flight deals on skyscanner.net. It may also help considering a three star hotel rather than five stars, since that can make a considerable price difference. Airbnb’s are also sometimes cheaper and worthwhile for bigger groups or families. Carefully plan and consider different destinations, sometimes it is cheaper to plan a trip inland.
• MODEL BEHAVIOUR: become a model for the day. Most hair salons and beauty clinics offer model discounts of up to 70% if you are willing to try out a new stylist/clinician or allow the use of pictures of your new “before” and “after” pictures as promotion on their websites or social media accounts. Looking good does not have to cost big bucks. See Natasha at EQlibrium in Weybridge for beauty modelling opportunities!
• STUDENT DISCOUNTS: If you are a student, you have many available discounts at your disposal. Check with your bank, for example HSBC offers an exclusive student account with different offers. Sign up to websites such as www.studentbeans.com, www.myunidays.com and www.totum.com. Students receive special offers be it shopping, eating out or online portals such as Amazon. And most high street retailers offer 10% off purchases with a valid Student ID Card.
• SAVINGS ACCOUNT: It is questionable whether saving today is even possible, but it is beneficial looking into a savings account with a good interest rate. Revolut’s easy access account currently offers the best paying rate in the UK at 5%. Also signing up to a new bank account or being referred to by a friend can net you a cool £50 with online bank Tide or £100 with a high street bank like HSBC.
• CANCEL UNUSED SUBSCRIPTIONS: Make sure that you are not paying for any subscriptions you have forgotten about and are not using at all. You would be surprised to see how much these small charges add up over time. Keep check and control of the money that is going out from your bank accounts. Or maybe look to move to a family or group subscription with friends/ family, by going in with 5 others on Netflix or Spotify you can reduce your personal individual subscription charges saving over £100 a year.
It is not required for you to give up on your lifestyle or luxuries with a few technical tools, planning and budgeting, you can enjoy your life to the fullest. All you need to do is be smart with your money. Whether it is making your porridge feel like a win or bagging a designer deal second-hand - financial freedom is more possible than you think.

At Jonathan Rowlandson Design we have provided a unique design and build service for a range of clients for over 20 years. With an emphasis on innovative, contemporary design solutions we have risen to the challenge of every project, interior or exterior. Combining our unique approach to metal items with wood, glass, stone, and other materials. At JRD we offer a range of furniture items including the Otolo range. We also design and produce items sympathetic to their environment, be it a rustic bar restaurant with an artisan feel – normally providing seating, counters, bars, lighting, signage, etc. such as Dog Star Brixton – or one-off sculptural items such as the tables for Vivienne Westwood. Our inspiration will often come from the clients’ desires, as well as tapping into nature and art to find a suitable solution. Hardly any 2 projects are the same, we continue to provide new and hopefully better designs.

We were blown away with our recent review of the Crown & Pepper, a hidden gem of a restaurant located in the heart of Caterham. The venue is bright, airy, fun and buzzing with ultra cool decor, a 10 foot neon lit bar, gorgeous flower walls and ample seating for well over 90 guests. Book in early to avoid disappointment though as those 90 seats are snapped up pretty quickly! And we can see why. The Crown & Pepper Caterham has the most stunning and impressive Indian and Chinese menu with over 60 gastronomical delights to choose from.
Trying to sample as much as we could, we jumped on the ‘Chinese Sharing Platter’ so we got a bit of everything. The ‘Satay Chicken Skewers’ were delicious, plentiful chunks of marinated chicken breast served on skewers with a peanut dipping sauce. The ‘Sesame Prawn Toast’ was crispy and sizeable while the Spring Rolls were packed full of delicious veg and the pork ribs with BBQ sauce were so succulent they literally fell off the bone. A 5 Star introduction to the Crown & Pepper Caterham!
We also went for the ‘Salt & Pepper King Prawns’ and they were absolutely fantastic; large, succulent king prawns with plenty of garlic and cut up chillis to add a hint of spice.
We were impressed with the amount of drink choices and amazing offers at C&P too. For example, everyday between 5pm and 7.30pm and Thursdays all night you get 2 Cocktails for £11.50 or 2 Mocktails for £6.50. Having heard wonderful things about the Cocktails at Crown and Pepper - we dived straight in.
One of our reviewers went for the delicious ‘Bubblegum Daquiri’ which was so lovely and refreshing - apparently akin to a Raspberry Slush Puppy (but with a kick!) while the other went for a ‘Lychee Martini’ - a baby pink cocktail that was sweet with vanilla vodka and lychee syrup but still packed a punch. While we opted to have our meal in the main restaurant, as it was a hot day we enjoyed our cocktails in C&P’s idyllic, picturesque beer garden - we couldn’t have wished for a more wonderful way to kickstart our review.
Giving a taste of India a chance for the Main Course we opted for the C&P firm favourite, ‘Chicken Tikka Masala.’ The slow-cooked chicken breast chunks were served in a delicious rich spicy, tomato and coconut-based sauce, served with saffron-infused Pilau Rice.
To accompany our testers went for a ‘Saag Aloo’ (a traditional Indian spinach &
potato dish) and ‘Keema Naan’ (naan bread filled with minced spiced beef). We also went for ‘Lamb Madras’, a traditional South Indian dish cooked in a special spice, mustard, and coconut sauce. This was all washed perfectly down with an ice-cold pint of draught Stella, which is one of the 10 draught lagers available at C&P alongside their impressive array of spirits.
Reverting back to the Chinese part of the Menu we went for the ‘Szechuan Chicken’ which was another firm favourite with our testers. It was presented beautifully with large, succulent chicken breast pieces coated in a crispy batter, drizzled in a spicy, Szechuan sauce.
We also went for the ‘Crispy Chilli Beef’ which was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crisp in the tastiest of sweet, sticky sauces – a perfect taste explosion. We couldn’t not test the ‘Special Fried Rice’ after glancing at the dish on a neighbouring table! This contained an abundance of pork, chicken, shrimps and vegetables and went perfectly with our Chinese Mains.
If Indian or Chinese cuisine is not your thing, you can sample the ‘Best of British’ with delights including Chicken Burgers, Beef Burgers, Gourmet Fries, Fish & Chips, Wholetail Scampi and Chicken Nuggets. Perfect for the little ones!
While we were too full to sample desserts this time round, we were mightily impressed with the options. The ‘Ferrero Rocher’ and ‘Cadburys Flake’ ice-creams gave a nod to the tasty chocolates with infused ice-cream flavours, lashings of chocolate sauce as well as chocolate Ferrero Rocher or Flake on top. Yum.
There is also Strawberry Cheesecake, Strawberry Flutes or Coconut Supreme and for the little ones a cutely named ‘Egg Man’ strawberry and vanilla ice-cream in a plastic egg man cup with a fun, toy surprise.
Crown & Pepper Caterham surpassed our tasters’ expectations and we will definitely be back soon for more topnotch, pan-Asian cuisine. As well as their superb gastronomy offering, C&P Caterham is a fun, lively venue and a great place to meet and mingle with a fun and welcoming crowd with great live sports, DJ’s and more. Follow them on Instagram @crowncaterham for the latest news and offers. Definitely worth a visit!

We were blown away with our recent review of the gorgeous, authentic Mexican Restaurant Gordo’s in Guildford. We had never seen such a wide ranging, enticing menu and the service, décor and sheer quality of the food at this award-winning eatery was second to none.
Gordo’s is an independently owned family restaurant, which is always good to see, as you do always get those extra personal touches.
Gordo’s was established by head chef, Rafael Onate (affectionately known as El Gordo –meaning head chef!) The restaurant is homage to Rafael’s exotic travels around Mexico, experiencing the colourful culture deeply rooted in its gastronomy; from street food to centuries-old recipes passed down through the generations.
Expect authentic Mexican dishes created using the finest, freshest food. Many of the meat dishes are marinated in homemade sauces for 24 hours or more, making delicious and impactful tastebud explosions.
We were greeted by El Gordo/Rafael himself, his beautiful daughter Martina, and the rest of the friendly Gordo’s team and shown to our seats in the vibrant restaurant, located in the highly sought after location of North Street in Guildford.
There are fun and bright banners and decorations adorning the walls as well as some gorgeous large paintings of famous Mexican icons such as acclaimed artist Frida Kahlo. The sweetest touch was the huge floor-to-ceiling canvas white boards with colour felt tip pans scattered on the architraves nearby, welcomingly inviting the younger guests to
create their own works of art! (Which, by the way, are lovingly kept by Rafael and his team to decorate the stairwell and upper floor of the restaurant – another nice touch!)
Our first treat of the day was the tasty ‘Tinga/Chicken Empanadas’ which consisted of stuffed, fried pastry filled with
Chicken, Cheese and served with three flavoursome Mexican dips. This dish was delicious… and the bite size pastries oozed cheese and the most tender shredded chicken filling. They also come in Prawn, Vegetable and Chilli Con Carne varieties.
This was suitably washed down with two of the most refreshing traditional Mexican drinks, the Agua de Jamaica made fresh Hibiscus extract and the creamy and tangy Lime and Coconut Juice. Their extensive Cocktail, Mocktail and Wine List is fabulous too.
Off the Breakfast/Brunch Menu came the most delicious ‘Huevos Divorciados’ 2 fried eggs, served on a bed of Tangy Tomato Puree, Avocado, Black Beans and Nachos; fresh, healthy and packed full of complimentary flavours, we were definitely sold on our introduction to Mexican brunching!
We got to sample the impressive ‘Taco Board’, consisting of Al Pastor, Cochnitita Pibil (braised pork shoulder cooked for 12 hours) and the Slow Cooked Chicken. This came with a variety of extra fillings including Gordo’s famous Salsa, Chipotle Sauce, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Onion, Fresh Cheese and Coriander - we were indeed spoilt for choice. Plus, a seemingly endless supply of the cutest mini Tacos, our diners had so much fun
creating this fun main course option to our liking and heart’s content.
Finally, we got to try the tastiest ‘Chimichangas.’
A Mexican classic, Chimichangas are deep fried wrapped tortilla which you can have with your choice of 8 fillings at Gordo’s. We went for the Beef Brisket and the King Prawn –both were excellent and the meat and prawns were plentiful and piled high. Thanks Rafael!
We were pleasantly surprised that the spice levels were really manageable at Gordo’s too. All the dishes were fairly mild or of medium heat but on every table they have 3 types of hot sauces that can up the spice level to every customer’s liking. Another great USP for Gordo’s! You can also buy these sauces in miniatures to takeaway so you can enjoy Gordo’s at home too. Rafael, the superb host that he was gave me and my fellow diner some to take home!
We were too full up to try Dessert this time (as you may have been able to tell by the sheer amount of dishes listed above!) but we have already booked to come back where we will definitely leave room for Gordo’s ‘Cheesecake of the Week’, the ‘Dulce de Leche Churros’ (Hispanic-style doughnuts) and the ‘Homemade Fruit Salad With Chantilly Cream & Fruit Compot’ which also looked amazing.
Following our recent trip to Gordo’s we are happy to divulge that Rafael Onate’s magnificent Mexican Menu was divine, as well as being super healthy, with spice levels we could easily manage. A visit to Gordo’s must be on your Surrey ‘To Do’ list. We are back next month for more Mexican feasting and to sample those delicious Desserts we missed out on!
Previously unbeknown to me there nestles in the Surrey countryside town of Warlingham, a simply stunning restaurant that feels as if one has been transported to some magnificent rustic corner of Italy.
The fact that the aptly named Spaghetti Tree has won the Surrey Award for Best Mediterranean Restaurant for the past two years prepared me for the most wonderful, culinary journey that I would undertake.
On my arrival I was warmly received by the coowners, Maria and Loredana. The establishment is filled with blissful memories of a bygone era, adorned with images of Hollywood legends mostly with Italian heritage. It was the most beautiful of days too, Spring had truly sprung.
If I had chosen to eat al fresco, there is a welldesigned, impressive area in the dog-friendly garden that I am sure is most sought after as the arrival of Summer approaches, so make sure you book in early as the Spaghetti Tree is frequently book out. I was literally in for a feast as the first of the 16 courses with true Sicilian authenticity were placed before me, Ceasar himself would have been overjoyed!
I was firstly invited to try the Spaghetti Tree’s famous ‘Carbonara’ which immediately met with my approval - dynamic and aromatic flavours, made it a wonderful opening gambit, with lashings of bacon served in the most delicious creamy sauce. This was followed by the ‘Linguini Crab Pasta’ - so tasty and a delightful mix of colours and textures.
I would go on to sample some truly remarkable dishes but my absolute favourite of the day was the Gnocchi Pollo Pesto’. The delicious, rich pesto sauce, the perfectly cooked tender chicken and the most amazing Gnocchi I have ever had the pleasure to taste. So light and fluffy, like having a small piece of heaven in my mouth.
The ‘Crespolina Di Romano’ was very nice, what is there not to love about a crispy pancake with spinach, mascarpone and raisins with a cheese and tomato sauce.
The ‘Rigatoni Salsiccan’ was an excellent combination of traditional spicy Sicilian sausage with garlic, tomatoes, parmesan and chilli so unsurprisingly this had a bit of kick – which made for an even more flavoursome, powerful dish, definitely one I will be ordering again.
I was really going to have to pace myself now. The dishes kept coming thick and fast! Next were the famous Spaghetti Tree Pizzas. The ‘Mortadella Quattro Formaggi’ was lovely and scattered with generous helpings of mascarpone,
mortadella, mozzarella and burrata cheese with a crumbling of pistachio on top.
The ‘Carbonara Pizza’ was also outstanding. The ‘Vegano Pizza’ option for non-meat eaters was surprisingly satisfying. I then got chatting to the
charming and beautiful co-owner Maria – who I was started to believe was Loredana’s mother – trust me – the two girls could be sisters!
She told me that at the weekends there is a smorgasbord of live entertainment, which includes live singers every Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm and Bottomless Brunches on the first Saturday of the month in Warlingham, last Saturday of the month in Walton and every Saturday at their Shirley Restaurant.
We chatted happily about Maria and the Romano family’s Sicilian background and the key factor with all the Spaghetti Tree sublime dishes; authenticity and simplicity.
The fabulous team at the Spaghetti Tree is like a big family and this is reflected in the friendly laid-back ambience that exudes from this thoroughly well-run establishment.
I next tried three fabulous dishes ‘Gnocci Picante’, ‘Rigatoni Pesto’ and ‘Penne Lasgana’ - all served in lovingly, handcrafted bowls made of pizza dough. The ‘Risotto Pescotora’ is a seafood lovers dream come true too.
Possibly the most colourful dish of the day and one of my favourites was the ‘Gamberoni Picante’, an eclectic collaboration of Butterfly King Prawns served on a bed of Saffron Rice. Next up the ‘Caponata’ was an intriguing mixture of an assortment of vegetables and kale, garlic and fennel were great additions to this very attractive dish.
I was then shown around the impressive and ultra-clean kitchen, chatting to the head chef John. You will be pleased to hear that everything at Spaghetti Tree is prepared freshly onsite from only the best, locally sourced produce.
I was then treated to 3 diverse salads. The most alluring
of which was a fusion of ‘Goat Cheese and Beetroot Carpaccio with Figs’. The ‘King Prawn, Gravlax & Melon Salad’ and the Chargrilled Chicken and Parma Ham Salad’ with courgettes, parmesan and rocket we both also "to die for".
With such a wide and varied selection, one is absolutely spoilt for choice. Next for me to try was the ‘Spaghetti Tree Burger’ in a Brioche Bun with fries. This will no doubt remain a popular option for diners. The ‘Spigola Sea Bass’ fillets was another mouth-watering addition served with new potatoes in garlic butter.
I was given the most sensational of send-offs with the ‘Trio of Melon and Strawberry Salad’ with a scoop of Raspberry Sorbet. A very impressive dessert to close what for me was an epic Italian food adventure.
I am sure that whenever I am in this wonderful part of Surrey I will pop in to say hello. If you do not live near Warlingham you will be very pleased to hear (as was I!) there are two more wonderful Spaghetti Tree Restaurants – one in Walton On
The Hill – the very first Spaghetti Tree Restaurant and one in Shirley.
Good luck to Maria, Dana and all the team at Spaghetti Tree in the upcoming Surrey Awards on May 15th at G Live in Guildford. Not that they need it – sure they will smash it with their third win – making it a hat trick of Awards!!

There's something about a new season that makes us want to overhaul everything - cue frantic hauls of basics and the latest "musthave" pieces. But 2025 is calling for a smarter kind of style. These days, every purchase, whether it's £40 or £4000, needs to earn its keep.
Impulse buys for a one-off night out? They're so last season. Instead, it's time to play it clever: look for pieces that will live in your wardrobe and work for you, not gather dust after one Instagram post. And yes, even if you swear you have "nothing to wear" (we've all stared into a wardrobe full of clothes and thought the same), trust me - you can always rework your favourites with the right finishing touches.
The secret sauce? A seriously good investment piece that transforms your outfit from "nice" to "who is she?" Whether it's an epic pair of sunnies or the dreamiest midi dress, one great piece has the power to lift your entire wardrobe.
So, if you're in the mood to treat yourself - and future you - here are six of the hottest, most enduring luxury buys for summer 2025. These are true keepers: no throwaway trends, just timeless treasures you'll reach for year after year.

Ceres enters Aries and your First House of image on 16th May. There will be a deal, compromise and bargain agreement over your name, face, profile or reputation in the works by June. Then, on May 24th, Saturn enters Aries. For the rest of 2025 and 2026, there will be new restrictions regarding your portrait, title, brand and so on. One situation will be heavily ring-fenced.
This is one of the most important phases of your life in terms of your bank, shares, charity, valuables, house and/or apartment. You are gearing up for solutions and opportunities not possible in 12 years, from next month (June 2025) until June 2026. Start planning and watching the financial and property news now to get ahead Gemini.
You are now in a really intriguing period in your life with networks, chums, pals, allies and people power. From July 7th they will change your life. You will find freedom through these people. In May, future plans start evolving as new friends and rebooted old friendships begin to show themselves.
For example, you may audition for a band in May, be hired in June, then find the band goes Top 20 in July.
Aries patterns in May rule your Twelfth House of solitude and the inner self. Very few people get in there during May. Perhaps just one confidante. You may be a Hindu or sworn to a clairvoyant, but very few people will have any idea of just how many decisions are being informed by your secret self. Your solitary self.
Cancer, take your time as you decide what to do about your job, project, voluntary role or your university/ college commitment. Although you clearly have an escape from the real world these days, you will also have to accept a heavily ring-fenced situation for the next couple of years. Saturn in Aries is very new at the end of May and suggests that whatever the climb, or whatever the peak, you are now committed. Really get the measure of this.
The flurry of activity in your solar Eighth House of joint finance, property and valuables is unusual. Dates to watch for a bargaining period or compromise are as follows: Ceres enters Aries on 16th May. Chiron at 25 Aries is sextile Jupiter at 25 Gemini on 18th May. Then, on May 24th, Saturn enters Aries. Allow a day or two either side. Naturally life insurance, superannuation, pensions, divorce settlements and ‘understandings’ come into it.
24 SEPT – 23 OCT
The duets and duels of your Seventh House in astrology (triggered in May) are classically marriage; divorce; professional partnership; legal separation; personal feuds; new sexual relationships. Dates to watch for turning points include these: Ceres enters Aries on 16th May. Chiron at 25 Aries is sextile Jupiter at 25 Gemini on 18th May. Then, on May 24th, Saturn enters Aries. Everything about the other side, or your other half, becomes all too real when Saturn changes signs at the end of May. Take your time, making choices.
24 OCT – 22 NOV
You will have to compromise over your workload and/or wellbeing in the second half of May, extending to June. This may be a 50-50 division of control with your career, course or unpaid role. If your health (mental or physical health) stops you professionally, academically or as a volunteer – then the bargaining will be via a doctor, therapist, surgeon, health insurance company, complementary practitioner – or with your own approach to diet and exercise. Time to choose!
23
The Aries zone of your chart is packed in May. It rules courtship, the bedroom, babies, children and a younger generation –probably Millennials for you. Mixed patterns mean mixed feelings about 1 or 2 decisions which are coming up. The overriding principle here is one of patient investigation and enquiry. Maybe a professional can help. Perhaps you just need the right book or website. You can certainly figure out a way to keep the stakes low and the inevitable test of patience in 2025 as comfortable as possible.
The Third House of your solar chart is lit up in May 2025. This may be about your brother, sister, cousin (or your ‘brother’ if that is how you call someone). There will be a compromise or deal between you and your brother, sister or cousin by June, as Ceres suggests sharing time, or control, or the reins.
What we are seeing is a big shift in all these areas of your life, which began at the end of March. That was when you realised the boundaries were going, with your sibling/cousin. Time for a check?
The Fourth House of your chart, triggered now, rules your house or apartment, the land, any residence – but also your relatives, the people in the household, your town and country. What is happening now is the start of a long period of deal-making and compromise, very likely with a family member, but perhaps with a live-in partner or a flatmate or roommate. Maybe a tenant or landlady. Try to park the feelings at the door as this will help.
This is a money month. Pisces, these are the dates to watch for important choices about business, good causes, the house, apartment, your possessions, the bank, shares and so on. Ceres enters Aries on 16th May. Chiron at 25 Aries is sextile Jupiter at 25 Gemini on 18th May. Then, on May 24th, Saturn enters Aries. Ever since the end of March you have been shown another world with money matters. It is not the real world. But, it is time for you to get (very) real.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE & WHY?
Pen, paper, guitar. I need to write and have kept journals since I was young. Writing is an endless adventure, you never get bored. There are always new songs to write, and I could finally work out the chords to all my favourite songs by other people.
WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE?
Juliette Lewis.
WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? (ALIVE OR DEAD)
Picasso, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Hicks, Eddie Murphy, Grace Jones, Freddy Mercury.
BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?
Stop apologising.
MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?!
I met the actress Miranda Richardson and was fangirling so hard I sat down on a non-existent chair and just fell on the floor and bashed my coccyx so hard I couldn't speak or move.
BIGGEST FASHION FAUX PAS?
Maybe the bleached bit in my 2009 micro fringe, but I still think it was cute.
Brit and Ivor Novello award-winning 'Suddenly I See' singer, KT Tunstall, is performing at Guilfest on 6th July at Stoke Park. She will be entertaining the masses with her hits both old and new. We got to catch up with the Scottish born singer/songwriter for this insightful 60 Second Interview.
WORST HABIT?
Interrupting.
FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN?
Friday night in and Sunday day out!
WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY?
I went to Uni in Egham, so I'll say our student house parties in Staines!
WHAT'S THE WORST THING ABOUT SURREY?
Also our student house parties in Staines!
THIS YEAR IS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF YOUR HIT DEBUT ALBUM, EYE TO THE TELESCOPE, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE BEEN IN THE LIMELIGHT FOR TWO DECADES NOW?
I'm feeling extremely grateful for this long career doing what I love. It can't happen without the support of fans and people continuing to relate to what I'm making, and my favourite thing about all of it is that I've made the things I've wished to make and have the freedom to keep doing that. I feel very, very lucky in that.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CAREER HIGHLIGHT?
The most recent would have to be the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection. It was so unexpected, and I felt very loved on receiving that! Songwriting craft is the soul of all of this for me, and to be celebrated for that aspect meant a huge amount.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN WRITING MUSIC?
Nature, memorable phrases, very specific and personal lyrics, stories, memories of moments of emotional intensity, and always struggle and pain; when you can transmute those things into something useful and beautiful, it feels like you're done something right.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PERFORM LIVE & WHY?
I have to say 'Suddenly I See'it's such a fun song physically to perform, the swing, the execution of the rhythm, but also looking at all these grinning faces, everyone singing along, looking at everyone remembering what the song reminds them of, where they were, it's fantastic fun.
YOU TURN 50 THIS YEAR WE HEAR! HOW ARE YOU CELEBRATING?
As it's the 20th anniversary of Eye To The Telescope, I wanted to play the album start to finish and twin it with my birthday celebrations. My dream venue was the Royal Albert Hall...so that's what I'm doing! Celebrating with an amazing band and 5000 fans!
Catch KT Tunstall live on the main stage at Guilfest where the impressive line-up also includes The Jacksons, Dub Pistols, Razorlight, Soul II Soul and Leo Sayer among 30 other greats. Visit their website at www.guilfest.co.uk to secure your tickets now.
We’ve heard of a balanced diet but how about a balanced home? A central tenet of Danish living, home is more than just a place to live – it’s a sanctuary for rest, creativity, and well-being. Homes that foster harmony, beauty and functionality can directly enhance everyday wellness.
“Less is more”, says Uwais Mohammed, BoConcept Interior Designer based in Leeds. “This applies to all aspects of life but with the busy lives we all lead, the one thing we all crave is simplicity.”
What better way to express this than in our homes? “Our home is our sanctuary, so it should be free of distractions and focus on key elements that bring a sense of serenity.”
The Danish Approach to Balance
Danish design is globally renowned for its ability to merge aesthetics with practicality. Rooted in the principles of minimalism, functionality and natural elements. The Danish concepts of hygge (a sense of comfort and cosiness) and lykke (happiness) serve as guiding principles in crafting spaces that contribute to mental and emotional well-being.
“We believe that a well-balanced home has the power to improve daily life”, says Signe Kok Nielsen, BoConcept Copenhagen-based interior designer. “By thoughtfully designing interiors that re ect personal style while embracing Danish simplicity, we help clients create environments that bring joy and tranquillity.”
Start with Symmetry
“Balance large pieces of furniture, such as the curved Bergamo sofa, across the space to create visual harmony”, says Kok Nielsen.
It’s all about “beautiful proportions” and achieving the right balance between beauty and functionality for designer Morten Georgsen, who has designed many of BoConcept’s best-selling pieces, such as the ceramic-topped Santiago dining table and sideboard, and perfectly curved Bolzano collection.
Choose a neutral or soft colour palette as your foundation –beige, pale blues or greys create a serene atmosphere. Then layer with complementary tones to add depth and interest while maintaining harmony. Textures add depth and warmth to a
“A
space. Soft fabrics, natural wood and smooth ceramics create a tactile, balanced atmosphere. Elements such as stone sculptures and linen pillows contribute to a natural, calming retreat.
Incorporating nature into your interior décor is also linked to well-being. Bring the outdoors in with plants, natural materials and earthy tones. A few well-placed potted plants or a piece of BoConcept’s nature-inspired art – like Helena Christensen’s Flora series – can create a connection to the natural world.
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood. Soft, warm lighting enhances relaxation while maximising natural light is essential for vitality. Opt for layered lighting, including ambient, task, and accent lighting, to create depth and atmosphere.
