Hello Surrey,
Welcome to the July Issue of Surrey Rocks Magazine, where this month we cover the latest launches in Surrey: chic new French restaurant Bordelaise in Epsom, Fego Catering in Esher and Clean Cuts barbershop in Guildford; all three burgeoning businesses are must trys.
Plus, we bring you the hottest Festival Fashion in ‘For Him’ and ‘For Her’ where the best looks are explored, from boho to biker chic, there is something for everyone and it won’t break the bank. You could be the owner of a pink flamingo shirt and short set for £12.50.
Entertaining the kids through the longest break from school for the year (when do the Summer holidays end?!) we here at Surrey Rocks know that a lot of parents will be saying this to themselves in July with little ones running everyone ragged. But we have a solution ‘School’s Out’ with 10 of the best things to do in Surrey with your little ones.
We have fantastic and insightful interviews from Jessica Monaco and the amazing work she has done for Surrey Fashion Week, The K9Angels and Camp Beagle helping save dogs worldwide.
We also caught up with Barry Ashworth of the Dub Pistols where he speaks candidly on how he became a DJ, (his mates used blow horns over his mixing!) spent $1.5m in one year in the US and how they were given the moniker of being “the hardest working lazy bastards in the world.” Barry’s limited company is called, ‘What The Fuck Can Possibly Go Wrong?’
And I would just like to thank everyone for all their support from the Surrey Awards and the phenomenal feedback and press coverage we have received. We can’t wait to bring it back next year.
Hope you enjoy reading,

everyone’s talking about... CELEBRITIES KATY PERRY & ORLANDO BLOOM SPLIT
Singer Katy Perry has split with her actor husband Orlando Bloom after 9
The reason for the split has been cited as Katy’s workload and the fact they “grew apart” although Katy’s latest single ‘Truth’ hints at cheating. In the song from her latest album ‘143’ she says:
“I got a vision keepin' me up at night. My intuition's tellin' me things ain't right. Can't look in the mirror, what is it you're tryna hide? Can't give me your password to your phone, not start a fight. You're treating me different, tell me what's going through your mind? You're acting so distant, who you see when you close your eyes?”
‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star Orlando and ‘Firework’ singer Katy met back in 2016 and famously took to a paddle board naked when they first got together. They have a four-year-old daughter together called Daisy Dove. The split is said to be amicable on both parts with Katy currently touring Australia while Orlando is at Bezos’ wedding getting papped “air-kissing” Kim Kardashian and taking long walks with a model named Sydney.
Katy was one of the 6 women who recently took part in Jeff Bezos’ latest space mission – making history as the first popstar in space. The voyage took place in April with Amazon owner Jeff Besoz’s fiancé Lauren Sanchez among her co-passengers. Katy was also married to Russell Brand for 14 months back in 2011, who has been in “hot water” of late due to alleged sexual abuse claims. Katy previously alluded to “keeping his truth - which she would keep locked in her safe 'for a rainy day'”

HARRY STYLES SNOGS MYSTERY WOMAN
Former One Direction singer Harry Styles was spotted snogging a mystery woman in the VIP area at Glastonbury Festival.
He was with her the entire evening as fans recalled “he could not keep his hands off her.”
Another source spoke to The Sun newspaper, saying:
“Harry only had eyes for this woman and sparks were flying as soon as they were together.”
This is the first public kiss that Harry, aged 31, has had since his 2023 tryst with American model and actress Emily Ratajkowski in Japan. He was caught passionately kissing her against a car although nothing ever came of it.
LEWIS CAPALDI MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN
Singer Lewis Capaldi made a triumphant return to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury on Friday 27th June, just two years after his 2023 performance where he failed to finish his set, telling fans “he needed a break.”
The Scottish-born singer turned up as the ‘surprise headliner’ and wowed fans with his superb set, with cheers from the crowd, an emotional Capaldi said of his return: “Glastonbury it's good to be back. Won't say too much up here today as if I do I might start crying, but I can't thank you enough for coming here and being here with me.”
In 2023 he announced he was taking break from touring “for the foreseeable future” as he grappled with his mental health and Tourettes, following his Glastonbury performance where he was unable to finish his set and the crowd had to step in to finish the lyrics to his hit song ‘Somebody You Used To Know.’
Capaldi sadly revealed at the time: “I'm very sorry to let you know I'm going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future. I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I'd hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out. But the truth is I'm still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourettes and it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”

WINNER BEST RESTAURANT (MEDITERRANEAN)
RECIPE
BEETROOT, BROCCOLI & MACKEREL GRAIN BOWL
It’s all about the beetroot in this quick grain bowl from celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver. We’re using half of it to elevate shop-bought houmous, while the rest is tossed with vinegar for extra zing. Just add Jamie’s, smoky charred broccoli and salty smoked mackerel for an epic easy lunch that only takes 10 minutes to make – a perfect, quick, easy, light and healthy recipe for Summer!
INGREDIENTS:
(Serves 2)
• 1 x 250g pack vac-packed beetroot
• ½ x 200g tub of houmous
• red wine vinegar
• 160g Tenderstem broccoli
• 1 x 250g pouch of Jamie Oliver Super Grains
• 2 x 80g smoked mackerel fillets, from sustainable sources
• 1 small handful of fresh mint leaves (5g)
METHOD:
1. Place half the beetroot in a food processor with the houmous and blitz until smooth.
2. Cut the remaining beetroot into wedges and toss in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar.
3. Place a large non-stick frying pan on a medium-high heat. Trim the broccoli and cut the thicker stalks in half lengthwise, then place in the pan and cook for about 5 minutes, or until lightly charred, turning occasionally.
4. Add a splash of water and cook for another 2 minutes, or until just tender.
5. Meanwhile, heat the Super Grains according to packet instructions.
6. Use the back of a spoon to spread the houmous across the bottom of 2 big bowls, then top with the grains, beetroot wedges and broccoli, flake over the mackerel and sprinkle over the mint leaves.
WINE MATCH
When pairing wine with this wholesome and tasty grain, beetroot and mackerel dish from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, a wine with a balance of fruity notes, earthiness and acidity would be your best match.
Pinot Noir or a lighter-bodied red like Dolcetto are often recommended for beetroot dishes, as they can complement the sweet and earthy flavours.
A dry rosé or a crisp white like a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc could also work well, especially with mackerel, broccoli and mint in this delicious dish.
MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW
SUPERMAN MOVIE
The new ‘Superman’ action movie by Warner Bros. and DC Comics is out in all good cinemas this July 11th.
The story in the latest outing (Henry Cavill last reprised in ‘Justice League’ back in 2017) follows the tale of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville in Kansas.
The film is written, directed, and coproduced by James Gunn who was behind ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Brit actor Nicholas Hoult plays Superman’s arch enemy, the evil Lex Luther. Also starring Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced.
The film explores Superman's journey to reconcile his alien heritage with his adoptive human family. Superman is seen the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as oldfashioned, getting Superman the backlash heroes should not really deserve!
Actor David Corenswet, who is taking the new starring role as Superman, was formally the lead in Netflix series ‘The Politician’ in 2019-2020 and ‘Hollywood’ in 2020. Gunn had originally cast Henry Cavill in the role but changed his mind to replace him with the relative newcomer, Corenswet.
This may have been a bold, lastminute move by the writer/director but is considered a good one! Corenswet has been praised by pundits for his role as the DC Comics superhero - with many predicting sequels to come off the back of this new Warner Bros. movie outing.
VERONICA ELECTRONICA – MADONNA
Global pop icon Madonna is releasing an 8 track album called ‘Veronica Electronica’ featuring never been heard tracks and remixed material from her infamous 1998 ‘Ray of Light’ album on July 25th.
‘Veronica Electronica’ features newly edited versions of club remixes by acclaimed producers and artists including Peter Rauhofer, William Orbit, Sasha, BT, and Victor Calderone, along with the original demo of ‘Gone, Gone, Gone’ – a previously unreleased recording produced by Madonna and US singer/ songwriter Rick Nowels.
The track ‘Skin - The Collaboration Remix Edit’ was issued as an early release along with the announcement of the new album on June 5th this year.
Interestingly, throughout the original album's campaign, Madonna commented that ‘Veronica Electronica’ is the nickname to the alter-ego she gave herself during the recording of the ‘Ray of Light’ album. It is also one of her middle names, originating from her Catholic confirmation when she was a child.
Veronica Electronica will be released on July 25th on ‘silver nugget’ coloured vinyl. There is no CD version planned at this stage.
FROM TAPAS TO TOWERS - JASMINA RUCIC
What happens when you swap Dutch windmills for Mediterranean hills - and then trade them for the dazzling skyline of Dubai?
This exhilarating, new novel ‘From Tapas to Towers’ dives into the chaos and beauty of starting over, blending honest storytelling with travel, humour and the unexpected.
From Marbella’s laid-back lifestyle to Dubai’s fast-paced glamour, Jasmina Rucic writes with warmth, wit, and the kind of perspective that only comes from living through contrast. This is a love letter to reinvention - full of honesty, cultural surprises, and the art of embracing the unknown.
Scattered between reflections are curated city tips, “insider Insights,” and golden one-liners, making this book not only moving, but useful for those wanting to visit Marbella or Dubai.
The cover artwork by Sebastian Mark-Graham, known for his work with Marbella Club Hotel, Loewe and other iconic brands, gives the book a collectable, visual charm that makes it stand out.
Because life isn’t just about where you live - it’s about how boldly you embrace it. Stylish, sun-soaked and full of surprises this new novel is a great read and an unfiltered look on living a glamorous “expat” life.

HI JESSICA, YOU HAVE A HUGE FOLLOWING ON INSTA - HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE AN INFLUENCER?
It’s just my fan club. It’s a space to chat and keep in touch with fun content from my modelling life and archives.
I HEAR YOU HAVE A NEW MOVIE IN THE MAKING! Yes! It’s a true story of a calculated unbelievable villainess. Expect crazy scenarios, lots of action and deception. I’m currently in talks with film producers and looking for funding, if anyone would like to get involved…
YOU LIVE SUCH A GLAMOROUS JET SET LIFESTYLE! WHAT HAVE BEEN A FEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR GLITTERING CAREER SO FAR?
Appearing on international magazine covers and attending and assisting with amazing events and charity fundraisers such as Surrey Fashion Week and the Surrey Awards.
HOW WAS YOUR RECENT CANNES & F1 MONACO GRAND PRIX EXPERIENCE?
It’s always amazing! I used to live close to St Tropez. Summers there are so relaxing and picturesque. Monaco is my favourite town. I love going back there.
YOU ALWAYS LOOKS SO FRESH AND AMAZING! WHAT ARE YOUR TOP BEAUTY, FITNESS AND STYLE TIPS?
Five litres of mineral water and fresh smoothies with ginger and turmeric. I eat everything organic at home and have tonnes of vitamins and supplements. Pure Altai shilajit in everything. I also have marine collagen matcha with coconut milk and vanilla, organic Irish Sea moss, and my preferred fruits are pineapple and papaya as they contain important enzymes. I consume all of the above on a daily basis, and also practice yoga, Pilates and go swimming. Style-wise, I prefer timeless pieces to re-wear over fast fashion. It’s more ecological and ethical.

THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN SURREY?

For meals out, Al Forno in New Malden is an authentic Italian serving the finest seafood pizzas. Extra truffle oil for me! My favourite restaurant is Scott’s, on the river in Richmond. I love everything about it… You just have to go.
YOU’RE A PROLIFIC PHILANTHROPIST AND SO SUPPORTIVE OF ALL OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS…
I do as much as I can to help out wherever I can be of assistance for all charities, especially at fundraisers like Surrey Fashion Week, which is currently fundraising for Surrey’s Royal Marsden cancer hospital.
And I’m up for a date! So, get bidding on our latest Surrey Fashion Week auction, guys, all in aid of charity. Check out www.jumblebee.co.uk/surreyfashionwweekxmissbritanniaxpolo

THANKS, JESSICA - YOU’VE BEEN SUCH A FANTASTIC SUPPORTER OF SURREY FASHION WEEK EVER SINCE WE LAUNCHED OUR CELEBRITY CHARITY CATWALK SHOWS WITH SURREY’S PUSSYCAT DOLL KIMBERLY WYATT AND SURREY ROCKS BACK IN 2021. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN CHARITY WORK?
My first fundraising challenge was in 2012. Whilst living and working in the French Alps, I took on a daring adventure by my friend to take a jump off from Mont Blanc. I told her, if we were going to risk our lives, we should do it for charity so someone could benefit from our endeavours!
I chose to crowdsource for a major UK-based animal charity. I then came across K9 Angels, another UK not-for-profit organisation on Facebook and was shocked to see how many furry friends were suffering in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. I immediately decided to help and get actively involved. Now, I’m an official fundraiser for the K9 Angels team @ thek9angels, helping to save dogs worldwide. Every Dog Matters.
HOW DOES THIS AMAZING CHARITY ASSIST CANINES IN NEED AND WHAT’S THE LATEST ON YOUR CAMP BEAGLE CAMPAIGN WITH OUR PAST SURREY FASHION WEEK K9 ANGELS MODELS VICTORIA FEATHERSTONE PEARCE (AND HER RESCUE DOGS WHO ALSO WALKED THE SFW CATWALK!) AND S CLUB SINGER JO O’MEARA?
They focus on funding to help street dogs in trouble, providing medical care and food and assisting with them being adopted, alongside carrying out massive spay and neuter campaigns. I was recently at the High Court of Justice to support the @ thecampbeagle campaign.
Their eviction notice was stopped by the judges. A small victory for them in a big fight for dogs.
For four years, Camp Beagle has been running a campaign against a dog-breeding facility called MBR, supplying over 2,000 beagle pups a year to laboratories across the UK. MBR, in addition to breeding beagles for toxicology laboratories, harvests and sells the dogs’ blood and internal organs. Covert footage and whistleblowers' videos taken inside MBR’s facilities provide evidence of horrific systematic neglect.
Camp Beagle works tirelessly to expose the suffering of the MBR beagles, raise public awareness, and lobby the government to end animal testing. They need the public’s awareness and support now more than ever to push forward.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT MBR ACRES…
Beagles are kept inside windowless sheds and never allowed outdoors. Their pens have filthy concrete floors covered in wet sawdust and excrement, and no bedding at all. These dogs are so deprived of the most basic welfare requirements that, in undercover footage taken inside MBR, they can be seen displaying signs of pathological behaviour.
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AND OVERCOME?
All of the puppies bred at MBR are used in toxicology tests required by the regulators. Yet over 90% of the drugs tested on animals fail in human trials because they either turn out to be toxic to humans or their alleged efficacy does not hold true in humans. Animal models do not accurately predict human effects.
There are many non-animal methods of research available now, producing more accurate data and more relevant results at a fraction of the cost. One of these new methodologies I’ve called "liver on a chip". They have significantly better accuracy for predicting human toxicity than the animal tests currently in use.
Camp Beagle is running a parliamentary petition to ban testing on dogs, which gained 100,000 signatures in four days and now has nearly a quarter of a million. On 28th April, the petition was debated in Parliament, and many MPs spoke in favour of it. Please, everyone, sign the petition and share it as much as possible. These barbaric practices in our country need to be abolished immediately! www.petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/705384
The toughest challenge of all was choosing my rescue dog out of all the strays I met whilst on a rescue mission to Romania with K9 Angels. The conditions are exceptionally harsh in war-torn countries…. nothing compares to what the little dogs suffer on the streets.
The small courageous team of protesters @thecampbeagle campaigning to shut down MBR Acres here in our country urge you to take a look into your own dog's eyes and stand united for their friends. Daily torture and murder of in nocent beagle pups being bred for toxicology testing should be banned immediately by our government.
WE WISH YOU THE VERY BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR CAMP BEAGLE CAMPAIGN AND WILL SUPPORT YOU WHEREVER WE CAN, AS I’M SURE OUR READERS WILL, TOO. SO, WHAT DOES BEING SUCH A POSITIVE FEMALE ROLE MODEL MEAN TO YOU?
A woman who is bold enough to go forward and speak her mind on matters concerning the voiceless, even though it may not be a popular subject or culture. I look up to strong women who have overcome adversity to achieve success, helping and guiding others along the way to become better people.
WHO ARE THE WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE?
Definitely my friend Victoria, founder of K9 Angels. She's original and genuinely beautiful from the inside out. A strong and non-judgemental woman, she's also very kind and very wise. Victoria has rescued over 1000 dogs over the past ten years with her not-for-profit charity with her fellow team members. We are great friends to this day, and we both continue to try and make a change in this world.
ANY ADVICE FOR WOMEN STARTING OUT IN THEIR CAREERS?
Stay grounded and humble. Be true to yourself and be unique. It takes a determined and resilient woman to achieve positivity and triumph in the world. Never give up. And enjoy the journey with those that have been loyal and stuck by you through thick and thin. Food for thought for us all!
FINALLY, WHAT’S NEXT FOR JESSICA MONACO?
I’m going back to Koh Samui, Thailand, to help the rescuers and dogs. @samuistreetdogs are amazing. I’m also excited to swim with the sacred sea dogs at Pig islandan ultimate life experience for me. My ultimate goal is to be in a position where I can help eradicate the suffering of street dogs worldwide. A big operation that teams such as @thek9angels and @nialharbison do on the frontline. We all play an important part in supporting charities. If people can’t donate, they can still support by being responsible with animals, sharing and creating awareness to others!
BARRY ASHWORTH
ASHWORTH EXCLUSIVE
Sometimes you have to go through the mill to realise why you were put on this Earth. So it is with the Dub Pistols, the reggae-breaks-jungle mashup, the gangsterswaggering festival stalwarts whose rollercoaster story reads like a rock’n’roll cautionary tale on a grand scale. When big beat ruled the clubs the Pistols were snapped up by Interscope magnate Jimmy Lovine and anointed Geffen Records’ priority act for America. But Geffen put their album out the week that 9/11 happened, so the Dub Pistols ended up broke and label less instead of US superstars. This is how it happens. They get knocked down - but they get back up again.
Over an 18-year career the Dub Pistols have worked with heroes like The Specials, Busta Rhymes, Horace Andy, Madness and Gregory Isaacs. They’ve burned through different members and hundreds of thousands of pounds on assorted capers and hedonism and done — in the words of dapper frontman Barry Ashworth, a ducking, diving South London graduate of the ‘Summer of Love’ generation who started a band because he loved Happy Mondays and never looked back — “more fucking drugs than we knew what to do with.”
Barry Ashworth, frontman of Dub Pistols (and Patron of the charity Tonic Music for Mental Health) is the brains behind the TNT awarded ’Best UK Festival’ Mucky Weekender.
The festival is named after one of the band’s biggest and best-selling singles ”Mucky Weekend”. Having achieved huge success in the charts, with 8 albums under their well-styled belts, party loving decided to create and host their own festival in 2019. It is a self-funded independent festival, no sponsors, no corporate backers. Mucky Weekender launched in 2019 at a different location for 2 years then had to move, this will be their 5th year at Vicarage Farm, their spiritual home. It’s 28 acres of private parkland, rolling countryside near Winchester. It’s a celebration of creativity, dance culture and community set across 4 themed stages and a large bar venue – the location has a capacity of up to 5,000.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO DJ’ING?
It all started back in 1987, I was a club promoter at the Funk Club and The Gardening Club in Covent Garden, then I went to Ibiza and never looked back! I was unable to mix records properly at first, so I got pals to scratch and play horns over the top of my sets!
WHAT MADE YOU START THE DUB PISTOLS BACK IN 1996?
We got bored with the generic house sound and were inspired by the anything-goes attitude of the late 90s’ genre that came to be called big beat in the UK acts like The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Propellerheads.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN MAKING MUSIC?
Everything! Dub Pistols are a mix dub, reggae, punk, jungle, ska, breakbeat, hip-hop and a whole lot more so literally anything goes!
YOU HAVE PEFORMED WITH MUSICAL ROYALTY OVER THE YEARS – WHO WAS THE BEST TO PEFORM WITH & WHY?
We got to perform with The Specials at Guilfest 11 years ago, that was a special moment being on stage with Terry Hall. That was
a hilarious festival as Johnny got locked up the night before for being a bit too pissed and we also ended up crashing the minibus into the stage. Johnny joined us on stage halfway through the set! We can’t wait to perform there again this year, so many good memories.
YOU HAVE BEEN PERFORMING FOR 4 DECADES NOW –WHAT IS THE SECRET TO YOUR ONGOING SUCCESS?
We’ve got a saying in the band, that whatever can go possibly wrong, will go wrong! We had a £1.5million record deal with Geffen Records in the US and toured everywhere, 6 weeks on each time. We were just about to release our new album and then 9/11 happened. The album was all about guns, explosions and buildings falling down, so it was understandably shelved by Geffen!
After that year in the US, I came home thinking I still had £150,000 in the bank, but I’d spent so crazily, I was £16,000 overdrawn! I call us the most successful unsuccessful band of all time and the hardest working lazy bastards in the world! My limited company is called, ‘What The Fuck Can Possibly Go Wrong?’
YOU ARE HUGE ON THE FESTIVAL CIRCUIT AS WELL AS OWNING YOUR OWN -MUCKY WEEKENDER – HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?
We always wanted to do a Festival and started Mucky Weekender 6 years ago, but back in 2019 we only had 900 people turn up. Now we have a capacity of 5000. It’s a great festival with a bunch of really cool people. I'm a strong believer that the crowd are just as important as the performers.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT MUCKY WEEKENDER?
Apart from a fantastic line-up of acts including Norman Jay MBE (who will be headlining the new main stage Riot Noise on Thursday 11th September) Leftfield, Groove Armada and Alison Limerick, everyone has a smile on their face and are full of love. I always say it's the kind of festival you could go to alone and then leave with 1000 friends.
IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
My wife, my daughter and my cat.
WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE?
Paul Kaye, the comedian who played Dennis Pennis!
WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? (ALIVE OR DEAD)
John Lennon, Bob Marley and Ricky Gervais.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING FAMOUS?
Free clothes!
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
Don’t take yourself too seriously.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?
Peter Pan (cos I’ll never grow up!) Although I was quite a good footballer when I was younger and could have turned pro - but my first trip to Ibiza in the eighties changed all that!
MOST EMBARRASSING THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU?!
I was at Bestival and there were loads of kids there, I did a star jump and got a hole in my trousers exposing my pants to the whole festival.
WHATS YOUR BIGGEST FASHION FAUX PAS?
See above!!
BEST CHARACTER TRAITS?
My sense of humour.
WORST HABITS!?
Talking over people.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE A FRIDAY NIGHT OUT OR SUNDAY DAY IN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Well it always used to be a Friday night out but getting a bit old now so should really say Sunday day in!
WHAT´S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURREY?
It’s a beautiful area. I grew up in the Surrey countryside so always love coming back here.

GET INTO GOLF
No golfing ability? No problem! Topgolf is a game that seasoned golfers or total novices can play. Topgolf only has 4 centres in the UK – and luckily for us there is one based in Addlestone, Surrey.
You can have up to 6 players in a booth and you score points by hitting micro-chipped golf balls at giant dartboard-like targets on an outfield. The closer you get your ball to the centre or the ‘bullseye’ and the further the distance, the more points you earn.
You play using proper golf clubs and it is a great way to take up golf in a fun environment as it all digitally scored so you can just get on and enjoy playing the game. Or have fun laughing at those in your party that can’t!
If you have a few families for a day out – you can get two adjacent bays so 12 of you can play together.
It is worth noting that it is a lot easier to get the balls further on the top tier so always best to request an upstairs booth area if you are with beginners.
The fun and games don’t stop there either; there is arcades and a bar and restaurant on site so you indulge in delicious food and drinks brought to you while you play.
You can also book in and enjoy a game of Footgolf on site at the Addlestone Meadow Farm site.

CELEBRATING 50 OF FOXHILLS CLUB
50 YEARS CLUB & RESORT
Fifty years ago, in 1975, the elegant grounds of Foxhills - set within 400 acres of Surrey countryside - officially opened to the public as a two-course golf club. It was a bold new chapter for a historic estate once home to the 18th-century politician, Charles James Fox, whose legacy still echoes through the halls of Foxhills Club & Resort’s manor house. Back then, Foxhills was under the ownership of Aer Lingus, which had ambitious plans for the golf venture as it was looking to diversify. Despite its beauty and promise, the early days proved challenging, and, by the early 1980s, the club was ripe for a new beginning. That turning point came in 1983 when Ian and Pamela Hayton purchased Foxhills. Ian, an advertising executive by trade, had a clear vision: to build not just a golf club, but a vibrant family-friendly country club (with inspiration from the US country clubs, particularly in New York) where people of all ages could relax, play and feel at home. He famously said: “If we can get their families here to join them after their round of golf, we keep the wallet here”. It was an insight that would shape the soul of the business for the next five decades.
From that moment on, Foxhills began to evolve into something far beyond a golf club. Ian and Pamela brought energy, charm and personality to the club which still lives on through their brand every
day. They extended the accommodation offering and began welcoming paying guests to stay overnight. Pamela oversaw the transformation and interior design of the rooms, ensuring each one carried her hallmark of warmth and a “home from home” feel. Members could now dine, play, stay and unwind, all in one location. By the 1990s, Foxhills had become a magnet for Surrey families. The restaurant served popular dishes like Breast of Chicken Country-style and early set menus that included wine, all for under £10. Children played in the open grounds, tennis courts buzzed with activity and the club’s reputation grew with each passing year. Yet the Haytons stayed true to their mission of maintaining an inclusive, relaxed atmosphere that brought people together. Through the early 2000s, the club diversified its proposition to meet the evolving tastes of members. It became a host for family fireworks displays and summer parties, events that kept the atmosphere fun, fresh and accessible. Behind the scenes, the Foxhills Foundation was steadily making a mark on British golf. By supporting promising young players, it helped launch the careers of professionals like Anthony Wall and Paul Casey, making it the UK’s longest-running golf scholarship programme.
When Ian Hayton sadly passed away in 2010, his son Marc took the reins and set out on a mission to continue the family’s legacy.
Under his guidance, and the watchful eye of Pamela, Foxhills entered a new era of innovation and investment. While the club had already launched a website in the late ’90s, it was in the 2010s that it fully embraced the digital world. Their social media strategy helped showcase Foxhills’ aspirational lifestyle offering to a broader audience.
In 2012, Foxhills played a unique role in Britain’s Olympic success story. The Team GB cycling squad, including Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, chose Foxhills as their training base during the London Olympics. The club adapted quickly, installing Wattbikes and supporting the team’s performance efforts. The legacy of that Olympic summer can still be felt throughout the state-of-the-art indoor cycling studio and wellness areas today, as
well as in Lyne House where each bedroom is named after a GB cyclist, including the Sir Bradley Wiggins Suite, where the Olympic champion stayed during their training for the games.
Further enhancements followed. In 2016, a £1.7 million refurbishment added two new Deluxe Suites, blending the estate’s historic elegance with modern comfort. With more than £40 million of investment over the 50-year period, the resort has expanded to provide even more opportunities for people to socialise, exercise and try something new. 66 bedrooms, 9 tennis courts, padel and pickleball courts, 5 swimming pools, spa, gym, yoga cabin, art studio and driving range are all available to guests and members, in addition to the 2 Championship golf courses and 9-hole par-3 Manor Course. As well as weekly timetables that includes nearly 250 activities, from woodland walks and runs to yoga, fitness and art classes. Plus, the resort now boasts three restaurants, providing a range of dining options for families, couples and corporate guests.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed an unprecedented challenge. Foxhills was forced to close its doors for the first time in its history. Yet, in this time of crisis, the club’s community-first values came to the fore. More than £28,000 was donated to local food banks. And, just months later in May 2021, Foxhills unveiled one of its most significant investments, the Pavilion.
This new £7 million leisure facility was designed especially for families. Nestled within the Victorian walled garden, it includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a soft play area, group fitness studios, a crèche, playground, games room and a restaurant. It represents the Hayton
vision in full bloom, a space where parents and children can enjoy active, healthy and joyful experiences together. Alongside new amenities, Foxhills has become a model of environmental responsibility. Initiatives like rainwater harvesting, solar panel installations, LED lighting and the use of low-energy DAISY filtration systems are all part of a long-term commitment to sustainability. The club has also moved toward cleaner products and wellness-focused amenities in its spa treatments and hotel toiletries.
The investment has not gone unnoticed. In recent years, Foxhills has collected an impressive number of awards. It was named National Gym of the Year and Best Hotel & Spa Facility by the National Fitness Awards. Condé Nast Johansens recognised it as Best for Families, and Today’s Golfer recently ranked it among the top three golf resorts in England -and within the top 20 across Great Britain and Ireland. It is also one of just 17 venues globally to be named in the 59club’s Eminent Collection, which recognises excellence in service across the golf and hospitality industries.
As 2025 arrived, Foxhills began its 50th anniversary celebrations in style. This summer, members will celebrate everything the club is today with a ‘Festival of Foxhills’ in July, featuring family activities, competitions, games, challenges, live music and entertainment.
Video and photo tributes showcase five decades of evolution, from the millennium ball to Olympic preparations, to the opening of the Pavilion. Familiar faces - including Sylvester Stallone, Omar Sharif, Desmond Tutu, David Cameron and Lewis Moodywere remembered for their visits across the decades, adding glamour to Foxhills’ guestbook.
Yet, even as it celebrates its past, Foxhills continues to look ahead. The past year saw a refurbishment of Lyne House, one of the accommodation wings as part of a wider £3 million investment into the hotel and manor house. More than half of the bedrooms now have a fresh new look, embedding AI-driven inroom concierge services and Proverb eco-friendly bathroom amenities. New pickleball and padel courts were also added to the resort in 2024, and a new spa garden is scheduled to open in 2026.
The club remains as committed as ever to the Surrey community and being a good neighbour. The Hayton Charitable Trust has funded over £200k so far in local projects, including free holiday camps for children. To mark the 50th anniversary, the club and its members will be raising £50k for the Foxhills Community Camp, funding more than 700 places for children this year (the most ever!). The Foxhills Foundation also continues to nurture the next generation of golfers, with more than 150 graduates to date.
Today, nearly 400 people work across the resort, from its reception team to spa therapists, instructors, event planners, chefs and greenkeepers. The club is a second home not only for its members and guests, but for its colleagues, many of whom have been with the business for decades.
Fifty years on, Foxhills is still what it always aspired to be, a place where everyone - from toddlers to retirees - can find joy, peace, activity and a sense of belonging. From modest beginnings as a golf course, it has become one of the UK’s most celebrated leisure destinations and top country clubs. Its tagline, “Where You Belong,” is more than just a slogan, it is a philosophy that has endured, evolved and enriched thousands of lives over the decades.
As Foxhills looks to its next 50 years, one thing is certain. The spirit of the Hayton family, and the essence of community, will continue to define every experience across the resort. In an era of fast-moving trends, Foxhills remains timeless, a cherished place in the heart of Surrey, and in the hearts of all who’ve ever walked its fairways, swam in its pools or dined with views over the historic manor house’s luscious lawns. Here’s to the next 50 years.

At Jonathan Rowlandson Design we have provided a unique design and build service for a range of clients for over 20 years. With an emphasis on innovative, contemporary design solutions we have risen to the challenge of every project, interior or exterior. Combining our unique approach to metal items with wood, glass, stone, and other materials. At JRD we offer a range of furniture items including the Otolo range. We also design and produce items sympathetic to their environment, be it a rustic bar restaurant with an artisan feel – normally providing seating, counters, bars, lighting, signage, etc. such as Dog Star Brixton – or one-off sculptural items such as the tables for Vivienne Westwood. Our inspiration will often come from the clients’ desires, as well as tapping into nature and art to find a suitable solution. Hardly any 2 projects are the same, we continue to provide new and hopefully better designs.

We were beyond excited to try out their recently opened Fego Esher Café – which has been on our radar for a while. And it did not disappoint.
From the minute we walked through the door we were greeted by the friendly and smiling general manager, Lorand, and his hospitable and charming barista and waitress team; Anca and Roshel. We opted to sit near the back of the café where there were comfy, booth-style seating, beautiful South African inspired décor (a nod to Fego’s heritage) and an open plan, visible kitchen - which is always a good sign in our opinion.
We started our order with a steaming cup of the finest Cappuccino, made by the best Fego baristas, using only sustainable, ethically sourced Coffee Beans from their awardwinning Roastery and the tastiest ‘Green Power Smoothie’ consisting of Apple Juice, Spinach, Strawberry, Mango and Melon. A taste explosion!
RESTAURANT REVIEW
BREAKFAST & BRUNCH
With so many enticing options to choose from we were indeed spoilt for choice. We opted for the ‘Fego Full English’ which was a smorgasbord of Grilled Bacon, Cumberland Sausages, 2 Eggs Your Way (we went for Fried – and they were perfect thank you very much!) Smashed Potatoes, Grilled Tomato, Baked Beans and Toasted Sourdough. There were added options of Classic Hash Browns and Black Pudding, at a small additional charge. We went for the additional Hash Browns. The ‘Fego Full English’ came out beautifully presented and
tasted superb; the Fried Eggs were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of runny yolk - topped with chopped chives, the Sausage and Bacon plentiful, ultra crispy Hash Browns and the tastiest ever slice of chunky, toasted Sourdough, with fresh grilled Tomato and the biggest giant Mushroom. Baked Beans were served in a side dish to not overspill on the other ingredients. Perfect. This was indeed a breakfast of champions, and we can highly recommend.
On the advice of Lorand, our second taster went for the ‘Full Mediterranean’ from the Fego Signature Breakfast Menu, which consisted of 2 perfectly Poached Eggs, Halloumi, Peppers, Mushroom, Avocado, Spinach, Rocket, Confit Tomato and Focaccia. You
RESTAURANT REVIEW
can opt for added Bacon, Sausage, Plant Sausage (Vegetarian) or Smoked Salmon, for an additional charge. We went for the Smoked Salmon to accompany, and it was delicious; lashings of succulent slices of the tastiest Salmon which went perfectly with the fresh Avocado, Peppers and Spinach in this brightly coloured, fresh and wholesome dish.
Other delights on the Menu include their infamous ‘Ranchero Breakfast’ with Poached Eggs, Smashed Potatoes, Chorizo, Mushroom, Jalapeños, Chilli, Peppers, Avocado, Crispy Onions, Peppadew and Coriander Yoghurt. A spicy but firm favourite with Fego customers. Or you can try the ‘Steak & Eggs’ or ‘Breakfast Burrito’ options if you are looking for something a bit different.
As well as the most delicious, freshly made ‘Fego Buttermilk Pancakes’. They come in three varieties, all with three delicious Pancakes - ‘On Their Own’ with Maple Butter and Maple Syrup, or the ‘Sweet Stack’ with Summer Berry Compote, Maple Butter and Maple Syrup or the ‘Savoury Stack’ option with Grilled Cumberland Sausage, Bacon, Hash Brown, Maple Butter and Maple Syrup.
FEGO BAKEHOUSE
Fego is known for its famous in-house Bakehouse where all their goods are freshly made on site. Guests can indulge in the most amazing pastries, bread and freshly made produce, alongside other tantalising delights including ‘White Chocolate, Sour Cherry and Almond Cookie’, ‘Apricot, Ricotta & Poppyseed Tin’ or ‘Lemon Curd and Italian Meringue Cream Bun’ - Yum!
IN SUMMARY
As Fego put it perfectly on their website…...”Drop in for a fresh juice. A chat. Maybe snacking on something healthy. Or going for a burger, some eggs or a sugar-packed dessert. The baristas serve whatever you like. No judgment. No rules, Fego brings this laidback attitude to the UK.”
Fego is indeed a home from home where everybody’s welcome.

SPIRALLING RENOVATION
Let’s talk about something that strikes fear into the hearts of homeowners across the land: the Renovation Budget Spiral. You start with a sensible figure in mind, like, “We’ll do the kitchen and bathrooms for £100k.” Fast forward six months and suddenly you’re £250k deep, crying into the dusty remnants of your dignity, wondering how underfloor heating and brushed bronze taps became non-negotiables.
As interior designers, we’ve seen it all — the chaos, the panicked calls, the spreadsheet meltdowns. And let us tell you: the spiral is not inevitable. It happens when the renovation process is built backwards. Let’s unpack this beautifully disastrous phenomenon.
THE WISHFUL THINKING PHASE
Picture this: you have a Pinterest board called Dream Home Vibes with 372 pins of reclaimed oak, Crittall doors, and bouclé everything. You know you want “something openplan” and “loads of storage” but you haven’t spent a second actually figuring out how you live. What do you do in your home? What frustrates you? What makes you feel good?
This is where we start: The Drill Down Chat. Two to four hours of design therapy, where we go deeper than your average dinner party
RENOVATION COSTS & HOW TO AVOID!
conversation. We want to know if you drink coffee standing up or sitting down. If you host Friday-night dinners for 12 or curl up alone with a book and a tea tray. Why? Because the more we understand about you, the more we can design spaces that function perfectly — and avoid the dreaded mid-project U-turn.
But wait!
THE “PLANNING PERMISSION IS IN!” PANIC
Here’s the trap: architectural plans are approved, the adrenaline kicks in, and you start phoning contractors for quotes.
Have you actually tested whether your wardrobe requirements fits in the bedroom? Will your 3-metre-long sofa actually squeeze into that corner? Has anyone realised the door swing clashes with the built-in storage?
Enter the Game of Tetris – but make it chic.
This is our favourite part. We work with you before planning goes in — yes, that early! — to make sure every room layout works hard. We’ve been known to shift walls, flip floorplans and sneak in storage solutions that would make IKEA weep with envy. It's not about squeezing in more — it’s about planning smarter.
THE QUOTE-FIRST, PLAN-LATER DISASTER
One of the most dangerous moves in a renovation is getting quotes before you’ve nailed down a detailed scope and spec. A contractor can only quote accurately if they know exactly what you want — every light fitting, tile, kitchen handle and water pressure requirement.
If they don’t?
Welcome to the land of PC sums (Provisional Costs), guesswork, and “we’ll decide that later.” That’s where budgets go to die.
We create a Specification Schedule before the build begins, packed with every detail, drawing, and product spec. It’s the renovation Bible your contractor dreams of. No guessing, no grey areas, just facts. The result? Clear, accurate quotes and far fewer nasty surprises.
SID: THE STUFF THAT DOESN’T FALL OUT
SID, aka Structural Interior Design, is everything that stays when you shake the house upside down — kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, lighting, built-in joinery. It’s also where most budgets spiral, especially if you’re choosing on the fly during the build.
We select and cost every SID element before a spade hits the ground. Yes, it’s a lot of work upfront, but it means no expensive “emergency” tile runs or last-minute “oops, we need a whole new lighting plan” dramas.
SID is where design meets discipline.
THE HIDDEN VALUE: COORDINATION AND CALM
Once you’ve designed the dream, we help make it real. That means scheduling, ordering, deliveries, contractor coordination, site visits — all the stuff that keeps the machine running. We don’t just drop off the drawings and disappear.
When you have an interior designer on board from the beginning, you gain a design partner, a budget guardian, a planner, and a calm, experienced voice saying, “We’ve got this.”
SO, WHY DO RENOVATION PROJECTS SPIRAL?
Because people rush.
Because they underestimate the power of planning. Because they fall in love with a Pinterest photo and forget to check the price tag.
Interior design isn’t just about fluffing cushions. It’s strategic. It’s architectural. It’s about intention — the kind that keeps your project from becoming a five-part Netflix documentary called "From Budget to Bankruptcy."
With SP Interiors, you get more than a pretty space. You get a clear process that champions your vision, protects your budget, and delivers results that feel like home.
Don’t let your renovation spiral. Design smarter, plan better, and bring an interior designer on board before you even think about submitting those plans.

GLOW NATURALLY
While the market offers an array of creams, serums and various treatments promising to fill, lift and tighten - not everyone is inclined toward surgical or chemical solutions. Perhaps you are hesitant to inject unfamiliar substances into your skin or simply prefer a more natural path. The good news? You have choices. As a trained holistic reflexologist, I am able to offer a completely natural face lift combining with the latest reflexology.
Maintaining a healthy diet and staying hydrated are essential foundations for radiant skin. If you wish to enhance these results, consider holistic facial therapies such as face yoga, Japanese facial massage, Indian head massage, cranial work and face reflexology. These trending practices are designed to work in harmony with your body rather than force rapid, unnatural changes.
THE NATURAL GLOW-UP
Among these natural options, the Zone Face Lift stands out. I personally endorse and offer this treatment, which Tatler Magazine has described as “extraordinary.” Developed by globally renowned reflexologist Ziggie Bergman, the Zone Face Lift developed from a combination of traditional facial reflexology methods and ancient healing techniques from shamans and uses pressure-point massage ancient body mapping and healing herbs to lift the face and the spirit. This psycho-spiritual approach is transformative and has its positive focus on ageing well. Looking and feeling like the best version of yourself, this magical programme will leave you feeling blissed-out, with a smoother face to match. For many women, this will eliminate the need for injectables and offers a natural alternative to dermal fillers.
This 12-week programme is designed where clients typically notice more defined features, softer and younger-looking skin, and a boost in confidence, it’s hugely relaxing and destressing. The treatment
NATURALLY WITH REFLEXOLOGY
encourages your skin to naturally produce collagen and elastin, smooths fine lines, increases circulation and imparts a healthy glow. An added benefit is the zenned out feeling after the treatment, a hugely beneficial balancing effect of reflexology, ensuring you leave feeling as good as you look.
IS ZONE FACE LIFT RIGHT FOR YOU?
The Zone Face Lift is especially suitable for those seeking a refreshed, healthier appearance without artificial input. The programme includes practical tips and easy “homework” to help sustain your glow between sessions. If you want immediate, dramatic effects similar to fillers, those options remain available.
However, for a gradual, natural improvement - one that honours both your inner and outer well-being - the Zone Face Lift is an excellent choice.
If you are preparing for a wedding or a significant event or simply wish to glow better, scheduling your treatments in advance will ensure your natural radiance is at its peak. Remember, your face is more than just a reflection in the mirror - it’s a vital part of how you connect and express yourself. Treating it with attentive, natural care is both rewarding and empowering.
I am available in Esher and Virginia Water, Surrey. Come see what a face reflexology and a natural Zone Face Lift can do for you!

Helena’s happy place
INSIDE THE JOYFUL, DESIGN-LED HOME OF HELENA CHRISTENSEN
Why are Danes consistently among the world’s happiest people? According to BoConcept’s new Global Artistic Director, Helena Christensen, happiness starts at home. “Design isn’t just about how something looks—it’s about how it makes you feel,” she says. “Your home should reflect your personality and bring you peace.”
At the heart of Helena’s approach is emotion-led design—spaces that soothe, inspire, and spark joy. Her Copenhagen home is a blend of Danish simplicity and personal expression. Organic forms, like those in Charlotte Høncke’s Sweet Art collection, bring an instant smile. “I’m drawn to the playful shapes and soft colours— they feel alive.”
Cosiness is essential, too. In true Danish fashion, Helena carves out ‘hyggekrog’ moments—quiet nooks with candles, plants and books. “Every corner should feel inviting,” she says. “Somewhere to throw yourself down and breathe.”
Her home tells a story—each object collected over decades of travel, each piece curated with
care. “I’ve always been a collector,” she says. “My home is my inner world, turned outward.”
She believes in balance—pairing the clean lines of classic Danish furniture with eclectic art and layered textiles. “There’s beauty in contrast. A simple sofa next to a wall of paintings, or a sculptural lamp beside an old photograph—it makes a space feel lived-in and loved.”
Nature plays its part, too. “I often sit by the window just watching the rain or the birds outside,” she says. “That connection to the outdoors brings me calm.”
Colour and texture are the finishing touches. From bold prints to tactile fabrics, Helena’s home is filled with things that delight the senses. “I don’t follow rules,” she says. “I follow feeling.”
To discover more ways to design for happiness, visit BoConcept Guildford at 89 Woodbridge Road, or find them on the 2nd Floor at Fenwick Kingston. You can also explore the full collection and get inspired online at BoConcept.com.
“BoConcept’s aesthetic is about timeless, elegant, classic pieces with very clean lines”
