everyone’s talking about... FASHION ROYALTY PASSES

Dame Vivienne Westwood, founder of the iconic British fashion label Vivienne Westwood, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family aged 81 on the 29th December. To lose two British Queens in one year is heartbreaking.

Westwood was an enigmatic character and made her way with her controversial, new wave punk looks in the 1970’s and has dressed the biggest stars in the world including Nicole Kidman, Princess Diana, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson and Christina Hendricks. Queen Consort Camilla and Princess Beatrice are also a huge fans of the designer.

Dame Vivienne was also a human rights activist, who was not afraid to make a stand forging charity ‘The Cool Earth Action Group’ for ethical clothing supported by our very own Surrey Fashion Week back in 2021. And who could forget the pictures of her in a white tank marching to PM David Cameron’s Oxfordshire home to protest against fracking in 2015? We had to include this image as a fitting tribute to the Punk Priestess who was not afraid to take a stand to make a change.

R.I.P. Vivienne Westwood 1941-2022 a true British icon and legend.

MESSI’S WORLD CUP POST MAKES HISTORY STACEY MAKES IT FIVE

Lionel Messi, who propelled Argentina to win the 2023 Qatar World Cup, has made history as having the world’s most liked Instagram post!

The scene of him celebrating in the Qatar stadium after Argentina beat France 3-2 in a nail-biting World Cup Final that went to extra time, has racked up an impressive 74.2 million likes on Instagram... so far.

If you put that into Instagram perspective, he has knocked The Egg (55.7 million) and Kylie Jenner’s second pregnancy (with 24.8 million) off the top spots.

Messi, who is now considered the GOAT (Greatest Player Of All Time) after he won the World Cup for Argentina putting Cristiano Ronaldo in second place for the coveted football fan’s title. Despite both players impressive CV’s Ronaldo has yet to win a

World Cup for Portugal.

Messi has so far won 7 Ballon d’Or Trophies, 4 Champions League trophies and 10 La Liga top goal scorer awards, and there was even a season in his career where he managed to break the record for the most goals scored in a full calendar year – netting 91 goals in the entirety of 2012, surpassing Gerd Muller’s previous tally of 85 goals that he managed in 1972. The World Cup was the last trophy he had to overcome to be considered ‘The GOAT’. He has even beaten the footballing records of his Argentinian hero, Diego Maradona.

Reality TV and ‘Loose Woman’ star Stacey Solomon and her husband former ‘EastEnders’ actor Joe Swash have announced they were expecting their third child together, which is Stacey’s fifth.

And now ‘super slender’ Stacey has revealed that the baby is due in a month. You could not tell at all, so thanks for the big reveal before you were knee deep in nappies.

Stacey lovingly shared photos of her still miniature bump to her Instagram page, captioning “Coming soon… Much sooner than we thought.”

The former ‘I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here’ winner added, “When we found out we still wanted to have that first few months you usually would to adjust and get excited and enjoy it to ourselves, but that didn’t leave us with very long left. So this time next month we will be getting ready to say hello to a whole new pickle! So grateful. While we had some time off we thought we better take some memories before it’s too late.”

The well wishes have been pouring in from their celeb friends and family, although the funniest of them all was from Stacey’s ITV co-star Rylan who pitched, “Can this one be mine?” Gay icon Rylan is one of Stacey and Joe’s BFF’s so we hope he was joking. With three under 5 Stacey will be sincerely hoping he’s not!

MAXI JAZZ TRIBUTES POUR IN

Faithless singer Maxi Jazz died on Xmas Eve at the age of 65. A statement shared on the singer’s Instagram page, read: “We are heartbroken to say Maxi Jazz died peacefully at his home in South London last night. He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave proper meaning and message to our music. He was also a lovely human being with time for everyone and a wisdom that was both profound and accessible. It was an honour and, of course, a true pleasure to work with him. He was a brilliant lyricist, a DJ, a Buddhist, a magnificent stage presence, car lover, endless talker, beautiful person, moral compass and genius.” Reggae band UB40, paid tribute to the singer with a reference to his infamous ‘Insomnia’ single, saying: “A lovely guy, again who has gone too soon, but finally Maxi you can get some sleep.”

Not that exciting we hear you say? BUT...it has never been known for the Royals to follow a dress or colour protocol. Ever. But literally days after the Netflix documentary ‘Harry & Meghan’ aired the first royal public engagement saw almost all of the Royal Family wear the same burgundy colour - making a direct snub to Meghan’s pleas of ‘not being allowed to wear colour’. Ties, dresses, jackets... William, Kate, Princess Charlotte, Prince George, Pippa Middleton, Mike Tindall, Zara Tindall and their kids wore the same burgundy shade on their recent outing.

In the multi-million pound Netflix documentary ‘victim’ Meghan proclaimed she was forced to wear ‘beige’ during her royal visits and not allowed to wear colour so as not to overshadow the Queen.

The Royals remained tight lipped on the recent ‘Harry & Meghan’ documentary refusing to comment on accusations of ‘racism’ and ‘bullying’ within the Royal family. However, this shade really spoke volumes!

WHAT'S TRENDING... FOR HIM S/S23 FASHION

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL SHIRTS

Printed shirts were awash on the Spring/Summer 2023 catwalks with brands including Louis Vuitton and Amiri (pictured left) favouring the trend. Think Skulls, Hawaiian or Sports related logos like polo/baseball or bold and brazen like Diesel’s bowling shirt with it’s supersized logo (below left). Dolce & Gabbana went for bold sportswear shirts and T-shirts too reminiscent of preppy school days whereas Paul Smith went for out and from bottom.)

TRENCH WARFARE

The trench coat made a huge splash on all the SS/23 runways. The sophisticated and sleek coat that ‘never goes out of style’ was featured in Fendi (pictured right), Moschino, Givenchy, Burberry and Prada. It’s a great coat for all seasons as it’s long and waterproof, perfect for those April showers. Most designers favoured tan, beige or brown but the trench can work in any colourway as proved by Burberry’s dark grey pictured below and Topshop’s black version below.

FOR HER WHAT'S TRENDING... S/S23 FASHION #

Fashion for Spring/Summer 2023 is all about polar extremes ladies. On one hand you have the manly, tough utility and cargo wear dominating all the major shows including Versace and Miu Miu and then you have delicate, billowing, sheer fabrics taking centre stage at Christian Dior and Prada among others. Manly v Feminine. Hard v Soft. Here’s our pick of the top looks that rocked the S/S 23 runways and will be rocking your wardrobes this year.

TOTAL UTALITARIAN

The Net-a-porter site almost crashed when Frankie Shop’s multipocketed cargo trousers landed last year. This trend is set to continue well into 2023 with Fendi (pictured right), Givenchy and Versace all favouring beige, camel and khaki wear with multi-pockets and zips. Handy to

keep anything (and everything!) in if you want to go for a night out, sans handbag ladies. We counted 40 pockets on Marine Serre’s multi-tasking coat but preferred the more subtle approach to the trend from Diesel (pictured left) with just 14 pockets.

SHEER INDULGENCE

The trend for billowing, barely-there sheers on the runway blew us away. Underwear as outerwear is a trend that we will be seeing more of. Maybe it’s a throwback to the tough financial climate – we can get all sexy with our fashion and that makes things easier to handle. Our fashion editor’s favourite picks include Nensi Dojaka’s sheer dress (pictured right) and Ermanno Scervino’s white goddess look pictured below. Gucci also nailed the trend as shown by their trio of models indulging in sheer panelling.

RECIPE

‘CHILLIN’ CON CARNE

Warm up and chill in on those cold nights with this delicious chilli con carne recipe. What’s more it is only 387 calories per portion and has a 5 star rating on BBC Good Food, it’s the perfect comfort food to see you through the colder months!

INGREDIENTS

1 large onion

1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder (or 1 level tbsp if you only have mild)

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp ground cumin 500g lean minced beef

1 beef stock cube 400g can chopped tomatoes ½ tsp dried marjoram

1 tsp sugar

2 tbsp tomato purée 410g can red kidney beans plain boiled long grain rice soured cream, to serve

METHOD

1. Dice 1 large onion, cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. Peel and finely chop 2 garlic cloves.

2. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently, for about 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft, squidgy and slightly translucent. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder or 1 level tbsp mild chilli powder, 1 tsp paprika and 1 tsp ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, mince-sized lumps and there are no more pink bits. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew.

4. Crumble 1 beef stock cube into 300ml hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince

mixture. Open 1 can of chopped tomatoes and add these as well. Tip in ½ tsp dried marjoram and 1 tsp sugar, and add a good shake of salt and pepper. Squirt in about 2 tbsp tomato purée and stir the sauce well.

5. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy.

6. Drain and rinse 1 can of red kidney beans and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again, and gently bubble without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Taste a bit of the chilli and season. It will probably take a lot more seasoning than you think. Now replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving, and relax. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the flavours to mingle and the meat.

7. Serve with soured cream and plain boiled long grain rice.

WINE PAIRING

A beer would be the safest option to have with a chilli, but safe is boring! Instead opt for a Red Zinfandel, which is both rich and ripe, bursting with bramble fruit with just a touch of vanilla. These flavours create the perfect blend to mix with anything meaty.

A Beefsteak Club Malbec says it all in the name, the wine that is made for beef. Deep and vibrant with an intense nose of plum, damson and dark chocolate aromas. Lush and layered on the palate, with well-integrated oak and plenty of fine tannins, it will complement your chilli to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

A MAN CALLED OTTO

Otto Anderson, played brilliantly by Hollywood legend Tom Hanks, is a grumpy old man who has recently lost his wife and is seriously considering ending it all.

When a lively, young family moves in next door, he meets his match in the quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside-down.

From acclaimed screenwriter, David Magee, who was behind hit films including ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ and ‘Finding Neverland’ this film from the international bestselling book by Frederick Backman is witty, endearing and heart-warming; making viewers fall in love with the ‘grumpiest man in America.’

The characterisation is well thought out with exceptional performances by newcomer Rachel Keller as Marisol and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo from Netlix Series ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ as her super sweet and caring husband.

There will be laughs-a-plenty and it is a great film to see for any age group, much along the same lines as Tom Hanks other family-friendly biopic triumphs ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘The Terminal.’

As the trailer captions: “Life is a Journey. That is meant for sharing,” ‘A Man Called Otto’ reaffirms all that is good about life, family and friendships.

SAM SMITH – GLORIA

This upcoming fourth studio album by Brit singer/songwriter Sam Smith is set to be released on January 27th through Capitol Records. The two singles released from the album entitled ‘Love Me More’ and ‘Unholy’ (a collab with German singer Kim Petras) have already been well received, the latter achieving the number one spot in the singles chart in the UK, US, Canada and Australia.

The new album ‘Gloria’ has been called a “personal revolution for Smith”, containing a dazzling, sumptuous, sophisticated, unexpected and at times thrilling, edgy sound of Sam’s creative today.

Sam always writes and sings from the heart and no stone has been left unturned in this new outing with sex, lies, passion, self-expression and imperfection just some of the tracks subject matters. Deep stuff – it always is with Sam!

The album, his first since ‘Love Goes’ in 2020, was recorded between Los Angeles, London and Jamaica with Smith working with regular collaborator Jimmy Napes who has produced with Stormy, Alicia Keyes and Taylor Swift among others.

This album is set to be a belter and right up there with his inaugural album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ which scooped 4 awards at the MOBO’s including Best Album back in 2014.

We can’t wait to hear the 13-track album in all its glory and especially his first collaboration with fellow Brit Ed Sheeren in ‘Who We Love’ which has all the makings of another chart-topping hit.

SPARE

Prince Harry’s tell-all book ‘Spare’ is set to be released on January 10th and will be a warts-and-all expose on life in the Royal Family. How he managed to launch the cover and book synopsis without a murmur from the Royal Family begs belief!

The contents of the soon-to-be bestseller have not yet been revealed but everyone is hoping tricky subject matters including: Diana’s mysterious death in Paris, the assumption he is James Hewitt’s son and who was the ‘racist’ Royal Family member who questioned what colour Archie’s skin was going to be when Meghan was pregnant? All will be revealed on January 10th.... we sincerely hope!

Publishers Random House bill the autobiography as “raw, unflinching honesty, ‘Spare’ is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”

Prince Harry is supporting British charities with donations from his proceeds from the book. The Duke of Sussex has pledged to donate $1,500,000 to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers’ legacies, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry is also donating to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the amount of £300,000. Although this is a meagre amount in comparison to the staggering £38.5 million amount that the book is supposed to be netting.

RITA GETS HER HAPPY

Rita Ora is a worldwide, multi number one selling recording artist, singer, songwriter, actress and a household name in the UK since her stint as a judge on BBC’s The Voice.

At just 32-years-old Rita has acquired a net worth of £25 million, a £4 million home, five cars, including a Mercedes ML Class and a Cadillac XTS. Money aside, as Rita claims to not be into material possessions.... Rita has finally found her happy ever after. In August 2022 she walked down the aisle to her “soul mate” ‘Thor : Love and Thunder’ director Taika Waititi, aged 47.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Rita was born Miss Rita Sahatciu on November 26th 1990 in Pristina, Yugoslavia to parents Vera Bajraktari, a psychiatrist and Besnik Sahatciu an economist and pub owner. Moving to London aged one, Rita began performing from a young age and graduated from the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School, which produced numerous British pop stars such as Emma Bunton. Rising to fame debuting on DJ fresh number one single ‘Hot Right Now’ in 2012, Rita then released her own debut album entitled ‘Ora’ which also made it to the top of the charts, not only with the album but with two number one singles ‘RIP’ and ‘How We Do’.

She also achieved a chart record for the “Most Top Ten Singles by a Female Artist” with 13 in the top ten, overtaking musical icons Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark, who each lay claim to 12 top ten hits each.

CHEQUERED LOVE LIFE

Prior to meeting her husband New Zealand-born Waititi in 2021, Rita Ora was linked to a whole host of celebs including reality TV star Rob Kardashian, ‘Spiderman’ actor Andrew Garfield, producer Andrew Watt and ‘One Direction’ heartthrob Liam Payne. Rita also dated Scottish superstar DJ Calvin Harris and they released the smash hit “I Will Never Let You Down” together in 2013. Rita proclaimed at the time that this was the very first time she had ever been in love, but her world was quickly turned upside down when Harris publicly embarrassed Rita by announcing their split on social media before telling her - after tabloid pics of Rita partying with other men surfaced.

Broken-hearted Rita then had her world further torn apart as Harris placed a music ban on her from performing any songs they had made together. He finally lifted the music ban in 2018 and Rita was set to be full steam ahead on the final production and release of her long awaited second album ‘Phoenix’ when tragedy hit. Rita’s good friend, inspiration and musical collaborator, Swedish superstar DJ Avicci, devastatingly took his own life that year. Rita had worked with Avicci on his last track, “Let’s Be Lonely Together” and she has always been torn on whether she could have done more to save one of her best friends lives.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

Despite her hardships Rita still managed to release two multi-platinum albums, breaking into the tough world of acting with her performance as Mia in the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ franchise and touring worldwide.

EVER AFTER

It has not been all plain sailing as the star has made headlines for all the wrong reasons too. In 2018 with her controversial song ‘Girls’, where she proclaims that “sometimes, she just wants to kiss girls”. ‘Girls’ has been used by many women as a song about empowerment but the LGBT community found the track to be insensitive to bisexuality and Rita was pulled apart. She apologised to anyone who had been offended and explained that: “I am not one-sided, I’m open-minded... I am never going to hide it.”

In 2020 she suffered another major backlash for flouting lockdown rules by having a 30th birthday party at a restaurant in West London. It was discovered by the UK media and despite her public apology, Rita has had to endure a lot of hatred over the bash attended by 10 pals including model Cara Delevingne. “I still feel embarrassed,” she revealed. “It’s really hard for me to talk about it. I just wish I had made a different choice.”

After years of heartbreak and grief, Rita is finally with the husband that she has always wanted – she finally met up with Waititi again in Australia in 2021 at a friend’s party and they both knew they had definitely found “the one,” after a friendship lasting 10 years. And further good news in Ora and Waititi’s lives is they are trying for a baby. Unfortunately, the couple cannot conceive naturally and are going through rounds of IVF but they hope to bring good news ‘babywise’ soon. And there is the much anticipated third album on the cards this year.

Rita hints at it being November 2023, her birth month. Wife, pop star, actress, soonto-be mother... is there anything else for Rita to cross off her list?

STEP BACK

The 1970s are remembered as an era of cultural shifts and movements in all areas - especially fashion. The decade was all about rusty neutral shades, bell-bottom jeans, halter necks, platform heels, jumpsuits and boho everything. The fabrics were sumptuous - shearling, velvet, silk and suede. Psychedelic swirls and fringing, oh how I loved this decade.

Ok, so men’s fashion didn’t fare so well - those superlarge collars looked a little more costume-y than chic. Shiny spandex? Hip-hugging bell bottom trousers? Chest hair, pornstache, bright leisure suits, and skimpy short shorts are best forgotten. Yes, 70s men fashion was truly shocking, but silly trends are part of our history, aren’t they?

My sartorial recollections may have slipped into rose tinted memory but I truly believe these were fashion’s greatest years. Embracing eclectic, folkloric, and gender-neutral pieces brought a visual identity to the rebellious spirit of the time. The decade was quite simply bold and overstated. Yes, 70’s fashion was all about individuality, Vogue magazine even proclaimed: “There are no rules in the fashion game now.” This glamorous period also produced a slew of unforgettable, high-octane, high-profile style icons. Cher, Bianca Jagger, Jane Birkin, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones & Lauren Hutton made huge sartorial waves; this was the disco decade and an unabashed embrace of glamour.

BACK IN STYLE

Who remembers Sister Sledge capturing the fashions perfectly in their 1979 hit ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ – Halston, Gucci and Fiorucci! Disco, dancing and decadence reigned supreme and the hedonistic haunt, Studio 54 attracted the world’s most glamorous actors, musicians and models.

Think of the iconic designer names that were indelibly marked into history during this decade, like Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Furstenberg. This was the time when mass-market, trenddriven fashion became more readily available with Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba kickstarting the idea in London.

Another legendary designer to emerge at this time was Halston. Famous for his simple creations and languid fabrications including cashmere, satin and suede. Halston’s pieces belied their artfulness. His signature look was never-let-them-see-you-sweat glamour with structural integrity.

As ephemeral as trends are, they have a way of coming back–even the most polarizing ones! 2023 sees a nostalgic revival of 70s fashion. On the runway, bell silhouettes are a key component to making interesting silhouettes next year. Marc Jacobs plays on the iconic ’70s shape with flared-leg jeans with a mid-rise waist, featuring copper hardware and, of course, corduroy, because what would bellbottom pants be without it? As Pre-loved fashion moves from niche to mainstream, we’re all looking back to yesteryear for style inspiration. So long ready-towear, lets hear it for retro-to-wear.

DON LUIS

This traditional tapas and steak restaurant in the heart of Esher surpassed all our expectations. We had heard wonderful things about Don Luis and our recent visit here not only turned out to confirm this, but it was a complete taste sensation, bundles of fun and an insightful tutorial into traditional Spanish dining.

Don Luis Tapas serves only authentic Spanish food lovingly prepared and cooked by their head chef, Madrid-born Raul Domingo, who is completely passionate about food, having grown up in his family restaurant in Madrid and having run his own restaurant in London.

“I was born into the restaurant trade,” Raul discloses. “I know everything there is to know about Spanish cuisine....There are many regions in Spain all offering their own delicacies. Among these are Catalonia, Galicia and Andalucia.”

Raul therefore selects the finest dishes from each area and converts them into the best dishes for Don Luis.

Some of these include ‘Pimientos del Padron’, ‘Pollo con Romesco’ and ‘Pinchos Morunos’ a wonderful lamb dish.

Don Luis is a family-run restaurant, from the charming husband and wife team of Tidora and Diego, who are always on hand to oversee their customers have a top dining experience, with a combined 40 years in hospitality.

You can tell as soon as you walk in the door and are greeted

with a warm welcome and delicious aromas, that this restaurant is a cut above the rest.

It is well documented that Don Luis’ customers are well connected to Spain. “A lot of our customers have second homes there and the reason they come to visit us is because they can get food here as good as they can in Spain,” Tidora, co-owner of Don Luis, says.

“Raul has so many ideas of Spanish food and has created ‘Specials of the Week’ along with our main menu to offer customers the amazing flavours of Spain.”

In case you were unaware (as were we!) all Don Luis Tapas’ food is Spanish inspired, freshly prepared with quality ingredients from local producers and from Galicia and Madrid suppliers and every dish is cooked completely from scratch.

TAPAS TASTING

With over 30 dishes to choose from, it was hard to choose just a few for our tapas lunch as they all looked and sounded so tantalising.

The first dish we tried was ‘Gambas al Ali-oli’- prawns cooked in

RESTAURANT REVIEW SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 17 60

garlic, chilli, white wine and lemon. Served with fresh bread and Gambas al ajillo, this sizzling dish was devine and we were able to tuck into eight succulent king prawns, such a generous portion for tapas.

The next dish was ‘Croquetas de Jamon Iberico’ and the crispy coating with ali-oli topping was perfect. The cheese and Iberico ham filling oozed out of the crispy crumb – easily one of the best dishes on the menu.

RESTAURANT REVIEW SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 17 61

Next up was ‘Patatas Bravas’ a mainstay on most tapas menus and this ‘Don Luis’ dish was excellent with crispy chunky slices of potato with a delicious homemade tomato, garlic and mayo sauce drizzled on top. One of our tasters lived in Spain for 6 years and said this was easily the best potato bravas they had tested. Enough said.

The broad selection of Don Luis Menu included Paella and an abundance of Steak options. We opted for the ‘Paella Mixta’ which was chicken and seafood paella and it was well worthy of our 5 star review. There was plenty of meat, fish and the rice was cooked perfectly al dente with chilli, onion and mixed vegetables. The best bit about the dish was the plentiful supply of fresh seafood; the mussels, prawns and clams were to die for. Easily the most generous portions that we have ever experienced.

DELECTABLE DESSERTS

Choose from ‘Crema Catalana’ the best Spanish crème brulee, ‘Fondant De Chocolat’ chocolate fondant served with homemade vanilla ice-cream or the traditional Spanish almond cake served with vanilla ice-cream otherwise known as ‘Tarta De Santiago’.

The best of the bunch was the ‘Churros Con Chocolate’, which was perfectly crisped doughnutesque churros melted with a chocolate centre – a must try on their delectable menu.

REST & RECOUPERATE

Hello and Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a wonderful December.

As much as we have all probably overindulged in recent months, I have kind of enjoyed every second of it, and have come to terms with having more squishy bits than usual! There’s nothing that makes me feel more wholesome than enjoying delicious food with friends and family. I was very kindly invited to dine at The White Horse in Shere. Of course I jumped at the chance as it was one of the locations for ‘The Holiday’, one of Hollywood’s most festive and romantic movies.

RECOUPERATE

The White Horse is located in the idyllic village of Shere. The pub itself is a Grade II listed building which dates back to the 15th Century where it was first a farmhouse and then an Inn. Steeped in history, authentic timbers from Nelsons ship ‘Victory’ are thought to be part of the pub. There is a small bar area with some seating and the exact spot where Cameron Diaz and Jude Law enjoyed their date night. The restaurant area has lots of nooks and crannies and a gorgeous roaring fire which sets the scene for romantic dining. It is also very family friendly. The kids menu was the most extensive I have ever seen. They had a great variety from your usual roast dinner, to mini steak and chips, pasta with Beyond Meat balls and Moules Mariniere which my son was very excited about. I opted for a steak and ale pie which was made with the most deliciously flaky pastry, ample veggies and smooth creamy mash. Our waiter was so attentive he even asked me if I would like an extra pot of gravy. I love that attention to detail! Of course I said yes…is there anything more comforting than pie and mash?! I am not usually a desert person but I fancied a sweet treat so I went for the caramel banana waffle with butterscotch ice cream, which I ended up sharing with my daughter. (Are you even a Mum without a little person stealing some of your food?!) It was utterly scrumptious! I will definitely be coming back to this pub and I will definitely be bringing friends and family. It’s perfect for Winter and beyond.

Another place that I will be returning to this year is the Spa at Beaverbrook. You all know how much I love Beaverbrook and visit regularly to dine but have never managed to spa there. I recently visited the spa there and loved every second. It’s not cheap, but totally worth it. I took my Mum for a Women’s Wellness spa day which included full use of the facilities, lunch at the Pizzeria and a 1.5 hour massage and facial. I was not brave enough to use the outdoor pool even though it was heated, as it was a cold morning. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the use of the indoor pool and thermal areas. I also got to have a snooze on the most comfy bed in the relaxation area which engulfed me

like a cloud. After a chat with my therapist, the treatment was completely tailored to my needs which consisted mainly of melting away all the tension in my neck and shoulders. All the little details were thought of such as a relaxing foot scrub prior to the treatment, and a hand massage whilst the face mask was on, sublime! The facial products used were from a brand called Therapi which contains honey and propolis. Propolis is a resin like material made by bees which they extract from the buds of cone bearing trees and use to build hives. It is used for its regenerative and healing properties and suggested to be among nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants. I could do with some of that right now!

I would say this spa is on par with another favourite of mine, Pennyhill Park. If you are looking for a spa day then look no further. Take some time out for you, especially after this busy festive period. It’s the perfect excuse for some R and R.

TOP 2023 TRENDS

As a team, it is crucial that we’re always one step ahead when it comes to forecasting trends in the hair and fashion world. Working closely with designers at fashion week plays an important part but inspiration also comes from the world around us. For example, the Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ is giving us some iconic fashion moments and one of them is the skinny fringe the actress Jenna Ortega is rocking. ‘Emily in Paris’ has also updated her fringe to a wispy style in the latest series. This style works well with long hair but equally, you can combine it with a long bob. The flicked-out lob is going to be popular as we come

out of Winter. It should be long enough to sit just on your nape and then flick.

For colour, the full-head icewhite blonde is back thanks to ‘The House of Dragon’. Known as Targaryen blonde, this super icy blonde is so white it sparkles in the light. It’s a strong look and needs regular salon maintenance. If you are looking for something a little lower maintenance then a deep, rich mocha brown is for you. Hailey Beiber and Lily James are currently showing off these chocolate tones. This technique is perfect for clients that have previously had lighter pieces through the ends that want to feel more on trend for winter.

Q&A

1. I’ve begun to notice more split ends appearing. Is there anything I can do to seal these or do they need to be cut off?

In short; they need to be cut off. Once the hair has begun to split, the best way to avoid further damage is to cut above the split. This is one reason why hairdressers recommend 6-8 week appointments so that the damage doesn’t travel up the hair shaft. Prevention is better though, so make sure you use heat protection products and apply regular moisture treatments or masks to minimise damage. Cutting your hair will not make it grow faster, that is an urban myth. It will, however, cut off your split ends which could stop your hair from growing. If you don’t trim your split ends, they will eventually break your hair, making it shorter. Keeping your hair trimmed will prevent this from happening and result in happier, healthier hair.

2. I received a scalp brush in a Secret Santa and no idea what to do with it. Can you advise?

Yes, a scalp brush is a great addition to your haircare routine. It can improve hair growth, stimulate the scalp, promote circulation, reduce tension, strengthen hair, improve mood, help make products more effective, reduce tension and improve the nervous system. Using the brush does not only provide a scalp massage but can also increase the thickness of hair and reduce stress. Plus it works on all hair types and is easy to use. Make sure there are no tangles in your hair before stepping into the shower. Once the shampoo has been massaged into the scalp, take the brush and massage in soft, small circular movements. Remove the brush and shampoo the remaining length of the hair. You can use the brush to comb out any knots before rinsing and applying your conditioner.

IF YOU ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP AND LOST THE SPARKLE THEN IT’S SPARK BACK.

DATE NIGHTS

Happy New Year darlings. I love a New Year’s resolution and love feeling like you get a fresh slate come January. I have a feeling that in terms of dating 2023 is going to be a BIG one. Lots of dating trends and love of new relationships forming. January is time for reflection and healing so get your self-help books and start that workout programme so come Spring you are feeling great and ready to get back out there and find your true love. Once you are ready to start dating next comes the actual date! So here are my top 5 date night options for a range of budgets. It’s important to remember date night is less about the money spent and more about the effort.

1. DINNER DATE

Now I realise you may think this is standard and boring, but it doesn’t have to be. Do your research of a wonderful local restaurant with fresh local ingredients, family run or somewhere you have heard about and really want to try but no fast food or chain restaurants, they can suck the romance out of any date. To elevate the date - research the menu and read the reviews beforehand and make sure there are options for you and your date and you get a feel for the place. Arrive at the restaurant at least 15-20 mins early and speak to the waiter, ask if there are any recommendations on the food and what the most popular dishes are. Speak to the sommelier and ask if there are any recommendations for the food you think you are going to choose, what are the most popular wines. When your date arrives they will be impressed by your knowledge. Men pay for the date. DO not accept half and if you have a voucher excuse yourself at the end and say you are using the bathroom and go pay the bill away from the table. If you can’t afford the bill, then don’t go to that restaurant! No one expects Nobu every date. Small independent restaurants are usually great value and you get a better experience but not paying for the date is a romance killer.

2. MOVIE NIGHT

Again, may sound simple but your effort can elevate your movie night to the next level. First set the scene. You will need low lighting, candles and nice smells. Freshly popped popcorn, homemade mulled wine on the stove, you want all of their senses to be tingling well before the movie even starts. You need a nice comfy couch and a big blanket that is soft, and you can cuddle up under. No synthetic material that will make you both sweat. You will need snacks and beverages ready to go. Get a variety of options including sweet and savoury. Bubbles or alcohol like sparkling Prosecco are winners. Make sure the TV is clean. No dust or fingerprints on the screen. Now each of you write down and add 5 movies to a bowl and once a week for 10 weeks you randomly pick out the one to watch. If the sound on your TV is rubbish, then you can get a soundbar on Amazon. There are a range of budgets but even the ones for less than £30 are good and great sound when watching a movie takes the experience to the next level.

3. LEARN A NEW SKILL

Learn a new skill or take a class together. There are loads of painting and wine nights, origami, book clubs etc. popping up all over. Even if you have never painted this is a fun activity that is still intimate and interesting,

and you can have a giggle at the pictures afterwards if you don’t take it too seriously. To elevate this date then don’t tell your date where you are going. You pick them up in a deluxe taxi and have a bottle of bubbles waiting to drink en route. There is something extremely romantic about drinking bubbles in the back of a luxury car and really takes the date to the next level. You will also have time to connect and speak in the car and be fully relaxed and ready for your class once you arrive.

4. ANTIQUE HUNTING, MARKETS AND A ROAST

What better way to spend a Sunday day date than wondering Antique Shops, browsing the lovely Markets followed by a delicious roast in a pub with a fire. The good thing about browsing for Antiques is there is no pressure to buy so you really can relax and enjoy the experience. I have wasted many an afternoon with my partners in the nooks and crannies of an Antique shop, wandering the local farmer’s markets followed by a big roast and bottle of red wine to finish off the perfect day. It’s intimate, cost effective and very romantic.

5. DAY TRIP TO PARIS

Before you dismiss the idea, I promise you can go to Paris for the day and have the most wonderful time for £350 all in. You grab the first train from London at 6:31am and will be in the centre of Paris before 10am. Then spend the day wondering the beautiful streets, eating French street food and drinking the most wonderful coffee and wine. Not to mention the museums and galleries, most of which are free to attend. You travel back on the last train at 7pm and are back in London before 9pm. A nightcap in The Pullman Hotel bar at St Pancras before heading home with the most wonderful memories and a date story that both of you will remember for ever.

IN SUMMARY

Dating isn’t strictly for singles. The biggest advice I give couples is to continue date night even in your relationship. There is a direct correlation between the healthiness of a relationship and how often they take the time to still have date night, it’s that important. If you are single, never forget to take yourself on dates too! Going to a gallery, class, concert, restaurant, cinema alone is extremely liberating and a wonderful form of self-care. Until next month darlings, remember you deserve nothing less than true love.

IF YOU CAN’T

SO LET’S MAKE IT WORK

Welcome to the doom and gloom of Jan! Christmas is done, the decorations are down and suddenly our houses are looking really bare and quite depressing. I always find the new year is the time I look around my home and decide on the projects I want to tackle in my home. For me this year I looked at the family room, the chaos room and the site of board games, dress-up and lego stacked to the side of the room finally became too much! Now luckily for me I’m a designer, so I have design solutions for every situation constantly rattling round my head and I always knew what this room needed. So I have now drawn up joinery plans to create some much needed storage, with gorgeous lighting and some fun elements for the kids and my joiners are cracking on. For non-design/normal people, this can be a big headache of where to start and seems too overwhelming to even begin!

Now 2023 might also have been the year for when you were planning your next big house move to gain more space, better flow and function or maybe just something more attractive. I imagine many of us with the economy in its current state are rethinking these big plans. Left feeling slightly depressed with a home they were hoping to leave behind but are now stuck with for the foreseeable future. Even without the economy crisis, the cost of moving is huge, forget the huge mortgage costs, you have estate agent fees, solicitor fees, moving fees and of course stamp duty. So if you can make your current home work, then this could be a better option and luckily for you I’m going to tell you how.

EXTENSIONS

So first up the most obvious transformation and probably the projects I work the most on are: extensions. If you have the external space and planning permission is likely to be granted, then extending your home is a good option for providing more space.

My biggest design grievance is that extensions are only successful if the internal space layout is right. I have seen so many times a very expensive square box added to the end of a home without actually helping the layout at all, and in some instances it makes it worst. The central spaces

HOME & INTERIORS

MOVE, LET’S IMPROVE!

in the home are now even darker than before as they are further from the light. Extensions are expensive, you need to make sure your internal layout is working it’s very hardest to get the most out of this very expensive extra square footage you’re adding. Plonking a dining table in your new extension and enjoying some extra dining space in my opinion is a gigantic waste of money. When we work with clients, we take our clients through a very important step called our “Drill Down Chat”, where we literally find out exactly what they want from this renovation, why they’re doing it and what every member of the family or household needs to get out of this change. This then allows us to completely maximise this very precious, extra space in our space planning phase. As I have mentioned before, sometimes the space is already in your home and it’s just how you configure your home that makes the difference.

SPACE CONFIGURATION

Which leads me to my next transformative change, re-configuring your existing rooms. Walls up and down in the wrong place can have a huge impact on how you feel and move in your home. We have all seen Kirstie and Phil walk round homes knocking on internal walls to see if they are structurally viable to be removed. It’s true if you’re current home is made up of lots of pokey rooms that don’t get properly utilised, then combining spaces can make a vast difference. The common change is the wall between a second reception room and kitchen, by removing the dividing wall you can create (with the right internal layout) a fantastic family room, where you can all be together and have space to spread out. The same can also be true of putting up walls. The common, long living room is a very difficult space to achieve a successful furniture layout and it often results in one half becoming wasted space. This is often a perfect room to divide up, giving you an extra space to turn into a study/playroom or spare bedroom or even all three with the right storage! If you want flexibility on how the space is used then uniquely design doors or dividers give you the flexibility of having the space open or closed off.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 17 77

STORAGE

I am a huge fan of built-in bespoke furniture, now it isn’t cheap but again designed in the right way it can make the biggest difference to a room. This year in our projects, we have added libraries with hidden desks, bars and coffee stations, alcove beds with hidden teenage gaming areas, joinery framing sofas, beds and doors and my personal favourite the hidden bed. The hidden bed was a great multifunctional use of the back of an unused living room. There is a mid-install, sneak peak below (stay tuned for the reveal). This house in Maida Vale wasn’t huge but it did have some wasted space. By adding a hidden bed with lots of storage and bookcases either side it can now be used as a study during the day and a guest room at night, wait till you see the wallpaper we chose!

If you don’t want to see a row of floor to ceiling cupboards then hide them with a clever wall treatments like we did in our Devon project, it’s beautiful and useful! The point is that joinery not only offers great storage solutions to clear away the clutter, but it can hide furniture and allow you to create dual or even triple use spaces. And if you light them as well, then the impact in a room is off the chart, amazing!

NEW ROOM LAYOUTS

Sometimes you just don’t have your room layout right. When you’ve lived in a home for a while, it can be hard to see your rooms with fresh eyes. I have walked into many clients homes and instantly known their existing layout is wrong. Just because we see pictures of rooms laid out in certain ways doesn’t mean that all rooms follow the same churned out layouts. Spatial planning is vital if you want to change your space and maximise its use. Here are a few changes we’ve made to rooms:

Combined a kitchen island/table. Usually, the kitchen island is its own entity and the dining table is then positioned further down the room. By adding the table onto the island, it keeps everything inline and concise, freeing up more space for another use.

Add a banquette to the kitchen space is another good space saver, dining tables and chairs in the middle of rooms take up space, move it to a wall, create a stylish banquette and you also gain so extra useful storage.

Move the bed away from the wall. It may seem odd to have a bed in the middle of the room, but it allows another space behind the bed to be created. In our new construction project in Epsom, this is rather grandly allows us to create a mini art gallery for the couples collection. But this space can also be used to hide a secret dressing room or even an ensuite.

Furniture on wheels! Now I know this seems like a funny idea, but half the problem with a room is that once you’ve put something there it’s fixed and your space is then defined. If, however that fixed piece becomes moveable, think how

HOME & INTERIORS SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 17 78
flexible that space then becomes. Sofas, tables and even kitchen islands can be moved out the way, desks can be wheeled out during the table and hidden at night, the options are endless and your home will feel so different and unique as you move everything around!

COHESIVE DESIGN

Finally, sometimes just changing the aesthetics of a room is enough to give it a new lease of life.

When I’m working in a small space, I will often paint everything the same colour and that can be light or dark. This allows the walls, ceiling and woodwork to blend into each other, creating the illusion of space. Being considerate with the design of a room is so important, it can be so tempting to be drawn to online purchases without taking time to decide the concept and layout you want for your space.

FORGOTTEN ROOOMS

Even in the smallest of homes I have found sad, unforgotten rooms that are left to fill with clutter and chaos, claiming to be the storage room or the dumping ground!

We know how expensive square footage is, so we cannot afford to leave these, poor sad rooms behind. The transformations of these spaces are endless. Our recent Surrey project had a very sad, unloved basement. A room to dump the laundry, kids kit bags, running machine and endless boxes; it was very unloved! Although we added an extension to this home, as their kids got older they still really craved an adult living space where they could relax with friends and escape the buzzing open plan space. And suddenly it was clear that the forgotten room was the place to do it. Below are our joinery concepts demonstrating the power of incredible joinery and a rich jewel colour palette. The rooms is being completed as you read so I can’t wait to share with you the transformation.

If you’ve read all this and you still feel overwhelmed, then contact us and we’ll lead you through the whole transformative journey. Contact us:  info@sadiepizzeyinteriors.com or visit us at  www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com.

Your JANUARY Astrology Forecast from Pia Louisa JANUARY 2023

Aries

21 MAR – 20 APR

2023 is going to be all about protecting what you value, Aries. You have finally reached a place in your life where you feel secure in who you are and what you have. New things are bound to enter your life this year but don’t forget to nurture what you already have. As you implement your new plans in 2023, you will realise you have the skills and capabilities to reach your goals. You are on the right track. As an Aries, you can sometimes be prone to stalling and procrastinating. These traits aren’t going to disappear, but they are things you will likely need to work on. By October, things will be moving faster, and you will become an extremely busy person.

Taurus

21 APR – 20 MAY

This year sees you withdrawing from things that no longer serve you, Taurus. Over the past few months, you have grown as a person and now know that there are people and things that don’t have a place in your life anymore. If you have been feeling an imbalance in your love life lately, don’t fret, as 2023 sees your love life flourishing, particularly in the month of June. Romance doesn’t always feel particularly natural for a Taurus, so the beginning of the year may seem slow in that department, but by summer, your love life will be booming! It’s good to remember the influence you have over others as well, Taurus. Make sure to use your leadership powers for good in 2023.

Hot Stars!

Gemini

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

2023 is going to be a time of new opportunities, choices, and at times, illusion, Gemini. There are likely to be lots of options you are going to have to choose from this year, so bear in mind what is best for you and your family. A trait you will have to work on is paranoia, as Geminis are known to feel as if everyone is talking about them behind their backs. Make sure to remember to focus on yourself and not worry about other people’s words or actions. If you have been resisting any changes happening in your life, now is the time to let go and embrace the new. By February, these changes will feel like second nature. The beginning of 2023 is going to be your busiest time!

Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

Are you resisting change, Cancerian? All signs point to yes! 2023 is going to bring big changes for you, but they will only work once you get on board with them. When it comes to your hobbies: 2022 saw you starting a new skill, but 2023 sees you becoming a master of your craft and moving onto the next level. Be confident in your abilities and know that you are getting better and better each day. A trait to work on this year would be to express yourself more emotionally. Some people view Cancerians as cold-hearted; therefore, this is the time to show the world your softer side by being more sensitive with your words. There’s more to you than meets the eye.

Leo24 JULY – 23 AUG

2023 is going to bring comfort and financial security for you, Leo. Even though you are known to love the spotlight, this year is all about family and feeling happy with what you have. Quiet introspection will be very valuable to you this year, especially during September. By doing this, you will learn that you don’t always need to have all eyes on you to be happy. Finally, that little spark of imagination that makes you who you are is going to be turned into an action plan in the next few months. You’ve gone through your discovery phase and have worked out what you want; now is the time to make it happen! Explore your options and carefully plot out the path ahead.

Virgo

24 AUG – SEPT 3

As a Virgo, you are very traditional, which isn’t going to change in 2023. You know what you want and aren’t afraid to tell the world. A peaceful life is ahead of you this year, with a quiet stillness approaching, especially during July. 2022 was all about change for you, while 2023 will be settled and stable, giving you the chance to work on yourself in a different way. You are likely to find yourself doing it all this year, branching out into fields you aren’t familiar with. This is all going to come very naturally to you; therefore, don’t expect any major changes, but trust that you are moving in the right direction. You’re not going to have one specific interest during 2023; you are going to try everything and make your mind up when you are done!

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 17 90

Libra

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

Libras are extremely diplomatic, a skill you will use greatly in 2023. Get ready to expect some conflicts this year, with you as a mediator and mentor to those who need extra help. Overall, your 2023 is going to be filled with an abundance of joy and love. It may be a while away, but it is clear that your 2023 Christmas is going to be one of the most magical times of your life! A trait to work on this year would be your pessimism. It’s natural to have days when you feel down, but make sure you don’t become cynical and only expect the worst. Remember, good days are just around the corner. It often takes a while for dreams to come true, so have faith in the timing of life.

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

2023 is going to be a time of seclusion for you, Scorpio. Lots of thoughts and feelings came up in 2022, and you now need time away from everyone to work out how you feel about this situation. If you have gone through a period of excess lately, now is the time to restore moderation in your life and get back to how you previously were. Finally, you are going to have two periods of time this year where you are going to feel renewed and ready to take on the world! The first one is going to be in May, as you are likely to have a busy summer with lots of energy needed, and the second one will be in November, preparing you for another busy Christmas.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

Have you been feeling like your life is one big competition, Sagittarius? If your answer is yes, then it comes as no surprise, as the stress you have been putting on yourself recently to be the best version of yourself has really gotten to you. 2023 is going to be all about building yourself back up again. The emotional pain you have felt over the last few months has caused you to give up slightly. This is all down to the fact that you have over-committed yourself and haven’t had time to focus on your well-being. Now is the time to stop and take some time for yourself. Let this new year bring you peace and allow yourself to relax.

Aquarius

21 JAN – 19 FEB

2023 is going to be all about self-sufficiency for you, Aquarius! Relying on others doesn’t sit right with you, and this year you are going to be even more independent than you were in 2022. Your inner calling will present itself to you, and your life path is going to change. Expect the unexpected and be open to the new opportunities you are being guided towards. Re-establish your sense of self by doing things that are in line with your values. We all lose ourselves from time to time, but by August, you will connect with your who you are deep down again. Remember to do activities that feed your soul and ground you. Whether that be alone or with friends, build yourself up again.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

Your shadow self took over 2022 Capricorn, and now you must take the new year back. A shadow side is the part of you that focuses on the negatives and forgets to enjoy life. Luckily, you are now opening your mind up and allowing your curious nature to guide your way. Be open to anything in 2023 Cap! You are going to correct any wrongs you may have made and become a new version of yourself. Take action and resolve any problems you have going on. By March, you will have everything you were hoping for throughout all of 2022. What you must remember is to do what feels right in the moment. Don’t worry about the future; focus on your present.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20

MAR

This year will be full of inner harmony, Pisces! External noise was a source of stress in 2022, but this year you will learn how to be happy with just yourself as you are. You are going to need to use your determination in 2023, as not everything is going to come easy. You’re likely to find yourself up against people who have different views from you but using your inner strength: you will find a way to stand your ground. Remember that isolation can be a good thing. Take some time to focus on yourself by stepping away from the outside world for a while. Know that by April, you will be energised and ready for a new project.

Hilarious collages of celebs have emerged on social media of late showing that money can indeed buy beauty. From Rihanna to Lana Del Ray the pictures compare the celebrities looking their best strutting their stuff down a red carpet with all their adoring fans compared to an image of them before fame and fortune looking….let’s just say, not so great. The pictures are enough to make you realise that all the glitz and glamour of their world is nothing but an illusion and we can all feel better knowing that they weren’t born with it.
