everyone’s talking about... PARIS HILTON WELCOMES FIRST BABY

Paris Hilton and husband Carter Reum have had a baby boy by surrogacy, Hilton’s first child and Reum’s

The socialite took to social media to make the announcement on January 25th showing a snap of her baby boy gripping her thumb.

Paris, 41, captioned the post: “You are already love beyond words,” with a blue heart emoji also detailing, “it’s a dream to be a mother.”

Paris has been very open about her desire to be a mother in recent years. She revealed in December her and Reum, also 41, had undergone in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) during the Covid-19 pandemic as both of them desired to be parents. Reum again, as he already has a 10-year-old daughter with former partner and reality star Laura Bellizzi.

The couple have as yet not revealed the tot’s name, weight or details of the birth or surrogate. Or indeed why they chose to use

Entrepreneur and venture capitalist Reum wed Paris, heir to the Hilton Hotel empire, in a lavish ceremony at her grandfather’s Bel Air

MADONNA ANNOUNCES GLOBAL TOUR

‘Material girl’ Madonna has announced her Global 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour which could well be her last, sadly.

The Queen of Pop, now aged 64, has had four decades of hits and the sure to be sellout 35 city destination tour begins on July 15th 2023 in the US and comes to the O2 in London from October 14th – October 18th if you are lucky enough to get a coveted ticket.

This is her first global tour since the ‘Madame X’ tour in 2020 which didn’t have any of her old songs from the best-selling albums ‘True Blue’ and ‘Like A Prayer.’

Many pundits are saying it could be her last world tour as Madge approaches her 65th birthday in August.

Live Nation, organising the tour, is selling tickets for London O2 shows starting at £93 now at www.livenation.co.uk.

BIEBER SELLS CATALOGUE FOR $200M

Justin Bieber is the latest in a line of musical artists to sell his back catalogue of music in a deal worth a reported $200m (£162m).

He is not alone in this quest for money, fast! Other artists include Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Blondie who have also made the ambitious move selling rights to their songs.

Justin Timberlake, our cover star, made £75.5m from selling his back catalogue last year while Springsteen was the biggest earner at £350m.

Bieber, aged 28, is also only tied in for 290 title songs released before December 2021 and he can still earn more money and royalties from any music released post this date with his label at Universal Music Group.

Congrats Bieber and British music house Hipgnosis Song Fund which are now the proud owners of Canadian star’s back catalogue.

FERGIE BACK IN THE FOLD

Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as ‘Fergie’ is back in the Royal Family’s good books having been officially accepted by Queen Consort, Camilla Parker Bowles.

According to reports, Fergie the ex-wife of controversial royal Prince Andrew and mother to Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, has become a good comfort and friend to Camilla and has been invited to royal events and family gatherings at Sandringham.

A source said: “Camilla likes Sarah. They’re both gentry. They share a love of horses and Fergie will be smart enough to play the game with Camilla and realise she is the power behind the King.”

When Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were alive these meetings never happened and the fact that Fergie has been a stalwart to Camilla and supported her ex-husband Andrew through his tough times of late, has seen her come into a more positive light.

Fergie was unfairly nicknamed the ‘Duchess of Pork’ by tabloid press in the 1980’s and vilified over a toe sucking paparazzi shot with her ex-boyfriend that made the front pages of numerous newspapers.

She has definitely made a full and dignified comeback!

Welcome back Fergie.

BRITNEY WORRIES FANS

Britney Spears, 41, is back in the news again this month for all the wrong reasons.

This time she posted a pic of herself half naked and then deleted her Instagram account after confessing her love for ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

She also changed her name from ‘Britney Spears’ to ‘Red River’ shortly before deleting the account on the 24th January.

This behaviour on top of her snapping two full frontal nude pics of herself lying in the bath has worried fans. In the snaps she had her hands over her chest and a tiny pink flower covering her modesty.

Fans are saying that she may not be coping well with her new-found freedom. It was only in 2021, the 13-year conservatorship that had been hanging over Britney was finally lifted by the LA Courts.

Prior to this her father Jamie had controlled every aspect of Britney’s life.

RECIPE

GRILLED STEAK SALAD WITH PESTO & CROSTINI

This classic Italian recipe by Jamie Oliver is bursting with fresh herb flavour. Below is the standard way to make but you can also add pine nuts and parmesan cheese shavings if desired.

Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

(makes 2 portions)

2 x 200 g matured rib-eye steaks

olive oil, sea salt freshly ground black pepper

1 sprig fresh rosemary, leaves

picked and chopped

½ tablespoon dried oregano

2 slices ciabatta bread

2 tablespoons green pesto

1 clove garlic, cut in half

100 g mixed salad leaves

Juice of 1 lemon

METHOD

1. Lay the steaks on a chopping board and rub with olive oil. Season and sprinkle with the rosemary and oregano. Cover with greaseproof paper and bash lightly with a rolling pin until the steaks are slightly flattened out and the herbs and seasoning are pressed into the meat.

2. Put a large griddle pan on a high heat and, as it’s heating up, toast the ciabatta on both sides. Keep the toast warm. Shake any crumbs out of the griddle pan, then return to the heat and lay the steaks in it, side by side.

3. Cook for about 8 minutes, turning every minute, for

a medium steak, or a little longer if you like your meat more cooked.

4. Lift the steaks out of the pan and leave to rest somewhere warm.

5. Spoon a tablespoon of pesto onto each plate and smear out across the plate with the back of a spoon.

6. Place a steak on each plate and rub the toasted ciabatta with the garlic, drizzle with a little olive oil and put a piece on top of each steak.

7. In a mixing bowl, toss the salad leaves with the lemon juice, a lug of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.

8. Divide the salad between the plates and serve.

WINE PAIRING

We would recommend a red wine with herbal flavours like Cabernet Franc to go with this Jamie Oliver dish. This French classic offers enough green notes to complement the pesto sauce’s strong green flavours without being too overbearing. Two other good wines matches are Chianti Classico and Beaujolais as they offer ample herbaceous flavours to complement the Pesto when served with steak.

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

MAGIC MIKE’S LAST DANCE

Magic Mike aka Channing Tatum strips off his clothes for director Steven Soderbergh one last time in this final follow-up to 2015’s ‘Magic Mike XXL.’

This time around Tatum’s character Mike Lane has fallen on hard times (oh no we hear you say!) and takes an opportunity to travel to London to fulfill a request for a wealthy woman (Pinault played by Salma Hayek) only to discover she has ulterior motives. (oh dear!)

Following a business deal that went bust, leaving Mike broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida he is left desolate.

For what he hopes will be one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with Pinault. With everything on the line, once Mike discovers what she truly has in mind, will he - and the roster of hot new dancers he’ll have to whip into shape – will he be able to pull it off?

In true Magic Mike style we are pretty sure he can.

But who knows, in the what promises to be – the final installment of this glossy movie franchise, whether Mike can or not.

Out on February 10th this will be a sure fired hit with the ladies (and gay guys!) this Valentine’s Day. High brow it is not... but it is fun and frivolous!

GORILLAZ – CRACKER ISLAND

Animated indie rockers Gorillaz are back with a bang after a 7-year hiatus. Daman Albarn of ‘Blur’ fame is the cartoon frontman of Gorillaz and has promised that the groups new performances on Cracker Island will “utilise AR technology and revolutionise the very concept of musical performance.” It does all sound pretty ambitious, but this is definitely not beyond Gorillaz’ reach. Bassist Murdoc wrote on the eve of the band’s eighth album release, “To all our followers, get ready for the biggest Times Square takeover since that other gorilla smashed the place up... thanks to the techies at Google, we’ve created the music video event of the century, so don your pink robes and come see Gorillaz like you’ve never seen us before. The future is nigh!” The performances were directed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett of ‘Tank Girl’ fame and the Emmy nominated director FX Goby. The spectacle was shown in 86 different countries. And boy was it a spectacle!

The first 3 tracks from the new Cracker Island LP have been prereleased including new smash hit ‘Skinny Ape’ and they sound as good as the band’s original 90’s hits ‘Dare’ and ‘Dirty Harry’ that won them a Grammy and 4 MTV Music Awards.

Since their 1998 launch, Gorillaz have scooped 27 international awards after being nominated for 80. Expect some more awards after this album!

CODE NAME SAPPHIRE

In this heartwarming tale of what it takes to survive, a woman must rescue her cousin’s family from a train bound for Auschwitz. This is a riveting story of bravery and resistance.

Set in 1942, Hannah Martel has narrowly escaped Nazi Germany after her fiancé was killed in a pogrom. When her ship bound for America is turned away at port, she has nowhere to go but to her cousin Lily, who lives with her family in Brussels. Fearful for her life, Hannah is desperate to get out of occupied Europe. But with no safe way to leave, she must return to the dangerous underground work she thought she had left behind.

Seeking help, Hannah joins the Sapphire Line, a secret resistance network led by a mysterious woman named Micheline and her enigmatic brother Matteo. But when a grave mistake causes Lily’s family to be arrested and slated for deportation to Auschwitz, Hannah finds herself torn between her loyalties.

How much is Hannah willing to sacrifice to save the people she loves?

Inspired by incredible true stories of courage and sacrifice, ‘Code Name Sapphire’ is a powerful novel about love, family and the unshakable resilience of women in even the hardest of times.

Billed as “a heart-wrenching exploration of the decisions women must make when their loyalties are put to the test in the most unimaginable of circumstances.” This page turner of a book will no doubt be another best seller.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE BRINGING SEXY BACK

“Talented singer, songwriter, acclaimed actor, loving husband, doting father and all round nice guy,” was my response for putting JT on the front cover of the February issue to my unconvinced other half. Should I have also mentioned he’s smoking hot and dances like a god?!

While it seems not everyone is a fan of Justin – you have to admit he’s made a seamless transition from squeeky clean boyband member from his ‘N’ Sync days 20 years ago to the global superstar he is today.

His dancefloor smash ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ reached the number one spot and stayed there for 10 weeks becoming the most downloaded track of the year. He also garnered three consecutive number one singles with ‘Sexy Back’, ‘My Love’ and ‘What Goes Around... Comes Around’ from FutureSex/Love Sounds –unprecedented for a musical artist. He has collaborated with music greats including Jay Z, Beyonce, Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Romeo Santos and Janet Jackson.

And has also made the bold (and highly lucrative move!) to sell his entire music catalogue for a staggering $100m (£75.5m) in May last year, following in the footsteps of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Neil Young and Blondie who have also made the ambitious move.

ALBUM INCOMING

Despite releasing a number of hit singles and collabs, Justin has had a 5 year break from creating albums. His last studio album ‘Man of the Woods’ was his fourth back in 2018.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 26
FEATURES

But luckily for us, Justin is back with a new album!

He has been vague about his new album’s exact release date, although his legendary music producer buddy Timbaland recently revealed to his 3.9m Instagram fans it was definitely coming this year.

“Sometimes magic can’t be explained you just have to witness it!!!! Coming 2023!!!!” Timbaland said tagging his pal Justin. According to reports, Justin has already penned 8 tracks from the new, as yet untitled album.

MAKING MOVES & MOVIES

Appreciating Justin’s many talents (including those snake hips and aforementioned killer dance moves) it is safe to say he was probably always destined for greatness.

The petite, curly haired, Memphis born singer was famous at 11 on ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ show and talent contest ‘Star Search.’ He was then swiftly catapulted into superstardom joining boyband ‘N’ Sync aged only 14. The group enjoyed 3

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 27

chart topping albums before going their separate ways in 2002.

Since then, he’s launched arguably one of the top solo singing careers to date. Justin has already clocked up nine Grammys - earned since going solo – and all three of his studio albums have gone multiplatinum with 88 million sold in total to date. At 42, Justin has clearly figured out his strengths. He has also figured out his weaknesses. Love. He succumbed to unprecedented media attention for his tumultuous love life, dating a string of Hollywood A-Listers including Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson and finally actress Jessica Biel, whom he married in 2012, after dating for five years. It’s not always been plain sailing for the star as he readily admits.

“A lot of girls have cheated on me in the past, so it’s hard for me to trust,” he admitted. “But once I fall, I fall hard.” Could he be referring to the infamous Britney Spears video ‘Cry Me A River’? Justin has never admitted it publicly but the model who starred in the hit music video looked uncannily like his ex Spears, a huge hint that she was the one who broke his heart in 2002 by being unfaithful.

It seems like life with Jessica is for the long term. The power couple have just celebrated their ten year wedding anniversary.

Justin posted a beautiful tribute to his wife on their special milestone day:

“10 years ain’t enough! You make me a better husband father every day! I love you so much you beautiful human! Run it back!”

Justin was quoted in an interview talking about his wife saying, “True love, to me, is when she’s the first thought that goes through your head when you wake up and the last thought that goes through your head before you go to sleep.” Lucky girl…!

The couple have two sons; Silus (aged 7) and Phineas (aged 2) and haven’t ruled out expanding their broodalthough Jessica is currently juggling being a mum with her acting career so it may well be in a few years. Despite playing the voice of Branch in the 2016 DreamWorks hit ‘Trolls’ Justin hasn’t performed as a main character in a feature film since his 2011 comedy ‘Bad Teachers’ with ex Cameron Diaz. He hasn’t ruled out returning to act on the big screen though. He won critical acclaim in ‘The Social Network’ playing Napster co-founder, Sean Parker, charting Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook’s rise to success. He also played a commendable lead ‘Alpha Dog’ and in ‘Friends With Benefits’ with ‘Bad Moms’ star Mila Kunis.

UK BOUND

With acting seemingly on a backburner for now, Justin is being hotly tipped to be doing a world tour for his new 2023 album that could well bring him to the UK, as he calls England “home from home” as it’s where he got his first ever solo number one with ‘Sexy Back’ in 2006.

Expect Justin’s tour to be towards the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024. We can’t wait to have the sexy one back!

THE MODERN DATING GAME

When I was younger, I had always dreamed about dating a boy in a 50’s America, Pleasantville type situation. He’d pick me up, we’d go see a movie and afterwards we’d go to the local diner and share a milkshake with two straws. He’d drop me off at home, walk me to my door, kiss me, and then we’d be going ‘steady’ - whatever that means.

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 34
FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 35

We millennials have now created a culture where our lives revolve around being online. Even dating.

We think that, ‘Netflix and Chill’ is an acceptable first date when we know that there is going to be no Netflix or no Chill happening. We have lost interest in intimacy and would rather settle for a one-night stand where the guy comes and goes (quite literally) and then we don’t hear from him again until our phone lights up at 3am two months later with a text from him saying ‘hey, wyd?’ The problem we face with everything being online is that we don’t actually know how to meet people anymore. You can’t meet a guy in a bar anymore without him expecting an invite back to your house because he’s bought you a vodka and lemonade. So we sign up to Tinder, Match.com or Plenty of Fish telling ourselves we’re doing it in a tongue and cheek kind of way. We choose our 5 best pictures, spend a good 10 minutes wondering what to put in ourbio before just settling on our occupation and then begin to swipe.

After matching with a couple of guys getting the usual, ‘hey, you ok?’ you get one with an interesting opening line. You exchange a number of pleasant messages back and forth, share a bit of banter and you start to think, ‘Oh this guy’s alright.’ Then you get the message that ruins it all – “send nudes?” Unmatch. In a survey I conducted based around online dating experiences, when asked, “What were your reasons in signing

up?” one respondent answered, “I wanted to get balls deep in some vag.” Stay classy. Fifty percent of people signed up out of boredom, whilst 37% did it because their friends encouraged them, with an additional 37% admitting to using it to find a boyfriend/ girlfriend.

There might be an occasion when the conversation goes so well that you get a date that does not take place in his bedroom. In comes the Catfish fear. What if he looks nothing like his pictures? What if its awkward or we having nothing to talk about?

Your friends will inevitably force you to go; you meet up at a bar because who actually goes for romantic dinners anymore? The date goes surprisingly well, you exchange flirty banter (aka flanter) over a couple of glasses of wine and you might end the night with a drunken kiss. You go home, tell your friends, send him

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 36

a text saying you had a great time, he replies saying me too and that you should do it again soon. But he doesn’t text again. You can’t text him because you texted him first last time and you will just seem desperate. Then you log onto Tinder and see that he was last active 15 minutes ago. So it leaves you thinking, ‘What did I do wrong?’

We live in a generation where people are scared to talk about their feelings. We would rather be strung

along than tell him we like him or ask the dreaded question, ‘What are we?’

Maybe you have decided you’re, ‘seeing each other.’ But let me tell you something, that isn’t a real thing! It’s an excuse. It’s a fear of commitment. If both of you are exclusive then just cut the BS and admit you’re in a relationship. It’s a relationship, not a marriage. What even is ‘seeing each other’ anyway?

I have been single for 20 of my 22 years on this planet and so it is safe to say, I have the modern dating thing down to a tee. It’s hard. It’s hard trying to find someone who is committed to you in a world of people just wanting a night with you.

Maybe it’s just me? Maybe it’s because I’m a traditionalist and a hopeless romantic that dreams of the fairytale ending. It just so happens that I got my happy ending on Tinder. Three failed years and I became an official Tinderella. But I have most definitely had my fair share of terrible Tinder experiences and dates

– from somebody spiking my drink, to someone not getting the hint I don’t like them and enough unwanted d**k pics to last two life times.

I am not saying The Modern Dating Game is an entirely bad thing, in fact 30% of the people surveyed were in a relationship with somebody they met through online dating. It’s just sad that we only seem meet people when we’re either drunk, on a dating app or sometimes both at the same time. Where is the human connection?

People are too scared of intimacy and commitment because they would rather go on a night out and hook up with a bunch of people than tell somebody how they feel.

We need to change, we need to stop being scared to text first, we need to stop letting people string us along, we need to tell each other how we feel. But most importantly, we need to stop Netflix and Chilling.

restaurant was surprisingly busy for a Monday with 30-40 diners in total… always the sign of a good restaurant! We choose to sit in the light, airy conservatory area after being offered a table in the Secret Garden (another huge plus for Ditto – as you can see from our photographer’s pictures).

The service was exemplary. Our brilliant waitress gave us just the right time to order and even gave us recommendations from our given dietary requirements.

Next up was ordering – with such a wide and varied menu we were spoilt for choice. To start, I went for the King Prawn with Garlic and White Wine Sauce served on toasted sourdough with a mixed leaf salad. The prawns were huge, fresh and perfectly cooked with just the right amount of garlic, not too overpowering. The salad was drizzled in balsamic and the toasted home-baked sourdough slices were the perfect compliment to this delicious dish.

RESTAURANT REVIEW SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 67

RESTAURANT REVIEW

My guest ordered the Salt and Pepper Squid; deep-fried calamari with chilli, lime and basil alioli. Cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crispy batter (no signs of any grease). The chilli, lime and basil accompaniments set this dish off perfectly.

For the main course, I opted for a Ditto favourite, Moules Mariniere; a generous helping of tasty mussels (caught fresh that day) in a sumptuous cream and French white wine sauce with shallots, onions and flat leaf parsley, served with home-baked sourdough bread. If you are feeling particularly hungry, the larger portion Ditto offer of this classic dish comes with French Fries, perfect for dunking if there is any leftover sauce. Devine.

My guest ordered the Spinach and Ricotta Tortellini for main which was served in a sun-blushed tomato pesto sauce with fried courgettes, kale and parsley.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 68

The fresh, homemade pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the softness of the pasta filling was perfectly offset by the crunch of the crispy kale leaves. An amazing dish.

The pizzas, which our reviewers have had here on previous occasions, are also fantastic. There are 11 to choose from –seven with tomato bases and 4 without. All are made mini for kids too on their ‘Diddy Ditto’ kids’ menu.

There are also amazing meat dishes to try including 28 Day aged Surrey Farmed Sirloin with peppercorn, mushroom or blue cheese sauce or the Pan-Fried Breast of Duck with creamy mash, heritage carrots, wilted spinach and a wild berry jus.

If you have room, Ditto do brilliant dessert options too. Choose from delights such as Sicilian Lemon Pana Cotta, served with a mixed berry compote and lemon shortbread or Tiramisu Cheesecake with biscuit base, coffee and Tia Maria liqueur, topped off with fresh blueberries and mint. There is also Ditto’s Chocolate Pizza, a savoury pizza, Nutella spread and your choice of sorbet or ice-cream. Slightly sinful but equally delightful.

You can now enjoy a fantastic midweek offer of 2-4-1 on any pizza and pasta dish on Monday to Thursday lunchtimes at Ditto Thames Ditton. To make a booking:  020 8398 8662  bookings@dittothamesditton.com  www.dittothamesditton.com RESTAURANT REVIEW

As a brand, this is one of our favourite times of the year. There’s a fresh energy of excitement and anticipation for the season ahead. The fashion industry is finalising the schedules for Fashion Week and we’re busy preparing our kit for the shows we’ll be working on. We can’t reveal too much just yet, but, we can talk about the Barbie trend.

It’s transitioning well to become less extreme and more high-street. Barbie fashion influences have been all over the pages but the iconic blonde hair, less so. Now, we are beginning to see this filter through. A full head application is required for such a statement look

and will require a higher level of maintenance to keep it looking fresh but it’s iconic for a reason, and now would be the right time to start the process, ready for the film debuting in summer.

If you’re looking for something that requires a little less commitment then the bob is making some serious noise right now. Lily James and Jenna Ortega both showcased effortless styles at The Golden Globes, and at time of writing, one of our favourites, Hailey Bieber, had just cut her hair into a sharp shoulder-length bob. This style is iconic for a reason, it’s versatile, powerful and timeless - perfect for a new season change.

Q&A

1. I dry my hair every morning but by the end of the day, it’s flat. What can I do to keep volume in it?

It sounds like you might be using the wrong product in your hair. Heavy layers can pull hair downwards during the day but without seeing your hair, I’m guessing your stylist will have already addressed that. Using the wrong products, not washing them out or applying too much can be detrimental to your hair, weighing it down and leaving a coating on the hair. I would recommend that you begin by using a deep cleansing range to remove any product build up on the hair, this can also be offered as an in salon treatment. Then use a small amount of shampoo and add conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. When it comes to blowing, apply Oribe Volumista Mist for Volume all over towel-dried hair. New Age polymers enhance the diameter of each hair shaft for fullness, more hold and shine. Doing this should help keep volume locked in all day.

2. Any advice on how to deal with baby-hairs?

It is natural to lose hair once you have had your baby. It occurs around three or four months postpartum, and it is important to note that your hair will grow back. In the meantime, looking after baby hairs around the hairline takes patience and gentleness. These are new hairs that you need to treat gently. Avoid unnecessary heat around baby hair. Using products such as Mystify from Oribe will help to tame shorter hairs around the hairline and refresh for nextday styling, whilst adding conditioning benefits that help repair and nourish. We also recommend avoiding lightening baby hairs but do ask your stylist how a bespoke colour placement can help to still ensure your best.

Top notes of sweet elegant Damas and Hellebore rose buds with heart notes of jasmine and green stem accords combined with patchouli, vanilla and amber musk undertones…the molten gold dance floor, stunning centrepieces bursting with ivory roses and draped in crystal garlands, gilded tableware and tapering candles, people sitting, laughing, having fun in a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. Another scent which is really special to me is one I wore on my wedding day by Amouage. I have always been fascinated by middle eastern scents.

Amouage was founded by the Sultan of Oman in 1983 and described as ‘The Gift of Kings’. Only the finest and most special ingredients around the world are used. Amouage reflects the art of Arabian perfumery whilst bringing modernity to its unique, opulent scents. The scent I wear is named ‘Honour’ which is a combination of femininity with sensual floral notes and a beautiful undertone of leather and Vetiver accord.

Another similar combination which I have always loved is Oudh and Rose. Oudh has risen in popularity over the years due to more

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 77

people travelling to the Middle East as well as the longevity of the perfume itself. Ever since I first got a whaft of it in 2007 I thought it was totally unique. It’s not for the faint hearted and is certainly a more overpowering scent. I like to save this for when I am going out in the evenings. Armani Beauty Privé have nailed it with combining these two scents into ‘Rose D’arabie’. I tend to mix up my perfumes according to my mood but I don’t like to wear anything too overpowering during the day, especially as I usually have a 2 year old that likes to smother herself all over me! Don’t forget, scent is very personal, just like your home decor and fashion sense, but it is also more powerful than you think!

THE ACADEMY, WHICH OFFERS ON-DEMAND AND LIVE CLASSES, HAS TAUGHT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, RANGING FROM BEGINNERS TO PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING ACTORS LEARNING NEW SKILLS FOR ACTION ROLES.

BEFORE LAUNCHING HER BUSINESS, CHLOE WAS A STUNT DOUBLE FOR SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S LEADING ACTORS SUCH AS ZOE SALDANA IN GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY AND DAISY RIDLEY IN STAR WARS. HOWEVER, AFTER HAVING HAD HER FAIR SHARE OF BEING THROWN AROUND ON WIRES AND FIGHTING SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST BADDIES, SHE DECIDED TO TAKE ON A NEW TYPE OF CHALLENGE – LAUNCHING HER OWN BUSINESS. CHLOE SAID: “AS A MUM OF TWO JUGGLING WORK AND CHILDCARE, HAVING AN ONLINE BUSINESS HAS BEEN ESSENTIAL IN ENSURING I MAINTAIN A WORK-LIFE BALANCE. MY DREAM WAS ALWAYS TO LAUNCH A VIRTUAL PLATFORM, AND WHEN COVID-19 MEANT THAT PEOPLE WERE FORCED TO STAY AT HOME, IT FELT LIKE THE RIGHT TIME TO FORMALLY LAUNCH TO THE PUBLIC AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING.”

MARTIAL ARTS

Have you have ever thought about training within a style of martial arts, whether it be a Korean style, Japanese, Brazilian or one of the other popular styles? Tang Soo Do expert Chloe Bruce shares her thoughts on why you should definitely give martial arts a try, and/or start your children within martial arts today. I started a Korean style of martial arts called Tang Soo Do, at the age of 7. I was painfully shy, and such an introvert. I found it hard to socialising and hanging out with friends was something that I tried avoiding at all costs. Martial arts for me was so much more than just a hobby or a sport, it shaped me as a person, gave me the self-belief and confidence I needed to succeed in life and the motivation and perseverance to become World, European and British Champion! Today I am a world-renowned martial arts instructor coaching some of the top martial artists in the world.

FITNESS

ARTS

A lot of people associate martial arts to fighting and that just isn’t the case. Although sparring (fighting) is a huge element of martial arts, you are actually only taught to fight if there is no other way of controlling a situation. Beyond the sparring element, martial arts builds physical and mental health, teaches students the importance of respect and how to excel not just in martial arts, but in life. As you can imagine, learning these life skills from a young age is very important. Martial arts is great for shaping values and behaviours such as focus,

FITNESS

discipline, self-confidence, humbleness and stepping up when there’s an injustice.

A major benefit of following a martial arts program is the fitness that you develop along the way. Every session is a full body workout and great for losing weight, gaining muscular strength, improving your balance and coordination, gaining flexibility and an improved sense of mobility within your joints.

Martial arts will take you out of your comfort zone, but it will help equip you with the self-confidence and belief to be able to assess and overcome anything that life challenges you with.

The way I teach martial arts is that it is for everyone, from 5 years to elderly adults. You will sweat, you will learn new skills and techniques, you will have fun and you will build new friendships that will last a lifetime.

If anyone wants advice on what style to try, or where to start, you can always get in touch with myself via my website www.chloebruce.com.

I teach private lessons, group sessions and confidence building workshops in the Surrey area. I also have my online academy that has over 200 on-demand programs and is an online digital learning platform.

The Chloe Bruce Academy provides students with the highest quality martial arts, yoga and flexibility instruction available. I am here to encourage students to achieve excellence through elite coaching and positive influences.

Beyond the physical aspect of the students journey, the Chloe Bruce Academy also reinforces the complete personal development of each student. Striving for an empowered mindset through focusing on the below concepts:

1. High goal setting

2. Self confidence

3. Perseverance

4. Inspiration

5. Humility

Through enrolling into the interactive platform, students will have access to all of the tutorial videos, workouts and flexibility and yoga flows. Enabling students to study, or workout on any computer or mobile device 24 hours a day. I also have in depth learning programs for flexibility, Foundations of martial arts, and Bo staff (weapon we use in martial arts.)

So take on board what I have said, and I look forward to seeing you on the mats in the near future!

Your JANUARY Astrology Forecast from Pia Louisa February 2023

Hot Stars!

Aries

21 MAR – 20 APR

February shows your anxiety about the future increasing and negative thoughts entering your brain, Aries. You have been feeling down lately and aren’t quite doing the right thing to cheer yourself up. However, all this anxiety which has led to bad moods is just an illusion. It is important you remember that there is a whole world beyond what you can see. You are your own worst enemy, therefore, the only person who can help you, is you. Don’t let your mind control your whole life. Fight through the negative thoughts swirling around your brain and search for the happiness in your life. Take a day this month to forget about everything and everyone around you. Let it be your time to do something fun.

Taurus

21 APR – 20 MAY

This month is going to be all about progress for you, Taurus. You are likely to be more productive than usual, getting practical tasks done and out of the way. Creatively, you may find yourself feeling a bit blocked, which is going to lead you to access parts of yourself you didn’t know you had. Try to inspire yourself by doing something brand new and exciting. By the end of the month, you will go through a personal transformation. February will be a surprising month for you, and you will notice a significant difference in your daily habits and personality. You may not be where you want to be right at this moment, but trust that you are making progress, even if it takes longer than you originally thought.

Gemini

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

February is going to be a new beginning for you, Gemini. A phase of your life is coming to an end, and you are about to start a brand new journey. Think of this month as your New Year’s celebration! As a Gemini, you are easily addicted to certain things, and toxic people make that list. If you have found yourself seeing someone you know is bad for you, cut them off as soon as possible. Remember that you are worthy of having special people in your life who love you for you. Make sure to set clear boundaries with everyone. No matter who they are (parents, friends, colleagues), you must have boundaries with them. Define the relationship and remember to have fun.

Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

Have you actually forgiven yourself Cancerian? We all make mistakes, and you can’t beat yourself up about it for too long. It can be incredibly frustrating when you know you’re to blame for something not working out the way you hoped, but all you can do now is shake it off and try again. As a Cancerian, you are known for your amazing generosity. Helping others is a form of self-care for you and allows you to be your nurturing self. Give back to your friends and family, but make sure they don’t take too much from you. A homecoming is going to take place in February, with family members meeting up after time apart. Enjoy the time you have with everyone you love.

Leo

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Do you see what’s going on Leo? You have finally made a breakthrough in an area of your life you have felt stuck in for a long time now. Whatever you have done has worked, and you are now free to reap the benefits. On the other hand, by focusing so much on this new breakthrough, there may have been some lost opportunities that could have taken you in a different direction. Trust that if they were meant for you, they would have happened. You did what felt right in the moment, so how could that be wrong? Towards the end of February, an abundance of happiness is set to enter your life. It will be one of those moments that makes you feel lucky to be alive. Enjoy everything coming to you this month.

Virgo

24 AUG – SEPT 3

Virgos love to socialise, and hate feeling as if their friends have abandoned them to do something fun. Throughout February, creating your work life balance is going to be an important theme, as you may be worried about becoming a workaholic. Remember to take time off and spend time with friends if you need emotional support. You have a deep knowledge inside of you Virgo, and a very old soul. Use your wisdom for the highest good, and let the world know what you’re about. You’re more than what people see on the outside. Averting disasters is one of your greatest skills. You have the ability to lead others in the right direction and create a harmonious environment. Be there for others the way they’re there for you.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 94

Libra

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

February is all about letting go, Libra. You have held on to so many grudges for a long time now, but you must let them go. Buddha says, ‘Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die’, keep this quote in mind over the month. Harmony is extremely important to you. Having balance and peace in your life will get you far, as you thrive in harmonious situations. Make sure to keep the peace and not let anyone disrupt your calm atmosphere. Finally, collaborating is the best solution to any problems you are facing right now. There’s no point doing something alone that can be solved quicker in a team. It’s actually a good thing to ask for help.

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

Have you been checking in on your emotions enough lately Scorpio? Inner turmoil is causing you to feel worried and doubtful about the future. Trust that you’re doing the best you can right now and know that everything will work out. Scorpios are known to resist change, but in this instance, change is necessary. Your life is going through a drastic transition, and all you can do is go with the flow and see what happens next. Let life do its thing. Childhood memories may be resurfacing for you at the moment. Reflect on them, but don’t let them ruin your present. Your past does not define you. Remember to enjoy where you are right now and be in the moment.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

Intuitive messages are guiding you on the right path Sagittarius. February is going to be all about letting life take you in the direction you were always meant to go in. Listen to your heart and do what feels right in the moment. As Valentine’s Day is approaching, this month is all about unified love for you. Someone special in your life is making this day much more fun and meaningful. Together with this person, you feel at one. Finally, inspiration is going to hit you at an unexpected time! Whether it be creatively, emotionally, or academically, you will be inspired to start a new project. Feel free to do what your intuition is pushing you to do. There are no right or wrong answers to your questions.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

Emotional pain feels even stronger to you than most people, Capricorn. Even though times can be tough, don’t let this sorrow stop you from achieving your goals. February is all about overcoming obstacles that may be in your way. You have a fabulous imagination and will use this to your advantage. Life can sometimes be difficult to process, and it’s good you have ways to take yourself away from it all. Don’t feel ashamed of this skill. Finally, as a Capricorn, you are a natural entrepreneur! This month, focus on reaching each of your goals one step at a time. It won’t be long till you have everything you want. Block out any outside noise that is bringing you down. Live life your own way.

Aquarius

21

JAN – 19 FEB

Information overload, Aquarius! It seems you have been filling up your diary with too much too soon. It can all be very overwhelming to have so much to do in such a short space of time. You are an extremely determined person, so take a breather, and work out a way to organise your life so that you have time for yourself as well. Switching your brain off for a while and feeling relaxed is important to your overall wellbeing. There’s no shame in focusing on yourself. Even though there may be disagreements in your household, it doesn’t mean it’s an unpleasant place to be. This month, concentrate on finding your happy place within your home. You will find some sort of common ground with certain people in your life.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20 MAR

February is all about creating your own traditions, Pisces! This feels like a fresh start for you, and you now have a chance to live your life the way you want without any restrictions. Honour your past while still paving the way for your future. The word to describe your month is ‘rebirth’. It feels like you are becoming a new person and entering a brand-new phase of your life. You have let go of what no longer serves you and now have the capabilities to create your dream life. This is the time to focus on your own personal goals. Don’t fret about what anyone else may want. You do not need to feel guilty about putting yourself first.

TELL US ABOUT THE EXTREME EDITION?

To celebrate 16 years since the first Footsoldier, the UK distributor is rereleasing the first film in cinemas. The extended edition is not only longer with previously unseen footage from the 2007 film but they have upgraded the picture, done a Dolby mix on the sound basically bringing the film into 2023. A lot of people have not seen this particular version of the film.

AND WHAT’S IN STORE FOR US WITH THE NEW COMPUTER GAME?

The new Rise of the Footsoldier video game allows fans, old and new, to pick and choose which character to play in this arcade style brawler. The game is downloadable on ios and Android on smartphones and ipads. It’s a retro game – so feels real to the times the original film was shot in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH RISE OF THE FOOTSOLDIER?

I developed the first ‘Rise of the Footsoldier’ film way back in 2005 and spent 12 months raising the money and trying to get the film made. I met with Carnaby Films, and they bought the rights off me and funded the whole film, which was a great result for me as a producer and as an actor as I had the second lead

role in the movie and I’ve appeared in all five films.

WHAT OTHER PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?

Well proud to say the ‘25 Years of UK Garage’ I was recently involved in has topped the list of downloaded documentaries on Amazon and ‘The Last Heist’ released in December was also number one in the crime film section of Amazon. This makes them the only independent British made films to be in the top 100 bestsellers on Amazon too – a little bit of a feat to achieve this! Plus ‘Tate: 2 Days of Blood’ - the 6th installment of the franchise, was shot in November and

will be coming out later this year.

WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE?

We are working on a number of projects at the moment. One is a film on Chelsea headhunters and the other is a gritty, urban rap story called ‘Tales from the Trap’ – I’m describing it as ‘Top Boy’ meets ‘Blue Stories’.

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW BUT YOU ALSO CREATED DRUM & BASS BRAND ONE NATION. WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF RUNNING A CLUBBING EMPIRE?

The best thing for me would have been selling out a large scale venue and being able to sit back and see thousands of people having the time of their life and thinking wow I created this, how did that happen?

WHAT WAS THE WORST?

The aggravation, as whenever you attract large crowds in a big city, mix in some dance music, money, drugs and you can’t not attract trouble.

YOU HAVE GOT YOURSELF IN

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 18 102

‘The Rise of the Footsoldiers’ original film is being re-released in cinemas this month with extended scenes for die hard fans of the franchise. The Extreme Edition is backed up by a Leicester Square premiere, Battersea after party with Alex P and Brandon Block and the release of the ‘Rise Of The Footsoldier’ computer game.

‘Rise of the Footsoldier’ is Britain’s first and only true crime franchise, based on real life drug dealers; Pat Tate (Craig Fairbrass), Tony Tucker (Terry Stone) and Craig Rolfe (Roland Manookian) who were brutally murdered in their Range Rover in 1995. There have been five movies to date which span across their decades. The first follows the rise of Carlton Leach from a football hooligan to becoming a member of the notorious gang of criminals who rampaged their way through London and Essex. The Extreme Edition will have lots of the deleted scenes and even more gritty violent portrayals of this real life criminal gang. Surrey Rocks caught up with the film’s enigmatic lead character Terry Stone who plays Tony Tucker to find out more about the film, computer game and life on the club scene.

A FEW ‘STICKY’ SITUATIONS OVER THE YEARS, WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST OR WORST IN YOUR OPINION?

I think the funniest times were always when you went out just for one drink or a quiet one and you ended up being kidnapped by your mates and ended up coming home 4 days later. The worst times for me was having guns pulled on me outside clubs. At the back end of the 90’s the gun crime escalated in London (it was never widely reported as it is today as there was no social media back then - so it could easily be brushed under the carpet by the authorities.) This was when I started thinking I may have a change of career!

WHAT IS YOUR BEST CHARACTER TRAIT?

My best character trait is being tenacious.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

Winners never quit and quitters never win! It’s been my mantra since I was 13.

WORST HABIT?

My worst habit is rushing into things when I get excited.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

A boxing manager.

WHAT ACTOR WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE?

Jack O’Connell would be a great shout.

MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE?

I’d say a gold shirt, I know I know!
