'It's the best time of the year!' Put simply, the pump is on! Up and down the west coasts of Europe, surfers have been revelling in a really promising start to the swell season. As we've all seen already, the World Tour events in both France and Portugal saw pumping waves but what we haven't seen yet is the hoards of upcoming surfers making the most of the awesome waves at their homebreaks before the contest circus flew in. ProShowUno Jordan Lawler is a serious upcoming talent already with an impressive array of results on the QS – numerous quarter final finishes and a runner up just over a year ago at the Outer Banks event in North Carolina. Plagued by injury though, Jordy has had to ride the rough with the smooth and just as he was once again gaining momentum this year, another fall on his ankle saw his campaign at the Lacanau event cut short. However, not one to give up easily, Jordy's back at it again with a recent quarter place finish at the Port Stephens event and so his journey is only really just beginning and certainly there's much more to come from this one!

surphalosophy What first got you into surfing? My dad started pushing me in when I was young and all I wanted to do was go back. Who in surfing inspires you most? Watching Mason Ho before I go surf gets me excited to surf.
When and how did you get sponsored by Quiksilver? I've been surfing for Quiksilver since I was 9. Chas Wells called my dad and talked to him about sponsoring me. What do you prefer then, free surfing or competitions and why? I have always been really into competitions. They really get me excited to go out and surf.

The past few years have seen you upping your performance on the competitive circuit with another win at the National Finals of the RipCurl Gromsearch being your latest victory. So talk us through the highs and lows of one of those contests that lead to you earning one of your many titles? For me, the International Gromsearch Final in Brazil was a really cool experience because I got to go to a new place with the best kids in the world and compete. I think just adapting to the conditions was a tough thing to do there but in the end I figured out my boards and was feeling really good. So with an impressive competitive career already, which of them goes down as your best victory to date? I think my best victory has been the International Gromsearch final, just because I got to go against the best kids in the world and to come out on top was unbelievable.

surphalosophy Most recently, you've been competing in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Japan where of course Team America took Gold. So how did it feel taking part in such a high-profile competition and being the overall winners? Yeah Japan was another really cool experience. I didn't do as well as I would have liked to in the contest but it was still really cool to be able to get gold with my team. Especially cause everyone on that team was my really good friend so it was cool to share it with them.
You had to overcome some solid surfing from your contenders. So how did you find the level of surfing from so many top young surfers from all around the world? All of the guys around the world are so talented. Even countries that you didn't even know would have surfers would have really good surfers. Of all of them, which did you least want to be drawn up against in a heat and why? There were a few Japanese competitors that were surfing sooo good in those conditions, such as Yuji Nishi and Joh Azuchi. They were definitely two people I did not want to be in my heat!

You're from California, meaning you get to surf top quality waves like Trestles on a regular basis but you also spend plenty of time travelling each year! So how would you rate your local spots compared to others you've surfed? I think no matter where I go I always can't wait to come home to surf Lowers. It's such a world class wave that I think it's just as good as some places I have travelled.

surphalosophy And where else around the world have you been lucky enough to travel to and surf? I have had a few trips to Indo that have been insane especially to Sumatra for the Young Guns Surf competition. We got such good waves that event all by ourselves. Out of them all, when and where has your best surf session been? I think during the final of the Young Guns Surf contest was my favourite session. It was only 4 of us out in bombing conditions at a perfect left point. Can't imagine it getting any better than that.
So what about future plans for travelling? Where do you want to head to and surf? I have really wanted to be able to go on a boat trip to the Mentawaiis. The waves are so perfect there. I've seen so many video clips from there that get me really stoked.

surphalosophy Now having surfed in the Worlds, what's next? What are your goals for the next few years? My goals for the next few years are to focus on the Pro Juniors and QS events and build my seed for the coming years ahead. Finally, where do you see yourself in five to ten years time? My hope for then is to be on the CT. I think it's every surfer's goal and if I can achieve that, it will be my lifelong goal for sure.

ION launched themselves into the surf scene, a couple of years ago now, having been a key watersports giant before that. Since then they have become known as a quality product brand, almost the Audi equivalent of the water-based world, with a range of different wetsuits available to meet every different watersports enthusiast's needs. ION's Onyx series of wetsuits are produced in a range of versions so this time around we're focusing on two of the top end suits, the Select and Amp both in an appropriately autumnal 4/3mm thickness offering the 'Best of Both' in wetsuit technology. With this in mind, we asked our own team riders, Luke Prokopiou and Stan Flynn, who spend all day, every day in the water as lifeguards and former French Junior Champion, Andy Criere, to take on the challenge of testing out the front-zip suits in a range of conditions from average autumnal surf to pumping reef breaks and before we knew it, they were all suited up and ready to sample the best of both!

STYLE The range of Onyx suits each have a different style to suit various tastes the Onyx Select takes on a split personality all of its own with its half black and half red look that belongs well and truly among the 50/50 trend of the moment. Certainly there's enough choice in colour and style there to meet every surfer's needs with nothing overly in your face!

Best of Both The main purpose of the Onyx Select wetsuits is warmth! ION have perfectly accomplished this with upper body windchill protection for the torso and warm, quick drying Plasma_Plush lining. They sacrificed the Ninja_Knee and Ninja_Spine features for more heat retention. The red coloured legs combined with the red Power_Seam make this suit very unique, but not overdone. Riders who push the boundaries rely on ultimate freedom of movement and high-tech performance to support their ambitious style and the Onyx Select delivers this on all levels!

HotWots FUNCTIONALITY The Onyx Select suit is loaded with a whole host of innovative features. As well as the obvious drain holes which work well, the suit has fully taped and liquid seamed seals making it super toasty. It's slightly disconcerting having the zip entry open from the right but overall it does what it needs to and keeps you warm!
DRAIN HOLES Whenever two flaps overlap there is a chance that water can accumulate. In order to combat this, the design ensures that quick water release is provided when needed, so Drain_Holes are secured in place from the inside and won't expand. SEAM PROTECTION All stress points that come under a lot of force are reinforced with either Melco Tape on the inside seams, or rubber logo patches on the outside of the suit to prevent ripping. SEAL TITE A rubber like stripe print is provided around the inside of the wrists and ankles. This results in a tighter sealed fit which stops water from rushing into your suit and loosening of material around these areas. CONTOUR CUT To improve flexibility and comfort, all ION wetsuits come with the ION Contour Cut. It greatly enhances flex in the collar, wrists, elbows, insteps and the back of the knees.

COMFORT The Onyx Select suit immediately felt both warm and comfortable. The only drawback was during the paddle outs, when the back of my neck felt like it was being pushed down by the suit and did cause a slight time of discomfort. Apart from that though, the suit was particularly warm right through the surf and did feel comfortable for most of the time.

STRETCHABILITY It is clear that ION have pioritised warmth over stretch with the Onyx Select, as the mesh on the torso made it feel initially quite restrictive. However, it did stretch more as it was used and this certainly meant that it did fit like a glove. At first, I struggled with how tight it was but it did grow on me. That said, I found myself in no struggle getting the suit on and off so in that sense, by the end of the session, I was actually pleasantly surprised by the amount of stretch in the neoprene of this suit.

USABILITY Out surfing, you do start to notice how flexible the Onyx Select actually can be. It's very easy to surf in and when you're popping up and on a wave, you don't feel like you're wearing a wetsuit at all. There were times though, especially when paddling, that it didn't feel so flexible. However, it still kept me warm the whole time I was out in the surf so overall it did the job.

STYLE The style of the Onyx Amp has a far more classic dark wetsuit look to it than the rest of the Onyx series. It's not actually a classic black, but the dark navy gives it the same sophisticated appearance and with the subtle ION logos and decals, it really gives a classy overall feel to the suit. All in all, I thought the Amp looked really cool and really liked its lack of colour which helped it gain in style.

Best of Both ION's Onyx Amp represents an exceptional performance level especially in terms of stretch. The Ninja_Knee construction is primarily supported by the famous Maki_Tape. ION have enlarged the back panel which saves some weight and increases the area of plushy lining. For those striving hot shots who demand stretch and warmth, the chest zip option features the right amount of stretch material and with additional tape sealing on the inside, this is a suit with so much swagger, it's up to the surfer to do the performing.
MAKI TAPE Maki_Tape is made out of Cyber_Stretch 130% Neoprene and thus not limiting at all. At Amp Level suits, it seals every inch of each seam for incredible sealing against water without limiting the stretch. SINGLE PANEL BACK Reduced seam panel layout at the back to save weight and enhance stretch. NINJA KNEES When buying a wetsuit, the first thing a surfer will do is pull the arms to see how stretchy they are. Well ION believes the legs deserve the same attention, so the new Ninja_Knees feature uses the same highly elastic materials as used in the arm panels. The result is astonishing with awesome freedom of movement, especially when bending the knees.

COMFORT The Onyx Amp was comfortable enough though at first it felt quite tight around the chest. This did ease the more you used it and overall the suit's level of comfort was adequately sufficient for it not to restrict my surfing.

STRETCHABILITY The Onyx Amp is a surprisingly stretchy suit and really does fit very well on the whole. Getting in and out of the suit was very easy and I found myself in no struggle getting the suit on and off so in that sense, I was pleasantly surprised by the stretch of the neoprene.

USABILITY Out in the surf, the Onyx Amp really came into its own! It was very easy to paddle in and when you're popping up, riding a wave and busting all your moves, you don't feel like you were wearing a wetsuit at all. In fact the Onyx Amp was made of such thin neoprene, it felt more like a 3/2 summer suit even though it was a 4/3. So it still kept me warm the whole time I was out surfing and overall performed well.

THE VERDICT The Onyx Select has a really distinct and stylish look with its 50/50 black and red decor, really making it stand out from the rest. Despite a few issues that would need getting used to (the reversed zip entry to most other suits and the initially tight feeling torso to the suit), on the whole it performed well and I was pleased with it.

THE VERDICT I found this suit really pleasing on the whole – the style was really cool with its almost classic dark look and just a few subtle details to add some interest. Although it was strange having the zip the other way around to what I'm used to and that it felt a bit tight at first, it was really flexible when out surfing so overall did well enough for a good surf.
