MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER
Mother’s Day is a special occasion to honor and appreciate the amazing women who have raised us and made us who we are today. It is a time to express our gratitude and love towards our mothers, grandmothers, and all the mother figures in our lives. Let us take this opportunity to show them how much they mean to us and make their day (AND MONTH) extra special! Additionally, the month of May is Bicycle and Scooter Safety month. When riding a scooter or bicycle, it’s important to prioritize safety and follow the rules of the road. Wearing a helmet, using hand signals, and obeying traffic laws can help prevent accidents and keep both riders and drivers safe. By practicing safe riding habits, we can all work together to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for everyone on the road.

MAYOR DANZINGER TRAVELS TO TALLAHASSEE, SPEAKS TO OPPOSE SENATE AND HOUSE BILLS
This March, Mayor Danzinger traveled to Tallahassee to speak in opposition of House Bill 627 and Senate Bill 102. Both bills look to tackle Florida’s growing affordable housing challenge. However, these bills would also allow the State to supersede municipal zoning restrictions on height and density which could negatively impact small communities like Surfside.
ABBOTT LOT RESIDENT-ONLY PARKING SIGNS INSTALLED
Parking in Surfside’s commercial district can often be challenging, particularly at 95th Street during peak business hours and holidays. To alleviate the issue, the Town Commission has added new, 15-minute max resident-only parking signs in the Abbott parking lot. Look for the designated coral signage. Parking is intended for short errands in the business district only, please do not exceed 15 minutes.

What do you want residents to know about you?
My name is Hector Gomez and I joined the Surfside family seven years ago. The goal was always to stay here for as long as I could serve this community. With Surfside being a small Town, one has to wear many hats which fits well with my personality and fast paced character. I am privileged and delighted to continue serving this community in my new role and I’m here for you if I can be of service.
What do you think makes Surfside special?
Surfside has changed a lot in the time I have been here. One continuity that has always existed is the presence of family life and family values. Surfside is special because our goal here is to improve the quality of life of all resident families and provide them with spaces and amenities that will enable them to thrive. By the same token, we have a different type of skyline; one that is felt the moment you drive into and out of Surfside. That unique feeling is only felt here, at our coastal gem within Miami-Dade County.
What is your vision for Surfside?
A small Town with responsible growth that cares about promoting resiliency and is focused on improving the pedestrian experience. I want families to enjoy being outdoors safely and creating the infrastructure to nourish that.

TREE CITY USA SPOTLIGHT 89TH STREET BEAUTIFICATION
GET READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON
From Public Works & Code Compliance — Hurricane Season is quickly approaching and now is the time to prepare. For starters, make sure to assess all the trees and vegetation within your property. Beginning May 1st , Pubic Works will be placing a special emphasis on vegetation bulk collection as part of a the storm hazard mitigation plan. If needed, hire a licensed arborist to assess your trees and do all the necessary pruning. All trees must be trimmed to be “structurally sound” to withstand intense storms. You should also ensure that all power lines are free from vegetation, such as tree branches. The Town Code states that “Each property owner is responsible for hiring a qualified, licensed and insured contractor as necessary to maintain all trees on their property or within the right-of-way adjacent to their property, free and clear of power lines to prevent or alleviate the danger of the tree damaging power lines.”
Also, try to keep any outdoor items to a minimum so it is easier to bring them all inside should a storm approach. Solid Waste will be conducting additional bulk pickups for vegetation only. There will be no change to the established bulk collection program. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact Public Works. If a storm is imminent, all household and garden materials to be discarded must be placed on the curb for pick up otherwise the Town might not be able to remove it.
We hope for a safe hurricane season and ask that you do your part in keeping yourself and your neighbors safe!
For more information on hurricane season preparations, please visit the Town website.
NEW ADA BEACH ACCESS MATS INSTALLED
From Public Works — The Public Works Maintenance Division led by Supervisor Josvani Iglesias have recently completed the installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant rollout beach access walkway mats. The new ADA mats will improve access for wheelchairs, pedestrians, strollers, and wheeled carts for mobility challenged beach goers. Currently, the Town has installed ADA mats at 95th Street, 93rd Street and 89th Street beach access points. The Town remains committed to providing accessibility to our residents and looks forward to seeing everyone enjoying our beautiful beaches.

MOTORIZED SCOOTER EDUCATION: A SAFE RIDER IS AN ALERT RIDER
Attention Surfside community! Are you planning to ride a motorized scooter around Town? Before you hit the road, it’s important to know the rules and regulations to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
A motorized scooter, sometimes called electric kick scooter, micromobility device, or e-scooter, is powered by a small electric motor built into the front or rear wheel. A motorized scooter is a vehicle that:
• Has three or fewer wheels
• Cannot exceed 30 mph on level ground
• Does not have a seat or saddle.
If you are considering using a motorized scooter as your mode of transportation, there are some important things you need to know to stay safe and follow the law. The following information will help you understand the rules and regulations regarding the use of a motorized scooter.
Legal Use : In Florida, motorized scooters are considered vehicles and must follow the same rules as other motor vehicles on the road. You are not required to have a driver’s license to operate a motorized scooter. However, you must follow all Florida traffic laws just as you would if walking, bicycling, or driving a vehicle. The motorized scooter must be operated in the same direction as traffic, and you must come to a complete stop when required at all intersections.
A motorized scooter is not required to satisfy the State’s registration and insurance requirements. A person is not required to have a driver license to operate a motorized scooter. As a motorized scooter rider, you have the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists, including the opportunity to use bike lanes.
Safety Education : It’s important to know how to properly operate a motorized scooter to avoid accidents and injuries. Always wear a helmet and other protective gear, and make sure to follow all traffic laws and signals. Keep both hands on the handlebars and avoid carrying any bulky items that could interfere with your balance. Additionally, it’s important to never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
It’s also important to keep in mind that you must yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and in crosswalks, and always signal your intentions when turning or changing lanes. Be mindful of your surroundings and always exercise caution when riding your motorized scooter.
Tip: To ensure visibility, it’s best to make eye contact with other motorists instead of making sudden stops or turns.
Additionally, you should always wear protective safety gear, including a good-fitting helmet, closed-toe shoes, and long pants. If under age 16, you are required by Florida Law to wear a helmet. Always wear a properly fitted helmet and securely fasten the strap. Did you know that by wearing a Helmet riders cut down the risk of fatal head injuries by over 60 percent? Motorized scooters are not designed for children, and you must be over the age of eighteen to rent one in Florida. All safety recommendations and guidelines should always be followed when operating any kind of motorized vehicle on the roadways and through traffic.
Where to Operate :To minimize the risk of injury or running into people, it’s important to know where you can and cannot operate your motorized scooter. You are allowed to ride on roads with a speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less, in bike lanes, and on sidewalks if you are traveling at a walking pace. However, it is illegal to ride on highways, bridges, or any roads with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the convenience and fun of riding a motorized scooter while also keeping yourself and others safe. Remember, safety always comes first!

MARCH CIVILIAN OF THE MONTH
Once a year, the MDCACP Dinner hosted by Chiefs from the Island communities is held at the exclusive Indian Creek Country Club and it would not happen without Surfside’s own Dina Goldstein. Planning for this special dinner requires a lot of time and preparation. Each year, Dina volunteers to be the lead contact person for all the agencies that are sponsoring and attending the event and enthusiastically organizes the event on behalf of the Island Chiefs. This requires pre-meetings with the Indian Creek Police Chief and the Country Club event planner.
Dina’s dedication to serving the community, along with the numerous police agencies in Miami Dade County, is a testament to her dedication and professionalism. She is a shining example of the Police Department’s dependability and devotion to the Town she proudly serves. Congratulations to Executive Assistant to the Chief Dina Goldstein as the recipient of the March Civilian of the Month award…well deserved!

NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATIONS WEEK
Do you ever wonder who’s the person behind our emergency calls to 911? All we know about them is their voice, which is why National Public Safety Telecommunications Week recognizes and thanks those invisible telecommunicators who have continued to serve in this demanding profession. Citizens in the past who may not have been aware, have come to realize that telecommunicators are in fact “The First, First Responders!” National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is April 9-15 , 2023. This week is celebrated annually and honors the thousands of men and women who answer emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to citizens and first responders. Communications Supervisor Susie Sperbeck is praised by the Command Staff and her colleagues for her 26 years of exceptional service to the law enforcement profession as a communications operator and supervisor for the Town of Surfside. In times of crisis, her essential service is clearly demonstrated and greatly appreciated by all she serves. A special thank you to this dedicated professional for all she does each and every day.

MARCH OFFICER OF THE MONTH
Officer Dianna Hernandez has demonstrated in her exceptional 12 years of service with the Surfside Police Department compassion, dedication, and kindheartedness to everyone she encounters. Whether it is a call for service or routine patrol, the highest level of professionalism is exhibited by Officer Hernandez. The following are two examples of her remarkable service to the community.
On Oct. 3, 2022, Officer Hernandez came across a homeless elderly female who was sleeping on a bench at the Publix located in Surfside. Officer Hernandez engaged the woman and listened to her story of how she felt the system had failed her. The woman expressed her frustration and feelings of hopelessness to Officer Hernandez, who listened with empathy and compassion. Despite the challenges of long waiting lists for affordable and government housing, Officer Hernandez did not allow these obstacles to prevent her from aiding. She asked the woman to give her a chance to help, and with tears in her eyes she graciously accepted Officer Hernandez’s offer of support. Officer Hernandez immediately contacted homeless organizations she has worked with in the past and sent an email requesting assistance for the elderly female. Thanks to her unrelenting efforts, the female was eventually placed in a shelter where she could get the help and support she desperately needed.
On Feb. 2, 2023, Officer Hernandez noticed an elderly homeless male sleeping on the bench outside Publix. She was aware the male used to be a resident in the Town however he lost his home after becoming ill. The male had no family and ended up homeless. Officer Hernandez went above and beyond her duty as a police officer to get the man the help he needed. She contacted homeless organizations she has worked with in the past to get him assistance. The homeless organization eventually contacted the homeless male, nonetheless he did not accept the services. Despite this setback, Officer Hernandez spoke to the homeless male again to convince him to get aid, regrettably she was unsuccessful. Officer Hernandez’s determination and benevolence in attempting to help this individual are praiseworthy. Officer Hernandez’s commitment to serving the community, particularly its most vulnerable members, is a testament to her perseverance and integrity. Her determination in making a positive difference in the lives of those in need is unwavering and truly admirable. Officer Hernandez embodies the Police Department’s core values each day and performs her altruistic actions in an exemplary manner. Congratulations to Officer Dianna Hernandez as the recipient of the March Officer of the Month award…well deserved!
