Resort grants pump up community groups
GROUP BENEFIT BY JAMES TAYLOR
THREE community groups close to the new RACV Torquay Resort will share in half a million dollars worth of grants given in the name of the Torquay Golf Club. An agreement to significantly fund local projects was struck when the RACV purchased the golf club for the development of the resort, and the successful recipients were announced at a
ceremony on Thursday. The Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee (GORCC) will receive $200,000 to build a lookout and walkway at Rocky Point, which separates the Torquay and Jan Juc beaches. GORCC chairman John Carlile said the coastal land that the committee managed had come under increasing pressure in recent times. “We have a lot of work to do to protect it.” The Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC)

received $150,000 towards a new training room as well as upgrades to its fire service, first aid and patrol rooms. Club president Ian Turner said he was thankful for both the funding and the construction of the resort at the course. “The building brings a lot of class to the area, it’s a welcome addition.” The Jan Juc SLSC also received $150,000 for redevelopment of club facilities, including public toilets, life saver patrol storage and recharging for electric mobility scooters. Peter Smith, the club sponsorship and fundraising manager, said the grant
would tie in with its ongoing refurbishment. “We’re 50 years old this year, so we need to redevelop for the growing population.” Torquay Golf Club president Greg Libbis said his club had been part of the community for 90 years, and had provided support to many groups through charity golf days and other fundraising activities. RACV Club and Resorts executive general manager Sue Blake said the RACV and the golf club received a range of suggestions when they went looking for projects to support. “All had merit, it’s been a very difficult decision.”
