Famous chef to run kitchen at Lorne Bowls Club
CHEF COUP BY JAMES TAYLOR
AWARD-winning Geelong chef Matt Dempsey has been announced as the new operator of the Lorne Bowls Club’s restaurant, which will open next Friday. Mr Dempsey, who is the owner/ operator of the Gladioli and Tulip restaurants, said the Seastar restaurant would feature affordable meals made on site with fresh ingredients.
The club had been seeking a new operator to take over from Banks Restaurant owner Ben Cameron, who closed his kitchen at the Mountjoy Parade venue on April 30. Mr Dempsey said his vision for Seastar would be true to its location within a bowls club, with main meals costing between $15 and $25. “I want it to be community-focused, I want people from the Lorne community
and elsewhere to be comfortable about coming along; it definitely won’t become a five-star restaurant. I’d like it to be the type of place I’d want to take my kids on holidays. We want somewhere people want to come back to year after year, and say ‘I can’t wait to go to the Lorne Bowls Club and have a meal’.” The restaurant will likely go to serving meals five nights a week within about a month.
“I’ll probably be there quite a lot for the first six months to get it up and going, and we’ll see where it ends up after that,” Mr Dempsey said. “I think it’s important to people that as an owner you spend a bit of time there and get to know the community.” Lorne Bowls Club president Tony Peddie said finding a permanent operator for the kitchen was the new board’s number one priority, and he was “totally
delighted” to have secured someone of Mr Dempsey’s calibre. “He was looking to expand onto the coast and we’ve ended up together. We think it will be a very happy marriage.” He said the appointment was one of a number of exciting initiatives at the club, including free wi-fi, a permit to build a deck at the front for al fresco dining, and a push to encourage more twilight and barefoot bowling.
