The power of local dialogues!

SRPR The Talk of Town With the election results out and the Government coming back in power, the air of uncertainty is relinquishing. The Government has brought a lot of reforms in the last five years, many of which overhauled the way businesses were run. Finally, in the next tenure it is expected to provide a stronger platform for businesses to take-off. Architects, Designers, Brands and the Real estate fraternity must gear up to make the best of it.

While with the much loved mega architecture event WADe Asia we are able to connect architects, designers and artists nationally and stir important conversations yet I always felt a vacuum. Thus, to churn ideas at the local level, we had initiated Surfaces Reporter’s The Talk of Town city events, of which we recently successfully completed 11 editions. Some of the cities covered recently are Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Delhi and Bangalore.

As the Mayor of Ahmedabad shared her vision for the city during Surfaces Reporter’s The Talk of Town, her dreams gained strength with the active participation of the audience, who provided some great suggestions for the improvement of the city. As a media we not

only initiated, conceptualised and organised the event, we are also compiling the points to be submitted to the Mayor for further action. Smt Bijal Patel shared that in the next meeting, architects will be invited for a discussion.

In a similar instance at Bangalore SRPR The Talk of Town event, we listened to Dr Shobha Reddy who shared about their citizen initiative of rejuvenating the lake Rachenahalli, how a small task force of 8 has transformed into a bandwagon of 200 people today, they motivated everyone to take actions rather than just talking about it.

Power is no more in the Big, the Great or the Mighty. Power is in ‘Action’ and the capability to bring about ‘Change.’

You all have a voice, an opinion that can make a difference, a thought that can bring a change. I, thereby, invite decision-makers, architects, designers, artists and enablers to come together on the engaging platform of WADe Asia and SRPR The Talk of Town city events and share ideas and experience, so that we all can learn and grow collaboratively.

May 4, 2019, Hotel Renaissance, Ahmedabad The essence of Surfaces Reporter’s and The Ply Reporter’s The Talk of Town city event lies in bringing core issues of architecture, urban planning, interior design and retailing to the surface and this happened in Ahmedabad as well. The 10th edition of The Talk of Town event took place on 4th May 2019 at Hotel Renaissance, where renowned Town Planners, Architects, Designers, Real Estate & Heritage experts became a part of this enriching event. Beginning with a motivating address by Smt Bijal Patel, Mayor of Ahmedabad, the event became an engaging platform for exchange of ideas with panel discussions focused on stimulating topics such as ‘The Heritage City – Ahmedabad – Way Forward’; Plagiarism in Design,’ ‘Key Design Skepticism’, ‘The Journey of Interior Retailing in Ahmedabad,’ and ‘Innovations in Wood and Panel products.’

At the outset, esteemed panelists – Jaxay Shah, Chairman, CREDAI, India, Pradyumna Vyas, Former Director, National Institute of Design Yatin Pandya, co-owner, FootPrints E.A.R.T.H and Utpal Sharma, Director, Nirma University discussed what’s the way forward for Ahmedabad in architecture and design. Plagiarism has been plaguing the architecture and design industry since long.

The 11th edition of SRPR The Talk of Town successfully completed in Bangalore on 18th May 2019. It was an informative event that witnessed the presence of the crème de la crème from the architecture and design fraternity of Bangalore.

The first speaker Dr Shobha Ananda Reddy is an Environmental Scientist with over 17 years of varied experience – teaching, research, community engagement.

She is the recipient of ‘Environmentalist of the Year’ award for the year 2013 from the National Environmental Science Academy. She formed the community group “Jalmitra” for protection and revival of Rachenhalli lake and has been instrumental in reviving the lake. The first panel discussion of the day centered around the subject- ‘The City – Bangalore – Can We Revive What We Lost’ in which panellists – Neelam Manjunath (Manasaram), Anil Bhaskaran (IDEA Centre Architects), Vijay Narnapatti (mayaPRAXIS & School of Architecture, CHRIST), Ravindra Kumar (Pragrup & Vagroup), Shobha Reddy (Jalmitra & TREND) and Anup Naik (Urban Frame - A Spacematrix Group company) shared their valuable insights. witnessed huge transformations in paint products in terms of functionality, materials and application methods. Toxic materials are out and 'natural' is in. What's more? From brushes and rollers, we are moving towards having robots painting our homes. Are you ready?

Cave dwellers grounded coloured rocks, earth and minerals into powders and mixed with a binding medium such as egg or animal fat to make paint. For thousands of years, paints were handmade from ground-up mineral-based pigments. In 1718, Marshall Smith invented a "Machine or Engine for the Grinding of Colours" in England. Soon, a company called Emerton and Manby developed low-priced paints.

By the proper onset of the Industrial Revolution, paint was being ground in steam-powered mills and an alternative to lead-based pigments was found in a white derivative of zinc oxide. In 1866, Sherwin-Williams in the United States opened as a large paintmaker and invented a paint that could be used from the tin without preparation. It was not until the World War II that artificial resins, or alkyds, were invented. Paints today, include acrylic emulsions, which are acrylic based paints and are ideal for application on interior and exterior walls, and enamel paints that are good for application on metal. The product type varies not just as per the substrate but also basis consumer choice.

Growth of the Paint Industry

The paint industry, two main components of which are Decorative Segment and Industrial Segment, has been steadily growing. Owing to the boom in the housing sector, increasing urbanisation, easy availability of loans, rise in per capita income, and shift from kuccha or semi permanent to permanent housing structure the demand for decorative paints segment is increasing which constitutes almost 70% of the Indian paint industry. The scenario with industrial paint is also promising.
