FOCUS ON: Bathroom Eleven An introduction to our brilliant sponsors Bathroom Eleven Director Ben Setterfield has been creating beautiful bathrooms across Surrey and South West London for the last two decades. Today he leads a trusted team, all driven by design and each committed to delivering extraordinary bathrooms for everyday living. Bathroom Eleven have fitted over 750 bathrooms (big and small) as well as wetrooms. With each project they undertake, they promise a professional service and pride themselves on careful craftsmanship and the highest attention to detail. Case Study: “Our client wanted a statement en-suite for their master bedroom in their Victorian house. The current layout worked extremely well, as the space was generous, but it was starting to look dated. The claw-foot bath taking centre stage of the room looked good, but wasn’t bold enough to really have a standing. The room had so much potential and our clients wanted something dramatic. Enter glamorous black and copper! We created a luxury feel using marble and wood effects, adding black brassware and copper to lift the room with a bright colour and a warm tone that carries from the bath, to the basin and even the WC. The marble feature wall in the

shower is mimicked in the mosaic run under the bath and the worktop and splashback for the basin. This brings in a harmonious balance, making a large area feel like a connected space that balances finishes, tones and colours across the room. Dark units contrast against the lighter tile palette, highlighting the sense of drama but allowing the bath, in all its black and copper glory, to be the centrepiece of a luxurious room. What our client said about the finished project:

“Changing our bathroom into a luxury wetroom was a great decision – it's been transformed into an elegant space and is much more enjoyable to shower in.” Ruth Clougherty – Founder, Gin & Yin Retreats, Surbiton If you are after a fully project managed service with bathrooms designed and installed with you in mind, contact us at www.bathroomeleven.co.uk. We source the best brands and with a 5-year warranty on all of our installations, you couldn’t be in better hands.

You can see the transformation from the before (top left) photos to the finished project (bottom left and right) after we had completed the installation. A generous space made amazing. This bathroom was also featured in the Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms magazine!

SPECIAL FEATURE: Club Umpiring

11

Meet some of the umpiring team who enable club games to take place every week...

With 23 adult sides and around 50 junior teams, we are indebted to an incredible number of people who volunteer their time to help officiate games every single weekend. In this feature, we acknowledge and celebrate the amazing work done by our umpiring team both on and off the pitch. It’s all too easy to take our umpires for granted – if you’re inspired to pick up a whistle by the umpiring stories of some of our players and parents (of all ages and abilities) we would love to hear from you. 'The Father - Daughter Team' Simon Aldous – Club Umpire We live in Surbiton and both of my girls joined the Colts aged seven, so I began to spend a lot of time at the club as a consequence of the regular weekly training sessions, mini matches and junior tournaments. The girls became hooked on hockey and so after a few years of spending many hours standing on the sidelines watching I thought I may as well get involved as I was there anyway. As a non hockey player (rugby was my sport) coaching was never an option and so I decided to qualify as an umpire. I found a Level 1 Beds & Bucks Umpire Course in St Albans, which I took and passed, and subsequently passed my SHUA assessment to qualify as a Surrey L1 Umpire. I was then very lucky as Ellie Vickery gave me the opportunity to umpire the Ladies 9s for a season and it was here that I got the experience, confidence and desire to umpire on a regular basis. The biggest challenge of umpiring is that you are continually worried that you will make a mistake, which you will! Once you accept this and understand that every umpire in every game, regardless of level, will either miss something or get something wrong then it becomes easier. The biggest reward is being actively involved in a competitive sporting occasion. I used to play rugby and really miss it but being involved in hockey and contributing to provide others being able to pitch up and play week in and week out is a pretty rewarding feeling. I always try to keep ‘the 3Cs’ in mind. An umpire needs to be Calm – don’t get caught up in the emotions of the players; Confident – always be confident in your decisions as your confidence will rub off onto the players and even if they disagree they will tend to accept what you blow; and Consistent – it is critical that you are consistent in the decisions you make. This helps players understand how you are umpiring and the key things you're looking for. Umpiring can feel daunting at first but I can guarantee that it becomes extremely rewarding the more you do it. It also helps the club continue to run the number of teams it does and allows all of the players to actually get out there and play every week.

I’d highly recommend speaking to the club and going along to the next umpiring course. Once you have done this you can get out there and practice before you take your L1 assessment and supporting some of the lower teams within the club is a great way to get the experience that you need. I started off with the lovely Ladies 9s and now I am lucky enough to umpire many senior teams from the Mens 3A’s down to the Ladies 9s. I also love getting out there and umpiring many of the Colts teams. Ciara Aldous – Club & Colts Umpire I took up umpiring when I did an umpiring course aged 16. I wanted to be able to umpire and better my coaching skills for younger age groups, from Under 8s all the way up to Under 14s. Since then, I have also umpired for Ladies and Men’s league games. The best thing about umpiring is being able to help and ensure that a game runs fairly, giving each team the opportunity to play their best hockey. The biggest challenge is probably managing players’ emotions when they’re caught up in the heat of the game and maybe not reacting the most rationally! I would definitely encourage more people to get involved with umpiring. Even if the idea of taking the course or umpiring adults is daunting, try umpiring colts matches with younger age groups – it’s a great way to start out!

SPECIAL FEATURE: Club Umpiring

Oliver Fitch – Junior Umpire I first got into umpiring at Surbiton when Will Fulker asked me to umpire a Girls U14 match at the start of this season. I have decided to carry on because it gives you lots of enjoyment and possibilities. I think the biggest reward is getting to see a different part of the game – it’s a different viewpoint to playing. The hardest part is controlling players’ emotions because that is very difficult. I think the most important quality in an umpire is consistency – you always have to be consistent with your decisions so that you don’t appear to favour one team. I would 100% recommend becoming an umpire because you get so many rewards out of it. I think the best way of starting off is to start at a young age group like U12s or U14s, then build yourself up to umpiring at a higher level.

Joanne Moores – Parent Umpire I expressed an interest in becoming an umpire at the beginning of this season. With "old" age and injury worries potentially limiting my playing time in the future, I wanted to find a way to stay involved with SHC and thought that umpiring was the perfect way to achieve this. When the umpire course at SHC in November was announced I think I was the first person to sign up! My first match as an umpire was a Boys U14 game against Teddington at KGS. To say I was nervous was an understatement (even with great support from the second umpire, much re-reading of the rules in advance and questioning what to expect from U14 boys). With a penalty flick and green card in the first half alone I was doubting myself, particularly with friends' sons playing for the home team. However, I was glad to complete my first match – I learnt a lot and know that I can make big improvements for the next game, if anyone will have me! Be brave and just have a go... Don't be put off by the thought of all the teenagers that might also be on your course. Don't think that you're too old to do it – everyone has to start somewhere. If you don't give it a

go you won't know how good you can be, and you're never too old to learn new tricks! Wendy Beaney – Club Umpire I started umpiring at Sir William Perkins' School in 1955 and gained the coveted ‘Acme Thunderer’ Whistle! I gained my ‘C’ grade umpiring award in 1990 and this became Level 1 in 1993. At that time, the SHC Ladies 1s could only play in the league if they had a qualified umpire on the circuit – that was me, but it did often mean I actually missed out on playing in the 1s myself. Over the years I’ve umpired Colts, Men's, Ladies and Mixed matches for SHC and also university matches on Wednesday afternoons. I am still umpiring about once a week. The highlight of my officiating career has been umpiring International Over 60s Men’s teams in World Cups and tournaments all over the world, while my husband Michael was out there playing. My eyesight is not brilliant now, nor is my mobility, but my experience (the more you umpire, the easier it becomes) helps me to cope with the lower teams, so I definitely hope to continue for a while longer.

club even when I’m not actually playing myself.

I joined Surbiton HC in 1994 when I moved to the area. I play in goal and chose Surbiton having had such a warm welcome from Wendy Beaney on the phone!

The biggest challenge is when players (and sometimes supporters) don’t appreciate that we are human and are doing our best. Umpiring definitely requires a sense of humour and patience!

There has always been a need for umpires and as a goalie I wanted to have a bit more of a run about. So about ten years ago I said I would have a go as the club were running an England Hockey umpiring course over several evenings. Having completed my theory, practice matches and assessment I have continued with umpiring when I couldn’t return to goalkeeping after a serious injury. Without umpires there can’t be games so the biggest reward is enabling the club to field so many teams. Umpiring allows me to still be an active member of the

I would definitely encourage others to give umpiring a go. I really enjoy it, it gives you another view of the game, keeps you active in the club and is a great way of meeting other teams too. We are really lucky to have some great umpires affiliated to the club who are often able to come and coach, which is amazing. Doing the England Hockey course is a great way to start, or work with the lower teams in the club just for fun. I think it would be great to see all of our club teams try to get a few more players umpiring.

Ian Wyatt – Umpire Course Liaison

“The biggest quality an umpire can have is confidence with humility. The ability to listen, observe, understand and relate to players makes all the difference. You can then try to respond in ways that keeps any situation calmer without losing respect or authority.” Five Tips to Help You Gain More Confidence as an Umpire 1. The more prepared you are the better you will feel and the more confidence you will have. It’s always good to be confident – or at least come across that way! Before you start, refresh your knowledge of the rules and shadow umpire a game from the sideline or even alongside an existing umpire. 2. Try to start with a supportive, experienced umpire at the other end and in a slower, friendlier game. Chat with your fellow umpire for feedback at half time and after the game. 3. Game management is key. Blow a couple of early decisions to give a clear message. On field positioning is important – try to be in a good place to see what has happened as it makes it easier to get the decision right… but don't expect to get it right every time and don’t be afraid to apologise if you might have got it wrong! 4. It takes time! To start you will miss offences entirely. Next you will spot them and get the decision too late – but that’s a good sign that your brain is getting there. After that you will begin to see and make most decisions easily and quickly. You can expect to improve over a few games – the more games you umpire, the more at ease you will feel. 5. Give it a go and consider doing an umpiring course. You might even enjoy it and we need more umpires to help across the whole club! If you’re interested in completing an Umpiring Course, I’d love to hear from you. Email Ian: ian42wyatt@gmail.com

SPECIAL FEATURE: Club Umpiring Karen Reeves – Club Umpiring Coordinator How is club umpiring organised at SHC? As there are some different rules and allocations from the South and Surrey leagues, the teams without allocated league umpires are coordinated by us. We simply have a list of willing volunteers, who share their preferences for times, teams and their availability and we match them up with as many, or as few games as they would like in the season. Jess Tallent and I coordinate umpires across the club. We allocate two umpires to all home games and ask all our oppositions to do the same in return – this means less travel and more time socialising in the bar for everyone!

around with a whistle, in the wind, rain, snow and occasionally sunshine! We put 40 people through Level 1 courses in 2018/19 and also managed to get nine people qualified as Level 1 umpires. We started the year with two Level 2 and seven Level 1 umpires, so doubling our count is a massive benefit to the club. So far this season we've run one course and put another ten members through.

I think it's easy for people to feel intimidated, or like they'll do a bad job but in a club like ours that isn't the case. We have some really high level games, but also friendlies and lower level games that provide great opportunities for less experienced umpires to What made you want to get involved in this side of practice. We have also established good links with the club? Surrey so have a way to get people assessed and After scrabbling around trying to find qualified umpires through the Level 1 qualification - it doesn't mean you for a couple of seasons, it felt like there was a more have to be a career umpire but it's a useful thing for efficient way to organise umpires, which would take the your hockey CV! pressure off individual captains on a weekly basis. It's not an obvious voluntary position within the club but it makes people's lives easier and means we can be more GET INVOLVED! strategic with allocating umpires to the right teams and level for them. What are the biggest challenges involved in organising our umpires each week? Not everyone wants to be an umpire, so realistically the challenge is still there that sometimes we don't have enough! We have approximately 350 games a year, so if we were able to allocate a few more "one-timers" who volunteered once in a season, it would be a huge help. Other than that, last minute changes are probably the worst thing. Communication is key and we'll always try to help if we know in advance! What’s the most rewarding part of being involved? It's been really great to see people develop through umpiring, from doing the course, to qualifying at Level 1 or just having a go each weekend. I've also really enjoyed seeing people step outside their comfort zones to help each other; it feels like we're more united as a club and I think we've got to know each other better. Hit us with some stats… how big is SHC’s umpiring team and how much are they doing for the club? Last season, we had 52 different umpires cover at least one game in the adult section alone, meaning we provided a whopping 304 home umpires... That's approximately 21,280 minutes of voluntarily running

If this feature has inspired you to find out more or you'd like to get involved as a club umpire, we would love to help you make this happen. COURSES Contact Ian Wyatt to find out about future courses being hosted by Surbiton or external courses ian42wyatt@gmail.com HELP WITH COLTS UMPIRING

L1 CONFIRM PLAYOFF SPOT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Mid Season Review

The Ladies 1s confirmed their spot at the end of season Playoffs back in December having played just 12 of 18 Premier League games. With only six regular league fixtures remaining, it will be vital that the team hit the ground running in February before the fast approaching Playoffs and inaugural EHL competition in early April. Unbeaten so far in the 2019/20 season (11 wins, 1 draw), the L1 have used a blend of youth and experience, with Maddie Long joining a group of colts who have become mainstays of the first team squad in the last 18 months. The chasing pack includes Premier League newcomers Hampstead & Westminster, who the L1s defeated in a standout game in November. The replay at Paddington Rec in March will be a key battle in the run up to the Playoffs. 2019/20 Results so far: Loughborough Students 2 - 3 Surbiton Surbiton 3 - 0 Beeston Surbiton 2 - 1 East Grinstead Clifton Robinsons 0 - 1 Surbiton Surbiton 2 - 0 Bowdon Holcombe 3 - 4 Surbiton University of Birmingham 1 - 3 Surbiton Surbiton 3 - 2 Buckingham Surbiton 3 - 1 Hampstead & Westminster Bowdon 1 - 3 Surbiton Surbiton 1 - 1 University of Birmingham Beeston 1 - 3 Surbiton Top Goalscorers: Erica Sanders - 7 (5 FG, 2 PC) Hannah Martin - 5 (1 FG, 4 PC) Giselle Ansley - 4 (2 PC, 2 PS) Georgie Twigg - 3 (1 FG, 1 PC, 1 PS)

We've only made the semi final of Euros once before and we will do everything we can to get there again and be proud of our performances." Indoor: The L1 endured a tough return to the Indoor Premier League, ultimately losing out to Leicester in a final day relegation battle. A couple of close defeats on the first weekend probably proved decisive in the final outcome, but the group of 13 players who were involved in the indoor programme can be proud of their efforts and a steadily improving level of performance across the very short season. Coach Beckie Middleton: "While getting relegated on the final day was obviously disappointing, one of our targets across the two weekends was to improve game on game and I definitely felt we did this. It was an enjoyable indoor season (albeit too short!) and I am confident that the girls who played will be in a great place to perform well outdoor in a big few months ahead."

SPECIAL FEATURE: SURBITON HC GOALKEEPERS

35

We meet some of Surbiton HC's adult goalkeepers who train together on Monday nights with specialist coaching from Fortitude A number of our adult goalkeepers have been enjoying specialist training at the club every week. The sessions are open to all adult goalkeepers at the club – the only requirements are that you’re keen to learn and have a good time doing it! For more information on how to get involved, please email us at magazine@surbitonhc.com and we’ll put you in touch with the group. Here, we meet a number of our goalkeepers who share their goalkeeping stories and the experiences they’ve had at the club’s goalkeeper training, while coaches Tom Millington and Jack Tranter give us their insights. Lee: I play for the SHC Sparticans. I started at the same time as my daughter! I’ve been playing in goal for three years now and in that time I have won a league with the Sparticans and played at Lee Valley in the Tier 4 Cup Final with a M4/5s team. Prior to joining Surbiton I had never even picked up a hockey stick before, much less received any coaching.

The coaching we get is really top notch and is always tailored to the individuals at the session. We have so much fun as a group… we are all slightly nuts! The best bit about being a goalie is… It’s just you against the ball and you have a chance to be a hero with a logic defying save!

37 Monday nights are my favourite night of the Emma: I have played in goal since I was 12. I loved football and my school team needed a hockey goalie so week! I hang out with some lovely people, hurl roped me in and I loved it! myself around the goal and try new things in a very supportive environment. Jack and Tom from It is hard to find regular GK training at club level. I’m Fortitude make training brilliant fun. ‘unattached’ as far as playing for an SHC team goes – I’m mainly here for the amazing training! It's invaluable The best bit about being a goalie is… I enjoy the to have specialist coaches with genuine goalkeeping pressure, I want to know if I can outwit the attacker credentials giving us such personal advice and pointers. and I like the glory! Our coaches (Tom, Vicky and Jack) are very knowledgeable and always The best bit about being a goalie is… the pressure make time for requests and questions. Without the (which is also the worst thing!) adult GK sessions I definitely wouldn’t feel as confident in goal as I do now. This is partly because my technique is better, but also because I am now in a group of goalies who support and encourage each other. The best bit about being a goalie is… the feeling when you outwit a field player and make the save! Tony: I play for the Men’s 6s and I’ve been a goalkeeper for 19 years, having taken it up in my early 30s.

Emma Pook playing for the RAF Ladies

For me, the most enjoyable things about the Adult GK sessions are the opportunity to increase my skills through repetitive drills, plus there’s a great sense of camaraderie. Practice makes perfect! Jack Tranter is a brilliant coach – he doesn’t let up yet is encouraging, relaxed and informative.

Ian: I took up goalkeeping five years ago and I usually play for the Magnets. I’ve never done any specialist goalkeeper training before but I love the intensity of the The best bit about being a goalie is… being the only one sessions – there’s no standing around while all the in the team. No one understands us! action is happening at the other end of the pitch! The goalies who attend are a competitive bunch, and a real mix of young and old, male and female. I really enjoyed the session and goalkeeper specific drills. The best bit about being a goalie is… you don’t get substituted! Natalie: I’ve been playing in goal for two years and I’ll play for anyone who’ll have me when I’m not running around after my kids! I was inspired to give it a go by my 11 year old daughter and fellow goalkeeper. I love the balance between the out and out physicality of being in goal tempered with the calmness to make better decisions (that’s the bit I struggle with!)

Tony Haycroft kitted up to make some saves!

We've heard from the goalkeepers, but what do the coaches think? Tom Millington and Jack Tranter talk to us about their experiences of delivering specialist coaching to our adult shot stoppers.

Jack: The hardest part in every session is telling them it’s time to go home! We’ve had the floodlights switched off on us many times! Which areas do you think you’ve seen the most improvement since the sessions began? Jack: Balance and controlled movement have been two of our main areas. Most adult goalies are powerful but need some help in controlling that power to maintain composure in the D. Any memorable moments from this season’s adult GK coaching so far? Jack: Andy and Natalie’s ongoing battle for who can injure the other the most has been one of my favourite parts of the sessions. Both of them are completely nuts when they get their kits on and throw themselves into everything!

What do you enjoy about providing our adult goalkeepers with specialist training?

Is there space for more adult goalkeepers to join the sessions?

Tom: Coaching adult goalies are some of the most fun and most rewarding sessions for a coach as there are no expectations on anyone other than to enjoy and learn in a stress free environment.

Jack: Yes, absolutely! I’d encourage anyone to come along, whether it’s to socialise with likeminded people, exercise or just escape home for an hour each week!

Jack: I like the fact that the keepers think of things all week that they then try out or practice at training. It’s great to have a real range of sizes and abilities at the sessions, the GKs really push themselves and it’s a very rewarding bunch to coach.

Tom: I would encourage as many adult goalkeepers as possible to join our specialist training – it’s immensely fun, great exercise and everybody is there to help one another. If you fancy a bit of a challenge then please come along.

What’s the biggest difference when working with adult keepers compared to coaching youngsters? Jack: Adult keepers are far more happy to compare notes and talk through what each other’s styles are, including what they like and don’t like about them. Tom: Compared to coaching younger goalies the adult goalkeeper’s body sometimes don’t work quite as they want it to, but the brain is always switched on – and that’s just as valuable. What’s the biggest challenge? Tom: The biggest challenge is learning something new and feeling uncomfortable for a short period of time before reaping the benefits. Every adult goalkeeper we have coached in the last two years has improved each week purely through their willingness to learn and enjoy it.

Want to join in with the fun? Get in contact: magazine@surbitonhc.com and we will put you in contact with the adult GK training group!

chocolate was a great way to end the road trip, and to make things better the heavy rain only started as we got in the car home.

Boys U14 Scorpions 3 – 2 London Wayfarers BU14 By Ollie F As Surbiton BU14 Scorpions turned up to a sunny Dulwich College to play against London Wayfarers, we all knew that if we won we would go top of the league. Led by Frosty the gameplan was simple, our formation would be a solid 4-5-1 playing counter-attacking hockey. We thought that the plan worked as we won four penalty corners inside five minutes. However, typically we didn't convert any and soon Wayfarers built into the game with our keeper Joe B and our brilliant defence called into urgent action. The gameplan was working because as much as they had 70% possession we looked a massive threat on the counterattack and they couldn't score. We managed to survive until half time where we rebuilt our confidence. However, unfortunately this didn't work as after a PC they rebounded it in after Joe's brilliant save. We regrouped knowing that the game was still in the balance with over 20 minutes left. Then, as we won our seventh PC, we converted after a smart deflection from Ollie F, wrong footing the keeper. We now held the momentum and as Freddie L ran down the baseline and slapped the ball into the D, a deflection from a Wayfarer defender took it away from the keeper and into the net. As Freddie was inside the D it was a goal despite their protests. However Wayfarers came back strongly and with just three minutes left on the clock despite Joe and three defenders’ best efforts on the line we just couldn't stop the ball from finding its way into the goal. With just two minutes left Wayfarers wanted the draw which would keep them top of the table so they were already celebrating when Sam C received the ball in front of goal and nutmegged the keeper to secure a tense 3-2 victory for Surbiton. Special thanks to Frosty, our coach. A celebratory

Boys U14 Dev C 2 – 0 Old Cranleighans BU14 B By Olly B Frankie drove us to play an unfamiliar tactic, due to sickness and availability leaving us with an incomplete squad. We dominated for the first 20 minutes, with great passing, but the goal eluded us. Then Olly S got onto the byline of the opposition’s half and managed to get it past the keeper. We were at 1-0 at half time, just as the rain… followed by hail joined us. Some clever hockey lead to Max M running across the byline, passing across the goal to Olly B who tapped it in to make it 2-0. By the end of the game the rain subsided, leaving us with a massive rainbow under which we could celebrate our win. Thanks have to go to our supporters who cheered us on (even through the hailstones).

All proceeds from the day, including a cake sale, raffle and ‘Hardest Hit’ competition were donated to our club charities - including Cardiac Risk in the Young and the Ben Williams Trust. We have raised a significant amount of money for these amazing causes. “Thank you so much for organising such a fantastic tournament yesterday. It was really well organised and the hospitality was great.” Guildford HC

ASPIRE USA With the help of club sponsor Aspire USA, Surbiton youngster Issy Carey has secured a scholarship at Stanford. Here's more about her experience. Find out more about how Aspire USA can help you: www.aspireusa.uk.com @aspireUSA1 holly@aspireusa.uk.com

1. What made you decide to look to the US for university? I have been interested in going to the States since I was young. The idea of being a student athlete always stood out to me and I knew it was something I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else in the UK, as well as the amazing opportunities it would open up for me both for my hockey and my career.

what to look for outside of hockey and academics when I first visited Stanford but quickly realised that a very positive environment and experience can make the world of difference. However, on the hockey front, I wanted to be part of a team where I knew I could grow and develop but also have a clear role in the team where I could help lead and make an impact on and off the pitch. 4. How do you think your hockey will progress in the US? One thing I am really excited about is the way in which my fitness and general athleticism should improve at Stanford. The student athlete programmes at many US schools provide amazing facilities which are aimed to help athletes reach their peak physical performance and I am really looking forward to being a part of it.

2. Why did you pick Stanford? I picked Stanford because of the amazing atmosphere and feeling I had when I was there. The campus was gorgeous and I got on very well with all the girls in the team, but most importantly I could really see myself being happy there. Obviously, the academics and hockey played a big part, but overall I was just really content.

5. What was your experience going through the process of finding a scholarship and do you have any tips? I really enjoyed the process of looking at and talking to universities. Luckily I was able to attend a summer hockey camp at Stanford where I met many other girls from the team and was able to get a taste of the university, therefore I would recommend attending some 3. What were the deciding factors in choosing a of these camps just to understand what the atmosphere university? is like on and off the pitch. My biggest tip would be to For me the most important thing I wanted in a university make sure that you trust your instincts and make sure was a good atmosphere, not only in the team but you choose the university where you feel happiest, throughout the whole university. I didn’t know exactly regardless of their ranking or name.

Stanford University, California, ranks as one of the world's top universities

SHC is Going Greener... and you could save on your energy bills too! In an effort to go greener and save money on our £25k annual electricity bill, SHC have recently moved electricity supplier to Bulb Energy. Bulb is the UK’s largest green supplier providing 100% renewable electricity from solar, wind and hydro. Bulb has one tariff, it's one of the lowest on the market (renewable or not), and they don’t charge exit fees - that’s how confident they are in their offering. We have now also been approved as a Bulb affiliate, so for every member signing up to Bulb through our link below, the club will receive £40. For every 100 of our members who switch, we will receive £4,000 which we will then use to fund additional efficiency initiatives such as replacing LED lights in the clubhouse, energy and water saving devices, and in time LED flood lights. The more money we raise and save from being more efficient, the less money we have to raise directly from members! So if you want to help the planet, help your pocket and help your hockey club, please use this link to switch to Bulb. https://bulb.sjv.io/qKO7j

MATCH TEAS CORNER

INTRODUCING… DJ Lee Name: Lee Graves Age: 24 When did you start working at Surbiton HC? 2013 Do you or have you ever played hockey? I played hockey in school… but I realised it wasn’t for me! What work do you do outside the club? I run my own house music events and label company (FAK3 Music) with a few friends, we established it three years ago. Since we started out I have played at some of London’s biggest clubs, made my debut at Spring Break Festival in Amsterdam and we sold out our last event. I also run a mobile DJ company – I do private parties at very affordable prices and have played at Surbiton HC many times at events for parents and Colts. Any particularly memorable moments from your time with SHC? Celebrating with the Men’s 1s and Ladies 1s after both teams had won the league… this was after my shift of course! The best thing about working behind the bar at SHC is… The general buzz around the club throughout all the teams and its members. Everyone at the club has been a pleasure to serve during the years I’ve worked at the bar.

Every week of the season our marvellous chefs Oli and Hugh serve up the best match teas in the land. Can't wait until Saturday to find out what you'll get after your game? Check out the menu in the Weekly Newsletter or on the blackboard in the bar!
