oakey THE small town of Oakey, located just 20 minutes north-west of Toowoomba and 140km west of Brisbane, was settled in the early 1840s, when the value of its grazing land was discovered. A pastoral community was soon established and began to flourish with the building of the western railway line. Although Jondaryan was the first town in the area, Oakey soon outpaced its development to establish itself as the bigger of the two. Oakey offers an authentic country experience. The Oakey Historical Museum is a must see for all visitors and is sure not to disappoint. A popular draw card is also the Australian Army Flying Museum where you'll see every kind of aircraft flown by the Australian Army since World War II, including the latest high-tech military helicopters. The very famous racehorse which hailed rom the area, Bernborough, is celebrated in a life size bronze statue that stands proudly outside the Jondaryan service centre.

events • OAKEY STREET SPRINTS • THE QLD HERITAGE RALLY • GARDEN CITY COUNTRY MUSIC CLUB JUNIOR COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL

Oakey offers plenty in the way of attractions and accommodation with motels, pubs, a caravan park and bed and breakfast accommodations just a short drive from regional wineries, with restaurants featuring fresh local produce and the finest beef.

Only 45km north-west of the city, this little town is home to one of Australia's most important historic agricultural sites - the Jondaryan Woolshed. Situated just a few minutes out of the town itself, the Jondaryan Woolshed is a great place for a day trip. This magnificent building oozes character and charm. Built in 1859, it was the grandest and largest woolshed in the world and it is still the largest and most original woolshed left in Australia. The eastern wing is unrestored and is just as it was in 1859 when it was built. In fact, you can stand at the door of the Woolroom and look out to the west and see the same view as people did in 1859. Open 7 days a week from 9.00am to 4.30pm, except for Christmas and Boxing days, the Woolshed hosts weddings, school excursions and corporate events. Special events throughout the year that all visitors can enjoy include sensational New Year's Eve, Easter and Australia Day celebrations. The pinnacle of the year at the Jondaryan Woolshed is the Jackie Howe Festival of the Golden Shears.

This popular festival, set to take place in September from 2014 alongside the Australian Heritage Festival, runs over three days and celebrates the history of the wool industry.

cecil plains The town was founded in November 1841 when then 22 year old Henry Stuart Russell claimed Cecil Plains Station, running cattle. The township sprung up around the station buildings, and the house that Russell lived in still stands today. Agriculture is the main industry of the town, with cotton generally the crop of choice on the area's dark black, fertile plains. The Cecil Plains Cotton Gin operates from April to August, and runs 24 hours per day, seven days a week during the cotton harvesting season. It is open for visits during April and July. The timber industry, which has sustained the town since the 1800s, is still in full swing with Cypress Pine delivered to the three sawmills in town. The timber is then shipped throughout Australia and overseas.

Cecil Plains is serviced by a library, tennis courts, recreation ground, swimming pool, golf club and community hall. Those looking to drop a line in the Condamine River can make the most of a reserve adjacent to the bridge, which has boat ramp facilities, barbecues and public toilets. Cecil Plains State School caters for children from preschool to Year 10, after which students usually travel to Dalby to complete senior years of high school. Cecil Plains did not get its own pub until 1938, nearly 100 years after settlement. Teetotallers twice voted against having a drinking establishment, before it was voted through and the Victory Hotel opened. Today, tourists can visit the Cecil Plains Homestead, which now operates as a Country Stay Bed and Breakfast. Cecil Plains also has a store, post office and caravan park. BAR

Allan has had a long association with the mountains of some 43 years and has gathered much information over that time and consequently, has many a story to share. He insists that at least half the stories are true but all would agree, they are incredibly entertaining. Currently the tours main team of Clydesdales is Logan and Harry but there is also Boots, Logan's younger brother on hand, who is in training to take over from Harry when the time is right, as Harry has been with the crew for about 20 years. The trips vary in length from a 10 minute trip, through to a 2 hour trip into the rainforest where guests meander down an old logging track in private rainforest to the base of a big old fig tree, boil the billy on the campfire and have freshly baked damper with butter and syrup. Bunya nuts are roasted on the fire as well. For those who want to watch the sun setting around a campfire, Bunya Mountains Horse Drawn Tours offer a trip to their private viewing deck. This is an interactive tour where guests can get involved with feeding the horses if they choose and includes a night walk where all endeavour to discover some of the local night creatures. Each year Brigalow hold an annual charity bush day including potty rides, a bullock ride, novelty events including egg, wheel barrow and sack races with an additional element of a power play - men against women in teams of two. There is also a chook catch - chooks are let loose in the Rodeo arena for the children to catch, the prize being that you get to take the chook home and cook it! This is a fun bush day in September and visitors are very welcome. You can always have a go at Brigalow's super grass tennis court or have a family game of cricket at the recreational grounds. Try your luck and throw a line in the Condamine River for the catch of the day.

Explore Charley's Creek by foot or take a break at Chinchilla Weir. Drop a line at one of the many watering holes perfect for fishing and water sports. Fingerlings of Perch, Catfish, and Murray Cod are released each year to ensure all waterways remain fully stocked. Otcober is a lovely time in Chinchilla and riders from all over Queensland converge here to participate in the fine Australian sport of campdrafting. The Grandfather Clock Campdraft is one of the most prestigious campdrafts in Australia and is one of the 'big three' that make up the Triple Crown series of campdrafts in October. The four day event attracts some of the best horses and competitors in the country, vying for over $60,000 in prizemoney and a shot at the $30,000 Triple Crown. On the last Saturday before Christmas, townsfolk head to the racetrack for The Chinchilla Cup, for a mirthful and lighthearted day. Once the horses are in safely in the stables, the Christmas celebrations continue with Carols by Candlelight. Another great family activity is fossicking. Petrified wood occurs in abundance in the Chinchilla area and is much sought after by

lapidary enthusiasts for its quality and colours. Three landowners in the Chinchilla area have given a general permission for fossicking at specific sites on their properties; fossickers must ensure they comply with the special conditions of access. Collectors from all over the world come to find their own piece of 'Chinchilla Red', a distinctive red petrified wood used to make clocks. You can purchase your fossicking licence and map at the Chinchilla information centre. The Information Centre is an inviting place where you can find out about anything in the town, along with other attractions worth visiting.

honour our war heroes The Meandarra ANZAC Memorial Museum typifies the bravery and self-sacrifice of the first Anzacs, housing a large and comprehensive display of military memorabilia collected by dedicated locals over the past 30 years. The artefacts cover many of the battles in which our local war veterans fought, representing the three Armed Services of Navy, Army and Air Force. The contrasting diversity of the Museum's pieces gives Meandarra a very unique collection including an elevated Canberra Bomber, a Grant Tank in North African colours and a Water Buffalo tank from the South West Pacific Campaigns. Be moved by the displays of heartfelt letters and cards sent by local diggers to their families back home in The Bunker display, learn the history of each artefact through meticulously researched interpretive panels, and allow your little ones to experience the honour of trying on a real armed services uniform in the kid's corner. From 1942 3CR RAFF Kowguran …

During World War II RAAF Kowguran Sub-depot to No 3 Central Reserve Explosive Store was located 20 kilometres north of Miles on the Leichhardt Highway (350 kilometres west of Brisbane). 3CR comprised 20 concrete underground bunkers and 25 timber accommodation and administration buildings. Normal strength for the unit was about 60 airmen and officers. RAAF Kowguran was the main explosive store on the Brisbane line holding, at times 2500 tonnes of bombs and ammunition. In 1957 RAAF Kowguran was disbanded and all but the underground bunkers and two small brick buildings sold for removal.

… To today Possum Park

Today all of the explosives are gone. In 1985 David and Julie Hinds purchased the disused bunkers on 360 acres of land and renamed RAAF Kowguran as Possum Park. Since then several of the underground bunkers have been converted into modern self contained motel units for tourist accommodation. Page 29

condamine THE TOWN OF CONDAMINE IS 34 KMS SOUTH OF MILES AND IS LOCATED BEAUTIFULLY ON THE MEANDERING CONDAMINE RIVER. The use of the Condamine River by many famous authors including Steel Rudd and 'Breaker' Morant to depict an unforgettable Australian scene holds true today with a truly superb lingering and fishing spot. Some time ago a local Condamine blacksmith, Samuel William Jones, invented a cowbell which was tied around the necks of cattle for the purpose of locating them when they strayed into the bush. The bell was so large and loud that it was referred to as the 'BullFrog' bell. Today it is referred to as the Condamine Bell and a giant replica stands proud in the park. As highlighted within Chinchilla's events, the Condamine campdraft is part of the Triple Crown Campdraft Series. The Condamine Bell trophy is as famous amongst campdrafters as the Condamine River is to the people of Australia. This campdraft held annually in October attracts the cream of the crop - where quality horse riders and expensive Australian Stock Horses vie for the $120,000 prize money. The October campdraft weekend culminates with a fast paced and highly spectacular Rodeo - where only the toughest can win.

The idea came about when market organiser Chris and Jackie

Offering a great variety of stalls ranging from, bric a brac to homemade items, arts, plants, home baked goods, toys and so much more -this market is a must-see for anyone passing through the town. The response is so quick and responsive it must be told many times over. The Wandoan Information Centre in Royds Street can provide the full details of these sincere interest points.

This is the original site of the Juandah Head Station, the heart of a settlement which later became known as Wandoan. At full running capacity, Juandah Station employed up to 80 stockmen to run up to 50,000 head of cattle. A unique experience such as this just cannot be afforded elsewhere, thanks to the fact that some of the original buildings dating back to the 1850's, or their footprints, can be seen today. These buildings include the old Juandah Store, built before 1853, which contains a room that later became the first school room for the area. The Tuesday store sale can attract up to 10,000 head of cattle and is a feast for the senses. Guided tours of the Saleyards are now available every Tuesday morning starting at 9am conducted by veterans of the industry and are a must for anyone keen to understand a bit more about this vital cog of the local economy. Just be careful not to raise your arm at the wrong time or you might find yourself the proud owner of a pen of cattle! roma enjoy crisp country air with an el dorado farm visit Get off the beaten track, take a deep breath and inhale some good, country air with an El Dorado Farm Visit. No one famous has lived at El Dorado and nothing infamous has happened there. It has been home to four hard working families for over 100 years, providing them with a comfortable living during the good years and a bit of a struggle through the bad. The trip out and back will provide many opportunities to show and discuss the many varieties of native and introduced species in the area. The first stop on the tour will be to have a look at the large stand of grasstrees that grow in the area and the vegetation and soil that differs so greatly from that around El Dorado. El Dorado overlooks the Grafton Range. From the top of the hill overlooking the house visitors will be able to see across to the Brindley Park Feedlot which is run by Australian Country Choice. They will be informed how this family is trying to look after the soil, the environment and make a living from the land.

Upon arrival at the homestead visitors will be given instructions as to where they may safely walk. There will be opportunities to feed, pat and have photos taken with horses or Bikkie the friendly "poddy" calf. The farm animals are not on the payroll but may be making appearances at some point of the tour. Thankfully El Dorado has undergone a transformation over its 100 years. Once a "high" house with a high pitched roof, El Dorado is now low with a "normal" roof. Rooms have been added and changed but the original timber work cut on El Dorado and milled north of the property at Mooga Hills still exists. The house is not open to the public, however on a warm day, the hall may be left open. Visitors are welcome to wander around the house and into the garden. Visitors will be invited to grab a cuppa and something to eat and wander about the garden. It is not a competition garden, but a haven for us to relax and escape to.

El Dorado FARM VISITS BUS TRIP FARM TOURS - EACH WEDNESDAY Get off the beaten track and up close and personal with the farm animals and the local vegetation and fauna at El Dorado. Join us for a cuppa and a light lunch, take a wander through the gardens, a guided trip around our working farm and learn the history of our pioneers. The El Dorado Homestead is over 100 years old and is surrounded by lovely landscaped surroundings. The bus leaves the Visitor Information Centre each Wednesday at 9.15am and returns approx 1.30pm. The Roma Picnic Races in March are also a big event on the calendar with its glamorous Black Tie Ball and every second September the track is transformed into a festival site for the Food and Fire Festival which commemorates the town's rich oil and gas history with some great live music and gastronomic experiences. On a more gentle note, before leaving Roma you must see the beautiful stained glass and leadlight windows of St Paul's Anglican Church. Mungindi is a unique town which straddles the Barwon River, with either side of the river marking the border between Queensland and New South Wales. Visit Cameron Corner to see surveyor JB Cameron's famous surveyor peg. The One Ton Post is the original survey peg whereas Cameron Corner has sadly had to replace theirs with a cement marker. In the thick of the bush just outside of Mungindi, the One Ton Post stands out as a remarkable physical monument erected in 1881 to mark the end of the arduous three year task of surveying the straight section of the Qld/NSW border, from Cameron's Corner to the Barwon River.

dirranbandi If you're looking for a quiet spot to picnic, throw a line in, or stretch your legs, then head to the Jack Dwyer Memorial Park on the edge of Dirranbandi. On a visit to Railway Park, you'll find the old waiting room, the original parcels office and the 1913 Station Master's residence, which is now the Rural Transaction Centre and provides visitor information. A bronze statue in the centre of town celebrates the remarkable story of Aboriginal man Tom Dancey, the 1910 winner of Australia's most famous foot race the Stawell Gift.

The soil gets redder as you approach this great little western town, and sitting on the banks of the peaceful Wallam Creek is the tranquil town of Bollon. At the free caravan and camping area there are plenty of shady spaces to park the van for a few days on the edge of the picturesque creek, and an easy 1.2km stroll along the creek-side walkway provides access to the little town's main street. So that you won't have to 'rough it', you'll have the comfort of free showers and toilets. Have your cameras ready as Bollon is famous for emus strolling the streets. If you do one thing in town, spend the afternoon retracing Bollon's rural history at the Heritage Centre or browse around the historical shearing display at Deb's Café. For the serious campers and four-wheel drive enthusiasts, Thrushton National Park is 60km north of Bollon via dirt roads. Experience the beautiful Balonne Shire your way. Do you prefer to chill out on your own, meet other travellers or get to know a local? Whether you imagine quiet nights by the campfire or the lively atmosphere of a country pub, turn your dreams into reality when you visit the west. As the sign on the Bollon Pub aptly sums up 'there are no strangers here, just friends you haven't met yet.

It was filmed here and the café's boomerangs remain perched in place. Pack your appetite as the challenge of the 'road train' awaits - a whopper 5kg burger, big enough to feed you and 10 of your closest mates. cooladdi Cooladdi was originally named "Yarronvale", and was changed to its present name in 1913, Cooladdi, being aboriginal for "Black Duck". Cooladdi's history dates back to a time long before rail transportation was introduced, and it went on to be a major centre until the rail moved on in 1914. In it's heyday Cooladdi boasted a school, butcher shop, post office, store and police station accommodating 270 residents. Today the town only lays claim to a population of 6, with most services offered by the roadhouse titled the Fox Trap. Quilberry Creek is a great spot to for great Outback Camping, do some fishing, go swimming or yabbying. Call into the Foxtrap for directions. Cooladdi Foxtrap gets its name from past owner Mr Bob Fox (Bob loved a yarn - legend has it that you would call in for a drink and leave two days later! - hence the name "Cooladdi Foxtrap"). On the way to the Opals fields, Cooladdi is an ideal spot to stop and recharge your batteries. Get all the local visitor information, stock up on cool drinks or grab something to eat in the licensed restaurant. The Foxtrap also has accommodation, fuel and acts as the local Post Office.

Dear Janelle, We have really enjoyed our visit to Eromanga, 108km west of Quilpie. It is known as the furthest town from the sea in Australia and in recent years Australia's largest Dinosaur bones have been discovered in the area. It has lots of great things to see while you are there such as: • The Quilpie Shire Living History Museum • Town Historical Walk • Opalopolis Park • Outdoor Machinery Museum • Natural History Museum If you're looking for somewhere to stay there is the Royal Hotel, Motel or Caravan Park and even free camping on the town common. With so much to do in Eromanga for the whole family a visit to Eromanga is a must!

Hello Jess, We are really enjoying our time in the Quilpie Shire, especially our Trip to Adavale, only 96km North of Quilpie. There is so much for visitors to enjoy such as their Outdoor Mini Museum, Police Hut Museum, Historical Town Walk, Military Memorial and the historic Adavale Pub. And to top off a great trip we even ventured to some of the nearby National Parks. Free camping with facilities are available to visitors at the Adavale Hall. The Hall also has a wonderful display of Historic photographs from the Adavale area. Did you know that Adavale is the oldest town in the Quilpie Shire? We are off to try our luck at catching a Yellow Belly in the nearby Blackwater Creek. We hope you enjoy your trip to Adavale as much as we did……and still are!!!!

Visit the literal "End of the Railway Line", the old Powerhouse Museum and the Mini Museum at the Airport, dedicated to the old Wool Scour and the unexpected landing of Amy Johnson. There is just so much to do in Quilpie, you'll be spoilt for choice.

adavale With some of the most impressive scenery to be seen, the Adavale drive offers tourists opportunities to get off the beaten track and enjoy the freedom of the outback. There are great spots along the river for fishing, camping and birdwatching. A Mini Museum in the old butcher house displays local relics from over a century ago.

eromanga Eromanga is famous on several counts, firstly for being the furthest town from the ocean in Australia, but the most exciting is the significant paleontological discoveries of Australia's largest dinosaurs on a property near Eromanga. Several dinosaurs have been unearthed and the area is being heralded by scientists as the most exciting and prolific dinosaur site in Australia. The bones will be displayed in the "Eromanga Natural History Museum" which is proposed to be built in the near future.
