Settlement Extension

-Supriya Jagtap & Eva Cheung (Y6 final project)

Atelier - Continuity in Architecture

Our thesis investigated the sustainable future of small settlements in NWEngland. The research began with the study of a number of settlements including Bakewell, Cartmel, Bollington, Ambleside etc. Data derived from the analysis of the chronological development of these settlements was utilized to generate statements of their consistencies. These statements were then used as a design guide to propose development for the regeneration of the settlement of Hayfield while encouraging inter-generational communities and self-sufficiency.

The proposal harmonizes the new development with the existing and details the junction where ‘the new meets the old’. It attempts to recreate the organic expansion that has taken place over the years retaining spaces with the ‘English village charm’. Mediating the needs of a modern progressive community and retaining what is valued from our collective pasts.

01
View of existing buildings View of proposed extension

Adaptive Re - Use : New meets Old

Derelict existing buildings adjacent to a restaurant in central Hayfield are repurposed as a part of the proposed redevelopment. The restaurant itself is provided a two storey human scale extension, bulit whilst allowing for the most use of locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship.

To accommodate the needs of the future generations the design focused on modifying the existing buildings to be self-sustaining units and designing new lasting structures that could be easily repurposed. A new landmark civic building is proposed next to the square, the massing and height of which break the skyline with a distinctive feature to serve wayfinding.

Public realm design : Reclaiming the Road

Part of our proposal for the expansion to the settlement of Hayfield included resolving the existing issues. The dual carriageway A 624 split the village into two halves restricting movement from one part to another. A centrally located crossing square on the dual carriageway is proposed to overcome this divide.

The square is designed to prioritize the pedestrian movement over the movement of vehicles. A mixed-use new development is proposed around the sqaure to support the local economy and enable self-sustainability.

the proposal

Manchester being a diverse multicultural city along with a significant older population requires a housing scheme that is inclusive and flexible enough to accomodate the demographic’s diverse needs. Centered around this idea my individual design of a housing scheme within the masterplan explores intergenerational coliving, dwelling typologies and flexibility of layouts to cater to the needs of different tenants.

The design manifesto was a result of analysis of different user profiles based on aging trends observed in the urban context of Manchester. Breaking the old preceptions, the scheme ensures that the spaces are flexible enough for people to engage in their hobbies/interests. The scheme also provides social strategies for interaction.

Intergenerational Co-living

(Y5 project)

Atelier - &architecture

The project aimed to design an inclusive medium- density housing scheme in Collyhurst - an area in the north of Manchester’s city center. Working in-line with the Far East Consortium and Manchester City Council, in a group we investigated what an inclusive scheme would actually entail and designed a master-plan spread across a site within the Northern Gateway.

The masterplan utilises some of the design strategies defined within the Manchester Residential Quality Guidance document however our research also looked to question whether this design guide is as inclusive as it could be. Designed as per the NG-SRF , (Northern Gateway Strategic Regeneration Framework) The master-plan developed into a series of individual design responses that each tackle part of the research question and together provides a well rounded design appoach.

Vertical adaptability

Two single storey apartments on adjacent floors can be transformed into a single duplex apartment. By dismantling the detachable floor planks and installing a prefabricated staircase unit, the two apartments can be connected to form a single large unit. The tenants can choose to adapt the flexible layout according to their needs.

Vocational skill institute

Location: Pashan, Pune.

Site Area: 25400 sq.mtrs Built: 8345 sq.mtrs

Climate: Pune has a hot semi-arid climate (type BSh) bordering with tropical wet and dry (type Aw) with average temperatures ranging between 21 and 30 °C

My graduate thesis proposal - A Vocational Skill institute / trade school, one that provides the education & training in technical skills required to perform the tasks of a particular job. The design response is hugely influenced by the topography of the contoured site .The level difference is compensated by providing ramps, stairs and sloping pathways, bridges etc. that connect the different building blocks.

03

The brief and concept

The institute houses learning spaces both outdoors & indoors, specially catering to the pedagogies of the taught skills. Additionally the campus also includes spaces for interaction, recreation, physical development as well as common areas, exhibition spaces, a library, etc. The project is a campus with individual workshop areas for Skills such as Carpentry, Masonry, Photography, Pottery, Sculpting, Painting & Horticulture.

The design concept focused on developing the bulit as a part of the natural lanscape with underground spaces, green terraces, ramps and bridges helping with the seamless transition from one space to another. The floor and roof levels are carefully considered so as to work with the landscape and not against it. An important consideration was to incorporate the large existing trees with the built form.
