Until the declaration ofindependence in 1947, the square served as the site for political meetings, speeches, congresses and silent marches. aling with the clock tower that collapsed in 1952, the townhall was, and still is, one of the biggest landmarks of Chandni Chowk in walled city of delhi.

Sanjhi Art from Mathura, is a truly unique craft form that features exquisite designs and intricate picture motifs, cut into paper.

Craftsmen use specially designed scissors to accomplish this process. The art grew in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the walls and floors of temples were decorated with Sanjhi motifs. The Sanjhi is an ancient art of religious origin, which consists of creating drawings on the ground or on water using finely cut stencils that are filled with colored powders. Traditionally, this art depicts the mythological legends of India and especially those of Lord Krishna.

Sanjhi has gradually fallen into disuse.

Patachitra is a unique folk tradition of visual storytelling accompanied by songs performed by the Patuas. Stories are painted on long scrolls by the painters known as chitrakars (family surname) who gradually unfurl them while narrating. Patas scroll painting is one of the earliest art forms in Bengal and started with the most ancient peoples of the Austro-Asiatic culture.

The early reference of the people practicing with art form is found in Brahamabaivartha Purana.

Patuas, according to the text, were the descendants of the supreme artist Lord Vishwakarma and his wife Ghritachi.s.
