(THOUGHTS)

After putting deep thought into it, I have now realized that my design philosophy is based on my obsession with seeing things balanced. Unless specifically instructed, I have to make things balanced. Now for me, balance doesn’t just mean perfectly spaced outlines and shapes. For me, balance can happen when imperfect things come together in a beautiful flow. In my experience, this design approach of mixing and matching seemingly imperfect things can yield the most personal and creative design work. One area of my design strengths is that I am a fluid adaptor of incorporating subtle the idiosyncrasies of people and objects into design works. In other words, I am super detailed in away that I can notice and bring out the unique characteristics in all things with my design work.

Design a conceptual cookbook that explore and represent food as a form of art. Mix and match different colors and typography to yield a mood and tone that represent the unique dishes in the cookbook.

A PPR OAC H

The design approach was to embrace the unique dining experience of Thai street food. Crowded and clusterphobic back alley food stands are fully equipped with colorful cups, plates, and utensils. Spaces are fully decorated with tacky cultural relics and religious talismans. Food packagings and labels also inspired my design approaches via implementation of thick lines, fun and energetic typefaces.

Design a poster for a song to illustrate the emotions that are evoked when listening to the song.

A PPR OAC H

The song I picked was “Thinking Bout You” by Frank Ocean. The artist’s unique style was carefully considered when coming up with initial design ideas. The colors for the design were inspired solely by my feelings when I listened to the song. The colors were the of the sunset in late summer in California.

The design approach was to embrace the unique characteristics of the architect’s designs. Blueprints were the primary source of color inspiration. I decided on a monochrome design for the overall look because the architect is a Mid-century modern designer who is famous for minimalism and simplicity. One typeface was chosen to reflect the geometric characteristics of the architect’s design. Another typeface was chosen to reflect the design style of the architect’s era.

Design a black & white poster that illustrates how I feel about the word pandemonium. The word itself gives me a sense of anxiety. Chaos is not the first thing I think about. This word makes me feel like someone who wants to get out of an uncomfortable setting. The objective is to try to capture these complicated thoughts and emotions in a design.

A PPR OAC H

The design approach was to first visualize what I think and feel about the word. For me, pandemonium is associated with a society. How can there be chaos if I am all by myself? Letters from the alphabets are floated over the poster to represent a crowd caught in a confusing society. I used swirling design manipulations to show confusion.

To rebrand a declining or defunct brand that includes visual and business strategy guidelines for outlining future ambitions.

A PPR OAC H

The design approach focused on coming up with a new logo that is simple yet has strong visual recollection characteristics. The original logo lacked character because it was just logotype using Helvetica. My vision was to design a simple and professional logo that can also embody what the brand stands for. I used bold lines in symmetric arrangements to show stability. I also assigned different logo colors to represent different sub-brands for future expansions.

To design a hypothetical exhibition of a renowned artist or designer. In addition, design catalog and museum newsletter to inform about exhibition updates.

A PPR OAC H

My artist of choice was Basquiat. He is known for his loud, colorful, complex, and chaotic visual representations. Due to the strong characteristics of the artist’s visual works, my design was focused on being minimal and complementing. I did not want my design to clash with the artist’s originality. For the logotype, I only relied on simple type manipulation. Additionally, other than the color black, I only used one other color in my overall design.

To design a book with my own writings that is essentially an in-depth personal journal based on my everyday routine and its analysis within my surroundings.

A PPR OAC H

My book was about tracking the wastes that I produce from my day to day living. Instead of taking pictures of my trash, I decided to use a scanner because it gave better color and depth. This gave the feeling that this trash was really a waste. The print material of choice was a newsprint paper because I believe this resonates well with my theme of sustainability.

To design a unique and engaging application based on personal interests. The goal of this project was to get a better perspective UI/UX design principles and apply in this project.

A PPR OAC H

The application that I decided to design was a natural wine subscription app. The design inspirations mainly came from the fun and colorful bottle labels of various natural wine brands. The aim was to make a minimalistic interface packed with useful information that is also easy to use. For that matter, I relied heavily on the usage of icons. Most people just skim over things on their smartphones, so I tried to ignore using as many lines of words as I could.
