Clackamas Fire District #1 Company Performance Standard:

SEARCH

VENT/ ENTER /SEARCH CPS# 03-04 Objective: Given a known rescue or circumstance requiring search to locate and save a human life exist; the company will complete a Vent/Enter/Search (V.E.S).

PASSING STANDARD; The Red Bold are Critical Failure. If Critical Failure is missed it is an Automatic Fail. Must complete CPS with 80% accuracy.

Procedures This task will be completed with Firefighter(s) in full turnouts, gloves and wearing SCBA. Personnel completing this task will have a portable radio that is set to the assigned frequency.

FF(s) should have the following minimum equipment: TIC 6’ hook or Rubbish Hook Halligan Tool Ground Ladder Flashlight Colorado Belt with PSL Consider : MSL Aerial Ladder / Secondary ground ladders CO or FF B completes V.E.S size-up.

1. Completes a 360 survey of the structure.

CO or FF B communicates actions to the IC and coordinates: Coordinate Fire attack and Discontinue PPV and or attack lines to limit over pressurizing the room/area you are to search.

Announce entry point Announce who is making entry (entire crew or Team A/B) If required for access place ground ladder at the sill of entry point.

FF A should place hook and halligan on ladder as far up as possible.

FF A should ascend ladder and break window using a 6’ pike pole or rubbish hook.

Clear entry point of all debris and evaluate interior conditions with your TIC for: High heat Thermal layer intact Color of smoke Pressure/Turbulence of smoke evaluated Victim location Check structural stability (Sound as you go) Room lay out FF A should sound the floor with the hook, for stability, debris and victims near entry point.

FF A should then place the hook on the sill with handle pointing into the room.

CO or FF B communicates over radio that FF A entering the building. FF A enters the window head first, stays low to the ground.

FF A must maintain contact with exterior person via voice, sight, touch or be on PSL/MSL. FF A goes first to the: Interior door Quickly check hallway with light and TIC for possible victims and Close the door to provide tenable environment.

CO or FF B remains at the entry point (Tip of ladder) and monitors interior conditions and communicates with FF A. FF A quickly searches the interior room, provides rescue if needed.

FF A exits IDLH upon completion of search and CO notifies command via radio.
