Bauma, Bauma, Bauma!
Ever been to Bauma in Munich, Germany? Congratulations if you have; what I say below won’t be news to you. For those who haven’t, you simply MUST put it on your list of things to do.
It’s just you and 600,000 of your closest friends in a celebration of construction and mining! From the PC7000 mining shovel to autonomous vehicles to attachments, Bauma offers an overwhelming number of products from around the world.
As an example, Liebherr’s
booth was roughly 150,000 sq ft (20% larger than Tradex Abbotsford) and housed over 70 machines from their new autonomous wheel loader to their largest crawler cranes. Their tradeshow building was constructed over several months and housed upwards of 2,000 employees during the event.
The show spanned 7 days and included over 6.6 million sq ft of display space: 2M sq ft inside of 18 individual buildings and 4.6M sq ft of outside.
Tigercat releases L857 feller buncher and LH857 harvester, both built on the new sloping tail platform for steep terrain logging.
Tigercat has released two new track carrier models based on the new sloping tail platform for steep terrain
harvesting operations. Both the L857 feller buncher and LH857 harvester are pow-
ered by the efficient Tigercat FPT N67 engine. Power is delivered to the track drives via a refined, efficient open loop hydraulic system, providing high tractive effort and excellent performance on steep slopes.
The L857 combines the stability of a full tail swing upper with a sloped tail for enhanced leveling capability and additional chain clearance for winch assisted operation on steep mountain terrain.
The sloping tail platform takes ground based steep terrain logging to the next level. Optimized weight distribution and low centre of mass, along with Tigercat’s patented super duty leveling undercarriage provide the operator with comfort, stability and confidence on steep terrain. The sloped tail profile provides increased leveling capability to 26 degrees, and better cable clearance in winch assisted applications. For roadside processing applications, the sloping tail with its ability to clear obstacles allows the LH857 to work more effectively on smaller, congested landings.
Other enhancements include further improvements
to service access, and in-tank hydraulic filtration for extended service intervals. The side opening engine enclosure completely exposes the engine and most hydraulic components. When open, the enclosure roof serves as a safe, spacious and convenient work platform.
harvester can be equipped with several Tigercat boom and harvesting head options including the 573 and 575. The feller buncher is well suited to the 5702 and 570226 felling saws and 5185 fixed felling saw. SP

A Visit To Hydrema
When I was in the process of making my plans for the Bauma tradeshow in Munich, I was having lunch with my friend Allen Patterson from Hydrema, and he suggested that I incorporate a trip to the Hydrema factory as part of my journey. He was planning to host a small group and hoped I could join in. Never being one to decline a good time, it was set. After a day trip to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart earlier in the day, I made my way via the Autobahn to Weimar Germany. We stayed at the Hotel Kaiserin Augusta right in the heart of the city. A quick online search will lead you to the Wikipedia page describing Weimar’s rich history in music, culture, politics and more. After a short and un-planned detour (AKA overshot my exit and didn’t realize it for half an hour!!) on the way up from Stuttgart, I met Allen and the guys for dinner. Mike, Randy, Lars, Darren and the 2 Stephens were already there unwinding from their long day of travel as well. We enjoyed some
laughs, some schnitzel and called it a night. We had all travelled over from Canada recently, so the time changes and our schedule the following day made it easy to call it a night early. The thing that struck me is that they seemed like a pretty tight group, even though some had only met on this trip. They have a commonality in these Hydrema products and there just seemed to be a natural fit in the personalities of the group. After a quick breakfast the next morning, we joined our tour guide Henning Andersen at the Hydrema factory, just up the street. Their building has a rich 125 year history including use in the manufacturing of railway wagons, a small amount of armoury, agricultural harvesters and over 50,000 excavators during its peak usage. Hydrema acquired the property in 1996 and uses it predominantly as the manufacturing and assembly plant for its flagship 912 and 922 articulated trucks. These trucks are used worldwide in construction,
water haulage, rail and countless other arenas. Over the course of 2.5 hours, we toured the facility, met the dedicated manufacturing and assembly crew (I had wanted to capture a few photos of the team in action, but EU privacy rules are quite strict and the publishing of “on the job” staff images is generally forbidden). I was particularly intrigued with the guys desire to see every detail of the machines. Randy, in particular, had plenty of interesting questions for our hosts, which really enhanced
the amount of information we took from the experience. I’m not a huge gear-head myself, but I have a great appreciation for those who are and it just seemed to me that the more questions the guys asked, the happier they became with the product. In each case, the group are either Hydrema dealers or customers, and their appreciation of the ingenuity and care taken by the assembly crew was not lost on any of us. It’s easy to appreciate the machine when

Our tour took us from laser cutting and fine welding through to components and parts, eventually on to
final assembly and inspection. Outside, we checked out a few of the final products, noting features on the finished trucks that were pointed out to us at the assembly level earlier in the tour.
After bidding our tour guide farewell, we stopped into the downtown area of Weimar for a traditional
lunch and a beverage. Again, I was impressed by the guys attention to detail as they continued their discussions about these amazing trucks. Like any good family, they had some good laughs (mostly at each others expense) as we
wrapped things up. After a quick solo walk through the rest of the downtown, I collected a couple of small souveniers and headed back down the Autobahn to Munich for Bauma. I was pleased to see the Hydrema booth jam-
packed each time I walked past it. Hopefully some more dealers and customers getting ready to take the leap into one of these amazing trucks.

John Deere Updates Select Forestry Equipment
John Deere introduces new operator assistance features and enhancements on its 900 M-Series Tracked Feller Bunchers, 900 MH-Series Tracked Harvesters and 900 ML-Series Shovel Loggers.
With a focus on customer productivity, the updates include an enhanced Dedicated Travel System, which has been updated for greater efficiency and is now a new feature on the 900 M-Series machines. Additionally, the new Return-to-Level functionality and further undercarriage improvements help to enhance durability. These operator assistance feature updates help improve the overall customer experience in variable operational applications.
“These performance and functionality enhancements are driven by ongoing customer feedback, which we continuously integrate into our machines,” said Jim O’Halloran, global product marketing manager at John Deere. “The updated operator features and improvements on our 900 Series models empower operators to maximize
efficiency with simplified functionality, for exceptional productivity.”
The Dedicated Travel System isolates the travel functions from the other functions on the machine. This enables the operator to focus on the task at hand by not allowing boom and swing operations to interfere and slow down the travel functions. In addition, the power balance and availability has been optimized and can be adjusted between the upper and travel functions, allowing priority to the needed operations. Dedicated Travel is standard on the 859M, 953M, and 959M Feller Bunchers, as well as the 959ML Shovel Logger. It remains optional on 853M and 903M Feller Bunchers and 859MH and 959MH Harvesters.
The new one-touch Return-To-Level functionality
combines multiple leveling system adjustments into one push-and-hold operator input. As the machine moves to a different slope, the rotating upper can be brought to a level position (based on the parameters of the leveling system) by utilizing a simple button function on the joystick. The individual leveling control buttons will remain. This new operator assistance feature has been combined with the fieldproven John Deere Slope Monitoring system, which actively measures and displays the slope of the terrain to the operator. These two advanced features allow the operator to focus more on the application machine adjustments. They are available as the new Slope Management System, which is available as an optional upgrade on all John Deere 800

No Bull About Boyko
This article originally appeared 50 years ago, in the September 30, 1975 issue of Supply Post newspaper.
The real bull of the Canadian woods is no 300-pound logger — in fact, he’s an introspective welterweight who stands a lot less than six feet tall and tips the scales at a lean 150 pounds.
Soft-spoken Alan Boyko is a bridgebuilder during the week at MacMillan Bloedel’s Taylor logging division on Vancouver Island. On the weekends, he’s the world champion in two logging sports and the Canadian titleholder in a fistful of others. He’s won so many championships in 10 years of competitive logging events that he’s lost track of some of them.
Boyko may not be a towering giant, but he packs a wallop that would break Paul Bunyan’s knee-cap. He shakes hands like a freight train coupler and the tattoo on his right forearm has grown from garter snake to python proportions thanks to a musclebuilding program that has turned his arms into tanned pistons.
Born and raised in Port Alberni, Boyko is a thoughtful, quiet man who collects antique bottles and putters around a basement cluttered with tools and a pinball machine, making coffee tables from log burls for family and friends. But put him on his favorite battlefield, a logging sports park, and he turns into a true “bull of the woods” — loggers’ slang for top hand — and possibly the best all-around competitive logger this country has ever produced.
Size, he insists, is not substitute for skill. Boyko is one of the smallest but most successful competitors on the Canadian Loggers Sports
Association’s 13-meet British Columbia circuit, which covers Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and Fraser Valley.
“I’ve been in quite a number of logging sports events where there are guys a lot bigger than I am, over six feet and 200 pounds or more,” said the 40-year-old bridgeman, a regular on the circuit since 1965.
“If you can get mean enough and you’re skilled enough, a smaller man can come out on top.”
The Boyko success formula is a spartan regimen of constant exercise and daily practice that covers the full range of the 25-odd events comprising a typical loggers’ sports day in any one of the dozen towns during the season, which runs May through October. These include such activities as bucking, falling, chopping and sawing timber, chokersetting, axe-throwing, and log-rolling.
Boyko specializes in two events that involve strength and dexterity with steel cables used in actual logging operations — eye splicing and the Molly Hogan race. He’s the recognized world champion in both categories and utilizes skills he acquired on the job since joining MB at Franklin River in 1952 at 16 years of age.
“In eye splicing, you take a piece of three-quartersinch cable and form a loop by weaving the strands together,” Boyko explained. “In a logging camp you use an eye-spliced loop to pull the rigging back out of the bush.”
He said the Molly Hogan race consists of joining two pieces of cable together by looping a nine-foot-long chunk of line between the ends — a grueling task that gets even tougher in competitive circumstances. “We call it the poor man’s shackle.”
Boyko’s entire family is involved in logging sports. His wife Jean regularly competes in women’s events such as nail-driving, crosscut sawing, and axe-throwing. A 13-yearold son, Mike, specializes in novice-class activities that include log-rolling, chopping, and axe-throwing, and an

mish, Terrace, or Quesnel.
11-year-old daughter, Janice, is also involved in log-rolling. A seven-year-old daughter is being held in reserve for future competition.
At their home in Port Alberni, the Boykos have assembled a solid wall of trophies, medallions, and commemorative sashes collected at logging sports days in B.C., Ontario, Oregon, Ohio, and even the Australian states of Tasmania and Victoria. So many, in fact, that Boyko doesn’t know how many.
“Well, there were 80 of
In addition to following the West Coast tour, Boyko strays occasionally into the southern and northern interior circuits and is a regular participant in special events. Two years ago, he toured Australia as a member of a 12man Canadian chopping and sawing team, and this year he spent three weeks at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.
On just about any summer weekend the Boykos can be found bouncing down the highway in a dusty camper loaded with axes, long-bladed crosscut saws, and gasolinepowered chainsaws, heading for a sports day at towns like Port Hardy, Woss Lake, Squa-
“When I go to a loggers’ meet, I’m after the all-around loggers’ title, which goes to the guy with the most points from all events,” he said. “If there’s 11 or 12 events on the program, I’ll enter eight or none. It’s the challenge of going against the best people in my profession — and I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a fair number of all-around logger titles in the past few years.”
Boyko said the prize money is of little consequence to him, which is lucky, since first prize in a single event rarely exceeds $200 and generally there’s 40 to 50 loggers entered.
One of the highlights of Boyko’s adventures in logging sports came when he was a member of the Canadian team that toured Tasmania in 1973 and early 1974. According to Boyko, the standing block chop is a national passion in Tasmania, rivalled only by that other great Australian pastime, beer-guzzling.
For the Canadians the competition was awesome. Boyko recalled finding himself in one town chopping against a pair of 70-year-old Tasmanians dressed in white slacks and sneakers. Under the Australians’ complicated
“If you follow the circuit consistently like I do, you’re lucky if you break even on your expenses. At most shows you can win your gas money and that’s about all. It’s the competition and the fellowship of the people that follow the sport that I really enjoy.”

New Mini Brush Cutters From Diamond Mowers
Modeled after Diamond’s industry-leading Brush Cutter Pro X, the Mini Brush Cutter Pro X is engineered to provide stand-on users – from farmers and construction contractors to landscapers and land management professionals – with another tool for their equipment toolbox.
This versatile attachment transforms a stand-on or stand-behind track loader into a powerful land-clearing tool that tackles trees, cuts through dense brush, and grinds stumps to groundlevel, empowering operators to take on a broader range of tasks and jobs.
“This attachment is engineered specifically for the mini skid steer market and adds a new dimension of capability that empowers operators to clear land faster, reduce manual labor, and maximize their equipment investment,” explained Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management at Diamond Mowers. “It packs all the power and performance of our Brush Cutter Pro X in a streamlined profile designed for those who value relentless durability and optimal versatility.”
The Mini Brush Cutter Pro X features a spindledriven blade system with 25% more cutting capacity than standard models, enabling operators to slice
through dense brush, thick vegetation, and trees up to 5” in diameter with ease.
The 42” cutting width is ideal for tackling everything from landscaping and property reclamation to urban lot clearing and maintaining parks, trails, and forest preserves. The direct-drive spindle also delivers smooth and efficient power from the motor to the blades for consistent cutting performance so operators can handle tough materials without compromising on precision.
“The spindle system replaces the more traditional gearbox, which can be prone to wear and tear under heavy loads,” noted Cleveringa. “This design reduces mechanical complexity, resulting in greater durability during heavy duty operations.”
The commercial-grade steel construction of the Mini Pro X is 25% thicker than most competitive models for enhanced durability. Furthermore, the offset design of the bolt-on attachment plate allows operators
to shift the plate across the front of their carriers to minimize track marks that would normally be left behind. This is particularly useful for precision tasks such as trail clearing or vegetation management near sensitive areas and affords greater flexibility when maneuvering in tight spaces and working near edges, fences, or other obstacles.
“This new attachment is more robust and reliable than anything else on the market,” added Cleveringa. “It replaces manual clearing and empowers operators to tackle a wide range of tasks efficiently and reliably without needing to call in additional trades. This versatility leads to greater productivity and profitability.”
To help protect operators and ensure long-term usability, the Mini Brush Cutter Pro X also features:
• Universal Safety Guarding – To minimize the risk of injury while working in challenging environments, polycarbonate safety glass shields operators from flying debris and other potential hazards during operation.
• Hydraulic Hose Protection – Hoses are enclosed in a thin spiral wrap, offering superior safeguarding, an enhanced level of durability, and resistance to wear and tear.
• Castle Nut Fasteners –Providing an added layer of protection, the castle nut system locks cutting blades in place and positions them closest to the ground during operation. Under significant stress or impact, the secure fit reduces vibrations and ensures that, in the event of a blade compromise, failure is isolated to the blade and the attachment continues to operate safely.
“Reliability and performance are crucial for professionals working in challenging environments and were top priorities in the design of this attachment,” said Cleveringa. “Field testing has shown that the spindledriven double blades and castle nut system perform well in rigorous conditions. The design handles heavy workloads and minimizes
by reducing the frequency of maintenance and repairs.”

PEI Receives Final Report From Forestry Commission
The final report of the Forestry Commission suggests the future health and resilience of Island forests will depend on striking a better balance.
The report, Towards a New Forest Policy, contains 14 recommendations put forward by the thirteen members of the commission who represent the forest industry, environmental groups, forestry professionals, and watershed associations. It begins by outlining a framework for new forestry legislation.
“I’m pleased that the commission was able to balance multiple perspectives to
come up with recommendations that aim to protect the future health of our forests, and I thank the members of the Forestry Commission for their service and dedication,” said Environment, Energy and Climate Action Minister Gilles Arsenault.
“Our department acknowledges the recommendations, has begun implementation of some, and will prioritize the creation of new forest legislation and policy for the province.”
The recommendations made by the Forestry Commission address several areas where progress has already been made or is planned, including:
Maintaining Forest Area
A Long-term Expanded Riparian Buffer Incentive has been created which allows landowners to place a conservation agreement on land within 50 meters of a
watercourse. This prevents the area from being developed or farmed for at least 20 years, and landowners get a one-time payment for farmland or forested land.
A new land conservation option for private landowners has been created under the Wildlife Management Area regulations, enabling lands under a conservation agreement to qualify for provincial property tax relief.
Preserving Natural Forest Environment, Energy and Climate Action continues to actively protect land under the Natural Areas Protection Act, adding more than 1,300 hectares (over 3,200 acres) of forest on public and private land since April 2023.
understanding the needs and challenges of the sector.
The commission’s final report underlines the need for the province to recognize
SARATOGA VENTURES LTD.
Seedling Production
The ‘hardwood gap’ of 20,000 seedlings identified by the commission’s interim report has been addressed. Also, the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery is on track to further increase the number of hardwoods produced, in response to the recommendation in the commission’s final report.
Encouraging Better Private Woodlot Management
The province invested an additional $400,000 in the Forest Enhancement Program in 2024/25, an increase of 45 per cent. The commission’s final report recommends changes to the program, including a significant increase in funding.
Managing Public Forests
The province continues to add to its forest land holdings through outright purchase.
Woodlot Owner Organization
Environment, Energy and Climate Action supported the PEI Woodlot Owners Association with a grant of $50,000 this year.
The commission’s final report recommends that future funding agreements be long term and be covered by memoranda of understanding outlining the responsibilities of all parties.
Forest Industry Support
Environment, Energy and Climate Action completed the PEI Forest Industry Capacity report this year, as a first step towards better
the important role that industry will play in reshaping our forests and in achieving the social, environmental, and economic objectives outlined in the new forest policy.
“On behalf of the members of the Forestry Commission with whom it has been my privilege to serve, I extend
my sincere appreciation to individuals and organizations that offered written submissions, and to the many woodlot owners and forest industry representatives who took the time to share their thoughts with us,” said Jean-Paul Arsenault, Chair of the Forestry Commission. “Arriving at our conclusions and recommendations required much research, reflection, consultation, and compromise. We believe we have conducted a thorough review of the matters put before us and have come up with reasonable and achievable recommendations that are consistent with the challenges ahead.”

handicap system, the pair of pensioners started chopping their blocks ahead of Boyko — and they both beat him.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he laughed. “Here’s these two old duffers whacking away with their axes, chips flying. And they didn’t miss a single hit. They both made their cuts as clean as a whistle.”
Boyko said the Canadians did a lot better against the Australians in the sawing competition.
“One of the reasons we had trouble with the chopping was that they use a lot of eucalyptus down there, a very glassy wood, and we didn’t have axes that would cut it properly.”
Having just turned 40, Boyko cites the two Tasmanians as proof that he’s got a few good years of competition left in him yet. He gleefully recalled how, at a recent sports day in Port Hardy, he was waiting for a chokerman’s race to start, lined up next to two burly young loggers.
“One of the young guys turned to the other and said, ‘What’s that old jerk think he’s doing in a race like this?’ Well, I didn’t think I was all that old, and what they didn’t know was that I’d won the race at Port Hardy the two
preceding years.”
Boyko set his choker and shot across the finish line like a startled antelope for his third win in a row while the two amazed youngsters were still fumbling with their cables.
Another of Boyko’s fondest recollections is the time he was asked to demonstrate the axe-throwing for the Queen during a royal tour stop here several years ago.
“The Queen’s security people checked me, checked my axe and asked me how far I could throw it. Once they figured she was out of range, they let me go ahead. By that time, I was so nervous that I threw it straight into the leg of the frame supporting the target and nearly knocked it over. I missed the target completely and I was really redfaced.”
“A little later the Queen asked me if I was nervous. All I could say was, ‘Darn right I was nervous — your Majesty.”
Boyko uses a conventional double-edged swamping axe for throwing and a single-edged axe for chopping events. He has a selection of about 10 chopping axes, most of them imported from Australia, and will spend up to two months grinding a new tool in his spare time to get it
ready for competition.
“A good axe costs $150 to $175, one that cuts right down to the handle and doesn’t stick with good penetration of three to four inches a hit,” said the logger. “An 11-inchdiameter log in B.C, takes eight hits on the front, six hits on the back if it goes right.”
Boyko maintains a stiff training schedule. He chops about 200 standing blocks of wood a year at home, producing so much kindling that he recently bought a Franklin stove and installed it in his basement to burn off the splinters.
Although many of the events in logging sports represent logging techniques of a bygone era, Boyko gets to use two of the early tools of the trade fairly frequently in his job as an MB bridgeman.
“Building bridges can be very demanding physically and also requires a lot of concentration and skill in the use of tools. In other words, it’s the ideal job for someone interested in logging sports.”
Even when it came to building a home a few years ago, Boyko turned that into exercise and practice. He built his entire house himself, cutting everything by hand including all the dimension lumber, without using a single power tool.
BC Wildfire Service Has Record Application Numbers Ahead Of Wildfire Season
B.C. is ramping up wildfire preparedness for 2025 by welcoming back experienced wildland firefighters and training a new wave of recruits, following a record number of applicants.
Since October 2024, the BC Wildfire Service received more than 2,200 applications, the highest recorded number of applications ever received. This includes 578 in January alone, the largest number ever received in a single month.
“The heart of our wildfire efforts is hands down the brave members of the BC Wildfire Service,” said Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests. “I’m proud of everyone who put their name forward to join our team and grateful to all the wildland firefighters who continue to keep us safe year after year.”
Touring the Thompson Okanagan in March, Parmar met with BC Wildfire Service staff at the Merritt Fire Zone training facility.
B.C. continues work to keep communities safe by
focusing on all four pillars of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. As part of these efforts, a series of enhancements were made in 2024 to strengthen pathways for participation in wildfire response, specifically for applicants in rural and remote communities.
“Wildfire prevention is about more than stopping new fires – it’s about working together with our partners and communities to reduce wildfire risk,” Parmar said. “The BC Wildfire Service has already had a busy start to 2025, supporting our neighbours in California as they dealt with devastating wildfires. This was an invaluable opportunity to collaborate on our shared work and prepare for our own
“It didn’t make any sense to hire somebody else to do it when I knew I could do it myself,” he shrugged.
Boyko said that when
he retires, “Mike will get all my axes, and judging from his progress so far, he’ll really know how to use them.”
“When that day comes, I get to sit in the pub with the rest of the old-timers and brag about how great I used to be,” he laughed. SP
wildfire season in B.C.”
A dedicated training and recruitment model for First Nations communities is expanding this spring, with sessions that build local capacity, strengthen relationships between the local First Nation and fire centre, improve wildfire response, and address needs heard from communities. First Nations bootcamps began in April 2025 in several fire centres, along with new-recruit bootcamps at the Merritt training facility. Upon completion, successful candidates will be offered positions on crews around the province.
Facts about BC Wildfire Service’s recruitment
In previous years, BC Wildfire Service’s applications were accepted in De-
cember and January.
This period was extended to October through February in advance of the 2024 wildfire season.
Every year, there are typically approximately 200 openings for crew member positions in locations around the province.
The BC Wildfire Service is a year-round agency which
engages with local contractors, local governments, First Nations and international partners throughout the winter to ensure resources are available before the start of the wildfire season.
This includes:
• securing equipment and aircraft contracts;
• continuing to implement new technologies and in-
novation;
• focusing on prevention; and
• engaging with local partners, including communities and local equipment operators, to ensure everyone is prepared for wildfire season. SP

McCloskey International Celebrates 40 Years
McCloskey International marks a significant milestone this year, celebrating 40 years of excellence in material processing.
From its humble beginnings to becoming an established and trusted strategic partner for dealers and customers worldwide, McCloskey’s legacy is built on entrepreneurial drive, innovation, and an unparalleled commitment to customer success.
McCloskey’s story began in the early 1980s when Paschal McCloskey emigrated from Northern Ireland to Canada. It was a challenging time to start a career, with businesses struggling through a deep recession.
Paschal began working in conveyor manufacturing, this is where he saw an opportunity in the market and began to produce his own line of Trommels. This innovative move not only launched McCloskey but also laid the foundations for a customerdriven, solutions-focused business, built to empower and support strategic entrepreneurs just like himself. The commitment to innovation and new partnerships would go on to transform the mobile screening and crushing industry.
Darren McKnight, Vice President of McCloskey International, believes this entrepreneurial mindset continues to define the company today, “McCloskey was built on an entrepreneurial spirit, and that’s what continues to drive us. Our customers and dealers share that same ambition, and they expect us to be innovative, adaptable, and always ahead of the curve.”
McCloskey’s first line of trommels in the late 1980s drove steady growth, and by the early 2000s onwards, the company had expanded its
manufacturing operations to Northern Ireland, Canada, and Wisconsin. In Northern Ireland, the factory known as Granville, is currently undergoing an impressive extension in order to continue to meet the demand for McCloskey machines, with the build expected to be completed later this year.
McKnight emphasizes that McCloskey’s success isn’t just measured by its global footprint, but by the strength of its people and partnerships:
“For McCloskey, our biggest achievement has been sustained growth. We’ve continuously invested in our infrastructure, our systems, and, most importantly, our people. We’ve built an industry-leading team here at McCloskey who are heavily invested in the growth of the company and are deeply loyal to our brand. But perhaps one of our greatest achievements has been the partnerships we’ve formed – not just with our dealers but with our customers, ensuring we are a true strategic partner in their success.”
Today, the company offers a complete range of mobile solutions, including Crushers, Screeners, Stackers, and Trommels, delivering topquality machinery tailored to real-world applications.
The material processing industry has transformed significantly over the past four decades, with increased consolidation, regulatory shifts, and a growing emphasis on sustainability and recycling. Through this, McCloskey has remained dynamic, evolving its product offerings and strengthening dealer support
to help customers navigate these changing demands. However, while the industry has changed, McCloskey’s remained consistent in their commitment to delivering the quality, reliability, and practicality that customers expect.
“Our industry is always evolving,” McKnight explains. “Expectations around quality and technology keep rising. Legislative changes, sustainability demands, and industry shifts, such as increased mergers and acquisitions, continue to shape how we do business. But through it all, we’ve stayed close to our customers, listening to their challenges and ensuring we remain agile. That’s why our dealer network and strategic partnerships matter now more than ever.”
McCloskey’s partnerships with dealers and customers worldwide play a crucial role in shaping its product development. By fostering these close relationships, McCloskey ensures that its equipment delivers not just raw power, but intelligent, adaptable solutions that support customers and help them stay ahead.
“Our customers don’t just need a high-quality, reliable product,” McKnight says. “They need strategic support and a true partnership. This is what we do, and this is what we see as our strength, setting us apart from the competition.”
As McCloskey looks to the future, the company remains committed to strengthening partnerships with dealers and customers, expanding its global reach, and setting new benchmarks in material processing excellence.
McKnight sees this customer-first approach as central to McCloskey’s long-term vision, “Over the next decade, we see ourselves staying even closer to our customers and dealers, using their frontline insights to drive greater innovation in our product design. Our goal is to build even stronger relationships and become the strategic partner of choice for our industry.”
With a strong foundation and a clear vision, McCloskey is poised for continued success, staying true to its brand promise of being the trusted strategic partner in material processing. SP

Seaspan Begins Construction On Heavy Polar Icebreaker
Seaspan Shipyards has announced it has officially cut steel on the Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) new heavy polar icebreaker, signifying the start of construction on one of the most advanced conventional polar icebreakers ever to be built.
This marks the first time a heavy polar icebreaker has been built in Canada in more than 60 years, and it will play a critical role in protecting our sovereignty for decades to come.
Measuring 158 metres long and 28 metres wide, Seaspan’s polar icebreaker will be incredibly complex, designed to operate self-sufficiently in the high-Arctic year-round. It will play a critical role in enabling the Canadian Coast Guard to transit and operate on more than 162,000 km of Arctic coastline.
“Today’s milestone caps off an incredibly busy 10-month period for Seaspan, involving two firstof-class ship launches and the start of construction on this new world-class polar icebreaker,” stated John McCarthy, CEO, Seaspan Shipyards. “The National Shipbuilding Strategy is showing
that a made-in-Canada approach is not only possible, it is imperative to Canada’s security and sovereignty. We must continue to design and build ships here at home, to ensure that the experience, skills, and knowledge built through the NSS will be sustained. Seaspan looks forward to delivering this new polar icebreaker to the Canadian Coast Guard, and to building more Polar Class vessels for Canada and its allies.”
The capabilities of this Polar Class 2 icebreaker will help sustain a 12-month presence in Canada’s North in support of Canada’s Arctic sovereignty, high-Arctic science (including climate change research), Indigenous Peoples and other northern communities, and the ability to respond to major maritime emergencies including search and rescue. It will be able to
accommodate up to 100 personnel, and, as one of the only Polar Class 2 vessels in the world, will be able to operate farther north, in more difficult ice conditions and for longer periods than any icebreaker in Canada to date.
This built-in-Canada ship will be the seventh vessel designed and built by Seaspan under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). It will also be the fifth Polar Class vessel to be built for the CCG, and one of up to 21 icebreaking vessels overall that Seaspan is constructing.
In January 2024, Seaspan completed construction of a polar Prototype Block to ensure preparedness to build this highly-advanced vessel, which requires steel that is twice as thick in some areas, while also being less malleable, as the steel Seaspan has used for the other ships built under the National Ship-

building Strategy.
As the only shipyard currently building polar icebreakers in Canada, Seaspan looks forward to supporting the Canadian Coast Guard by building this large, multimission vessel, and through the design and construction of any vessels Canada and its ICE Pact partners need now, or in the future.
Seaspan has already gained significant experience designing and building Polar Class vessels including three

The new equipment has been designed for the disposal of “improvised” ordnance, known as IED. When configured with the telescopic arm and fitted with the manipulator grapple, the PT300 D:MINE can search the area under investigation using a specially designed camera system. It also allows objects which may contain ordnance, or the ordnance itself, to be moved in complete safety. If equipped with an excavating bucket, the front arm can be used to inspect the ground
The new multipurpose arm boasts some impressive technical features. It is able to move to the front and sides in the classic excavator style but is also able to rotate its bucket or grapple along its axis using a 360° rotation system. This system allows for quick and accurate positioning and manipulation of material in the work area. The camera system, which consists of fixed or motorized units with a zoom function, gives remote operators an overview of the environment they are working in and a clear view of the equipment’s activities. The PT300 D:MINE is a special vehicle designed to withstand the most extreme forces. It is used all over the world for mine clearing, and it is effective against anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, even in the toughest working conditions. This FAE vehicle is the gold standard of its category, tested and certified to meet CWA 15044:2009, the international demining standard. The PT-300 D:MINE stands out for its versatility. It can be equipped with a demining head or another type of FAE attachment, like a forestry mulcher, tiller, stump cutter, or dozer blade.
These innovations make the FAE PT300 D:MINE a reliable and complete solution for government agencies, the military, NGOs, and other organizations operating in active war zones around the world. It is an increasingly effective and efficient product for reclaiming and restoring otherwise dangerous and unusable land for public use. SP

Cat Introduces New 775 Off-Highway Truck
Caterpillar Inc. recently showcased the new Cat 775 offhighway truck at bauma Munich 2025, spotlighting the company’s ongoing leadership in technology and autonomous capabilities.
The machine is the first next generation design of offhighway trucks for the company. Distinguishing it from the previous 775 models, this 65-tonne (71-ton) payload hauler is engineered to enable fully autonomous capabilities in the future.
“The design of the Next Gen 775 represents a significant leap forward in offhighway truck technology, offering unmatched power, efficiency and safety features,” says Tony Fassino, group president of Caterpillar Construction Industries. “Visitors at bauma will see our full range of technology offerings, from remote control to semiautonomous to the future of autonomous machines in construction.”
Caterpillar is leveraging its current Autonomous Hauling Systems (AHS), Cat MineStar Command for hauling, already at work at mine sites throughout the world, and scaling the system’s processes and technology to meet the specific needs for quarry operations.
“We are using the lessons learned from working with our US-based customer, Luck Stone, where we have MineStar Command for hauling installed on four Cat 777 trucks,” Denise Johnson, group president of Caterpillar Resource Industries. “The shift to the aggregate industry, where we are automating fewer trucks that don’t haul material 24 hours a day, is helping transform our technology and processes to manage smaller operations.”
The Cat 775 next generation truck has a planned introduction in 2026. Autonomous capabilities with MineStar Command for hauling are currently under development, and a release date will be announced at a later date.
Productivity
The 775 features an innovative new frame design that helps to optimize payload weight, a refined suspension for improved ride and handling, and advanced safety features like the 360-degree surround cameras and Cat Detect radar system to deliver superior performance and safer and more comfortable operation.
“Compared to previous models, our next generation 775 off-highway truck features an industry-first frame design that reduces empty weight delivering the potential for larger payloads and lower fuel burn. Plus, its 10% more body volume and improved turning radius helps to boost productivity and performance,” says David Holthaus, senior engineer and team lead for the Cat 775.
Performance
With more body volume, the truck’s new frame is optimized for weight distribution and structural efficiency. Compared to the 775G series truck, there is nearly 30% less welding to minimize the risk of cracks and improve frame life. Less internal welding and ease of frame repairability help lower costs to maintain the new 775 over an estimated 40,000-hour truck life.
Its redesigned suspension boasts a lower center of gravity. The 775 has shown to deliver better handling than previous designs, and an updated turning radius enhances onsite maneuverability. Improving service life, the truck experiences less bouncing on the tires and driveline, and the operator feels less vibration and energy feedback into the truck.
The truck is powered by the 615-kw (825-hp) Cat C27
engine and comes in different emissions configurations to meet different global regulations. The U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/Stage V version displayed at bauma offers better fuel efficiency than previous models, with advanced electronic powertrain controls that deliver faster cycles and reduced road maintenance. The truck’s enhanced ride and handling allow for higher speeds on curves and driving in higher gears, which directly reduces fuel consumption during the cycle.
Safety
The new cab is designed for efficiency and equipped with features to automate functions. The large windows give the operator visibility to the work area and surroundings. Automatic cab temperature controls and the Cat next generation deluxe seat is designed to help to improve operator comfort.
Its 360-degree surround cameras with object detection alerts operators to hazards within the immediate vicinity, making it easier to safely operate the new 775. Cat Detect combines radar and camera systems to automatically detect hazards within critical areas around the truck — primarily the front, rear and turning radius on each side.
Serviceability
Multiple key maintenance and service contributors have been reduced with the new truck design. The next generation of enhanced serviceability incorporates extended-interval filters with ground-level access, groundlevel lockout features and a serviceable suspension. Its design is fire suppression ready to simplify system installation.
The ability to access and analyze accurate real-time data enables faster diagnostics and enhances the ability to predict and prevent machine failure. New for the 775, remote flash and troubleshooting capabilities help to boost truck availability. Remote flash instantly provides access to the latest software updates and enables the updates to be scheduled and executed at a time that doesn’t interrupt the production schedule. Remote Troubleshoot enables the dealer to perform diagnostics remotely while the truck is still in operation. SP
Contract Logger Grows Despite Tough Times
This article first appeared in Supply Post, July/August 1984 issue.
One British Columbia logging operation that has expanded in recent years in spite of uncertain market conditions is Voyageur Contracting Ltd. This firm produced approximately 212,250 m3 last year, working in stands north of Prince George.
Ray Rancourt, principal owner of Voyageur Contracting, started logging in the 1960s, first as a trucker and then as a phase contractor. He gradually developed the business from there into today’s full phase logging operation.
Early in the 1970s, Rancourt purchased his first Caterpillar D6C tractor and today has 12 Caterpillar units and two Cat-powered logging trucks. His equipment consists of a D8K, D7G, 235 tree harvester with Dika head, 225/235 tree harvester with Kockums saw head, three Cat skidders (528 with Esco grapple and two 518 line machines), 966D, 966C, 14G motor grader, two 3406 powered logging trucks, JCB backhoe loader and other equipment.
Two of the newest pieces of equipment, seen working near Muskeg Camp, 97 km (60 mi) north of Prince George, included the 528 grapple skidder, and 225/235 tree harvester with a Kockums head.
Dale Edwards, operator of the 225/235, reports normal production for his unit is about 100 trees per hour. The trees range in size from
30.5 to 60 cm (12 to 24 in) in diameter. The 225 is equipped with the 4.42 m (14.5 ft) long undercarriage.
The 225/235’s special log-
ging arrangement also includes additional guarding and extra hydraulic circuits.
The Dika saw on the 235 is capable of cutting trees up to
76 cm (30 in) in diameter.
The 528, a skidder increasing in popularity in the Prince George area, developed 175 hp and has an unloaded op-
erating weight of 15,422 kg (34,000 lb). With the Esco grapple, it can yard up to 10 logs averaging 60 cm (24 in) diameter in one pass. SP

Automated Leader-Follower Platooning On Forest Roads Test A Success
In collaboration with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, FPInnovations successfully completed a three-week demonstration of Kratos Class 8 automated trucks in leader-follower mode in Quebec.
The purpose of the trial was to assess the ability of the Kratos leader-follower platoon system to operate in a Canadian natural resources operating environment, identify its limitations, and prepare an implementation plan.
This demonstration follows the evaluation of Forterra’s Autonomous Platoon Trucks, carried out in the fall of 2023. Details of this evaluation are available on the autonomous transport webpage. The successful completion of these trials marks a significant step forward in FPInnovations’ autonomous transportation initiative.
Kratos follower-leader trucks were tested with empty and partially loaded log trailers on different types of forest roads, demonstrating the potential of autonomous technologies in real-life con-
ditions. The event also enabled transport contractors to observe this technology in action, and to gauge its future prospects for the sector. The forestry sector is often cited as one of the most dangerous industries in Canada, not least because of the risks associated with transport over logging roads. In addition to safety issues, the shortage of truck drivers represents a major challenge for the transport industry. Driver shortages have already led to plant shutdowns, and as the situation worsens, these supply chain disruptions could become more frequent.
Key results
The tests carried out with Kratos in autumn 2024 achieved several key objectives, demonstrating the robustness and adaptability of autonomous systems:
• Autonomous distance covered: over 2,000 km on Canadian roads.
• Maximum speeds achieved: up to 70 km/h on forest roads and 113 km/h on paved roads (high-speed test track).
• Follower vehicle performance: the follower truck faithfully reproduced the actions of the lead vehicle in complex situations, including lane changes, speed adjustments, variations in spacing distances and management of vehicles inserted between the leader and the follower.
• Ability to transport a variety of loads: the system demonstrated its effectiveness in transporting empty or partially loaded trailers on different routes.
• Testing in difficult conditions: the demonstration took place in extreme conditions, with heavy dust, lighting variations (day, night and twilight), rain and temperatures as low as -6°C on gravel forest roads.
This series of tests represents another step towards modernizing transportation with autonomous solutions adapted to harsh environments. SP

Mammoet Breaks Record For Heaviest Transport In Alberta
Mammoet successfully transported two Ethylene Oxide (EO) reactors from Dacro Industries to Shell Scotford in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, north of Fort Saskatchewan over the first two months of 2025.
These reactors, integral to the production of downstream petroleum products, each weigh 670 tonnes, with a diameter of approximately 8.4 meters (28 feet) and a length of only 23 meters (76 feet). The unusually short length of the reactors relative to their weight required innovative problem-solving from Mammoet’s engineering team and resulted in a unique and record-breaking situation where the total vehicle weight needed for transport was nearly double the weight of the cargo.
While the EO reactors were not as heavy as the
previous Alberta record holder for cargo weight— the 800-tonne splitter vessel moved for the IPPL Heartland project in 2019 —the equipment required to move them made them the heaviest loads ever transported on Alberta highways, at 1.76 million kilograms of total gross vehicle weight. The transport operation utilized two pull trucks and six push trucks to maneuver the specially designed frame for the reactors onto the trailers, creating a transport train length just over 140 meters (462 feet).
“The primary challenge in moving vessels of this weight
is in spreading out the load per axle on our trailers” says Curtis Barnett, Senior Operations Director at Mammoet Canada Western. “Typically vessels like this are longer, but these are shorter than average and particularly heavy. That’s why we had to have the frame engineered to balance out the weight of each vessel across the two trailers.
Mammoet’s engineering team had the frame fabricated using four P55 beams from a Mammoet gantry system, with custom-fabricated ends to securely accommodate the two reactors. The frame was then mounted on large turntables on each of the two 26-line double-wide intercombi trailers, in order to facilitate the 90-degree turn required to enter the destination site. The innovative approach and meticulous planning ensured the safe and efficient delivery of the reactors to site, setting a new benchmark for heavy haulage in Alberta. SP

Seabee Memories
I began PART TWO, THE MILITARY YEARS, by stating that I did not die in Vietnam because I had been fortunate enough to join the Seabees as a truck driver, and I stand by that statement.
If you have been reading my Supply Post articles for the past 13 months, I sincerely thank you! These articles chronicled my time spent in the US Navy Seabees while serving in Vietnam. These “in country” stories and memories, I must admit—hell, I agree with you— that many of those memories were either caused, or made much more hilarious, by the enjoyment of alcohol, mostly beer. Without the beverages, those memories would not, without a doubt, have been worth the time you spent reading them. What would I have written? “Arrived at convoy point; had to sit for five hours with nothing to do; read some and smoked cigarettes; tried to sleep in 100+ degrees temperature.”
I’m not sure why, but the group of guys I worked with, and called friends, never smoked pot, otherwise I could have sat at the convoy point in the middle of a purple haze. A lot of our guys smoked, what they claimed to be, was the best s_ _t they had ever had, and maybe it was, because many Army and Marine soldiers seemed to enjoy it themselves. I suppose drinking was good enough for us. (A very wise man once told me, “Whatever it takes to get you through!”)
To be quite honest, we probably drank so we would not be plumbedscared-to-death of being killed. If I had been drafted and had become a groundpounder, I think I could have handled actual combat, but waiting around to be shot at, or hit by mortars, or hitting land mines, just left too much to contemplate and worry-about. The beer helped, and my memories lend me all the confirmation I have ever needed to support my belief that alcohol was necessary at that time in my life. Being able to drive trucks while in Vietnam permitted me to observe quite a bit of the country’s sights and culture while driving back and forth over about one hun-
dred miles. The following observations are some of the memories I carried home:
• The South Vietnamese, other than its military members, were very gentle people, and they mostly seemed at ease and happy. I suppose the fact that their country had been at war for so long that they were indifferent to all the brutality surrounding them.
• Most younger women were quite beautiful. I suppose the hard labor the women did took a toll on their looks later in life.
• Chewing betel nuts made their teeth red. The nut is the seed of the areca palm, and it has a narcotic effect. (Could this be why they were such gentle people?)
• The coastline, especially along the mountainside was beautifully picturesque, as I looked down while traveling over the Hai Van Pass between Danang and Hue.
• All the kids were very curious of, and wanted to learn about, us Americans. They were ever present as they watched us building roads and bridges. They loved the chocolate and crackers we gave them from our C-Rations.
• The ever-present smoke caused by deriving charcoal from the burning of various types of roots. Men, and mostly women, balanced fully loaded, four-foot-tall baskets of roots on their shoulders. The shoulder harness looked like a long piece of wood with strings on both ends. The strings were attached to the baskets, and they hung down very close to the ground. I doubt that I could have carried the weight those folks did every day. Additionally, small, old women could carry more on their shoulders than most big GIs. Sometimes, we would see them with two pigs, or two wired cages full of chickens.
They didn’t have pickup trucks, so this was their mode of transporting many commodities.
• Twenty-passenger buses probably carried at least 40 to 50 people, in addition to the passengers’ kids, chickens and pigs, as the riders held onto the sides or sat on top of the buses. It was hilarious each time I passed one of these buses because most of the passengers on the outside and top smiled and waved like they were having the time of their lives. I still chuckle when I remember them.
• Daylight on the concrete wall along the Perfume River in Hue, across the river from our barge facility, as hundreds of Vietnamese, of all ages, hung their bare asses over the wall to take their morning constitutionals. Wondering, as my grandfather, Obie, would have phrased it, “How in the damned hell did the putrid and stinking Perfume River ever get its name?”
• From the same bargeunloading facility in Hue, observing a sampan, on a
tributary of the Perfume River at daylight, after a woman completes her morning’s constitutional off the leeward side, then dips a pan to draw water from the wayward side to use for fixing breakfast.
• Living on soil so porous that trucks created dust only 30 minutes after it had literally rained every single day for 40 days.
• Danang’s China Beach was the nickname for My Khe beach, having been given the name by American, English and Australian soldiers during their relaxation time in Danang, as they swam and surfed. Ironically, the beach was also the site of the first U.S. troops landing in Vietnam in 1965. Although I was not yet in the Seabees. I am proud to say that the battalion I was in also landed with the Marines on China Beach.
• The thump, thump, thump, thump was loud as B-52s dropped their bombs along the Ho Chi Minh trail in the A Shau Valley 20 miles west of our camp.
• The unmistakable sound of the whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, as the 16-inch shells fired from the USS New Jersey went flying over Danang headed for the A Shau Valley.
• Holding open the screen door of our chow hall for a heavily laden Army soldier to enter. Damn! It wasn’t just any Army dude. It was a friend and neighbor who grew up half a mile from me, although we were both now 13,000 miles away from home.
• The heat took a long time to get used to, especially when trying to sleep while sweating. Many of us purchased fans for our hooch’s, but they were not very effective because our bunks were enclosed in mosquito netting. Conversely, the winter temperature never went below 50F, but we were
still cold, having been used to 100+F.
• The beer girls were always smiling and happy, as they knew a lot about customer service at their young ages.
• I tried to write home every couple of weeks, and I usually included a photograph in each envelope. My dad eventually replied with a request to send “your mother” some pictures without a beer can in my hand. SP
