Vermeer Launches New MTR516 Microtrencher Attachment

Vermeer has introduced the new MTR516 microtrencher for efficient fiber , compatible with RTX550/RTX750.

The new Vermeer MTR516 microtrencher attachment is built for contractors who need to install fiber optics efficiently with less restoration work. It cuts trenches up to 17 in (43.2 cm) deep, and the MTR516 microtrencher helps crews quickly connect neighborhoods to high-speed internet, especially

in urban areas by helping to reduce impact on surrounding property and infrastructure.

The MTR516 microtrencher works with Vermeer RTX550 and RTX750 ride-on tractors. Its design focuses on a clean, precise cut while reducing impact on surrounding property.

“Contractors need to get fiber in the ground fast and keep the jobsite clean, and the MTR516 microtrencher is built for that,” said Nick Olsen, product manager at Vermeer. “We’ve packed it with features that directly impact cutting performance and jobsite cleanliness, all

backed by the reliable service and support our customers expect from their local Vermeer dealer.”

The MTR516 microtrencher attachment features a fully shrouded cutting wheel that covers the blade during operation, contains debris and optimizes vacuum suction. This keeps the jobsite cleaner and helps cut down on cleanup time. The attachment’s durability is also key for consistent performance.

“We leveraged our experience with rockwheel durability when designing the MTR516 microtrencher,” added Olsen. “Contractors need equipment that can handle tough conditions day after day. By incorporating principles from our rockwheel designs, we built this attachment to offer enhanced durability and maintain cutting performance, even in challenging ground like cobble.”

Serviceability is straightforward to help maximize uptime. The MTR516 microtrencher has a replaceable spoil outlet for 4-in or 6-in (10.2-cm or 15.2cm) vac hoses that can be swapped out in the field. Multiple bolt-in wear plates are field-serviceable, and a dual-hinged access panel gives unhindered access for blade servicing and replacement. These design choices help reduce trips to the shop and keep crews working.

For cutting versatility, the MTR516 microtrencher handles trenches from 1 in to 2 in (2.5 cm to 5 cm) wide and down to 17 in (43.2 cm) deep. Contractors can choose wheel options with welded polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) teeth for fast, clean cuts in asphalt or rotary carbide teeth that are effective in concrete and rock. The attachment can also be offset up to 24 in (61 cm) to the right, making it easier to cut next to curbs. Operation is made simpler with features like singlelever depth control. The design also optimizes airflow for spoil discharge across all cutting depths, meaning less spoil left behind.

For contractors expanding fiber optic networks, the MTR516 microtrencher attachment is a practical tool. It cuts a narrow, shallow trench, which means less cutting and less backfill. SP

Potain Tower Cranes Support $3B Skytrain Project In BC

Five Potain tower cranes have been instrumental in the construction of the Broadway Subway Project; a transformative $3-billion infrastructure initiative that extends the reach of the SkyTrain service in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The fleet includes one MDT 389 L16 and four MDT 219 J10s, and they are supporting the building of new subway stations and other key infrastructure elements along the route.

The 5.7-kilometer (3.5mile) extension of the Millennium Line promises fast, frequent, and convenient SkyTrain service to important destinations, including British Columbia’s second-largest job market, major healthcare facilities, an emerging innovation hub, and residential communities. It’s set to open in 2027 and will feature six new underground stations along the Broadway Corridor.

“The cranes’ performance have exceeded expectations, providing the contractor with the confidence and reliability required for a high-visibility project of this magnitude,”

said Pavel Jamro, Business Development Manager at Cropac Equipment. “The project has reinforced Potain’s reputation for solid performance in critical infrastructure projects.”

J10 is a medium-sized crane that excels in urban lifting and has a 10 t capacity with a 65 m maximum radius.

CCS (Crane Control System) has enabled ease of use and familiarity for operators, even for complex multicrane installations. Assembly, erection, transport, and maintenance phases are all optimized for productivity.

Both tower crane models are topless, enabling a variety of setups along the corridor. The MDT 389 L16 is a high-capacity crane with a 16t capacity and a 75 m maximum radius. The MDT 219

Cropac selected these cranes for their precision, durability, and efficiency. After nearly three years of continuous construction, they have delivered exceptional performance, with almost no downtime. Their seamless operation has been supported by Cropac Equipment’s dedicated service team, ensuring uninterrupted progress on the project. SP

Four New Mini Excavators From CASE

CASE Construction Equipment is launching four new mini excavator models that are easy to transport, simple to use and packed with features to give crews more flexibility on smaller projects and tight jobsites.

The new machines, which include three diesel-powered D series models and one EV model, offer industry-leading power and a wider range of operating weight categories to give crews versatile, rightsized solutions that can fit on a pickup truck trailer for working more efficiently in the most challenging environments.

“Labor shortages, closequarter environments, more stringent jobsite requirements — the challenges crews are up against today are more varied than ever,” said Terry Dolan, head of CNH Construction Brands, North America. “Helping crews meet the demands of the modern worksite is what drives our practical approach to innovation, and it’s why we’ve focused heav-

ily on enhancing our robust lineup of mini excavators to offer the most efficient solutions. These new models deliver big on power, but they’re also easier to transport, move around the jobsite, operate, maintain and own, compared to larger machines.”

For construction contractors, municipal crews, utility teams, landscapers and specialty contractors who need versatile tool carriers for diverse jobsite challenges, CASE is bringing simplicity, smarts and muscle to the mini excavator market. New to CASE’s lineup are the ultra-compact, 11.8-horsepower CX12D; the high-performing, 18.4-horsepower CX19D; the all-electric, 32.3 kWh CX25EV; and the heavy-du-

ty, 59.4-horsepower CX60D

— providing efficient, highly maneuverable solutions for projects like trenching, dirt moving, truck loading and site prep, as well as grading, foundation digging and land clearing.

The new D Series machines provide power that outperforms competing models in the same size class, while the new electric CX25EV offers power equal to a comparable size diesel machine. All models feature zero or minimal tail swing and intuitive controls, making them easy to operate in tight spaces. Easy-to-access service points make them simple to maintain, and with two standard auxiliary hydraulic circuits and optional quick couplers to stream -

line attachment changes, these machines offer excellent attachment versatility, letting crews expand their tool set to take on more jobs.

Cat Upgrades Medium Wheel Loaders With Collision Warning System

Next generation Cat medium wheel loaders are infused with the latest technologies to advance safety and help customers work faster and with greater accuracy.

Fully integrated for optimal performance, the wheel loaders can be easily upgraded with optional technologies as work demands it.

Caterpillar announces new technology options available for next generation Cat 950, 962, 966, 966 XE, 972, 972 XE, 980, 980 XE, 982 and 982 XE wheel loaders.

“Our new optional Collision Warning system with Motion Inhibit includes Object Detection, People Detection and Motion Inhibit as a package to improve safe operation by alerting operators and inhibiting loader motion in the instant a machine transitions from an inactive to an active state,” comments Frank Stadelmann, Caterpillar global product application special-

ist for medium wheel loaders. “The new Cat Payload for Trade* option builds on our Advanced Payload Scale system that electronically captures weight and other data from the loader, now in a certified way, and can send it to the office or directly via email.”

Operating safety

Starting with a foundation of the standard HD rear camera with an integrated touchscreen, Cat medium wheel loaders offer a progressive building block of optional technologies, including the Multiview (360°) Vision System, Rear Object Detection and now Collision Warning System with Motion Inhibit. The new system uses radar

and vision sensors to detect hazard potential, alert operators and inhibit motion when initiating reverse motion from a stationary position. Targeting collision potentials that emerge from behind the loader, the Collision Warning System leverages both smart camera and radar technology to give audible and visual alerts to help operators see, mitigate and manage hazards that might otherwise go unnoticed. The system’s three color zones – yellow for awareness, amber for caution and red for critical – approximate the distance of the object to the anticipated path of the loader.

The embedded Motion Inhibit feature prevents direct reverse gear engagement

when shifting from neutral and automatically applies the brake when the system detects an object or worker in the critical alarm zone behind the loader. When this occurs, the operator is alerted by an on-screen notification. If the loader is stationary for at least 15 seconds and the operator shifts from park to reverse, Motion Inhibit prevents the machine from engaging reverse when the rear detection system identifies something in the critical alarm zone. The loader will reverse once the operator shifts back into neutral and steers to clear the detection.

People Detection utilizes the smart camera to alert the operator when a person is detected behind the loader. Three levels of alerts dynamically adjust based on the person’s proximity to the machine, and the system highlights people in red bounding boxes on the in-cab monitor to distinguish and manage the potential risk.

Payload accuracy

Standard Cat Payload delivers precise bucket load information with on-the-go weighing to help prevent overloading or underload-

ing. Upgrading to the Advanced Payload system expands automation features and capabilities, including automatic tip-off assist for the final bucket process to help precisely meet target payloads. A new multitask mode within Advanced Payload tracks two loading processes simultaneously, while split mode allows for loading multiple bodies, tracking individual targets and tabulating grand totals of each load.

Optional Cat Advanced Payload is a system upgrade that offers expanded features and capabilities. Tip-

off assist adds automation to the final bucket process. Multitask mode tracks two loading processes simultaneously. Split mode allows for loading multiple bodies while tracking individual targets and grand totals. Add Dispatch for Loading** to integrate the loader into the scale house process.

The Cat Payload for Trade* option for Cat Advanced Payload allows you to integrate scale data directly into your business processes. It is type approved by the International Organization of Legal Metrology and

MDS M515 Redefines Rip Rap Processing In North America

MDS has seen a significant rise in demand for its M515 Heavy Duty Trommel across North America.

Renowned for its ability to produce high-quality, precisely sized rip rap material, the M515 is playing a key role in helping customers meet the need for this material, driven by an increased focus on infrastructure development, flood protection, and environmental conservation.

rap processing for their customers’ quarry operations. Areas that have seen a particular growth include Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Class A rip rap is being used for the building of a pier, and Kentucky, where quarries have been processing rip rap for shoreline projects.

process rocks as large as 2 ft 8 in (800mm), making it the ideal solution for quarries producing irregular or oversized material. The trommel has a 13 ft 1 in (4m) fines section and 4 ft 11 in (1.5m) mid-product section equipped with interchangeable screens or fully welded drums that are tailored to meet the specific needs of each application. These versatile drum configurations enable customers to receive the optimal setup for their unique requirements.

In the quarrying industry, rip rap is produced by extracting and processing rocks of varying sizes, often as a byproduct of other mining operations. Rip rap is categorized into five classes, ranging in sizes from 12-inch to 34inch rock. Each class is designed with a low percentage of fines, making it suitable for various erosion control and structural applications.

Being the flagship model in the MDS portfolio, the M515 is renowned for its ability to handle large, sticky materials thanks to its unique de-

In addition to its superior performance, the M515 has been designed for ease of use and reduced operational costs. The model features a swing-out engine for quick and hassle-free maintenance. The addition of a convenient access platform allows operators to perform service checks with minimal downtime. For transportation, the M515 engine side placement enables it to fit on smaller bed trailers, making it more cost-effective to transport.

Smaller classes are ideal for foundational support in submerged structures such as piers, while mid-range sizes are commonly used for erosion control along rivers, lakes, and embankments. The largest classes offer protection in high-impact areas, including steep slopes, shorelines, and windmill bases.

Whether it’s protecting shorelines, stabilizing riverbanks, or reinforcing structures against erosion, the need for high-quality, precisely sized rip rap material means that it is becoming an increasingly attractive market.

Powerscreen Crushing and Screening, distributor of MDS equipment across Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, has seen the M515 heavy duty trommel become a cornerstone in rip

sign and features. One of the most significant challenges in the rip rap market is the need to clean and process materials that are often contaminated with clay, dirt, or other sticky elements. Traditionally, this waste would either be discarded or require costly secondary processes. However, the M515 has an innovative rotating drum design that allows for the efficient cleaning of rocks, breaking down impurities and enabling quarries to make use of material that would otherwise be wasted.

With a large 16.5 yd³ (12.6m³) hopper that can handle up to 22 US tons (20 metric tonnes) of feed material, the M515 trommel can

Alan Coalter, President of Powerscreen Crushing and Screening emphasised the machine’s ability to tackle some of the toughest challenges in the rip rap sector. “One of the biggest advantages of the M515 is its loader feeder, which works wonders for sticky materials. In our territories, we often deal with dirty shot rock, and the trommel makes it easy to clean and reuse material that would otherwise be wasted. It helps quarries keep their operations running longer and more efficiently, which ultimately benefits our customers.”

Before adopting the M515, Powerscreen Crushing and Screening relied on scalpers, which were limited by the size of the materials they could process, as well as their stock-

pile clearance. Additionally, quarries were often relying on labour and machines to manually pick through shot rock, a time-consuming and inefficient process. The M515, however, can handle larger feed sizes, and offers higher stockpile clearance, improving both material handling and efficiency. “Customers are much happier with the results. The trommel allows us to process bigger rock more effectively, eliminate the need for manual sorting, and make better use of resources. It provides more options and significantly improves the quality of the rip rap,” Alan Coalter added.

The MDS M515 has not only improved operational efficiencies but also strengthened Powerscreen Crushing and Screening’s position in the market. “By offering the M515, we’ve been able to differentiate ourselves from competitors. It’s the best option on the market for sticky applications and large rock processing,” continued Alan Coalter. “Replacing the scalper with the M515 has proven to be more cost-effective in the long run, thanks to the reduced need for screen media

and other maintenance costs.

In our opinion, the M515 has become the main player in the rip rap sector, helping us improve our competitiveness and better meet customer needs.”

The feedback from Powerscreen Crushing and Screening customers has been positive, with many appreciating the machine’s ability to utilise previously wasted materials. Looking ahead, Powerscreen Crushing and Screening sees continued growth in the rip rap market, with the M515 playing a pivotal role in shaping that future.

“As demand for rip rap continues to rise, especially in infrastructure projects, the M515 will be crucial in helping quarries meet those demands,” said Liam Óg Murray, Regional Sales Manager, MDS. “By enabling quarries to make better use of their raw materials, improve operational efficiency, and provide higher-quality products to customers, the M515 not only sets the standard for what’s possible in rip rap processing; it is a catalyst for growth in the North American rip rap market.” SP

The A 909 Compact and the A 911 Compact are not only the first Liebherr wheeled excavators in this ton class but also impress with their compactness. They have a small rear swiveling radius

(1.50 m and 1.60 m) and front swiveling radius (2.00 m and 2.10 m). The turning circle dimensions of just 3.86 meters also underline the compactness of the two machines. The same applies to the enveloping circle. In combination with the total weight of 9.7 tonnes for the A 909 and 10.8 tons for the A 911, the two wheeled excavators can be used safely and flexibly even in confined spaces.

Customized control is required

The A 909 Compact and the A 911 Compact are equipped with the INTUSI (Intuitive User Interface) operating system, an innovative, adaptive and intuitive operating system. INTUSI organizes the various function categories thematically or situationally into apps that are reminiscent of the operation of a smartphone. This enables

the driver to continue working safely and comfortably with the growing number of functions. The new operating concept offers a high degree of individuality for the driver: the arrangement of the functions can be customized and saved in the respective driver profile. This allows higher-level functions to be stored for direct call-up. With the newly created user interface, these can be operated directly for the individually defined, prioritized functions, which provides additional convenience.

Durability

In addition to all the useful features, the small excavators also feature a wellthought-out maintenance concept. The durability of the high-quality components ensures low service costs and therefore less downtime for maintenance and servicing. Looking at the entire life cycle of the new wheeled excavators, the total costs from purchase to sale are ultimately at a low level – without compromising on quality. Many components are also maintenance-free, meaning that

no daily maintenance is required. However, if maintenance is required, the most important parts are accessible from the ground, making maintenance quick, easy and, above all, safe.

Speed

The robust and reliable undercarriage design with integrated travel drive offers the best possible acceleration due to the high tractive force. The resulting high travelling speed reduces the time required for transport. Comfort is also taken care of: The Liebherr standard tires ensure maximum stability and are available in several versions, such as twin or single tires (optional). Various so-called speeder versions for the A 909 Compact and the A 911 Compact enable speeds of up to 37km/h to be reached. SP

Big Results: Microtrenching With Guzzler MT

For the team at Day Excavation in Phoenix, Arizona, the day begins early. The crew works as early as allowed often starting their work microtrenching at 6:30 a.m. That enables them to beat temperatures as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit. With their Guzzler MT, they’re often done cutting by 10 a.m.

“Without Guzzler, we wouldn’t even be able to do this work,” said Bear Day, Co-Owner of Day Excavation LLC. “The Guzzler MT means everything to our business and what we do. You basically can’t do this work without it. You can, but it’s going to be a lot slower, a lot more cleanup and a lot more headaches.”

Bear Day, Christopher Day and Jerry Day are the co-owners of Day Excavation LLC. The brothers were working on the road for a dozen years when they decided they wanted to stay closer to home. When they first heard about microtrenching, they were intrigued and began teaching themselves about the process. They began their own company five years ago and then started microtrenching three years ago. Now their

crew has expanded to 20 people.

“We started out as landscapers…I can’t explain to anybody how hard me and my brothers have worked to get where we’re at,” said Christopher Day, Co-Owner of Day Excavation LLC. “And we just want to keep ascending and do it right. You know, even when no one’s looking. We care about people’s yards. We care about cleanup. We care about the roads. We care about the cities. Honestly, that’s our thing.”

To continue their company’s rapid growth in microtrenching, the Day brothers have relied on the Guzzler MT, a microtrenching vacuum unit that significantly speeds up fiber optic installations by swiftly cleaning trenches for the deploy-

ment of FTTH, FTTP, CCTV, smart grid, and electric networks.

“The Guzzler MT plays a crucial role in the fiber industry and the process of microtrenching by assisting the contractors and utility companies with speeding up the process through various features,” said Kevin Fulkerson, Director of Industrial Sales, Guzzler. “Simply put, the Guzzler MT will allow you to cut more feet per day, which equates to better production results for the utility companies. With increased production, crews are able to cut more feet per day. They can lay more fiber optic into the ground and reach more customers. This translates to cutting and laying more feet of fiber per day, which translates to the ability to charge

more and increase revenue.”

That increased efficiency is something the Days recognized in helping their bottom line. With the Guzzler MT, they’ve been able to cut up to 3,000 feet in one span. Christopher Day estimates they’re cutting 3,000 feet in three hours whereas with a pullbehind vac they’d be lucky to accomplish that amount in 10 hours.

“We started with the Guzzler MT, and it was the best thing that has ever happened to us,” said Christopher Day. “Honestly, it’s very efficient. It cleans our trench first try, and we don’t have to come back multiple times for the cut. It gets every piece out of where you’re sawing, and it’s just great.”

The record for the crew is 5,500 feet and 41 handholds. In a typical day, Christopher said they easily get 2,000 feet “like child’s play” and then they’re off the road by 12:30 p.m.

When it came time to decide on a machine to help the brothers in jumping into the world of microtrenching, they were originally going to use a pull-behind vac truck, but then they reached out to Guzzler. The Guzzler team had a demo out to them in just a few days.

“The Guzzler MT is, besides my crew, the second most important thing in our business,” said Christopher Day. “Honestly, back when everybody first started, they were using pull behind vacs. And before we got the Guzzler MT, you’d have to dump 15 times a day. Now we’re dumping twice tops.”

Previously taking time to dump the accumulated material necessitated trips back and forth to dump sites. With the Guzzler MT’s capacity, operators and crews can work much longer, nearly an entire day before going to the location to dump the accumulated materials.

Minimal dumping is a big deal as Bear Day noted the dumping fees in Arizona.

Christopher Day said they’d have to dump every 45 minutes if it wasn’t for their Guzzler MT.

“Whether it’s a small vac truck or a big truck, the fee is the same, so only having to dump once a day with the use of the Guzzler MT helps the company’s bottom line,” said Bear Day.

Bear noted a job in downtown Mesa, Arizona and how the Guzzler MT made the job easier thanks to not having to get in and out of a tight spot to dump multiple times. The team was able to get in and out of the congested area quickly thanks to the Guzzler MT’s quick work.

“The Guzzler MT allows you to vacuum faster than other methods because it has higher CFM (cubic feet per minute),” said Dustin Rhodes, Product Manager, Guzzler. “Therefore, it’s cleaning the channel the first time, so you don’t have to do a repeat path or multiple cuts to get the desired depth.”

Another benefit of the Guzzler MT is how quiet it is. With the team starting at 6 a.m. to beat the high temps of Arizona yet working in neighborhoods, a huge benefit is that noise reduction.

“You can barely hear the thing,” said Bear Day of the Guzzler MT. “We try to start earlier and get off as quick as possible so we’re not disrupting everyone. And if people are coming out of their houses because something is loud, then it’s going to take us longer to get it done. So having the Guzzler MT and it being quiet helps us get out of there quicker. So it’s nice.”

One of the biggest productivity features on the Guzzler MT is the creep drive. The Guzzler MT vacuums as the vehicle moves along, eliminating the need to start and stop as production moves forward. Instead of needing to go back and clean after trenching, the Guzzler MT’s filtration and baghouse enable great suction for cleaner trenches on the first go and

less impact on the air quality.

One particularly tough job for Day Excavation was a deep trench on an arterial road, which is a main road in the city. The crew had to cut 16 inches deep. The suction of the Guzzler MT enabled them to make the cut while Guzzler MT’s creep drive made it more efficient decreasing the impact on that main road. With creep drive, the truck drives and sucks at the same time. Bear Day called it “a game changer.”

“It’s priceless,” said Bear Day of the Guzzler MT’s impact on their business. “We probably wouldn’t even be doing this work and making money.”

Another feature the brothers appreciate are the cameras on the Guzzler MT, which enable Day Excavation to only have a three-person team on a job instead of four or five. The cameras’ multiple angles make it so a spotter isn’t needed.

“Honestly, the camera system in there is awesome,” said Christopher Day. “Our operator can see every cut, every turn, every reverse side view. So it’s perfect.”

Christopher also noted his appreciation for the ease of maintenance. They’ve only had to fix a couple basic things, and in those cases, Guzzler’s support team had them up and running in no time. In fact, a support person drove from Long Beach to Arizona, fixed it overnight and had it ready to work the next day.

Day Excavation has plans to grow. Those plans include expanding to two or three crews yet this year and purchasing two or three more Guzzler MTs.

“Microtrenching is the future,” said Christopher Day. “It’s shallow. You don’t risk utilities or cutting someone’s sewer that wasn’t located. There’s no dusting debris. I love it. I’m out here every day with my whole crew, and it’s just fun work.” SP

Revenue-Generating Summer Jobs For Land Contractors

Turn up the heat with five high-impact tasks to maximize profit and equipment performance.

Summer is a prime time for land-clearing professionals to take on high-paying jobs like tall grass mowing, brush removal, and invasive species control. As temperatures rise and vegetation explodes, so does demand for skilled operators who know how to clear land quickly and do it right the first time. Whether cutting grass that’s grown up to the cab, reclaiming property swallowed by brush, or helping a town prep for fire season, having the right attachments gives contractors the power to say “yes” to more jobs, generate repeat business, and grow their reputation.

Following are five revenue-generating jobs from Diamond Mowers to win this summer:

Tall Grass and Brush Cutting

From roadside mowing to pasture reclamation, tackling tall grass and dense brush are reliable moneymakers all summer long. For thorough and efficient cleanup, Diamond’s Brush Cutter Pro X clears grass, brush, and branches to keep land neat and manicured and prevent weeds from sprouting. Equipped with three steel blades and a tri-hex cutting disc, it can slice through material up to 10” in diameter. The Brush Cutter Pro delivers the same premium durability and multi-faceted cutting performance, but with specific tailoring for a broader range of carriers. Its exclusive blade carrier boasts two hardened steel blades that maintain a 72” cutting width and can handle material up to 5” in diameter.

When it’s time to move beyond brush and into larger vegetation, Diamond offers a range of drum mulchers tough enough to tackle any terrain. The Drum Mulcher Depth Control (DC) Pro is ideal for standard-duty applications like fence line maintenance and general brush clearing, providing effective cutting power on dense trees and vegetation without overkill. For heavier-duty work, the new Drum Mulcher Pro X2 is available in both open drum (OD) and depth con-

trol configurations and makes quick work of thick brush and vegetation up to 9” in diameter. The OD Pro X2 thrives in rugged environments with heavy ground engagement, while the DC Pro X2 delivers controlled, efficient mulching with a clean finish.

“Both of the Pro X2 units feature enhanced visibility, redesigned push bars, and optimized infeed systems, making them a go-to solution for high-output contractors tackling everything from overgrown pastures to explosive midsummer growth along roadways, utility easements, and much more,” said Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management at Diamond Mowers.

Fence Line Maintenance –Keep Boundaries in Check

Fences are vital for livestock, crops, and property management, making now the perfect time to trim back overgrowth and ensure clear boundaries.

“Vegetation encroaching on electric fencing can cause shorts and jeopardize livestock safety,” explained Cleveringa. “That’s why regular maintenance on fences in urban environments or across acreages of land is important for extending their life, reducing repairs, and saving on long-term costs.”

The Brush Cutter Pro simplifies this task with a low push bar that clears beneath a fence’s bottom wires to remove perennial under/ over-growth. For even thicker material, the Drum Mulcher DC Pro powers through dense trees and vegetation while controlling discharge by directing debris toward the ground, making it a perfect tool for working in urban settings and along roads or buildings.

Stay Ahead of the Spread of Invasive Species

By mid-summer, invasive species like Eastern Redcedar, Multiflora Rose, Mesquite, and Juniper are no longer sprouting – they’re sprawling. Left unchecked, these plants can choke out native growth,

disrupt ecosystems, and harm land productivity. If they weren’t nipped in the bud during spring, now’s the time to shut them down before they go to seed and spread.

“Early detection and removal are key,” said Cleveringa. “Start by trimming tall brush before using a disc or drum mulcher to grind down trunks. Then finish the job with a stump grinder to prevent regrowth.”

For operators seeking a more productive and versatile tool, the Drum Mulcher OD Pro X2 is a one-pass wonder that delivers highquality mulch thanks to its optimized infeed system. This is a great choice for when heavy ground engagement is expected and provides power and flexibility for cutting and mulching invasives down to size. The Drum Mulcher DC Pro X2 can help contractors conquer heavier duty mulching and invasive species management while delivering an equally fine mulch that not only looks clean and professional but also breaks down more quickly, aids in nutrient cycling, and can help meet specific job requirements set by state or federal land management contracts.

Storm Cleanup and Fire Mitigation

From tornadoes and flooding to hurricanes and wildfires, natural disasters can wreak havoc on the land, leaving behind downed limbs, toppled trees, and scattered debris. Having the right equipment on hand enables contractors to respond quickly and effectively.

Diamond’s excavator attachments, including the Brush Cutter Pro X and Drum Mulcher DC Pro X, excel in these scenarios. The power and precision of these tools, combined with the extended reach of an excavator, allows operators to manage debris in hard-to-access areas along steep banks, over ditches, and through heavily obstructed terrain without compromising stability or safety. This capability makes them essential tools for clearing storm-damaged vegetation in both rural

6 Unique ADT Uses Beyond Mining And Quarrying

Rugged and reliable articulated dump trucks have long been a backbone in mining, construction and quarrying, but these haulers can prove their worth in a wide array of other specialized applications, as Scottish articulated hauler manufacturer Rokbak explains.

ADTs such as the Rokbak RA30 and RA40 are built for off-road performance, steep grades and tough terrain. Haulers such as these feature regularly across projects you’d expect them – and some where you wouldn’t! Here’s a look at six unique, and perhaps unexpected, ways articulated haulers are working harder and smarter –beyond the pit.

1. Water trucks: taming dust and fighting fires

One of the most versatile adaptations of ADTs is the articulated water truck. These haulers can be used for dust suppression, site cleaning and even emergency firefighting. Equipped with water tanks and pumps, ADTs can perform on the tough terrain where traditional fire trucks may struggle. Units are able to transport water, assist in earth moving and prove a stable presence in unstable conditions. Recently, through a partnership with Hydex, Rokbak haulers have been transformed into mobile water distribution units.

2. Forestry trucks: clearing the way

In the dense and often uneven landscapes of for-

est operations, haulers fitted with logging platforms have become forestry workhorses. Their ability to traverse slippery, muddy and steep terrain makes them ideal for hauling large quantities of logs to and from remote locations. ADTs with logging racks help maintain forestry productivity even in adverse weather conditions or undeveloped sites.

3. Military logistics trucks: in

the combat zone

The robust engineering of articulated haulers makes them perfect for defense operations. Modified as military trucks, these vehicles can transport equipment, munitions or personnel across unpredictable terrain where conventional trucks would fail. Their high ground clearance and drivetrains are wellsuited for rapid deployment,

disaster response and logistical support in both combat zones and humanitarian missions.

4. Drilling rigs: foundations for infrastructure

Drilling and geotechnical projects can benefit from ADTs converted into mobile drilling platforms. When equipped with hydraulic drill arms and on-board compressors, these rigs can reach otherwise inaccessible sites – whether for mineral exploration, utility installation or foundation work. Their articulation and all-terrain capability mean operators can access tough areas without creating new access roads, minimizing environmental impact.

5. Waste disposal: keeping clean

Articulated trucks can play an essential role in waste management, especially in landfills, recycling facilities, demolition sites and waste processing plants. Nearly every landfill uses one or more ADTs for tasks like cell development, hauling soil and building haul roads. Designed for rough terrain, slopes and soft or wet ground, these trucks

landslide or wildfire aftermath, ADTs can be rapidly repurposed for emergency logistics. Their ability to transport heavy supplies, debris and water can contribute to post-disaster operations. The high articulation and ground clearance allow access to remote areas where other trucks cannot go, delivering aid or clearing paths for emergency services. Molded in Motherwell, Scotland, Rokbak’s ADTs are built to be more than dump trucks. The RA30 and RA40 platforms serve as rugged, reliable foundations for industry-specific solutions and can help redefine what’s possible on – and off – the road. SP

One of the standout features of the J-1280 is its hydrostatic drive system. Unlike direct drive alternatives, the hydrostatic setup allows the crusher to continuously operate in reverse. This functionality is critical for clearing blockages quickly and safely, without the need to manually lift material from the chamber. The ability to unblock not only improves safety by reducing the need for working at height but also minimizes downtime by eliminating the need for lock-out/tag-out procedures during unblocking.

our commitment to engineering excellence, customer feedback, and operational efficiency,” added Martin Conway. “With a focus on

safety, transport efficiency, and high-performance crushing, the Finlay J-1280 is a machine built not only to meet the demands of today’s

ity in tough conditions, it’s a go-to attachment for contractors who need to reclaim land quickly and thoroughly after nature strikes.

Additionally, tree stumps left behind after storms can obstruct new plant growth, diminish a property’s appearance, and prevent land from being repurposed for agriculture, development, or real estate. Removal can be a quick and easy process with a wheel-based stump grinder. Diamond offers two types of stump grinders – the Miller and the Reflex – both designed to grind stumps of virtually any size to below ground level thanks to their 1”-thick heavy-duty wheels, which are equipped with carbide teeth that smoothly slice through tough material and resist impact and abrasion.

Urban Development and Infrastructure Projects –Land Prep That Pays

Summer is prime time for

This flexibility allows operators to tailor the machine to their specific application needs, whether prioritizing throughput, fines removal, or feed consistency.

“This latest addition to the jaw crusher lineup reflects

townships, cities, and municipalities to address rights-ofway, trail expansions, and site prep for infrastructure. Public and private developers alike are looking for contractors who can clear land efficiently and professionally. Those equipped with the right brush cutting and mulching attachments are well-positioned to earn repeat municipal work and build long-term growth opportunities.

Featuring a spindle-driven blade system that delivers commercial-grade power, Diamond’s stand-on Mini Brush Cutter Pro X is particularly useful for precision tasks near sensitive areas, as well as general property maintenance. This compact yet power-packed tool features a bolt-on attachment plate with an offset design, so operators can shift the plate across the front of their carrier to minimize track marks.

“The Drum Mulcher OD Pro X2 is another strong fit

for urban development and infrastructure projects because it can efficiently clear thick brush and trees to make way for roads and commercial developments,” added Cleveringa. “Both the Brush Cutter Pro and Pro X deliver fast, efficient cutting, too, helping contractors control dense overgrowth and remove debris with ease.”

Summer brings no shortage of opportunities for land clearing professionals to stay productive and profitable. With the right tools in their arsenal, contractors can meet seasonal demand head-on to not only drive revenue during peak season but also open doors to long-term contracts and expanded service offerings. By investing in highperformance attachments built for summer’s toughest challenges, land clearing professionals can turn the heat into a season of growth. SP

Alberta Invests In Technology

Transforming Tailings Ponds

Alberta is investing up to $50 million from the TIER fund into new technologies to help reduce oil sands mine water and reclaim tailings ponds.

Alberta’s oil sands produce some of the most responsible energy in the world and have drastically reduced the amount of fresh water used per barrel. Yet, for decades, operators have been forced to store most of the water they use on site, leading to billions of litres now contained largely in tailings ponds.

Alberta is investing $50 million from the industryfunded TIER system to help develop new and improved technologies that make cleaning up oil sands mine water safer and more effective. Led by Emissions Reduction Alberta, the new Tailings Technology Challenge will help speed up work to safely reclaim the water in oil sands tailing ponds and eventually return the land for use by future generations.

As in other mines, the oil sands processing creates leftover water called tailings that need to be properly managed. Recently, Alberta’s Oil Sands Mine Water Steering Committee brought together industry, academics and Indigenous leaders to identify the best path forward to safely address mine water and reclaim land.

“Tailings and mine water management remain among the most significant challenges facing Alberta’s energy sector,” stated Justin Riemer, CEO, Emissions Reduction Alberta. “Through this chal-

“Alberta’s government is taking action by funding technologies that make treating oil sands water faster, effective and affordable,” announced Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “We look forward to seeing the innovative solutions that come out of this funding challenge, and once again demonstrate Alberta’s global reputation for sustainable energy development and environmental stewardship.”

lenge, we’re demonstrating our commitment to funding solutions that make water treatment and tailings remediation more affordable, scalable and effective.”

This new funding competition will support both new and improved technologies to help oil sands companies minimize freshwater use, promote responsible ways to manage mine water and reclaim mine sites. Using technology for better on-site treatment will help improve safety, reduce future clean up costs and environmental risks, and speed up the process of safely addressing mine water and restoring sites so they are ready for future use.

“Innovation has always played an instrumental role in the oil sands and continues to be an area of focus,” said Kendall Dilling, president, Pathways Alliance. “Oil sands companies are collaborating and investing to advance environmental

technologies, including many focused on mine water and tailings management. We’re excited to see this initiative, as announced today, seeking to explore technology development in an area that’s important to all Albertans.”

Quick facts

All mines produce tailings. In the oil sands, tailings describe a mixture of water, sand, clay and residual bitumen that are the byproduct of the oil extraction process.

From 2013 to 2023, oil sands mine operations reduced the amount of fresh water used per barrel by 28 per cent. Recycled water use increased by 51 per cent over that same period.

The Tailings Technology Challenge is open to oil sands operators and technology providers until Sept. 24.

The Tailings Technology Challenge will invest in scaleup, pilot, demonstration and first-of-kind commercial technologies and solutions to

reduce and manage fluid tailings and the treatment of oil sands mine water.

Eligible technologies include both engineered and natural solutions that treat tailings to improve water quality and mine process water.

Successful applicants can receive up to $15 million per project, with a minimum funding request of $1 million. SP

Thanks to simplified routine maintenance, they spend less time on prep and more time on the task at hand,” said Katie Voelliger, product marketing manager, John Deere. “We focused on the details that give our customers a competitive advantage on the jobsite.”

Designed to make jobsites more productive, the updated P-Tier Wheel Loaders feature an integrated suite of smart systems that simplify maintenance and aid in getting machines Ready to Run. With advanced on-board diagnostics, including daily fluid checks, fluid loss detection, and battery health monitoring, all easily accessible through the in-cab display, operators can manage uptime with confidence.

The John Deere exclusive QuadCool Cooling System is a highlight in durability and serviceability in the updated P-Tier Wheel Loaders. Redesigned rear hoods, grilles and cab roofs eliminate the need to climb on the machine for maintenance, while side-access planes simplify cleaning of the condenser and radiator. The newly relocated axle

cooling system is now easier to access and maintain, and a reverse fan clears debris out through the side doors, designed to minimize buildup beneath the machine. In addition, the rear door opens independently from the sides, making daily maintenance more convenient.

Inside the cab, operators will now benefit from the new, next generation primary display, a 7-inch primary touchscreen that offers a larger interface and intuitive navigation that helps to enhance operator focus and simplifies operation. This display enables a new in-base rear camera view and supports the ability to run two

applications simultaneously, including the backup camera. Also, physical buttons have been removed from the display face to improve user experience, while key machine functions remain easily accessible. An optional G5 secondary display is available to further enhance operator control and customization, offering expanded functionality in a dual-screen layout. To further boost jobsite performance, the P-Tier models can now be equipped with SmartDetect from the factory. This optional camera-based system enhances operator awareness by detecting objects and people near the machine and provides visual and distinctive audible bystander alerts on the in-cab display. When equipped with SmartDetect, the G5 display acts as a secondary screen, while the nextgeneration primary display remains the main interface. Combining cameras, radar and machine learning, SmartDetect aids in improving situational awareness and productivity on the jobsite.

Lastly, to support greater material handling efficiency, the P-Tier Wheel Loaders are now available with new high-strength steel buckets featuring extended lips. These redesigned buckets increase material holding capacity by approximately five percent, allowing customers to move more material per pass and finish jobs more quickly. SP

Choosing The Best Boom

A clean sewer system creates a healthier community. Sewer cleaners are used to efficiently remove blockages and prevent buildup. Breaking up blockages often demands a combination approach that includes the use of a boom.

That means using water jetting to break up the blockage and vacuum technology to suck up the debris that created the blockage in the first place. For a combination sewer cleaner truck, this requires the use of a hose reel to manage water jetting and a 6-8-inch vacuum hose to enter the sewer to suck the debris through a boom and into a debris tank on the truck.

A boom is a mechanized arm that can extend off a sewer cleaner and be easily maneuvered allowing the operator to precisely position the suction hose to reach hard-toaccess locations and depths common to underground sewer lines and catch basins.

Vactor has options including fully hydraulic, extendable, telescoping and 360-degree rotation booms in a variety of lengths to tackle any sewer maintenance challenge. But choosing the best boom for a given application or situation can be a challenge. Vactor has a few tips for getting it right.

Consider the application

Booms have multiple applications, most commonly

sewer line maintenance, hydro excavation and catch basin cleaning. When removing debris and blockages from a sewer line, the boom is crucial for directing the highpressure water jet while simultaneously vacuuming the loosened debris. Choosing the right boom for the job will increase efficiency and effectiveness. The Vactor 2100i 10’ telescoping boom, for example, is ideal for sewer cleaning and hydro excavation of blockages, while Vactor’s RDB 1015 is great for catch basin and lift station cleaning.

Know the depth of the site

Booms vary in both their reach from the truck and their depth into the ground. A Vactor 5x5 boom may be effective for a shallow site, while a deeper site might require the 15’ depth.

Consider time constraints

In most cases, it takes several minutes to lift additional tubing off the rack to extend a truck’s boom. Vactor’s rapid deployment booms, like the RDB 1015 boom, increase operator convenience and reduce set-up and tear-down

time. The RDB 1015 telescopes 10 feet out and extends an additional 15 feet down for faster cleaning of catch basins, sewer lines and utility holes without taking the time to manually assemble and disassemble added tubing between locations. The RDB 1015 boom can be added to the 2100i and iMPACT combination sewer cleaners to optimize performance.

Get to know the location

Booms are designed to work with the existing landscape and infrastructure. In areas with dense vegetation or tree canopies, a longer boom may be needed to reach the worksite without risking worker and truck safety. In more condensed urban areas, a smaller boom like a 5’x5’ or 7’ telescope model may be the safest option to minimize disturbance. The Vactor 7’ hydraulic model features 360-degree rotation, maximizing efficiency on complex sites.

In addition to choosing the right boom for the job, ensure operators are properly trained before beginning operation. Operators control the boom using a remote or joystick from the truck’s cab. This allows for precise positioning of the boom while allowing operators to maintain a safe distance.

Vactor is revolutionizing sewer cleaning through the continued development of new and improved technology. For more information on how sewer cleaning can be better, faster and safer, visit Vactor.com. SP

Kenworth Chillicothe Plant Hosts Fourth Annual Kenworth Truck Parade

The Kenworth truck assembly plant in Chillicothe, Ohio recently held the fourth annual Kenworth Truck Parade in the heart of downtown Chillicothe.

This year, the parade honored Kenworth’s iconic W900 model, a symbol of American trucking culture.

The 2025 Kenworth Truck Parade brought more than 50 new, classic and customized Kenworth trucks from all over the United States. The featured Kenworths included a vintage 1923 Kenworth –built the year the company was founded – models from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, through to present day trucks manufactured at the Chillicothe plant.

“The Kenworth truck parade has become a special Ross County community tradition,” said Jack Schmitt, Kenworth Chillicothe assistant plant manager. “The event wouldn’t be possible without the drivers who travel to Chillicothe to share their passion for Kenworth trucks, or without the community support that makes this parade a successful event each year.”

As part of Kenworth’s tribute to the storied his-

tory of the classic W900, the last truck in the parade was the newly introduced W900 Legacy Edition, which pays homage to the model series in its final full year in production. This year’s parade

also featured distinguished guest and driver, Army veteran Cory Troxell, who was last year’s “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” award winner. For the past 10 years, Kenworth, FASTPORT and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative have partnered to search for Ameri-

ca’s top rookie military veteran driver who successfully transitioned to the trucking industry following military service. Kenworth provides the program’s grand prize, which last year was a Kenworth T680, equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain featuring the PACCAR MX13 engine, PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission and PACCAR DX-40 tandem rear axles. Troxell, who drove his new truck in this year’s parade, is employed by Stevens Transport, who also nominated him for the “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” award. More information about this year’s program, can be found at Nominate – Transition Trucking. The parade was concluded by up-andcoming Nashville artist, Blaine Bunting.

Leading up to the truck parade, the Kenworth Chillicothe plant held events at its facility for drivers and their

families participating in and attending the parade. Drivers had an opportunity to tour the Kenworth Chillicothe plant to see where many of Kenworth’s trucks are built. The plant also hosted an employee family event on the plant’s property during the day of the parade.

The Kenworth Chillicothe plant and the United Way of Ross County teamed up to coordinate a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds going to the United Way of Ross County. During the parade members of the United Way of Ross County made their way around the event to sell raffle tickets and through sponsorships of the VIP area along the truck parade route. In total, over $43,000 was donated to the United Way of Ross County. The Kenworth Chillicothe plant opened in 1974 and is located on a 120-acre site 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio. The 622,000 squarefoot plant features advanced manufacturing technologies, including robotic assembly, and a state-of-the-art paint facility that utilizes the latest technology in the industry. Since 2018, Kenworth has invested nearly $400 million in the Chillicothe plant. SP

Mack Trucks Introduces All-New Mack Anthem

Mack Trucks has launched the all-new Mack Anthem, a completely redesigned truck built for regional-haul applications that delivers enhanced maneuverability, improved fuel efficiency and industry-leading driver comfort.

“The transportation industry is evolving rapidly with fleet managers facing rising operational costs, complex logistics demands and ongoing driver recruitment challenges,” said Stephen Roy, global president of Mack Trucks. “The allnew Anthem responds to these challenges by delivering practical innovations that move the industry forward. Building on Mack’s legacy of innovation, the Anthem incorporates many of the same cutting-edge technologies and design principles that we’ve developed for our new Pioneer long-haul model, bringing advanced innovations to today’s regional-haul market.”

The new Anthem is the second vehicle Mack has launched in 2025, comple-

menting the recently intro-

stantially better in all aspects. The all-new Anthem delivers improvements in every area that matters to customers’ businesses: fuel efficiency, maneuverability, driver comfort, safety, connectivity and uptime. The Anthem truly is the ‘New Standard of Regional Haul.’”

Enhanced Maneuverability for Regional Applications

duced Pioneer model.

“The all-new Anthem represents a significant step forward for Mack and for the regional-haul segment,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “It carries the same name as its predecessor because it embodies the same values and attributes with measurable improvements but is sub-

A key differentiator of the new Anthem is its enhanced maneuverability, achieved through a shorter bumperto-back-of-cab (BBC) length of 113.5 inches compared with the Pioneer’s 125.5 inches. This 12-inch difference makes the Anthem ideal for navigating tight spaces and urban environments. The redesigned hood dramatically improves forward visibility,

allowing drivers to see approximately 12 feet closer to the front bumper compared with previous designs, significantly reducing the risk of front-corner collisions.

“If you want maximum fuel efficiency, the Pioneer is the answer. If you want maximum maneuverability, the Anthem is the answer,” said Fernando Couceiro, vice president of highway trucks at Mack Trucks. “While both trucks deliver exceptional performance, the Pioneer maximizes fuel efficiency while the Anthem excels in maneuverability, allowing

customers to choose the right tool for their specific application.”

Improved Fuel Efficiency

The new Anthem delivers up to 10% improvement in fuel efficiency compared with the previous model, a significant advantage for fleets looking to reduce operating costs. This can translate to approximately $5,000 in annual fuel savings per truck.

“This is not a facelift or a refresh,” Couceiro said. “This is a brand-new truck from the ground up. We’ve reimagined what a regional haul truck can

be, focusing on the features that directly impact our customers’ bottom line.”

Industry-Leading Comfort and Design

The Anthem, offered in day cab, 44-inch sleeper and 64-inch sleeper configurations, features the same interior cab space as the Pioneer, offering drivers a premium work environment designed to reduce fatigue and improve satisfaction. The cab interior is completely redesigned and offers exceptional comfort with a cab that’s nine inches wider

Manitoulin Transport Delivers Life Saving Pet Food To Wildfire

Affected Communities

As wildfires continue to displace communities across Manitoba and Northern, Ontario, Manitoulin Transport is proud to have played a key role in delivering 20 pallets of emergency pet food supplies, in partnership with the Hamilton Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) and Uber Freight.

These shipments are helping feed hundreds of pets impacted by this year’s devastating wildfires.

Manitoulin Transport delivered more than 20,000 lbs of emergency pet food to Save a Dog Network Canada in Winnipeg. This critical delivery was provided at no cost through coordination with Uber Freight and ensured rapid access to food for displaced animals across Manitoba.

At Manitoulin Transport, we recognize the important role transportation can play in supporting communities during emergencies,” said Jeff King, President of Manitoulin Transport. “We’re proud to work alongside the HBSPCA to help ensure that pets, and the people who care for them, receive

the supplies they need during these challenging times. We are committed to doing everything we can. It’s important to be there when it matters most.”

“These efforts underscore what’s possible when dedicated partners come together,” said John Gerrard, CEO of the HBSPCA. “Manitoulin Transport’s dedication and unwavering commitment to this cause made it possible to get food into some of the hardest-hit areas quickly and safely.”

As wildfires continue to impact communities across the country, coordinated efforts remain essential to ensure that vital resources reach those in need. SP

than the previous model. New wide-base seats feature optional ventilation and heating and massage functions, while the stand-up sleeper options provide enough headroom for drivers to stand upright. Premium quality mattresses and blackout curtains enable improved rest.

The Anthem also has advanced safety features, including an optional digital mirror system that eliminates traditional blind spots, a standard front airbag, and an Integrated Curtain Airbag (ICA) system. The ICA system is mounted in the overhead compartment above the driver’s left shoulder and deploys in rollover events to protect the driver from impact with side glass. Additional integrated driver assistance systems have demonstrated a 43% reduction in near-miss incidents during controlled testing.

“From an interior perspective, the new Anthem and the Pioneer share the same dimensions, features and finishes, so our customers can enjoy the same outstanding comfort, no matter which model they choose,” said Vince Lok-

ers, specialist chief designer at Mack Trucks, who designed the interior of the all-new Anthem. “The only difference is that the Anthem won’t offer the big sleeper configuration available with the Pioneer.”

The new Anthem features Mack Connect, the company’s most advanced telematics platform, providing fleet managers unprecedented visibility into operations.

The MyMack driver app allows drivers to pre-heat or cool their cab, check fluid levels, and monitor tire pressures from their phones. Over-theair programming enables overnight software updates without service appointments, while the predictive maintenance system has been shown to reduce unplanned stops by 20%.

Integration with Mack’s GuardDog Connect automatically transmits service data to dealers, resulting in a 37% reduction in overall downtime compared with previous-generation trucks.

Target Industries and Applications

The new Anthem is ideal for weight-conscious customers and industries including:

• Bulk haulers (fuel, chemicals, food grade products)

• Dry bulk operations

• Food and beverage distribution

• General freight operations

• Less-than-truckload (LTL) services

“The Anthem is lightweight, which contributes to its fuel efficiency and makes it particularly well-suited for weight-sensitive applications,” Couceiro said.

The new Mack Anthem will be available for order starting in August 2025, with production beginning in January 2026. Mack dealers nationwide will have demonstration models available for customer evaluation.

“We’ve built this truck based on extensive customer input, ensuring it meets the real-world needs of regional-haul operations,” Randall said. “The Anthem combines Mack’s legendary toughness and reliability with cutting-edge technology and design, creating a truck that doesn’t just meet today’s challenges – it’s built for tomorrow’s demands as well.” SP

A Tale of Good Cops

We all hear horror stories of how badly cops have treated truckers, but I have none to tell, because three of my four cop experiences were all very positive.

The first found me lost while roaming the streets of NYC just after daylight. Observing one of New York City’s “finest” sitting on a three-wheeler while parked at a curb, I stopped and asked him for directions to deliver my load of paper. He told me I had driven past the address, and he told me that I needed to turn around and go back the other way. He said, “Can you swing it around in this intersection?” I replied that although there was enough room to make a U-turn, the traffic was too heavy to attempt the maneuver. He said, “You think so?” He climbed out of his three-wheeler, walked into the middle of the intersection, blew his whistle while indicating that all traffic, from all four directions, would stop immediately, and then looked at me and shrugged his shoulders, as if to say, “Well?”

I quickly performed my 360-degree turn, waved thanks to him, and took off down the street. Half a block later, upon hearing a siren, I looked in the mirror and saw his lights, indicating that I should pull over. Damn, I figured he had set me up so he could give me a ticket for making a U-turn in the intersection.

I pulled over and got out of the truck. He walked up to me and said that he had remembered the delivery address as being a “mother” for truckers, due to the fact that trucks had to back into the dock from the blind side, and he issued, “Follow me.” Not only did he lead me the halfdozen blocks to the correct address, but once again he got off his vehicle to stop traffic for me to, sure enough, back it in from the blind side. (For you non-truckers, the blind side is when you must look at the mirror on the passengers’ side of the cab. You can’t cheat by looking out of your driver’s door.) Any driver who ever said NYC cops were asses hadn’t met this fine gentleman.

In another city, at another time, I was directed to pull into a delivery alley to unload some furniture at the main post office in downtown Chi-

headed. Replying that I was staying on 301 N, while heading to New Jersey, he told me he would not have a problem if I wanted to pick up my speed if the truck was capable, since he was the only trooper out tonight.

cago. Two guys met me at the rear of the trailer, and I asked if they could help me with the three extremely heavy government desks. They informed me that, since they were federal employees, they were prohibited from getting on my trailer. With that news, I struggled as I pushed these 400-pound desks to the rear of the trailer. As I pushed them enough for the fellows to reach them, I was happy to hear each of them utter, “goddamn these are heavy!”

I closed the trailer doors and then climbed into the tractor to continue through the alley, (since the receiver had said every other trucker did this.) Well, evidently these other trucks were of the smaller delivery truck style, because my 13’6” trailer wouldn’t even come close to clearing some of the fire escape ladders protruding down the length of the alley. I slowly began backing up toward where I had entered the alley, but I stopped upon reaching a busy sidewalk, and an even busier roadway.

I have no idea where he came from, but one of Chicago’s “finest” noticed my dilemma. He did not even consult me as he stopped oncoming traffic by parking his car to block the lanes. The policeman got out of his car, halted the sidewalk pedestrians, and then directed me to continue backing into the highway. Fine cop number two!

My third cop experience was with a Maryland State Trooper on US Highway 301 North on Maryland’s eastern shore. It was close to midnight as I crossed William Lane Chesapeake Bay Bridge east of Annapolis. CB-equipped drivers informed everyone that there was a Smoky getting onto 301 N from Highway 50. I was driving the speed limit, while pulling a reefer load of pharmaceuticals, so I maintained my speed since I knew the trooper was behind me. The trooper soon passed me, and I flashed my lights for him to come back over. He came on the CB and said, “Thanks, Mr. WMTS.” We conversed for a few minutes, and he inquired where I was

It didn’t take too long before I started creeping up on him, and he said something like, “Man, I guess it is capable of more than the speed limit!” The trooper soon had to exit, and his parting words were. “I just checked, and the roadway is clear to the Delaware line, so keep the hammer down. Hope to talk to you again someday.” I never saw, or heard, from him again, but the good memory is still quite vivid.

My last cop experience was more chicken s__t than anything else. I had entered the PA Turnpike at Breezewood and then headed west toward Pittsburgh. The Turnpike Police weren’t too creative around this location, because every trucker knew that a trooper was usually “hiding” behind the bridge close to the Police Barracks, so I made sure I was driving at the speed limit.

Well, he was where he was supposed to be, and I was sur-

prised when he pulled out, turned on his flashing lights, and pulled me over. I got out of the truck and walked back to his car, (you were allowed to do that then) and he informed me that my trailer marker lights were not working.

The trooper followed me back to the front of the trailer, and I climbed-up onto the catwalk. I jiggled the pigtail, and the lights came back to life. I hopped down, and I thanked him for letting me know the lights were out. The trooper said, “You’re welcome. Please bring your license and truck

registration back to my car.”

It must have been a slow night, or he needed to make quota, even though lawmen will swear that there is no such thing as a quota, because the bastard issued me a ticket for lights not working, or some similar infraction.

I questioned why he had to give me a ticket, since now the lights were working fine, and he just shrugged and said that I should have jiggled the pigtail before I came around the curve where he was sitting. Because I didn’t want him to write more tickets, I waited until I had driven away before

I called him a helluva lot of unkind things.

I suppose, in the overall scheme of things, three out of four good cop experiences ain’t too bad. SP

Distinction Aluminum Hoppers Get Upgrade From Lode King

The flagship line of Distinction aluminum hopper trailers from Lode King represents decades of listening and learning from customer needs and requirements.

This model was previously designed as an all-steel trailer featuring three hoppers and a rear discharge hopper. We have since reconfigured this trailer to include two hoppers in the centre with a single discharge hopper at the rear.

Landing Gear

The aluminum Jost landing gear is standard on the Distinction series trailer. It features a galvanized insert and comes with a 10-year warranty and a 5-year maintenance-free package.

Control Box

Inside the control box, you

can control the suspension and lighting. Also, inside is the air gauge box.

Steer Axle

Due to the lift mechanism integrated into the steer axle system, a half-round fender cannot be used. However, there is a close-out above the steer axle to prevent debris from flying up into the hopper area.

Additionally, there is a mudflap at the back of the axle to prevent debris from flying up against the chute shaft of the next hopper.

Fenders

The half-rounded fenders on this trailer are mounted using the same stub shaft design as all other Distinction series models.

They are secured with a stainless steel mounting bracket, which has replaced the previous tube-style

mount. Additionally, a filler plate is positioned between each axle to prevent debris from passing through. Beneath that is an extra flap to keep the debris from flying into the next axle.

Suspension & Wheel Options

All of our trailers are equipped with the Henrickson Intraax 23K suspension, available with various wheelend configurations.

The Hendrickson TIREMAAX Pro Inflation System is an excellent option for improved tire life. This system ensures that all tires remain at a consistent pressure.

Chute Gates

Each chute features a stainless-steel door, shafts, and a rack supported by an aluminum frame. Nylon rollers beneath the chute and replaceable wear strips on the top of the gate ensure smooth

operation and longevity.

Discharge Opening

The discharge opening has a gate that opens and rolls into position. Beneath it, the discharge chute was designed to allow the grain to pass the bumper freely to minimize hang-up.

Lighting

Truck-Lite supplies all lighting, and four lighting packages are available to suit your needs.

Available lighting configurations include a base model, a three-light package,

a five-light package, and a seven-light package. Within all packages, oval lights on top of the trailer are standard.

Regardless of the lighting package selected, the three rear lights in the center function as high-mount brake lights, while the two lights on the sides serve as signal lights, improving visibility and safety. The lower three lights operate as clearance lights, with the outermost lights also functioning as brake and signal indicators.

Trailer Tarp Features

The tarp crank is located at

the back of the trailer. Because of the length of the trailer, tarp cords have been added to prevent the wind from blowing the tarp over.

Each tarp hood can feature optional vents at both the front and rear to stay up and out of the way, eliminating the need for sidewall vents. On the top of the trailer, a vent is mounted at the rear directly above the lights. Michels supplies the tarping, and you have various colour options available for your tarp. SP

VMAC Showcases Lean Expertise

VMAC is deeply committed to Lean as a fundamental operating philosophy that permeates every level of the organization.

The company’s focus is on streamlined workflows, ongoing process improvement, and delivering consistent value across the business. From industrial design to customer service, VMAC’s Lean mindset ensures that every step is optimized to eliminate waste, enhance efficiency, and support sustainable growth.

According to bdc.ca, “Lean (also called Lean manufacturing or Lean enterprise) is a structured approach for improving operational efficiency, with a specific focus on reducing non-value-added activity in a business. It can help lower costs, make cus-

tomers and employees happier, and reduce errors, accidents and delays.”

At the heart of VMAC’s commitment is a companywide embrace of Lean thinking that extends beyond the production floor. Cross-functional teams including engineering, operations, logistics, marketing, sales, and administration all contribute to Lean objectives. VMAC also emphasizes the importance of continuous feedback and improvement, rewarding team members who identify potential safety issues or propose new ways to eliminate waste.

VMAC’s dedication to Lean principles was recognized on a national level when Rafael Marcao, VMAC’s Director of Enterprise Excellence, was invited to speak in June at the Canadian Manufacturing & Exporters (CME) “Embracing Excellence 2025” Lean Conference in Win-

nipeg, Manitoba. The event brought together thousands of leaders, managers, and Lean practitioners from across Canada to exchange knowledge and explore best practices in enterprise excellence. CME is run by manufacturers for manufacturers, led by a national board of directors made up of senior leaders from a diverse group of manufacturers. Raphael’s presentation highlighted VMAC’s journey by sharing one of the successful projects performed using Value Stream Mapping, one of the main Lean Manufacturing tools. Rafael shared his experience in value stream mapping multiple different environments and how to get the most out of this tool.

Rafael has a proven track record of Lean leadership, including a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt earned at Caterpillar in Brazil, and advanced training in Lean Manufactur-

ing Engineering. His role is to shape and execute a cohesive Lean strategy across all departments to strengthen manufacturing capacity while nurturing a high-performance, teamwork-focused culture.

Lean emphasizes empowering every coworker to challenge existing processes and pursue continuous improvement. With systems like 5S, Value Stream Mapping, storyboards, and Kaizen implemented across all departments, Lean is a shared responsibility, reinforced through regular audits, workspace improvements, and recognition of measured results.

“At VMAC we foster the utilization of Lean principles across all departments and multi-functional teams. We

are fortunate to have a highly integrated and verticalized process, being able to design for Lean manufacturing, while implementing daily improvements on current processes. Having the expertise to utilize the right tool in the right place will guarantee consistent results. The Lean conference held by CME was a great opportunity to showcase our know-how but also to exchange knowledge with other Lean practitioners in a nation-wide event,” said Rafael Marcao.

Lean manufacturing, a concept pioneered by Toyota in the 1930s, remains a foundational principle for operational excellence. While the term “Lean” wasn’t commonplace until the late 1980s, Toyota’s early focus on con-

tinuous flow and waste reduction led to the development of the Just-In-Time (JIT) production system. This methodology streamlined every stage of production, from the moment a customer order was received to the delivery of the final product, by eliminating inefficiencies and minimizing downtime.

Just as Toyota’s system fostered harmony across its manufacturing process, VMAC’s commitment to Lean fuels innovation in mobile air compressor systems. By embedding Lean thinking into product development and process design, VMAC ensures dependable performance, efficient production, and unrivaled reliability. SP
