Additionally, MAJOR hosted the educational seminar “Optimizing Screening Performance: Wire Selection & Process Customization.” The session explored strategies for selecting and customizing screen media to enhance efficiency, improve durability and optimize performance.
“AGG1 is a great opportunity to speak directly with our customers about the issues they’re facing in the aggregates industry. We’re excited to meet with everyone at the show, and we look forward to the opportunity to showcase how our screen media can benefit producers in the long run,” said Ian Edwards, vice president of global sales
FLEX-MAT Modular Series – The FLEX-MAT Modular Series binds the wire to MAJOR’s distinctive, limegreen polyurethane strips. This allows the wires to vibrate independently from end to end under material contact. The high frequency — 8,000 to 10,000 cycles per minute — adds to the vibration of the screen box to speed up material separation and passing.
OPTIMUMWIRE –
Hailed as “the longest-lasting wire,” OPTIMUMWIRE sets the standard in lowering cost per ton of material by dramatically increasing screen media throughput and wear
how to perform inspections. By offering tips and educational information at inspection points, exercises help trainees complete lessons independently and at their own pace, in addition to under the supervision of an instructor. As a result, training is faster and more effective. In addition, CM Labs’ walkaround inspection training includes equipment malfunctions and breaks, generated at random. This exposes trainees to a wide variety of issues, preparing them for the real issues they will encounter when completing walkaround inspections on real jobsites.
“Malfunctions and breaks don’t happen often, but when they do, you want your operators to be able to spot them,” said Alan Limoges, Manager of Product Growth and Partnerships. “Our exercises
introduce malfunctions into the inspection at random, which teaches operators to remain vigilant. Also, by simply
completing the walkaround inspection, they learn the various components of the machine, what each component looks like, and what they do.” Walkaround Inspection is now available as part of the following Intellia Training Packs: Motor Grader, Articulated Dump Truck, Mini Excavator, Backhoe, Dozer, Tracked Excavator, Wheeled Excavator, and Wheel Loader. All existing customers with AM&S agreements will also receive walkaround inspection in their Motor Grader and Articulated Dump Truck Training Packs. SP

Immigration Plays Critical Role In Construction Sector
In response to federal immigration policy adjustments, Executive Director of the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAE) released the following statement:
“RCCAO supports the critical role immigration plays in bolstering Ontario’s construction industry, where immigrants account for 23% of all general contractors and builders, helping to meet rising demand for skilled trades across the province. As Ontario faces a significant wave
of retirements in the coming decade of over 100,000 workers, predictable and targeted immigration remains essential to bridging critical labour shortages.
While the federal government’s goal to transition more workers currently in Canada to permanent resi-
dency is encouraging, the allocations for targeted programs like the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) should be protected and expanded to ensure that effective pathways remain available. Additionally, successful and effective initiatives like the pilot program for out-of-status construction workers in the GTA should be made permanent and expanded to retain essential construction workers already contributing to Ontario’s economy.
We also support measures to re-evaluate National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes to better align federal immigration programs with long-term labour market needs, particularly in key sectors like the skilled trades.
RCCAO urges a balanced approach to immigration policy that strengthens effective programs like OINP through enhanced federal-provincial collaboration, builds on successful initiatives, and supports Ontario’s economic future through strategic workforce planning.” SP

Alberta Tax Credit Fuels
Bioprocessing Industry
The province of Alberta continues to attract job-creating investment and diversify the provincial economy.
Alberta’s inviting and taxfriendly business environment, free and fast-flowing economy, and abundant agricultural resources make it one of the best places to do business in North America. In addition, the AgriProcessing Investment Tax Credit (APITC), launched in spring 2023, helps to attract investment that will further diversify Alberta’s agriculture industry.
The most recent example of a company choosing to grow its business in Alberta is Canary Biofuels, which has qualified for the APITC by constructing a cold press oilseed crushing plant in Lethbridge. Canary Biofuels is investing $18 million in the project that is expected to create 40 permanent and 25 temporary jobs, process 200,000 tonnes of seed per year and produce value-added products such as canola oil and meal. Through the AgriProcessing Investment Tax
Credit, Alberta’s government has granted Canary Biofuels conditional approval for a tax credit estimated at $1.7 million.
“Alberta is an agriculture powerhouse with a thriving food and bioprocessing sector,” stated RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “The AgriProcessing Investment Tax Credit has made the province a preferred destination for large-scale agri-processing investments and encourages companies like Canary Biofuels to invest in our province, create jobs and diversify the economy.”
The APITC provides a 12 per cent non-refundable, non-transferable tax credit when businesses invest $10 million or more in a project to build or expand a valueadded agri-processing facility in Alberta. The program is open to any food manufacturers and bioprocessors that
add value to commodities like grains or meat or turn agricultural by-products into new consumer or industrial goods.
“The Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit is a prime example of how our government is strengthening our agriculture industry by supporting businesses, like Canary Biofuels, to grow, create jobs, and continue to help drive our economy forward,” said Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East.
Canary Biofuels is an agricultural processor that produces feedstock for the renewable fuels industry as well as high-value products for the livestock feed industry. It is headquartered in Calgary with a process facility in Lethbridge.
“Canary would like to thank the Government of Alberta for its support,” said George Wadsworth, CEO Canary Biofuels Inc. “Programs like the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit are essential for smaller companies like Canary to access capital. This project will support jobs and indirectly support thousands of Albertan and Canadian oilseed farmers by providing more localized offtake for their crops, including
off-spec materials.”
Alberta’s agri-processing sector is the second-largest manufacturing industry in the province and the biofuel industry plays an important role in the sector, generating millions in annual economic impact and creating thousands of jobs. Alberta continues to be an attractive place for agricultural investment due to its agricultural resources, one of the lowest tax rates in North America, a business-friendly environment, and a robust transportation network to connect with international markets.
Quick facts
On Feb. 7, 2023, government announced the introduction of the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit
through Budget 2023.
On Apr. 24, 2023, Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit began accepting applications from agri-processing corporations for conditional approval.
As of Feb. 11, 2025, 16 corporations had applied to the program for projects worth about $1.63 billion in new investment in Alberta’s agriprocessing sector.
So far, 10 corporations have received conditional approval under the program. Each one must submit progress reports on their project, then apply for a tax credit certificate when the project is complete.
Canary Biofuel’s crush process incorporates a proprietary cold press design that allows the processing of all
varieties and qualities of seed while producing a super degummed quality oil suitable for animal feed, renewable diesel and renewable aviation biofuels. In addition, the non-solvent process produces a high-value animal feed ingredient.
The current crush plant in Lethbridge has been operating at 50,000 MT/year and has just completed the first phase of expansion at 80,000 MT/Y with following expansion phases of 120,000 and finally 200,000 MT/Y to be completed sometime in 2026.
Canary Biofuel currently employs about 25 people in Canada and at full expansion it is expected they will employ more than 40. SP

The Unique Industrial Value Of The Articulated Hauler
There is so much more to an ADT than simply being able to navigate the toughest terrain and haul tonnes of material stably and safely.
ADTs (articulated dump trucks) are heavy-duty vehicles specifically designed for hauling material over rough and uneven terrain. Articulated hauler manufacturer Rokbak explains why these machines stand apart from other trucks and their unique usefulness in industrial applications.
Due to their robust, offroad performance, articulated haulers are a universal and identifiable asset on industrial sites.
From civil engineering to mining and quarrying, articulated haulers – defined by the tractor unit moving independently from the body trailer unit – have become indispensable in moving material efficiently. While rigid haulers can perform in prepared environments and long-haul operations, articulated haulers find their niche
in challenging terrains where adaptability and safety are paramount.
“An articulated hauler is a three-axle, six-wheel-drive machine built to transport material across unprepared ground, including areas with poor load-bearing properties, mud or steep inclines,” says Scott Pollock, a senior product manager at articulated hauler manufacturer Rokbak. “Its key design feature is the oscillating central pivot, which allows the cab and trailer to move independently. Also operating as the steering unit for the truck, this flexibility ensures the hauler can navigate undulating terrain without tipping, a task where rigid haulers may struggle.”
Articulated versus rigid
Deciding between a rigid and an articulated hauler depends on three key factors
– haul distance, ground conditions and the type of material being transported. These considerations determine the optimal and most costeffective hauling solution for customers.
Rigid haulers can move higher volumes of material quickly over longer distances, but only on prepared roads.
The articulated hauler, however, excels in moving material of a lighter density over shorter distances, when the track might not be the most pristine.
Thanks to its low ground pressure and adaptability to greater tyre options, such as enhanced flotation or widebased tyres, the articulated hauler is ideal for situations where prepared roads are absent, such as low load bearing ground for construction or preparing quarries and mines. It is specifically designed to
handle loads across this type of terrain efficiently, offering unmatched productivity and safety in these environments.
“On muddy terrain or ground with high fluidity or very high resistance, the ADT can ride over undulations and unprepared surfaces,” adds Scott. “The oscillation allows the articulated truck to navigate where a rigid hauler would be at risk of sinking or tipping over.”
Similarly, where rigid trucks can be tasked with moving heavier, more crudely blasted materials, articulated haulers are suited to transporting less dense, less abrasive and well-shot material. Moving this lighter material, found in top surface earth and muck shifting, can be a critical application in civil engineering and construction in providing firm ground foundations. Articulated haulers are also used to move the finished, processed materials used for site redevelopment.

JCB Celebrates One Million Backhoes
JCB is celebrating a major machine milestone with the production of its one millionth Backhoe Loader.
The first JCB Backhoe rolled off the production line in Rocester, Staffordshire in 1953. Called the Mark One, it brought the new wonder of hydraulic power to construction equipment for the first time.
In the first full year of production in 1954 just 35 of the machines were built and it took more than 20 years for the first 50,000 to be made. It took 59 years for the first half million JCB Backhoes to be manufactured – but less than 13 years for the next half million to be produced, culminating in these celebrations.
JCB now manufactures Backhoe Loaders in the UK, India, Brazil and it remains one of the most versatile and productive machines in the world. Despite the maturity of the versatile Backhoe Loader, it is still one of the biggest selling pieces of construction machinery and it remains the world’s 4th most popular machine in the construction equipment sales league table.
WHEEL LOADERS
Hundreds of Backhoe Loader employees lined the road outside JCB’s World HQ, joining company Chairman Anthony Bamford to watch a cavalcade of 16 Backhoes from down the ages. These spanned a 1954 Mark I through to a 2025 3CX model. Also joining in the celebrations was retired JCB employee Ken Harrison, aged 100, who joined JCB as a welder in 1952 when only 29 people worked on the shop floor. Ken, one of the last known survivors of the production team that built the first JCB backhoes, retired 36 years later in 1988.
looking forward to the production of the next one million Backhoes.”
JCB has always invested heavily in its Backhoe Loader range and an early catalyst for growth was in 1980 which saw the £24 million launch of the technologically advanced 3CX. Customers then went on to reap the fuel saving benefits of the launch of JCB Backhoes powered by the JCB Dieselmax, a development which saves up to 11% in fuel costs. Today’s 3CX Pro is the fastest Backhoe Loader in the world, capable of speeds up to 50kph, reducing travel time between sites.
As well as Backhoes, JCB also manufactures Loadall telescopic handlers, tracked and wheeled excavators, wheeled loading shovels, mini and micro excavators, skid steer loaders, track loaders, compaction equipment, rough terrain forklifts and Fastrac tractors.
JCB Backhoes are manufactured in the UK, India and Brazil and the company sells the product in 120 different countries. The business unit which manufactures the machines has previously won six Queen’s Awards.
Royalty, Prime Ministers, politicians and TV stars have all been photographed in the cab of JCB Backhoes over the years. The JCB Backhoe was even the subject of a song which made the top of the UK charts. And it was a JCB Backhoe which robbers used in a
failed attempt to steal £350 million worth of diamonds from the Millennium Dome in 2000.
The one millionth JCB Backhoe to be produced was a 4CX model, which has been decorated in graffiti art by London-based artist and illustrator Hatch, and presented to Lord Bamford at the celebrations.
A New Era of Operator Efficiency
North American audiences were able to share in this production milestone during the ARA Show in Las Vegas. JCB displayed a new 3CX Pro model with special One Millionth livery in booth 3931, highlighting updates to the backhoe line including:
Enhanced Roading Capabilities: With a six-speed auto-shift transmission and a top speed of almost 30 mph, these machines deliver improved fuel efficiency and reduced travel time, crucial for utility repairs and emergency responses.
Updated Excavator End Design: Featuring a new outer box dipper, this design offers superior weight distribution, making it the optimal solution for thumb mounting. Operators benefit from improved stability and higher lift capacity when handling heavy materials at full reach, ensuring exceptional performance for tasks like material handling and demolition.
Upgraded Cab: The redesigned cab features a 7-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, ergonomic joystick controls and improved visibility through larger mirrors and LED work lights. This ensures that operators stay comfortable and focused throughout their shifts. SP

“I am the only person in the business now who can remember the early days when we first started to make backhoes in what was a former cheese factory in Rocester,” said Lord Bamford, JCB Chairman. “Looking back at that time, I could never have imagined that we would make one million of these diggers after such humble beginnings. Looking back is a fun thing to do but it’s always been JCB’s way to look forward,” continued Lord Bamford, “and I’m

Cat Releases New 395 Long Reach Excavator
The new Caterpillar 395 Long Reach Excavator makes easy work of long-distance applications such as dredging, ditch cleaning, and canal and waterway maintenance.
With a maximum digging depth of nearly 22 metres, and up to 28 metres of reach at ground level, Caterpillar says the 395 LRE is firmly in the ‘super long reach’ category, matching its outstanding stick and boom configuration with substantial digging force.
“Available as a kit, which can be retrofitted to any 395 model, the 395 LRE option provides operators with a boost to the capabilities and reach of a ‘standard’ 395, bringing its power, speed and fuel efficiency to bear on a whole new range of excavation applications,” says Vincent Migeotte, Caterpillar senior product and sales consultant.
“Fully integrated with the standard machine, the 395 LRE kit creates a highly specialized machine that takes in its stride all the challenges of working at distance.”
The aftermarket kit com-
prises an 11.8 m stick, a 15.5 m boom, and a CV linkage adapted for the new stick and boom. Boom cylinders form part of the kit, and the specially designed bucket offers capacity for up to 2m3 of material, depending on density.
Recognising that the super long reach excavator will frequently be used for underwater tasks, the kit also includes fully waterproofed sensor boxes to allow continued operation of the full range of next generation technologies, such as Cat Payload Management System, Cat 2D Grade control system, and Cat 2D E-fence. The latter keeps the front linkage within a predefined work area, providing greater operator confidence when working at distance and protecting the machine from damage while improving site safety.
“The kit’s been designed to cover every operating re-
quirement,” notes Migeotte, “so another important feature is the ability to equip the machine with high pressure or medium pressure auxiliary lines, with a quick coupler. This allows full use of retrofit hydromechanical work tools, such as a grapple.”
The undercarriage also receives an upgrade. A car body extension of 1.33 m provides a big boost to stability, while overall ground clearance gains another 85 mm. The configuration also adds extra height to the cab position, adding 24 cm over the standard and endowing the operator with significantly more all-round visibility.
Another nod to stability is in the design of the counterweight. Cleverly, Caterpillar has upped its mass by nearly 40%, but despite the increase to 21.5 mt, it sits within the same dimensions, preserving the machine’s tail ratio.
“The kit also underlines Caterpillar’s commitment to productive, safe worksites, with additional handrails making for safer access and egress, while as-standard rear and side view cameras can be supplemented by a 360-degree option for maximum visibility.”
HYDRAULIC BREAKERS
As well as safety, Migeotte says that the addition of the kit preserves all the characteristics of the standard 395, but with added versatility and perfor-
mance. “With the Cat 395 LRE, operators benefit from the same low costs of ownership, low fuel consumption and low maintenance, offering the same

BC Lumber Trade Council: U.S. Softwood Lumber Tariffs Are Unjustified and Harmful
The BC Lumber Trade Council recently released the following statement:
The U.S. government’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on softwood lumber and other Canadian exports is a punitive, unjustified protectionist measure that will cause economic harm in both Canada and the United States. BC softwood lumber producers already face 14.40% duties on their shipments to the U.S. Combined, these barriers will disrupt trade, raise costs for
consumers, and threaten jobs and communities on both sides of the border.
The Canada-U.S. lumber trade is mutually beneficial. American demand exceeds domestic supply-requiring U.S. builders to import about thirty percent of their lumber needs. Canadian producers fill most of this gap, ensuring a stable, predictable supply of quality lumber. Tariffs
disrupt this essential supply chain, increasing building material costs, at a time when affordability is already a major concern for American families.
For Canadian producers, higher tariffs erode competitiveness and put mills under financial strain-leading to curtailments, job losses, and economic harm to forestrydependent communities.
The BC Lumber Trade Council urges the Canadian government to work with U.S. counterparts to remove these tariffs and to reach a fair, long-term solution. Unjustified trade barriers weaken both economies and put workers, businesses, and consumers at risk SP

Some of the actions we are taking to advance this goal include incentivizing the adoption of cleaner fuels and technologies by port users and providing shore power connections to hundreds of cruise and container ships calling Vancouver every year, so they can plug into a clean source of power while at berth.
Another key contributor to the reduction of ship-source emissions and
decarbonization targets at the Port of Vancouver and worldwide is the transition from traditional marine fuels, such as heavy fuel oil and marine diesel, to alternative—and cleaner—fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG). Port authorities play a crucial role in enabling this energy transition by providing the infrastructure and services needed to support it, including in-port bunkering of alternative marine
fuels. This is why facilitating the use of LNG as a marine fuel is an integral part of our emissions reduction program.
What is bunkering?
Bunkering refers to the process of supplying and transferring any marine fuel, including LNG, into cargo ships’ fuel tanks—known as bunkers. The availability of this service in ports is critical to enabling trade. At the Port of Vancouver, bunkering operations occur daily—both in the anchorage areas and at marine terminals—in one of two ways: ship-to-ship (a bunkering vessel transfers the fuel into ships’ tanks), or truck-toship (tanker trucks are used to load ships’ tanks). The ship-to-ship method is most common for the bunkering of deep-sea cargo vessels, while truck-to-ship is typically used for refueling ships operating in local waters, including BC Ferries.
What is LNG and how does it contribute to emissions reduction?
LNG as fuel.
Supporting the use of LNG as a marine fuel at the Port of Vancouver
The port authority recently made a significant stride in facilitating the use of LNG—one of the most widely adopted alternative marine fuels—for cargo ships calling Vancouver by authorizing LNG bunkering operations to take place within the limits of the port.
port authority’s LNG accreditation program—also contribute to streamlining port calls.
In-port bunkering operations that meet the highest safety standards
Ensuring all ship and cargo movements—and supporting port operations— taking place in Vancouver harbour are conducted safely is central to our mandate as a Canada Port Authority. We do so by developing and implementing procedures and accreditations programs that meet the highest safety and environmental protection standards, and that all parties must adhere to. As such, the refueling of cargo ships with LNG and other marine fuels within port waterways is subject to stringent requirements that align with industry best practices and guidelines, as defined by the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (for LNG) and the International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals (for conventional fuels).
Strong Heritage, Strong Future
LNG is a natural gas that is cooled to the extremely low temperature of -160°C to reach a liquid form, for easier storage and transportation. It is considered a cleaner alternative to conventional marine fuel oils as it produces less harmful emissions from sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. As the global marine shipping industry strives to reduce its emissions footprint and comply with more stringent environmental regulations, cargo ships around the world are increasingly using
In November 2024, North Vancouver’s Seaspan Energy received the first-tobe-issued LNG bunkering accreditation from the port authority. This means it is now authorized to conduct ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at the Port of Vancouver. Seaspan Energy’s accreditation was issued following rigorous risk assessments and mitigation processes that considered international best practices around safety.
This accreditation makes LNG the first approved alternative fuel for ship bunkering at the Port of Vancouver, supports the energy transition, and aligns with the port authority’s emissions reduction goals. By allowing cargo ships powered with LNG to safely and efficiently refuel while in port, Seaspan Energy’s accreditation—along with the
For example, the guidelines established by the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) define a series of safety zones to protect LNG bunkering operations. These start from the bunkering connection point and radiate outwards, and include the hazardous zone, safety control zone, monitoring and security area, marine exclusion zone, and external zone. The need for—and size of—each zone is determined through a site-specific assessment process that uses SGMF guidance and tools.

ver also consider the distinctive features of the different areas of the port where these operations take place, including English Bay, Burrard Inlet, and the Fraser River, to ensure they are carried out as safely and efficiently as possible, and don’t interfere with—or pose a risk to— nearby vessels, communities, and infrastructure. Examples of those safety requirements and procedures include:
• Annual review and accreditation of all bunker suppliers operating within the port
• Detailed logging and record keeping of all bunkering operations conducted within the port
• Advance notice to the port authority of any bunkering operation set to take place within the port
• Reliable communication channels and protocols maintained throughout bunker transfer, to enable quick shutdown of the operation at any time, if needed Because it is stored and transported in cooling tanks to maintain its liquid state, the process of handling and transferring LNG into ships’
fuel tanks differs slightly from the bunkering of fuel oils and is subject to additional safety considerations. These include requirements for suppliers to use LNGspecific safety checklists and to only conduct bunkering operations within designated areas of the port. Any ship using LNG as fuel must also be approved by Transport Canada and comply with all relevant operating practices and procedures specific to their vessel type. By upholding the highest standards for all bunkering operations taking place within the Port of Vancouver, the port authority continues to meet its commitment to safety and environmental stewardship. Through robust safety standards, protocols, and accreditation programs, we can facilitate the maritime industry’s shift towards cleaner energy sources and support emissions reduction efforts for a more sustainable future.

Cat Introduces New 789D Autonomous Water Truck
Helping prevent haul road overwatering and underwatering, the new Cat 789D Autonomous Water Truck enhances productivity by enabling mine operations to digitally track water consumption and reduce waste.
Fully integrating into the mine site’s Cat Command autonomous haulage fleet to control haul road dust, the market’s first commercially available AWT is built on the field-proven 789D mining truck chassis and integrates the truck, tank and Cat Water Delivery System (WDS), connected with Cat MineStar technology.
Featuring Command for hauling, the new 789D AWT offers the same potential for greater utilization than staffed equipment. The fully autonomous truck reduces shift changes, meal breaks and other operational delays to improve efficiency. Complying with watering plans, the water truck seamlessly interacts with other autonomous equipment and integrates with customer mining pro-
cesses and systems managed by MineStar.
The 789D is the largest Cat water truck product offering that can accommodate up to 165,000 l (43,588 gal), depending on tank configuration. The AWT senses when the water tank is running low and can be programmed to integrate with the water refill station to fully automate the water refill process. The auto shutoff feature prevents tank overfilling.
“To meet customer requirements for dust control, Caterpillar implemented a MineStar-integrated watering model based on many years of site watering studies and Cat WDS performance data,” explains Corey Wurtzbacher, general manager and vice president of technology and global sales support at
Caterpillar. “This model allows the truck to monitor traffic, weather and road conditions, prioritize what areas need watered, when the areas need watered, and how many passes it should take to apply the correct amount of water saturation, for the given conditions. The integration of Caterpillar’s many years of autonomous truck operations and water delivery development have been combined to make a high performing autonomous watering solution.”
Fully integrated system
When Caterpillar set out to develop an autonomous water truck, integration with Cat MineStar Command for hauling and the Cat WDS was key to the entire integration process. The team began building communication
between the truck on-board systems and the office control consol to work together with the Cat WDS interface. To ensure seamless operation and proper communication between the water delivery system and MineStar, a compatibility check has been implemented in Cat WDS to confirm all truck control systems are running compatible software and reporting any onboard failures to the MineStar system for appropriate corrective action.
Fully integrated into the truck’s design, the exclusive
Cat WDS varies waterflow based on truck speed and automatically determines the correct amount of water needed to control dust. Knowing where, when and how much water to dispense, the 789D AWT helps customers conserve water, a scarce resource at many mining locations around the world.
When truck speed drops below the minimum watering speed setting, determined by site operations, the system halts water delivery to help prevent over-
watering, poor traction, and damage to haul road intersections and other stopping areas. When truck speed exceeds the minimum watering speed setting, the system begins depositing the specified amount of water commanded by MineStar. Cat WDS actively monitors water level and automatically turns off watering once the tank is empty. To reduce potential damage, the system has multiple safeguards in place to prevent the water pump from running dry.
This feature helps prolong water pump life and extends service intervals.
The automated system’s flat, controlled spray pattern delivers optimal litersper-square-meter (gallons/ square-foot) coverage across the haul road. Larger, heavier droplets designed to reach the ground aids in reducing spray loss to wind and evaporation.
Reducing health hazards associated with airborne particles, automated water delivery supports the reduction of dust that limits operator visibility for staffed equipment to enhance overall site safety. Remote tank fill control, complete with auto shut-off to prevent overfilling, eliminates the need for a worker to be involved in the refilling process, reducing the potential of slips and falls.
Mines can quickly switch the flexible 789D AWT from autonomous mode to staffed mode as necessary for tasks like front water cannon operation. The cannon has a capacity of distributing up to 2,839 l/min (759 gal/min) with a spray distance reaching 60 m (200 ft). Even with staffed operation, Auto Mode water delivery automates the
watering process to leverage variable water flow and automatic determination of the correct amount of water needed to control dust.
Scalable technology, supported by Cat dealers
Cat Water Solutions integrates the 789D truck chassis with the proven Cat WDS and innovative MineStar technology. If the site is not yet ready for a fully autonomous water truck, MineStar has cloudbased solutions that will work in the interim and allow customers to utilize, track, and measure the productivity of the 789D before it is put into autonomous operation. Options include a basic or premium package.
The basic package allows sites to track their asset and see, when, where and how it is performing:
• Location of truck
• Water level
• Fuel level
• Watering mode
• Truck speed
• Truck refills
• Water dispersed
• Truck utilization per shift
Premium will allow sites to track how their water trucks are tending to the site’s watering needs:
• Overall watering heat map to show the age of water currently put down by all trucks in a shift
• Watering heat map by truck to show where each truck watered and what mode was utilized
• Utilization of fill spots by each truck
• Replay of truck watering activity for up to 8 previous weeks of data, depending on how many assets are tracked
• Suggested area to water based on age of water and traffic utilization
When the site is ready for full autonomous mode, the water truck can be integrated into the MineStar ecosystem to work alongside the rest of the mining fleet.
This integrated autonomous water solution is fully supported by the Cat dealer and parts network. Covered by a Caterpillar factory standard warranty, the 789D AWT is eligible for Cat equipment protection plans (EPP) and customer value agreements (CVAs). Retrofit kits are available for existing Cat 789D truck platforms in the field. SP

Updates To Eagle Iron Works Classifying Tanks
Eagle Iron Works has recently made several updates to the valve bridge on its Water-Scalping Classifying Tanks.
With these updates, there will be no changes in the function of the machine. All tanks ordered moving forward will have the new valve bridge design, however, parts and service for older models will still be available through Eagle Iron Works.
The first change to the valve bridge is that it will now be a 24VDC system instead of a 120VAC system. Switching to 24VDC is occurring more in the industry due to it being safer to work with. This change also allows for the incorporation of M12 cables for all devices inside the bridge. By using M12 cables, the ribbon cable that previously ran from a terminal block bank to each station’s junction box via enclosed wire way has been eliminated. This is very labor-intensive and can present a challenge if a wiring issue occurs on site, possibly requiring an electrician to troubleshoot. The M12 cables are very user-friendly, weather tight, and readily available if an issue arises. M12 cables are also easy to replace as they just screw into devices such as IO link blocks and bulk heads.
Next, the stall motors in the Classifying Tank Valve Bridge will now use a proximity switch instead of a mercury switch. Mercury switches
are outdated and can be dangerous if broken and not disposed of properly. Mercury switch supply is also dwindling as proximity switches are becoming more common in the industry.
The next change to the design of the valve bridge is that junction boxes are being replaced with IO Link Blocks. The use of the IO Link Blocks allows for easier wiring and can also provide feedback from a station. In the previous design, if a solenoid went bad causing a valve not to cycle, the customer would not know until they viewed their product gradations. The new design allows feedback due to the IO Link Block sensing a short (failed solenoid) and will display this on the touchscreen. Each valve and stall motor assembly plugs into the IO Link Block which homeruns back to the junction box mounted to the bridge. These cables are clearly labeled under the bridge walkway to allow for maintenance without requiring drawings.
The new valve bridge design eliminates 37 pin cables. With the transition to IO Link Blocks, there is no more need for the 37 pin connectors or 37 pin cables. These pin cables are becoming less readily
available with suppliers and take a lot of time to produce since each wire needs to be soldered onto each pin of the connector. There are now two cables that are thinner and more manageable that will connect the control panel with the sand tank bridge. Additionally, if a cable were to go bad or be damaged, the 37 pin connectors would take up to a week to fix. These pin cables could often cause issues if they got kinked or damaged, creating difficulty when trying to troubleshoot issues within the system. Removing the cables allows for easier troubleshooting.
Lastly, in this new design, the fused terminal blocks that were used in older systems have been removed. Instead, there are circuit breakers in place for the different stations. This eliminates the need to replace the “one and done” style fuses, and instead, the circuit breakers will be tripped and only need to be reset once the reason for the trip is resolved.
These updates to the valve bridge design are necessary for several reasons, including improved safety, ease of assembly and troubleshooting. As the original valve bridge design ages, more components are becoming obsolete and harder to source. This new design uses modern components that are more readily available and currently being manufactured, making it easier to support into the future. SP

Military Projects: A Gallery
The Seabees, militarily referred to as Construction Battalion, were composed of all job descriptions having anything to do with construction, including engineers, builders, equipment operators, mechanics, and office personnel.
I was rated as an equipment operator. The first six months “in country,” I drove tractor-trailers and dump trucks. Another truck driver and I supplied most of all supplies and equipment to our battalion. Most of these supplies came from either Danang, 75 miles away, or from Hue, 25 miles away. All the jobs in our battalion were important, but the other driver and I felt like our roles were extremely important, especially when all our troops were excited those times we returned to our camp with loads of food and beer.
The last two months of our tour, I asked to get off the road to learn the operation of our Terex TS-24 scrapers. I was able to join with the guys who were building the main road into a superhighway. These behemoths, at 3,500 horsepower, were exhilarat-
ing to operate, and at the end of each day, I felt like I had contributed a lot to our work.
My Vietnam experience was eight months long, from October 1968 to May 1969. At the end of our tour, we were to spend the next six months at our home base in California, preparing to return to Vietnam for another eight-month tour. Thankfully, some of my buddies and I were offered an “early out,” which, of course, we accepted, rather than returning to the war.
I was proud to have served with my battalion, and our work effort was recognized by the Navy Department when our battalion was awarded “E,” for Best in Class. SP
