Overview 2016-2017 This year, all kinds of activities were organized by SUPport. This section includes the different construction site visits, workshops, lectures, and of course the lustrum week.

Openbare Gebouwen Bijzondere Projecten Op de afbeelding is de nieuwbouw van concertgebouw Musis Sacrum in Arnhem te zien. Aan de uitbreiding van het gebouw zijn strikte eisen verbonden, met name op het gebied van geluid. Op het gebied van architectuur is het bijzonderste aspect de plint van het gebouw. Qua bouwtechniek ligt de uitdaging bij de glazen schuifdeuren van maar liefst één bij vijf meter.

The editors’ word...

The third SUPporter of this college year is ready to read. The editors did their best to publish an exciting magazine. The theme of this edition focuses on public buildings and the architectural aspects related to their production processes. Public buildings are often of larger dimensions resulting in challenges.

The editorial team added the ‘certificate section’ in the SUPporter. This new section focuses on the subjects that are part of the Construction Technology Certificate and the Building Technology Certificate. The ‘certificate section’ is also present in this issue. You can read about Innovation on Site, the final project of the Construction Technology Certificate.

Besides the certificates and the ‘Special’ about public buildings, you can also find activities of the study association. For example the construction site visit to Strijp-S and the Continu trainings related to your personal future.

Below an overview of the three editions of this year is shown. The year began with the theme Innovation in the Built Environment. The second edition focused on the material glass and the year will end with this edition on public buildings.

The chairman’s word...

After the previous two editions of the SUPporter about innovation in the built environment and glass, it is now time for the third edition of this year. Museums, train stations, shops, libraries, these are all examples of public buildings. They are often accessible for everyone, this leads to different types of challenges during the design and construction phase. Occasionally a public building is combined with other functions, for instance ‘Het Maankwartier’. In this project there are shops combined with apartments. In the final design it is important that both functions complement each other. To achieve this all design challenges (i.e. routing) should be considered with great detail. This edition of the SUPporter contains various articles about the challenges companies encountered while designing or constructing a public building.

The importance of different design elements in public buildings is also embedded into courses at our faculty. A good example of this is the assignment about ‘Timmerhuis Rotterdam’ during a course in the BD&T certificate. During the course ‘Building technology with extreme complexity’ the students do research about the reasoning behind certain decisions regarding important design elements. Similar to previous years the course ‘Innovation on Site’ took place during the last quartile. In this course, groups of 3 to 4 students visit a construction site for a week. On site each group gets its own assignment related to a challenge on the construction site. More about the challenges these groups encountered can be found in this edition of the SUPporter.

After the lustrum week, which was filled with activities, we continued to organize educative but also fun activities for the students. These were all types of different activities for instance, building site visits, linked-in training, career event and the Built Environment Branch Activity. Not all activities that were organized are exclusively for students. In May we organized a masterclass, in this masterclass we aimed to show members of Bouwend Nederland what kind research was done at the university regarding the field of building and construction technology. Although the summer break is around the corner, we will organize one last activity this year. We will go to England and visit Liverpool and Manchester with a group of students.

Continu training Build your future You probably already have heard of Continu. For the people among us who have not or only have heard of their name: As an intermediary for contruction and industry Continu ensures that specialists get connected to each other and mostly connect clients to candidates. They think it is important to get to know you so they can find you the perfect fit. If you are looking for a job or an internship, be sure to check out their website or contact us so we can get you to the right person.

LinkedIn training

This year, Continu organized three workshops in association with SUPport, KOers and Cheops; the comfort zone workshop, the LinkedIn & CV training and a career event. All those workshops helped us prepare for finding a job for when we are graduated or finding an internship for earlier. But not only then the things we learned can be helpful. At the comfort zone workshop we learned how to improve our attitude in our daily life as well and this can come in handy when for example a project needs to be presented or when networking and meeting new people, but also in general our appearance is an important issue.

At the LinkedIn & CV training, mostly the LinkedIn account has been discussed. Why use it, how to make a good profile and how do you use it are questions answered in the training. Some profiles were showed and a few examples were given about what you should do with your LinkedIn account, or what you absolutely should not do. Do you want some help with your LinkedIn account? Look at the tips at the next page or step by at floor two.

The career event was all about the job interview. What questions can you expect and what kind of questions you should ask yourself. What are the most common

mistakes made at a job interview and how can you make sure you do not make the same mistakes? After this crash course, we now are all prepared for difficult and “unexpected” questions in our next interview. I’m sure we all have a job very soon!

What is important LinkedIn profile

on your

Profile picture Make sure your profile picture is a serious one and that your face is clearly visible.

Look into the camera, do not put your sunglasses on and use a background that is not distracting.

Personal URL You can adjust your LinkedIn URL to something simpler and put it on your CV. Employers can look you up if they want more information. Making your URL personal increases your chance to be found.

Headline Make sure your expertise is in there and recognizable, but keep your headline short and concise. Make it googlable.

Did you know: You can export your LinkedIn profile and use it as your CV Summary This one too should be short and concise. It can be the same as the pitch you are going to give about yourself in a job interview.

Make it personal and avoid using general expressions like ‘I am creative’. Instead name things that distinguish you from the masses.

Education and work experience Look at the relevance of the information, when you add experiences. With small jobs which you did when you was a teenager it is possible that they are not relevant anymore when you are looking for a job at the moment.

Do not only put the job title, but give a short explanation of the function you had and tell what your responsibilities were. Add interesting projects to show what you have been working on.

People can write recommendations on your LinkedIn page, there is no shame on asking for it. But be sure to ask it right after finished at the job or with the project.

Skills Be critical in what skills you put here. Keep it between the ten and fifteen skills and rather take the ones that characterize you.

Everyone probably knows that when you say you are from the Netherlands, you can speak Dutch, so it is not really necessary to put that as a skill. Keep the endorsing of skills of other people spontaneous, do not just help your friends but keep it honest.

Networks Be active in some groups of your interest, it makes you visible to other people. You can connect all those people, but it is not mandatory. When you get an invitation for a connection and are interested but rather not connect, send a short message so you will stay in the ‘good grace’ of him or her.

When you send out a connection request, add also a message, this will make it more personal and people are more willing to accept.

For making your CV it is almost the same as your LinkedIn account, but more compact.

You can mention your LinkedIn link on your CV and put only the important things for the job you are applying for on your CV. It gives your CV a cleaner look, which reflects on yourself.

Construction Site Visit Spoorzone Eindhoven A group of students visited the construction site of Spoorzone on Strijp-S. These 3 building blocks provide sufficient apartments, of which block 59 protrudes above the rest with a height of 70 meters.

The visit to the construction site of Stam + De Koning began with a presentation about the project by Stijn van Schaijk en Martijn Timmermans.

In the construction shed at the building site, Stijn van Schaijk began with a presentation about the umbrella company where Stam + De Koning is part of, VolkerWessels. In total, VolkerWessels has 15,000 employees distributed over 120 subsidiaries. The strength of this organization is that each subsidiary has its own identity, specialty and brand awereness in the region.

Stam + De Koning This company is a subsidiary of VolkerWessels with 150 employees. In addition to constructing projects, they also focus on the period after the completion of a project. This is done with the so-called Coffee & Tools bus. This bus will be placed on the project after completion. Here the residents can rent or buy tools and equipment. The first ten visits can borrow free equipment. This bus also includes employees with technical knowledge, which can help restore points of interest

Spoorzone BIM was used during this project. This ensures that all parties can match and measure their components with respect to each other. Stijn van Schaijk showed this during the tour on the construction site.

He had a tablet with the BIM model, here you could see all the points we walked by perfectly.

Spoorzone is made up of 3 blocks: block 59, block 61 and block 63. Block 63 has already been completed and block 61 will be finished soon. There are 355

apartments in total. Block 59 has 156 apartments, block 61 98 apartments and block 63 101 apartments. Behind these 3 buildings, a parking garage has been created with space for 600 cars. The parking space is not reached here, which is also not necessary. Analysis showed that a large number of the new residents have no car at their disposal. A parking space in the garage can be rented or purchased.

Blok 63 Block 63 is consists of 101 lofts, of which 54 times owner-occupied property and 47 times rental housing. The building is made up of lime sandstone and wide slab flooring. The height of the building is near the maximum that can be realized with this structure. Masonry, aluminum frames and steel balconies form the faรงade of the building. Aluminum frames have been chosen to emphasize the industrial character. The bathrooms have been slide inside as prefab boxes. The floor height is 3.20 meters. The balconies are one meter higher than the floor in the apartments which leads to a staircase in the living room. The balconies are attached to a steel structure running through the cavity wall.

Blok 61 Block 61 consists of 98 lofts which are all rental apartments. The wall structure is the

same as block 63 with lime sandstone and wide-slab floors. The biggest difference is that prefab concrete balconies have been used here. The support structure is made by 300mm thick bearing concrete walls. Further there is more variation in the floorplans than at block 63. The floor height is also 3.20 meters. Because this is full rental, the corporation has invested more money in the interior square. The entire interior area is blue-colored with a few trees in the middle.

A look inside the appartments

Blok 59 Block 59 has 156 apartments and goes up to a height of 70 meters. This building will complement the skyline of Eindhoven.

The floor height is 2.90 meters. The apartments in this building are also all rental apartments. The wall is made of prefabricated walls with wide-slab floors.

Here again the same materials are used for the facade as with the other two blocks, which creates a uniform appearance. The different buildings, however, hold their own

character through the different colors of bricks used.

The top 3 layers are formed by penthouses.

Here the number of apartments per floor reduces from 6 to 4. The penthouses do not have a balcony but a logia with regards to the wind comfort.

Parking garage The parking garage is made up of a steel structure. Hollow core slabs with a span of 16 meters are applied. On the ground floor 355 storages are realized, with 600 parking spaces on the floors above. The parking garage has a closed façade, which has a soundproofing function.

Active Members Activity Laser gaming

As a way to thank the active members who helped the study association throughout the year, an activity was organized. Starting with pizza before heading to the small forest at the sports center on the campus.

The activity was a secret till the very last moment. Arriving at the location nothing was yet to see. When the doors of the company van opened, the activity became clear: laser gaming.

Teams of four persons were created before starting the tournament. Everyone played fanatic and even crawled through the nettles.

Each team member started with 10 lives, with the round ending if one team was out of lives. To prevent getting hit, some smart moves were used. For example the tournament winners used a beach bed, found in the forest, as a shield.

Former Boards BBQ Meeting up with former SUPport boards

Once a year the Former Board Barbecue is organized. After the research for the exhibition in the lustrumweek, a lot of names of the former boards were known.

Via LinkedIn these members were contacted.

This method was succesful. Board members from years and years back were present.

Robert Lamping set the record as a member of the 9th board of SUPport.

With enough food and drinks this evening was a nice event with lots of stories about the history of SUPport.

Introduction Certificate programs

SUPport provides two Certificate Programs in the Master’s curriculum.

Each certificate is built up of three courses, each yielding 5 ects. In this section of the SUPporter, an overview will be provided on the courses educated in the third and fourth quartile of this academic year, which are part of these certificates.

Building Technology The certificate Building Technology facilitates a program that enable the Built Environment students from all disciplines to obtain knowledge, insights and skills related to the state of the art theories about advanced technological innovations and methods to create future friendly and healthy buildings. Next to the research and design skills, this certificate program emphasizes the importance of an integrated approach for engineering and making of these innovative building products and concepts.

In the third quartile, the course Building Methodology and Technology was educated.

In this course, each group of students focused on a different method on adapting a residential building. Each group elaborated their results and conclusions in a report, which altogether result in a complete booklet. In the fourth quartile, the course Building Technology with Extreme complexity was provided.

Construction Technology The Construction Technology certificate focuses on independently designing and developing production processes for the construction of buildings by using materials, equipment and labour as optimal as possible. Subjects which will be discussed regard, data for the management, relations subcontractor and customer, purchase (function) of the contracting firm, the builder’s specifications and the branch models for electronic communication.

In the third quartile, the course Construction Research Skills in the Built Environment was educated. In this course groups of students posed a viewpoint on the statement “PPVC (Prefinished Prefabricated Volumetric Components) is a logical next step in prefabrication”.

This viewpoint needs to be supported with arguments obtained via a case study. In the fourth quartile, the course Innovation on Site was provided. In this project, groups of students are asked to find innovative solutions for problems that occur on the construction site. To be able to make a good problem analysis, students first spend a full week on the construction site, in which the building process will be explained in detail.

Results of all four courses are provided in the next pages of this section.

Masterclass Bouwend Nederland Innovation The master class of Bouwend Nederland was held on Wednesday evening 31 May. On this evening, 3 speakers were invited to tell their story about their projects and activities. The master class took place at the TU/e campus in the Auditorium building.

The evening was opened by Terry Knibbe, chairman of the study association SUPport.

He mentioned the certificate programs of Construction Technology and Building Technology. The final projects of these certificate programs were highlighted.

The DIY Homes for New Dutchies project, described in the previous SUPporter, and Innovation on Site, to be read in this edition, were mentioned with their advantages for students.

Arno Pronk did his master class on the material ice. He spoke of global warming with the conclusion that one of the biggest problems is the increasing population.

Mankind must eventually seek new places to live. Pronk drew up the NASA project,

where a 3D-printed complex made out of ice is placed on Mars. Although this is still futuristic, Pronk himself is busy with the material ice. Thus, several splendid buildings have been made in. Together with students, the highest tower and largest igloo were realized in reinforced ice. The reinforcement was constructed with wood fibres, however this material resulted in a brownish color. So now the research is on reinforcing with paper, which maintains the white color.

The second speaker was Leonie van Buuren about her PDEng project ‘The Empathetic Living Environment’. The empathic living environment is an environment that the user understands and broadcasts signals

that support you to live as you please.

Van Buuren finished with a brainstorming session, where the audience had the opportunity to share their vision on empathetic living environments.

The last speaker was Rob Wolfs about the 3D printing of concrete. The entire process of establishing the 3D-printer at TU/e was described. Different students graduate on this topic and help to improve the printer.

All those projects combined with material tests have led to a numerical model.

This model can be helpful for designing 3D-printed structures.

Building Methodology and Technology Certificate program Building Design and Technology The course 7KP8M0 – Building Methodology and Technology is offered by the Unit Architectural Urban Design and Engineering of the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology. The course is taken care of by responsible l ec t urer p ro f. d r.ir. M. (Masi) Mohammadi, co-lecturer ir. K. (Kristel) Hermans and PDEng trainee ir. M.H. (Marije) Kortekaas.

The course aims at expanding the intellectual horizon of students regarding building methods and technological possibilities.

The course is one of the three components of the certificate Building Design and Technology, next to the other course and project: -7KP9M0 – Building Technology with Extreme Complexity (5 ECTS) -7KS1M0 – Master project Building Technology (5 ECTS) Technology plays a significant role in the design, the construction and the functioning of our buildings. This course aims at expanding the intellectual horizon of students regarding building methods and technological possibilities. To achieve the objectives of this course, the theoretical approaches and building principles are reinforced by the knowledge of the latest technologies applied in the field of building engineering. These theoretical and practical approaches and principles are outlined

Every year, a new and challenging location is chosen. This year, the course was organised around a 1970s apartment building for seniors of housing association Domus in Roermond. The goal of the

The research was structured by dividing all the students into groups that had their own specific research subject within the assignment. The groups focussed on these six subjects; Group1. Functionality – existing building This group researched how the existing structure could be used as a sustainable senior complex. Their focus was mainly on how to renovate within the existing structural system and how this would be functional.

Group 2. Functionality – new building This research was also focussed on how functional properties like accessibility and social safety are influenced by the building, but now for a complete new building.

Group 3. Sustainability & comfort – low tech This group did a research on how low tech technologies can be made ‘smart’ to be able to implement them to the existing building and make it sustainable this way.

Group 4. Sustainability & comfort – high tech This group did a research on how high tech solutions can be implemented in the existing building, or new building, to make it sustainable and comfortable.

Group 5. Technological innovations regarding care, comfort and safety Group five did their research on different technological innovations regarding care, comfort and safety like monitoring sleep patterns or the acceptance of elderly of different technologies.

Group 6. Appearance and future extension The last group did their research on how the existing building can be renovated and extended in height using different types of construction materials like steel or wood.

These subjects together form a booklet and movie clip with the first recommendations for housing association Domus.

Marije Kortekaas will elaborate further on this research to answer her main research question: “By means of which technical, spatial and social methods can this residential building enhance sustainability on both energetic as empathetic level?”

Construction Research Skills Modular building The second course of the certificate program of Construction Technology is Construction Research Skills in the Built Environment.

Until a couple of decades ago, most buildings were built in the traditional way, meaning that they were fully built on site. Since that moment, increasing amounts of the production process moved towards the factory. In the factory, building elements were produced and transported to the site afterwards. This trend goes along with the industrialization. The main reason for this is the significant number of advantages for prefabrication, with the main advantage of controlled working conditions in a factory. One step further on the prefabrication of elements, is the prefabrication and prefinishing of entire building components. This building method is called Precast Prefinished Volumetric Components (PPVC). These components have been entirely finished in the factory including finishing layers and MEP. After that, the components are transported to the construction site, where they are positioned in place and connected to each other.

The student’s assignment in this course is to discuss and pose an opinion on the statement: “PPVC is a logical next step in the development of advanced precast, independent on the site conditions”.

Students worked in groups of two to four students. The result of the course is a paper in which the opinion is explained on several aspects, such as automation on site, safety and sustainability, based on a case study.

Besides the report, the core of the results was illustrated in a pitch. An overview of the research and conclusions of some of the groups are given below.

Example of a PPVC-system

Arvin van Heest, Pieter van Nunen, Nick van de Werdt The approach we took was a quite rational approach as we analyzed all elements that are embodied with the concept of PPVC; prefabrication, automation, transport, BIM, sustainability, LEAN and safety/health. In this analysis one important element came forward clearly: the transportation of the PPVC is of great importance as in the traditional PPVC, large amounts of air are transported. This has a negative effect on the efficiency, as fewer elements can be transported at once. That is why a new kind of PPVC is proposed; flat-packed PPVC. In this new method, elements are produced in factories overseas, transported to a nearby location where the building will be built, it is put together with the transported elements and then assembled on site. In this method the amount of air transported is drastically reduced which will lead to higher sustainability and better efficiency.

Niek van Hove, Terry Knibbe, Rick van Loon, Kay Sanders The group approached the assignment by studying a case on timber PPVC modules.

This system was compared to traditional structural timber and prefabricated timber elements. Regarding all relevant aspects, the following statement was posed: “PPVC is suitable for buildings, dependent on the site conditions, with a high repetition, where the end-user has a limited influence on the design process”. One of the most important arguments supporting this statement is the fact that not every construction site is accessible for special transportation.

Besides that, a high repetition of elements will create opportunities to automate the off-site production process. Finally, The end-user can choose between different options, but major adjustments are not possible; the method of prefabricated elements would be more affordable in that case.

Example of a PPVC-system

Britt Cordewener, Tom Penninx Regarding the thesis whether PPVC is the logical next step in the development of advance precast & independent of the (building) site conditions, we state that PPVC indeed can be, however, the suitability of this construction method is strongly dependent of the building site and project conditions. By evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of PPVC a conclusion is drawn on the project and site conditions for which the application of PPVC suits best. Since the field of application of PPVC is than still very broad, the application of PPVC is evaluated compared to the most used conventional construction method for a specific construction field for which its application is eminently amenable. The advantages of PPVC suit the construction field of vertical extension very well and with the current urbanization trend, this could be a very promising field of application.

Therefore, PPVC and the currently most applied construction method in vertical extension, with Steel Frame Elements, are evaluated regarding various subthemes.

The limited space necessary on the building site combined with the lower nuisance level and lower safety risks by spending limited time on the site is a great advancement of PPVC. Because of this it is concluded that Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Components can be the next logical step in vertical extension of buildings.

Jemima Klaassen, Renee van der Wurff Another group made an analysis of promising construction technologies; prefabrication, prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) and threedimensional concrete printing (3DCP).

Evaluating these technologies along the criteria of time, costs, sustainability issues, safety, development and design related subjects reveals that the trend for off-site construction is dominating. It can be concluded that PPVC has a strong foothold in the future of prefabricated builds. It is an important step to modernise the industry.

However, to further its applicational usage, a simple standard for a modular system must be developed, providing an optimal implementation of the trade-off between flexibility and standardisation.

This conclusion ties in to the hypothesis: that the future of the building lies with the development of simple, flexible techniques, providing an ease of use and a most favourable configuration of the mentioned aspects.

From the results of the groups described above, it can be concluded that the groups approached the assignment in a different way leading to different results, although they all started with the same assignment.

Innovation on Site

Masterproject Construction Technology 7RC50 Innovation on Site has been and still is a showpiece of how to implement the workfield of the Built Environment into University education. This year with a new supervisor and responsible lecturer, Arno Pronk, who has lots of experience with both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the construction technology. This year we are more than satisfied with the number of 5 companies, who have provide interesting construction sites with even more interesting problems or challenges.

In this article one can find a short description of all the nine groups.

Five groups have been able to attend the course Innovation on Site 2017. After a turbelent period, now the building environment is raising faster than ever and due to a combination of circumsyances, companies a lot of companies were not able to participate the project this year.

Therefore, it was hard to be able to have five companies providing decent challenges for our students to analyse.

But luckily for us, as every year, Bouwend Nederland, has assisted us in providing the five construction sites, and collecting a

proper jury. In this jury, the years chairman, Rick van Heumen, director of Bouw en Vastgoedontwikkeling Hurks, was able to lead the jury as a true expert. Joep Rats, director of Economy and Association Affairs of Bouwend Nederland, will be able to give very good remarks. As an expert on construction and development, Arno van der Heijden, was also part of the jury and focussed in judging the groups more on his practical profession. To make a complete

jury, Hans Lamers, the true backbone of the TU/e laboratory and not restrained in commenting on students, now will be part of the jury as well.

The five groups will have their final presentation on the 21th of June, after which the jury will retreat for delibration.

Efficient use of space on-site Dura Vermeer | Breda Vooruit For the practical assignment of the course Innovation On Site, we as Group 1 are connected to Dura Vermeer. They came with a problem for their project ‘Breda Vooruit’.

Shortly said, the construction site is too small for realizing a traditional process. Their question for us, is to find out how to deal with this problem during the executional phase of the project.

The project ‘Breda Vooruit’ is split into three separate building blocks. Block A and B are completed and people already have settled in. The construction phase of block C is expected to start in September 2017 and is the last section of the overall project. Block C consists of 52 apartments and four commercial units.

One of these units closes the total ribbon of building blocks and is faced towards the entrance of the central station area of Breda. Also adjacent to ‘Breda Vooruit’ is the residential area Belcrum. Because this project is an inner city development: stakeholder management, area restrictions and logistical problems should be taken care of on beforehand.

The available buffer on site can be described as to which extend materials can be stored on the building site. The problems faced at the Breda Vooruit project start at the point where all large material flows come together and exceed the restricted maximum buffer size. Dura Vermeer has learned from experience that ideally a twoweek buffer size is maintained throughout the project; this means two weeks of building materials should be stored on site at all times during the built. When all

building flows come together, this two-week buffer size becomes compromised. In order to solve this problem there are two possible types of solutions: Arrange more storage space to restore the compromised buffer size and allow for a smaller buffer size by increasing amount of deliveries to site.

Buffer size can be increased by changing the building sequence. The standard way of building is to erect the whole building from ground level up. This means that during the whole build the plot of the building will be unavailable for storage. The sequence can be changed in such a way that first part A of the building is erected and subsequently part B. In this case the plot of part B will be available for storage during the build of part A. This procedure is possible because the constructional cut lies at the division between part A and B. Also the crane road at part B can be used as an additional storage area during the building of part A since the crane does not have to move to part B during the construction of A. and vice versa the crane lane at part A can be used while building part B. The bottleneck in this solution will be when part B is build and all building flows are required similarly.

Whether this solution can provide a total

solution to the problem will stand or fall with whether the gained crane-lane storage area at A will suffice in maintaining the storage buffer.

Another solution is the method of using a storage hub as buffer for stored building materials or part of the buffer moves to a location close by the building site. Suppliers can deliver the building materials at this storage hub. When adopting this solution Dura Vermeer allows for a smaller buffer size on site by ensuring a larger buffer close by. Advantages of this solution are the fact that the buffer problem can be solved and the controllability of traffic towards the building site increases. A disadvantage of using a storage hub are the additional costs for renting the facility. Another disadvantage of this solution is that building materials still need to be transferred from the hub to the building site. However, this type of transport generally carries less risks than opting for a Just-In-Time delivery from all suppliers.

Automated Production Process GEELEN BETON | Wanssum

pipelines, reinforcement and window frames are placed and finally the concrete is poured. In large climate conditioned rooms, the tables are stored for 1 day for allowing the concrete to harden until it can be stripped and transported or stored.

At the production facility of Geelen Beton, a family business in concrete elements located in Wanssum - Limburg, concrete wall elements are prefabricated.

Recently, the production process has been automated partly by implementing a carousel system.

Within this production process, workers remain stationary, while products / formwork ‘tables’ move through the different stages within the manufacturing area.

At the first stage of the carousel system, a robot places the magnetic formwork on the steel formwork/working tables, places magnets at locations for connection of the services and draws locations for the window frames. In the next stages, at which the table stays for 15 minutes, services,

Beside the advantages regarding production time, labor and safety risks, the production process allows for extensive optimization of the reinforcement in the prefab walls.

This result in walls which contain only a very limited amount of reinforcement. With this, a problem occurs, since PVC pipelines for the electric services are usually kept on place by the reinforcement. Due to Archimedes law and the large difference in density of the applied self-compacting concrete, the pipelines float up to the surface of the concrete wall, which of course is not desirable & acceptable.

In this project, the problem of the floating pipelines is researched it is tried to find a solution for the issue. Therefore first the approximate buoyancy force is determined based on the pipelines and self-compacting concrete used by Geelen Beton. It is demonstrated that for the applied pipelines with a mean diameter of 19 mm and a density of the applied concrete of 2400 kg/m 3 , the buoyancy force will be approximately 7 N/m To restrain the pipelines from floating due to this upward load, several solutions are generated during a brainstorm session and potential solutions are evaluated theoretically as well as practically.

Several

solution strategies are investigated:

An alternative for the integration of the services in the concrete walls can be applied in the form of a covered services conduit which is concealed behind the baseboard; ■ A change in the production process, by pouring the concrete in two phases, may cause the pipelines to float on the concrete poured in the first phase, but since the self-compaction concrete sets quickly, the pipelines will attach to this first poured layer while the second layer of concrete is poured.

The adhesion of the pipelines to the first poured layer will in this case resist the buoyancy force; ■ The pipelines can be temporarily filled with a material of which the gravitational force will counter the buoyancy force. This can be done the easiest with the help of a heavy, but flexible draw wire, which is normally used by electricians to route new wiring trough electrical conduits. The weight of draw wire must at least be equal to the buoyancy force.

■ Finally, the pipelines can be held on place by positioners. The can be applied in different forms with different methods” ■ Since a steel formwork table is used, magnetic positioners would be easy to apply. Small magnets with very high pulling forces are available, the limited shear capacity of the magnets should be kept in mind.

■ The pipelines can also be kept on place by using concrete prefabricated elements which are either placed over the pipelines or in which a PVC clamp is poured.

■

The above solutions are investigated further by testing them within the production carousel of Geelen Beton in Wanssum.

The results prove that several solutions definitely have potential to improve the current production process, however, more testing will be needed in order to be able to implement the solutions.

Renovation Office Building Construction companies Jongen Landgraaf budget. The building in Landgraaf consists of three stories, with two building parts at ground floor and first floor. Using the list of employees it was possible to make a clear overview of the amount of employees per sub-division and the ratio between full-time and part-time jobs.

Construction companies Jongen, which is a subsidiary of VolkerWessels, mainly operates in Limburg.

The company has three offices; Landgraaf, Roermond, and Venlo.

Because of reorganization, the office in Roermond closes, meaning that the staff is being relocated to either Landgraaf or Venlo. The topic of this project is to make a plan for the reorganization of the office in Landgraaf. This project includes four main aspects; orientation, setting requirements, designing and advising.

Currently in the office in Landgraaf, about 90 employees are housed. After reorganization, this number is increased up to 130.

At the moment, the office in Landgraaf is a very traditional one. The layout of the building mainly consists of separate rooms, with a spacious layout of the individual offices. This results in an inefficient way of area usage. Two other disadvantages of the current situation are the very limited amount of daylight inside the building and the lack of sufficient contact between employees.

With the obtained information, the students first create different variants of zonings for the building. Each zone consists of a subdivision of the company (e.g. calculation, project management, etc.). This part of the assignment resulted in four zonings, each based on a different concept. The first variant is based on the working process of Jongen, in which the related sub-divisions are positioned close to each other. In the second variant, attention is paid to a limited rehousing i.e. maintain the current zoning mainly. In the third option, each ‘part’ of the building represents the branches of the company; Residential, Utility, and Maintenance & Renovation. The last variant focuses on a compact building, with the key divisions located centrally in the building, and supporting divisions, more to the edge of the building. In cooperation with the company, a definitive zoning was determined. This turned out to be a combination of limited rehousing and separating branches. The rapid choice for the zoning was due to the fact the management of Jongen decided to rehouse before the summer holiday.

It is the students’ task to first gather information about the company and the way of working. This also includes visiting all three offices. The office in Venlo can be seen as an ideal situation, but this cannot be achieved entirely due to the limited

After determining the definitive variant, different floor plans for the building can be worked out into detail. In these detailed floor plans, the main distinction is made in the extent of the renovation corresponding to the extent of costs. In two variants, only non-load bearing walls are removed or replaced. In three other variants, more ideal situations are obtained leading to more radically adaptations of the building. The concept of these options is to introduces more flex spaces and to create a more open structure of the building. Next to these variants, also proposals are made for renovation of the building which are optional extensions of the variants. This includes for example the placing of roof skylights for the increase of daylight in the building.

This finally results in a combination of the best options which are worked out into elaborate floor plans and spatial impressions. The final step of the assignment is giving an advice to the company.

Crunching the schedule

Timmermans Mobilis, TBI | Central Station Maastricht

Construction site bicycle cellar near CS Maastricht

For this project, the case of the development of the underground bicycle cellar near the Central Station of Maastricht is used. The cellar will facilitate space for over 2800 bicycles and 40 scooters.

The bicycle cellar will be finished including MEP, interior finishing and a tapis roulants. TBI takes care of the development of the cellar in Maastricht. The planned finishing date is fixed at September 1st, 2017.

Due to several circumstances in the first period of the construction phase, a delay of over eight weeks on the planning was caused. The project team asked to map and list the bottlenecks and risks of the finishing phase of the construction. The results of this should be processed into a robust yet realistic planning in which a buffer of three weeks is used. In this way, the project team can implement the suggested ideas. Next to that, feasibility is an important point of attention. The main goals is to deliver a plan which is as realistic as possible, in order for TBI to actually use it.

For the reduction of the caused delay, several aspects were examined. The critical path in the planning is the most important aspect since reduction of the construction time is only possible when one or multiple activities on site lead to an early date of finishing. At first it is not necessary to save time on activities which are not part of the critical path, because they do not affect the finishing date. However, the critical path

can move when time is saved on activities which are on the critical path. After each change in the planning, it is important to critically examine the consequences for the critical path.

In order to speed up construction activities, in the new planning phases are used.

The activities in the cellar are divided into segments. Using MS-Project, it was also possible to take a critical look into the planning. By analyzing this planning, certain construction activities could be removed, changed, or added. Also, the links between the activities are checked.

In the next step, the critical path is taken into account. The activities in the scooter section of the building turned out to be in the critical path. When the grid lines are moved from segment two to beyond the scooter space, the finishing phase can initiate earlier, which leads to a reduction of two to three weeks in time.

The additional advantage of moving the grid line of segment two, which increases the size of segment two, is that a temporary walkway can be placed which secures the accessibility of the station.

The next adaptation that was made, is to combine segments 3 and 4. When segments 3 and 4 are poured at the same time, the activities underneath these segments can initiate about 4 weeks earlier. Initially, the choice for two separate segments was made because of accessibility reasons for the central station. By means of a bridge on a rails,

which already was in place, the bridge can be moved between segments within a couple of hours. This also guarantees the accessibility of the station.

Exceeding the set finishing date, comes with extra costs. When the proposed adaptations are implemented, the new finishing date will be September 9th. To reduce this date even further, there is the option to increase the size of the team.

Increasing the size of the team will speed up some activities. This increase will require an investment, but at the same time it will save additional costs. The final finishing date of the construction activities after implementing this proposal, is August 29th, 2017. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the aim of the case is achieved, the planning is reduced with 8 weeks.

Acoustic and movement challenges Van Wijnen | Atlas Building TU/e

The mainbuilding of the TU/e is currently being renovated to an all new building named Atlas, which should reach a BREEAM label of Outstanding. In the existing structure, steel girders form intermediate floor in between concrete floors. This intermediate floor shows to contain some challenges in the renovation, as the steel girders are being reused.

After a tender competition, van Wijnen was awarded the project, which meant van Wijnen first had to take the design of Team RSVP, the design team of the TU/e and translate it to a construction design.

In this translation, van Wijnen came upon some problems concerning the connection between intermediate floor and façade, namely the acoustical quality of this connection was not sufficient and the movement of the façade was not taken into account, as the façade is not connected to the intermediate floor.

After analyzing all different problems that could be found in the Definitive Design, we analyzed all solutions van Wijnen had in mind for the problems. The four problems and their solutions are; 1. Connection between intermediate floor and façade, 2.

Connection façade to separation wall, 3.

Connection intermediate floor to separation wall and 4. Openings in intermediate floor

In short, the main problem in problem 1 and 2 is that the movement of the façade needs to be taken into account and this means a connection is needed that allows movement whilst ensuring a good acoustical connection. Van Wijnen came with the solution of sliding planks, underneath the floor and ceiling to allow movement, and insulation between the planks to ensure acoustical insulation, for problem 1. (figure 1) For problem 2 they came with the idea of wrap the IPEs of the façade in insulation, closing it up with two steel U profiles. In problem 3 they needed to solve contact sound through the floor from room to room, which was possibly solved with a dilation in the floor. And in problem 4 the openings of the floor proved to be leaks for sound, so this needed attention as well.

Solution van Wijnen for problem

In the end we analysed all problems thoroughly and concluded that especially problem 1 and the solution of van Wijnen for problem 1 needed more attention. The other solution of van Wijnen are sufficient and can only be optimized minimally.

As solution for problem 1 we came up with two solutions; 1. Frame and 2. Box. In solution 1 the sliding planks are replaced with two beams and two steel U-profiles with insulation in between. (figure 2) This connection proves to work, as the construction order works better than of the sliding planks. This connection in material is a little bit more expensive but this will be won back because the way lower amount of assembly time needed for this connection. In solution 2 the sliding planks are replaced by a single box that slides underneath the floor and above the ceiling. (figure 3) With this box three steps are taken into one but the box proves to be hard to install. In costs it is similar to the sliding plank solution but it again takes less time to install.

In the end we have concluded solution 1 is best for the situation as it will give profit in the end, whilst ensuring a good and makeable connection. All solutions eventually need to be tested on site, to make sure all connection meet the requirements, so a conclusion can made on how to build the rest of the building.

Graduation

Fast hardening concrete for 3D concrete printing allows the printer to extrude a wide variety of shapes within the plane parallel to the print surface. At the end of the printer head the material is extruded through a nozzle.

The shape of the extrusion can be altered by changing the nozzle. Most of the time a stainless steel nozzle is used, but also plastic 3D printed nozzles can be used.

Graduation Structure

My name is Lex Hermens and I’m a student for almost 6 years now. This year I gave myself a challenge by joining the board of SUPport while starting my graduation project at the same time. It has been a really busy year so far, but I’ve certainly never regretted this decision.

The differences between being in the board of a study association and being a graduation student are huge, but both are equally interesting and useful. Combining the two has been stressful at times, but mostly a lot of fun. In the coming pages I will tell something about my graduation project; fast hardening concrete for 3D concrete printing.

My graduation project is part of a larger research project that takes place at the faculty of the built environment which started in September 2015. Several graduation projects and 2 PhD projects run simultaneously, with as common goal the development of a 3D concrete printer (3DCP). The printer is located in the structural design lab in Vertigo and has 3 main components, a mixer-pump system, a control unit and a gantry robot. The mixerpump system continuously mixes cement with water and forces the mix through a hose under pressure. The hose is connected to the printer head, which is attached to the gantry-system. The gantry-system has 4 degrees of freedom, which means the printer head can be moved in x, y and z direction and rotate along the z-axis. This

Graduating within the 3DCP group is quite different than other graduation projects within the chair of structural design.

Unlike most structural design projects 3DCP works with a studio structure. All individual graduation projects can roughly be categorized in two types of research, material research and form and material optimization research (FAMO). The material research focusses on understanding the printed material in terms of strength properties. This is a challenging task, because most standard Eurocode test procedures can’t be applied to printed concrete. This means that new test setups have to be designed in order to properly investigate the properties of printed concrete. FAMO research focusses on using the possibilities the printer offers to its maximum. One of the biggest advantages printing concrete is that formwork is not needed and that material can be placed wherever it is needed most. This opens up possibilities to manufacture structures with an optimized form and an efficient material distribution. FAMO research tries to find a

balance between these optimized forms and the capabilities of the printer.

Once every 2 week all FAMO graduation students have a studio meeting . These meetings are also attended by students not involved in 3DCP. Purpose of the meetings is to share knowledge, for example about software programs that can be used as optimization tool. Once every month a 3DCP studio meeting takes place. Here all progress of the individual projects within 3DCP is discussed. Almost every week print sessions take place in the structural lab in Vertigo. These print sessions are used to print test samples, test out new printing strategies or for manufacturing objects for external parties. 3 or 4 people are needed for a print session so every 3DCP graduation student needs to help printing every once in a while. This certainly isn’t wasted time, because carrying out an actual print is very educational in terms of understanding the material and the print process.

My topic of research within 3DCP is fast hardening concrete. Accelerating the hardening process of the printed concrete will increase the strength of the material in the early stages after printing. This can be very beneficial for the printing process, because the stability of freshly printed structures often is a limitation.

the tubes. A wooden box is placed above the sample, this box can also freely move along the direction of the tubes. Load is applied on the sample by filling the box with sand via the funnel that is place at the top of the test setup. The applied load can be measured by a load meter underneath the sample. The displacement of the box, and therefore the displacement of the sample, is also measured. This provides enough data to plot a strength-displacement curve of every sample that is tested.

increase the stability of structures during printing, which leads to either more design freedom or the capability to print faster. Speeding up the hardening also has a potential downside, namely that the tensile bond strength between two layers of printed concrete could decrease.

Investigating the relation between an increased early strength development and the decreased bond strength between layers this potentially causes is what I focus on with my graduation project.

Increasing the temperature of concrete is

the most straightforward way to accelerate the hardening process of concrete. That is why Investigating and quantifying the influence of temperature on the strength development of printed concrete is the first step in my graduation project. To do this, I used a test setup that goes by the unofficial name of ‘sandbox test setup’, which was developed last year for 3DCP. It works as follows. fresh concrete is casted in a cylindrical mould and placed in the testsetup. The sample is placed on a wooden plate which is fixed with four tubes. The plate can freely move in the direction of

Currently I tested nearly 100 of these samples, varying in time of testing (15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after mixing) and water temperature while mixing (5, 20 and 80 °C). I am still processing the results of these tests, but it looks like colder temperatures decrease the early strength of concrete significantly. Warm temperatures seem to influence the strength development positively, but only after 30 minutes. Another method to influence the hardening process of concrete is the use of admixtures. Admixtures are substances that can be added to a concrete mix to change its properties. Accelerating admixtures reduce the setting time and/or increase the strength development of concrete.

Exploring the influence of these admixtures, in combination with temperature, on the hardening process of printed concrete is the next step for my graduation project.

In the meantime a printing strategy is developed to actually print with elevated temperatures, and admixtures. Once this strategy is developed enough, samples can be printed that can be used to test the influence of hardening time on the bond strength between layers when fully hardened. This can be tensile tests or flexural tests. It is also a possibility to make a simulation of these tests using a numeric software model.

This is roughly the outline of my graduation project so far and of what is still to come.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but I am looking forward to discover new results that can help the 3DCP project forward. I hope to be graduated by the end of 2017.

Career Start After graduation and a very appreciated and -as every young professional may rightly say- well deserved recreation period, I started working as a site engineer at the building site of the project Mariënburg in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Our family construction company aannemersbedrijf M.P. Drijvers B.V. was in need of labour forces for this project, which for me was a chance to work on a unique renovation project in the heart of the city, and besides consider what my next career step would be. The Mariënburg is an old monastery building, which is now being renovated into a brand new high tech campus building, in which the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is located, along with student housing and various shared facilities. In the former monastery the study Big Data Science and Entrepreneurship will be educated. In this vibrant ecosystem students, companies and incubators can work together in a highly inspiring environment.

As been said, I also had the chance to consider where I wanted to direct to next.

During my master I already orientated on job potentials and hereby focussed on various construction companies, in particular the ones offering a management traineeship. One thing was very clear to me: I wanted to learn as much as possible and further develop myself in an environment that is most suitable for it. With this in mind, I initiated interviews with companies I became acquainted with as Commissioner of Public Relations in the board of Study Association SUPport, and also was approached by a few recruiters. After some pleasant interviews two companies remained with which I felt there was a mutual interest. Despite the attracting economy and increasing activity

in the building industry, this felt as a true luxury, but it did not make the decision any easier! Should I go for a management traineeship in a construction company, which I had been focussing on for the last one and a half years of my study; or should I take a leap and go for a real estate company, something I did not ever consider before.

In the end, I decided Coebax Groep B.V. would be the right place to start my career.

Before I explain my decision for Coebax Groep, let me first explain what the company stands for and how it is organized.

During these few months I have been working on making a construction planning, designing a site plan, keeping track of the hour registration, measuring and mapping old window frames, and various small other tasks. Working at the building site was disenchanting and refreshing, considering the period I have solely been writing my graduation thesis on the computer.

B.V.; a newly established company with a focus on housing elderly with a potential or actual need for care. The aging of our society, combined with rising national health care costs, led to an important transition in the Dutch care industry: the extramuralization of former nursing homes.

This extramuralization of care, created an upcoming shortage of suitable elderly housing. Livin Concepts acknowledges this newly created need and, in answer thereto, develops sustainable living environments for elderly with a need for psychogeriatric care. It does so, by providing an ecosystem suitable for providing small-scale organized care on a local scale. The majority of my time, I perform work for Livin Concepts, however I may also do all kind of other real estate related activities within Coebax Groep.

Alright, but how come someone so focussed on entering the construction industry decides to kick off in real estate? An important moment in this decision was the first interview with the CEO of the company, Wim Boers. During the conversation I was offered various functions I could fulfil. I felt comfortable and challenged by this and the impression was given I would land in an entrepreneurial environment by which I was able to rapidly develop. My personal development was a substantial part of the conversation. For example, the possibility of attending another master program was discussed; something I would gladly do in the near future. Furthermore, the building industry and real estate are inextricably connected. Gaining experience on the site of the contracting party seemed rather instructive.

So, what then do I do? Within my function as real estate researcher I may work on the development of the concept for elderly housing, in specific elderly with a potential or actual need for psychogeriatric care.

This is a challenging assignment in which concept development, product design, as well as practical feasibility come together.

Currently, we have just submitted our vision plan on the redevelopment of a number of monumental buildings in the village of Oisterwijk for the purpose of purchasing

these buildings and implementing our care concept. In the meantime, I may contribute to the elaboration of the concept in collaboration with an architect.

hope to do so, preferably combined with another relevant master program, for example in real estate, management or business administration.

Future Prospects

During the first interview was furthermore openly spoken about my plans after an employment at Coebax Groep; about my admiration to once work in our family company. The understanding for this was relieving. For now, I feel perfectly fine in the environment of Coebax Groep, however, although it may not exactly be clear when, it may be evident that I very much admire working at our family company once.

A university degree is an amazing starting point for any career. However, it is only a first step of the long journey of life. It is important to develop yourself, and to exploit your personal potential. In the near future I hope to make a substantial contribution to the promising care concept of Livin Concepts, and by this gain an amazing experience by the diverse aspects of this function. I hope to gain knowledge in the aspects of investing in, development, redevelopment and management of real estate properties, drawing up tenant contracts and maintaining contacts with various parties involved in the process. Architectuur Las Palmas is in 1953 gebouwd als werkplaatsengebouw voor de Holland Amerika Lijn, naar een ontwerp van de architecten Van den Broek en Bakema. Met zijn gevel van uiterst verfijnde schokbetonnen panelen straalt het een strakheid uit die kenmerkend is voor de Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Met de renovatie is het gebouw teruggebracht naar de staat waarin het was gebouwd. De robuuste betonconstructie met paddestoelkolommen bleef vrijwel in tact en de gevel werd in oude luister hersteld.

Doordat het nieuw toegevoegde Penthouse lijkt te zweven en door de ronde kanten zet het zich sterk af tegen de andere gebouwen op de pier.

De krachtige vorm compenseert het relatief kleine volume en maakt het eerder tot een gebaar dan een gebouw.

In het bestaande gebouw is het constructieve stramien van ongeveer 7,5 m verdeeld naar een driedeling in de gevel. In het Penthouse is diezelfde maat verdeeld in vier delen van 1,875 m, wat beter aansluit op huidige standaardafmetingen van bouwmaterialen en beukmaten van kantoorruimten. Bij de ronde koppen is het oorspronkelijke gevelstramien aangehouden. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat de straal van de ronding, en daarmee ook de hoogte van het Penthouse, afgeleiden zijn van het BOUWEN MET STAAL 199

horizon tale stramien van Las Palmas. De verdiepingsvloer ligt vanzelfsprekend op gelijke hoogte met het middelpunt van de cirkeluitsnede.

Het eenvoudige witte volume is bekleed met aluminium beplating.

De twaalf gebogen ramen in de koppen zijn 3,9 m lang en zijn daarmee de langste gekromde ruiten die tot nu toe in Europa zijn gemaakt.

Ze geven de bezoeker vanuit het Penthouse een gefragmenteerd beeld van zowel de straat als de omringende hoogbouw.

Er is zo helder mogelijk glas toegepast om goed aan te sluiten bij de openheid en lichtheid van het onderliggend gebouw. De vloerrand van de verdieping is afgedekt met hetzelfde glas en daardoor overdag niet zichtbaar in de gevelís. Avonds tekent de vloer zich donker af. Dan gaat de geïntegreerde verlichting op de vloerrand aan en is de noordgevel een tekst in morse-code te lezen: ‘penthouse las palmas’.

Het dak van het werkplaatsengebouw is vormgegeven als daktuin.

Het is daadwerkelijk een ‘vijfde gevel’, gezien vanuit de bestaande en toekomstige hoogbouw eromheen. Onder het Penthouse, op het dak van het werkplaatsengebouw, is het mogelijk met autoís te rijden.

Daarvoor is de oude goederenlift omgebouwd tot autolift.

Openbare gebouwen Bijzondere projecten Openbare gebouwen kenmerken zich vaak door hun unieke ‘programma van eisen’.

Daarnaast fungeren openbare gebouwen ook vaak als visiteplaatje van een stad. De functies van deze gebouwen kunnen ver uiteenlopen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een station of een stadhuis, maar ook aan een concertgebouw of museum.

In deze special komt een breed scala aan openbare gebouwen aan bod, variërend in omvang en functie. Daarnaast zal de focus per gebouw verschillen; bij enkele gebouwen is er een bijzonder element dat we belichten, bij andere gebouwen zal de focus juist liggen op het hele gebouw of het proces dat tijdens de bouw heeft plaatsgevonden.

Ook zullen we kijken naar een ‘nieuw type’ van openbaarheid, namelijk een gebouw dat openbaar is in de zin dat het deels door (een groep van) bewoners of gebruikers ontworpen kan worden, aan de hand van hun eigen wensen en eisen.

Topsportcentrum Nijmegen Gebouw voor talenten Op het sportpark ‘De Dennen’ in Nijmegen zal binnenkort begonnen worden aan de bouw van een nieuw topsportcentrum. De accommodatie zal plaats bieden aan talenten in de turnsport en in judo, maar zal daarnaast ook plaats bieden voor medische begeleiding en onderwijs. Maar dit is meer dan een sportaccommodatie; er zal in samenwerking met andere partijen op deze locatie ook sportinnovatie plaatsvinden, en talentontwikkeling. Om dit alles mogelijk te maken, is een goed gebouw nodig, dat voorziet in alle wensen van de vele partijen die er gebruik van gaan maken.

Het ontwerp Dat is ook waar LIAG architecten en bouwadviseurs voor gezorgd heeft. Na een ‘design and build’ aanbestedingsprocedure zijn zij geselecteerd om een passend ontwerp te maken. Door zijn ligging langs een toegangsweg naar Nijmegen, was de wens het gebouw een toegangspoort naar Nijmegen te laten zijn. Dit beeldbepalende karakter heeft geleid tot een fraai exterieur, te herkennen aan een aantal ‘zwevende’ gouden volumes boven een glazen plint.

Door te spelen met hoogteverschillen wordt aansluiting gezocht met de omliggende bebouwing en zijn directe omgeving.

Gebouw als ontmoetingsplek voor verschillende disciplines Het interieur is – anders dan zijn expressieve tegenhanger – juist warm en uitnodigend. Hiermee wordt geprobeerd interactie tussen verschillende disciplines te stimuleren, iets dat belangrijk is om te zorgen voor de gewenste innovatie die in het gebouw plaats kan vinden. Het centrale ontmoetingspunt als openbare ruimte in het gebouw zal zorgen dat deze dynamiek plaats kan vinden, en wordt daarom als een van de sterkste punten van het ontwerp gezien.

Musis Sacrum Arnhem Interview met architect en projectleider In het centrum van Arnhem is concertgebouw Musis gevestigd.

Het pand is gebouwd in 1947 en wordt momenteel gerenoveerd.

Sinds 1847 hebben zich zoveel activiteiten afgespeeld in en rond Musis Sacrum, dat het Musisgebied en het Musisgebouw een reeks van verschillende verschijningsvormen vertonen, voortgekomen uit verschillende eisen, door exploitanten, stadbestuurders en bewoners.

Architecten Van Dongen en Koschuch tekenden voor het ontwerp van het vernieuwde Musis. Een plint verbindt het historische deel van Musis met het nieuwe deel. Dit transparante ontwerp is geplaatst in de prachtige groene ruimte van het park aan de Lauwersgracht. Vanuit de nieuwe concertzaal kijkt men straks zo het park in. De uitbreiding wordt vormgegeven als een uitnodigend en alzijdig paviljoen in het park dat het bestaande gemeentelijk monument op eerbiedige manier aanvult en mooi in het landschap is verklonken. De concertzaal heeft achter het podium een grote glazen gevel die fungeert als groen decor tijdens optredens en die te openen is naar het Musispark.

Er werd gesproken met architect Patrick Koschuch van architectenbureau Van Dongen- Koschuch en projectleider Ralph van Mameren.

Aan een gebouw met een bijzondere functie zijn vaak bijzondere eisen verbonden. Wat zijn de belangrijkste eisen aan dit openbaar gebouw, en welke directe invloed heeft dit op het ontwerp?

Het belangrijkst zijn de geluidseisen.

Hiervoor moet een doos in doos constructie gemaakt worden: Een buitenschil met z’n eigen eisen en daarom eigen detaillering en materialisering en hetzelfde geldt voor de binnenschil van de nieuwe zaal. De grotendeels glazen achtergevel levert zodoende een geteste geluidsreductie van 58 dB.

Render vernieuwde Musis

Is het een uitdaging dat er een deel bestaand is en een deel nieuwbouw? Hoe wordt hiermee om gegaan in het ontwerp?

Het is een beetje nieuwe expertise aan het worden van ons bureau: de uitdaging is om oudbouw nieuwe allure te geven en sterker te maken zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de expressie van de nieuwbouw.

De twee sterke identiteiten moeten elkaar versterken.

“Het centrale uitgangspunt is dat er geen concessies worden gedaan met betrekking tot de multifunctionaliteit en akoestiek van de zalen.”

Zijn er nog meer centrale uitgangspunten?

Naast dit uitgangspunt zijn er nog enkele cruciale punten die gehanteerd worden.

“Wat we doen, doen we goed”, en “We gaan geen tijdelijk gebouw maken; in materialisering en flexibiliteit ontwerpen we dit gebouw voor een levensduur van meer dan 100 jaar” “Bestaand en nieuw worden door een gemeenschappelijke plint met elkaar verbonden, waarmee het Musis Sacrum een eigentijdse monumentaliteit verkrijgt die hoort bij een dergelijk muzikaal programma. Deze plint creëert tevens een stedelijke voorruimte midden in het park wat zal gaan fungeren als een verlengstuk van de foyers.”

“De kenmerkende, bijna vijf meter hoge, glazen plint geeft concertbezoekers het gevoel in het park te lopen en biedt parkbezoekers uitnodigend zicht op de activiteiten binnen.”

Kan er een uitbreiding gegeven worden op de indeling van de plint?

De plint is alzijdig maar kent wel een publieke en niet publieke zijde. Backstage heeft het een ander vloerniveau en kent in kleur- en materiaalgebruik grijskleuren, zichtwerk beton en notenhouten kastenwanden. De publieke zone daarentege is op maaiveld en kent qua kleur- en materiaalgebruik brons, keramiek en natuursteen. In de artiestenfoyer komen deze twee werelden samen.

Wat zijn de andere kenmerken aan het gebouw?

Het grootste deel van het gebouw zit ondergronds om de impact in het park zo klein mogelijk te maken. Dankzij de lage grondwaterstand in Arnhem was dit mogelijk. Veel belangrijke functies als stoelenberging, kleedkamers, toiletgroep, garderobe, ketelhuis, en keuken zijn dus allemaal ondergronds geplaats.

De concertzaal, foyers en dergelijke zijn wel boven gelegen. Ook had dit tot voordeel dat we dit relatief sober konden materialiseren zodat er geld overbleef om de zaal en de foyers met hoogwaardige

materialen uit te voeren. Hier hebben we bewust voor materialen gekozen die “mooi verouderen” zoals natuursteen waar looppaden zich gaan aftekenen (zoals in kerken) en brons dat anders verweerd op plekken die veel aangeraakt worden.

Hoe is de constructie opgebouwd, en wat zijn de bijzonderheden?

De constructie van het nieuwbouwdeel is op zich niet spannend. De gevel daarentegen wel. De glasgevel zit onder en boven ingeklemd zonder verticale stijlen. En dat met een hoogte van bijna vijf meter. Het glas is dan ook 50 mm dik om de buiging op te vangen. Deze dikte was voor de geluidswering sowieso al vereist, daarom is het gebouw rondom omkleed met 50 mm dik glas dat ontijzerd is om te voorkomen dat je de groenige kleur van de glasdikte ervaart.

Masterplan Musisgebied

Wat zijn de interessantste punten qua bouwtechniek?

De ingang krijgt een herkenbaar uiterlijk door 4 schuifdeuren van één bij vijf meter.

De grote glasdeuren van de entrees en van het te openen raam van de zaal zijn erg bijzonder en nog niet eerder gedaan op deze schaal. Het zijn in feite losse glasplaten die als een soort treintje over een kogellagers in de vloer worden getrokken.

Na de ingebruikname van het nieuwe paviljoen dit jaar, is de renovatie van de oudbouw gestart, die zoveel mogelijk in oude luister wordt hersteld. De artiestenfoyer die twintig jaar geleden is aangebouwd, wordt gesloopt. Hierdoor kan de oostgevel op basis van de oorspronkelijke tekeningen uit 1881 worden gereconstrueerd, inclusief de vijf hoge vensters. De hervonden grandeur van de oudbouw en de helderheid van het nieuwe paviljoen worden met

elkaar verbonden door een glazen entree en foyer met loopbrug. Bij aanvang van seizoen 2017-2018 zijn naar verwachting alle werkzaamheden aan het historisch deel ook afgerond en kunnen bezoekers en artiesten gebruik maken van een geheel gemoderniseerd en uitgebreid Musis.

Museum de Lakenhal Uitbreiding museum in Leiden Om goed te kunnen functioneren moet Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden restaureren en uitbreiden.

Leiden is de vierde cultuurstad van Nederland en wil blijvend investeren in de cultuursector. Dat heeft een gunstig effect op de aantrekkingskracht van de stad. Museum De Lakenhal is sterk verweven met de stad. Met de restauratie en de uitbreiding kan Museum De Lakenhal haar positie als onderscheidend 21e-eeuws kunstmuseum verder verstevigen en een basis leggen voor een duurzame toekomst, aantrekkelijk voor een groeiend publiek. Realisatie van de restauratie en uitbreiding vindt plaatsin de periode 2015-2017.

De museumstukken zijn tijdelijk in andere museums ondergebracht.

De architecten ontwikkelden binnen een jaar een definitief ontwerp dat kwalitatief hoogwaardig en tegelijkertijd kostenbewust is. De vier afzonderlijke gebouwdelen worden op een vanzelfsprekende manier met elkaar verbonden via een centraal binnenhof, dat ontstaat door de historische ‘Achterplaets’ van de oude Laecken-Halle te heropenen. Deze Achterplaets staat in directe verbinding met de historische entree van het museum. In de nieuwbouw worden twee tentoonstellingszalen toegevoegd met natuurlijk bovenlicht en uitzicht op de stad. Museumdirecteur Meta Knol: ‘Met dit ontwerp kan Museum De Lakenhal de toekomst in. Het ontwerp verbindt heden en verleden op intelligente wijze, met een eigentijds en eigenzinnig resultaat dat uitstekend bij het museum past.’

en verleden

Museum De Lakenhal is gevestigd in de 17e-eeuwse lakenhal van Leiden. Het museum werd twee keer eerder uitgebreid: in 1890 en in 1921. Met de nieuwbouw wordt een eigentijdse laag toegevoegd aan de bestaande palet van gebouwen uit verschillende tijden. Het ontwerp van de nieuwe tentoonstellingsvleugel is

een hedendaagse interpretatie van de baksteenarchitectuur van het huidige museumcomplex, geïnspireerd op de historische bebouwing in de omgeving.

Door toevoeging van het nieuwe gebouw aan de Lammermarkt ontstaat een alzijdig museumcomplex dat als een herkenbaar baken zal functioneren in het Leidse Cultuurkwartier.

Eenvoud

Rijksmonument de Laecken-Halle werd in 1640 ontworpen door architect Arent van ’s-Gravesande en diende als keurhal van het wereldberoemde Leidse Laken, totdat het gebouw in 1874 werd getransformeerd tot museum. De rijk gedecoreerde gevel van het klassieke stadspaleis is in zijn oorspronkelijke vorm behouden gebleven.

Van binnen was de Laecken-Halle altijd een functioneel werkgebouw, waar voorname kooplieden en wevers van lakense stoffen elkaar ontmoetten. De architecten hanteren voor de restauratie en uitbreiding het ontwerpprincipe van ‘nobele eenvoud’ en zoeken daarmee aansluiting bij de historische identiteit en functie van de Laecken-Halle.

uit één stuk

Het nieuwe gebouw van Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven voegt zich, net als de LaeckenHalle, op een intelligente manier in de stedelijke omgeving. Het hoge gebouw zoekt met de lage flanken fysiek aansluiting bij de naastgelegen burgerhuizen. Door de verjonging naar boven toe ontstaat een eigenzinnig postuur: een rank gebouw dat stevig met de grond verankerd is. In de plint bieden monumentale boogdeuren toegang tot het werkadres van het museum. Met een groot boograam presenteert de nieuwe tentoonstellingszaal zich transparant en op ooghoogte aan de stad. In de materialisatie zoekt het gebouw aansluiting bij het bestaande complex. Architect Ninke Happel: ‘Het nieuwe gebouw wordt opgetrokken uit

een warme, grijs gemêleerde baksteen; hetzelfde gevelmateriaal als van de andere gebouwen, maar onderscheidend in kleur. Door een menging van een drietal kleisoorten in combinatie met een geïnnoveerd, dubbel bakproces ontstaat een genuanceerd palet van grijstinten, dat doet denken aan de beroemde Hollandse wolkenluchten uit de 17e-eeuwse schilderijen, zoals van de Leidse schilder Jan van Goyen.’

Gevelbeeld

De Joristrap

De Joristrap is een waardevol onderdeel van het monumentale weefsel van Museum De Lakenhal. Er zijn goede argumenten voor het behoud van de Joristrap op de huidige locatie. Er zijn echter ook goede argumenten voor de verplaatsing van de trap. Na een zorgvuldige afweging is besloten om deze laatste argumenten te laten prevaleren en de trap zorgvuldig te verplaatsen naar de zijkant van het gebouw.

Voor de toekomst van het museum is dit de beste oplossing. Het verplaatsen van de trap is de enige manier om tegemoet te komen aan alle wensen en eisen ten aanzien van architectuurhistorie, publieksgerichtheid, ruimtelijke functionaliteit, museaal belang Vernieuwde Joristrap

en architectonische kwaliteit. Door een relatief overzichtelijke bouwkundige ingreep ontstaat een radicaal effect: een ruime, open en lichte Achterplaets. Zo kan het museum, met respect voor het verleden, een gedurfde stap naar de toekomst zetten.

De nieuwbouw komt aan de achterzijde van het lakenhal-gebouw. De vleugel krijgt twee tentoonstellingszalen en een nieuwe gevel aan het Lammermarktplein. Het ontwerp van de nieuwbouw is geïnspireerd op de historische bebouwing eromheen. Daar wisselen hoge en lage gevels elkaar af.

Het werk zal zo’n twee en een half jaar in beslag nemen. Tot het voorjaar van 2019 is het museum gesloten voor publiek.

Rechtbank Amsterdam

Een tijdelijk gebouw, met een tijdelijke constructie In oktober 2016 is de Tijdelijke Rechtbank Amsterdam in gebruik genomen. Middels een Design, Build, Maintain & Remove (DBMR)-opdracht is hete gebouw gerealiseerd consortium dpcp een combinatie van Du Prie bouw & ontwikkeling en ontwikkelaar cepezedprojects. Het ontwerp is vervaardigd door architectenbureau cepezed in samenwerking met cepezedinterieur. In de periode van 2016 tot 2021 vindt in dit nieuwe tijdelijke gebouw een groot deel van de rechtsspraak plaats. De overige bestaande bouw wordt in deze periode deels vervangen door een nieuw permanent gebouw. Het Rijksvastgoedbedrijf zorgt er met de keuze voor dit type opdracht (DBMR) voor dat de restwaarde van het tijdelijke gebouw na een eerste gebruiksperiode maximaal is. Hiervoor is het belangrijk dat het gebouw aanpasbaar wordt ontworpen zodat het gebouw later op een andere locatie en mogelijk in een andere omvang en door andere gebruikers maximaal gebruikt kan worden.

Vooraanzicht Tijdelijke Rechtbank

Om een volledig aanpasbaar gebouw te ontwerpen en te realiseren is bouwtechnisch gezien niet alleen de montage belangrijk, maar ook de demontage en remontage. Bij de Tijdelijke Rechtbank zijn de constructieve knooppunten zodanig ontwikkeld dat ontkoppeling en hergebruik eenvoudig mogelijk zijn. Gezien de belangrijke publieke functie van het gebouw, heeft het RVB naast hergebruik, ook hoge eisen gesteld aan kwaliteit, functionaliteit en representativiteit hoge eisen gesteld. In het ontwerp is voor een strakke vormgeving en een terughoudende kleurstelling gekozen. Het gebouw heeft een open, verwelkomende en tegelijkertijd ook gezaghebbende uitstraling.

Demontabele

constructie

De hoofddraagconstructie van het gebouw bestaat uit een stalen frame. Een stalen hoofddraagconstructie is zeer geschikt voor 100% circulair bouwen en past goed bij de vereiste zeer korte bouwtijd.

De kolommen zijn doorgekoppeld en de liggers zijn geĂŻntegreerd in de vloer.

Ten behoeve van de stabiliteit zijn op drie plaatsen in de gevel windverbanden aangebracht. Doordat de verbindingen uitsluitend met bouten gemaakt zijn (droge boutverbindingen), is de volledige constructie demontabel. De vloeren Foto Tijdelijke Rechtbank

bestaan uit kanaalplaatvloeren. Normaliter worden kanaalplaten, na het in positie hijsen, afgestort met een deklaag, om zo de vloer sterk en momentvast te maken.

Echter, als in dit gebouw een deklaag gestort zou worden, zou de constructie niet meer demontabel zijn. Speciaal voor dit project is een innovatief koppelsysteem ontwikkeld, waarbij de kanaalplaten middels een kleine aanpassing eenvoudig gemonteerd en gedemonteerd kunnen worden. Een standaard kanaalplaat heeft op de koppen twee uitsparingen ter hoogte van de kanalen gekregen. In de open kanalen zijn stekankers ingestort met aan het uiteinde van de verticale bevestiging een demu-anker. Met behulp van de ankers is de kanaalplaat in horizontale richting (druk-verbinding) en verticale richting (trek-verbinding) momentvast aan de ligger vastgebout. Er is vervolgens gekozen voor een computervloer om tot een vlakke vloer te komen, waarin installatiecomponenten zijn geĂŻntegreerd. Op deze manier is een standaard kanaalplaat geschikt gemaakt voor hergebruik, iets wat bij een natte verbinding niet mogelijk geweest zou zijn.

Zowel het stalen frame als de kanaalplaten verliezen geen sterkte of kwaliteit bij herhaaldelijk gebruik, waardoor de constructie volledig circulair is. In het

detail is dit principe afgebeeld. De gevel bestaat uit bandramen en dichte gevelstroken. De bandramen zijn gemaakt van aluminium vliesgevelprofielen. Voor de dichte elementen is gekozen voor geprefabriceerde HSB-elementen die aan de staalconstructie gemonteerd zijn. Dit zijn elementen die van stramien naar stramien overspannen met een maximale breedte van 7,2 meter. Deze HSB elementen zijn aan de buitenzijde afgewerkt met zwarte waterkerende folie en een naadloos gespannen textieldoek over de volledige lengte van de gevel. Dit betekent bij de langsgevels dat er doeken van bijna 50 meter bij 2,10 meter zijn toegepast zonder deelnaden. Het geveldoek is aan de bovenzijde bevestigd door middel van een pees in het profiel en is aan de onderzijde en zijkanten met behulp van RVS veren opgespannen. Op deze manier is er een zeer lichtgewicht afwerking gecreëerd die eenvoudig te herbruiken is en resulteert in een strak gevelbeeld. De buitenafwerking van deze borstweringen, die zorgt voor het kenmerkende gevelbeeld, draagt bij aan zowel de verbijzondering van de gevelals een gemakkelijke de- en remontage in een later stadium. Kenmerkend voor het interieur is eenheid en eenduidige uitstraling.

Ook zijn de meubels zo ontworpen en gedetailleerd dat ze, na vijf jaar dienst te hebben gedaan bij de Tijdelijke Rechtbank, opnieuw zijn te gebruiken.

Amsterdamse Architectuur Prijs

De Tijdelijke Rechtbank Amsterdam is winnaar van de Amsterdamse Architectuur Prijs 2017 (Gouden A.A.P.). Het gebouw is

door de vakjury als volgt in het juryrapport omschreven: “Wanneer je als bezoeker door de Tijdelijke Rechtbank Amsterdam loopt, word je omarmd door een gevoel van rust. Zowel het exterieur als het interieur zijn eenvoudig en strak in vormgeving, in de betrouwbare stijl van Cepezed, en wellicht op het eerste oog niet erg spannend. Achter deze kalme uitstraling schuilt echter een intrigerend verhaal; het gebouw is flexibel in tijd, plaats en functie. Op geen enkele manier verraadt het gebouw in de uitvoering een tijdelijke constructie te zijn: “Het is architectuur terugbrengen tot lego, maar dan wel lego

van spectaculaire, hoogwaardige kwaliteit”, spreekt de vakjury. Op het gebied van innovativiteit & circulariteit heeft cepezed met vernieuwende technologie – terug te zien in de gevelindeling en het demontabel vloersysteem – grote stappen gezet.

Bijzonder is bovendien dat de architect risicodragend is en verantwoordelijk voor de herplaatsing van het gebouw op een andere locatie. Het bureau kan daarom worden beschouwd als zowel pionier van een nieuwe bouwtypologie als procesvernieuwer.” (Vakjury A.A.P. 2017) De belangrijkste criteria bij de beoordeling van projecten voor de Gouden A.A.P. zijn: de rol van de architect als opdrachtgever, het introduceren van innovatieve bouwoplossingen en het betekenisvol bijdragen aan de groeiende stad Amsterdam.

Uiteindelijk concludeerde de vakjury dat de Tijdelijke Rechtbank Amsterdam in alle opzichten grensverleggend is en daarmee een onderscheidende richting geeft aan de Amsterdamse architectuur.

Maankwartier

Nieuwe stationsomgeving Heerlen In het centrum van Heerlen, nabij het station wordt momenteel het grootse project Maankwartier gerealiseerd. Maankwartier is de nieuwe stationsomgeving van Heerlen, met een grote diversiteit aan functies. Op deze plek kunnen gebruikers werken, wonen, reizen en kunnen genieten. Omdat het spoor dwars door de stad loopt, is de stad als het ware in tweeën gesplitst. Maankwartier zorgt ervoor dat het zuiden en het noorden van Heerlen opnieuw worden verbonden. Deel van het project is de zogenaamde “plaat”. Deze plaat gaat over het spoor en wordt dus de directe verbinding tussen de twee stadsdelen.

Aangezien het Maankwartier rond het station gelegen is, is het een plek waar veel mensen de stad binnenkomen met de trein of bus. Door de bijzondere architectuur wordt dit project gezien als het visitekaartje voor de stad. Maankwartier wordt gezien als een volledige nieuwe wijk, met winkels en cafés, een hotel, kantoren, woningen én een volledig vernieuwd station.

Maankwartier is vooral ook een kunstwerk.

Bedacht door de Heerlense kunstenaar Michel Huisman. Met in het kunstwerk nog eens 89 kleinere kunstwerken. Sommige zijn heel zichtbaar, zoals de Heliostaat, andere zijn verstopt als bouwkundig detail.

Alle kunstwerken samen, vormen één sterrenbeeld en vertellen een eigen verhaal.

Het noordelijk deel van het project is grotendeels afgerond en is inmiddels

toegankelijk. In dit noordelijk deel zijn een parkeergarage, een supermarkt, een paar winkels, en kantoren gevestigd. Daarnaast zijn er huur- en koopappartementen gebouwd. Een deel van de bewoners is inmiddels ingetrokken. In het noordelijk deel, grenzend aan het stationsplein, komen appartementen, winkeltjes, een deel van het hotel en een park. Tussen het noordelijk en het zuidelijk deel komt de Plaat; de verbinding van het Maankwartier.

Op de Plaat komt een vernieuwd station, met NS-winkeltjes, kantoren en een deel van het hotel. Met deze werkzaamheden kon pas gestart worden toen het zuidelijk deel van het project tot op maaiveld af was.

Faciliteiten

Het Maanhotel wordt een unieke plek om te verblijven. Het hotel past bij het multifunctionele karakter van het nieuwe stationsgebied. Er worden allerlei aantrekkelijke faciliteiten geboden, waaronder sauna/wellness, restaurant en vergaderfaciliteiten.

Constructie

De constructie van de plaat bestaat uit een staalconstructie. In april 2017 is begonnen met deze constructie op te bouwen.

Allereerst werd de stationslaag op begane grond gebouwd. Op de staalconstructie komen betonnen liggers. Het positioneren van de deze betonnen liggers was een uitvoeringstechnische uitdaging. Maar

liefst 145 liggers met een dikte tot 1000 mm en een lengte van 23 meter moeten over het spoor heen, in positie worden gehesen. Daarna wordt de betonvloer gestort, waarna opnieuw een verdieping van staal geplaatst wordt. Het bouwen van de staalconstructie zal tot september 2017 duren.

Het totale project kent een investering van circa 180 miljoen. Het aandeel van de gemeente Heerlen is 59.9 miljoen, waarvan 10 miljoen de kosten zijn. De overige 49.9 miljoen komt uit grondopbrengsten, en bijdragen van onder andere de provincie en derden. Het overgrote deel van de investeringen, twee derde van het totaal, komt van commerciĂŤle partijen; onder andere Volker Wessels-Jongen en Weller Vastgoed Ontwikkeling.

3D gevel van de toekomst Flexibele en 100% circulaire design gevel Een 3D design gevel die 100% circulair is en steeds kan worden aangepast aan de wensen en behoeften van gebruikers. Dat is het ultieme doel van de samenwerking tussen specialist in flexibel en circulair bouwen, De Meeuw, en Actual, het 3D label van het Amsterdamse architectenbureau DUS Architecten.

Met de ontwikkeling van een digitaal ontworpen en geproduceerde gevel die 100% bestaat uit recyclaat, zet De Meeuw een cruciale stap richting optimalisatie van het bouwproces én haar ambitie om 100% circulair te worden. Bovendien kan het bedrijf, dankzij het gebruik van 3D printtechnologie, optimaal inspelen op de wensen en eisen van klanten ten aanzien van vormgeving.

Op dit moment kost het besluit tot vervanging of herinzet van een gevel relatief veel mankracht, tijd en geld. Daarnaast moeten er altijd onderdelen worden vervangen en dus nieuw materiaal worden ingezet.

Uitgangspunt van de samenwerking is dat de nieuw te ontwikkelen 3D design gevels na 1, 5, 15 of 20 jaar 100% kunnen

nieuwe openbaar

Bij aanpassing of herinzet van een gebouw of woning kan de originele gevel zelden worden hergebruikt in het nieuwe ontwerp.

Vaak wordt de gevel tegen wil en dank behouden óf wordt deze volledig verbrand.

Els van Mierop, Commercieel Directeur De Meeuw: “In een tijd waarin overheden maar ook gebruikers terecht eisen dat gebouwen en woningen steeds flexibeler en duurzamer worden, zochten wij naar een oplossing voor de lastig te recyclen gevel. Via deze samenwerking kunnen we onze klanten volledige flexibiliteit en vormvrijheid bieden, passend binnen onze duurzaamheidsdoelstellingen. Tegelijkertijd houden we de gebouwen en woningen, door de digitalisering van het proces én het uitblijven van kosten voor verbranding en nieuw materiaal, betaalbaar.” We kunnen in het geval van dit nieuwe type gevel dus ook spreken van een nieuw soort ‘openbaar gebouw‘; door inspraak van en samenwerking met gebruikers van het gebouw en eventuele bezoekers wordt dus ook aan de wens voldaan dat een gebouw voor zijn gebruikers is ontworpen.

Er is momenteel al veel aandacht voor het ontwerpen in samenwerking met gebruikers,

en dit zal alleen maar toenemen. Door de toepassing van flexibele en duurzame gevels, wordt deze manier van bouwen ook steeds beter mogelijk.

3D printer aan het werk, gebruik makend van recyclaat

worden hergebruikt, zonder dat er nieuw materiaal aan wordt toegevoegd. De gevel wordt vermalen tot kunststof korrels waarmee een volledig nieuw ontworpen gevel kan worden geprint. Bovendien is de ambitie om bij de vervaardiging van de initiële gevel, geen gebruik te maken van nieuwe grondstoffen maar van recyclaat: materiaal dat eerder in een ander product is gebruikt, zoals shampooflesjes.

Momenteel is het mogelijk om een printmaat van 2X2X4 meter te hanteren, waarmee deze techniek uitermate geschikt is voor het maken van gebouwmodules,

maar ook om hele gevelelementen te ontwerpen. Er liggen in de toekomst dus meerdere mogelijkheden om deze techniek verder te onttwikkelen.

Via de samenwerking met DUS Architecten optimaliseert De Meeuw het bouwproces én ontsluit het bedrijf de wereld van design voor haar klanten in sectoren als zorg, onderwijs en bedrijfsleven maar ook het nieuwe label voor de woningmarkt, NEZZT. Doordat de gevel via 3D printtechnologie wordt geproduceerd, is er daadwerkelijk sprake van volledige vormvrijheid. Hans Vermeulen, directeur DUS Architecten: “Als specialist in flexibel bouwen verrijkt De Meeuw haar modulaire bouwmethode en de keuzevrijheid voor haar klanten.

Gebouwen kunnen niet alleen steeds opnieuw worden ingezet, maar zullen

straks ook steeds opnieuw een uniek design hebben, specifiek voor het gebruik en de locatie, zonder dat het ten koste gaat van het milieu of dat er grote investeringen moeten worden gedaan.”

Toekomst

Medio juni 2017 presenteren De Meeuw en DUS architecten de eerste mock-up van een onderdeel van de toekomstige 3D geprinte gevels. Naar verwachting zullen de eerste gevels over zo’n 1,5 jaar worden geïntroduceerd.

Ultraslanke trap Constructieve samenwerking tussen glas en beton Het hoofdkantoor van ABT in Velp is recent verbouwd en heeft een eigentijds karakter gekregen.

Vooral de trap in de lobby van het gebouw is een echte eyecatcher die – zoals bij ABT niet ongebruikelijk – is voorzien van de laatste stand der techniek. Of in dit geval: techniek die nog volledig moest worden ontwikkeld. Het resultaat is een uniek staaltje werk met een nooit eerder vertoonde slankheid en innovatieve oplossingen die de reguliere bouwtechniek voor deze toepassing in de toekomst tot grote hoogte kan brengen.

zou de trap werken als een verende plank.

Verder had de architect ook een aantal wensen. Zo mochten er geen verstijvingen in het betonaandeel van de trap komen en moest de trap volledig monoliet worden uitgevoerd en uit één geheel bestaan.

Hetzelfde gold voor de glazen balustrades op de trap. Soortgelijke trappen zijn al wel uitgevoerd, maar nog nooit in deze combinatie en slankheid. Zo is het uniek dat het beton uit één paneel bestaat die wordt gesteund door het glas. Daarnaast is het bijzonder dat het glas de vorm van de trede volgt. Ook is een muizentrap nog nooit zo slank en breed uitgevoerd zonder verstijvingsribben of extra steunpunten.

Draagvermogen

De trap overspant een afstand van bijna 6 meter en heeft een dikte van circa 5 cm.

Deze constructie is 4 keer slanker dan wat momenteel gangbaar is. Hierdoor werd het uiterste gevraagd van de materialen. Uit de berekeningen bleek dat de spanningen in het beton – met name tijdens het plaatsen

en het vervormingsproces – veel te hoog waren voor de betonsoorten die tot nu toe zijn ontwikkeld. Om voldoende trekcapaciteit en dus ook afschuifcapaciteit te verkrijgen, is gebruikgemaakt van zelfverdichtende ultra hoge sterkte vezelbeton (ZVUHSVB). Er is zelfs een speciale ZVUHSVB-mortel ontwikkeld.

Ook deze betonmortel is nog aanvullend versterkt met wapeningsstaal binnen de zeer geringe betondikte. Het inpassen en vervaardigen van de wapening bleek zeer uitdagend.

Onzichtbare

glasverbinding

Een drielaagse ruit loopt met de hoeken van de treden mee. Dit betekent een glasconstructie met de vorm van een grote zaagtand én hoge toleranties, iets wat zelden of nooit vertoond is. In nauwe samenwerking met Si-X – makers in glasarchitectuur – is gezocht naar de juiste productiemethoden. Ook koos de architect voor onzichtbare verbindingen, een droomvraag voor ABT’s glasspecialisten.

Een lange speurtocht resulteerde in een onzichtbare verbinding in de vorm van stalen strippen die geprefabriceerd op het glas zijn verlijmd. Kleine nokken op deze stalen strippen zijn – vrijwel uit het zicht – van onderaf vastgeschroefd aan het beton.

Zinderend spannende sterktetesten toonden aan dat de sterkte van de verbinding alle verwachtingen overtreft.

Wijze

van bouwen

Het betonnen deel is vooraf in de fabriek vervaardigd. Om de trap op zijn plek te krijgen, is een speciaal frame ontworpen waardoor plaatsing relatief moeiteloos kon plaatsvinden. Tijdens het plaatsen werd de trap constructief verankerd. Opvolgend vond er een voorbelasting van de trap plaats, om vervormingen door kruip te versnellen. Dit proces werd zeer nauw gevolgd. Hierna werd de trap ingemeten en het glas op maat geproduceerd. Pas na het plaatsen van de glazen leuningen kon de trapconstructie in gebruik worden genomen.

Rekenen

Door de balustrade constructief te verbinden, zijn het beton en de balustrade gaan samenwerken als een hybride constructie. Door mogelijke kruip in het beton zal de spanning in de verbinding en dus ook in het glas toenemen. Deze situatie is beschouwd waarbij een conservatieve lage stijfheid van het beton is meegenomen en het glas het volledige gewicht en de belasting van de gehele trap draagt. In de praktijk is een groot deel van de kruip al opgewekt door de trap voor te belasten.

De trap is in meerdere fasen berekend en meerdere scenario’s zijn beschouwd. Zo is het betondeel van de trap voldoende sterk om in de zogeheten uiterste grenstoestand zonder balustrade de belastingen te kunnen dragen. Het glas zorgt ervoor dat de trap ook voldoende stijfheid biedt.

Door de extreme slankheid, de grote breedte van de trap, de monoliete uitvoering, de antraciete kleurstof en de grote hoeveelheid wapening was het stortproces voor normale maatstaven

onmogelijk en waren testen noodzakelijk.

Bij de eerste testen bleek bij de stort de lucht moeilijk uit de mal te verdrijven. Hierbij bleven er niet alleen luchtbelletjes aan de kist plakken, maar waren ook complete delen niet volgestroomd met beton. De mal werd als het ware aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door het beton, waardoor het betonniveau niet meer kon stijgen. In tegen stelling tot normaal beton dat minder visceus is, kon de lucht namelijk niet door het beton naar de bovenzijde van de mal komen; de luchtkamer was afgesloten. Dit is verholpen door de kist te voorzien van speciale luchtkanalen en een speciaal zeer fijnmazige verdichtingstechniek.

Testen

Om het draagvermogen van de trap te kunnen garanderen, is voorafgaand aan het ontwerp van de trap de betonmortel met de vezels getest. Ook is het glas beproefd met een slingerproef. Omdat de verbinding tussen het glas en het beton compleet nieuw is, moest deze ook worden onderzocht. Hiervoor zijn kleine samples met de verbinding zowel kortdurend als langdurend beproefd.

Revolutionair

De sierlijke trap gaat zowel productietechnisch als rekentechnisch ver voorbij de grens van het gangbare. Het revolutionaire ontwerp is een demonstratie van de mogelijkheden van UHSB en glas; UHSB toont zich hierbij als materiaal dat veelzijdig toepasbaar – zelfs in dunne platen – en nagenoeg onderhoudsvrij is. Het glas inspireert als constructief draagkrachtig materiaal dat nu zelfs op de kopse zijde verbonden kan worden aan allerlei materialen, zoals UHSB. ABT voorziet een mooie toekomst voor UHSB en glas en de hybride combinatie van dergelijke materialen in slanke constructies.

Circulair paviljoen Zuidas Boegbeeld van een nieuwe strategie Eind 2015 verklaarden de Rabobank, de ING en de ABN-AMRO zich in te gaan zetten om een omschakeling te maken van de huidige consumptiemaatschappij naar een economie die circulair is. In 2016 heeft de ABN-AMRO hier een voorschot mee genomen door in maart de BREAAM-award voor ‘meest duurzame bestaande internationale kantoorpand’ in ontvangst te nemen, uitgereikt vanwege de duurzame maatregelen en behaalde resultaten in de afgelopen jaren voor het hoofdkantoor in Amsterdam. Deze rol wil de bank verder gaan uitbreiden door direct naast dit hoofdkantoor een circulair paviljoen te gaan bouwen.

Een duurzaam paviljoen, dat was de wens van de vastgoedtak van ABN-AMRO. Maar terwijl de bouw van de betonnen kelderbak al begonnen was, werd de bouw stilgelegd. Het ontwerp bleek niet

duurzaam genoeg, waarop dit ontwerp werd aangepast. Dit ontwerp is gemaakt door architectenbureau Cie. De visie voor het paviljoen is dat de bouw zo min mogelijk impact zou hebben op de grondstoffen van de wereld. Een circulaire maatschappij is namelijk afvalvrij, en dit is dan ook hoe het gebouw tot stand zal komen; gerecyclede producten zullen worden toegepast, en ook zullen enkele gebruikte materialen een nieuwe toepassing vinden in het gebouw. Daarnaast is het van belang dat het gebouw meer mensen uit zal gaan dagen om deel te nemen aan deze nieuwe circulaire maatschappij. Deze gedachte werkt op meerdere manieren door in het ontwerp van het gebouw.

Het gebouw is het zo open mogelijk ontwerpen. Door gebruik te maken van een open indeling, brede trappen en glazen puien ontstaat een gebouw dat openheid uitstraalt. Deze ‘uitnodigende uitstraling’ wordt ook benadrukt door de deels parkachtige omgeving, en de openbaar toegankelijke daktuin. Ook de trappen vanuit het paviljoen leiden naar deze openbare ruimte, waardoor ontmoetingen kunnen plaatsvinden tussen werknemers, passanten, geïnteresseerden en deelnemers van de duurzame circulaire

maatschappij. En dat is ook juist de gewenste functie van het gebouw, namelijk het uitdragen van deze circulaire maatschappij en mensen ertoe zetten om ook deel te nemen.

Gebruikte

materialen

Als hoofdmateriaal is er gekozen om gebruik te maken van hout. Naast de duurzame uitstraling van hout, is ook de duurzame toepassing van hout erg belangrijk. Hout heeft namelijk een levensduur die korter is dan enkele andere materialen, en zal dus op termijn vervangen moeten worden. Dit betekent dat het gebouw uit elkaar te halen moet zijn, wat een belangrijk onderdeel is van circulair bouwen, maar ook dat er gekeken moet worden naar mogelijke functies die het hout na deze fase in het gebouw gaat krijgen.

Er moet dus vooruit gedacht worden, om te zorgen dat het hout ook in de toekomt nog gebruikt kan worden. De muren van het paviljoen zijn voor een deel gemaakt van restafval van de steenkoolproductie, een ander deel zijn ruimte scheidende wanden uit een ander kantoorpand, die in dit paviljoen een tweede leven krijgen.

Er wordt dus ook gekeken naar meerdere toepassingen die materialen binnen een

circulaire maatschappij kunnen hebben.

Ook is gebruik gemaakt van aluminium in het gebouw. Dit is tegenwoordig al een proces dat veel gebruik maakt van gerecycled materiaal; de leverancier van aluminium voor het paviljoen haalde namelijk al vijftig procent van hun productie uit gerecycled aluminium. Maar dit was voor ABN-AMRO niet genoeg. Uiteindelijk hebben zij de leverancier kunnen bewegen om voor dit paviljoen aluminium te leveren dat voor honderd procent bestond uit recyclaat.

Maar belangrijk bij een circulaire economie is de participatie van zoveel mogelijk mensen. Zonder mensen die bijdragen aan een nieuwe circulaire maatschappij is het namelijk niet mogelijk deze in stand te houden. Dit idee werd aangegrepen door ABN-AMRO om een verzamelactie op te zetten onder de werknemers om oude spijkerbroeken in te zamelen. Het doel: genoeg spijkerbroeken inzamelen, om vervolgens te kunnen gebruiken in het paviljoen als isolatiemateriaal. En naast bovenstaande voorbeelden zullen er nog tal van circulaire toepassingen in het ontwerp voor het paviljoen zitten, die allen bijdragen aan het paviljoen als uithangbord voor een circulaire maatschappij.

Verwacht wordt dat het paviljoen nog dit jaar zijn deuren zal openen. Iedereen is welkom, en ABN-AMRO hoopt ook dat het paviljoen een plek wordt voor ontmoetingen. Naast het gebruik als kantoor, zal er ook een ‘living lab’ in het gebouw aanwezig zijn, een plek waar nieuwe concepten en strategieën bedacht zullen worden, maar ook experimenten plaats kunnen vinden om wellicht de werking van de gebruikte toepassingen te testen of om innoverende manieren te bedenken om het circulaire gedachtegoed verder door te ontwikkelen.

Salt Lake City bibliotheek Prijzenwinnend ontwerp De Salt Lake City bibliotheek, afgebeeld op de cover, is door de architect Moshe Safdie ontworpen en beschikt over een driehoekig hoofdgebouw, een aangrenzend administratiegebouw, een glazen omheinde ‘urban room’ en een openbare piazza. De ‘urban room’ is een ruimte die gebruikt kan worden in alle seizoenen met veel daglicht en mooie uitzichten. De hoofdroute is een gebogen trap die leidt langs winkels, eetgelegenheden en eindigt op het dakterras.

Aan de buitenzijde loopt bovenop de gebogen structuur ook een trap.

Het gebouw is 5 verdiepingen hoog met een vloeroppervlakte van 22.000 m2. Het gebouw heeft een grote gebogen glazen muur, die van het maaiveld oploopt tot aan het dak. In totaal is er meer dan 16.000 m2 glas aanwezig is het gebouw.

De concstructie is opgebouw uit 34.000 m3 beton. Voor het gebouw ligt een grote plaza. Vanaf het plaza wordt het gebouw

binnengetreden en komt men in de ‘urban room’. Deze ruimte bevindt zicht tusseen de gebogen sructuur en het driehoekige hoofdgebouw. Het dak van deze ‘urban room’ wordt gevormd door een 1900 m2 glazen dak.

De bibliotheek is zo ontworpen dat het overdag bijna volledig op daglicht kan functioneren. In de nacht reflecteerd het licht van binnenuit op de vijver en strekt zich zo uit over het plein. Voor het glas in de halve cirkelvormige glazen gevel is gekozen voor glas met de hoogste UV-waarde die beschikbaar is voor energie-efficiëntie.

Via gebogen, geverfde plafonds wordt het licht gelijkmatig over de binnenruimtes verdeeld. Dit voorkomt weerspiegelingen op de computerschermen, bureaus en boekpagina’s.

De bibliotheek in Utah staat in de top 150 van favoriete gebouwn in de USA en is deze editie afgebeeld op de cover om zijn spraakmakende interieur. Buiten het interieur om gebeurd er buiten ook voldoende. Vanaf het grote plein met vijver kan er over de halve cirkel structuur worden gelopen naar de daktuin. Vanaf de trap loop je via een loopbrug over het glazen dak van de ‘urban room’. In de tuin op het dak staan verschillende bomen.

Parkeren in Leiden

Een parkeergarage als nieuw openbaar gebouw Eind 2014 werd er begonnen met de bouw van ambitieus project; een parkeergarage in het noordwesten van Leiden, onder de Lammermarkt, vlak gelegen naast een monumentale museummolen uit 1743.

Ambitieus te noemen om de vele monumentale gebouwen die om de Lammermarkt heen staan, waarop werd besloten om ondergronds te gaan, maar juist ook om de diepte van de ondergrondse parkeergarage. Deze parkeergarage zou met een diepte van 22 meter de diepste openbare parkeergarage van Nederland worden, en plaats bieden aan 525 auto’s.

Het

ontwerp

De roep om parkeerplaatsen wordt steeds groter, en dus is er in Leiden besloten twee grote ondergrondse parkeergarages te bouwen. Eén daarvan is de parkeergarage onder de Lammermarkt, waardoor het aantal parkeerplaatsen omhoog schiet van circa 140 naar 525. Maar naast dit functionele aspect, is het gebouw voorzien van een interessant concept, wat op zijn beurt weer heeft geleid tot een fraai ontwerp. Ten eerste is het gebouw ontworpen in een spiraalvorm, waarlangs men naar boven of beneden kan rijden.

Daarnaast worden op ieder van de zeven verdiepingen een bepaalde eeuw uitgebeeld, waardoor er per verdieping een eeuw wordt ‘afgedaald’. Iedere verdieping worden er een aantal belangrijke momenten uit de geschiedenis van Leiden afgebeeld. Boven de grond is gekozen voor een minimaal paviljoen, waardoor voetgangers de parkeergarage kunnen verlaten. Door te kiezen voor een rond ontwerp wordt voorkomen dat het paviljoen lijkt te reageren op de naastgelegen bebouwing. De ronde vorm heeft ook een functie; door alleen eenrichtingsverkeer in de parkeergarage toe te laten, was het mogelijk om een zo compact mogelijke parkeergarage te maken, waardoor er ook met één in- en uitgang wordt volstaan. Hierdoor wordt de wens voor een minimaal bovengronds ontwerp nageleefd.

‘Spriaalvormige‘ afdaling

De

techniek

Naast natuurlijk een aantal fraaie ontwerpbeslissingen, zijn er een aantal technische oplossingen nodig om deze allemaal mogelijk te maken. De eerste technische opgave was de manier van bouwen. De nieuwe parkeergarage is namelijk gelegen in de binnenstad van Leiden, en dus moest er gebouwd worden met zo min mogelijk hinder voor de omgeving. Ook hier speelt het compacte ontwerp een rol. Maar de grootste zorg was de veiligheid van de parkeergarage, met name op het gebied van brand. Gemiddeld ééns in het jaar vindt er brand plaats in een parkeergarage. Ondanks dat het dus het niet vaak voorkomt, zijn de gevolgen vaak erg groot, en dat geldt zeker op een binnenstadse locatie als deze. Er is dus een groot belang om het risico op een brand zoveel mogelijk te beperken. Er wordt een combinatie van een aantal installaties gebruikt om hiervoor te zorgen.

Ten eerste is er gekozen voor een sprinklerinstallatie, ten opzichte van een rookwarmte-afvoer. Dit is weliswaar een duurdere oplossing, maar de voordelen van de aanzienlijke stijging in risicobeheersing wogen in dit geval zwaarder. Vanwege het besluit om gebruik te maken van een sprinklerinstallatie, is het volgens het

‘Bouwbesluit 2012’ toegestaan om een brandwerende bekleding toe te passen die 60 minuten brandwerend is. Echter, vanwege de grootte van de parkeergarage, is toch besloten een brandwerende bekleding van 90 minuten toe te passen.

Dit is op het gebied van risicobeheersing natuurlijk ook een behoorlijke vooruitgang.

Maar ook is er veel aandacht besteed aan de vluchtroutes en vluchtafstand. Met name vanwege de enorme rookontwikkeling bij autobranden, en het feit dat in een parkeergarage de rook moeilijk af te voeren is.

Echter is het bouwen in de diepte een trend die pas de laatste jaren in zwang komt – zeker niet deze diepte, en de regels hier nog niet volledig op zijn afgestemd. Het bouwbesluit vermeld namelijk dat een gebouw van 18 meter of hoger voorzien dient te zijn van een brandweerlift, maar er staat niets vermeld over een gebouw dat 18 meter de diepte in gaat. Het is natuurlijk wel zo dat veelal dezelfde principes gelden voor gebouwen die 18 meter in de hoogte zijn als voor gebouwen die 18 meter de diepte in gaan.

In overleg met de brandweer is dus ook een brandweerlift in het gebouw opgenomen.

de toekomst

Zoals eerder vermeld, is dit de eerste van twee ondergrondse parkeergarages die in Leiden ontwikkeld zullen worden. Maar op veel andere locaties wordt tegenwoordig ook gekozen voor ondergronds parkeren – denk bijvoorbeeld aan de parkeergarage onder een duin bij Katwijk aan Zee. Ik verwacht dan ook dat er de komende jaren nog veel van dit soort parkeergarages bijkomen, gezien de ontwikkelingen van steden die steeds dichter bevolkt raken, maar ook vanwege de wens dat de auto steeds meer uit het straatbeeld verdwijnt.
