ALL costs presented here are based on average supply and installation costs of a "typical" deck and applicable taxes are not included. Final costs will vary depending on the details, the structure, the height and size, along with your location and site conditions.

Composite vs PVC Decking

Composite decking is a 50/50 or 60/40 blend of recycled wood pulp or fibres and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is a a type of plastic commonly used to make milk jugs, buckets, and detergent bottles.

PVC decking is composite decking without the wood fibres. More specifically, PVC decking is made from 100% recycled polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is a highstrength plastic.

Similarities

Both are virtually maintenance free Both are extremely durable and stand up well to the rigours of everyday usage with a strong polymer cap which aids in their durability. Both composite and PVC products will expand and contract in the heat and the cold. Both are mold and mildew resistant. Both products rank high for colorfastness and stain resistance. Both products are environmentally friendly in that they are recycled and the top manufacturers maintain rigorous environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices and processes.

Differences

Can be susceptible to mold and mildew when installed in high moisture or high humidity areas such as very low decks or around pools and hot tubs. Contains wood fibres or other materials in addition to plastic.

Tends to retain heat longer. Will generally have more affordable options.

Is generally less expensive.

Generally offers shorter warranties (2550 years).

Ideal for high moisture and high humidity areas such as very low decks and around pools and spas. Contains no organic materials, only plastic.

Will dissipate heat quicker.

PERGOLAS

Costs vary depending on the size, design and materials used

If you are concerned with animals settling, or vegetation growing under your new deck it is advised to prepare the ground by installing a geotextile membrane (landscape fabric) and cover with 2”-3” of crushed gravel

Concrete sonotubes are the traditional and cost-effective choice for deck foundations. They are installed by digging a hole into the ground at each point where a deck post will be located, then placing the sonotube into the hole which is then filled with concrete

Advantage:

Disadvantages:

Vulnerabletoshifting:Thisisthebiggestissuewithsonotubes Despitebeingset belowthefrost-line,theycanstillbevulnerabletoshiftingifthegroundisnot properlypreparedandtheyarenotproperlyinstalledleadingtoinstabilityinthe deck.

Helical Piles

Cost: $295 to $550 each, depending

Helical pile deck footings are the new and more popular way of providing a guaranteed long-term decking foundation They consist of a steel shaft with helical blades attached to it that are screwed into the ground using hydraulic equipment, which ensures a precise and level installation

BUILDING PERMIT

Do you need a deck building permit in Ontario?

Cost starts at $1,200

For large or multi-level decks, gazebos, sunrooms, etc., contact us for a quote.

Each municipality has different requirements for what is needed to obtain a deck permit but generally, if your deck is over 2 feet in elevation and/or is over 108 sq. ft. in size, it will require a building permit. A permit is also required if structural renovations will be made to an existing deck. It is always the homeowners responsibility to obtain a building permit but we can handle the entire process.

Even when you do not require a building permit, your project must still adhere to local zoning by-laws.
