How to keep kids safe online With the NSPCC reporting a 60% increase in calls last year from parents concerned about their child being abused online, it is more important than ever to become online safe savvy and to protect our children the best we can.

Here are some ways we can do this: Direct Supervision Nothing can beat directly supervising your child while they are online by joining in with their activities. Not only can you see and hear what they are doing in real time, you can also respond to and address any safety concerns immediately.

Make chatting about online safety a regular thing Where it is not possible or is impractical to supervise directly, encourage children to be at ease when talking about safety issues.

They will feel more comfortable telling you if they have any online worries if discussions are a normal part of daily life.

Explain simply to your child what they should do if they see something that worries them.

For example, if someone they don’t know tries to contact them, then turn the screen off or put the phone face down and tell you straight away. You can also contact the Police on 101.

Become online safety savvy Learn about applying parental controls, setting privacy settings, checking age appropriateness of apps and consider content filtering software.

Jargon Buster Let’s have a look at some technical jargon, to help know your bits from your bytes.

Inside your Computer, Mobile, Tablet or Smart Device What does Bit mean?

A bit is the smallest amount of data (0 or 1) used when describing the transfer speed of data. Not to be confused with bytes!

What does Bandwidth mean?

You will usually hear this referred to in bits per second (bps), megabits per second (Mbps), or even Gigabits per second (Gbps).

It refers to the maximum amount of data transmitted during a specific amount of time – one second.

What does Ethernet mean?

This connects routers and internet enabled devices by wire within your home. The connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi and often preferred by competitive gamers.

What does Byte mean?

A byte is a unit of data that contains 8 bits. Data storage and file size is usually described in terms of bytes whereas speed of internet is described in bits.

What does Download speed mean?

Like bandwidth, this is the speed at which your connection can receive data FROM the internet.

You will see these referred to in Megabits per second (Mbps) and Gigabits per second (Gbps).

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a wireless network technology that uses radio signals to connect internet capable devices to a router which in turn connects to the internet.

Inside your home What is a Modem/Router

A modem/router sends and receives information (data) from your connected devices to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) So when you type a web address into a browser, a request is sent to retrieve a webpage from the computer that is hosting the webpage.

What is a Network Socket

A network socket is used by fixed line internet technology to connect your home to the outside world.

Note that wireless technologies do not require these sockets, as the internet is beamed directly to a receiver.

Outside your Home What does ADSL mean?

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line The most basic broadband connection available today. It is faster than older dial-up technologies but less reliable than fibre. It operates purely over copper telephone lines and sends data along these at speeds up to 24Mbps though often much slower.

Fibre To The Cabinet is a technology using a combination of fast fibre optic cables and slower copper wires.

Typically, the maximum download speed is up to 80Mbps and often much less.

What does Cabinet mean?

These are the green boxes sited along our streets and roads. Our internet and phone connections come from there.

Data is sent along copper or wire cables before being routed to our homes.

What is FTTP

Fibre To The Premises does without the copper wires used in FTTC and delivers fast fibre optic internet speeds of up to 1Gbps directly to the modem/router in your home.

However, availability is currently limited and restricted to highly populated business and residential areas.

What can affect the Wi-Fi signal strength and speeds in your home?

Location of your router How close you are to the router will determine how strong the signal to your device is. Moving your router to a central part of your house or where Wi-Fi is most used, will help with your signal strength.

Number of devices connected Even if you usually have a great signal, but suddenly experience intermittent speeds or buffering, the cause of this can be the number of devices connected using up the bandwidth. Disconnecting devices that aren’t in use will free up bandwidth allowing you to stream buffer free.

Your house Brick walls, steel, wooden doors etc can cause an obstruction as ultimately your Wi-Fi signal has to transmit through these different materials.

Unfortunately, this one is out of your control.

Wi-Fi 6 The latest Wi-Fi technology Wi-Fi now has version numbers; the old confusing names are now more user friendly. These are the versions you are most likely to see: > Wi-Fi 4 is 802.11n, released 2009

Difference between Wi-Fi Range Extenders, Powerline Adaptors and Mesh Systems Wi-Fi Range Extenders These connect to your Wi-Fi network and then repeat the Wi-Fi signal around your home.

Each extender uses a new name (SSID) that you can connect to, which in turn connects to your main Wi-Fi router.

This might not be for you if you don’t want to be slowed down.

Why? Devices usually stay connected to one network until it becomes unreachable. This means there will still be hard to reach places in your home. Imagine streaming your favourite song but when you walk into the garden, the signal drops until you reconnect to the extender. You might miss the end of the song.

Powerline Adapters

6G Internet recommended Mesh System A Mesh system is a serious upgrade to your Wi-Fi network.

Unlike Wi-Fi extenders, powerline adapters don’t use wireless technology.

They send information using the power cables that are already in the walls of your home.

All you need is an electricity socket at both ends, a bit like plug and play!

You will need a sender unit and a receiver unit installed. If these are too far apart, or your electrical cabling is not new, then performance can be greatly affected.

The idea is that multiple identical units are placed around your home, using wired ethernet for optimum coverage and fewer, or even no black spots. You can then listen to your music seamlessly as you move around your home, no more fading out and no more drops in connections speeds.

They also all have the same network name (SSID) so no need to reconnect to an extender.

Bonus!

Be careful though as powerline adapters claiming 1Gbps speeds often provide less than a tenth of their advertised speeds.

This might be the choice if your electrical wiring is in good enough condition can be cheaper than a new Wi-Fi system.

Understanding Wi-Fi Speeds in your home when connected to multiple devices.

You might have an ultrafast internet connection to your home - but what use is it if your phone, tablet or other device cannot handle the high speeds?

Fortunately faster bandwidth speeds help by allowing multiple devices to connect to the internet at the same time.

So for example, you might be streaming Netflix on your TV

while browsing the internet on your phone and someone upstairs is streaming music while your doorbell records outside motion.

That is an example of concurrent usage. When friends or family members start using multiple devices at the same time, higher download speeds are required to keep everything running smoothly.

Safia Nawaz Safia Nawaz had experienced a drop in the quality of her internet connection with another provider when a 6G Internet leaflet was posted through her door.

She experienced an immediate improvement when she switched over to 6G Internet’s 100mpbs broadband service.

“Everything has been excellent, I can’t fault it,” she says. “My bills have gone down and I have a much better service – it’s brilliant.”

Safia, of Blackburn, was attracted to 6G Internet by the prices on offer and got in touch to enquire about signing up. Installation took just four hours, she said, and her team of 6G Internet engineers explained everything in detail, leaving her with peace of mind.

Keith Reynolds Retired Keith Reynolds enjoys spending time watching videos on YouTube – so a strong, speedy internet connection is vital.

That’s not a problem since he became a customer of 6G Internet. Keith, of Blackburn, is a customer of our 40mbps package and says he has never looked back since his home was switched on.

“I’m really happy with what I’m getting, 6G Internet has been great,” he says. “I’ve got quite an inquisitive mind so I prefer watching videos online rather than watching TV. YouTube is very quick now – I click on a video and

A customer for two years, Keith says he was attracted by the innovative technology we use.

Fibre optic cables are mounted on poles to transmit an internet signal to a receiver on customers’ homes, removing the need to use underground infrastructure.

He said: “I liked the idea of 6G Internet’s methods instead of using a provider that has to dig up the countryside to lay cables.

Once he’d registered his intention to switch over from his previous

provider, he says his new broadband service was up and running within a week. As well as improving his experience of watching online videos, he says his connection makes it easy to have the six hours of Zoom calls he has every week without interruption.

Meet the Installers Ryan Attends an average of three jobs a day and says no two appointments are the same. His role involves fitting a receiver on the roof or chimney of a property before running cable from the device to a router inside the home to enable the customer to receive 6G Internet.

Much of his job is about problem solving. He says: “As soon as we pull up, we’re looking at where we can fit the receiver and run

the cable to carry out the job in the most aesthetically pleasing way. We work for a range of customers, and they all notice the speed of their new network straight away – the reaction is usually ‘wow’.”

The 6G Internet customer service is all about going above and beyond, and Ryan says he regularly remains at a home to help a resident connect their devices to their new network.

“People can struggle with some of the complicated doorbells or other tech, so we’ll always stay on to help them out – the most important thing is that they’re happy.”
