CULTURAL CROSSBREED

Design Tutor: Wonchai Mongkolpradit On one summer break, I was travelling in Chiang Mai. I stumbled upon the sign above. It is the sign for the first Muslim community in the city, where Arabic, Thai, and Chinese are presented on it. This intrigued me greatly because Chaing Mai is the last place you’d expect to find Muslims living in such a tight-knit community. This sparked many conversations with the local and I learned that they have settled in the city over a century ago. This inspired me to investigate the city and the community further, and came up with this project. Instead of combining physical elements of different culture the community embodies like what was done at the time.

I subtly incorporated those characteristics within the frame work of locality, and reimage the image of the community as seamless but unique tissue of the city.

investigative document 2 DICHOTOMY OF URBAN SPACE On the main streets, spaces are more formal with monotonous facades of shop houses and squares of temple grounds, once on the inside of the blocks detached houses can be found and the structured streets branches off into maze-like routes, spaces also become more ambiguous with no distinction between public and private space where most of the daily activity happens on the border of the house and the alley. While the rigid shop houses on periphery of the blocks are sterile spaces, its innards’ ambiguity creates life.

WAT PHRATHAT LAMPANG LUANG Located in the heart of the temple is a pagoda, orbiting it are chapels of various sizes. On open grounds within the temple walls, white sand from the nearby river is poured on to the space, this make it seems as though these buildings are floating on a sea of white sand, the domain of otherworldliness is achieved. In contrast to the gleaming white ground of the temple, the chapels are quite dark, with only low openings on all side of the buildings (except at the rear), the light bounces and glares from the sea of sand, lights up the golden buddha statue lighting up the gloomy chapels and resulting in one of the most spiritual spaces.

3 WAT PHRA SINGH Similar to the Wat Phrathat Lumpang Luang, the temple ground is covered with white sand. But in this particular temple a different strategy is employed to achieve spiritual space; although the method also involves indirect and the bouncing of light. Contrary to the sea of sand as the main source of indirect light, the chapels in Wat Phra Singh relies on the light that bounces off the golden pagoda that they orbit. The golden light floods in the dark space through slit fenestrations and it is further amplified by the golden shutters. As the golden light floods the space, I felt as if I left the profane world behind once I had set foot inside the chapel.

4 WAT UMONG Wat umong has a network of tunnels, hence the name ‘Umong’(tunnel in thai) The tunnels lead to several niches, which are either occupied either

by Buddha statues or meditators seeking tranquility. Further from isolating meditators from the outside world, the tunnels act as insulation and keep the temperature cool throughout the day.

Parts of the tunnels collapsed, so monks strung tarp of various colours on top of the collapsed sections. Light passes through into tunnels in various colours, producing a spiritual atmosphere unique to this place.

5 DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE Traditional houses are often very dark, in contrary to ‘In Praise of Shadow’ by Tanizaki where shadow is a mere tool to emphasize light, the beauty of the structures in this region is attribute to the shadow by itself.

The under-stilt space, the light that slips down from the gaps between floor boards creates a phenomenal space often overlooked.

Inside the rooms, light is screened out, gaps between the eaves and the walls lit up the periphery of the rooms, while direct and indirect light are let in through various openings. These rooms hold some serenity and stillness, which I find lacking in most contemporary homes.

LESSON OF FRUGALITY

In 2018, I interviewed a family in Chiang Mai and made measurement and documentation of their home. I learned that recycling building materials was practiced throughout the city in the past and the interviewee’s house is a great example for this as many of the structure and flooring are the timber that was dismantled from their previous home which according to the family, dated back to the time of King RamaV’s reign (1868-1910) and the leftover materials are used to build henhouse fences or shed. And I imagine as time pass, the decayed timber beyond use would be discarded and decomposed, making it a complete loop.

This interview inspires my process for this project, as the old centre of the community left unused with the majority of the timber structure in good condition.

Why not try to utilise the existing structure? But not in a sense of conservation but rather recomposition.

The project not only aim to literally renew the heart of the community by means of rearranging and recycling materials but also metaphorically as new relationships between users and space, as well as programs are proposed to reinvigorate the community.

The house sits where all the access converge. The intervention try to capitalise on the site’s permeating quality by proposing a tranformation of the existing structure into the new nucleus for the community.

This is to lead visitors into the openground, as well as catalyse activities which may take place on this open space.

Coverings are proposed for the plaza. A sunken courtyard is proposed to sever direct connection to the pavillion and provide access for people performing daily prayer, while maintaining visual connection to the plaza.

PROJECT OVERVIEW 1. Stilt Pavillion This pavilion is proposed as the nucleus, performing as flexible hall for various programs crucial to the community such as, prayer space, classrooms and banquet space. The pavilion is aimed to serve as the reception where the public can intermingle with the community.

2. Sunken Coutyard Sunken courtyard is aimed to separate the plaza from the pavilion and provide access for people going to daily prayers.

3. Covered Plaza An ambiguous space neither outdoor nor indoor, public nor communal. The sloped ground acts as a catalyst for activities which may take place on this open space, providing the users with both seatings and orientation.

DESIGNING FOR COMFORT

Imposition of Structures

REARRANGEMENT STRATEGY

In order to better manage the number of recycle timber structure, a modular unit is design and layout in a mat plan. When the abundance of existing structure is taken into account, with the modular being limited to the maximum of 50 units( dictated by the full length 10”x10” timber column)

2”x8” timber beam is the least abundant, thus it is chosen to fill the role of primary roof beam.

According to the number of structural members of the existing house, long span members are quite limited, and in order to be able to cover the area which could adequately serve activities in the community, longer span members are used as the main framework of the roof structure, while the more numerable shorter members are used as cantilever beams to provide coverage for the space below. The local language of superimposition structures inspires design for these structures.

PASSIVE COOLING The temperature fluctuates greatly in Chiang Mai. The summer is often hot and dry while the winter is cold. The sunken courtyard faces south to catch the summer wind, pools of water are put deliberately under the main space to humidify the wind will then flows through slits between floor slabs. This is inspired by chnog maew lod - a gap between the patio and the house.

While during winter, the movable partitions can be arranged tightly to block wind coming from the north.

TRANSITION AND HAPTIC DESIGN Most ablution room are design like toilets with little sensitivity.

The intervention aims to improve this transition, proposing a more sensory sensitive space. Starting with the act of walking barefoot on the stone floor, cooling the mental temperature of the users. Slits between floor slabs lit up the space, depending on the time of day.

ON THE SACRED AND THE PROFANE Daily prayer is a keystone where all communal activities revolve around; therefore, a deeper investigation into the practice is critical in understanding the nature of this performance. In Mircea Eliade’s The Sacred and the Profane, sacred spaces are sanctified or consecrated grounds in which a clear separation of the sacred and the profane world is declared.

However, my interviews with members of the community (including the spiritual leader) reveal that they define sacred spaces differently from Eliade’s writing. They do not view sanctity as being fixed to a location.

Instead, it is the practice of praying which determine the sacredness, which begins when the prayer starts and cease when the prayer ends.

Ultimately, they use time rather than space to demarcate between the sacred and the profane.

Instead of focusing on creating otherworldly phenomenon as seen in many sacred architecture, creation of comfortable and flexible space is chosen as the main design strategy.

Daily prayers only occur five times and each prayer does not take longer than five minutes. It is a wasteful use of space to dedicate it solely to one activity, which as stated above does not need to be sanctified.

Movable partitions are proposed to provide flexibility to the space, allowing users to alter the space according the number of attendees or activities throughout the day, thus fully utilising the space.

The design has three features aimed at accommodating daily prayers to improve concentration. These features are passive cooling design, transition and haptic design which is explained on the last page (P.5)

AESTHETIC OF AMBIGUITY

Employing the language of super imposition seen in the existing market, the intervention aspires to borrow this chaotic yet unique environment of ambiguous structures. This ambiguity extends to the performance of the space as well.

The proposed structure is to be neither building or plaza, covered space or open ground, but would be between the two. Thus, pushing for a new adoption of public space in Tropic climate where huge gathering space are not squares but rather a place in between the outdoor and indoor.

I wanted the process of finding out this space to be as unconscious as possible, to better mimic the formation of the existing structure.

1. Plug-Ins Stairs are added to provide adequate access to the roof scape. Food cart plug-ins are then imposed on the structure to provide amenities to food vendors.

2. Solid Slabs Two gride of 4x4 metres at 50% and 25% opaqueness are made, then imposed with the footprint of the existing structure in two different layers, in order to form the solid covering and roof scape.

3. Fabric Grid of 3x3 metres at 75% opaqueness is to be represented by fabric, this grid is set to follow the main axis of the existing market.

While the existing structures only allow for exchange of goods and services, the intervention, on the other hand, proposes an ambiguous space which would allow the public to utilise the open space to its full extent.

BANGKOK INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS

1st Prize AYDA(Asia Young Designer Award) 2020 Design Tutor: Sarayut Sups Regional round Tutur: Kotchakorn Voraakhom, Manatspong Sanguanwuthirojana

Located not too far from the economic heart of Bangkok is Klong Toey informal settlement. Consisting of over 24 communities and 100,000 inhabitants. The community had been settled for over 60 years but is not recognized by the city municipal as a legal settlement thus the inhabitants have been denied the basic necessities such as electricity, running water and sanitation. This cost great discontent within the community. On the other hand, the city municipal argues that the community is settled on illegal land. Moreover, the inhabitants also cause severe water pollution due to the lack of sewer system. The issue seems to be caused by both sides; thus, the intervention proposed a compromise, and hopefully allows the two party to come to an agreement.

This project explored and proposed a new relationship between governing bodies and marginalised. Although the project was speculative and not put into practice, it questions the conventional narrative of slum clearance where the unprivileged is perceived as a problem. Where in reality, we should recognize them as victims without ignoring the problem they bring.

ISSUES FROM BANGKOK MUNICIPAL

ISSUES FROM INHABITANTS

-Illegal Settlement The community was built on property owned by public entity.

-No Deeds No deeds were given to the community dispite settleing for over 60 years.

- Water Pollutuin The community release sewage and waster water into the canal.

-Lack Basic Commodities No electricity, Addresses, water and sewer system.

-Water Pollution Water in the canal is no longer useable. As people still rely on canal water to do laundry, bathe or fish.

THE MIDDLE MAN SOLUTION

The project would be the middle ground for both party in which the government agency would provide the main structure, toilet and kitchen. Then the rest of the house would be finish by the inhabitant. The compromise would be that the government will be responsible for building half of the building, namely main structure, toilet and building system. The inhabitants will be resposible for the rest which is mainly envelope of the living unit. The inhabitants can either salvage their former homes for materials or purchase new materials to complete their new home. The act of building by their selves can be beneficial because it instills a sense of ownership and belongingness.

With proper sewage system installed, the water pollution problem will be solved which is beneficial to both parties.

TEMPORALITY OF THE PROJECT I imagined the project as organism with symbiosis relationship. I began to think about time and how the project and the community would grow. In the first phase is imagined as the backbone because the core structure would be built in this phase. On later phase, I imagined the structure to grow with the community, adding new frameworks on top of old ones.

SECTION : PHASE 1 All of the reinforced concrete structures and half of the steel structure will be built. Solar panels and rain water cisterns are installed.

The Layout aims to minimize vehicle circulation and emphasize on pedestrian walkways.

In between units are the green spaces with pedestrian walkways connecting the green pocket located between the residential units.

SECTION : PHASE 2 The steel structure on the upper part of building are built and is ready for further occupation.

PHASE 1 The intervention starts in 2022. This phase focuses on the removal of the existing abandoned factory, construction of detention pond and the treatment of the soil through brownfield project. The other priority is to negotiate with the inhabitants and create a mutual ground with the government agency.

SECTION : PHASE 3 All the living units are occupied in this phase where 4 of the modules are to be allocate as communal terraces.

PHASE 2 This phase focuses on the construction of the structure and the system by the government agency as well as the occupation of the living units. And also for the brownfield project, the plant will be harvested and disposed.

PHASE 3 The last phase is the full occupancy of the living units where the additional towers will accommodate the growing population of the communities. The other priority is to create food sustainability through urban farming, utilizing the spaces between the towers.

COLOUR SELECTION In informal settlement, the atmosphere of the surroundings is gloomy. The inhabitants tend to find colourful things to decorate their homes. I want to mimic this quality into the project.

The colour would be use to paint the main structure, creating a more joyful tone for the neighborhood. The colours used are selected from the major colour seen in the area which tends to be primary colour such as Red, Yellow, Blue and Green. These colour would be designated to individual residence unit and structure, creating a sense of individuality in the banal environment. This would help the inhabitants in identify their home and easily orient themselves.

POSSIBILTY OF MODIFICATION The plan shows the possibilities that the inhabitants could modify and built their home with only toilet and kitchen fixed that are fixed features. The units can be divided into small studio-like rooms for small family or two small units can form larger unit to accommodate bigger families. The corridor in the stair case provide access to the housing units. And also create a sense of connectivity, intimacy and community.

STUDIO RURAL: MESLAY DU MAINE INTERVENTION

Design Tutor: Mirabelle Croizier, Nicolas Andre This studio focuses on the problems in French countryside where similar situations are happening all over the area because of unplanned expansions. Meslay du Maine, a town of 3,500 inhabitants, is located in Brittany. This town was founded because it was a major stop for the traders in the past and it started sprawling around the main road up to this day. In the present, the morphology of the town is still quite the same, with the main road being the highway D21 cutting through the heart of the town.

But instead of bringing growth to Meslay du Maine like it did in the past, the highway is quite harmful by bringing pollutions and cutting the connection between the two sides of the town.

Traffic & Connectivity

Growth of Meslay-du-Maine

The collective work of the studio tried to identify the problems and qualities that the town poses. And later to develop a common intention for the group. The studio group decided to come up with the intention of controlled expansion. Where the new parts of Meslay du Maine will be expanding inwards instead of outwards by using the empty spaces in the town. The project also aims to create a better connection between the existing parts of the town by diverting the highway to the North and creating parts that will link up all the zones in the town together. Additionally, the group decides to create a limit made of agriculture landscape which will produce products used in the town's industries and stopping the uncontrolled expansions at the same time. Finally, the project is proposed in phrases to accommodate the speculative future.

This project will occur in the year 2035 as a part of the expanding inwards plan. The project is an extension to the already existing housing complex called Nefliers but it will be a mixture between agriculture area and housing. With food security being one of the main issues in the future. The advantage of this housing project is its self-sustainability where productive gardens are available to all residents.

The project also aims to restore the bocage or hedge system lost due to the town expansion. The bocage system is very important ecologically because it allows the coexistence of manmade landscape and nature where it allows wildlife to move freely within the system. The new bocage system would take the form of the bocage system in the past with new extensions creating new links in the system which will help restore the biodiversity to the area.

The project also aims to improve the quality of the existing housing, proving that housing in this town can be done in a different way. The project will also become an interface between the existing and the proposed interventions by adding common activity areas and physical connections.

HOUSING CONFUGURATION The houses that attached to mollens wall are designed to maximize the surface close to the wall. This is to allow heat to radiat and warm the houses during the night. In order to achieve this, a smaller typology of houses are attached to the larger one. The smaller houses are always attached to the south side of the wall to allow maximum surface of the wall to receive heat during the day. The small house is then sandwiched with another smaller mollens to evenly heat the space during night time.

1. Productive ring This project was aimed to be an interface between the productive limit of the town, where housing meet with agriculture. It is imaged as a starting point where the landscape will permeate into the town and restore the lost relationship between the inhabitants and nature.

2. Bocage System The design considered the past bocage system which allows the co-existence between human and the ecosystem. I proposed a new bocage system which links into the town by analysing the past and the existing system. And through this weaving the town back into the fabric of the country side.

3. Communal edible garden In 2035, we as a group came up with a speculation that food will be extremely important as the world heats up with this breakneck pace.

The project aims to be self-sufficient by planning communal edible garden as the nucleus of the cluster.

This density of housing/garden fits the narrative of the interface perfectly

4. Collective parking Through observation, garages in Meslay du Maine are often left unused, and the inhabitants prefer to park on the road side. This prompted me to add collective parking. As a result, instead of having to create more hard surfaces, more space can be allocated as gardens or bocage.

MOLLONES The design was aimed to stimulate local industries by selecting a local construction method called Mollens.I acknowledged the advantage and disadvantage of this type of construction.

So I arrage the Mollens as the backbone for planning where they are arranged to on a north-south axis, to collect heat during the day and emmit it in the night. Pair of houses are then attached to the walls to reveive this advantage. And because of the wall’s organic properties, fruit vines and edible plants can attatch to them, providing the inhabitants with additional food source.

TOM TOM COLUMN

Tom tom columns are erect annually as part of faculty’s activity as a welcome ritual for freshmen. I took part in design in the column for the year 2018. Usually, the columns would be fabricated inside one of the courtyards of the faculty but due to maintenance, our site was limited to the pavement outside. Because of this, we designed to column in a linear fashion, sloping down to the porch of the building facade. We experimented with lighting design and material properties through iterative experiments with mock-ups before fabricating the whole column on-site. The lighting was design to change to the beat of the drum which freshmen danced to. The plastic bubble wraps disperse light, allowing smoother transition between drum rhythm while producing a spectacular experience for both the freshmen and audience.

In this camp, due to its remote location, we tried to experiment with locally sourced material such as timber and mud bricks. The main structure is the only component we had to transport into the village, so we prefabricated them in Bangkok before assembling them on site.

The village is located in a basin where clay is abundant. We took advantage of the geographical feature and fabricated mud bricks. We experimented with the ratio of clay and organic fibers such as straws and rice barn in the bricks.

The three new buildings are positioned laterally to each other while in parallel with the existing warehouse structure on site. Building A is situated in juxtaposition with the existing reservoir closest to the perimeter of the property. The newly established connection between architecture and nature creates a harmonious environment that is dedicated to the well-being of staff. In this building, the main hall functions as a cafeteria and can be adapted to hold various events and activities such as new year’s parties or staff weddings. On the mezzanine floor, the meeting room opens out to a balcony overlooking the high-ceiling space, which can be used to hold special events. Building B has several functions with the first floor acting as administrative office space and storage rooms with direct access to the loading area while its entire second floor is devoted to a testing laboratory. Lastly, linked to the existing cold storage rooms, finished goods are contained in Building C, a -25-degree Celsius temperature-controlled warehouse.

building A intetior Regardless of their functional and programmatic differences, prefabricated steel portal frames are employed as the main structures for all three buildings. Fabricated by a nearby factory, these portal frames provide an agile construction workflow and flexibility in building envelope methods. With each building, specific functions call for different envelope treatments. Hollow core precast concrete slabs with polished ribbed texture were placed upright to enclose Building A. The half-lap joints are weatherproof and air pockets take part in insulating the building while the treated concrete texture provides a more refined touch to the leisure space.

Building B was wrapped in metal siding to accommodate various programs and storage space while providing flexibility for openings placement and programmatic changes in the future. The advantage of portal frame structures is highlighted in Building C, where -25 degrees Celsius storage needs to be wrapped around on all sides by Isowall sandwich panels. To maintain the maximum insulation capacity, the panels need to be free of any holes and punctures. To comply with this requirement, the panels were installed within the bound of portal frames, creating a fully enclosed insulated storage space without any protruding elements that can cause major condensation issues.

Steel wire nets cover various openings to protect the interior from birds which is a major issue. However, the nets still let in a constant breeze from outside and provide a good visibility factor. In addition, service areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and circulation pathways are strategically placed towards the southwestern edge of the property acting as a shield from the blazing afternoon heat. These delicate design features combined with a soaring floor-toceiling height create a comfortable and practical working environment.

Ultimately, this project tries to provide a well-balanced environment to form a healthy body and soul for individuals in the workplace and create a positive spirit for the company.

DESIGNING FOR FLEXIBILITY Building A’s main hall functions as a cafeteria and can be adapted to hold various events and activities such as new year’s parties or staff weddings. The furniture is designed to accommodate this flexibility. The furniture legs are designed in such a way that they can be stacked. Stainless steel was chosen as the main material because of its durability, minimizing water damages in everyday use, and dents when moved.

The tables and benches are designed to have curve edges, this is to soften up the very formal space inside the main hall and to provide more comfortable arm rest during meals and other activities.

Because large quantity of furniture needed to be produced in a short span of time, I also designed the furniture to be easily fabricated with a few modular members and stainless-steel sheets.

The table is designed in a way that it can be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere (unfortunately, the legs are, in the end, welded to the top structure) Steel plates make up the structure of the table. They are arranged in a way that provide both stability and lightness. This way the stone table top seems as if it is floating when rest on top of the table. Table top structure then pierces through steel pipe legs which ends abruptly before touching the top, further enhancing the lightness we wanted to express.

The living quarter are positioned to form a permeable courtyard.

Series of walls separate the courtyard from the living quarters so screen out undesirable sound. Once inside the premise of the living quarters, patios on their periphery frame the tranquility view of the country side while eliminating the effect of time, enable monks to better focus on meditation. Wooden flooring also encourages consciousness of the present because every step creates creaking sound. The living quarters are shielded from the heat by positioning service areas to the west side of the buildings. Service building is located at the entrance to provide waiting area for visitors. This waiting area help calm the faithful before being received by the supreme patriarch.

Clear story windows are put deliberately on top of service area. This provides natural light and minimize the use of artificial lighting. Moreover, they provide ventilation to these areas as well. Aside from utilitarian reasons, the windows are designed in such a way that it gestures the separation of the massive rood from the living space, creating an illusion of lightness.

The project aims to express local materiality such as timber and terracotta roof tiles.

Instead of having ceiling, the back of the roof tiles are articulated. Their varied colour express their production process and hinder the monotony of the eave. Timber is used not only because of its aesthetic property but also to encourage consciousness of the present. Because with our every slight movement creates creaking sound. It is also selected as the material for louvers and bench because it is easy to handle and pleasant to touch which makes it the perfect material for tactile objects.
