DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS, With the end of the academic year and the start of summer sea term, I am proud to present this edition of the Navigator, which highlights many of the accomplishments and activities of our students, faculty and alumni over the 2016-17 academic year.

With extremely demanding schedules in class, on the playing field and on the training ship, students have also found the time to lead a series of meaningful community service projects.

While they assist others in these projects, they also experience significant personal growth (page 18).

As our students improve themselves and their

community, we are working to make Maritime better for them.

The college is also in the midst of a strategic planning process designed to bring a variety of viewpoints together. This collaborative effort will help us meet a changing industry and world (page 9).

LEARNING AT LUCE The Stephen B. Luce Library melds Maritime’s old and new

W

hether your memories of Fort Schuyler are fresh or faded, the beautiful Stephen B. Luce Library has always served as a vital part of the student experience at Maritime.

used books and periodicals has been revitalized into a modern, glass-walled series of classrooms and smaller spaces for students to collaborate.

Serving as the campus’ original mess deck, many once gathered there to eat meals and to chat with friends. Now, students gather quietly to study, work on projects and presentations, and listen to guest speakers as part of the library’s new lecture series.

Yet the library remains true to its origins: the massive tables built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression are still bathed in light and frequently covered in textbooks and papers, and the aisle that runs the length of the library features a rotating collection of sextants, maps and other maritime memorabilia.

As students’ learning habits change, the Stephen B. Luce Library has adapted and adjusted to meet their needs. One area that once was stacked with infrequently

Luce Library still maintains a bank of computers for students to use to complete homework, conduct research and find reference materials in the collection. Though many students bring their own devices, these computers remain popular.

Students study together in the newly renovated Academic Success Center. The space includes a series of rooms with state-of-the-art technology and was designed to facilitate small-group study and collaborative learning.

The library is still home to the original hardwood tables and chairs built by men in the Depression-era Works Progress Administration. They remain a popular place for students to study quietly on their own and give them plenty of room to spread out their papers, textbooks and computers.

Books and new technology coexist in the Stephen B. Luce Library. The library collection includes thousands of volumes about the maritime industry, culture and history.

Capt. Brian McAllister ‘56 and Angleliki Frangou received honorary doctorates at Maritime’s January and May commencements, respectively. The honorary doctorate is the highest form of recognition the SUNY system offers.

Hundreds, including McAllister and Frangou, receive Maritime degrees

I

n Maritime’s two commencement ceremonies – held in January and May - 277 received bachelor’s degrees, 76 received graduate degrees, and 219 received their U.S. Coast Guard licenses.

Maritime also conferred two honorary doctorates from the State University of New York. Each year SUNY confers honorary doctorates on individuals who have

achieved great distinction within their fields.

In the January commencement ceremony, Capt. Brian McAllister ‘56, chairman of McAllister Towing and Transportation, was awarded the honorary Doctor of Science in recognition of his many accomplishments at the helm of the company. A passionate supporter of SUNY Maritime and its students, McAllister attributed his successes in life to a good education, a willingness to try new things, and luck.

“None of my good luck would have mattered if I hadn’t had a good education or the wherewithal to seize the

opportunities that came my way,” he said. “You can’t know what challenges you will face, but I wish you all exciting voyages.”

In May, Angeliki Frangou, known as the doyenne of Greek shipping, was awarded the honorary Doctor of Science. She is the chairman and CEO of the Navios Group, a global maritime consortium that controls 170 ships and a variety of ports around the world.

Frangou’s brother, John Frangos, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the college in 1985 and 1987, respectively.

Ted Petrone, graduated from Maritime in 1977. Because of these ties and others, Frangou said the college is a special place for her, her family and her company, and congratulated the graduates for their achievement. She also encouraged them to be disciplined and responsible, but also to take risks and to be unafraid of failure.

“There is no growth without error. You will grow to your full potential only if courageously you stretch yourself well beyond your comfort zone,” Frangou said.

“Be adventurous. Take risks, fail and try again. It is not how many times you fail but how many times you get up.”

Planning for Maritime’s future

n the fall of 2016, Maritime, with help from consultants from AKA Strategies, kicked off a strategic planning process.

The first step was to establish a strategic planning committee composed of Maritime faculty, staff, administrators and a student representative.

The planning process will provide insight to determine the direction Maritime will

take to become the premiere maritime institution in the world.

The process involves a survey of the maritime industry and higher education landscapes, as well as various trends that will affect the future of the industry and the college.

Already, many alumni and industry leaders, faculty, staff and students have been engaged through interviews and focus groups to provide their view regarding what will affect the next generation

These efforts have been supplemented by a series of industry panels, participation of committee members in industry-related conferences and an on-campus symposium focused on future technological advances.

Rear Adm. Alfultis is committed to an open and inclusive process that will involve surveys of alumni,

the maritime and related industries, and friends of the college. There will be opportunities throughout the process to review drafts and provide feedback.

The strategic plan will be completed by November 2017 after receiving approval from the faculty and College Council.

Admiral gives first-ever faculty awards

T

hree Maritime faculty members were recognized with the inaugural President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence.

Created this year, the awards are part of Rear Adm. Michael Alfultis’ efforts to distinguish faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.

Recipients were selected for their genuine passion for teaching, their intellectual curiosity and their dedication to making Maritime better for students and staff.

Virginia Ferritto, an assistant professor in the global business and transportation department, received

the President’s Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Ferritto helps graduate students adjust to the program and improve their research, and has helped to redesign the department’s undergraduate program.

Assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering Nicholas DiZinno received the President’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

DiZinno is active in research and professional organizations and has used his knowledge to develop four courses for engineering students.

David Allen, humanities lecturer, was recognized with the President’s Award for Outstanding Service.

Allen represents Maritime on the SUNY Faculty Senate and contributes significantly to the Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler.

The Sailors’ Snug Harbor archival collection includes photo albums of the home’s residents, books recording their personal histories and hundreds of photos. Students are helping the library organize and catalog the collection.

Digitizing the past with Sailors’ Snug Harbor

F

or close to 200 years, the books and ledgers documenting the lives of the thousands of men who lived at Sailors’ Snug Harbor in Staten Island have been in storage.

Thanks to a partnership with the Metropolitan New York Library Council, the handwritten life stories and photos of the Sailors’ Snug Harbor residents are being digitized by Maritime students, faculty and librarians.

“I often think about what would have happened to these men if they didn’t have this place. A lot of them didn’t have limbs, they didn’t have wives or families,” said Annie Tummino, college archivist. “They would have been in poor houses or on the streets.”

Beyond the home’s significance to sailors, the home marked the beginning of the public social-services movement. Its records document a changing society.

Sailors’ Snug Harbor was the first non-denominational retirement home in the country.

“This is maritime history but it’s also New York City history,” said John Rocco, humanities professor. “All these documents and records are undiscovered.

It’s a great resource.”

Two drone pilots gave a live demonstration in the Maritime Academic Center atrium after the DNV GL conference. Professionals and other experts spoke at the conference about the many ways technology is changing the maritime industry.

Maritime, DNV GL host future of shipping conference

M

aritime hosted a symposium centered on DNV GL’s report, “Technology Outlook 2025.”

An internationally recognized organization, DNV GL provides businesses around the world with classification, certification and advisory services to help safeguard life, property and the environment. Every five years, DNV GL issues a report intended to promote discussion and offer insight into the technological landscape of the next decade in the shipping,

energy, environment and life sciences industries.

The symposium, which included Maritime faculty, DNV GL executives, the Coast Guard and maritime industry professionals, came at a time when the college is carefully considering the future landscape as part of its strategic planning process.

The discussions included current and forecasted technological advances in all aspects of shipping. As the report points out, “The next 10 years will introduce many changes. As an example, additive manufacturing – or 3D printing – is dramatically changing where and how things are made.”

Paal Johansen, vice president and regional director of Division Americas at DNV GL - Maritime, presided over the opening session.

His talk provided a glimpse into probable advances in energy and life sciences. He later participated in a panel discussion about engineering and discussed the digital engine room. The panel also included Joe Breglia, Dan Fridline, Robert Kidd and Richard Burke of the engineering department.

A second panel focused on marine transportation and business. Panelists were Nick Roper, regional vice president at DNV GL; Herman DeJonh, DNV GL chief surveyor; Todd Stevens, general manager at Global

Container Terminal USA; and SUNY Maritime faculty members Jeffrey Spillane and Christopher Clott.

Throughout the conference, more than 200 students, faculty and staff attended the various sessions and discussed the revolutionary changes facing the industry.

As real-time evidence of the emerging technological changes in shipping, the conference concluded with a videotaped mock drone inspection of the Empire State VI. A live drone demonstration inside the atrium of the Maritime Academic Center was also conducted..

DANIEL FRIDLINE SUMM ARY Daniel Fridline is an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering who has been with SUNY Maritime since the fall of 2012. Fridline specializes in the area of applied mechanics of solids. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Engineering Mechanics from Brown University.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH. I work predominantly in the area of structural health and failure analysis. The work I am currently most involved with is structural health applied to marine offshore structures.

What that means is we use sensors and analysis methods to determine weak areas on structures, so that a structural failure can be avoided.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS MARITIME APART? We were all experienced industry professionals before we came to the campus to teach. That’s one thing that makes us different than other schools out there. I worked in the industry for 15 years, and many of my colleagues worked as long as I did or even longer before coming to campus to instruct students.

Daniel Fridline has been teaching mechanical engineering at SUNY Maritime for more than five years. He came to the college to teach after a 15year career in the maritime industry.

HOW HAS SUNY MARITIME COLLEGE CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED TEACHING HERE FIVE YEARS AGO? The school has rapidly grown in size in terms of the student population. When I first started here, there were about 40 juniors in the Mechanical Engineering program. This year, there’s

about 95. It’s a big increase that shows the growing interest in the program, and the school in general.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT MARITIME’S FUTURE? The most exciting things in the future of our mechanical engineering program relate to the upcoming changes in the industry. We are seeing a lot of new technology focused on autonomy develop. That’s going to help drive how we change our education process in the future. Traditionally, we were focused on the foundations of engineering and now we’re going to be introducing more and more modern technology into the curriculum.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO TEACH? I love teaching. I’ve been teaching for a long time, not just at the college but also in the industry as well. If I had to pick a favorite class to instruct at Maritime it would be the machine design course. It’s the first course taken almost exclusively

by Mechanical Engineering majors. It’s their first exposure to the design process.

You open students’ eyes.

Up until this point in their degree they have mostly done theoretical prep. In machine design, they have the opportunity to take what they’ve learned in the past two years and put it into practice.

ARE THERE ANY TEACHING MEMORIES THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY FOND OF? It’s rewarding to watch students succeed. I have had multiple struggling students come to me and ask for guidance. They will ask me if they should stay in the engineering program or if they should look to something else. I always try to encourage them to keep working hard.

They’ll come back to me when they’re seniors and tell me they’re graduating.

It’s an awesome feeling to be a part of their growth. As instructors, we always love when our students succeed.

It’s great to see a really good student always do well, but when you see a struggling student succeed, that is really rewarding.

BETTER THAN EVER During the fall and start of the spring semester, the Empire State VI underwent substantial upgrades to the bridge and engine room.

F

or months, the ship was on the other side of New York City, in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The 55-year-old training ship had a series of high-tech upgrades: one of the most technologically advanced electronic navigation systems in the US-flag fleet, and a combustion-control and

boiler automation system.

“There are some interesting challenges involved in getting these highly advanced systems put into a ship like the Empire State,” said Capt. Rick Smith ’81, commandant of cadets and master of the training ship.

“Now that the work is done,

it’s incredible to see how the crew and the cadets are coming together to learn these systems in preparation for summer sea term.”

The work was part of a $6 million dockyard period, funded by the U.S. Maritime Administration, which owns the ship.

Two engine cadets learn their way around the new boiler automation system, installed during the fall maintenance period. The new system allows reduced manning in the engine room, giving cadets more time to learn the other systems and complete projects.

“We know that there is no substitute for the experience that our future licensed mariners get from summer sea term,” Smith said. “These advanced systems give cadets familiarity, knowledge and skills that will help them succeed when they sail on their licenses. These new systems are similar to the ones

they will see as professionals working in industry.”

The $1.2 million bridge upgrade, designed by Raytheon Anschutz, allows cadets working on the navigation or training bridges to see real-time data and make independent navigational decisions.

Previously, the training bridge was set up only to allow cadets to watch actions taken on the navigational bridge. The navigational and training bridges are each equipped with their own integrated radar and ECDIS (electronic chart display and information system), and cadets can switch

between the two systems seamlessly. There are also more workstations than ever before.

“The cadets are amazed,” Smith said. “They are going from old technology to the best technology available.

Significant changes occurred below deck as well. In the engine room, a MARADapproved program to automate the combustioncontrol system began.

The system, designed and installed by ICI, allows reduced manning during maneuvering. It also exposes cadets to modern engineroom technology. Previously, approximately 20 people monitored the plant as the

ship sped up or slowed down.

Now, one person standing at a control board can adjust the system with push-button technology.

The more streamlined operations give cadets time to focus on auxiliary components and systems in the engine room.

In addition to the upgrades funded by MARAD, the college plans to invest in 10 workstations and software for the ship to allow cadets to become familiar with the automation systems before they have to stand watch in the engine room.

“Though there were some special challenges to integrating this new technology with the original technology, it is fascinating to watch the igniters moving,” Smith said. “No one has to do

survey mapped the entire underwater portion of the hull and identified areas of interest. In dry dock, all of those areas were inspected by class and the Coast Guard and found to meet or exceed requirements.

In the midst of the maintenance, Maritime’s administration, in partnership with officials from MARAD and the other state maritime academies, have been working diligently to secure a replacement for the Empire State VI.

ONE SHIP AT A TIME FIVE BOATS, including two battleships, destroyers and a 40-pound cruise ship, battled to protect islands and attack rivals. An aircraft carrier launched drones into the air to record the maneuvers. Each was controlled remotely by highschool students.

On the sidelines, spectators clapped, gasped and cheered. It may have been the first time in history that

Riesenberg Gymnasium has hosted war games.

The boats were designed and built by Bronx highschool students. For four years, teenagers have come to Maritime to learn about science, technology, engineering and math, thanks to federal grant money administered by the state and the SUNY Research Foundation.

Maritime faculty and students have invested significant time and energy into teaching classes and working with the high schoolers. Over the four years, Maritime students have increasingly taken the lead.

The student instructors learned from and connected with their Bronx high-school pupils on many levels. “I faced my own economic barriers to get to college. I

The grant-funded program was designed to introduce younger students to STEM fields and encourage them to pursue higher education. Maritime students developed leadership, teaching and mentoring skills.

The culmination of the STEM program was a regatta hosted in the Maritime pool. In addition to testing their models, students also used their models to defend areas of the pool from each other and, occasionally, collide.

didn’t think I would get to go; it was discouraging. It took a lot of external support to push me to apply and I am grateful that I was given a chance,” said program instructor Nick Spangler, an International Transportation and Trade senior from Staten Island. “I want to show kids that despite what they are going through, despite what they don’t have, they can rise above their economic impediments and be successful.”

Twice a week for an hour and a half each time, the high-school students came to Maritime and learned engineering concepts, discussed leadership and ethics, and got their hands dirty building their models during the 8-week program.

“As the program changed and grew, the students were pitching design ideas,” said Robert Peterson, a Naval Architecture junior from

Massachusetts. “They became invested. One of the students’ pitches was the reason we had electronic ships.”

Now that the funding has run out and with support from campus administration, faculty and staff, Peterson and Spangler will spend the summer seeking financial support to continue the STEM program. Already they are talking about improvements to next

year’s regatta, including 3-D printing the students’ designs and allowing them to build catapults for the regatta battle.

“I thought we could give them something they hadn’t seen in their high schools,” Peterson said. “Not only were we helping the kids, but I saw all of us grow as leaders. We were building this experience one ship at a time.”

OJAIRA SUERO SUMM ARY Ojaira Suero is a freshman Marine Environmental Science major from the Bronx, New York.

Ojaira Suero came to SUNY Maritime College on the advice of an educator from her high school.

In addition to her studies as a Marine Environmental Science student, she is in the regiment of cadets, the lacrosse team and several clubs.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUNY MARITIME? The assistant principal of my high school knew that I was fascinated by marine biology and everything that has to do with the ocean. She gave me the initial push to look at this school; she thought it would help broaden my horizons. At first, I didn’t think that Maritime was the right fit for me. Then I noticed how promising the Marine Environmental Science program looked.

I saw that they had a lot of opportunities to work hands-on with what I was interested in. Also, I had the chance to pursue two careers at the same time, becoming a marine biologist and a third mate. There aren’t many schools that offer a program like this one, and even fewer in New York state.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS PROGRAM? Ever since I was a kid I knew I

wanted to work with animals.

Originally I thought I wanted to be a vet or a zoologist. I saw the movie “Dolphin Tale 2” and after that, everything clicked. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I’d love to work in an animal rescue center one day, rehabilitating animals and learning more about them.

The most interesting class that I’m taking right now is the biology 202 lab. We’re studying ecology and animal behavior. At the end of the class, we get to dissect a pig.

CAN YOU TELL US YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT MARITIME? My favorite part is all the things the freshmen do together, like Mug-O-Ween, the Halloween celebration freshmen host for the upperclassmen. Everyone was dressed up in costumes and it was pretty funny.

I also like wearing the uniform and the structure of everyday life. I don’t have to worry about where I’m supposed to be or what I’m supposed to do. If you take a look at what goes on here, you understand why Maritime has such good credibility in the industry.

AN UNEXPECTED ADVENTURE Some students arrive on college campuses knowing exactly what they want to do in life.

O

thers think they know, but discover something entirely different on the path to graduation.

When Kevin Byrne ‘91 arrived at Maritime, he planned to use his degree to find a job in his home state of New York.

“That got us onto the water,” Byrne said. “That’s when I got involved in taking boats out — sailing boats, motor boats.”

Instead, he became a Navy captain who has traveled the world and lived in cities across the country.

Those years on the water got him interested in Maritime.

His life may have been very different but for a short move that made a huge impact. As a teenager, his family moved

“I didn’t know I would like the regiment and the schedule, the military standard I had to live up to,” he said. “I hadn’t grown up with that kind of structure, but I found it to

be something in which I did well.”

Out of financial necessity, Byrne joined the NROTC’s College Program his freshman year. Then he earned a threeyear scholarship to cover his remaining tuition. At the time, he intended to “take the money, get commissioned, serve my tour, and then get out.”

Before he graduated, he applied and was accepted to the nuclear power program.

He spent his first tour on board a Sturgeon-class attack submarine. He said his experience at Maritime gave him an immediate advantage.

“The regiment and summer sea terms put me head and shoulders above my peers,” Byrne said. “A lot of people in the Navy hadn’t driven a ship before they arrived for their first assignments. But I had driven the Empire State, and I had done all the different jobs.”

Instead of serving and getting out, Byrne’s goal became commanding at sea.

He became a commanding officer, responsible for two ships and 150 crew during months-long deployments.

The hardest thing about life on a submarine, he says, is not the time without the sun or the presence of nuclear power. It’s the lack of communication with the outside world – no social media, no television, no telephones.

“You’re under and out of communication for certain periods of time; you can’t call home and ask for help,” he said. “You have to be able to lead individuals and teams through challenging situations, and what I learned in school helped me shoulder

those responsibilities.”

After six assignments, Byrne is now responsible for teaching others how to shoulder those responsibilities.

Rather than commanding submarines, Byrne leads

the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, South Carolina, a 228-acre campus with 500 staff and faculty members, and 3,000 students. He oversees the school’s general administration, including evaluating instructors,

BAC K ON C AMPUS Capt. Byrne returned to Maritime this spring for the first time since 2012. During his visit, he met and spoke with NROTC officials, school leadership and students on a number of topics, including leadership, maximizing their time at Maritime and life in the submarine community. Though his work doesn’t allow him to return often, Byrne said he values his years at Maritime more and more with each visit. “The school just emanates maritime culture,” he said. “I probably didn’t appreciate it enough when I was there.”

During the tour, Capt. Byrne reminisced about his time at Maritime and offered advice to Kotov, who will be reporting to Naval Nuclear Power Training School this summer.

He always checks the incoming roster of new Naval Nuclear Power students for Maritime graduates – there are usually between two and four.

“A lot of senior officers here look after students from their alma maters,” he said. “I try to do the same.”

After 26 years in the Navy, Byrne has three years left of his current assignment.

At its end, he will either be promoted to admiral, with the accompanying opportunities, or he will leave the service.

Wherever his future leads, Byrne holds fond memories of Maritime, including his friends from A Company, his baseball and hockey teammates, and surviving challenging classes like celestial navigation.

Perhaps his greatest memory is one summer sea term stop

at Gaeta, Italy. The Empire State’s rudder broke down at the start of the journey home, and the ship and its crew were stranded for a month in Genoa. It was a student’s dream come true.

“I had a month of standing duty on the ship every third day, and then I’d spend the next two days with my friends,” he said. “We had plenty of money and a place to stay and food to eat, so we enjoyed a month in Italy.”

What started on campus, in classes and on summer sea terms led to a career of adventure that Byrne could have never anticipated.

“Growing up on Long Island, I assumed I would stay in New York and find a job after school,” Byrne said. “I wouldn’t change a thing. My wife and I enjoy the lifestyle and the people, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

BILL AUSTEN ’80 SUMM ARY Bill Austen, 1980 SUNY Maritime graduate, grew up on the shores of Long Island building boats. After earning his degree in Marine Engineering, he worked two decades at General Electric and currently resides in Wisconsin as a division leader of Bemis Company, Inc.

It’s been more than 30 years since Austen graduated, but he remains closely connected to his alma mater.

BILL AUSTEN ‘80 always had an affinity for the water. He didn’t know that passion would one day lead him to be president and CEO of Bemis Company, Inc., or to a spot in the George Washington University Hall of Fame.

Growing up on the south shore of Long Island, Austen identified as a boater at a young age. He loved boats so much that he built two of his own.

“The education (at Maritime) gives you an edge. You know what it’s like to be disciplined.

You know what it’s like to work a long day. You know what you need to do to get the job done. I was given a foundation, an opportunity I never thought I’d have. In the end, the lessons that I learned shaped who I am.”

“When you’re a high-school student, you don’t have a clue what you want to do with your life. You only know what you like. Luckily, I was toured around Fort Schuyler by my brother-in-law. I saw the campus and the ship and realized that this was it for me.”

Over his two-decade tenure at GE, Austen held leadership positions in field engineering, sales, regional management and general management.

He also expanded two businesses globally through deals in Italy and Indonesia and led two business-unit turnarounds.

After graduating with a degree in Marine Engineering, Austen worked in General Electric’s marine services division. Quickly realizing that his education was aiding him immensely in the field, Austen enrolled at George Washington

“I spent 20 good years at GE,” he said. “They trained me, they treated me well and I learned a tremendous amount from them. I loved it.”

Currently living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, with his wife Nancy, Austen was recruited

by Bemis Company, Inc., as president of its MACtac division in 2000. The company supplies flexible packaging to food, consumer products, healthcare and other companies worldwide, and employs 17,500 people across 59 facilities in 12 countries.

At Bemis, Austen once again found himself advancing into higher and higher leadership positions, thanks to his keen business sense, education and experience. In his 17 years at Bemis, he has moved from vice president of operations to executive vice president and chief operating officer to president and CEO. “I’ve learned life is all about integrity and values. Stay true to those and you will go far.

TAKING HOME-COURT ADVANTAGE EARNING A DEGREE from Maritime College allows graduates to experience countless opportunities around the country and the globe. No matter how far away graduates stray from the Throggs Neck Peninsula, many alumni return to the place they called home.

Kristofer Schnatz is one of those boomerang alumni. He graduated from Maritime in January, 1999, with a Marine Transportation degree. He began his postgraduate journey as a marine analyst for the National Imaging & Mapping Agency in Bethesda, Maryland. After the stint in suburban Washington, D.C., Schnatz made his way to Michigan City, Indiana, and used his degree as an operations manager and master for Blue Chip Casino Hotel, a riverboat casino on the

30 • NAVIGATOR

southern banks of Lake Michigan.

Throughout his 11 years on the water, Schnatz’s passion for athletics continued to burn. A four-year member of the Maritime basketball team, he stayed connected to athletics with several athletic positions at the highschool and collegiate levels, including 10 years at Purdue University-North Central in Westville, Indiana. In that time, he earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Valparaiso University.

With his master’s in hand, Schnatz became the executive director of Athletics and the men’s basketball coach at Indiana University-Northwest in Gary, Indiana, in 2012. During his four years leading the Red Hawk athletic program, Schnatz spearheaded the

department’s growth from three teams to seven, and helped develop programs that helped student-athletes academically. During his tenure, their grade-point averages reached record levels.

Last year, the director of Athletics position opened at Maritime. Schnatz immediately jumped on the opportunity to return to his alma mater and lead the Privateers. After a competitive search, Schnatz was selected to return home. He has been at Maritime since December.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to come back to Maritime and the athletic program that helped shape the person I am today,” said Schnatz.

“The program has changed significantly since I was a student-athlete,” he said.

“While the department has expanded, there is still room for meaningful growth within the department and at the national level. My vision focuses on developing the core values of leadership, respect and integrity in the classroom and in competition so that we can better align our department with the Maritime College mission.

“Division III athletics plays a substantial role in the overall experience of our over 400 student-athletes,” he noted.

“Athletics will continuously look to enhance that experience.”

A LU M NI Emmy-winning alumnus, Gary Jobson, offers advice to the Maritime sailing teams

Chalos discusses groundbreaking maritime case

E

arlier this year, maritime lawyer Michael Chalos ’70 gave a lecture as part of the Stephen B. Luce Library Lecture Series about the case that changed maritime law forever.

He spoke about his role defending Capt. Joe Hazelwood ’68 in the Exxon Valdez disaster case. In his lecture he gave a behindthe-scenes look at the case, how he approached it and why he took on the task of defending his former shipmate.

“He put his faith and trust in me and I think that’s a Schuyler thing,” Chalos said.

“That bond will carry you through life.”

The 1989 case was the first time a ship captain was prosecuted for an environmental disaster.

Michael Chalos gave a talk at Maritime about his role in the Exxon Valdez disaster case. During the talk, he showed and explained some of the evidence he used to explain the disaster to the jury.

Hazelwood was charged with three misdemeanors and a felony that carried a sentence of up to 15 years.

With Chalos defending him, Hazelwood was found guilty of one misdemeanor.

After the lecture, Chalos donated several of the charts and maps that formed the evidence during the trial to the Luce Library archives.

In front of a full lecture hall, he told them about watching the New York Knicks win the 1973 NBA finals, fighting nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, and competing in sailing races in all weather. He told them that the secret to being a good skipper is to give the team a pep talk and make sure that everyone has a job and understands it.

That advice, he added, works in any professional environment as well.

our roommates from the class of 1963 got together for the first time in more than 50 years, for a round of golf on Daniel Island in South Carolina.

Joe Maurelli lived together for three years on board the Empire State IV. At the time, there were no dorms on campus and students lived on the ship all year. After Maritime, the four went their separate ways and lost touch. They spent three days together this spring, catching up and sharing memories.

WILLIAM EDWARD HOFFMAN ‘48, formerly of the Bronx and Mesa, Arizona, was permanently “run aground” Oct. 28, 2016. Until bad health left him “dead in the water” and a “stick in the mud,” he was often considered a “hunky-dory” fixture at class reunions.

He “palled around” with boyhood friend and “swashbuckling” fellow “son-of-a-gun” Frank Wulf. Together, the pair “dismantled” Maritime’s “galley” and “stores,” where they feasted after hours, “downing the hatch” on campus “grog.” Their adventure left school authorities “at loose ends;” the pair were never “clapped

in irons,” nor did they have the “devil to pay.” Bill’s nickname, The Little Fruit King, came from the night’s prank.

claimed to have stayed “on an even keel,” exploring the areas and “giving a wide berth” to “floozies and bilge water.”

After he graduated, Bill’s “maiden voyage” was aboard Moore-McCormack Lines, where he “learned the ropes” on the Atlantic and Pacific shipping lanes. He “lent a hand” with the Hungnam Evacuation, which was the subject of the documentary, “Ship of Miracles.”

He “pulled a watch” for 30 years, still quite “ship shape.”

He plied the “deep blue seas” of the Long Island Sound and beyond as he fished and sailed.

The U.S. Navy “shanghaied” Bill and he served aboard the USS Fort Mandan in Operation Sunec. His “ports of call” included the “shoals” of Greenland, Labrador and Newfoundland. In port, he

Gone to “meet his maker” and his former shipmates in “King Neptune’s great beyond,” Bill leaves behind three sons and a grandson. His family are “down in the doldrums” and would welcome any “hails” from his classmates about his “halcyon” days, which he considered the best of his life.

A proud Fort Schuyler alumnus, his daughter, Karen McAovy, said he loved getting the Navigator and showing it to her, to share what his life was like as a cadet. At his 50th reunion – more than 20 years ago – he was proud to show off the campus to his family, share memories and introduce them to old friends. Robert and the rest of his class graduated in 18 months because of World War II. After graduating, he served in the merchant marines during the war and went on to serve for two years in the Navy during the Korean War.

1969 ROBERT LEE MCALLISTER ´69 passed away January 7, 2017, at the age of 70. After graduating from Fort Schuyler with a degree in engineering, he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College. He went on to start his own engineering firm in New Rochelle, New York.

He is survived by his wife, two brothers, four children and six grandchildren.

On April 8, approximately 300 prospective students and their families attended the college’s annual Accepted Students Day. Over the course of the day, 862 total guests got to know the campus, speak to faculty and staff, and learn more about what it means to be a student at Maritime College.

According to preliminary data from Admissions, the incoming class will include 350 students, 73 percent of whom will be in the U.S. Coast Guard license programs. Approximately 12 percent of the admitted freshmen, transfers and graduate students are female, and nearly a quarter are underrepresented minorities.

There are also more students coming to Maritime to pursue degrees in International Transportation Management, Maritime Studies and Marine Environmental Science.

The numbers are expected to change slightly over the summer.
