A Historic $44 Million Investment in SUNY Poly

In November 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul and SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. announced a $44 million State investment in SUNY Poly, which will expand the current health science wing and update nursing labs in Donovan Hall, as well as create a semiconductor processing lab for workforce development, and a robotics, advanced manufacturing, and engineering research and education lab.

WILDCAT CAREERS

Our International Student Services Office is committed to helping matriculated international students navigate CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT opportunities.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is an alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education or other type of required internship or practicum.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (precompletion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).

Optional Practical Training Extension for STEM Students (STEM OPT)

F-1 students who receive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT).

Transfer students can apply for admission using either the Common Application or the SUNY Application beginning August 1.

Transfer International Admission Requirements

Transfer Credit

Students can transfer up to 76 credits from a two-year institution and up to 94 from a four-year institution.

Foreign transcripts and documents must be professionally translated in English and evaluated. Applicants must use a service that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (naces.org). SUNY Poly requires a course-by-course evaluation with GPA calculated.

Dual Admission Program

Small class sizes, quality programs, individualized learning experiences, an affordable investment, and successful graduates are all reasons why SUNY Poly is New York’s premier public polytechnic! SUNY Polytechnic Institute's partnership with Herkimer College guarantees a seamless transfer experience for students to continue their education at SUNY Poly after earning their associate degree.

Through the Dual Admission Program, students are concurrently admitted into an associate degree program at Herkimer College and a bachelor’s degree program at SUNY Poly, located just 30 minutes away in Utica, NY. Students at Herkimer College must earn an associate degree with a 2.5 GPA to continue their studies at SUNY Poly. Students should contact the SUNY Poly Admissions Office to discuss the best path from Herkimer College to SUNY Poly to maximize transfer credit for timely completion of their bachelor's degree.

Seamless Transfer Initiative

SUNY Poly’s Seamless Transfer Initiative provides many benefits to all students transferring from Herkimer College, including specific scholarship funding. Students currently enrolled at Herkimer College who did not select the dual admission option at the time of application can still take advantage of the benefits of the seamless transfer initiatives. SUNY Poly offers Instant Decision Appointments regularly and a Transfer Admissions Advisor is available to coach students through the credit evaluation process.

Seamless Transfer Scholarships

Wildcat Gold: $8,000 per year (Overall college GPA of 3.5-4.0)

Wildcat Blue: $7,000 per year (Overall college GPA of 3.0-3.49)

Path to Poly: $750 per year (Overall college GPA of 2.99 or lower)

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Applicants to SUNY Poly must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving the minimum score noted below from one of the following standardized exams:

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Internet based score of 79

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.0

• PTE Academic (PTE): Overall score of 53

• Duolingo English Test (DET): Total score of 105

• iTEP: Overall score of 4.4

Students who have earned an associate degree from a community college in the U.S. are exempt from the English Proficiency requirement. Students may be exempt from the English Proficiency requirement if their native language is English or they graduated from an accredited U.S. high school.

International students transferring from Herkimer College who have successfully completed EN 111: College Writing and EN 112: College Literature are exempt from the English Language Proficiency Requirement.
