About ‘Classy & Fabulous’. The famous words of Coco Chanel. This style icon mentioned exactly what the new range of Surdiva® stands for. Surdiva® is elegant. Surdiva® is arty. But most of all, Surdiva® is always in style. This brand new collection of Scaevola varieties will turn your garden into a richly coloured art deco pallet. With beautiful, decorative, outstanding flowers that make a dazzling statement straight away. Surdiva® is a range of nicely coloured Scaevola, one of the most heat tolerant bedding plants in the world. While the native species has a wild, rangy habit, Surdivas have a compact mounding to trailing habit, producing distinctive fan-shaped flowers on short terminal spikes that show super continuous flowering. The plants are drought tolerant and self-cleaning, what makes them ideal for low-maintenance situations. Hence, the Surdiva® collection is highly versatile and has a very wide range of uses: from ground cover to hanging baskets and from pots to balcony boxes. New genetics Presently, we will introduce five improved varieties which we refer to as ‘the new generation of Surdiva®’. These upgraded plants are

compact, show very good branching and have a high flowering power. The habit is more semi-mounding in comparison to the usual trailing habit of the Scaevola and the propagation rate is improved. Surdivas are interesting plants to mix. Because of their similar habit and the wide colour range offered, they fit beautifully together. Moreover, they are very interesting to use in composition with other Suntory® varieties. They have a long flowering life until late in the season and perform very well outside due to their good heat and rain tolerance. The story of Scaevola The background history of the plant name Scaevola is an interesting one. The name is Latin for left-handed, in reference to the flower looking as if it has been cut in half. Many legends have been told to explain the formation of this unique flower shape. In one version, a woman rips a Scaevola flower in half after a quarrel with her husband. The gods, enraged by the event, respond by turning all Scaevola flowers in half. The two lovers will be separated forever, while the man is destined to search in vain for another whole flower. Half a flower or not, Scaevola is a perfect addition to your landscape.

Art Deco The Surdiva® collection is elegant, arty and always in style. The luxurious colours in combination with the beautiful delicate flowers makes Surdiva® the perfect plant to bring the glamour of the roaring twenties and thirties to a 21th century garden. To support the sparkling and jazzy identity, the look and feel of Surdiva® is focused on the art deco style. An extravagant movement that is characterized by rich colours, symmetrical designs and refined detail work. In line with these components, the brand logo of Surdiva® is a deep messing coloured and symmetrically shaped feather - inspired on the Charleston costumes of the Great Gatsby showgirls. The brand colours are mustard, lilac and blue grass. The perfect combination to showcase the qualities that Surdiva® stands for. Mustard is a piquant and tangy colour that adds a shot of flavour to anything it touches. Lilac is defined as feminine and powerful. The colour can also be described as bright and outstanding. Hence, the bluegrass colour symbolizes confidence and eternal grace. Just as Surdiva®: an outstanding plant with elegance and style that will bring timeless beauty to your garden.

Advantages Wide range of uses From ground cover to hanging basket and from pots to balcony boxes, Surdiva® is ready to add its sparkling glamour everywhere. Interesting for mixing Because of its mounding, semi-trailing habit and the wide colour range offered, the little diamonds of Surdiva® are perfect for mixing if you want to customize your plant basket. No baldness Scaevola varieties can have problems with what you can refer to as ‘Scaevola-pattern baldness’. It means that hanging baskets have colour only around the outside edges, while the top is just shiny and green. However, with its constant and abundant covering of blossoms and their semi trailing habit, Surdiva® will generate flowers from top to bottom.

Perfect size Surdiva® is just the right size - small enough to be easily cultivated (by growers) and big enough to look strong and attractive to the home gardener. It fits perfectly into baskets, pots, window boxes or landscape plantings. Long flowering Surdivas have a long flowering life until late in the season. While most of the other bedding plants are already gone, Surdiva® are still displaying their beautiful bright flowers in the garden. Low maintenance Scaevola varieties belong to the most heat-tolerant bedding plants of the world, which makes them ideal for low-maintenance situations. They are care-free plants for the consumer due to their self-cleaning.

Information

Cultivation I

How to use Surdiva® are unique semi trailing bedding plants suitable for a wide range of uses, from hanging baskets, window or balcony boxes to pots and landscape. It will look marvelous planted in the plain soil as a ground cover. It can be used under almost every climates because they are rain and heat tolerant. Surdiva® are care free self-cleaning plants for the consumers, who can enjoy them from May until very late in the season, when all other crops are already gone (November frost). This improved collection are more branching and more compact than usual Scaevola, displaying better looking final products. Its high flower power combined with eye catching flowers will show dense coloured spots in the garden. Our collection of Surdiva® offers a large choice of varieties with a similar habit but different colours, giving the opportunity to mix them easily for a beautiful result. They can also be planted in combination with other crops.

Propagation Take cuttings from vegetative stems: a cutting without a flower bud will root better. Surdiva® are easier to propagate than others Scaevola but it stays a crop relatively difficult to root: regarding the season it will take 4 to 6 weeks to have a rooted cutting ready to be potted. You can use rooting hormones, for example Rhizopon® B 0.1%. The last week of rooting, start to reduce the humidity, watering and temperature to acclimate your cuttings. Potting Start with certified clean material from one of the official MNP flowers dealers. Surdivas are suitable for all kind of pots from 10,5cm to hanging baskets and deco containers. It is recommended to use 3 plugs/pots for hanging baskets and big pots. Use a good quality bedding plant mixture that can contain enough moisture and has a good structure. Recommended pH of mixture is around 5,5/6,0.

Pinching If you use un-pinched cuttings, it is recommended to pinch your Surdivas in the first 2 weeks after potting, regarding plant size. A 2nd pinching can be useful for bigger plants, especially hanging baskets or big pots. Pinching can slightly delay flowering

Growing 1. Growing time Crop time is highly dependent of parameters such as pinching, variety, climate (especially temperature), final desired product, etc.. Scaevola are late crops, sold from mid/end of May. 2. Media and fertilizer Keep the pH around 5,5/6,0 for a better iron absorption and use a medium constant feed (≈200/250ppm). 3. Temperature Keep the temperature relatively high (18/20°C) the first 2/3 weeks after potting, in order to allow a good establishment of the rooting system. After this period the day temperature can be reduce around 16°C. A colder night temperature can be applied to grow a compacter crop, Surdiva® can easily stand temperature around 10°C for a short period. A warm cultivation can also be applied, resulting to a faster growth but also more vigorous plants. 5. Watering Surdiva® are plants requiring a moderate to moist watering. Don’t let the plants dry out otherwise they will lose flowers and buds. Over-watering must be avoided, a saturated soil leads to high risks of damaged roots and/or botrytis.

6. Growth regulation Growth can also be controlled with less watering, using negative DIF or cold morning strategy (from ≈4:00AM and during ≈6h T°C at ≈ 8°C). Surdivas can be kept compact enough by regulating the given amount of water (not water excessively), keeping the temperature cooler, pinching 2 times, using cold morning strategy or negative DIF. The use of growth regulator is usually not necessary. 7. Crop protection Surdiva® can be subject to thrips, white flies, leaf miner, botrytis, verticillium, pythium and rhizoctonia. Disclaimer The information above has been compiled with maximum care and is based on our current knowledge. MNP flowers is not responsible for the consequences of use or misuse of the above information. Behind the brand

About u s

Our four core activities The business of MNP flowers can broadly be divided into four core activities. 1. Testing & selection Each year MNP flowers selects and tests new and innovative varieties in close consultation with Suntory速 Flowers Ltd. The breeding of the plants takes place in Japan, Vietnam and Australia, where an extensive team of professionals works passionately together to create perfect plants for every garden and balcony worldwide. Thereafter, the quality and selection specialists of MNP flowers select the plants and varieties that are suited best to the European market of today. With a clear vision, profound insight and common sense, they test the selected novelties extensively at several testing locations. Requirements that need to be met by our novelties are earliness, sturdiness, floriferousness, weather resistance, colour consistency, growth and more. 2. Building brands After the final selection, the specialists decide which varieties will be introduced and which will be either retested or dismissed. This is the point where we start building brands! The marketing department is the creative heart of our organization. To perfectly position new products into the market, a specified market research is conducted to identify the end consumer of each novelty and his or her corresponding preferences. Thereafter, the product name and brand design is discussed and created in several intensive brainstorm sessions. We develop a brand story, a brand logo, labels,

pots, leaflets and an online platform, to present the brand in every way. Now the product is ready to be marketed! 3. Introduction, sales and licensing The most important activity is bringing our new varieties (novelties) to the professional market. MNP flowers introduces new varieties three times a year: during the IPM, the FlowerTrials速 and the FloraHolland Trade Fair. Consequently, there is always a reason to visit MNP flowers, both on location and during exhibitions. During a visit, business partners can express their interest in a new product and decide whether they want to run trials or to add the introduction to their assortment straightaway. To take up a new variety, a small license fee has to be paid for every Suntory速 plant that is sold. MNP flowers compensate for this fee by creating free marketing concepts, arranging free publicity and PR, safeguarding plant quality, future breeding activities, etc. for its partners. Hence, plants of MNP flowers are protected by trademark and plant variety rights. 4. Monitoring and support At MNP flowers we are happy to guide, advise and provide our business partners in all the support they need. Therefore, we work closely together with our licensees. We visit them as much as possible, not only to consult them about propagating and growing specific Suntory速 varieties, but also to listen and learn from their experiences in the field. This means, we can benefit from each other and establish a continuous growth and improvement of our business and breeding strategy every year.
