Legends At The Broward Center You might consider the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as Carnegie Hall South with upcoming performances of such legends of song as David Foster and Katharine McPhee, Diana Krall, Johnny Mathis and Paul Anka.

FEBRUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 4

Foster & McPhee An Intimate Evening with David Foster and Katharine McPhee returns to the AuRene Theater in a concert generously underwritten by Jeannette and Marty Engelmann this month. Foster, a 16-time Grammy® Award-Winning Musician, Songwriter and Producer, joins with acclaimed Singer, Television and Broadway Star McPhee to bring their viral Instagram show to the stage. Along with some of their favorites, this powerhouse duo will deliver hits from Chicago, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Josh Groban and Michael Bublé and McPhee’s biggest songs from American Idol, Smash and Waitress as well as a lively entertaining banter between the two. For show date, time and available tickets, visit: www.BrowardCenter.org Diana Krall Possessing a voice the New York Times calls “at once cool and sultry, wielded with a rhythmic sophistication,” Diana Krall performs as part of the TD Jazz Series sponsored by TD Bank on Monday,

February 19th at 7:30 p.m. Krall’s unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable artists of our time. She is the only Jazz Singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart. To date, her albums have garnered two Grammy Awards, ten Juno® Awards and have earned nine Gold, three Platinum, and seven Multi-Platinum Albums. From her 1999 Release of When I Look in Your Eyes, which spent an unprecedented 52 weeks in the #1 position on Billboard’s Jazz Chart, to her most recent release, This Dream Of You, Krall has built a devoted fan base. Johnny Mathis Music Icon Johnny Mathis returns on Saturday, February 24th at 8:00 p.m. Given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, he popularized songs now considered standards such as “Chances Are,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” and “Misty” as well as becoming the unofficial voice of Christmas with six holiday albums. Mathis has topped the charts so many times with his more than 80 albums that his 1958 release, Johnny’s Greatest Hits, started the music industry tradition of

Greatest Hits albums and was noted in the Guinness Book of World Records for a nearly 10-year run on the Billboard Top Albums Chart. Paul Anka Paul Anka was born July 30, 1941, in Ottawa Canada, into a tight-knit family, Paul Anka didn’t waste much time getting his life in music started. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles, where he called every record company in the phone book looking for an audition. A meeting with Modern Records led to the release of Anka’s first single, “Blau-Wile Deverest Fontaine.” It was not a hit, but Anka kept plugging away, going so far to sneak into Fats Domino’s dressing room to meet the man and his manager in Ottawa. When Anka returned New York in 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records. He played him a batch of songs that included “Diana” – Costa was duly enthusiastic about the potential of the young singer and songwriter. The rapid and enormous success of “Diana”- his first number one hit made him a star. This songwriting master and incom-

parable performer penned “She’s A Lady” for Tom Jones, “This Is It” for Michael Jackson and “My Way” for Frank Sinatra. One of the most prolific and versatile singer-songwriters of any generation, Anka has had a record on Billboard’s Top 50 Chart for seven consecutive decades and is famous for such massive hits like “Diana,” “Lonely Boy” and “Put Your Head On My Shoulder.” Anka will perform his greatest hits on Monday, March 18th at 8:00 p.m. Tickets Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center and The Parker. Oliver Mair, Jamaica’s Consul General, Southern USA. Based on her life story, Ehrhardt’s play explores the importance of forgiveness and the power of vulnerability as she uncovers a big secret that unlocks her ability to forgive and transforms her relationship with men. At the tender age of seven, Kingston, Jamaica native, DEBRA EHRHARDT started telling stories in a Mango tree to entertain herself and her friends. As she grew up, she dreamed of coming to America to study theater. After graduating drama school in New York, she was advised by Producers and agents to lose her strong Jamaican accent as that would limit work for her. Easier said than done. Instead, she decided to write and perform her own stories based on her colorful life in Jamaica and has performed all over the world. Previous solo productions include Mango, Mango which received two NAACP Awards and Invisible Chairs, produced by David Strasberg at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in West Hollywood and later optioned as a situation comedy by Fox and Cock Tales: Shame on Me! which garnered rave reviews. Her play, JAMAICA FAREWELL was optioned and produced by Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks wife) and Oscar-Winner, Garry Marshall at the Falcon Theatre and is currently optioned for film by Oscar Winning Producer, Jeremy Thomas in London. Ehrhardt has performed her own stories all over the world based on her colorful life in Jamaica and has made her home in the U.S. while maintaining an unquestionable passion for her native land. Previous solo productions include Mango Mango, Invisible Chairs, Cock Tales: Shame on Me! and Jamaica Farewell which was produced by Rita Wilson-Hanks and Garry Marshall and has been optioned for film. In addition, she has performed at the storytelling center in Jonesboro, Tennessee, the Taos Storytelling Festival in New Mexico and the Ojai Storytelling Festival in California. She was the winner in 2017 for the Best Storyteller in Long Beach, California. The recipient of several awards, Ehrhardt received a proclamation from the City of New York for her “Outstanding Contribution to the Jamaican Community” and was named one of Jamaica’s top ten newsmakers for 2010. She founded “What’s Your Story Jamaica,” a million-dollar storytelling competition in Kingston, and returns to Jamaica every year to produce and promote the competition. She maintains the fundamental belief that content is king, and to that end, she imbues her work with tenderness, subtlety, and intensity, striving tirelessly to emphasize what makes art meaningful: hon-

Ellie’s Army Foundation Dirty Socks 5K Run And Walkathon To Benefit Children And Young Adults

FEBRUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 12

Ellie Levy’s life was about teaching everyone about compassion and caring while suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs. What Ellie and her family saw, from the beginning, were people hurting - and it affected all of them in a way that many of us could ever understand. During Ellie’s many hospitalizations, Stacey and Brian Levy began to meet far too many parents struggling to keep their children alive due to limited financial resources. This is something that many in this nation never have the chance to see - and convey it to those who may one day do something about a parent who can’t afford to pay for life-saving medications because they have no money for copayments, or for crucial nutritional supplements or necessary therapies, because they were not covered by insurance. Parents should not have to choose between keeping their child alive and paying their Electric or Mortgage/Rent Bills. So, in 2001, in response to what they saw and watched others endure, the Levy’s created the Reach for the Stars Foundation in 2001 to benefit individuals with CF. Fourteen years later, in March of 2014, Ellie was 22 years old and suffering from the end stages of Cystic Fibrosis. She received a Double-Lung Transplant, but within a week, her new lungs were failing and she was re-listed for another set of lungs. Against all odds, she endured a second transplant on April 15th. During her recovery, Ellie met another young woman who also needed a Lung Transplant, but was unable to meet the financial criteria to be accepted into the Transplant Program. At that moment, Ellie decided that when she was well, she would focus her efforts on providing other young people with the money necessary to stay alive. Sadly, on November 5th, 2014, Ellie Levy passed away. In her honor, the memory of Ellie Levy indeed lives on - as her

foundation name was changed to Ellie’s Army Foundation in 2017. The foundation has expanded its mission to assist not only those afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis, but children and young adults suffering from all critical illnesses. Why Dirty Socks? The inspiration behind the “Dirty Socks” event was Ellie’s surgeon (Gustavo), who told her in order to survive her Lung Transplant, she would have to walk. Despite the pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked, often exceeding her surgeon’s expectations - and to prove her hard work, Gustavo wanted to see the bottom of her socks. If they were dirty, she was doing what was told. So, despite the

pain, Ellie walked and walked and walked. She was a Warrior! “Ellie gave her surgeon a bag with her dirty socks in it. He said that he will keep her socks in his office for the rest of his life. Ellie inspired him with her determination, her desire to live and her fight.” All children in the hospital wear medical socks and must walk to get well. Sometimes they can only take a few steps. At the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon we walk for them. We walk for Ellie. By taking part in the Dirty Socks 5K & Walkathon, you are walking for those who fight the fight every day - and paying tribute to Ellie Levy, who helped to bring awareness to a disease that many knew nothing about.

Ellie’s Army Foundation is hosting the Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon to benefit children and young adults battling lifethreatening illnesses. The Foundation provides financial resources for families of children and young adults battling lifethreatening illnesses. Ellie’s Army Foundation helps pay for medical expenses, insurance copayments, therapies, or daily living expenses such as housing payments, energy costs, utility bills, etc. Now more than ever these families are struggling. Be a Warrior, come get your socks dirty! For more information visit: www.Elliesarmy.org - Or: www.Dirtysocks.org

treatise; this is a thriller, and if people aren’t turning the pages, then I’m not doing my job.” Enemies Among Us is a sequel to Stephens’ first book in the series, The Handler, which an: www.Authors.com reviewer called “a heart-pounding ride with great narratives … It’s got it all — spies, assassins, guns and terrorist cells … If you liked Vince Flynn novels, you would love Stephens’ super-cool CIA operative Nick Reagan.” Enemies Among Us takes all that to another level, as Reagan and his partner, Carol Gellos, attempt to track down the terrorist responsible for the planned attacks in The Handler. While the good guys are easily identified in that story, it is a bit more difficult to tell the heroes from the villains in Enemies Among Us. As Reagan assembles clues to the

whereabouts of his prey, his superiors in the CIA inexplicably order him to stand down, and it becomes increasingly evident that the evil he faces could be corruption from within. Charting an unfamiliar course amidst the pervasive treachery and deadly secrets inside the nation’s capital, Reagan is not sure who he can trust as he works to expose the worst of America’s elite — those who believe in a New World Order. Violent confrontations intensify with each new act of treason he unearths, leaving Reagan to rely on his patriotic instincts as he and his team risk their lives to bring down these traitors and restore safety and freedom. “Many may have thought the continuing threat from terrorists was over,” Stephens said, “but as we have recently seen, it remains incredibly current and violent … while few would believe that corruption within our own intelligence services and the highest levels of corporate power are something we are dealing with in real time.” In additional to The Handler and Enemies Among Us, he is the author of the Jordan Sandor thrillers, Targets of Deception, Targets of Opportunity, Targets of Revenge and Rogue Mission, as well as the Anthony Walker murder mystery Crimes and Passion and the Pencraft firstplace award-winning novel, Fool’s Errand.

Plan Your Next Vacation Like a Pro Planning ahead often allows you to map out the most successful adventure If the chance to unplug, recharge and just get away is calling your name, it’s a sign that it’s time to plan a vacation. Whether you envision a trip around town or across the country, getting organized and doing a little prep work can help you make the most of the experience. A destination like California offers cities big and small with an assortment of activities, theme parks, shopping districts, beaches, restaurants and more to be explored. Start planning your next getaway with these travel tips from the experts at Visit California: Plan Ahead Last-minute trips can get you deals, but you might also be limited by what you’re able to see and do. Ticketed attractions that sell out quickly may be off the table, and the most desirable hotels can fill well ahead of time, too. Planning ahead often allows you to map out the most successful adventure. Set a Budget Be sure to consider transportation, accommodations, meals and admission to various attractions. Consider which aspects of a vacation are most important to you and budget more money to those areas, like a five-star meal, ocean view room or priority pass to a favorite park.

• “8 New Trails to Explore,” showcasing freshly constructed paths in California’s parks • “Sustainable Sips,” a guide to some of California’s eco-friendly wineries • “6 Fabulous Film Locations,” a jet-setting guide from movie scout Lori Balton

• “Plan-Ahead Travel Guide,” where readers can learn how to score a spot at the state’s most coveted attractions • “California Shopping: A to Z Guide,” a comprehensive guide to shopping throughout the Golden State “From surfing dogs and summer skiing to cosplay conventions and a worldrenowned culinary scene, California’s options for play abound, accommodating every type of traveler,” said Caroline Beteta, president and CEO of Visit California. “That playful spirit is ingrained in every aspect of what makes our state so

special and this year’s guide will help readers discover how they can experience it firsthand.” Pack Appropriately Staying comfortable throughout your journey ensures you can focus on the experiences. Be sure you’re familiar with the climate, including the forecast during the time you’ll be visiting. While summer days can be quite warm, evenings on the coast often warrant a light jacket. Also be sure you’re prepared for the activities you’ve planned, such as adequate foot-

wear for hiking, long pants for horseback riding and sunscreen for time outdoors. Create an Itinerary Even if you prefer a more spontaneous getaway, having at least a loose idea of how you’d like to spend your time traveling can help you be more efficient and avoid wasting time. Think about the things you want to accomplish and fit them together so you can avoid awkward gaps or unnecessary travel and ensure you get to pack in as many experiences as you’d like.

Treasure The Average Floridian Willing To Forgo Over 5 Years Of Life To Live Like A Millionaire 1-in-4 would sacrifice career goals to live like a millionaire

endless luxuries of a millionaire. It seems that for many in Florida, the allure of sipping cocktails on a private beach or jetsetting to exotic destinations is worth the trade-off. Here is an Interactive Map to show how many years of life Americans in each state are willing to trade for a millionaire lifestyle (click on ‘embed’ to host on your site) Digging deeper, Wealth of Geeks explored what else Floridians would forfeit for a life of extravagance. A surprising 23% would let go of their career goals, which is understandable if financial worries were off the table. More concerning, though, is that 16% would sacrifice quality sleep, and 15% would abandon hobbies, including model train enthusiasts among them. Personal privacy is a commodity 13% would part with, while 11% would

forego living close to family. A smaller group, 4%, would be willing to cut ties with friends, assuming they could make new ones in their new swanky circles. However, in a heartwarming revelation, just 1% would trade away the chance at love for the sake of wealth, affirming the belief that money can’t buy happiness. Respondents also weighed in on which aspects of a millionaire’s life appealed to them most. High-end real estate took the top spot with 27%, followed closely by luxury goods at 23%. The allure of luxury travel enticed 22%, and the idea of personal services like butlers and private chefs appealed to 21%. Meanwhile, 7% were most attracted to the exclusive events that come with a wealthy status. However, nearly half the respondents were skeptical about how accurately the media portrays the millionaire lifestyle,

with 48% doubting the reality matches the glitz and glamor often depicted. When asked how adopting such a lavish lifestyle would affect their personal relationships, opinions were mixed. About half predicted a positive outcome, 24% feared a negative impact, and 26% felt things would stay the same. It seems that even when it comes to the prospect of immense wealth, Americans have varied views on what truly matters. “The results of our survey reveal a striking paradox in the American psyche. On the one hand, there’s a deep-rooted desire for financial freedom and the amenities that come with it. On the other, for the vast majority there’s a poignant awareness that wealth and luxury are not substitutes for genuine relationships and emotional connections,” says Michael Dinich of: www.WealthofGeeks.com

FEBRUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 23

Imagining a life rich with private yachts, elite jets, and the finest of five-star retreats is something millions of Americans dream of each day. The allure of a millionaire lifestyle, devoid of debt and seemingly absent of stress, is irresistible to many. But what would an everyday American surrender to step into the shoes of a Silicon Valley mogul, a Wall Street titan, or even a Hollywood A-lister? It is a question that: www.Wealthof Geeks.com - sought an answer to. They ran a survey of 3,000 respondents asking a hypothetical question: How many years of your life would you willingly trade to enjoy the splendors of a millionaire’s existence indefinitely? The findings were eye-opening. On average, Americans would give up 4 years and 11 months of their lives for an endless taste of wealth! Geographical differences showed varied levels of willingness to make this trade-off. For example, residents of New Hampshire, despite their state motto “Live Free or Die,” would give up the most time – a whole 7 years and 11 months – to live like millionaires. Given that the average lifespan in New Hampshire is 79 years, they might feel they have extra time to spare. On the flip side, the people of Indiana and North Dakota seem to hold their time on earth dearer than vast riches. The average survey participant from these states would ‘only’ trade half a year for a slice of the millionaire pie. The survey results indicate that Floridians, on average, would surrender a whopping 5 years and 2 months of their life for the opportunity to indulge in the

2024 Travel Trends: AAA Reports A Strong Demand For Cruising The new year is off to a hot start for the travel industry, particularly with cruising. Travel professionals with AAA – The Auto Club Group say cruise lines saw record breaking booking days last year, and that trend has carried into 2024. “We’ve seen cruise ships already sell out of suites and cabins with balconies for

various spring and summer itineraries,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Travel demand is off to a strong start, which means availability will continue to shrink in the next couple of months. So, if you want a specific itinerary, ship, or cabin

type, act fast or you’ll have to start planning for next year instead.” Best Time to Book a Cruise The first three months of the year are referred to as “wave season.” AAA says this is the best time to book a cruise, because cruise lines offer a wide range of discounts that can vary from 3060% discounted pricing, cabin upgrades, BOGOs, on-board credits, pre-paid gratuities, and drink packages. Benefits of Booking with a Travel Advisor “What travelers may not realize is that if they book their cruise with AAA, we offer additional benefits and savings that can be combined with what the cruise lines provide,” Haas said. AAA says travel advisors provide additional value by helping you set up all aspects of your trip including excursions, dining times, and transportation. They can also help identify what documentation you’ll need, like passports, which are required for cruises to international

destinations. U.S. Passport processing times have improved. Last fall, it took 8-11 weeks for a new passport. Now it takes 6-8 weeks. AAA offers special rates on Expedited Passports and Travel Visa Services online at: www.AAA.com/RushMyPassport Popular Cruise Trends The most sought-after dates for cruising are when students are out of school. That’s why spring break, summer, and the holidays tend to book the fastest. Those who are flexible on dates may find more availability and competitive pricing by sailing during the fall and the period between spring break and summer. The Caribbean is popular year-round, but spring and summer are the most popular sailing times. Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. Because this is an abbreviated period, there’s more competition for availability. Weekend cruises have gained popularity in recent years. Weekend warriors have realized the value of an all-inclusive cruise compared to a weekend getaway in a big city resort. Cruise lines have rec-

ognized this growing trend and are making weekend cruises more of a priority in 2024, by mobilizing some of their newest ships to accessible ports for weekend excursions. European River cruising is now operational year-round. Because European travel is most popular during the summer, travelers can avoid the crowds and find lower priced cruises and airfares in the early and later parts of the year. About AAA - The Auto Club Group The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the second largest AAA club in North America with more than 13 million members across 14 U.S. states, the province of Quebec and two U.S. territories. ACG and its affiliates provide members with roadside assistance, insurance products, banking and financial services, travel offerings and more. ACG belongs to the National AAA Federation with more than 64 million members in the United States and Canada. AAA’s mission is to protect and advance freedom of mobility and improve traffic safety. Opening Coconuts with the Gardener and My Brother By Ira Liebowitz

Let’s go back, back through a mist of time to dreamy nostalgia. I am in bright sunshine surrounded by lush greenery - crotons, hibiscus - the pink-green elephant ear plants - not from the Serengeti - outside a South Florida apartment. Look up high, higher to the tops of Sabel Palms with frondly foliage of dark, lush green enshrouding its fruit: varying shades of maturity: yellow, gold, and olive-green coconuts. Alongside me is a vital, vivacious, ebullient and keen - yes, wise despite his youth - that was, he was, my twin brother, Alan. Now, Alan was brilliant, having an insight into human nature far beyond his chronological years. Say, thirty years, his astral age. His actual age: six. Oh, back to coconuts. By the white sidewalk lining our garden stood tall, stately those bundles - like over-sized verdant grapes - prized epicurean treats of which patties are covered in chocolate and sold in two-packs at five-and tens and tourist souvenir shops. Sometimes these enviable edibles, these coveted coconuts (how’s that for alliteration?!) fell to the

ground - kerplunk! - for the taking. Again, Alan was beyond his years. Probably all of four-foot and, say, threescore pounds. “Could you open this for us?” politely he’d ask the gardener, with no small degree of reverence. Probably Gene was clad in blue overalls - not like Captain Kangaroo’s sideman, Mr. Greenjeans. This strong, thoughtful man whose lean fingers perhaps with calluses borne from great toil; his skin, nearly as close to jet black as imaginable. From a leather tool belt Gene disengaged first, if memory is right, a solid steel wrench. A second tool, his trusty clawed hammer with which in delicate, graceful swipes, flick the pinkbrown husks, the pithy pulp, from the coconut. Five or six such swipes freed the enveloped fruit. The ease at which Gene performed this arduous task held the two little boys spellbound. I don’t recall the details of this gentleman, except for a lanky physique and a white, broad smile in contrast, in relief, to skin which took on a sheen of polished ebony. Did I mention that Alan had not a

prejudiced bone in his little body? And an innate common sense. “Don’t ask mom to buy that bow and arrow, Ira. We can’t afford it,” he confided. He, who’d tied his shoes before I could, who’d instructed me in kindergarten where to find the puzzles and toys and start me coloring. From nowhere, out of the blue, the worst form of brain cancer had struck and ravaged my brother. Years later mom confided to me how Alan had worn a luminous smile after awakening from a month-long coma after surviving surgery. “Why are you smiling?” she then inquired.

“Don’t be sad, mom,” this valiant boy responded. “I smile because I want you to be happy!” There are those few angelic beings who walk among us. Those tapped into the crucible of love and kindness and goodness to all. Those who stand stalwart for unity and brother/sisterhood. Like Mother Theresa, Ghandi, Martin Luther King .. Like Gene, the gardener, and like Alan. May we learn from the legacy of such quiet heroes and, during Black History Month, reflect on the goodness that unites us all.

Valuable Lessons Mother of Three & An FPL Engineer is Teaching Her Children About Life

Stevany smiles holding her three sons, 8-year-old Hagen (left), 5-year-old Cameron (middle), 11-year-old Brayden (right)

FEBRUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 28

Beach chairs, sandcastle molds, shovels and skim boards rattled in the trunk of the Cole family’s car as they cruised north along I-95 in Palm Beach County toward their cherished Saturday destination. The family of five, made up of two engineer parents, Stevany and Blake, and their three energetic boys, eagerly anticipated the adventures awaiting them on the shores of Juno Beach. As they neared the coast, Hagan, the middle son, pressed his face against the car window, anticipating what’s just down the highway. Like clockwork, his eyes widened, and he exclaimed, “Mommy built that!” while pointing to the side of the highway. To the left unfolds Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) EVolution Hub, a testament to Cole’s engineering endeavors as a renewable energy developer. The innovative project comprises a solar array, stationary battery and two mobile EV trailers, helping the company find new ways to satisfy customer energy needs using Florida sunshine. From navigating the complexities of permitting and approvals to supporting

the project’s engineering and construction, she has played a key role in the hub’s journey from start to finish. “That’s right,” Cole said with a smile as she looked back from the passenger seat to her son gazing out the backseat window in wonder. While his older brother, Brayden, immersed himself in a world of sporting trends and game highlights, Hagan’s curiosity led him down a different path. His 8year-old mind hungers for answers as to how everyday things work. “He recently had a school project where he presented in front of his class what I do for work,” shared Cole, who sent him off to school with a bright blue FPL polo. “He told all of his classmates about my efforts to bring FPL’s Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub online.” The FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub started to produce hydrogen last fall and is officially operating, making it the first project of its kind in Florida. This new project will help the company explore clean hydrogen to offset the use of natural gas to run a traditional power plant. “Piloting clean fuels like hydrogen,

Stevany Cole made with Florida’s most abundant resource, the sun, has the potential to reduce the amount of fuel we have to buy to generate electricity, helping the company keep bills as low as possible for customers,” said FPL Vice President of Development Tim Oliver. The hydrogen hub draws solar power from a nearby FPL power plant to produce hydrogen onsite. “We’ve been on a journey to cleaner and more cost-effective fuels, moving from oil to natural gas and now we’re exploring how to move from natural gas to carbon-free,” Cole said, referring to FPL’s power plant modernizations over the last two decades which have effectively slashed air emissions and saved customers billions of dollars in avoided fuel costs. The FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub is the latest example of how FPL is evolving how it serves customers, developing a more modern, stronger and cleaner energy grid. “It’s always interesting looking back on where I started my career to now being here, making history in Florida,” she said.

Eight years ago, Cole transitioned from working at a papermill harvesting trees for consumer products to helping build a more resilient and cost-effective grid with FPL. Cole is proud to be part of something greater than herself. “Eventually my generation will be gone. Then, my children will be the ones left with their own kids,” she said. “I can only hope to leave the planet a better place for them.” Cole’s commitment to building a brighter future for the next generation extends beyond career ambitions, intertwining with her personal life. “Teaching my boys to take care of the Earth is important in our family,” said Cole. “When we go to the beach, we get a bucket to pick up trash while we’re looking for shells.” As their hands sift through the sand, collecting shells of all colors, shapes and sizes, they simultaneously gather littered bottles and wrappers. Each piece of trash retrieved becomes a small but significant step, echoing the larger journey toward sustainability.
