WANTED LIFEGUARDS! The City of Hallandale Beach is seeking full and part-time lifeguards to stand watch over the City’s waterfront and Municipal Swimming pool beginning Monday, Oct. 1, 2012. Hallandale Beach City Commissioners unanimously voted Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012 to return the lifeguard operations to a City operation. The vote allows the contract with Jeff Ellis Management to expire at midnight, Sunday, Sept. 30. The decision will give the City full control over water safety on the beach and at the pool. Under the existing contract, Jeff Ellis Management was providing lifeguards only on the City’s public beaches and swimming pool. Commissioners voted to expand the City’s beach coverage to include the entire water-

This will include the areas in front of the condominiums. The lifeguards will be in two groups; beach lifeguards will be part of the Hallandale Beach Fire Department, and municipal pool lifeguards will be part of the Parks and Recreation Department. Beach lifeguards will be United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) trained and the pool lifeguards will be American Red Cross lifesaving certified. The City is seeking a beach supervisor, aquatic supervisor, six full-time lifeguards and six part-time lifeguards for the beach, two fulltime and three part-

time lifeguards for year-round protection at the Municipal pool, and six additional parttime lifeguards for season coverage at the pool. Each applicant must pass a physical and background check as a condition of employment. “I want to have them on board by September 17th,” said Hallandale Beach Fire Chief Daniel Sullivan of the beach lifeguards. “I need time to train them.” The goal is to have all the beach lifeguards to be EMT certified. However, they will not need the certification to be hired. They will need to complete the USLA training course, which the City will provide as part of the orientation

You are invited on Aug. 13 Residents and property owners are invited to join Hallandale Beach City Commissioners at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 13, for the first half of a two-day workshop to discuss the fiscal year 2013 budget at Hallandale Beach City Hall, 400 S. Federal Highway. The workshop will resume at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14. The workshop is one of three scheduled final reviews of the budget. The City Commission will hold two public hearings at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 12, and at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24, for final public comments on the budget. Commissioners are expected to take vote on the first reading of the budget after the first public hearing, and hold a final vote after public comment at the Sept. 24, meeting. The City of Hallandale Beach began working on the budget shortly after the fiscal year 2012 budget was approved last September. Workshops with City Commissioners and residents were held in January, February and March to gather information for the proposed fiscal year 2013 budget. After five Town Hall Meetings to collect comments and suggestions, the City Manager compiled the proposed budget. The 700-page budget can be viewed on the City’s website, HYPERLINK "http://www.cohb.org" www.cohb.org. However, because of the size of the document, it may take several minutes to download. The City of Hallandale Beach urges residents to bring questions and participate in the meetings. The millage rate is proposed to stay at the current rate of 5.9 mills, or $5.90 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation. This is the same rate as the current fiscal year. Also, this is the Truth In Millage (TRIM) rate sent to Broward County for preliminary tax rate calculations. The millage rate can be reduced, but it cannot be increased.
