Iron Deficiency: A Growing Concern Among Women

New York Times on October 17, Alisha Gupta shed light on a concerning statistic: 35% of young women in the United States are grappling with low iron levels. Despite its prevalence, the issue often goes undetected due to a lack of awareness among women and their healthcare providers.

According to the latest guidelines from the FIGO Ob/Gyn society, it is recommended that all women undergo iron testing “throughout their life,” especially during pregnancies, to combat this pervasive problem.

Since 2020, efforts have been underway to raise awareness about the seriousness of iron deficiency. The ramifications are substantial; women suffering from iron deficiency experience fatigue and cognitive impairment, while pregnant women face an increased risk of complications during childbirth. Moreover, babies born to mothers with iron deficiency are at risk of developmental issues, and the mothers themselves may experience postpartum depression.

racial inequalities in healthcare.

Traditional oral iron supplements often fall short in addressing iron deficiency due to poor absorption and insufficient iron content. Instead, iron infusions have emerged as a more effective and safer alternative, steadily gaining popularity among women and their healthcare providers.

However, overcoming this public health challenge requires addressing various barriers, including the lack of awareness, understanding, and access to infusion centers. In response, the establishment of Fem Iron Infusions Centers in 2021 has aimed to bridge these gaps. By offering education, telemedicine consultations, and iron infusions, these centers

have already made a significant impact, having administered 13,000 infusions and improved the lives of 6,000 women and their children.

Their team is made up of experienced and knowledgeable infusion nurses, advanced practice providers, and physicians. They are passionate about helping their patients achieve their health goals, and are committed to providing the highest quality care and customer service.

To tackle this epidemic collectively, it is imperative to encourage young women to undergo ferritin testing for iron levels, either through their healthcare providers or dedicated facilities like Fem Iron Infusions. Together, let us confront this pressing issue.

For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Heme On Call, a telemedicine-based hematology practice specializing in Women’s Health Hematology, at 786-567-8310 or visit us online at hemeoncall.com

This issue also exacerbates gender and racial inequalities. Women are expected to have lower blood hemoglobin levels than men, affecting their ability to concentrate at work and potentially leading to more missed days. Furthermore, teenage girls with low iron may struggle academically, perpetuating educational disparities. iron deficiency disproportionately affects Hispanic and African American women and their infants, highlighting broader

It’s Time To Register Sunny Isles Beach

There Are New Rules To Scoot Safe Throughout The City

Do you ride a motorized scooter in Sunny Isles Beach? If so, there’s a new requirement. The city has a new Motorized Scooter Registration Program to enhance your Safety and Security in Sunny Isles Beach. The new City Ordinance requires that all motorized scooters be registered with the City of Sunny Isles Beach. In addition, this Ordinance requires that all scooter riders follow traffic safety rules, including no tandem riding and wearing a helmet if under 16 years of age.

If you plan to operate your motorized scooter within city limits, it is now required to complete the Registration Process under Ordinance 2023-609. But here’s the good news – this registration is not just about following the rules; it’s about safeguarding your scooter. In the unfortunate event of theft and other security concerns, having your scooter registered can make all the difference.

Registering your scooter is easy as 1-23.Your can register your scooter in person March 23 at the Egg Scramble at Pelican Community Park - 18115 North Bay Road in Sunny Isles Beach,

If you prefer to register online, visit: sibfl.net/scootsafe. After completing the Online Registration Form, applicants will be mailed a Registration Decal. The Decal must be affixed to the scooter in a visible location. This Decal is like your scooter’s very own badge – simply pop it on the front of your scooter (we recommend within 12 inches from the top), and you’re ready to hit the road!

Decals are NOT transferable from one scooter to another. However, a Decal is transferable from one person to another when there has been a change in ownership of the scooter and in accordance with a change in the registration of the motorized scooter.

In addition to registration, this ordinance outlines some important rules for safe scooter operation. Here’s the scoop:

Follow Traffic Signals: Just like any other vehicle, riders must obey official traffic-control signals and signs. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and sound.

Speed Limit: Motorized scooters should not exceed 15 miles per hour on sidewalks and should not exceed 20 miles per hour on the roadway. It’s a fun ride, but let’s keep it safe.

If you haven’t registered your motorized

now is the time (Credit: https://www.facebook.com/sibpd/)

Safety First: If you’re under 16, don’t forget to wear your helmet. We’ve got your noggin covered!

Solo Ride: Scooters are meant for one person at a time, so it’s all about your solo adventure.

Ride With Traffic: Scooters must ride with the flow of traffic and follow traffic signals, using extra caution around intersections and driveways.

Stay in Line: If you are riding alongside another scooter rider, you must ride in a single file line.

Ears Open: While cruising, ditch the cell phone, headset, headphone, or listening device, except for a hearing aid. We need you to stay aware of your surroundings.

Be Visible: Your scooter should sport a reflective front white light, visible from 500 feet away, and a reflective rear red light, visible from 600 feet away. Safety first, even in the dark!

In addition to registration, all who operate a motorized scooter within the

City of Sunny Isles Beach must adhere to the rules set forth in Ordinance 2023-609.

Failure to do so may result in a citation.

For the first violation you will receive a written warning, for the second violation you will receive a minimum fine of $25.

For the third and Subsequent Violations there will be a minimum fine of $50, with a maximum penalty of $500 for a single violation.Violators may face non-criminal traffic or pedestrian infractions and officers have the authority to confiscate the scooter.

BROADWAY BEAT GOES ON

It’s like riding a bike! Once a dancer, always a dancer. And what an inspiration to watch 40 plus gorgeous, talented youngsters, ages 55 to 95, strut their stuff in “The New Florida Follies.” Playing to a packed house at The Parker in Ft. Lauderdale, “The Broadway Beat” opened with a warm welcome from the Follies Director/Choreographer, Cheryl Steinthal, a striking lady, outlining the outstanding charities they support devoted to the wellbeing of children. And now, as she says, on with the show ‘cause there’s no biz like show biz!

With an incredible bevy of beautiful babes, and a couple of good ‘ole boys, it was a rare treat to watch as they tapped and traversed in and out of dazzling, glitzy headdresses, and short sequined costumes, some of which were created by the gals themselves. Conversely, there was “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” from “South Pacific,” done in towels and headbands; to the umbrella routine from “Top Hat;” to the sexy black outfits with groovy gloves and garters from “Cabaret;” to the hip western shorts and cowboy hats from “Will Rogers Follies;” to a full stage vignette from “Into the Woods” to the very stylish blond and brunette coifs; down to the finest detail of proper dance foot-wear. All that with triads, synchronized lines and high kicks and the fastest costume changes and segues Flo Ziegfeld would ever have seen! These ladies, former Rockettes, showgirls and gypsies were the epitome of presentation, performance, and precision.

And now, the cherry on the top of this delicious, sweet confection; the appearance of Guest Stars: M&M, Michael Kessler and Melinda Jackson. Equipped with the longest legs ever, the gorgeous, magnificent Melinda graced the stage as if floating in the air, while muscular hunk, Michael, sang and danced his unique style. Suggesting that even Gower and Bennet, and Fosse came to mind, Michael’s rendition of “Rich Man” from “Fiddler” by far exceeded any other choreography; and the famous character, Tevye could have used some of those endearing moves! With some cheeky jazz in “Razzle Dazzle” from “Chicago;” high kicks, top hats and reminiscent steps from “One” in “A Chorus Line;” this showstopping duo shined with M&M’s interpretation of Broadway musicals with unequaled panache.

Melinda, on pointe, at the ballet barre, was joined by Michael, with the most exquisite patterns. They performed a highly sophisticated adaptation of “Do You Love Me” from “Fiddler,” emotionally packed with those meaningful lyrics and amazing moves that captured the talent, heart and love this couple generates.

Kudos to M&M; stars that brought a little Vegas to this already perfect show. In a flag filled finale, the company marched in formation with a salute to all

the branches of the Armed Forces, America, and the Great White Way. A standing ovation proved the “The Broadway Beat” goes on and ON!

Last chance to catch this feel-good show on Sunday March 24 at 2 PM at the Countess de Hoernle Theater, Boca Raton. Ticket info: https://newfloridafollies.yapsody.com Or call: (561) 619-6408.

Supah Cool Sammy World

She’s Zany, Fun Filled & Building Confidence In Children

In a world where children are influenced to imitate their favorite Social Media Celebrities or emulate the “cool kids” who are deemed pretty, wealthy, or popular, Miami-Dade County Early Childhood Educator and Author Samantha Michel founded a creative space where they are simply encouraged to be themselves.

“Always remember to be yourself,” said Michel, CEO and Creative Curator of Supah Cool Sammy World, a multidisciplinary arts, crafts, and storytelling business targeting children aged 3 to 10 who are enrolled in local schools. The moniker of her alter ego character– “Supah Cool Sammy” -- introduces a relatable presence to kids that captures their undivided attention and injects fun, whimsical elements into stories and art projects. Known for her characteristically zany, bright-colored costumes evoking elements of spring, joy, and energy, Michel hosts “Circle Carpet Storytelling” at the Northeast Dade - Aventura Branch Library on Saturdays each month not only to promote childhood literacy, but to offer a mentally stimulating environment where adolescents can feel free to think critically, ask questions, and express themselves without judgment.

The inclusiveness of Michel’s program is unique in that it is open to all ageappropriate children in the community, including those with Developmental Learning Disabilities such as Autism and ADHD. According to her philosophy, Supah Cool Sammy World Events are intended to build confidence, SelfEsteem, and Self-Sufficiency. “What inspired me was the need I saw for all children to explore more in a free-form space without feeling too restricted to be themselves, in an environment to get lost in their creativity either by enhancing it or finding it within.”

While building the curriculum for her business, Michel factored the preservation of childhood innocence into her programmatic model. In her mind, patience is a critical component of her approach to cultivating thoughtful engagement that should never be stifled by pressure or negative feedback. “When I notice a child is not finished exploring or creating but we (as adults) are ready for them to finish, we prevent that drive for them to create or invent something that can even change

Supah Cool Sammy World will be launching its first Spring Break project this March while children are out of school. Slots for 20 participants are open

for story time sessions, arts and crafts, watercolor painting, digital art, dramatic role play, and related activities. Michel remains focused on expanding the program’s reach in 2024 but admits that additional funding assistance is needed to bring the entirety of her vision to fruition. “I must say it takes a village to raise each child, so I will need extra meeting space that can accommodate children and family-centered events. A van for exploring field trips, along with donations for art supplies, would also be extremely helpful

in keeping the business and services running.”

Parents interested in inquiring about Supah Cool Sammy World for their children are encouraged to email Michel at for an updated activity schedule at: SupahCoolSammyWorld@gmail.com. The business can be followed on Instagram at: (@SupahCoolSammyWorld).

New Children’s Book HOLIDAYS ALL YEAR with POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance

Engages South Florida Communities with Cultural Diversity, Inclusion and Celebration

As part of the national book launch of the highly anticipated new book HOLIDAYS ALL YEAR with POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance, Award-Winning local Author and Broadway Director Neil Goldberg celebrates cultural diversity and inclusion throughout holidays all year with South Florida children, local organizations and worldwide. Upon release, the book immediately garnered critical acclaim, was a featured event at New York City’s premier children’s bookstore, Books of Wonder, and has been selected by the Children’s Book Council for its prestigious “Hot OffThe Press” list.

Commemorating Ramadan, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and Passover throughout March and April, the book’s fantastical characters will come to life and visit patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to read the story and give children books. At the Museum of Discovery & Science’s upcoming Easter Egg-Splorations event, the characters will meet and mingle with hundreds of kids and award special prizes of autographed books.

The characters will also bring their magic and books to the winners of the annual Winterfest Foundation’s Student Art contest. Additionally, books will be donated to the Broward Education Foundation for distribution to all Broward County elementary and middle schools with events, storytelling and holiday festivities scheduled throughout the calendar.

Neil Goldberg’s generous contributions and initiatives to engage children in reading, literature and the arts through cultural diversity, inclusion and his imaginative storytelling has been the foundation of the rapidly growing POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance brand and success since the first book release in 2021.

Growing up in an orthodox Jewish home in New York and attending Jewish schools, Neil had limited exposure to non-Jewish holidays. “I was aware of Christmas because of its colorful and decorative presence,” he says, which was reflected in the first POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance book adventure.

“I celebrated the Jewish holidays but traveling the world throughout my career and engaging with communities, cultures and different religions exposed and taught me to appreciate the rich tapestry of people, diversity and faiths that have many common characteristics in celebrations, festivals and gatherings. I wanted this book to depict that although there may be differences in beliefs, different beliefs can find common meaning in the world.”

So, in his second book HOLIDAYS ALLYEAR, diversity and inclusion through a child’s perspective introduces knowledge, customs, lessons and celebrations Neil yearned to learn as a child, and he is now able to share with others.

In HOLIDAYS ALL YEAR, best friends POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance wrap up their Christmas triumphs and find unique ways to share their music, magic and circus skills with holiday celebrations around the world, includ-

to brighten holidays all year by celebrating time-honored traditions with enlightening, charismatic and culturally diverse adventures.

I would recommend this book for families and children of many ages. It is a unique way to learn and appreciate different holidays. The wondrous characters are memorable and drawn into imaginatively composed, thoughtful and detailed illustrations. With an oversized hard cover, this book also makes for a youthful coffee table addition kids can reach for year-round.

The first book in the series, “POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance,” received 9 coveted book awards and

for the holiday film adaptation. It’s been gram, circulated in public school systems and libraries nationwide, and read by millions of families. The books are published and distributed by Brown Books Publishing Group and available in over 30,000 retail and online outlets or at: www.pompsnowandcirqueumstance .com

Read the books, see the show, meet the characters and cuddle up with the adorable plush dolls for the ultimate POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance immersive experience.

A Survivor’s Reflection

Holocaust Survivor Zoltan “Saul” Blau Recounts History At Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center

“I am here because I know a little bit about Antisemitism, and also a little bit about Auschwitz because I was there at age 13. Not a visitor. I was a prisoner there.”

To recognize International Holocaust Remembrance Day, hundreds of students from Don Soffer Aventura High School expeditiously filed into the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center on Thursday, January 25th, 2024 to listen to first-hand accounts from Zoltan “Saul” Blau, one of the remaining Holocaust survivors of German-Occupied Poland’s AuschwitzBirkenau Nazi Concentration Camp.

Much like the Serial Number: A-3913 that remains emblazoned on his arm, the evocative personal reflections of the 92year-old Aventura Resident were also brought to life while he recounted the dire conditions and terrifying imprisonment he endured back in 1944, painting a mental picture of helpless vulnerability and raw trepidation. Upon arrival at the Camp, he described his immediate separation from his parents and younger sister – who lost their lives shortly after entering the facility– and his imminent fight for survival as a child coal miner until the moment he was liberated by the U.S. Armed Forces in 1945.

Though Remembrance Day is globally acknowledged on January 27th – which marked the 79-Year Anniversary of the Historic Liberation of the Concentration Camp – students in attendance listened intently about the deplorable, paralyzingly uncertain environment in which Saul lived. Despite the nature of his past, he concluded his presentation by emphasizing the significance of sharing authentic stories with diverse groups in hopes of building bridges promoting inclusivity while offering universal opportunities to learn about human nature so as not to repeat past afflictions.

Over 6 million Jewish men and women were victimized by the Holocaust, not to mention millions more who were persecuted by the Nazis.Though many would agree that Antisemitism existed beneath the surface for decades since the Holocaust, instances of Hate and Discrimination against the Jewish Community have been rising at alarming rates. Now more than ever before, we must recognize the critical lessons

survivors.

Aventura city leaders are committed to acknowledging the intergenerational effects of the Holocaust by teaching the community about the truth, and bringing authentic, individual voices to the forefront who can shed light on current

events shaping the future. Program organizers ended the Remembrance Day event by reading the names of Holocaust Victims, recognizing their memory with a moment of silence and symbolizing their presence by ceremoniously lighting candles. While acts of Dehumanization and Hate still affect our surrounding communities each day, it is up to each of us to

confront such instances with intolerance, propose solutions to accept each other’s differences, and provide education to accurately remember world issues that have shaped the evolution of humanity.

LOVE, AVENTURA.

A column celebrating the heart, soul and culture of our community.

Ride “The Cloud” In Hallandale Beach

A Transit System That’s As Reliable As It Is Eco-Friendly

Say hello to the very first fully-wrapped electric bus coming soon to the city of Hallandale Beach! This sleek addition is just the beginning of the zeroemissions fleet, aptly named “The Cloud.”

Hallandale Beach is the gateway of Broward County in sunny south Florida, a city pulsating with life and innovation.

Progress continues to be at the forefront of this City, as Hallandale Beach proudly announces the acquisition of

nine (9) cutting-edge electric buses, the largest electric bus fleet owned by any municipality in Florida. The all-electric fleet isn’t just about upgrading transit; it’s about shaping a safe, reliable, and environmentally conscious community.

Thanks to a generous grant from the State of Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) totaling $3,406,828 million, complemented by a matching contribution of $2.5 million from the city, $1,937,128 of that being a contribution towards the purchase of buses and asso-

ciated charging infrastructure from the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, making the total investment in this electric bus fleet a whopping $5,906,828.

This visionary initiative is a testament to Hallandale Beach’s commitment to a higher quality of life. The City has contracted new customer-focused drivers, expanded bus routes, and

increased the size of its community buses. The Cloud will replace the City’s community shuttle service, offering more seating and standing capacity and cleaner vehicles inside and out. The previous Hallandale Minibus Routes, which serve as essential connections for residents to key destinations, will also transform with the introduction of these electric buses.

What this means for Hallandale Beach residents is cleaner air, a reduced carbon footprint, and a transit system that’s as reliable as it is eco-friendly. By embracing clean, electric power, the city is paving the way for a healthier environment and progressive future. The Cloud will enhance the transit experience, encouraging more residents to choose public transportation.

Hallandale Beach is a city forging a path towards a greener, more vibrant tomorrow. The Cloud bus fleet will begin operations in early April of this year. For more information about bus routes and more call (954) 451-2220 Option 6.

Serving In More Ways Than One

The Miami Native Got To Play Tennis & Serve Her Country

Lieutenant, Claudia Mackenzie, a native of Miami, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Naval InformationWarfare Center (NIWC) Pacific.

Mackenzie graduated from Ransom Everglades School in 2014. Mackenzie also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2018.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Miami.

“Being from Miami taught me how to work with people from all different backgrounds, cultures and life experiences,” said Mackenzie. “I think that’s helped me a lot in the Navy because we constantly experience that on the day-to-day and being able to find a common ground with somebody that you might not share a lot with helps the team succeed.”

Mackenzie joined the Navy six years ago. Today, Mackenzie serves as a SurfaceWarfare Officer.

“I was recruited to play Tennis at the Naval Academy,” said Mackenzie. “My grandfather served in the British Army, so I knew that I wanted to serve at some point as well. The Naval Academy offered a great education, I was able to play Division I Sports and I got to serve. So it hit all the wickets.”

NIWC Pacific is composed of more than 5,200 Scientists, Researchers, Engineers, Technicians and Personnel who Develop and Deploy Technologies to SupportWarfighters from Seabed to Space.

With 90% of Global Commerce traveling by Sea and Access to the Internet relying on the Security of Undersea Fiber Optic Cables, Navy Officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Mackenzie has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“Seeing all my sailors succeed, promote, get qualified and earn awards has probably been the most rewarding thing for me,” said Mackenzie. “My job is to look out for them. When they succeed, that means I’m doing my job well.”

Mackenzie serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.

“Serving in the Navy means a lot to me,” said Mackenzie. “It has allowed me to grow as an individual, in personal aspects of my life but also professionally. I’ve been able to challenge myself and I’ve learned I’m much more capable than I thought I was.”
