Three Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School athletes participated in the state Special Olympics. HBPD/PAL team won a squeaker in the end 65-61. Hallandale teachers were impressive as they were winning most of the game, until a comeback starting the fourth quarter. When it comes to raising money, there are many in this community who continue to step up and do their part. Recently, the Hallandale Beach Relay For Life was hosted at Peter Bluesten Park. In addition to the great things that went on during the 18 hours of fund-raising was impressive - with many taking part in the yearly American Cancer Society event. Even though much of the focus was on those who raised money and supported the cancer survivors in attendance, understanding that this a year-round commitment was brought into focus during the APPLES vs BACON basketball fundraiser at Hallandale Senior High School. Officer Chris Taylor coordinated the team of Hallandale Beach Police Department/Police Atheltic League Staff/PAL Sponsors and Stephen Carlo (Gulfstream Middle School teacher) coordinated the team of Hallandale Teachers/Staff/ Coaches. Carlo has served as the Relay For Life chairman and has done tremendous. HBPD/PAL team won a squeaker in the end 65-61. Hallandale teachers were impressive as they were winning most of the game, until a comeback starting the fourth quarter. Flanigan's Bar and Grill in Hallandale Beach donated over 200 chicken wings. General Manager Kathy Jones of Flanigan's of Hallandale Beach is a constant supporter for Police fundraisers. There was an eye popping slam dunk contest that got the crowd loud as Lavar Miller (Store Director of Winn Dixie on East Hallandale Beach Blvd.) won with numerous impressive dunks! Miller also donated chicken wings, cookies, and drinks for the event. Miller was an All American in Basketball and Track at the University of Arkansas and continues to donate any way he can to P.A.L. Steve Allen, who owns Kingdom Training, was also on hand with

the police. He advised Officer Taylor that Kingdom Training training will be making a cash donation for the event. Kingdom Training provides basketball lessons and focuses on self esteem to young kids. Allen grew up in South Florida and is giving back to his community. Adriel Davis (former Gator basketball player and now Author) also was on hand participating and selling his new book "Pen to Paper". "I would like to express my sincere thanks to all who participated," said Officer Taylor. "Flanigan's, Winn Dixie, the Hallandale Beach Police Explorers, and all volunteers who helped make this event possible to raise money for such a great cause."
