President’s Letter Welcome to the 20th Annual Delmarva Folk Festival!!

After the stage darkens for another year, the campfire musicians get started. Some of them will be ones you heard from the stage. So pull up a chair or a log, wrap up with a blanket and enjoy the autumn air and the continuous music. Does anyone have s’more fixin’s? We encourage you to be safe…. and responsible. Mostly we want you to relax and have fun. Check out the vendors or take a chance on the amazing instruments that were especially made for our 20th anniversary.

The entire Board of the Delaware Friends of Folk is delighted that you are here to help us celebrate 20 years of bringing this unique, intimate festival to the Delmarva Peninsula. This year’s schedule will reflect some of the finest musicians we had the pleasure to host over the past 20 years. We hope you enjoy this eclectic panorama of sound. We welcome the musicians that come from near and far to be with us this year – we know that you will find old and new fans to share your sound with.

Friday night will be the final round of the Delmarva Folk Hero Contest. Musicians have competed at July and August coffeehouses to win a coveted slot in this Friday night tradition.

That selection was made by audience vote on those summer nights. Friday night, again, we will be asking for the audience to select their favorite performer. That person or persons will have a slot on the main stage of Saturday’s lineup in addition to an impressive prize package that includes cash, recording time and a photo shoot. This unique competition is becoming so popular that we will be adding another round of performers next year to the 2012 Delmarva Folk Hero contest. I almost always add an “s” to ‘hero’ in that competition name since I feel that all of the participants are worthy of that title. According to the Webster’s Dictionary, a hero is a person admired for brave deeds and noble qualities. Its synonyms are listed as adventurer, explorer and celebrity. While some may say that it is not brave to get up on stage and perform your music, I say that it is the noblest and most courageous of deeds to pursue your dreams. The adventure that performing artists take on is to explore their hearts and minds to find that phrase, that song, that series of notes that will move those that are graced to hear them. That can be a frightening and awesome trek. We hope that we send you on your way toward a path of celebrity.

Congratulations to all of the participants, and especially the finalists, on your noble journeys.

I would be remiss if I did not tell you that none of this would happen were it not for an extraordinary group of hardworking volunteers and the co-chairs of the festival, Storm Longhauser (you have seen him – long sleeved, tie dyed shirt and a ponytail checking on everything) and Mary Zeller (a great smile - usually found in the merchandising tent, bringing in sales and making sure everyone feels welcome and appreciated).

Thanks to them, the paths got cleared, the lights were strung, this fantastic program was printed, the advertising got out, the cars got parked and so much more. Please think about joining the volunteers next year – you get to hear the music for free and get paid in laughter and warm feelings. Storm and Mary – ‘Thank You’ seems inadequate but it is heartfelt and soul deep.

Lonnie and Sonja, our hosts all these years, your generosity is awesome. Our gratitude is monumental.

Saturday’s music starts with Richard Shockley and then we present this year’s Folk Hero. After that we will progress down memory lane with some of our past (and present) favorites like Celtic Harvest, John and Vickie LeCroy, and Sand Creek. There will be a performance at the kids’ tent by Rick Hudson and a guitar workshop by Pete Kennedy (thanks to a grant from the Kent County Council for the Arts!). Then Red Letter Day, Nothin’ But Trouble, Dean Sapp and the Harford Express will take main stage followed by Bob Beach and his friends and finally The Kennedys. Can you imagine all of that in one day?

We would like to give a warm welcome to all our friends from out of town- that is anyone outside Hartly town limits. Our southern friends from North & South Carolina are planning to be here. We always look forward to their southern style fish fry on Friday night. This has become an annual event and we encourage folks to check them out. These guys catch their own crabs, shrimp and fish to cook their own way, which, by the way, will cause your tongue to slap your brains out. You will find their campsite in the back of the parking area to the left of the pond. Just follow your nose. Please offer them a donation for the generous portion of food you will receive as this helps these guys with their travel expenses. We all know that gasoline is not cheap.

The last work weekend preparing for the 20th Annual Delmarva Folk Festival is over and as we sat near the campfire, one of the original members of our organization asked me, “Can you really believe this is our 20th festival?” . I had to admit, I did not know where the time goes.

I am looking forward to performing at the festival with my Sand Creek Gang. When Sand Creek has more than 3 members we become the Sand Creek Gang, clever, huh? I am blessed to have so many wonderful, talented friends. I like to invite as many as possible onto the stage. I know this sometimes creates a nightmare for Paul, our sound man, but he is usually pretty forgiving.

We pretty well have the festival grounds prepared for what we hope is going to be a record crowd. Of course, I still get butterflies as the date of the festival draws closer, watching the weather three times a day, praying that it does not rain. I am truly grateful for the dedicated workers who show up ready to do whatever job is assigned to them. We have all become like one big family, each with their own task, laughing, joking and wearing a big smile. I am sure our dear friend Greg Shrader is looking down on us and I am sure he is giving us the old “Job Well Done”. How I miss him.

In a recent interview with our drummer, “Ossi Beckie” (Ossi Becke), he claims to hold the record for playing with more bands at this festival than anyone. GO Ossi !! We love you, brother.

So, Sandy Denny, if you are there listening, we agree Who Knows Where the Time Goes.

In closing, we would like to thank all our friends and family members who have attended and donated their time and resources from the first festival until this 20 year celebration. We love you all and hope you have a great time at the 20th Annual Delmarva Folk Festival.

Friday 7:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Vin Fischer Vin was last year’s winner. He won’t appear on your ballot. Here, he’ll lead off tonight’s contest. This guy is going places. He not only won our contest last year, he also won the 2011 Rehoboth Has Talent competition.

Vin is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Columbia, PA who now resides in the Rehoboth Beach, DE area. He has performed in over 50 venues in 15 states, and the list continues to grow.

His style is alternative folk, inspired by variations of indie, folk, alternative, and punk genres. He plays guitar with harmonica and bass drum as an accompaniment.

Vin is currently ranked #1 on the folk charts for Delaware by ReverbNation. His unique sound and memorable lyrics are quickly gaining him a regional and national reputation.

Friday 7:30 . . . . . . . . . . . Thumper & (maybe) Jean Frank “Thumper” Eicherly, whom you may know as the captain of the Maggie S. Myers - the oldest schooner working on the Delaware Bay at 118-years-old.

Thumper & his wife, Jean Friend, both of Bowers Beach, began singing spiritual song in churches. They progressed into varieties of sea shanties & folk songs, encouraging people to take care of our oceans, rivers & inland bays. They continue to promote our maritime heritage.

Stolen Child .......so I was wandering down by the bonny banks of the mighty Tyne one crisp day in June, whistling “Home, Newcastle” to meself, headed for the shrine that is St. James Park, with nothing but the birds and the bees for company, when suddenly I heard this voice sailing across the quay....the voice became louder and more beautiful the closer it came......I walked towards the voice, held by its beauty, ‘til finally we came face to face.....”Me names Keith” I said. “Jessica”, the voice said. “Let me play guitar for you” I asked. “Sure” was the reply.

Friday 8:30 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kevin Sarkissian Kevin Sarkissian started playing the guitar and writing music when he was a teenager. He was heavily influenced by the songs of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. He compares writing a song to taking a picture. Some people use a camera to capture a special moment in their lives - he writes a song. To date he has written a great number of songs – some serious, some humorous - yet always from the heart! Recent accomplishments include 1st runner-up in the 2010 “Smyrna’s Got Voice” contest and a finalist in the 2011 Singer/Songwriter Competition at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware. He sings regularly with his wife Clare at local churches. He also performs occasionally at local pubs and restaurants in the Tri-State area.

Friday 9:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Honey Badgers Sometimes, a voice will hit you unexpectedly and come across all at once as pure and refined and innocent. This is what happened when the duet known as The Honey Badgers met in 2007. It took a few years of convincing, but eventually folksong writer Michael Natrin won over Erin Magnin. She joined him with her violin and vocal chords, and after rehearsing and writing together for less than a year, they officially became The Honey Badgers.

Mixing her jazzy soprano with his folksy sailor tunes, they began performing to very responsive crowds. With their upcoming EP release entitled Booth Bay, they plan to bring you along with them to a very authentic and harmonious musical destination.”

Casey Jane Casey Jane is a singer/songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania whose style could fall under the categories of country, pop, alternative or folk. She lists some of her biggest influences as Saving Jane, Jessica Harp, Miranda Lambert, Toby Lightman, Matt Nathanson, Jonathan Clay, Kelly Clarkson and Michelle Branch.

Casey has played in over fifteen venues in ten states, including a writer’s night in Nashville, TN for the Nashville Music Group in the spring of 2011. She released her first EP, “Drive” in August 2011 available at http://caseyjane.bandcamp.com/

Friday 10:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Salvage Kin We are Salvage Kin. Salvage (n) the rescue of a wrecked or disabled ship or its cargo from loss at sea.

Salvage Kin is a trio from Hartly, Delaware consisting of Matt and Tracey Peters, accompanied by Audrey Moore. Though they had all been playing music separately for years, the group just began writing and performing together in 2010, mostly at coffee shops, house shows, and local venues. With strong harmonies accompanied by light acoustics, their style is mostly indie-folk with a hint of jazz. With a unique campfire-friendly sound, they sing songs about life, love, and God; both in good times and bad. Lyrically they will make you think, laugh, and cry. Musically, they may lull you to sleep (in a good way). No CD’s have been put out yet, but a 5 song EP is currently in the works.

Saturday 12:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Richard Shockley In 1992 Richard was approached by Lonnie Field to help organize a folk festival on Lonnie’s farm. Later, during festival organization, Lonnie stated, “We are looking for a bluegrass/country band.” Richard enlisted his father’s band, Traveling Country, and they were listed on the bill as the act to open the festival.

Richard, the emcee for the festival that entire day, introduced his father, Maurice Shockley and his band, with that the Delmarva Folk Festival (known then as “The Fall Fling”) had begun. So, today, in recognition of Maurice Shockley’s contribution to that festival and the Delaware Friends of Folk, Richard opens the 20th Annual Festival.

Richard’s style of music is not the same as his father’s, but Maurice’s influence will definitely be present in Richard’s performance. Richard, a classic rock fan of acts like Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath, and Rare Earth, is a folk and country boy at heart and plays the music of Hank Williams, John Denver, Jim Croce, Neil Young and others of that genre. He appears today to pay tribute to his father, who passed away in 2008, and the Maurice Shockley Scholarship Fund which was established 2009 by the Delaware Friends of Folk.

Celtic Harvest is Dover’s own Irish Traditional Music band, featuring 5 multi-instrumentalists and lots of singing. The band includes Kathy Doyle (piano, guitar and voice), Jim McGiffin (guitar, banjo, basses, bodhran and voice), Mike Neilsen (bouzouki, harp, voice), Jan Crumpley (flutes, whistles, concertina) and Kelly Crumpley (fiddle, whistles, bodhran). Celtic Harvest plays traditional dance tunes from Ireland and Scotland and sings songs from Ireland , Scotland, England, Canada, Australia and the United States of America.

Sometimes spirited and sometimes melancholy, Celtic Harvest is always entertaining.

The core of Celtic Harvest formed in the band Dover Mountain, a group devoted to American folk and acoustic music.

Dover Mountain performed traditional and original music in and around the Delmarva peninsula, and as far away as Ireland, from about 1995 until 2002. Celtic Harvest has welcomed back to the stage Dover Mountain members John Kidd and Tony Armstrong to play a few songs in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Delmarva Folk Festival.

Saturday 2:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John & Vickie LeCroy

John and Vickie LeCroy have been bringing a fun and unique array of musical styles to audiences for well over two decades. Vickie’s pure vocals and stellar violin playing complement John’s distinctive southern-style vocals and accomplished guitar work. Together, they cover a wide range of styles from ethnic to old-time with their long suit in fun American Songbook tunes from the 1930’s-50’s.

John and Vickie will be familiar to many of the festival audience – they are long-time members of the Delaware Friends of Folk, and John served as the second Chairman of the organization (following Greg Shrader) for 8 years in the 1990’s. As always, they’ll be joined in today’s performance by an ad hoc assortment of excellent musician friends from the area. John and Vickie currently reside in Jackson Tennessee, within easy striking distance of Nashville.

Saturday 3:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sand Creek Gang Sand Creek, in one form or another, has been making music since 1978. Along with Lonnie Field, great songs, players, singers, songwriters, and friends have been the constants. If Lonnie doesn’t play, it’s not Sand Creek, and if Lonnie does play, more than likely it is Sand Creek. This band, with all of its changes, has in many ways been the interpreter of Lonnie’s music. Some consider Sand Creek to be the “house band” at the Delmarva Folk Festival.

Dave is the new guy in the Creek, adding tasty lead and rhythm guitar while standing downstream from the rest.

He has lately grown very fond of a certain “Blondie”.

(Lonnie’s guitar loaner) Dave’s talents are in high demand as a side player in several other groups and he is also an expert sound technician.

Sand Creek’s music is a mix of contemporary folk, blues, bluegrass, country, and rock. Influences on their music style come from a broad range. From Steve Goodman and John Prine, to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, to Jimmy Buffett, The Band, Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waites, Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon, Hank Williams, Woodie Guthrie, and Minnie Moore.

Warm, intimate, funny, and in-your-face original songs, together with spirited playing and melt-in-yourmouth harmonies have been with the band since the beginning. Lonnie’s songs are a mixture of humor and satire from real life experiences. Some of the songs will hit close to home. Others will take you far away. All are sure to give you a new way to look at the world.

Deloy was an early member of the Sand Creek Gang, drifted away on his many other band and solo projects, and has only lately fallen back in the Creek. He’s a multi-instrumentalist in the truest sense, likely migrating from guitar to mandolin to dobro to banjo and back to guitar in one set. And Deloy is also an accomplished songwriter and might be coaxed into offering one or two of his own.

John got fully immersed around 1999 and hasn’t crawled out yet. He adds harmonica, vocals, and percussion in support of the guys up front. Together, their individual musical talents

Saturday 5:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Red Letter Day Now, more than two decades into their career, the six time WAMA nominated duo Red Letter Day – Suzanna Mallow and Andrea Jones is gearing up for another recording. It’s been 11 years since Beefcandy was released and they will be recording another live CD with many of the old favorites that never got recorded and a couple new ones thrown in too. In addition, they decided to do it duo style, without a lot of production added to it. Much like they began their musical career with Owen Hooks by their side.

Red Letter Day continued to perform close to home.

We are excited to announce that the Publishing side of AMI inc, is finally being nourished and you will be able to see and read what is going on by checking out the page, “Are you an artist looking for songs?”. AJ will be operating the publishing company, and any dealings with AMI Publishing while Suzanna will continue to operate ami studios.

Red Letter Day has some exciting gigs coming up soon: Folk Festivals, Prides, the Birchmere, (see “SHOWS” page) There are plans now for reunion shows with Lex Price, Ossi Becke and Lori Boyd in the near future.

There really is no better way to describe the RLD experience...moving effortlessly between genres of folk, pop, country, and blues and all with lots of harmony and heart. Red Letter Day balances out a show usually with a bit of harmonica, saxophone, percussion, bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar all distinctly different in sound and delivery. What grabs the attention of the “soon to become followers” right from the start is the solid songwriting that sooths, seduces, cracks you up, or scream your inner emotions into action. Action, in the sense that RLD’s music is music that is heard and felt right down to the last string holding your heart together!

Multi-instrumentalists, is an understatement after seeing this duo live, RLD’s amazing versatility became re-known not only to their audiences but it has also turned the heads of many fellow musicians.

In the Beginning The summer of 1990 began the rumblings of a group that would bond together and form a group started out as, the Eclectics. The Eclectics soon became a trio of songwriters and took the name, Red Letter Day (RLD).

From an early RLD history that included practicing in abandoned buildings, Owen Hooks, (vocals, guitar), Suzanna Mallow, (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica), and Andrea Jones, (vocals, saxophone, bass, harmonica, recorder, percussion) had burst onto the music scene like a streak of lightning. In fact, it was with sadness that Hooks had to choose between the group and his family since RLD was getting noticed around the country. Mallow and Jones quickly quit their day jobs, and continued to ride the excitement.

Not only did they write their own music, they also incorporated their own independent record label and called it Antwinnie Music Inc. It was named after Mallow’s Aunt that left her a small sum of money that got them started with some needed equipment.

After shopping some of the smaller record companies, Mallow and Jones agreed they could do more for themselves on their own independent record company and since that decision, they never looked back.

RLD is also known for their ability to combine song-writing, and musicianship with an engaging stage performance that appeals to all ages. They have changed the lineup over the years several times, but always maintained the core duo. Since Red Letter Day’s inception, they have produced four acclaimed CD’s that have enabled them to spread their infectious sound up and down the East Coast and mid Atlantic Region to gain a devoted and loving following. Antwinnie Music Inc. has provided worldwide distribution and radio Red Letter Day from airplay during peak hours our 1995 program on stations to numerous to mention. Suzanna took over AMI Studios when Andrea was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, and continues to maintain and manage the studio herself on the campus of Salisbury University. AMI Studios is a division of Antwinnie Music Inc. Andrea became focused on her recovery, and also went through a Masters Degree Program while going through treatment. It wasn’t too much longer before Suzanna had her son, Gaje, and, in 2007 Andrea had her son, Christopher. In 2008, AJ announced her remission from cancer. Although AJ and Suzanna had not been traveling much at all, it was when her son arrived when she faced the reality that she would be unable to travel with RLD for quite awhile. Saturday 7:00 . . . . Dean Sapp & the Harford Express to do songwriting workshops at festivals where the group performs. Dean heads up the Harford Express playing the banjo. His first love. Dean’s style of Banjo playing comes from his watching and listening to Earl Scruggs during his childhood formative years at the legendary Sun Set Park in West Grove, PA. A proprietor of a ‘stringed instruments only’ music shop, Dean is also a Martin Guitars factory warranty repairman. And too many others to list here. His ‘Old Train Musical Instruments’ custom made guitars take their name from his “Old Train Music” record label which also records other bluegrass acts in the Mid-Atlantic area. The ‘Evening of Bluegrass Concert’ series has established Dean as a promoter of family style bluegrass on the Delmarva Peninsula, providing another much needed off season venue for nationally known acts. Backed by the Harford Express (formed in 1986), Dean Sapp, banjo in hand fronts a group that can play at any audience, from county fairs to concert halls, festival stages to churches. Outstanding original music, old favorites, creative cover songs, tight harmonies, hot pickin’, and a good dose of fun make Dean Sapp & the Harford Express - the real sound of Bluegrass!

Dean Sapp grew up in a family whose musical roots go back to the beginnings of bluegrass music. His picking started at age 6 on guitar, moved to banjo at age 8, and continued to evolve throughout his formative years. Taught by his uncle (the late Sonny Miller), his brother (John Miller, Jr.) and his grandfather (John Miller, Sr.), Dean has honed his singing, picking, and songwriting to what one reviewer has written: “Is it going out on a limb to credit Dean Sapp as one of most underrated singers on bluegrass today? No, it isn’t. If you love mainstream grass, just give a listen to the man from the shores of the Chesapeake.”.

With fifteen recording projects to his credit, Sapp has earned the respect of his songwriting peers in the bluegrass genre.

Original material with a sound that Bluegrass Unlimited says “sounds like it could have been written 30 or 40 years ago the base on which each project is based, built upon with solid cover songs and driving instrumentals”. A 14 day tour of Australia, and appearances at I.B.M.A.’s Songwriter Showcase validate the strength of Sapp’s songwriting. He is often called upon

Bob Beach has been a working professional musician for more than 40 years, adding harmonica, flute and vocals to a broad scope of genres. A native Philadelphian, Bob relocated to Western PA after high school. From 1976 to 1997 Bob worked in bands and other musical projects based in the city of Pittsburgh. Since returning to Philadelphia in 1997 Bob has been a vital part of the local music scene. As a sideman he has recorded or performed with both local and national acts such as; Ollabelle, Langhorne Slim, the Avett Brothers, Pat Wictor, Beaucoup Blue, Fruit and many more. Bob performs live with the Bob Beach Trio, Mason Porter, Lizanne Knott, Wyldlyfe, Hezekiah Jones, Spinning Leaves, the Cat’s Pajamas, Philadelphia Jug Band, the Youngers, Hoots and Hellmouth, David Jacobs-Strain, and others. David and Bob recently released “Live From the Left Coast” recorded in Eugene, Oregon. Bob will be joined by fellow Jug Band member Jim Klingler on guitar.

Open to every moment, the much-traveled married duo of Pete and Maura Kennedy have spun their personal experiences, musical influences and philosophical beliefs into nine previous albums of winsome original songs, frequently seasoned with exquisitely-performed cover tunes, that blend acoustic-based folk, rock, country, pop and secular gospel into an inclusively delightful sound that’s all their own.

After celebrating some of their favorite “road music” by other songwriters on their previous CD, Songs of the Open Road, Pete and Maura have recorded Better Dreams, their first CD of all-original material in seven years, inspired by a pair of seminars they conducted on “using dreams to unlock your creativity.”

“We found that we were writing really interesting songs in and around the workshop sessions,” they explain. “All of these songs have something to do with the dreamtime,” where “we have a different kind of freedom there.”

Time and space become fluid in the dreams The Kennedys have translated into these songs. The cleansing “eternal now” flows through the CD-opening “Breathe,” which counsels, “Breathe into a new life, breathe out all the old times.” The tricky path to love is illuminated on “I Found a Road” and “Light My Way.” Real life nightmares rush into folk history (“Sago Mine,” about the January 2006 mining disaster in West Virginia) or flood the modern day (both “Give Me Back My Country” and “American Wish” lament the draining of civil liberties in post-9/11 America). The dream state itself can be a lifeboat (as on the Eastern-tinged title song and “In My Dreams”), an exhausting anchor (“No Mornings”), or, to mix metaphors, an exhilarating rocket ride to a metaphysical sock-hop (“Speed of Soul”). Appropriately, the CD concludes with an ethereal, near wordless hymn to the ultimate dream – peace (“Pacé”) Whatever the scenario, The Kennedys use their full palette of vocal and instrumental colors to bring their songs to glowing life. Maura’s lead vocals range from comforting to yearning, from girlish to womanly, from exuberant to delicate, sometimes bolstered by her own sweet harmonies and those of Pete and several guests. As usual, multi-instrumentalist Pete provides a vibrant tapestry of chiming, jangling and twanging guitars, as well as mandolin, keyboards, bass and drums, interwoven with Maura’s sturdy acoustic rhythm guitar, harmonica and glockenspiel.

You can also discern the influence here of two recent Kennedys side projects – there’s a new prominence given to the electric sitar and twinkling ukulele that are respectively featured elsewhere in The Strangelings, their “British folk/ psychedelic” quintet, and in The Stringbusters, Pete and Maura’s ukulele duo devoted to jazz, classical and pop.

To again quote “Breathe,” listening to each new Kennedys recording is “just like being born, but you’re wiser this time.” Meaningful songs, gorgeous vocals, wizardly instrumentation . . . they all add up to better dreams – asleep or awake – for everyone fortunate enough to hear them.
