BOYD CAVE (pictured) is a lava tube located 25 minutes from Sunriver, which is open year-round to the public.

ORMED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO from the flows of the Newberry Volcano, Boyd Cave is approximately 2,000 feet in length and 20 feet below the earth’s surface. The cave is situated northeast of Sunriver and is open every day of the year, completely free to the public. Headlamps or flashlights are necessary for exploring this underground wonder, unless, of course, you would prefer being submerged in sheer darkness! The only light that shines into the cave comes from the entrance, which is accessible by a flight of metal stairs that descend from a 10 foot-wide hole in the ceiling. The height of the cave varies througout, ranging from 8-10 feet in the tallest areas, and less than 3 feet in others. Most importantly, the cave is quite cold! It’s crucial to bring layers of warm clothes, as the temperature in the cave averages 42 degrees Farenheit.
