Pickleball

Lifestyle Update

Pickleball is still the fastest-growing sport in the USA. It is said that 4.8 million people played pickleball in 2021, but did you know that between August 2021 to August 2022 that 36.5 million people played pickleball in the U.S.A? Participants have typically been older in the past, where half of the serious players in 2021 were fifty-five and older. However, the vast majority of casual players are under fifty-five, and the fastest-growing segment of players are under the age of twenty-four. Those are some amazing stats! Many of our Residents play Pickleball, and in fact, it is the largest Club in SRSG.

I was driving to work and heard about an exciting tournament coming up in the spring and realized that many Residents may already be aware of the upcoming Pickleball match between tennis legends John McEnroe and Andre Agassi for a million-dollar purse. This tournament, the Pickleball Slam, will also feature Grand Slam champions Andy Roddick and Michael Chang. Roddick vs Chang will take place prior to McEnroe vs Agassi. After the two single matches, a double match will occur with McEnroe and Change vs Roddick and Agassi. This all-star tournament will be held on April 2, 2023, in Hollywood, Florida at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. If you are interested in traveling to the tournament, there is also an amateur challenge on March 31st through April 1st, and ninety-six double teams will be completing for prize money of $10,000 and an opportunity to complete against the four tennis legends prior to the main event. Who knows, maybe some of our very own Residents will play in this tournament someday. The main event will also be airing on ESPN, which should be fun to watch for those who are not willing to travel such a distance but are interested in watching the event.

While it is fun to watch, why not get out and try the sport? If you want to see what all the buzz is about, we encourage you head to the courts. The SRSG Pickleball Club offers a variety of lessons, and there are many different levels of players on the courts. One of the best parts about living in SunRiver St George is the wide variety of activities that keep you active and increase your quality of life, and pickleball is definitely one of those activities. There are those who say that it is so much fun, and you are laughing so much that you do not even realize you are getting exercise. Living where we do, the opportunities to play pickleball outside are available all year, and there are so many benefits to doing activities outdoors. It is more difficult in some areas of the country in the winter, like where my family lives in Alaska.

One other wonderful thing about this sport is that it can span across several generations, which means you can play it with your kids and grandkids. When my parents visit, my son and I can play with them and have an incredibly fun and competitive game. I hope if you are physically able, and have not tried pickleball yet, you will give it a try and see why so many are obsessed with this game.

Getting enough rest?

Many Americans suffer from insomnia, which negatively impacts a person’s quality of life and health. Getting enough sleep helps your immune system and other areas of your health. Many times, stress can be a big contributor to the causes of lack of sleep. Dr. Mithri Junna, M.D., who specializes in neurophysiology, epilepsy, and sleep medicine at the Mayo Clinic has some suggestions. She states that setting aside ‘worry time’ during the day can allow you to focus on stressful thoughts and worries that may occupy your mind when trying to fall asleep or even interrupt you during sleep. During your worry time, she suggests that thoughts and concerns should be written down, then think through solutions. You should also remember that it is within your power to let go of things outside your ability to influence. Make your worry session constructive and solution based. Then, after writing down your worries, some good questions to ask yourself include:

2

Can I make a concrete plan to resolve this worry?

• Have I already successfully dealt with this or a similar worry in the past?

• Is this worry legitimate? Will it matter five years from now?

• What might an optimist say about this situation?

When these thoughts or worries return as you are trying to fall asleep or stay asleep, remind yourself that you have set aside time to work through your worries during the day, so your mind can feel permitted to go to sleep.

Daylight Savings

It’s that time again to change your clocks! Set a reminder on March 11th, when you go to bed, as it will take place at 2am on Sunday, March 12th. Many states are looking at getting rid of Daylight Savings. Are you in favor of permanent daylight savings? Do you feel you enjoy an hour extra to sleep in the fall? Per the Washington Post, November 4th, 2022, article: research shows that extended evening daylight hours in the spring have crime rates that go down. Robberies were reduced by 7% from the day prior and overall crime went down by 27% with the additional sunlight gained that day and evening.

Do you know the two states in the union who do not observe daylight savings? Send the answers to SR-Admin@PMPmanage.com for a gift card to the Poolside Café for a free lunch.

Food Truck – Spring Choices

We are excited to get back to our warmer weather, and that means we will once again offer two food truck choices each food truck day through the spring months. Double the fun, double the delicious food. Stop by and support these hardworking vendors and enjoy more variety. When it is warmer, we will also be setting up chairs and tables so you can sit and enjoy time with friends.

Shakespeare Festival Questionnaire Results

We have narrowed down the top choices for this fall’s Shakespeare Festival plays. It looks like The Play That Goes Wrong is the top choice; Romeo & Juliet and A Mid-Summer Nights’ Dream are tied for second place. We are considering taking two trips to the festival this year and see a couple different plays. It all depends on how quickly we can fill the bus(es); that is the best indicator for us to determine the popularity of the event. Watch for these tickets to go on sale during the late summer, and we hope to full up the bus quickly enough that we can schedule a second bus for another play.

Pegs & Jokers - Hooked!

Hooked on a game that you can’t put down? That’s what can happen with a game that is a part of our SunRiver Community and it’s called Pegs and Jokers. It seems innocent and easy enough, but when you start to play, all the elements of luck, strategy, and concentration come to light.

It begins with five cards being dealt to all four players. Those five cards bring your brain cells alive! You instantly try to play both offense and defense - how to protect and advance your pegs, how to help your partner, and how to stop your opponents. As the game progresses, you are constantly aware of how your opponent on your right is attacking your pegs and conversely observing and thinking how to confound the opponent on your left. This may sound a little complicated, but you will find it quite simple and stimulating.

The boards aren’t cheap. They are about $100 on Amazon; however, through the creativity and volunteered time of the founders of the club, the boards and pegs were made in the SunRiver Community Woodshop.

It’s an experience that is fun socially and mentally and is open to all community members. Come and see what is happening on Thursday nights from 6-8pm at the SunRiver Community Center.

Give my name ‘Reg’ at the door and you might be able to get in… ha-ha! Don’t miss out – we will see you across the board! Reg Nozawa, Vice President of the SunRiver St George Pegs & Jokers Club

Mr. Foodie:

SW Utah Restaurant Reviews

“All the news that’s fit to eat”

As the old adage goes, “A food reviewer’s work is never done”. Recently, I read some great on-line reviews of a Philly cheesesteak restaurant in Dixie Bowl & Billiards, of all places. Being a lover of all-things cheesesteak, I immediately journeyed over there, only to find that it had vacated that spot months ago. Undaunted, I then drove to its’ new address,185 Bluff St., which turned out to be a vacant lot next to Kneaders. There, in the pouring rain, sat Chuck’s Phat Philly’s Food Truck.

While their online site listed hours of 11-9, it was empty, so, still hungry and somewhat discouraged, I returned home. Days later, after calling Chuck and verifying that he was actually there, I once again safaried down Bluff on my hunt for “The Elusive Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich”. Proving that the third time was indeed a charm, the food truck was there and looked open for business.

Chuck, a friendly guy, who owns and runs the operation, apologized several times for the confusion about the hours and location. I ordered my cheesesteak the normal way, “wit” (with onions) and “wit wiz” (with cheese wiz). However, CHUCK HAD NO WIZ!!! He confided to me that since the locals weren’t ordering it, he just stopped carrying wiz! My heart sank… I was now already pretty certain that, despite the many glowing online reviews, this was not going to be the beloved Philly cheesesteak that I knew and loved. Dang! Oh well, when in Utah, I guess.

BENJA’S THAI (SG, 2 locations): Pretty standard Thai menu, but very well-made and tasty. Tom Kha Kai soup and khau soi special are standouts. Curries great as well.

Chuck then offered me his “special sauce” to spread on the sandwich. “Sure, why not”, I figured, especially since it wasn’t going to be authentic anyway. Feeling adventurous, I actually chose the Balboa, a cheesesteak sandwich on lightly toasted garlic bread, with pepper jack cheese. Next, I ordered some fries, which he dips in honey and dusts in Cajun spices. My empty stomach growling in anticipation, I sat alone in the car and awaited my somewhat unusual, but tasty sounding order.

SAKURA (SG): High-quality sushi combined with Japanese steakhouse. Try the special combo rolls Kids love steakhousechef show. New building and lobby big upgrade over prior digs (check out gorgeous new exterior doors and “aquarium floor”) New location hard to find without GPS and parking inconvenient

Q: So, was it worth all the hassle, Mr. Foodie? A: Well, the meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. The recommended sauce was a perfect blend of sweet and savory, with a touch of heat, and it went great on the chopped beef, onions, spicy cheese and garlic toast. The French fries were perfectly cooked, while the Cajun spices and honey added a delicious counterpoint to the tasty, crispy spuds.

Chuck’s Phat Phillies is now open on Tu-Thurs 11-3 and Fr-Sat 11-3 and 5-8, but these may change. Call them at 435-261-7805.

1861 (Washington): Undiscovered gem! Yummy small plates of interesting, but very accessible food. Reasonably priced, healthful and delicious. Lovely décor. Located on grounds of Ovation Retirement Community, but NOT “old people food”! Black bass always delicious. Only open for dinner, Thu-Sat. Try it!

Verdict: Utah-Philly cheesesteak food truck, with delicious, if inauthentic, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, is worth your dough.

BEST OF THE REST:

Casa Tequilana (Leeds) (Mexican), Rusty Crab Daddy (SG) (seafood boils), Chef Alfredo (SG) (Italian), Aragosta (SG)(European), Cliffside (SG) (modern American) (great views!)

NEW FOR YOU: Mary’s Cheesecakes, 1664 S Dixie Dr., has recently opened, expanding from a homebased business. Growing up with 3 delis within 10 minutes of my home, I know really good, dense, deli cheesecakes and this is quite close to the real deal. Many flavors and toppings, sold by the cake/slice/minis.

Verdict: Put on your oversized sweatpants and head on down!

Agree? Disagree? Found a place that I should try?

Cyclops!

The wonderful thing about the game of tennis is you can play it at any age! Many of us started young, some played competitively in high school and/or college, and others learned because they wanted to play with a significant other or to change from another sport.

Most of us strive to improve at the activities we enjoy. For tennis, working out in the gym may be helpful with the proper focus. A favorite of mine is performing particular running drills on the court to simulate movements we make on the court. Practicing with friends or playing sets is indeed helpful. John McEnroe used to say he played so many doubles games in his younger days, along with singles, because he, “hated practicing.” Of course, there’s the ever-famous - trekking out a ‘bucket of balls’ to the courts to practice serving, as well as just dropping the ball and hitting forehands and backhands.

But there is one method that really sets the bar for improving one’s tennis game… Cyclops. What, or who, is that, you say? It is what we refer to as the Ball Machine. Back in college, when I coached, one player was assigned to the court where they spent 10 minutes straight in a rally with ‘Cyclops’. Among many things, it pushed the player to get their footwork just right, to set their backswing soon enough, and to properly return to a neutral position following their shot each time, and the 10 minutes of this solid reinforcement definitely improved their play.

We have our own SunRiver Cyclops. As we primarily play doubles, there’s really no need to turn on the oscillation function. What I do is literally place Cyclops just beyond the baseline, on either the deuce side or ad side, then aim it crosscourt, as if it was my opponent hitting it back to me. From that position alone, you can practice crosscourt returns, the occasional down-the-line, as well as the meanie lob. You can also come to the net and practice volleys. Long story, made a little less long, is our SunRiver Cyclops is an excellent personal clinic to better your tennis game. Also, I’m available (almost) anytime to help set it up, show you how to use it, and give you suggestions on how to improve. Just don’t start calling it “Cyclops.” It may get offended and start ‘oscillating’ on you.

Sincerely,

TThe 2022 income tax season is rapidly approaching. Tax season is always a stressful time, but there is a way to take some of the stress away.

Last tax season, Rich Glass prepared over 400 returns for taxpayers in Washington County. Many of those folks were right here at SunRiver. If he did not do your taxes last year, then you probably know someone for whom he did prepare them.

The great thing about Rich’s service is that there is no charge. This is not one of those, “If it seems too good to be true, then there must be a catch.” Turns out, on this one, there is no catch. Rich will prepare your return, have it reviewed by a licensed CPA (his supervisor), and E-file the return, and he will never ask for any reimbursement other than a smile when he’s done.

Rich has worked as a volunteer for 14 years with the IRS-sponsored program VITA. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is funded and managed by the IRS (see… you knew it wasn’t free… just no charge from me).

What I will do…

- Federal and any state return

- Have the return reviewed by a licensed CPA

- E-file the return after you approve it

- Standard or itemized deductions (standard deduction for most couples is $28,700)

What I cannot do…

- I cannot do a return with rental property

- I cannot do a return with a small business with a loss

What I need

- Any tax documents: W2, W2G, 1099R, 1099SSA, 1099INT, 1099DIV, K1, Brokerage Statements

- I will need to see your Social Security Card and picture ID (unless I have done your taxes in the past)

- A big smile when I’m done

When do I start and how do you get in touch with me?

- I am currently accepting tax returns

- Email richglass@sunrivertoday.com or call (435) 256-6128 with any questions

Remember… friends don’t let friends buy TURBOTAX!

Are you searching for the ‘pot at the end of the rainbow?’ Like many, we all look for adventures, hoping to find new things to amuse us, and being part of this beautiful SunRiver Community has many of those offerings for us.

As Queen of the SunRiver Red Hatters, I would like to personally invite you to check into our group of fun-loving, chit-chatty, silly “Hatters” roaming around. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, in the Ballroom from 9-10am, for a crazy gathering of our chapters. We like to see what each is up to, and what plans are in the works for their monthly excursions. Let me tell you, they sure come up with some fun and interesting outings that inspire and entice that bond of ‘sisterhood and friendship’. Then knit them together with our motto of love, play, giggles, and fun like no other.

Come join us. We have coffee and tea for a quarter per cup, plus an added perk of shopping for just that perfect item that represents our famous colors of red and purple. You can’t miss us with our noticeable outfits of red and purple galore.

Speaking of tea, we will be hosting a ‘Birthday Celebration Tea’ this year as the Red Hat Society and SunRiver Red Hatters celebrate their annual birthdays in April. It will be a special one! So, keep an eye out for future media to spark your curiosity, and join in the celebration on Thursday, April 20th. RUBY loves to celebrate and would be honored to have you join her and her SunRiver Red Hatters in sipping those cups of tea. Save the date won’t you!

Dancin to the Oldies Dance Your Way to Better Brain Health

We have all heard how dancing is a great way to get exercise while having fun. Research has shown how dancing not only keeps your body physically fit, increases flexibility and balance, improves your mood, and provides valuable socialization, but also increases neural connections, improving brain health. There is growing evidence that stimulating one’s mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

From remembering your dance steps to making split-second decisions in a rapidly changing environment, dancing is the perfect way to sharpen your mind. Dancing can require planning and quick thinking. When partners are dancing around the floor, they must both be aware of the movement of the other dancers and plan their navigation.

In addition to recalling how to carry out a step, the person leading must plan how they are going to transition into it, communicate with their partner, and execute the step. The person following is not being passively led around but instead must be actively attuned to the here-and-now and prepared to respond to their partner’s cues. Both leading and following require active attention to all possibilities and split-second, rapid-fire decision-making.

Partner dancing can help you think faster, process information better, remember things faster and better, go with the flow better, react to things better, and get less stressed when things change. Dancing does take work, but there are so many health and mental benefits, and it is a great way to have fun while you are improving your physical and mental health.

See you at our next Dancin’ to the Oldies on Tuesday, March 28th, at 6:30pm. We will be in the Ballroom on the fourth Tuesday of every month through October.

Preparedness Committee

Disaster (earthquake) Preparedness

Where do mountains come from? Typically, they are the result of tectonic plate movement or volcanoes. Another name for earth movement of is, of course, earthquakes. Utah has the Rocky Mountains that provide a lot of evidence of past earth movement. For this reason, on the third Thursday of every April, the state of Utah has an earthquake drill called the Great Shakeout.

This year, the Great Shakeout is on April 20th at 10am. SunRiver, in conjunction with CERT, practices an earthquake drill on this day. Everyone is asked to place their red and green tags either in the window or hung on the door, so it is visible from the street. At 10am, CERT members and neighborhood block leaders go through the community and count tags. Last year, we had about a forty percent participation. We would like to do much better this year.

We still have some neighborhoods who do not have a block leader. If you would be interested in doing that, please contact Rick Bublik (435) 632-0671 or Joe Bryner (435) 215-1978, they are in the community directory. We always need help. If you are interested in becoming a CERT member, they can help you with that also. Be safe everyone.

Theatre Club

Skits ‘n’ Stuff Party

Shakespeare tells us, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

The Theatre Club has great fun creating experiences for both the players and the audience to share. We could have even more fun if new ‘players’ – like yourself - could come to our exciting party! Add this to your calendar!

We invite you and your friends to join us for a night of ‘Skits ‘n’ Stuff’ Party in the Ballroom on Monday, March 13th, starting at 5pm. You can choose to be a ‘player’ in simple performance skits! Club members will provide everything you need and ‘direct’ your rehearsal. Everyone will take turns, both as an audience member and as a performer working to earn the joyous sound of applause!

If you’re a little shy, don’t shy away from this event! The Theatre Club always needs support behind the scenes and will talk about areas that may interest you for our upcoming shows. You’ll be able to enjoy light refreshments and play the important role of an audience member.

“To be, or not to be, that is the question!” - Will you attend our night of ‘Skits ‘n’ Stuff’? This is going to be a fun evening out, an opportunity to meet your neighbors and others with similar interests. Be there, or be square!

Swim Club

The SunRiver Swim Club held their Annual Meeting and Potluck. We are proud to announce our new Swim Club Officers: President, Tom Petersen; Vice President, Lynn Anderson; Treasurer, Terri Morgan; and Secretary, Pat Ault. You may give your $5 per calendar year dues to any of our Swim Club Officers.

Well, at this time, we have a very large hole in the ground where our Outdoor Pool was located before demolition. Because of this, our Board of Trustees have put together an update of the newly proposed Outdoor Pool. You may view the update on SunRiverStGeorge.com > Association > Pool Project. Our new Outdoor Pool will be bigger and better than our last one. Have no worries!! We just need to wait for it to be built. At our age, patience is not one of our better traits. We want it, and we want it now… At least, we have a great Indoor Pool to use this coming spring and summer.

You may want to check out the outdoor pools around town. There is a pool at the Summit Athletic Club. With the right medical supplement, the cost is less than $11 per month. There is an indoor pool off Sunset Boulevard called Sand Hollow. The same applies, you may swim for free there if you have the right medical supplement. Then there is the Bloomington Country Club which has an outdoor pool for a sixmonth membership fee. Of course, none of those options are ‘kid-free’ pools.

We will be missing our Outdoor Pool but keep good thoughts that our next Outdoor Pool will be worth waiting for. The Swim Club will be hosting some events at the Pool Patio. Look for details on the SRSG Website, under the Swim Club Page.

Our SunRiver Library has been busier than ever with the colder weather. Residents are staying indoors, curling up to read a good book, drinking hot tea, and eating some of Chef Ryan’s delicious treats. Sounds good!

We appreciate all resident donations. Please remember we accept only books in good condition. We accept books on CDs, current magazines, non-fiction, biographies, large print, and fiction books in either paperback or hardcover. We now have book sections titled ‘Health & Safety’ and ‘Resident Authored’.

We have recently acquired two media cabinets which hold our books on CDs and DVDs (which is a new addition to our Library). If you have never visited our SunRiver Library, please take some time to come to the Community Center to check it out. There are two computers any resident may use, and there is a large counter where you may sit and plug in your own personal device such as a computer or tablet.

Our SunRiver Library serves residents in many ways. We also continue to mail used books to our military service personnel. If you are interested in donating to help defray mailing costs, please contact Pat Ault at (435) 817-0644 or Lolita Hagio at (435) 652-3012.

This is a new mall that we have not been to yet, and we are excited to explore new, fun shops. This mall is indoors, and everything is accessible without going outside. Lunch is on your own, so leave some room on that credit card for some delicious food at one of the many restaurants.

Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner and Dance Party

When you think about St. Patrick’s Day, what do you think about? Corned beef, cabbage, beer, green? These have all become traditions around the world. The cultural festival that we celebrate today did not start until the potato famine of 1845 when almost one million Irish immigrants made their way to the United States. Although beef was rarely eaten in Ireland, corned beef became a staple for the Irish Americans due to it being cheap and easily accessible from neighboring Jewish butchers. Boiled cabbage and potatoes were also cheap and slowly became associated with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Traditionally, during St. Patrick’s Day, pubs in Ireland were closed and most people went to church. When the holiday made its way to the States, probably due to clever marketing and because it originated in Ireland, Guinness Stout became the drink of choice during the festivities.

Green was originally not associated with St. Patrick’s Day. It was actually blue, due to the early Irish flag being predominately blue. Green was adopted during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 due to the high contrast opposed to the red uniforms of the British soldiers whom they were fighting.

Whether you celebrate the holiday for the religious aspect or the cultural aspect, we are proud to be hosting our very own St Patrick’s Day Dinner and Dance event! Please join us on Friday, March 17th, from 5-9pm in the Ballroom for a Chef Ryan prepared dinner of Corned Beef, Cabbage, Potatoes, Rye Bread, and Irish Bread Pudding with a Whiskey Sauce. Then stick around for a night of dancing as we are joined by a community favorite, DJ Lex, who will be playing a fantastic playlist of great dance tunes! Don’t forget to wear green!

Dinner and dancing tickets for this event are $20; the ticket deadline for dinner and dancing is Friday, March 10th. Dancing only tickets are $12; the ticket deadline for dancing only is Thursday, March 16th

Storytelling & Then Some...

One Wish

In Ireland in the 1840s, everyone lived on potatoes. It was the only crop. There was a family that was very poor. Families throughout the country had seen sorrow and poverty.

A young farmer’s family was no exception. His mother had been blind for many years. He and his wife had been married for many years and still remained childless. They longed to have a child yet keeping his family fed was the most important thing. Year after year he grew a substantial crop of potatoes. But one year, all the potatoes in Ireland were lost due to a blight. Now being a farmer, he had no weapon to go hunting with. All he had was a hatchet, which he took with him into the woods in search of some wildlife that could be brought back to his home for food. While in the woods, he saw only a rabbit and a few squirrels. Then, late in the day, he encountered a white stag which he prepared to kill with his hatchet so his family could have a few meals. The stag spoke in its defense, pleading that he would grant the young man one wish if he would spare him. He told the man to go home and think about a wish that would be better than just having a few meals for having killed a stag. When the young man told his father about the stag’s offer to grant one wish if the boy spared his life, the father advised his son to ask for a pot of gold that would save the whole family from poverty. When the man told his mother about the wish, she implored him to wish for her sight to be restored. When he told his wife who had longed without hope for a child, she begged him to wish for a child.

What a dilemma the man faced as he tossed and turned in his sleep the night before going back into the woods to meet with the stag and pose his wish. This is what he asked for, “I want my mother to see my wife’s baby rocking in a solid gold cradle.” His wish was granted and his whole family lived happily ever after.
